Autobiographical movies rarely get more truthfully moving than Antwone Fisher. The title is also the name of this fine drama's first-time screenwriter, a former Navy seaman who was working as a film-studio security guard when his life-inspired script was developed as Denzel Washington's directorial debut. This Hollywood dream gets better: unbeknownst to the filmmakers, Derek Luke--a newcomer who won the title role over a throng of famous contenders--was also a friend of Fisher's, and the whole film seems blessed by this fortunate coincidence. Washington's sharp instincts as an actor serve him well, as both a subtle-handed director and Luke's costar playing Jerome Davenport, a Navy psychologist assigned to assess Fisher's chronic violent temper. Their therapy sessions prove mutually beneficial, as this touching true story addresses painful memories, broken desires, and heartfelt reunions without resorting to a contrived happy ending. Derek Luke is so brilliant in his breakout role as troubled Navy-man Antwone Fisher that I'm stunned, utterly stunned at his Oscar omission. Then again, it was a strong year for leading actors and the veterans really clogged up the race, but still, you can't watch this film without embracing his screen presence and acting bravado. He embellishes every scene with the right amount of truth, sincerity and emotion and commands his scenes, stealing thunder from co-star and first time director Denzel Washington who is known for his ability to steal scenes as it were. Here though, Denzel his own acted by his young co-star and that, my friends, is a blessing to watch.

Written by the real life Antwone Fisher, this biopic tells the struggles Antwone had within the Navy. A man prone to violence and anger he's finally sent to see Jerome Davenport, a Navy psychologist played by Washington. At first Antwone is reluctant to entertain the idea of seeing a shrink but he soon begins to warm to the idea, and its here that his character starts to unravel and his life begins to make sense. The therapy sessions are done tastefully and prove engaging and informative. As some have mentioned, they do come across Hollywoodized if you so chose to label, but they are still heartwarming and sincere.

The power this movie has is as strong as its title character, and as Luke manages to unravel his character before our very eyes we are brought into his life and into his very plight. As past abuse comes to the surface, physical, mental and sexual, we begin to understand his bursts of anger, his flurries of discontent and his utter lack of trust. The events surrounding his childhood, from abandonment to betrayal, as well as those surrounding his early adulthood, like the death of a close friend, all help mold the man sitting before Davenport, but with a sound mind and patience he is able to help Fisher become a stronger and overall better man for it.

Washington makes a great first impression in the director's seat, delicately handling the material, and while some scenes may be hard to witness and the events themselves are enough to bring forth tears, Washington elegantly maneuvers our thoughts to the positive amidst the negative. Our tear ducts will be set on overdrive, but they will be happy tears cried for the boy who finally becomes the man and is welcomed back home, to the real home he's only seen in his dreams. In fact, I'm tempted to say that I prefer Washington behind the camera as apposed to in front of it, but then again he's always been give or take for me.

Alongside Washington there is another supporting performance that shines, and that is of young Joy Bryant who plays Antwone's love interest. Now while her role in the film is not the longest she has one of the most powerful, that of the supportive woman who truly teaches Antwone how to love again, how to trust and how to put others before himself. It's another great breakthrough performance that only adds more reasons to see this film.

Fisher's life was hard to get through but in the end he found something that all of us are looking for, contentment and loyalty not with others but with himself. He made such emotional growth in his lifetime and while he was only stunted by the ones closest to him, he was able to rise above the pain and the suffering to reveal the real person of the heart, the man that he always knew he needed to be. Thanks in large part to Derek Luke's commanding performance Antwone Fisher becomes more than just a character but he becomes a real person to the audience, a friend, a relative, a loved one and so when we watch him finally embrace his dreams our cheeks are red and soar and wet with this tears of admiration.

My oldest boy Bobby bought me thjis movie. we call him Bubby but he's a nice boy anyway.I wanted this dvd for ages and was very glad to get it, its all about this boy Antowne Fisher. He's in the military andyou can tell right away that this poor boy has been thru a lotta stuff. Poor kid. he starts working with that dreamy Denzel and i think id go see a doctor if it was Denzel to! Denzel really helps this boy Antwone and the ending is all sad but gave me a hopeful kinda feeling to.This movie is GOOD y'all! if you watch it your gonna cry and cray!

The irresistible pairing of Jack Nicholson and Adam Sandler is the best reason to see Anger Management, a comedy that might loosely be called The Funny and the Furious. Nicholson and especially Sandler have screen personas that partially rely on pent-up anxieties, so there's definite potential in teaming them as a mild-mannered designer of pet clothing for chubby cats (Sandler) who's been ordered to undergo anger-management therapy with a zany counselor (Nicholson) prone to occasional tantrums and devious manipulation. Surely this meandering comedy looked better on the page; director Peter Segal scores a few lucky scenes (particularly Sandler's encounter with a Buddhist monk, played by John C. Reilly), but a flood of cameos (Heather Graham, Woody Harrelson, Rudolph Giuliani, and others) can't match the number of laughs that fall flat. This movie is a great flick if you can ignore its nonsensical nature. It is done in the Adam Sander style, one where Jack Nicholson oddly fits right in for the fun. David Buzznick (Sandler) is on a plane going to a business meeting when a stewardess makes a hub bub about David's attitude. He finally losses his cool and is sentenced to anger management where Buddy Ridel (Nicholson) turns David's life upside down.

Anger Management is a funny movie about a subject that might be a serious issue for some of us. Who never felt the blood coming to the head when something goes wrong or somebody gets us disappointed? Of course I didn't expect a serious approach when a movie is starred by Adam Sandler, and judging by the DVD cover, I could only expect to have some good laughs. Honestly, I laughed a lot.

It jokes with situations that might be familiar to some of us and in the end teaches us that nothing is so bad that can't be overcomed. If a good movie is one on which we recognize ourselves watching it, even in the most ridiculous and lame situations, then for me this is a stupendous one! Go get yours!

Movie Mismanagement.......2007-05-01

It's axiomatic in theatre and film that when a secondary character starts to emerge and overshadow the leads, the project is in trouble. In Anger Management we see this problem elevated to unprecedented extremes. It's true that secondary characters like Chuck, John Turturro, and Lou, Luis Guzman deliver some of the best acting and most cheerful moments in the picture, eclipsing the rampant stupidity of Sandler and Nicholson. But this film actually carries the phenomenon one step beyond.

From start to finish, non-actors known for their names, and tempers, walk through this film with all the conviction of octogenarians being wheeled through a nursing home. They are not even given anything to do, they are used symbolically. The apotheosis of this is John McEnroe. McEnroe drew attention to himself a while back through behavior so abominable it dragged the sport of tennis down to hitherto unplumbed depths. A despicable brat, he was only allowed to stick around because he filled seats. In Anger Management he doesn't even have a line, he's a knowing wink at the audience.

The same can be said of Bobby Knight and Roger Clemens. Rudolph Giuliani makes an appearance. Woody Harrelson is funny as Galaxia not because he's funny as Galaxia, but because the casting itself is amusing. The highlight of the film occurs when Nicholson appears to be giving himself a Frankenstein treatment with a device emitting jolts of blue electricity intended to stimulate his scalp. Nicholson is comfortable as a demented, irascible coot - what a stretch for him! Sandler is, as always, a lost man/child with a head and face less interesting than a boiled egg. Marisa Tomei, a good actress, appears to be somewhat anesthetized as she smiles through the insipid love story allegedly driving this catastrophe.

That Sandler continues to find employment renews my faith in America, a land that welcomes the tired, the stupid, the talentless, those who unapologetically aim low, with open arms. If your movie can be stolen out from under you by a washed up tennis bad boy without lines, you're not just bad, you're awful.

Liked the better the 2nd and 3rd time I watched it........2007-02-11

I have to admit that my expectations were high for this movie and I was initially disappointed. The plot was unrealistic and the ending far-fetched. Since I had bought it, I watched it again and found that it was one of those movies that needs to be watched more than once because the enertainment is in the one liners and very funny scenes. Watch it again. It is hilarious. -gooosfraba

One can always count on Steven Seagal to act as the repository of yesterday's action-film clichés, and Exit Wounds is yet another case in point. Seagal plays Detroit cop Orin Boyd, a lone wolf lawman who gets in the middle of his precinct's losing battle against police corruption. Taking on a powerful but crooked cop named Montini (David Vadim)--who is busy making deals with a rich gangster (DMX)--Boyd soon sends fists and feet flying while Tom Arnold provides the comic relief. Director Andrzej Bartkowiak surely had less fun guiding Seagal through slow-motion fight sequences than he did Jet Li in Romeo Must Die, but as compensation he gets to work with the mesmerizing DMX, who looks as though he has leading-man possibilities. Unusually effective frequency, intensity and quality of action scenes.......2007-06-17

EXIT WOUNDS (2001) does justice to Steve Seagal's reputation for
outdoing all others motion pictures for the frequency, intensity and
quality of action scenes, gun firefights, and man-to-man combats.

With a plot that's somewhat difficult to follow or believe (such that
some in the audience may reach for a Bufferin), the story deals with
an inside job, being coordinated and masterminded at the highest
level in the US police force, such that in the end, it is entirely
logical, explicable, and comprehensible for why so many police
officers were recruited for, and participated in a narco-trafficking
operation without being caught, by Internal Affairs or by clean cops.

In addition, Seagal's characters learns the lesson that high level
officials in an organization can take out their rivals (lower in the
hierarchy) by taking on alone the roles of judge, jury and
executioner, all-in-one.

Playing an iconoclast, independent-minded police detective, who is
able to think things over for himself, pulled from a vast experience
on the force, and talent, with the ends for him always justify the
means, (in terms of stopping a suspect, and protecting civilians) ,
this gets Seagal in trouble, for not being a low-profile officer.

Clearly, the non-stop action scenes will send thrills down the
audience's spine, their jaws and eyes wide-open, as all types of
vehicles (cars, motorcycles) and arms are used (shotgun, pistol, Uzi,
swords) including karate body to body defense and attack moves, etc.

The soundtrack is a mixed bag, but obviously, having been prepared by
DMX, with the cast split 50/50 with African Americans, evidently, hip
hop and the latest style of rap music was employed.

The sound effects for those with a 5.1 home theater will clearly meet
and exceed expectations. The wide-screen is well done, and a plus.

There's a number of quirky short catch-phrases, most often uttered by
Anthony Anderson's character, such as when he admits fearing Seagal
"will stick a plunger up his a#$" or "you need the meat, to feel the
heat" praising obese women.

Showing plenty of fitness and gym scenes, (weight lifting, boxing,
athletics), and a $300,000 Ferrari and phenomenal stunts and
firefights almost every 10 mins, the movie clearly aims to have to
audience's adrenalin and testosterone pumping, and manages this well.

The non-sequitur of the last 5 mins, with Tom Arnold doing comedy,
and the short shelf life of the rap numbers are the weak points.

Over weight and over the hill, Steven Seagal had certainly seen better days before EXIT WOUNDS. The film starts out with an interesting premise which it unfortunately does not pursue. The best scene in this entire movie is the anger management sequence where he destroys the desk. Wouldn't we all want to do that at some time?

When renegade Detroit detective Orin Boyd (Seagal) takes on the whole Michigan militant group to save the man's life, in true action hero fashion, he is punished for his lack of respect for authority and procedure and sent to one of the toughest precincts in the city of Detroit, the 15th...

Once there, Seagal begins his usual habit of investigating things he's not assigned to, and quickly begins to suspect police corruption involving a major heroin operation...

Seagal plays a super tough cop who stays in trouble for complaints filed against him for excessive force...

He lands in a bad dangerous precinct and before you know it finds himself in nonstop furious action, trying to clean up the streets while taking on drug dealers and dirty cops pretty much all by himself...

Seagal is accompanied in this film by rapper DMX and a few other familiar faces including Anthony Anderson who is absolutely hilarious...

Better than average by the numbers Action Flick.......2006-05-30

This is one of the better Seagal Action movies and features a convincing DMX who shows he has some movie star charisma and acting chops. It's not UNDER SEIGE but it's far better than GLIMMER MAN, ON DEADLY GROUND and FIRE DOWN BELOW. It's also better than all of Seagal's direct to video fare. You also don't have to worry about him singing any Country-Western or blues songs in this one.

Seagal does not really act, but he does have an interesting charisma. At his best he's a poor-man's Clint Eastwood, who's spare Akido influenced martial arts moves are bone break-ingly no nonsense, macho stuff. He frowns a lot, he grimaces once in a while, he's sometimes photographed at unflattering angles, has vampire like teeth, runs like a girl and he almost never raises his voice and stays very very-- sometimes zombie-like, calm.

At times, Seagal's acting is so minimal you want to laugh at the irony that you actually wanted to spend your money to watch this guy. I mean I still can't decide if I think Seagal is a first class jerk with little talent (rumors of his big ego persist) or if he's kind of cool. It's remarkable he's gotten away with what he does in more than a dozen big screen movies and at least that many direct to video mistakes.

Seagal you'll notice almost right away in this movie still has that walk of his. Movie stars like John Wayne, Gary Cooper, Robert Mitcum, Humphrey Bogart, and James Cagney, to name just a few used to have interesting walks. Walks which were full of attitude and set them apart from regular people. Seagal has a special way of walking... strutting actually. It's a modified Pimp's walk. Oh not the herky jerky kind of Huggy Bear (of Starsky and Hutch fame) walk, but more the Fred Williamson or Ron -Superfly- O'neal type of strut. When you add Seagal's greased back hair (he got rid of his pony-tail a few years ago) perpetual frown, wrinkled forehead and slanted eyebrows, with the strut, he drips with the I'm a pis-ssed-off-bad-a-s-s-vibe that action movie hero's since Eastwood and Bronson are supposed to exude. Seagal's got the attitude, and he's shed most of that beer belly gut he had during the last few films he walked through (on video about three years ago, on screen it's been four years). He may be 50 years old but he's quite willing and able to do some impressive looking martial arts moves and play cops and robbers quite well.

The film also stars Issiah Washington-- a real actor. Why he isn't working in better movies I have no idea. Issiah isn't actually asked to do much acting, but you can tell if the script asked him to do any, he would have been able to pull it off.

DMX (aka Earl Simmons) is another reason people were initially curious about this film. Perhaps the biggest reason. And he has some presence in the film. I'm not sure how good of an actor he actually is since he's playing a pretty cliché'd kind of character through most of the film. He acts tough, does some physical stunts (or seems to be doing them) very well and when he's supposed to have some warmth and the audience is supposed to like him--we do. He doesn't embarrass himself and has some on-screen charisma that's not the same as other rap stars turned movie stars. He contributes a few songs to the soundtrack as well--including an interesting version of the Bill Wither's hit Ain't No Sunshine.

Maybe the worst news about this movie is that we have not one... but two characters who are in the movie mostly to provide comic relief. They are written into the movie in a very forced manner and the actors that have been cast don't do themselves any favor by trying much too hard to be funny with the material they are given. Anthony Edwards and Tom Arnold try way to hard to be funny. They usually annoy. You might enjoy their end credit comic riffing however.

So what's THE STORY? The story updates ,merges and dumbs down Dirty Harry and Serpico.

During the first sequence some bad guys impersonate cops to try and kidnap a politican. Seagal as Orin Boyd, a decorated but Lone Wolf kind of hero-cop, is the only officer who notices that the impersonating cops are breaking regulation by wearing earrings. Hundreds of cops around and only our hero sees the irregularity and suspects something funny might be going. Some sort of gadget passes hands and Orin is the only guy who pays this any attention.

Cue the action complete with some bloodshed and a climax involving the fiery explosion of a helicopter.

In the process of saving the politician's life Orin has embarrassed the politician and caused lots of damage, endangered lots of lives and broke lots of rules. He's a decorated hero cop so he's transferred to the worst ghetto precinct you could imagine where a lot of misfit neanderthal cops work.

Oh that old chestnut huh? Yep.

What you couldn't imagine is that this precinct is run by a woman whom everyone pretends doesn't look like a cover-girl model. She's tough though and sends Orin to anger management classes and eventually demotes him to traffic cop. It's at the anger management school that Orin meets up with the t.v. talk show host played by Tom Arnold.

However Orin has quickly had a run-in with the local drug king pin, Latrell Walker (played by DMX), and his over-weight comical assistant and combo dance/strip club owner, T.K. (played by Anthony Anderson). When he tries to be the lone -wolf hero and take Latrell down he winds up screwing up another cops undercover operation. This is what gets him demoted temporarily to a traffic cop.

Oh but something isn't quite right with the picture and Orin discovers that dirty cops are involved and not all the players are who, they at first, seemed to be. I know this will come as a huge shock to action movie fans (NOT).

This leads to Orin getting involved in several scrapes that lead to a fairly big shoot-out/ action scene to wrap things up.

All of this takes supposedly takes place in Detroit. If you haven't been to Detroit you probably won't notice that Toronto is where the movie has been shot.

There's no romance in the film and outside of some naked club dancers and the brief hint of a flirtation, none of the stars have any on-screen relationships with women. In fact we have no idea about Seagal's private life in the film at all. You want depth? Go swim in the deep end of the pool. This is a Joel Silver action movie darn it.

Exit Wounds, is just one more time-wasting action movie that too many people weren't able to resist, so it became successful at the box-office. It's slightly better than you probably think it is, but you would still be better off satisfying your macho movie 'jones' by watching some action movies from Hong Kong (directed by Johnny To, Ringo Lam, Tsui Hark or John Woo to start with), but hey, this one is in English.

IMAGE AND SOUND

Overal the 2.35:1 anamorphic wide screen transfer looks very good. The film has lots of nigh scenes and the black levels are strong and shadow details pretty good. There's some pixalation in a few scenes and if you want to be really picky you'll notice several white spot drop outs that are the result of some wear and tear on the original print used for the transfer. That's a bit disappointing that they didn't find a print in better condition or combine a couple of prints to Create one pristine one to transfer, but it's a pretty minor distraction. There doesn't seems to be too many problems with edge enhancements or bouncing video levels either.

There's only one soundtrack on the DVD and it's in 5.1 dolby. If you don't have the 5 channel system you'll be hearing a squeezed version of it which others call a down-mix. That means some of the squeezed together separation will create some muddier sound effects but usually it is not problematic and it won't affect your ability to hear dialogue.

The 5.1 track is utilized quite well. There's lots of big bangs and sound is bounced around from the various channels so there are plenty of left to right, back and forth, and right to left sound effects. When a noisy Humvee drives across the screen the sound moves through the room as well. This however isn't always the case... which is a bit puzzling. Why in the opening action sequence is the bun battle now nearly as lively as the one later in the film? The music score , occasional DMX songs and several sound effects are base heavy, so the LFE is being used throughout the film.

Extra Features:

The longest extra is the obligatory behind the scenes puff piece. There's the expected discussion about Seagal's come-back (of sorts) the casting of DMX and pre-planning for the film. Everyone is upbeat and positive and congratulating and praising everyone else of course. You do hear from Seagal, who sounds a bit tired and bored as well as producer Joel Silver who sounds enthusiastic. We get to see how a few stunts were done and see how the wire work played a big part in making Seagal look pretty good in the action scenes. Seagal as we see is a very agile athletic guy and he doesn't look 50 years old.

There is also the 9 plus minute feature called A Day on the Set with Anthony Anderson. Anderson plays T.K. in the film and he's often called upon to be the comic relief. We follow him from his hotel room, to his trailer, to the set for a scene he is shooting, and then, at the end of the day, he does a bit of a comic rant about what a long hard day it has been and how he has sacrificed so much to give those of us in the audience some entertainment value. Anderson's running commentary is only occasionally amusing and we don't see enough on the set type action for the piece to have much value.

The music video is presented in wide screen (but it is not anamorphic). Mysteriously the audio for the video is in Dolby 2.0. It should certainly have been in 5.1. The re-make, hip-hop version of the Ain't No Sunshine sounds okay in 2.0.

When I saw previews for this movie, I thought to myself man I want to go see this movie. I never did though go to the movies to see it. I finally rented it though and I wasn't disappointed one bit. The action is off the chain, the plot is pulsating, and Seagal is his typical bad ass self. There were other good performances in this movie as well. DMX is equal to Seagal in the bad ass department, Isaiah Washington shows off his versatility as the cop teamed with Seagal, and Michael Jai White is very convincing as the devil cop Louis Strutt. The best part in the movie is when Boyd (Seagal) fights Strutt while Rollins (DMX) fights Bontini. If you're a movie fan who likes over-dramatized Oscar movie dribble, then this movie isn't for you. If you like an entertaining plot with pizazz and style, then this movie is right up your alley!

hill harper is so intensely understated it gave me goosebumps. very rare a film goes along that its subject matter is so lost in the fine writing and directing and acting. originally a stage play, this was set to the big screen but it only played the film fests.

critically acclaimed, hill lost weight to look like an aids-infected prisoner estanged from his father billy dee williams. coming to terms with an emphathetic phylicia rashad reconnecting with obba and rae dawn, this movie was just what the doctor ordered.

a fine cast assembled, great directing/writing, excellent story, couln't ask for more

A story for any family dealing with forgiveness.......2005-03-18

Dealing with family and forgiveness is one of the hardest and most humbling things we all, as humans, go through in life. This story shows how this one man, who is dying and is in prison, not only tortures himself because of anger, love and forgiveness, but how his family and friends support, and at times don't support his journey. If you are looking for a story with raw emotions, hard cold truths, and saving love, this is the story for you. It applies to us all as humans as it erases the differences of race or color and deals with the heart.

The acting in this movie is superb. Hill Harper and Billy Dee Williams have outdone themselves again.

Jordan Walker-Pearlman has taken this play and has shown us all this valuable life lesson on film. I expect great things from Jordan in the future and anxiously await them. You have my support.

Bear's take on The Visit.......2005-01-31

I am a Black African from South Africa and like movies in general but I am an avid supporter of Black Amarican movies. This was a very good movie with superb acting by all. This movie for me was a fresh change from movies like Boys 'n the Hood, Best Man, Love Jones etc. Don't get me wrong, these movies hold their own in their respective genres and I love them. It's just that seeing Hill Harper giving such a powerful, convincing portrayal of inmate Alex Waters dying of AIDS made me respect him even more as an actor. In fact i regretted buying his other movie Loving Jezebel. I know the genre is different but I still think that The Visit is a better movie both in terms of material and Hill Harper's acting. Having said that, the performance by the entire cast (Rae dawn Chong, Obba Babatunde, Phylicia Rashad, Marla Gibbs and Billy Dee Williams) was excellent.
I really welcome movies like this, movies that tackle social issues experienced by real people and at the same time provide actors with serious roles with depth. Keep up the good work

Take My Eyes, a drama about a couple entangled in an abusive relationship, proves that Spanish Director Icíar Bollaín has studied the aggressor's mindset in order to portray the violent husband, Antonio (Luis Tosar) with a certain amount of sympathy. The film enlightens rather than enrages. Antonio, who beats his wife Pilar (Laia Marull), is a complex character overcome by his insecurity that Pilar will leave him. Take My Eyes opens on Pilar taking her son to live with her sister, safe from Antonio's uncontrolled anger. Antonio stalks Pilar, warning that he can't survive without her, then signs up for therapy. Conversely, Pilar is co-dependent, unable to see Antonio's cruelty because of her blind belief in the construct of marriage due to her mother's past, similar history with her deceased husband. Pilar's sister's wedding and Pilar's new job as a museum docent acquired in her effort to command independence exacerbates the couple's dilemma. Pilar returns to Antonio but a terrifying incident scares her permanently away from him. Throughout, one senses Pilar's impending danger, but the complexities of her and Antonio's arrangement, including her motherly role in their relationship, sheds light on domestic violence for those viewers who are baffled by it. Take My Eyes also explains how detrimentally far couples will go to stay together for their child. Well-acted and nicely written, Take My Eyes is a smart film about the horrors of abuse. This is a tremendously well crafted and fast moving movie about mental and physical relationship/spousal abuse. The quote in the title to this review is from one of the husbands, talking about how his constant threats of violence and violent actions effected his wife's otherwise animated personality.

In this movie, Pilar is torn between the love for her husband and the abuse she receives from him. She tries to reconcile the beauty and goodness she knows is in him with his violent actions and threats.

Abuse is used to control. While abuse may be an effective means of control, it often ends up disabling the beauty, artistry, health, and emotional capacity of the controlled person. Ironically, this can lead to a cycle where the abuser understandably finds their victim less attractive in their diminished condition.

Abusive spouses tend to limit their spouse's social contacts by limiting time with friends and family and, as in this movie, limiting even their work contacts - or removing them from the working world entirely - making them more singularly dependent. Sometimes abused spouses can be helped by reconnecting them with more people in general and by giving them the courage to fight back non-violently, calling attention to the specific abusive actions.

There's a smart scene in this movie where the abusive husband is in therapy, and he's instructed to: a) emotionally recognize when he's getting angry, b) create separation and breathing room at that point, and c) get involved in doing or thinking about pleasant other things for awhile. He's asked to tell the therapy group of a time in his past when he was not so stressed and when his world was at peace. The screenwriting is great and revealing because he (Antonio) says, "I can't remember." He is being sincere. His past has few, if any, sustained memories of peaceful, intimate or familial social environments.

Helping certain abusers is very difficult, because they grew up in abusive environments. They've never known patterns that did not involve violence as a part of regular conflict resolution patterns. Conceding this deficiency in some abusers should give everyone working with them more empathy and understanding of their challenges. Creating a world where there is both social peace and positive dispute resolution habits is especially difficult for these men & women. It involves demonstrating for them intimate and socially functioning worlds - worlds they may not think really exist - outside of fictional stories.

Some people reading the title to this movie may mistakenly think this is a macabre and grotesque tale of spousal abuse. It is not. Rather, it shows exceptionally and sympathetically the struggles and loves of different types of people involved in these types of abuses. There are scenes where, even though we despise Antonio's abuse of Pilar, we still understand her love for him. Any movie that can emotionally convey something that complex and real is worth studying carefully.

During the movie's plot, Pilar and Antonio get back together. Pilar, having tasted working and some freedom, wants to take a course on art education to become a tour guide, explaining paintings' histories and mythological roots. Antonio struggles, watching her become more outspoken and independent.

If you don't want to know how the movie ends, then don't read this paragraph. But I want people to know this is a gorgeous and smart movie. Unfortunately, the husband doesn't figure things out, and he returns to his patterns of using violence.

But this movie has a healthier ending. No, the husband doesn't eventually change his ways. Rather, Pilar finds ways to surpass the abuse, outreaches and reconnects socially, and pursues a career in the arts.

This movie doesn't have a "happy ending," but it is important to also emphasize that it is not a "male bashing" movie. I have never seen a more sympathetic portrayal of a male abuser, giving us glimpses of his flawed thought processes and fears. Ideally, I wish Antonio could have found ways to change his violent behaviors & rationales, and I wish both he and Pilar would not have lost the genuine & positive parts of their relationship . . . but that is not the story this movie tells.

Spousal Abuse: A Horrifyingly Real Story of the Consequences.......2007-03-13

TE DOY MIS OJOS (Take My Eyes) is a blisteringly real examination of spousal abuse - the etiology, the mechanisms, the concept of co-dependency, and the high rate of recidivism - all bound together in a brilliant screenplay by Alicia Luna and director Icíar Bollaín. It won many Goyas (read Oscars) in Spain and for good reason: this is a powerful film about an indelicate subject from a country (Spain) not usually comfortable discussing much less film such issues.

Pilar (Laia Marull) and her son Juan (Nicolás Fernández Luna) live in a small apartment with husband/father Antonio (Luis Tosar), a small section of hell where daily Antonio abuses Pilar with an uncontrollable anger. Pilar and Juan leave one night to live with Pilar's soon to be married sister Ana (Candela Peña) and fiance, a Scotsman John (David Mooney). Ana encourages Pilar to divorce the abusive Antonio but Pilar is frightened, fearing she has no means of support and admitting that there are parts of Antonio she still loves. Complicating Pilar's thinking is her mother Aurora (the fine Rosa Maria Sardà) who tries to underplay the problem by insisting that all marriages have their little problems! Antonio stalks Pilar, pleading for her to return, but every encounter results in a flair-up of Antonio's abusive behavior. Pilar finds a menial job at the museum in Toledo, a position she loves and soon is training to become a guide, loving speaking tot he public about art. Antonio agrees to seek help for his behavioral problems and enters group therapy and private therapy (Sergi Calleja) and begins bringing flowers and gifts and constant attention to Ana, hoping to have her return home. And return Ana does, with Juan, and with some newfound sense of self worth form her position at the museum. But as soon as Ana is 'home' a horrifying incident occurs and she gathers the strength to see the relationship clearly and respond correctly.

The cast of actors is brilliant, the pacing of the film keeps the viewer on seat's edge, the cinematography by Carles Gusi captures the magic of Toledo, Spain, the musical score by Alberto Iglesias is first rate classical writing, and the amount of information about a little understood problem is an additional reward that accompanies this superb film. The film is in Spanish with English subtitles and the DVD adds a featurette that further examines a treatment center for abusive men feels like a much needed public service ploy. This is one of those films that would be easy to ignore because of the subject matter, but that is a real reason to view it - in addition to the fact that it is such a fine work of art. A Spanish Award Winner--"Take My Eyes" Is A Thoughtful, Intelligent Portrait Of Domestic Abuse.......2006-11-08

Having never even heard of the Spanish film "Take My Eyes," I did a little research prior to watching it. I was amazed to see that it had actually won many international film prizes. It swept the Goya Awards (Spain's equivalent to the Oscar) in 2004, picking up Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Screenplay. Stateside, Luis Tosar even picked up Best Actor at the Seattle International Film Festival. Suitably impressed with this pedigree, I went into "Take My Eyes."

"Take My Eyes" is an intimate story of domestic abuse. It was particularly noteworthy in Spain where most domestic violence is unreported. It's not an "open" topic for discussion and not nearly as publicized there as it is in other countries. The story that it presents is one that American audiences are all too familiar with--and it breaks no new ground plotwise. What it does offer, however, are great performances and an earnest attempt to depict all sides of the situation.

Laia Marull is extremely potent and believable as the lead. She plays the faithful wife--and her love for her husband is just as well established as her fear. As she struggles to rebuild her life--you see her hope, optimism and happiness blossom. But you also see devastation and betrayal and finally hatred. It's an emotional tour de force. But where this film is unique and special is in the husband's character played by Luis Tosar. He is not a stock villain. He is sympathetic to a large degree as he honestly loves his wife but is unable to control his anger. Much of the film centers on his attempt to rehabilitate himself with therapy. I really appreciated this even handed approach. It was thoughtful and intelligent.

Seek this film out. It's a sensitive and astute portrait of one particular relationship. With strong performances and intelligent writing, this is a story that will stay with you. KGHarris, 11/06.

Anger management is a complex topic. The Anger Toolbox provides a wonderful foundation for learning about our personalities, as applied to our developing emotions from infancy to adulthood. This DVD provides much more "theory" about identifying and understanding anger and other emotions. It is more comprehensive than other anger management techniques, some of which simply focus on behavioral modification to "control" anger.
