Christopher Guest, the man behind Waiting for Guffman, turns his comic eye on another little world that takes itself a bit too seriously: the world of competitive dog shows. Best in Show follows a clutch of dog owners as they prepare and preen their dogs to win a national competition. They include the yuppie pair (Parker Posey and Michael Hitchcock) who fear they've traumatized their Weimaraner by having sex in front of him; a suburban husband and wife (Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara) with a terrier and a long history of previous lovers on the wife's part; the Southern owner of a bloodhound (Guest himself) with aspirations as a ventriloquist; and many more. Following the same "mockumentary" format of Spinal Tap and Guffman, Best in Show takes in some of the dog show officials, the manager of a nearby hotel that allows dogs to stay there, and the commentators of the competition (a particularly knockout comic turn by Fred Willard as an oafish announcer). The movie manages to paint an affectionate portrait of its quirky characters without ever losing sight of the ridiculousness of their obsessive world. Almost all of the scenes were created through improvisation. While lacking the overall focus of a written script, Best in Show captures hilarious and absurd aspects of human behavior that could never be written down. The movie's success is a testament to both the talent of the actors and Guest's discerning eye. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Christopher Guest's Take On Dog Shows.......2007-09-07

Best In Show features Christopher Guest's group of misfits reuniting for another go around. This time, they're spoofing dog shows, and they a pretty good job of it too.

It's dog shows, dog shows, dog shows, and the twisted owners that put these dogs through this hassle. One of the better comedies of the decade.

Featuring a commentary from Christopher Guest and Eugene Levy, the DVD is one to have. A few featurettes and additional scenes round out this wonderful release.

Definitely recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Truly a Funny Movie.......2007-08-12

This is a really fun movie and funny too. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Best in Show.......2007-07-18

Hilarious vignettes of various colorful dog show entrants and their pooches add up to one of the top comedies of the past ten years. Guest's send-up of various American types include a Southern rube and a gay couple, but the laughter is never mean-spirited. Willard's side-splitting turn as a clueless broadcast announcer is truly for the ages.

5 out of 5 stars Jennifer Coolidge steals the show!.......2007-07-18

Many prefer "Waiting for Guffman," but this is the one I could watch over and over again. Just the sequences with Jennifer Coolidge alone are worth seeing this DVD for. Guest's character is a little annoying, but other than that, this one is a gem.

5 out of 5 stars Something for everyone, even if you have two left feet........2007-07-13

A friend suggested this movie for me to watch on a long plane flight. What he didn't tell me was that the amount of laughter that I would generate would annoy the other passengers! If you love comedies this is for you, if you love animals, this is for you, if you want to kick back and have a good belly laugh, this is for you. The characters in this movie are hilarious and you could identify somewhat with them. Briefly, the film centers around people showing their dogs at a rather prestigious dog show and what happens is hysterical.

4 out of 5 stars More please.......2007-02-11

This was what I was looking for. A taste of what the show was and an opportunity to enjoy some of the best episodes. I only wish that the whole thing was available. The interviews and extras are not quite what they could have been but the disc satisfies anyway. Some of the material is dated and it doesn't matter. The 2nd volume is more of the same. I acquired both and have enjoyed them over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Very happy........2007-01-17

These shows were so refreshing. So open and so funny. I will continue to look for more like these and the like.

3 out of 5 stars Rowan & Martin's RIP OFF.......2007-01-12

Actually Rhino's RIP OFF... The 6 episodes on here are gems, and the cast interviews are wonderful BUT where are the other episodes? Why aren't there at least a dozen episodes on this compilation?? Rhino needs to make up for this by offering a volume 3 with a lot more episodes on it. I feel short changed.

5 out of 5 stars blast from the past .......2006-11-03

a wonderful step back. It's sock it to me time.

3 out of 5 stars What we have here is NOT MUCH.......2006-09-03

In the late 1960's, Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In was an entertainment of sight gags, skits and one liners. It was Vaudville, Burlesque and low brow humor combined in an hour of TV

This DVD of six episodes fully takes in what the show had to offer. You could call this DVD A taste of Laugh-In. It captures in a nutshell what Laugh-in was.

You will note, in the late 80's, NBC (the same network that Laugh-In was on) came up with Saturday Night Live. It took up Laugh-In mantle without the joke wall or the quick SOCK IT TO ME!

However, This small piece of the show on DVD isnt much, we need more! I rate it low, because it feels so incomplete...and for what it worth, it better to have NOTHING than a small taste of greatness

I would rather have a full season of Laugh-in. Since Rhino isnt making many DVDs lately...someone should!

A Mighty Wind
There's A Mighty Wind a-blowin', along with the gales of laughter you'll get from Christopher Guest's third exercise in brilliant "mockumentary." After tackling small-town theatricals in Waiting for Guffman and obsessive dog-show contestants in Best in Show, Guest and his reliable stable of repertory players (including Fred Willard, Parker Posey, and Bob Balaban) apply their improvisational genius to a latter-day reunion of fictional '60s-era folk singers, a comedic goldmine that Guest first explored 30 years earlier on The National Lampoon Radio Hour. Collaborating with costar and cowriter Eugene Levy (who gives the film's funniest performance), Guest is so delicate in his satirical approach that the laughs aren't always obvious, and the subtlety can be as wistful (as in Catherine O'Hara's performance as Levy's auto-harpist partner) as it is hilarious. Some may wish for more blatant comedy, but that would compromise the genuine affection that Guest & Co. have for the music they're spoofing. --Jeff Shannon

Best in Show
Christopher Guest, the man behind Waiting for Guffman, turns his comic eye on another little world that takes itself a bit too seriously: the world of competitive dog shows.

Waiting for Guffman
One of the funniest films in many a moon was hiding at art house theaters in 1998. Former Saturday Night Live comedian and Spinal Tap member Christopher Guest creates the ultimate parody of small-town dramatics, Waiting for Guffman. Corky St. Claire (Guest), an overwhelming drama director hiding out in Blaine, Missouri, thinks he has found the vehicle to put him back on Broadway: the city's 150th anniversary play, Red, White, and Blaine. As rehearsals start, we learn of the town's history ("the stool capital of the world") including a brush with a UFO. The mockumentary follows the various townsfolk wishing for stardom: Parker Posey as a Dairy Queen clerk, Catherine O'Hara and Fred Willard as stage-struck travel agents, Matthew Keeslar as the town's bad boy, and Eugene Levy (who cowrote the film with Guest) as a dentist who dreams of glory on the stage. The film is a hoot from beginning to end, and be sure to watch the closing credits. Fans of Guest's deft dry humor should not miss his other parody of the entertainment world, The Big Picture (Kevin Bacon as a student filmmaker who goes to Hollywood). --Doug Thomas

Description

A MIGHTY WIND: Documentary-style Comedy. Christopher Guest follows up his acclaimed ensemble comedies Best in Show and Waiting for Guffman with a docu-comedy about three folk groups from the 60s who reunite for a memorial concert in New York City following the death of a legendary folk manager. BEST IN SHOW: The tension is palpable, the excitement is mounting and the heady scent of competition is in the air as hundreds of eager contestants from across America prepare to take part in what is undoubtedly one of the greatest events of their lives -- the Mayflower Dog Show. WAITING FOR GUFFMAN: A town of Blaine, Missouri is preparing for celebrations of its 150th anniversary. Corky St.Clair, an off-off-off-off-off-Broadway director is putting together an amateur theater show about the town's history, starring a local dentist, a couple of travel agents, a Dairy Queen waitress, and a car repairman. He invites a Broadway theater critic Mr. Guffman to see the opening night of the show

5 out of 5 stars You either love it or hate it----and I love it.......2007-01-03

I admit to an unexplained fondness for clever parody and satire. These three films by Christopher Guest fall right into my slot. Each highlights a different form of unwarranted self-importance, but rarely crosses the line of easy insults or demeaning caricature. The realism is ----well, very real (although it doesn't go to 11 as in an earlier semi-related film).

All the characters are clearly drawn from real life. Although employing many of the same actors in diverse roles, the films allow each individual improv performer to shine a unique light that fully illuminates the target subjects. My two 20-ish daugthers and I often quote from these films. The biting wit is timeless. Outstanding talent, craftsmanship, and creativity forms the heart of all these stories. Very, very funny stuff.

5 out of 5 stars i've talked about brittish comedy at its best but now here's american comedy at its best.......2006-08-18

great and hillarious!!! a mighty wind, best in show, waiting for guffman...i have watched theses movies countless times and it still shockes me how funny and side splitting these perfectly hillarious movies are!!!

a must get for everyone out there!!!

4 out of 5 stars great films, poor packaging.......2005-02-04

The DVDs are great. They have lots of great extras, including commentary on additional scenes, insightful commentary in general, cast bios, etc. I was disappointed in the packaging -- flimsy cardboard and are smaller than more traditional packages.

I received these as a gift, and I think that as a gift, they are great.

I have watched these films over and over again and enjoy them each time. The acting is incredible and it amazes me that it's improvised -- the actors make it look so easy, which means it must be difficult! In A Mighty Wind, all the actors sing and play their own instruments, with some learning just for this film. Great dedication to their artform.

5 out of 5 stars Three great movies, but what's so special about the price?.......2004-01-12

I'm tempted to dock one star mainly because you'd actually pay LESS buying them separately than in this "special" package. ($14.99 each for Waiting for Guffman and Best in Show, $23.76 for Mighty Wind = $53.74). The three-fer costs over $55. What gives? Well, I suppose you save something on shipping.

Regardless, these three films are easily worth the money at either price.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic Movies, Terrible Presentation.......2004-01-09

Boo, Warner Brothers!!!

You've taken three amazing movies and packaged them terribly.

I was extremely excited to have received this "box set" for Christmas, until I unwrapped it. It's three seperate loose DVDs with no box to tie them all together. And to add insult to injury, all of the DVDs are encased in the old-school type packaging with the cheap cardboard cover and black "snap" latch.

Very disappointing. Warner Brothers SUCKS! They really need to work on how they showcase their work on DVD in the future. They could take a real hint from New Line which always releases their best films with pride and flair.

As far as the movies go, they are amazing and packed with extras. It's just sad that they would call this a collection and not treat it as such.

5 out of 5 stars Just discovered this show!.......2007-03-14

Always heard of it, but was under the assumption (Bad me! Bad me!) that it was a corny old-folks show. How wrong I was! Luckily I found this at the library and am enjoying it for FREE, Rhino!!! Upon getting home with it and seeing the first DVD marked with 2 EPISODES I thought, this is peculiar, only 2 on a disc. What a let-down.
Anyway, as a little kid I loved watching the kids show The Electric Company in the late '70s, and that show is just like Laugh-In! Come to find out, Laugh-In was a pioneering show in many ways. This show is what happens when people are truly creative and do someting original, then get widely coppied. This show has some content and free attitudes that might not be aired today on prime time, now in this post-Janet-Jackson moral Dark Ages that lots of people find so "nice" and "safe." KIDS OF TODAY, CHECK THIS OUT AND SEE WHERE WE ARE AT NOW AS COMPARED TO THEN. I THINK IT CAN BE SEEN WE ARE IN MORE TROUBLE NOW THAN THEN.

5 out of 5 stars 5 for release, 3 for content. . .......2006-08-16

Finally, some of the groundbreaking, often side-splittingly funny ROWAN AND MARTIN'S LAUGH-IN episodes are out on DVD! The good news is that, along with the episodes, also included are interviews with Alan Sues, Dick Martin, Editor Extraordinaire Art Schneider, and other stuff. The bad news is that there are only SIX episodes on this THREE-DVD set! Boo! Hiss! The Flying Fickle Finger of Fate Award has to go to Rhino for being so chintzy with this set (just like with the first one) and at a fifty dollar price, too! (Get a good used copy.)

With more and more teevee series of lesser quality being brought out in box set form with complete seasons, where the heck are the LAUGH-IN sets? The series hardly ever gets a cable showing, so the only way we'll get to savor General Bull Right, Gladys Ormphby and Tyrone F. Horneigh, the Farkel Family (that's a fine-lookin' boy you got there, Frank), Judy Carne and Sock It To Me Time, Uncle Al the Kiddies' Pal (hello, little friends, hello!), Ernestine of Your Telephone Company (snort, snort!), Morgul the Friendly Drelb and so many more is to DEMAND a DVD release proper!

Come on, Rhino, we'll be happy to buy 'em--just do 'em right!
Puhleeeeeze?

Thank you. And now, back to our program. . .

5 out of 5 stars Laugh-in~ Funny.......2006-06-19

I love this DVD. It comes with 3 DVDs all funny and hilarious. I pop one of these into my DVD and let the cares of the day melt away. The jokes while sometimes corny and silly are timeless.

2 out of 5 stars Wishing for a real offer for Laugh In.......2005-08-11

I went all out and purchased, through television, the Rowan and Martin's laugh in, what a joke. First problem is that there is no order. And after awhile they stopped sending them. When i called they said they had not made anymore, and maybe some day they would. But so far, after a year, they never have. Then they put out the best of series. Which i admit, are not apart of the ones they had sent me in the beginning. But again, they leave you with so little and for so very much money!
Many libraries offer the Rowan and Martin's Laugh in Best of Sets and i suggest renting them out and watching them instead of purchasing them. I am really disgusted with the company and how they put these things out.
They should treat true fans a little better. I didn't watch too many of the original shows when they were on television as i wasn't old enough. But i have watched some when i was a teenager when they were on in reruns and i simply fell in love, 10 years after they were over with. And i still am. Yes, some of the material is a bit dated, but even us 35 year olds still love it!
Put it out by season and i think you'll have a hit, keep up these shoddy practices of ripping us off for very little, and you won't have much other than bad reviews.

3 out of 5 stars The show is 5 stars, but the dvd..........2005-07-28

Is only 3. Because it's just a few episodes. I will not buy Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In unless they box the entire series.

I want to see it all again!

This movie shows how you can over come difficult lives in a very unique way. It shows the hardship of prison life yet how something very different can be added that brought hope. The dogs were very well trained. Great movie to show how people can change through love.

1 out of 5 stars Not In Concert.......2006-11-24

This is a cheap compilation of excerpts from Rosie's TV show and not a concert performance as the title suggests. The video and sound quality is average and the selection of songs is uneven. She lip-syncs to Nelson Riddle's fine arrangements while fiddling with props on a sterile, cartoonish set that looks like a children's show. In many sequences, she is pregnant and hiding behind windows and giant bows. Also released as "Rosemary Clooney Singing at Her Best." For hardcore fans only who may enjoy the extra interview with Edward R. Murrow.
