5 out of 5 stars A Fitting Tribute.......2007-08-31

This documentary is a tribute to the 40th anniversary of a season that deserves to be remembered forever. The footage is incredible, and the interviews are great. There's great bonus footage, including the original t.v. tribute from 1967. Make sure you get the package with the bonus disc, that has the entire next to last game of the season. Quite a historical record that really shows how the game has changed in 40 years.

5 out of 5 stars 67 BOSTON RED SOX.......2007-08-23

THIS WAS THE YEAR I BECAME A SOX FAN. IT WAS MY FIRST RED SOX HEARTBREAK BUT IT WAS AN AWESOME TIME. I WENT BACK IN TIME 40 YEARS. IT WAS GREAT.

4 out of 5 stars Brings back great memories.......2007-08-07

Great DVD with most of the material coming from NESN specials aired in 2007. My only disappointment was I thought that the 2nd DVD had the final game of the year vs. the Twins but it actually contains the Saturday (next to last) game.

5 out of 5 stars Great Memories of Impossible Dream Season.......2007-07-24

Anyone who lived through the thrill of the 1967 season will love this DVD set, anyone too young will still enjoy it as it the season is the birth of the Red Sox Nation. The DVD of the next to final game is outstanding, the color is as good as todays. It is also nice to see the difference between broadcasts of 1967 and today. Great stuff, all Red Sox fans would love it.

5 out of 5 stars Heart-Breaking If You're a Twins Fan.......2007-07-17

I remember that weekend like it happened a few days ago. One game up in the standings, two games to play, the Twins had to win only once to go to the World Series. Just one, lousy game...

I've seen parts of the DVD, and will buy a copy for myself. It was great to see Killebrew, Oliva, Yaz, Petrocelli and others of that era again, although I would have preferred to see Sunday's clinching game.

No matter; the late Ray Scott was the Twins'announcer in 1967, and he said he got a gut-wrenching feeling during Saturday's game the Twins would not beat Boston. He said it was one of the most depressing feelings he'd ever experienced as a broadcaster. To us faithful in Minnesota, those losses were as crushing as any a Minnesota team ever suffered. And that includes the four Super Bowls.

Billy Chapel (Kevin Costner) is having a bad day. His girlfriend Jane (Kelly Preston, stunning as ever) says she's leaving, and his boss (Brian Cox) says he's selling the business and ace employee Billy may be out of job. Sounds like business as usual for an old-fashioned veteran. However, the business is baseball and for Billy Chapel, the 40-year old former all-star for the Detroit Tigers, it means his career--and his life--is at a crossroads.

Although it is no Bull Durham, For Love of the Game finds a solid and very believable role for Costner. The film is based on Michael Shaara's (The Killer Angels) stream-of-consciousness novel (the rough manuscript was found after his death 1988). The entire film takes place on Billy's day on the mound against the Yankees, a meaningless late-season game for the Tigers, but everything for Billy. In flashbacks, he lingers over his long relationship with Jane and his baseball career (from World Series heroism to a career-threatening injury). His one viable link to the game at hand is his catcher, played winningly by John C. Reilly. Costner, like Chapel, is looking for one more great performance, but the film is too simplistic and loopy at times to resonate. The love story has an extra helping of cuteness, and legendary baseball announcer Vin Scully nearly takes on a leading role, waxing grandiloquent. It's no grand slam, but a solid double. --Doug Thomas

5 out of 5 stars "You and Me...One more time!".......2007-05-08

Those were the words of "Gus", John C. Riley(the more i see of this guy the more i like him)is the big hearted, battle worn,FAITHFUL,TRUSTY O'l catcher in this baseball guy movie turned LOVE STORY. This is the story of Billy Chapel. A once great pitcher for the Detroit Tigers on the brink of retirement. It's a story of a man who's got the biggest decision of his life/career to make...being traded by the new owners of the ball club and keep playing but for another team other than the only team he has ever known Professionally...or retirement?...If you're a use to be athlete...this tugs at your heart, taking you back to the last time you were able to suit up and play the greatest game in the world...baseball! Billy is a man who's obviously in love with the game and is having a heck of a time letting her go. Now by using the word "her'...i can describe both the game of baseball and Billy's "on again, off again" relationship with Jane Aubrey(the very Beautiful Kelly Preston), a New York Fashion magazine Editor who's more than a lil' hesitant with Costner's character's old school approach with their realtionship. Billy thinks (like i and countless other guys have) like a typical guy who takes advantage of a good thing to the point that he drives it away. Billy is old school and he isn't willing to commit to Jane, which she deperately needs him to do. Jane has been done wrong in the past more than a few times. She's a single mom of a teenage girl( played by the very CUTE Jena Malone)who's starting to challenge her mom's ways. In all ways this movie is just about life! Single parenting, being a stubborn man, relationships with friends, saying goodbye, the love of a good woman... and o'h yeah...the deepest love a man can have for the game of Baseball. The movie is set during the last game of what has been a very rough season for Billy and the Tigers. Inning by inning Billy goes through refections of his relationship with Jane and Heather(Jena's character), his career as a dominant pitching god for one team, the Detroit Tigers & everything from a career threatning injury and just plain old woman trouble. He's had a good life as a ball player but his career is coming to a close and now he has the decision of retirement or playing for another team. All the while his heart is with Jane but he is too stubborn to tell her how he really feels and just about pushes her completely away. Like a typical guy, Billy realizes and goes after her at all costs...Did i forget to mention the fact that this is all going on during a game that Billy just so happens to be pitching a perfect game in?...news of the sale of the Tigers forces Billy's hand to make a decision of retirement or trade...this triggers Billy's reflections. He realizes that's he's in love with Jane and he needs more than just "the game" to be complete in life. In typical Movie fashion Billy pitches the perfect game, retires, and goes after Jane. In the ending scene,Billy pours his heart to Jane at the airport in New York...he palns to chase her overseas but by chance she delays her flight to watch the game and is wrestling with her own feelings for Billy and trusting him. All in all, this is a great movie especially for the Costner buffs out there. I personally love all of Costner's baseball movies and i'd put this one at the top of my personal list! This is not a movie to rent, it's a definate buy!!! Billy Chapel is the man everybody wants to be and the man that no man wants to admit that he is...?!

4 out of 5 stars Baseball: Metaphor for life.......2007-04-24

This movie wasn't really at all about baseball, but about the metaphor for life baseball is. Overall if you are looking for a film that is going to capture what baseball represents, then this is it!

5 out of 5 stars Why it is called "America's Favorite Pasttime".......2007-03-28

Whether you love baseball or not, if you love a good movie, you will love this one. It is told in a unique and clever use of present time and flashback. Kevin Costner, what can I say? He had to be a ball player in another life. John C. Reilly looked as natural as a catcher on the diamond as he did on the stage as a song and dance man in "Chicago". Kelly Preston, my first time seeing her left me breathless. A superb job. Maybe I'm prejudiced because I do love baseball, but so will you after this. And you too may learn to hate the Yankee's fans.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best.......2007-02-20

one of the best baseball DVD's out.....Follows the life of a washed up pitcher, as he flirts with immortality.....I recommend to any baseball fan

4 out of 5 stars Nice date night movie!.......2007-01-31

Add one part love story and one part baseball sports flick and you have a great date night movie! This is a wonderful movie to watch. Kelly Preston and Kevin Costner do really great jobs of playing their roles in this movie, but more importantly the storyline is really well done. Costner plays an aging professional pitcher at the end of his career. On the last game he pitches, we see not only what is going on in his mind as a professional pitcher, but also flashbacks of his career over the years and his on again/off again romantic relationship with Preston's character. Definitely worth watching

A baseball comedy and slob comedy rolled into one, this one actually works as entertainment, if not as a piece of cinematic mastery. James Gammon is the has-been manager hired to lead the last-place Cleveland Indians whose owner wants them to lose so she can sell them. But the team of has-beens and never-wases that he assembles (including Tom Berenger, Charlie Sheen, Corbin Bernsen, and Wesley Snipes) develops a sense of pride and turns the team around. There's plenty of rowdy humor about sex, race, and whatever else they can make fun of. Look for Rene Russo (in her first film role) as Berenger's romantic interest; Snipes also had his first showy role as Willie Mays Hayes, the team's base-stealing ace. --Marshall Fine

5 out of 5 stars The Indians actually win?.......2007-09-09

My husband, an ex-patriot living in Australia, loved this movie. It was worth the expense to get it changed to our format. Wish more baseball dvds were available in zone 4 format. Excellent baseball sequences with an excellent humourous storyline. Just loved it. The casting makes this movie really great.

5 out of 5 stars wild thing I think I love you.......2007-08-07

This is a really good fun movie I could watch again and again. Love all these stars and the script is timeless.

5 out of 5 stars A Perfect Pitch.......2007-07-21

This is the best baseball film I have ever seen. This film really brings the game to the big screen. Usually in these types of films you get actors, and actresses who can't or have never played the game. As you will see in the extras on the discs, the actors really did learn how to play their positions well for the baseball scenes. If you have never seen a baseball film before, this is the one you should see.

5 out of 5 stars Major League 2.......2007-06-03

It was a pretty good movie and I enjoyed seeing it again, but why were they playing in Baltimore's Camden Yards? Cleveland Municipal was still open, but Jacobs' Field wasn't opened until 1994.

4 out of 5 stars Major League 2.......2006-07-18

Ok. As this movie follows on from the first Major League movie, expect laughs and a couple of new faces. It continues with the same players who end up coming back to play for another season. The "Wild Thing" has gone commercial, is always looking at selling something, you have Roger Dorn who now owns the team and is slowly going bankrupt. The team morale is down and they end up on a losing streak and then the witch comes back and buys the team back again. Watch for the part with the japanese warrior and pedro exchanging the phrase of "losing your marbles". Great movie for those who are interested in a quick laugh while enjoying watching baseball.

5 out of 5 stars The Indians Are Back!.......2006-01-15

The boys from Cleveland are back to prove that last year's team was no fluke in this great sequel film. After winning their divison, the Indians were defeated by the Chicago White Sox in the ALCS. After losing, team owner Rachel Phelps (Margaret Whitton) sold the team to former third baseman Roger Dorn (Corbin Bernsen). Roger then brought in high-priced free agent catcher Jack Parkman (David Keith) to bolster the Indians line up. However, incumbent catcher Jake Taylor (Tom Berenger) is still on the team, along with another catching prospect, Rube Baker (Eric Brushotter). Pedro Cerrano (Dennis Haysbert), Willie Mays Hayes (Omar Epps), and Rick "Wild Thing" Vaughn (Charlie Sheen) also return from last year's team, along with manager Lou Brown (James Gammon).

Hayes starred in his own action movie in the off-season, and also tried turning into a power hitter, much to the chagrin of manager Brown. Cerrano discovered Buddhism, and now treats everybody as a friend, even the opposing players during a game. Jake's knees finally got the best of him, but Lou asks him to stay on as a coach. Roger soon finds out that he's in way over his head. He overpaid Rachel for the team, and now he has only enough money left for two months of operations. His first move is to trade Parkman to the hated White Sox for outfielder Isuro Tanaka (Takashi Ishibashi). Tanaka immediately challenges Cerrano, saying he has "no marbles". Roger's second move is to re-sell the team back to Rachel, much to the horror of everyone else! Rick Vaughn has shed his "Wild Thing" image. He and his agent/girlfriend Rebecca Flannery (Alison Doody) have concentrated on getting commercial advertisements and endorsement opportunities. Meanwhile, Rick has lost a lot of the zip off of his once-blazing fastball, and he's now getting hit hard by opposing teams.

Their season starts out rather slowly, just like the previous year, and to make matters worse, Lou Brown suffers a heart attack and is forced to step down as manager. Jake is given the job as manager in Lou's absence, and it falls on his shoulders to mold the team back into winners. Will Jake be able to get the team back on track. Will Rick, Willie, and Pedro re-discover their lost talents?

Many times, sequels fail to live up to the success of the original film, but that is not the case with this excellent movie. Major League 2 is every bit as good as the original. Having everyone except Wesley Snipes back from the first movie helped to make this movie so much fun to watch, and Omar Epps does a fantastic job taking over for Snipes as Willie Mays Hayes. Newcomers David Keith (Parkman), Takashi Ishibashi (Tanaka), and Eric Brushotter (Baker) add new flavor with their new characters, and Bob Uecker returns as the zany Indians announcer Harry Doyle.

I give this movie my highest recommendation. Baseball fans will surely enjoy watching the Indians in their chase to win the World Series.

2 out of 5 stars Not up to the standards of the original.......2005-12-21

While the original film was great and is one of my all-time favcorites, this sequel in no way comes up to the same standards of humor or storyline. In fact, it comes off as a blatant attempt to squeeze a few more dollars off of the original films followers. You don't need to believe me. Try renting it before you put down hard-earned cash on this wannabe...

Description

More than any other sport, baseball is a game of numbers. Statistics and records help measure the greats of the game against their peers - against generations - and this ever-evolving record book is what helps give baseball renewed life. But not every mark in the game is destined to change, for there are but a few that are indeed unbreakable. Legendary pitcher Roger Clemens narrates Baseball's Most Unbreakable Feats DVD, a detailed look at 10 seemingly untouchable baseball achievements.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Pleasant, diverting.......2007-08-27

With lots of brief interviews, this video ably recaps why the feats herein rated are deemed 'unbreakable.' The ranking itself leans in favor of recent feats, which is understandable since only recent and current MLBers are interviewed, not historians or statisticians. Clemens serves as an amiable host.

4 out of 5 stars Some major leaguers vote for the 10 most unbreakable baseball records.......2007-08-12

"Baseball's Most Unbreakable Feats" looks at the ten most unbreakable feats in baseball as determined by a vote of players and managers. There are career marks like Nolan Ryan's 5,714 strikeouts, Pete Rose's 4,256 hits, Cy Young's 511 wins, and Rickey Henderson's 1406 stolen bases. There are also streaks, from Cal Ripken, Jr.'s 2,632 consecutive games played and Eric Gagne's 84 consecutive saves to the New York Yankees winning five World Series in a row and Joe DiMaggio hitting safely in 56 games. Finally, there are single season marks, with Ted Williams being the last to bat .400 in a season, Bob Gibson having an E.R.A. of 1.12, and Henderson stealing 130 bases in a single season. Hosted by Roger Clemens, several dozen baseball players past and present share their thoughts on the achievement and the likelihood of it being unbreakable before the results are released to establish the order of the top 10.

While it is fun to see major leaguers "do the math" to explain why nobody is going to win 511 games, what I appreciated more were the attempts to explain why things have changed in the sport to make some of these records unbreakable (e.g., pitchers using the slide-step to keep base runners close, lowering the pitching mound). The star quotient is a bit more on the players from the past, from Ted Williams and George Brett to Joe Garagiola and Bob Gibson, than it is for current stars in terms of the talking heads that pop up, but there are a few current stars (e.g., Johan Santana) and future Hall of Famers (e.g., Mike Piazza) who share their thoughts.

If you add up the percentage figures given for these 10 feats they add up to 211. It seems that the players were asked to vote for three of the feats on the list they were presented with and there were more than 10 on that list. Four honorable mentions are provided in the bonus features and they must have all gotten less than 5%, but there have to be more feats that do not even get mentioned, which is why it is so much fun for baseball fans to debate these sort of things. Will anybody beat Rogers Hornsby's .424 single season batting average? What about Ty Cobb's lifetime average of .367? How about starting 51 games, finishing 48 of them and winning 41 of them like Jack Chesbro did? Ed Walsh pitched 464 innings in a season, Bob Feller walked 208 batters in a season, and Pete Alexander had 16 shutouts. Chief Wilson hit 36 triples in one year and Sam "Wahoo" Crawford had 309 triples for his career and 51 inside the park home runs. Cy Young lost 316 games over his career. Ty Cobb stole home 54 times, including 8 in one year.

The one thing baseball fans know before they watch this DVD is that they are probably not going to agree with these ten choices and they are definitely not going to agree with their final order (of these 10 it is those 511 wins by Cy Young that I would say is most unbeatable and it does not end up number 1). With five-man rotations and middle relievers, set-up men, and relief specialists, a whole bunch of those career pitching marks are safe. By the time you start looking over the possibilities I think what would be more interesting is not which of these records are unbreakable, but rather which ones might end up being broken. On several of the feats covered, such as hitting two grand slams in one inning (not to mention hitting them off of the same pitcher), it could well be that no one will ever have the opportunity. Another interesting part of this presentation is when players speculate on who might be able to bat .400, hit in 56 games in a row, or get to 4,256 hits (Ichiro and Derek Jeter get mentioned a lot). But time and time again players crunch the numbers and point out if pitchers are not winning 30 games or striking out 300 batters multiple times that the likes of Young and Ryan are never going to be caught.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING!.......2007-06-01

I LOVED this movie! It has many funny bloopers and MLB players! I rated this 5-star because there wasn't anything higher!

1 out of 5 stars Waste of Money.......2007-05-18

Don't waste your money on this terrible DVD. The title is deceiving; there are almost no bloopers in it. Instead the DVD is filled with boring interviews and staged pranks that put my baseball loving 11-year-old son to sleep within 20 minutes.
I gave it one star because there is no choice for zero stars.
Spend your money on something else.

3 out of 5 stars OK, but not great.......2007-01-12

This was somewhat funny, but I wouldn't call it great. My 10-year-old liked it a lot. I thought it dragged quite a bit, not very fast-paced. Too many repeats of the same theme. Would have liked to have seen a lot more on-field bloopers & funny plays.

1 out of 5 stars PLEASE, DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!.......2006-09-08

I am a very disappointed baseball fan.
I waited a few months for this video to be released. When it arrived to my office, I went home immediately to watch it... I ended up seeing the video on fast play, just to tell I saw it all... it only made me smile (not laugh) once.
It's a pity I cant place no-stars for this...
Do something better with your money and buy a pizza... believe me.

5 out of 5 stars MLB Bloopers DVD review.......2006-07-31

This DVD was better than I could have asked for. It uses footage from the tv show This Week In Baseball [TWIB], and real baseball games over the past few years to cover the silly side of America's Pastime. It goes behind the scenes with a bunch of players including Tim Hudson, Ryan Dempster, select Phillies players, & many others, as well as looking at past characters who stand out in the game such as Tommy Lasorda and Yogi Berra. If you love TWIB's "How 'Bout That" section of the show, you will adore this DVD.

As far as I can tell, every major league team is shown, though some have the spotlight on them more than others. This is a must have for any baseball fan. It's by far one of the best MLB DVDs released in a long time.

In the days following terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001, sports might have seemed trivial and irrelevant. But Nine Innings from Ground Zero demonstrates how New Yorkers, in fact, embraced baseball with a cathartic passion, turning Yankees and Mets games into spontaneous rituals of grief and showcases for resilience and the restoration of normalcy. Off the field, both teams found a way to comfort the city to the extent they could, visiting firefighters and relatives of the dead; the Yankees' Derek Jeter personally reached out to the young daughter of one of the pilots killed by hijackers. The Yankees' ride to the World Series that year is covered extensively here, and the team's up-and-down dramas playing against Phoenix coincide with such off-field horrors as an anthrax scare and more warnings of terrorism. Outstanding game footage and interwoven analysis of baseball action and real-world events make Nine Innings unique. --Tom Keogh

    Description

The tragedy and horror of the 9/11 attacks triggered a host of changes in America, including a reassessment of the role of sports and its accompanying hero-worship. Batting averages and home run totals were no longer paramount, particularly in New York, but in the fall of 2001 baseball played a significant role in the city's recovery efforts. Nine Innings from Ground Zero revisits that remarkable and inspiring phenomenon.

    5 out of 5 stars remember 9/11.......2007-05-17

the main reason i bought this video is because the price finally dropped. i happened to be at this - my first- world series. i watched games three and four in yankee stadium after making the long trek out from colorado in late october. i'm very experiential and had to visit ground zero. every time i'm in nyc i visit the same corner. jeter's november heroics are memorable and by kim's meltdown. he never really recovered from those home runs. kim was just traded from the colorado rockies to the marlins. unfortunately, the yankees lost that one on a luis gonzalez's bloop single off mariano rivera, but there was nothing like watching president bush throw out the first pitch, the wtc flag unfurled over yankee stadium and lee greenwood singing.

4 out of 5 stars The World Series the Yankees SHOULD have won..........2006-11-22

Being a Yankees fan, it always baffles me that the Yankees lost the World Series of 2001. If there ever, EVER was a year they deserved to win, 2001 was it.

I enjoyed the footage of the series as well as the interviews with the team and the family members who were impacted by the series. This documentary will make you laugh and cry. Above all, it will make you remember...

2 out of 5 stars parochial and myopic.......2006-06-20

One of the most monumental events in the history of American sports, the 2001 World Series is perhaps more worthy than any other sports topic of a comprehensive, informed and inspired film document. This film is not that document.

The premise of the filmmakers is that the New York Yankees, because they chose to play after September 11 rather than abandoning the season, should be regarded as saints. They then maintain that it was the patriotic duty of the Yankees' opponents to roll over and lose in order to improve the moods of their non-playing interview subjects (all New Yorkers). Meanwhile, the players responsible for the most courageous and inspiring performance in baseball history are cast as villains, and the city that experienced the greatest moment of sports-inspired civic pride in American history is ignored.

Here are three reasons why this World Series will be talked about in 2051 that were barely, if it all, talked about in this movie:

    1. There has never been a greater contrast in the backgrounds of the two participants in a professional sports championship: the most celebrated, decorated team in American sports history against one that was only playing its fourth season. The Yankees were fielding teams when Arizona was not even a state! I would make the argument that not only was this the most important event in Arizona SPORTS history, but by way of having so little traditionally defined history, this was the biggest thing ever to happen in Arizona period!

    2. By virtue of becoming the first pitcher to win three games in one series since Mickey Lolich, Randy Johnson became the unchallenged star of the series. The most spectacular pitching performer since Nolan Ryan, this series marked his transformation from star to legend. While it's unfortunate that he did not make himself available for interviews that is no reason to be giving him passing mentions instead of prominent ones.

    3. There is no more magical moment in sports than a bottom-of-the-ninth come from behind rally by the home team to win the seventh game of a World Series. What will place this in the realm of the greatest sports legends is that it occurred in the context of a blown save by the greatest relief pitcher in the history of the game.

For Pete's (and Pinnacle Peak's) sake let's all hope that fans from both of these cities someday get the film about this series that they deserve.

5 out of 5 stars I Still Get Tears In My Eyes..........2006-04-09

First of all, I am not a Yankees fan, nor am I a Yankees hater.

This film, although a wee bit heavy handed at times, still brings tears to my eyes...five years since 9/11. It is wonderful to see how a simple game of baseball helped in a small way heal a devastated city and country.

What I liked is that it did not focus on the terrorists or the attack as so much as the healing. It was a film about resolve, not vengeance.

The interviews with the families of the victims were prominently featured, as they should. The ballplayer interviews were to add to the feeling, but the film clearly focused on the famlilies. This ensured that the viewer knew what was truly important.

Although as an Oakland A's fan, I get to relive the moment when Jeremy Giambi should have slid over and over again, I love that I have this in my DVD collection.

*note - as a DVD there are no special features...it's the documentary and that's it...

5 out of 5 stars Hate the Yankees....but love them as human beings........2005-11-23

Being a west-coast sports fan,I have always hated the Yankees. I don't know what got me into buying this dvd but I must say that I am glad I did. This documentary is the story about the city of New York and one of their most beloved sports teams getting by one of the most horrific events in both New York and American History...9/11. If this tragedy was the illness, then the love of Yankee baseball was the cure. While watching "Nine innings from ground zero",my hate towards this team was put aside while watching it as I got to see the side of Yankee stars that one doesn't see off the field. From the young girl who met Derek Jeter after he learned through her letter that she lost her father in the towers...to the firefighters who put on a smile thanks to a surprise visit from Yankee players...to the group of family members of 9/11 victims who got to attend the world series,I was deeply moved by this documentary. We,the sports fans, are so used to hearing stories about too many sport stars who get in trouble with the law or stars who complain about a 7 to 8 figure contract not being enough, that we seem to forget about the few out there who have alot of good in them. The documentary even has an interview with President George Bush that I am glad was included. I don't care if the war in Iraq is right or wrong nor do I care what party he is. It is a proud moment watching the leader of your country throw out the first pitch at the 2001 World Series while the crowd chants...U-S-A...U-S-A!!! I believe this first pitch is the most memorable one on film to date. After watching Nine innings...,am I still a Yankee hater? Yeah, but I love them for bringing hope and smiles to the people of New York. This dvd is recommended to both the sports fan and non-sports fan. All will not be disappointed. "It's a hit"!

5 out of 5 stars HIT BIG/MISS BIG.... THATS HOW HE DID!.......2007-07-19

Babe Ruth was the original rock star. The man who's name became synonomis with $$$ right from the start, and the fast paced, take no B.S. lifestyle. He was one of the coolest cats around, and this movie shows it all!
Alot of people say that the story is innacurate, and to that I say "AW Banana oil!" This movie is the tops. There's only one other movie about the Babe, and that one had him stepping into a dark dingy bar and ordering a milk! Babe Ruth didn't drink no milk. John Goodmans portrayal, if not completely accurate, is at least a lot of fun, and from what I know (I never met the guy in person-did you?) is pretty spot on.
The Babe partied every night of the week, and usually strolled into the game sometime around the second inning to sock one out of the park. He'd smoke a few cigars in the dugout, and usually had a mug of beer waiting for him at home plate. Nobody told The Babe what to do, because he owned. The guy pretty much paid everybodys salary in the day, and is still pretty much the reason why those jerk off Yankees still have so much dough.
He was an animal on and off the field. Just ask the dames that hung all over him. He had two smoking wives.. one a small town waitress, and the other a sexy Zigfield follie (aint that the dream?)
Yeah he had to overcome some serious struggles in life, but don't we all? The guy exuberated a good time, for the folks, and especially the kids, for whom he had the biggest heart in the world... And he told fart jokes at fancy dinners!

    Great lines...
"What do you think of Mary for a name if we have a girl?"
    "I think I need a 20 ounce steak, is what I think."

This movie rules. Check it out.

    4 out of 5 stars Well Done!.......2007-05-14

The Babe is a great baseball movie with a few flaws, mostly in the embellishment of the true facts, but it's miles better than the 1948 movie with William Bendix as the Babe. John Goodman gives his all as he portrays Babe Ruth, a man who enjoyed life a little too much. Other strong performances are given by Kelly McGillis, James Cromwell & Bruce Boxleitner. I recommend this film.

    4 out of 5 stars Well done.......2007-04-04

John Goodman's role is so realistic that I thought I was seeing the Babe many times! He is outstanding in his role as Babe Ruth. Hollywoood liberties, sure ...... but an excellent story and a look at an Baseball hero ........... A must for baseball fans.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Baseball Movie........2006-08-10

A highly enjoyable baseball movie. John Goodman give a good potrayal of the famous slugger. From his rookie year with the Boston Red Sox,the New York Yankees, and his retirement from the Boston Braves.Watch how he responds to a bad call from the plate umpire, saying he ought to get his eyes and ears checked.Babe Ruth was a pitcher with the Boston Red Sox,and in his last year with the Boston Braves, but played outfield with the New York Yankess. Now maybe the film exaggerates the antics of Ruth, but Goodman's potrayal makes them beliveable.

2 out of 5 stars too close to a caricature.......2006-05-11

Be advised that after 45 minutes of the movie my 8 year-old son and I gave up. Goodman seems to have been given the license to "go for broke" with a "larger than life" approach, that leaves little for the viewer to consider of Ruth's actual life. With the broadest of strokes, Goodman plays Ruth self-consciously; the mis-en-scenes are without any surprises and Hollywood-predictable.

Too little was shown to give us the sense of Ruth-as-athlete and the milieu of early 20th century baseball, a fascinating story that awaited telling but missed the opportunity here.

All the glory and classic moments of the Los Angeles Dodgers World Series Championships from 1959 to 1988 are digitally preserved in this one-of-a-kind two-disc DVD collection. This DVD features the official vintage World Series films of the Los Angeles Dodgers World Championships from 1959, 1963, 1965, 1981, and 1988. The passion and excitement of Los Angeles Dodgers baseball was on full display in the first three Fall Classic games in 1959. Each record-setting crowd at The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum swelled beyond 90,000. A tradition of October Baseball in Los Angeles was born. In 1963, Sandy Koufax set the World Series strikeout record of fifteen in Game 1. Again in 1965, pitching was supreme, but this time the Dodgers' speed charged the offense as well. The 1981 and 1988 World Series championships were fueled by the optimism of manager Tommy Lasorda. 1959 - LOS ANGELES DODGERS vs CHICAGO WHITE SOX 1963 - LOS ANGELES DODGERS vs NEW YORK YANKEES 1965 - LOS ANGELES DODGERS vs MINNESOTA TWINS 1981 - LOS ANGELES DODGERS vs NEW YORK YANKEES 1988 - LOS ANGELES DODGERS vs OAKLAND ATHLETICS

Covering two DVDs and over three hours, Vintage World Series Films: Los Angeles Dodgers covers five championship years of the Dodgers following their move from Brooklyn to the West Coast. Beginning with 1959 (a 34-minute film narrated by future legend Vin Scully), it's a time capsule of Dodger history, from the dominance of pitchers Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale to the speed of Maury Wills to their 1981 breakthrough against the New York Yankees. Then in 1988, the Dodgers upended the powerful Oakland A's (led by Bash Brothers Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire) after a storybook home run by gimpy Kirk Gibson off A's closer Dennis Eckersley. Also key was the pitching of Orel Hershiser, who won two WS games after setting a major-league record with 59 consecutive scoreless innings during the regular season. It would have been nice if the set had included the Brooklyn Dodgers' 1955 championship, and the constant MLB logo in the corner of the screen seems like an unnecessary intrusion. --David Horiuchi

For a long time I have been wanting to find some footage of the old Dodger teams playing but MLB have made it hard to see it but this DVD has a lot of what I was looking for.

    5 out of 5 stars Finally.......2006-08-01

After wearing out my VHS versions, MLB productions have finally put their WS films on DVD. As al ifelong Dodger fan I wish they had also included the 1955 WS. Also why haven't they made all of the other MLB team Series available. Still need the Mets, Tigers, Braves and Indians I think. But the quality is still there on the new DVDs ans having them all in one package is great for a baseball lover like me. Also think MLB productions should put out more box sets of famous series like the 88 or 91 or maybe a playoff package like the 86 playoffs or the the 2003. Anyway if you love baseball like me you should pick these up

5 out of 5 stars You can sell those tapes now........2006-07-28

Over the years, I bought all those World Series videos for the Dodgers that now go for $50-$100 apiece on auctions, Amazon and elsewhere. Now they are all available in all their glory on this two-disc DVD set.

No special music or extras here (which would be welcome), just the tapes transfered to DVD with narration by Vin Scully throughout except for the 1988 Series narrated by Bob Costas (complete with the puns but without the Gatorade drenching he got after the game where he said the Dodgers had the worst team in Series history on the field).

Since I have the original tapes, I was able to make a direct A-B comparison with the DVD set and the quality is very simalar. No disappointments here but remember the old shows done in the late 50's and early 60's aren't up to par technologically with the later shows. Still it's a welcome set to those who have been searching for those VHS tapes of Dodger World Series Championships.
