James Garner substitutes for Rock Hudson in this hilarious Doris Day outing. Housewife Beverly Boyer (Day) happens by chance to give an executive of Happy Soap an honest appraisal of one of his company's products. Charmed by her forthright and honest manner, he makes Beverly the company spokesperson. When she becomes an advertising sensation, her husband (Garner) has to deal with the social ramifications of his wife making more money than he does. Day and Garner are both in good form, and Garner nicely portrays the mounting frustration of bewildered husband Gerald.

Gerald's refusal to accept that Beverly's new career infringes on her duties as housewife is, of course, outdated thinking today. Nevertheless, the film works and is sincerely funny. No wonder: comedian Carl Reiner cowrote the script. --Mark Savary

3 out of 5 stars The thrill of a housewife working on television.......2007-08-31

This is a romantic comedy about a housewife named Beverly Boyer (Doris Day), married to a successful gynecologist Gerald Boyer (James Garner), get a job offer of doing soap commercials on television. This is a typical family drama in a romantic set when the husband gets jealous that his wife makes more money than he does, and the fear that she may become too independent. The movie doesn't have any magic or unusal plot except that if you are a fan of Doris Day and James Garner, you would love to see them play married couple. This movie was directed by Norman Jewison (directed Moonstruck); written by Carl Reiner (wrote and directed Dick Van Dyke Show) and Larry Gelbart (famous for TV sitcoms MASH and Cheers). During an interview, Carl Reiner said that he had Judy Holliday in mind to play the role of Beverly Boyer. My favorite moments in the movie are; when a swimming pool installed in the Boyer's backyard for a commercial becomes a parking space when Gerald drives right into it one day after returning from work. In another situation a German nanny who can not speak English misunderstands Gerald.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing satire that should have been a masterpiece.......2007-07-22

THE THRILL OF IT ALL (1964, Universal) is an enjoyable, but disappointing TV advertising satire from director Norman Jewison, producer Ross Hunter, and writer Carl Reiner. With those talents, plus Doris Day and James Garner, the film should have been way better. But it still has enough funny moments to be recommended for one rental.

Doris plays Beverly Boyer, the Connecticut housewife of Manhattan doctor Gerald Boyer (James Garner). By accident, Beverly becomes the TV commercial spokeswoman for Happy soap, Pretty soon, everyone is watching her zany commercials and not the soap opera program itself. This frustrates Gerald, who can never find his wife at home, has a maid who does not speak English, and has a small son who keeps hanging up the phone on Daddy. But it delights the Happy soap executives, who make Beverly a star.

Also starring here are Arlene Francis (who has some wonderful last reel moments as a very pregnant woman caught in a New York traffic jam), Edward Andrews (as Francis' husband), Elliott Reid, Reginald Owen, and ZaSu Pitts. The climactic scene where Dad drives his convertible into a soapy swimming pool at night is a laugh-out-loud classic.
("Get the car out of the bottom of the pool. You can't miss it. It's the only car down there.") THE THRILL OF IT ALL is a fun, occasionally uproarious comedy satire that should have been a masterpiece with this much talent on both sides of the camera.

4 out of 5 stars I want my Happy soap..........2007-07-15

This movie is fun for the whole family. Created in 1963, this comedy is timeless and Doris Day and James Garner are, as usual, great together. Doris Day plays, Beverly Boyer, the wife of an obstetrician, Dr. Gerald Boyer (Garner). Through one of his older lady patients she gets a job as the Happy soap spokesperson. This creates havoc in their household and makes for good laughs. Garner had inadvertently drove his convertible into his newly built pool, courtesy of the soap company, so he wasn't happy. This leads up to the best scene where Garner is fed up with the hole soap job and kicks all the boxes of soap into the pool, where his car is. There were suds all over making their kids believe it was snow. trying to take the suds out was another funny scene. Full of laughs for all.
