In its second season, "The Odd Couple was filmed before a live studio audience," and a good sitcom was well on its way to becoming a great one. Jack Klugman, as sloppy Oscar, and Tony Randall as fussy Felix, two divorced men trying to live together without driving each other crazy, was casting alchemy, and as time goes by, we appreciate the fundamental things that still apply: smart, character-based writing and indelible performances. While there are no episodes that can be said to be truly classic, several are fan favorites, including "Sleepwalker," which was included as one of the bonus episodes on the first-season set, "Felix the Calypso Singer," in which Felix becomes the third wheel on Oscar's romantic getaway with his girlfriend, and "You Saved My Life," in which Felix almost kills Oscar with kindness after Oscar rescues him. This season fleshes out the mismatched friends' backstory with two fun flashback episodes. In "Speak for Yourself," Oscar is forced to step in when Felix develops laryngitis on the night he was to propose to his future ex-wife Gloria, and in "A Night to Dismember," a season benchmark, Oscar, Felix, and Oscar's ex-wife, Blanche, have different memories of the fateful night on which Oscar and Blanche split up.
Gone this season are the daffy Pigeon sisters. Introduced are Janis Hansen as Gloria, Joan Hotchkis as Oscar's girlfriend, Dr. Nancy Cunningham, and Brett Somers, a perfect match, as the dread Blanche. A pre-Laverne and Shirley Penny Marshall makes her first appearance as Oscar's secretary, Myrna, and in the episode, "Security Arms," that's John Fiedler, who portrayed Vinnie in the original 1968 Odd Couple movie (he is also the instantly recognizable voice of Piglet in the Disney Winnie the Pooh shorts). In later seasons, The Odd Couple overindulged on stunt casting (remember the Billie Jean King-Bobby Riggs episode?) This second season offers comedian David Steinberg ("The Odd Couple Meets Their Host") and opera singer Richard Fredricks ("Does Your Mother Know You're Out, Rigoletto?"). The Odd Couple was a series that got better with each season. This live incarnation of the show is the one that is most fondly remembered, making the second season one that, unlike Felix, will never wear out its welcome. --Donald Liebenson

Two divorced New Yorkers---a slob and a fussbudget---try to live together `without driving each other crazy' in this classic sitcom based on Neil Simon's hit play and movie. Both Jack Klugman and Tony Randall won Emmys in the leads, the latter in the final year of a five-season run. `Now if I only had a job,' Randall said at the Emmy gala. The show inspired two remakes, one an animated series portraying the main characters as a cat and a dog, and a 1982-83 version with a mostly black cast.

BRAVO PARAMOUNT!!! FELIX AND OSCAR ROCK!!! BRING ON SEASON 3!!!.......2007-09-12
First of all I have to say thank you Paramount for not taking too long to realize that The Odd Couple was worthy of being released on dvd from their original studio, and you did not take forever to release Season 2!!!
Needless to say these episodes were like candy and I ate up every last one in less than a week!!! My all-time favorites were Fat Farm, A night to dismember ( a very funny guest appearance by Joan Van Ark), The Greyhound Golden Earrings, and Security Arms. The chemistry was pure magic the way Oscar would play off of the insanity of Felix. Oh, and how could I forget to mention the episode Hospital Mates.
I loved this show so much that I would even sit through the opening before every episode, because it cracks me up the way the narrator would talk and see Felix's face as he's being thrown out the door, only to turn back and have his wife's hand sticking out to give him a frying pan! REQUESTING THAT HE NEVER RETURN!!! Well, I hope us diehard fans won't have to wait in vain for Season 3!!!
BUY IT!! NO EDITS!!.......2007-09-06
Based on the reviews I'm reading, I've come to two conclusions:
1 - This is an excellent collection of Odd Couple episodes, in their original, un-edited form, that any fan should own!
2 - The only mistake made was putting a mis-leading disclaimer (edits & music changes) on the box. I hope it doesn't discourage sales. This needs to be fixed by Paramount....
It's all intact -- BUY THE SET!
No Music Edits? Thank God!.......2007-09-02
I am not of the opinion that editing the music out of this series is a nitpicky concern, it would be the bull without the horns, so I am thrilled that these classic episodes remain untouched. If we all put our heads on our desks for a few moments, we'll realize that it's really outrageous for us to have expected anything else, isn't it? The way they have us trained!
This is a brilliant series, I really recommend it to people as a sort of yardstick, because if you watch these shows, and you don't "get it," with all due respect, there's something wrong with you!! DO SOMETHING, AND DO IT NOW!
Ah, it's getting late, and I must go, see, my curtain goes up on time, not like those clowns over at Lincoln Center!!
Excellent!.......2007-09-02
I just finished watching the second season and was incredibly pleased. The quality is amazing! I watched it on my 50" Plasma and couldn't believe the details I had missed back in the 70's. Felix and Oscar look a bit more wrinkled, but it adds to their character!
Do not hesitate to buy this second season - it's worth every dime!
I only worry that they'll do what so many others are doing, which is to stop offering new seasons such as, Leave it to Beaver, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Bob Newhart, etc. I was so looking forward to owning all seasons.
Tony and Jack Found their Groove in Season 2.......2007-09-01
The First season has a few gems but it was in Season 2 that The Odd Couple really took off. These episodes are absolute classics and I'm loving every minute of it. The fat farm scene has had me in stitches since the 70's. "Are you gonna eat your desert". There are so many memorable lines in these episodes. Couldn't be happier that this is finally available on DVD.

Product Description
Do you learn better by watching rather than reading? Here is a chance to see how to transport your baby from screaming into serenity...in minutes. Watch as, step-by-step, Dr. Karp teaches new parent how to switch on their baby's powerful calming reflex. English and Spanish In "The Happiest Baby" Dr. Karp reveals a treasure sought by new parents for centuries... the "calming reflex" (the automatic "off-switch? for any baby?s crying). No wonder thousands of Los Angeles parents, from working moms to superstars like Madonna and Michelle Pfeiffer have turned to Dr. Karp to learn his secrets for making babies happy. Elisabeth Bing author and co-founder of Lamaze International "The Happiest Baby on the Block is fun, fascinating and convincing. I highly recommend it to all new parents." (Running time - 38 minutes.) The DVD also contains 3 bonus chapters: 1) Dr. Karp answers 25 questions from parents about calming babies and helping them sleep. 2) A Spanish dubbed audio track of the entire 38 minute teaching video. 3) Three tracks of calming white-noise sound that is an extraordinary mix of womb sounds and a newly designed pulsation that babies love (even though it sounds a little odd to the ears of an adult) Each track can be played individually, played in sequence or repeated for hours to gently guide your baby into a deep level of relaxation. This video is designed in NTSC not PAL or SECAM. It is meant for use in most countries in the Western Hemisphere as well as Japan, South Korea, Greenland, Guam, Samoa, and the Philippines.
Customer Reviews:
A MUST HAVE!.......2007-09-07
This video will introduce you to a way to make your infant sleep! There is no magic involved, but simple techniques that work to calm your baby. Our baby has been sleeping all night through since 7 weeks, some nights she sleeps 13 hours!!
Making the first few months a little easier.......2007-09-07
We buy this as a baby shower gift for friends every time. It worked wonders. At last we had a peaceful car ride (our son would scream in the car seat anytime we went somewhere). Oh beloved static!
These techniques work if only people give them a chance. Too many parents say their kid hates to be swaddled. Well, they were more squished than that for nine months. These techniques make sense too.
I hear the book is great too but I think the DVD must be better, especially for those who don't have time to read the book. Watching Dr. Karp use these techniques with real babies is amazing. And the sounds included on the DVD are handy too.
Good way to calm your baby from 0-3 months.......2007-09-06
I found Dr. Karp's techniques beneficial in calming our baby. It is also a great way for Dad to interact with the baby. This is a quick video to watch as well, in case you don't have time to read the book.
THE HAPPIEST PARENTS ON THE BLOCK.......2007-09-04
Our son was not exactly colicky or high need during his "4th trimester" of his life however, a trusted friend recommended the dvd so highly we thought we'd watch it anyway and practice the 5 S's method to see what would happen. Well, our son went from being slightly fussy before bedtime with just a couple of wake ups throughout the night to drifting off to sleep without any drama and sleeping the whole night through from the age of 4 weeks until now at age of 10 months! We simply couldn't believe the transformation. Our family as well as other parents were shocked that our son was such a great sleeper during the night which made him very happy and rested during the day. My husband and I believe that Dr Karp's method was the key reason behind our baby's amazing new nighttime routine. We highly recommend the dvd or the book to any frustrated and sleep-deprived parents or even those parents who think that their baby doesn't need the 5 S's method. Dr Karp's method is simply a whole new level of peaceful nighttime routine for babies.
Great ideas for new parents (and veteran parents too!).......2007-09-03
This DVD has some wonderful ideas for soothing babies. The idea of the "fourth trimester" just makes so much sense for newborns; that really helped me relax my expectations for the first 3 months after my son was born. Not every technique will work for every baby, but of the 5 s's, we used at least 3 of them almost every day! We recommend this DVD to all our friends having babies!

Mel Brooks scored his first commercial hit with this raucous Western spoof starring the late Cleavon Little as the newly hired (and conspicuously black) sheriff of Rock Ridge. Sheriff Bart teams up with deputy Jim (Gene Wilder) to foil the railroad-building scheme of the nefarious Hedley Lamarr (Harvey Korman). The simple plot is just an excuse for a steady stream of gags, many of them unabashedly tasteless, that Brooks and his wacky cast pull off with side-splitting success. The humor is so juvenile and crude that you just have to surrender to it; highlights abound, from the lunkheaded Alex Karras as the ox-riding Mongo to Madeline Kahn's uproarious send-up of Marlene Dietrich as saloon songstress Lili Von Shtupp. Adding to the comedic excess is the infamous campfire scene involving a bunch of hungry cowboys, heaping servings of baked beans and, well, you get the idea. --Jeff Shannon
Description
The railroad's got to run through the town of Rock Ridge. How do you drive out the townfolk in order to steal their land? Send in the toughest gang you've got...and name a new sheriff who'll last about 24 hours. But that's not really the plot of Blazing Saddles, just the pretext. Once Mel Brooks' lunatic film many call his best gets started, logic is lost in a blizzard of gags, jokes, quips, puns, howlers, growlers and outrageous assaults upon good taste or any taste at all. Cleavon Little as the new lawman, Gene Wilder as the wacko Waco Kid, Brooks himself as a dim-witted politico and Madeline Kahn in her Marlene Dietrich send-up that earned an Academy Award nomination all give this sagebrush saga their lunatic best. And when Blazing Saddles can't contain itself at the finale, it just proves the Old West will never be the same!
Customer Reviews:
Still Funny after all these years.......2007-09-04
I think I've become Cleavon Little's number one fan. He and Gene Wilder are as funny as ever in this classic... good humor never stops making you laugh and it is especially true in this case.
Blazing Saddles.......2007-08-27
A must have for any movie buff. This is truly one of the classics!
They don't make movies like this anymore!.......2007-08-24
This movie is a comedy classic! I love how Mel Brooks makes an hysterical mockery of the Wild West. His role as an equally corrupt and incompetent governor, under the sway of Harvey Korman's Attorney General is hilarious. Also, the whole business with Rock Ridge is a side splitter, with Cleavon Little and Gene Wilder, posing as social outcasts, end up winning over the hostile locals and shutting down the corrupt designs of Korman's character (Headly "Heddy" Lamar). Many other great scenes are found throughout the movie. A must for all fans of "intelligent comedy." Unfortunately, this movie is so non-PC that it will most likely never be re-released in theaters.
I don't find this movie funny at all........2007-08-18
I don't find this movie funny at all. It's so boring thatI did not finish the DVD. I regret buying it even though it cost me only 10 dollars.
One of the funniest movies ever made.......2007-07-07
I dont know why but I cant get enough of this movie. The humour is really funny and there are so many scenes I enjoy, but none I can type down. If you enjoy comedy, then this movie is for you.

The Celestine Prophecy is an action-adventure adaptation of the hit novel by James Redfield, a film that moves so swiftly it can be difficult at times to absorb the New Age philosophy tucked into Redfield's multiple, so-called Insights. Matthew Settle plays an American history teacher who travels to Peru to look into the discovery of an ancient manuscript that foretells the arrival of a new spirituality. The Peruvian government and Catholic church, threatened by something that might supplant traditional religion and mainstream values, harass and arrest the scientists and enlightened souls who discovered the manuscript. Our hero becomes involved in a dangerous effort to keep the document from official hands; along the way, he's introduced to the prophecy's major principles, which arouse his dormant spiritual abilities. Annabeth Gish, Hector Elizondo, and Jurgen Prochnow are a welcome presence in this light and sometimes confusing, if casually engaging work that requires repeat viewings to fully hear its interesting message. --Tom Keogh

Finally.......2007-09-06
There are many who don't like to read or who don't have the time. So this Dvd is great for those who are on a spiritual path with one foot still stuck in the rat race. This dvd gives excellent examples of synchronicity, and a wonderful visual example of energy fields and how we can amplify our energy with others. It is good for parents who are introducing their children to the world of spirituality.
What if a Simple Plot and Poor Acting Are in the Same Movie?.......2007-08-28
Have you ever seen a movie with a plot so transparent that you can predict several scenes out? Do you enjoy films performed by people that make you long for the relatively high quality acting of 1980's television shows like the "A-Team"? If so, then this movie is for you.
Serioulsy, I would suggest that if you want to explore other exotic cultures and spirituality, that you save your money for a trip to South America instead of purchasing this film.
Opening the eyes.. .......2007-08-25
Though slightly skewed against a particular sect, this ideal can be applied to any group or persons willing to control others for their betterment..... eye opening... must buy for those wonderning what next......
The Celestine Prophecy.......2007-08-24
I have to say I was quite disappointed with this film. It was very, very different to the book. It was quite shallow and didn't go into any of the prophecies with any degree of depth. If you hadn't read the book you couldn't possibly understand the message. Overall, very disappointing. Some lovely scenery at times though.
There still room for hope.......2007-08-23
I like the story very much. If I hadn't read the book first might have not watched the hole movie. I felt the movie was a little vague in developing the story. It moved a little fast and would be easy to miss what was happing. I did like it. I am goimg to watch it again. The message is uplifting for a change.

Black comedies don't come much blacker than this cult favorite from 1972, and they don't come much funnier, either. It seemed that director Hal Ashby was the perfect choice to mine a mother lode of eccentricity from the original script by Colin Higgins, about the unlikely romance between a death-obsessed 19-year-old named Harold (Bud Cort) and a life-loving 79-year-old widow named Maude (Ruth Gordon). They meet at a funeral, and Maude finds something oddly appealing about Harold, urging him to "reach out" and grab life by the lapels as opposed to dwelling morbidly on mortality. Harold grows fond of the old gal--she's a lot more fun than the girls his mother desperately matches him up with--and together they make Harold & Maude one of the sweetest and most unconventional love stories ever made. Much of the earlier humor arises from Harold's outrageous suicide fantasies, played out as a kind of twisted parlor game to mortify his mother, who's grown immune to her strange son's antics. Gradually, however, the film's clever humor shifts to a brighter outlook and finally arrives at a point where Harold is truly happy to be alive. Featuring soundtrack songs by Cat Stevens, this comedy certainly won't appeal to all tastes (it was a box-office flop when first released), but if you're on its quirky wavelength, it might just strike you as one of the funniest movies you've ever seen. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
A classic.......2007-09-10
Great movie with awesome soundtrack. No violence or nudity. My teenagers loved it too. Very Quirky.
Greatest movie ever?.......2007-09-08
I've loved this movie ever since I was first introduced to it in college 15 years ago. It's filled with very funny scenes, terrific acting, and the most PERFECT movie soundtrack. Buy it! Watch it until you have every line and musical note memorized!
Independent Cinema's Forebear.......2007-08-15
What can be said about Harold and Maude? Beautiful love story of two cosmic souls brought together by death. Hilarious black comedy with a heart of gold. I could think of more cliches but I digress.
Harold is a lonely lost young man, he stages suicides for his mother's benefit in a fruitless attempt for her attention. Upon attending a funeral he meets Maude, an elderly jovial woman so full of life she radiates happiness. Their friendship blossoms and Harold leans how to live instead of just existing. It is amazing how just one person could free him from his mental prison and realize that life is worth living.
Maude is really the muse of this film. Her philosophy is so clear and truthful that all the (explitive deleted) of the world just melts away and she is truly free. It is still is a very fun movie not heavy handed, just a pure delight.
Top ten favorites.......2007-07-21
From beginning to end, you will be blown away by this movie. Hilarious yet moving, creative and real, full of imagination. Excellent acting, directing and filming...Would rate it higher then 5 stars if possible.
Movie Buff.......2007-07-19
One of the funniest "off-beat" comedies I have seen. This will be a cult classic for years to come.

Classic Double Bill Now On DVD........2007-08-28
I have waited for years to see these titles on DVD and at last they are finally here. Anyone who grew up watching late night horror shows on local TV probably saw these films at one time or another especially THE RETURN OF DRACULA. Both were made by Gramercy Productions a division of Levy-Gardner-Laven an outfit that produced shows for television in the 50's and 60's (most notably THE RIFLEMAN and THE BIG VALLEY). What sets these 2 films apart from other B-movie horrors of the era are the use of once major stars (Francis Lederer, John Beal) who were really good actors, maximum use of their minimum budgets (like Val Lewton in the 40's), and the fact that both screenplays were written by a woman (Pat Fielder) which gives a slightly different perspective to the proceedings where you wind up caring more about the characters most notably John Beal in THE VAMPIRE. Unlike Val Lewton's pictures these are 1950's films and both contain some truly graphic moments which are still effective today. Of the two my personal favorite is THE VAMPIRE although THE RETURN OF DRACULA is overall the better film. Excellent black and white photography and effective background music contribute to the overall atmosphere. While the low budget shows through from time to time and John Beal's make-up is a mixed bag (although THE VAMPIRE is a Jekyll/Hyde story rather than a supernatural one), if you're a fan of low budget 50's horror films than these both deliver the goods. Now if MIDNITE MOVIES (which says MGM but is owned by Fox) would just double up THE MONSTER THAT CHALLENGED THE WORLD and THE FLAME BARRIER (the other two Gramercy films made at the same time) then that would be a real cause for celebration. You could then compare them with the Richard Gordon English horror/sci-fi films (see my Listmania lists) made at the same time and boy would that be a trip.
Two minor classics finally released!.......2007-08-19
I've been waiting for these 2 movies to be released on DVD and finally they will be. RETURN features an excellent portrayal of Dracula by Francis Lederer. No boo-hooing about the lonely life of a bloodsucker for him--his Dracula is pure and (given the way vamps are often portrayed today)refreshingly E-V-I-L. It's amazing that he really didn't want to play this part and not at all evident. VAMPIRE is another favorite, a really tragic tale of a caring doctor who accidentally becomes addicted to some experimental pills that cause him to regress into a vampire like beast. Both are highly recommended, minor classics.
welcome back, Midnight Movies.......2007-08-15
I'm really glad to see that MGM and Fox both have resurrected this excellent DVD series after a long hiatus (here's hoping that Lion's Gate will do the same with their Samuel Z. Arkoff Cult Classics series). This is probably the best of the bunch. As a previous reviewer noted, Return of Dracula is a minor classic and well worth seeing, and The Vampire, though not quite as good, makes for a perfect companion piece. Hopefully both MGM and Fox will keep this series going, as there is I'm sure plenty more in the vaults. Most wished for title: Burn Witch Burn, which came out on VHS only in this series, just prior to the introduction of DVD, so howzabout a DVD reissue?
A lost classic! And a lost....well, decent b-movie.......2007-08-05
Classic horror fans rejoice! Return of Dracula, though previously available on VHS, has been out-of-print for years. If you've never seen it, it's a suprisingly well-done black & white horror film from 1958.
In a plot that, oddly enough, echoes Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt, Count Dracula (a sublime Francis Lederer) relocates to California to live with supposed relatives. And although it's unrelated to the Hammer Films' Dracula films of the same period, it certainly holds its own against those more-polished efforts. The vampire's demise is somewhat graphic for the time.
The Vampire, while arguably the lesser film here, is by no means a waste of time. John Beal generates sympathy as a small-down doctor afflicted with the "disease" of vampirism. Fifties genre favorite Kenneth Tobey is on hand as the local sheriff. While both of these films are basically drive-in stuff, The Vampire's low-budget roots are more obvious, particularly in some laughably-bad make-up work.
If you've been through most or all of the films in the Hammer, AIP or similar catalogs, you're in for a real treat here. Highly recommended for Return of Dracula alone.

Jack Klugman and Tony Randall give an advanced course in chemistry in the auspicious first season of The Odd Couple, which would only get better as the veteran character actors made themselves at home in their signature roles and the series switched from a laugh track to a live audience. In these first episodes, The Odd Couple hews pretty much to the voice and spirit of Neil Simon's play about mismatched roommates, sloppy sportswriter Oscar Madison and "miserable, picky, irritating" photographer Felix Unger ("That was the point," defends series executive producer and writer Garry Marshall, who provides lively audio introductions for each episode and commentary for the pilot). Playing pivotal roles this first season are Felix and Oscar's poker playing buddies, Murray the cop (Al Molinaro), Vinnie, Roy, and Speed, the fabulous Pigeon sisters (Monica Evans and Carole Shelley reprising their Broadway and film roles), and, of course, Neil Hefti's jaunty, jazzy theme, which was introduced in the 1968 film. As with M*A*S*H, the series would establish its own identity and supplant previous incarnations in the public's consciousness. The Odd Couple was never a ratings smash before it became a syndication staple.
The series' loyal following is amply rewarded with this five-disc set. In addition to all 24 first season episodes, a bonus disc contains four billed as "Tony and Jack's Favorite Episodes," including the one where Oscar attacks Felix in his sleep, and the duo are paired as contestants on the game show Password. In a clip from The Mike Douglas Show, Tony Randall promotes the series, and somehow ends up challenging Douglas and Pat Boone to a push-up contest (Boone wins!). A reunited Randall and Klugman, his voice a rasp following his throat cancer surgery, are seen in a priceless clip from a 1993 performance of The Odd Couple to benefit Randall's National Actor's Theatre. A gag reel is negligible, but Klugman contributes home videos of a book tour and he provides commentary for a clip of him winning his first Emmy Award ("I've never seen this," he says delightedly). The Odd Couple is the very model of a classic character-driven comedy. From its dream-team casting to the literate, witty writing, there is nothing odd about why this series' remains one of the most beloved in all TV Land. --Donald Liebenson

Product Description
Two divorced New Yorkers---a slob and a fussbudget---try to live together "without driving each other crazy" in this classic sitcom based on Neil Simon's hit play and movie. Both Jack Klugman and Tony Randall won Emmys in the leads, the latter in the final year of a five-season run. "Now if I only had a job," Randall said at the Emmy gala. The show inspired two remakes, one an animated series portraying the main characters as a cat and a dog, and a 1982-83 version with a mostly black cast.
Customer Reviews:
Brilliance marred by technical problem.......2007-09-14
The content is solid 5-star material, and other reviewers have already covered well the brilliance of the acting and writing that made The Odd Couple one of the best sitcoms ever produced. However, while the video transfer is excellent, the audio is unsynchronized to the video to varying degrees. Sometimes the voices are so out of synch with the lips that it is very distracting. Perhaps this flaw is not present in all copies of the DVDs, but let the buyer beware.
Best Sitcom ever.......2007-08-27
I grew up watching the Odd-Couple and watching these as a 40+ year old adult I still finf this series hilarious! And I even find some adult humor I missed as a kid in the show! If you are a fan this DVD collection is a MUST own. Can't wait to get them all!

All of these films are top notch films and will be ejoyed for years and years. The format of these dvds are beautiful and the picture is just as well. I also enjoy all the extras on each dvd. I recommend this set for any family who loves these classic films, you won't be disapointed.
Not the newer State Fair.......2007-08-26
I would have purchased this item if it had contained the State Fair with Pat Boone and Bobby Darin as claimed. But as the picture on the cover clearly depicts the older version I was not interested.

I have enjoyed having them as my own and adding to my collection so I can watch them whenever I want and as often as I want but most especially with no commercials and no editing!! Thanks.
Fun, Fun, Fun.......2007-06-03
We love the effort that has been put into these DVDs. We will often set the disk to play just the "song" chapters.
We use the "sing-a-long" setting to teach our daughter to read.
If you love the music purchase this set. If you love the movies purchase this set.

Three days in the summer of 1863, at a place called Gettysburg. Although it received a theatrical release, this four-hour depiction of the bloody Civil War battle was shot as a made-for-television film. But no taint of cheapness or shortcuts should stick to this magnificent picture (well, except maybe for those phony-looking mustaches). Based on Michael Shaara's book The Killer Angels, this film takes a refreshingly slow, thorough approach to the intricacies of battle. In ordinary circumstances, those intricacies might seem of importance only to fans of military strategy or Civil War enthusiasts, yet in Gettysburg they come across as the very stuff of life, death, and unexpected heroism. If the film has a problem, it's that it climaxes too early: the first long segment, detailing the struggle of a "civilian soldier," Union Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain (Jeff Daniels), to hold his ground against long odds, is an enthralling piece of moviemaking. Daniels, in a heartbreaking performance, does his best film work. Other cast members include Tom Berenger, Sam Elliott, and Martin Sheen as Robert E. Lee. Richard Jordan, in his final role, gives a powerhouse performance as Confederate general Lewis A. Armistead. Oh, and you can also try to spot Ted Turner, whose company produced the film, as a Confederate soldier. Writer-director Ronald F. Maxwell seems inspired by the gravity of the battle; long as it is, every moment of Gettysburg is informed by a nobility of purpose. --Robert Horton
Customer Reviews:
A must for Civil War buffs but others may be less excited.......2007-08-31
"Gettysburg" is an epic recreation of this pivotal battle of the US Civil War.
It combines huge battle scenes with intimate conversations among the famous personalities including Lee, Pickett, Armistead, Longstreet on the Confederate side, and Hancock and Chamberlain on the Federal side.
Standout performance are Tom Berenger as the cautious Longstreet and Martin Sheen as the legendary Robert E. Lee.
At over four hours in length "Gettysburg" will test the patience of many viewers. It has feel of a mini-series and would be ideal to spread over two nights rather than watching it in one go. The characters indulge in a little too much speechifying and some of the battle scenes - staged using Civil War reenactors - seem a bit tame - but overall this is a well-made film.
(****) for Civil War buffs and (***) for everybody else.
Gettysburg CD.......2007-08-28
This is a great movie. This is our second purchase of this CD as we scratched our first one and wanted Gettysburg in our movie library.
The novel comes to life.......2007-08-19
This is a nice transfer of novel to screen. Michael Shaara's work is well known to those interested in the Civil War. It used an interesting technique--selecting several characters and reporting their observations of events and their perspectives and understanding of those. Among the key characters from whose eyes we see things include: Robert E. Lee, James Longstreet, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, Winfield Scott Hancock, and--from the First Day--John Buford. This is a long movie, over 4 hours. But to encapsulate as sprawling a battle as Gettysburg, this is altogether appropriate.
What of the cast? Overall, awfully good for a movie that is far from a traditional theater release. Martin Sheen plays Robert E. Lee (I'm not sure that he's as wooden as some reviewers comment, but his "It's all in God's hands now" does become a bit stale by the end); Jeff Daniels is quite affecting as Chamberlain (he has an appropriate academic air and portrays an amateur's sense of warfare); Sam Elliott as the hard-bitten, crusty Buford is almost perfectly cast; Tom Berenger does a nice job portraying Longstreet's discomfort with strategy and tactics and a foreboding of the battle's outcome. Secondary characters are played well, too, such as Stephen Lang's George Picket, Richard Jordan's Lew Armistead, and Kevin Conway's Sergeant Kilrain. All in all, the acting is quite well done.
The scope of the movie? It begins with the hours before the meeting engagement at Gettysburg (this was an "accidental" battle with neither side anticipating a great fight there). Among the scenes is a delightful meeting among Armistead, Pickett, and Longstreet in which a pleasantly diverting discussion of Charles Darwin takes place.
The first day featured the confrontation between Harry Heth's division and Buford's cavalry. As the pressure begins to be too much, General John Reynolds, at the head of the fearsome fighter of the First Corps arrives. At this point, the movie gets a but fuzzy historically. One gets the sense that the line starts collapsing at one place as the Iron Brigade arrives at another, under the direct command of Reynolds. This is misleading; the forces to the immediate north of the Iron Brigade did not collapse until after Reynolds' placement of the fighting Westerners and his death. The day ends with a powerful meeting between Buford and the Union generals gathering at Gettysburg.
On the Second Day, the key action in the movie includes Devil's Den and Little Round Top. On that day, much more happened, including desperate fighting on Cemetery Ridge and Culp's Hill, not depicted in this movie (but the movie is already long at 4 hours, so this is merely a minor quibble). The DVD accepts pretty much without question Chamberlain's rather self-serving version of the 20th Maine's stalwart fight, protecting the left flank of the Union army. Nonetheless, this is a powerful scene and works most nicely.
The Third Day? The focus is Pickett's Charge (technically a misnomer, since other divisions were involved as well (Pettigrew and Trimble commanded troops as well). The tension of the day is well portrayed. E. Porter Alexander directed a massive cannonade to try to wreak havoc on the Union Center. At the close of the barrage, the 12,000-15,000 Confederate troops are shown beginning their doomed charge. The music swells in a most affecting scene. And then the carnage begins, with Union artillery and later rifled musket fire decimating the attackers.
Much poignancy in this third day. The personal courage of Hancock (which appears to be historically accurate), the brave last stand by Armistead (also correct), the effort by Lee to inspire his troops after the repulse, and so on.
There are some historical glitches here. The movie misses many dramatic moments (although how could it be otherwise with the time limitations of a movie format?). On the whole, however, this is a powerful version of the critical battle at Gettysburg. Well worth watching.
An Long, but Intriguing Epic!.......2007-07-09
This film was Ted Turner's baby. He wanted to produce a movie that re-enacted the bloddiest battle on American soil. When it was completed, the film was over 4 hours long. Much too long for theatrical release. So he premiered it on his cable network, TNT in 1993. The battle scenes itself are worth the long run time. It's not too graphic and works as a historical referrence. That may be it's downfall, as well. Another is the long stretches of dialogue. Though needed for continuity, after a while, the film started to suffer from overindulgence. If you can endure it's length, you might find this film rather entertaining. Give it a try!
Gettysburg.......2007-06-12
Gettysburg is a great movie that was inspired by one of the most decisive battles during the Civil War. Ronald Maxwell, the director, hired a historain, James McPherson so help him in making sure the battle scenes were as true as they actually happened in 1863. Gettysburg has three days of fighting along with events that led up to the war making it very gory and action-packed. There is alot of death in this movie but since Gettysburg was one of the bloodiest battles with 50,000 American casualties, the amount of death in the movie is appropriate.
The first day of fighting consists of Buford trying to maintain his position in Gettysburg to make sure that the Union army has the best land position. The second day of fighting is centrally located at Cemetery Hill, Little Round Top, and Culp's Hill. The third and final day at Gettysburg consisted of one of the most famous battles at Gettysburg: Pickett's Charge. This is the day that Lee realizes that he has to retreat due to too many Confederate losses.
This movie is, historically, very correct. The locations of the battles are historicall accurate along with the general's names. Mostly everything in this movie was, in McPherson's eyes, historically accurate. One can learn alot about the Civil War by watching this movie because it shows how the soldiers felt and lived and the effects of war on them. It also talks about past and upcoming issues in the war. This was a great historical movie but also very entertaining and i would recommend it to anybody that was interested, or wants to become knowledgable about the Civil War.

Kathy Bates stars as an unhappy wife trying to get her husband's attention in this amusing and moving 1991 screen adaptation of Fannie Flagg's novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. After befriending a lonely old woman (Jessica Tandy), Bates hears the story of a lifelong friendship between two other women (Mary Stuary Masterson and Mary-Louise Parker, seen in flashback) who once ran a cafe in town against many personal odds. The tale inspires Bates to take further command over her life, and there director Jon Avnet (Up Close and Personal), in his first feature, has fun with the film. Bates develops a real attitude toward her thickheaded spouse at home and some uppity girls in a parking lot, but dignity is generally the key to Avnet's approach with the story's crucial relationships. Tandy is a joy and clearly loves the element of mystery attached to her character, and Masterson and Parker are excellent in the historical sequences. --Tom Keogh

ATMOSPHERE AT ITS BEST.......2007-08-23
This is a magical movie that pulls you into it and when it is finished, deposits you back in your living room. Every character is so well written, and the double story line is done to perfection. You will want to try Fried Green Tomatoes and go visit Whistle Stop after you see this one!
an incredible classic.......2007-07-20
One of the best classics ever from the 90s. Emotional, heart breaking, encouraging and amazingly funny. It can touch your heart so deep and you go from an emotion to another over and over. When you have a teardpop on your cheek, you can find yourself laughing. It is also a great pleasue to watch all of the 4 leading ladies. They are unbeliable! Especially Kathy Bates and Jessica Tandy.
I've seen this movie many times and will see lots more because time to time, I know I'll feel like to see and hear Idgie's story again.
It just captures you and hold you there. You should have it!
TOWANDA!
...At the Whistle Stop Cafe.......2007-07-17
Towanda!!! How wonderful to be able to see this amazing movie again! The two stories of Idgy and Ruth as young women and Evelyn and Ninny as older and older yet women tied together so lovingly and well by Fanny Flagg in her book. I am so glad I bought this movie for my collection.

Loved It!.......2007-07-12
I was already a fan of this movie, but after watching it again, watching the special documentary about the making of the movie, and then watching the movie with the director commenting on the details that went into the movie, I REALLY loved it!! What wonderful acting, wonderful storytelling and great period detail!! A real treat!!!!! Even if you've seen the movie several times before!
