5 out of 5 stars You will love it!.......2007-09-09

Even when I am completely wiped out in the evening I can fit in one of these sets. Then I usually find I don't want to stop. Just last night I was too tired to think of working out, and then was just going to do a few minutes of some warm ups but, as usual with an Ana & Ravi workout, I just wanted to keep going! I did the tune in, warm ups, inflammation and immune sets, relaxation (probably the best lead relaxation I have ever experienced or maybe I was just so ready for it :) and then I did a brief meditation So, about 45 min. later, I was done! It was the first time I had done either the inflammation or immune system sets before, and I really enjoyed them. You will love the BOF through the left nostril only! I could feel it relaxing, energizing and healing me all at the same time.

5 out of 5 stars HIGH EXPECTATIONS WERE MET!.......2007-08-26

I purchased Kundalini Yoga for Beginners & Beyond back in Dec. 06 and was immediately hooked on this style of Yoga. If you have never tried this yoga I recommend you get one of Ana & Ravis programs. You will feel a difference in the first few minutes guaranteed and chance are you will be hooked too. I have since purchased more Kundlaini Yoga DVDs and was really looking forward to these new ones. These are quickly becoming my most used DVDs for the way you can do a short or long workout and focus on one area you like.

The Quick Fix DVD is for now problems, Yoga House Call is preventative. I really like the Move Your Energy- Move your Life, the Kundalini Yoga Superset, the Energy Warm-ups and the Flexibility practices which are very athletic while supplying that "yoga buzz"this type of yoga is known for. I enjoy both of these DVD's and I am sure I haven't discovered yet all they have to offer.

5 out of 5 stars Great Yoga.......2007-08-26

I felt like yesterday was my birthday!!! When I looked in the mailbox my two new Ravi & /Ana's had arrived! I did about 50 minutes of Yoga Quick Fixes in the afternoon and then 45 minutes of Dr. Yoga House Call at night. There are pre-sets, quick sets, sets for all kinds of everyday ailments. I just put the DVD on to play from the beginning ignoring the menu options and had a great adventure! Both the DVDs are enormously fun in the usual Ravi & Ana way. The music is very cool and very pretty at the same time. I plan to try the rest today. There is so much to do. I am sure I will enjoy using these for a long long time!

PS: I scanned the relaxations on both and felt so relaxed just sitting there listening to them - I am so looking forward to trying them (and the meditations) when the kids are out of the way!

5 out of 5 stars What more do you need?.......2007-08-26

I wondered at first if these two new ones were different enough that I should get them both and went ahead and ordered both anyway. First, you will like both of them - they are different enough, and I LOVE both!
I have listed the chapters since they are not fully listed in the description:

YOGA HOUSE CALL

Energy Warm Ups 14 min.

DR. YOGA REMEDY OPTIONS:

Fertility & Potency 11 min.
Bye Bye Back Pain 11 min.
Strong Bones & Muscle Tone 13 min.
Anti Arthritis 9 min.
Heart Helper 12 min.
Breast Cancer Prevention 4 min.
Immune Invigorator 7 min.
Brain Booster 13 min.
Eagle Eyes 10 min.
Inflamation Relief 6 min.

DR.YOGA QUICK SETS:

Move Your Energy Move Your Life 10 min.
Flexible & Free 16 min.
Strong As Steel 16 min.

You will probably want to do the warmups with the remedy options but the pre-sets are complete little sets on their own. Have fun! Ana & Ravi have become my favorite all time instructors. I don't feel right if I don't get at least a little dose of them everyday and these DVD's are just perfect for when time is pressing or for when, of course, I need a remedy! You can pretty much tailor your workout everyday to your needs. These new DVDs are perfect!

5 out of 5 stars Add 5 more stars to this one*****.......2007-08-26

I just finished another set from Yoga House Calls. I did The Tune In, Energy Warm Ups, Health & Happiness Quick Set and Closing Prayer. Took about 35 min. total. Nice set! like all the ones I have tried. Their is no matrix but I, for one, am so glad since I had a DVD with a matrix and ended up never using it. I got so frustrated trying to figure it out! There are endless options here. Some are more challenging, some more relaxing. All are fun and as usual in Ana & Ravi fashion easy to follow with first rate instruction. The music is even better than their last DVD's which I did not think was possible.
PS: My mom is using the arthritis set and it has not oly helped her range of motion but her whole mood is brightened. Everything we have tried works!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, wonderful........2007-06-20

Roger Ebert once commented that Michael Caine never gives a bad performance. Neither does Gene Hackman and neither does Walter Matthau. This is one of his best. Medical humor always seems to work. Here it soars, with the help of Glenda Jackson, Richard Benjamin, and--in one of his most hilarious roles--Art Carney. The subplots are also well done. There's even a brief appearance by Matthau's real-life son.

This is the sort of movie you can watch again and again and the underlying story is sweet and loving, not cruel like The Odd Couple or long in the tooth like Grumpy Old Men. This is Matthau at the top of his rumpled powers, playing a skilled surgeon with notable human failings ripe for redemption.

5 out of 5 stars Clean Romantic Comedy.......2007-01-10

Very enjoyable movie that we watch over and over. Nice music. From this movie we purchased the CD Moonlight Gambler/ Frankie Laine. We also purchased the Movie Hop Scotch on Dec 28 and have not received it as yet.

4 out of 5 stars Light Tracy-Hepburn-Style Romp Takes Well-Aimed Jabs at Greedy Doctors.......2006-08-10

I remember seeing this 1978 comedy at one of the bargain matinees I took in when I was looking for a study break from my college courses. Walter Matthau and Glenda Jackson do some effective Tracy-Hepburn-style thrusting-and-parrying in this featherweight romp directed by the reliable Howard Zieff (he did "Private Benjamin") about a newly widowed doctor's aggressive re-entry into the dating game. It all breezes by quickly primarily thanks to the clever script by veteran screenwriter Julius J. Epstein ("Casablanca") along with Alan Mandel, Max Shulman and future director Charles Shyer.

Dr. Charley Nichols has just come back from Hawaii after his wife's death. Upon his return, he becomes aware that he is instant catnip to any and all the single women in LA. He works in a hospital run by an increasingly senile chief-of-staff, Amos Willoughby, whom Charley has to pacify to keep his residency. Enter Ann Atkinson, a transplanted Englishwoman who bakes cheesecakes for a living and has certain concrete opinions about the medical profession, which she expresses freely on a PBS talk show. Of course, Charley is on the show's discussion panel, and sparks, as they say, fly. This leads to the standard complications about how serious Charley is willing to become about Ann. At the same time, the hospital has to deal with a potential wrongful death lawsuit from the widow of a rich baseball team owner who died at the hospital under Willoughby's careless supervision.

It's just refreshing to see such a mature yet bracing love story between two characters inhabited by actors who deliver lines with the scalpel-wielding skill of surgeons. Matthau is his usual 1970's curmudgeonly swinger and quite a sight waddling with his gangly arms held akimbo in his power walk. Away from her heavy, award-winning Elizabethan roles, Jackson is crisply sardonic and charmingly vulnerable as the feisty Ann, who thinks all doctors should aspire to be Albert Schweitzer. Art Carney plays Willoughby with predictable bluster, while Richard Benjamin provides amiable support as Charley's colleague, Dr. Solomon. It's all very compact with a few nice jabs at the greed within the medical profession. There are no extras on the 2005 DVD.

4 out of 5 stars Lighter Than Air, and What's Wrong With That?.......2005-12-20

In a career that featured a wealth of great comic performances, Walter Matthau gave few that were more delightful and relaxed than this one. In contrast to the wonderfully over-the-top style he displayed while winning an Oscar for "The Fortune Cookie" and being nominated for another in "The Sunshine Boys," Matthau employed a lighter but equally effective comic touch for this 1978 romantic comedy. He plays a widowed doctor who is over his grief and ready to sow some wild oats, only to find that he's fallen for a woman who wants nothing to do with his playboy ways. Glenda Jackson, who later left acting to join the British parliament, is a perfect match for Matthau's game, and the two trade barbs beautifully in a film that plays so leisurely that it's over before you know it. Look for superb supporting performances from Richard Benjamin as well as Art Carney as the dottering and caustic hospital administrator. He hams it up wonderfully in a part far removed from the nice guy he played in "The Honeymooners." This is one of those movies that looks like it was fun to make. It's definitely fun to watch.

5 out of 5 stars House Calls.......2005-09-07

Delightful romantic comedy benefits from a top-notch script (by Max Shulman and Julius Epstein-co-writer of "Casablanca"!), and the unexpected chemistry between lovable schlump Matthau and starchy Jackson, who are both fabulous. Affirming once again that true love will triumph over casual sex, "Calls" is a charming, clever romance, with plenty of laughs and heart. Matthau fans should flock to this.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Film Noir Boxed Set.......2007-03-28

I have watched about half of these movies & so far all of them have been very good, in fact, much better than I expected. I find Dana Andrews to be a very compelling leading man & the actresses in all of these are superb as well. I hope Fox will resolve their issues with "Boomerang" which is #16 in the set, (which is not included with your purchase) so that I can add this one to the collection. My only complaint is that this collection is not really a boxed set. It is simply 17 great film noir DVD's shrink-wrapped together. However, this is a great value & lots of these titles are being released for the first time in this set. Highly recommended for those who like the genre.

4 out of 5 stars remember...no 16 Boomerang is still missing.......2007-03-18

This set misses out no.16 "Boomerang". It got recalled at the eleventh hour by Fox because of a legal tangle.
You can find it on sale for $45.00 on amazon marketplace, because it was actually printed and ready to go.
Clearly a few boxes have found their way out the back door!!!!
But despite that wee dissapointment you'll love the rest.
Hopefully Fox will sort out the mess soon..... and then you can plug the gap without having to shell out silly money.

3 out of 5 stars better price (than list) to start your collection, but not the best deal on noir.......2007-03-12

I haven't yet purchased these titles & was just about to, until I checked up on what's included with the current bundle (March 1 2007) that Amazon is offering. As previously mentioned, this is not a box set (misleading description from Amazon), but rather a bundle of the first 17 titles in Fox's noir series. I purchased the Warner Bros.' boxes 1-3 (and reviewed them there) which I thought were an excellent value for the money (when on sale, roughly 6 - 7$ per disc). I've held off on these since the price is higher. This bundle discounts the titles to about $8 per disc, which is better than the usual price for each, but a local retailer often sells these titles for 7.50 - 10.00 (with a buy 3 get 1 free sale). Still I would have jumped on this price had this been a bonafide box set with the slimmer DVD cases, but these regular dvd's will take up quite a bit of real estate in my storage. Moreover, the more recent titles aren't included (missing titles: Boomerang, 14 Hours, Shock, Vicki, all released last year). If Fox would release all the titles to date (plus the next releases: Hangover Square & The Lodger) in slim cases & a box at a comparable price I'll jump, otherwise I'm holding out for a better deal.

3 out of 5 stars Don't Forget This One Too................2006-03-05

For some reason the Fox Noir release Dark Corner (Mark Stevens, Lucille Ball, Clifton Webb, William Bendix) doesn't get much coverage under the typical outlets for obtaining these Fox Noir titles, Amazon included. I didn't even know the title was even out there, but it is, and it is quite a Noir gem. I say this without hesitation because I was never a Lucy fan at all. But in this one, she's actually pretty cool. Too bad she went goofy in later life (I guess it paid the bills).
If you like the Fox Noir series and Noir in general, don't forget this one too. I got mine from Tower Records (seems hard to find for some reason). The famous "peering through the venetian blinds" scene that you see stills of all the time, that's Mark Stevens. A somewhat overlooked actor in Noir circuit, but he can hold up to any of the other more noted ones in my opinion. Check it out.

5 out of 5 stars An indispensable series for aficionados of film noir.......2006-01-10

The Fox film noir collection is an "Amazon.com exclusive" consisting of 9 DVDS in their individual cases (alas including individual shrink wrap, which one tediously has to remove) presented in one blister pack. The nine titles are:
*** BATCH 1 (DVDs released 3/05): Call Northside 777 (1948); Laura (1944); Panic in the streets (1950)
*** BATCH 2 (DVDs released 6/05): House of bamboo (1955); Nightmare alley (1947); Street with no name (1948)
*** BATCH 3 (DVDs released 9/05): House on 92nd Street (1945); Somewhere in the night (1946); Whirlpool (1949)

The film restorations are superbly done. The DVD cases are in uniform format, being part of the "Fox film noir" series. Each title has a film commentary (Laura has two) plus other extras, minimally a trailer. In addition, each title has a 4-page booklet with these sections: "the lineup," "the look," "the scoop," "the story," and "scene selection."

The DVDs list for $14.95 each and currently Amazon sells them for around $10 each. Amazon sells the 9-DVD collection for $74.99, which works out to $8.33 for each DVD. Certainly, not all titles are of the caliber of Laura (1944), but this collection is a must-have for the firm-noir aficionado.

Incidentally, BATCH 4, was released 12/05 and consists of: The dark corner (1946); Kiss of death (1947); Where the sidewalk ends (1950). BATCH 5 will be released in 3/06: Fallen angel (1945); House on Telegraph Hill (1951); No way out (1950)

Alain Silver & Elizabeth Ward's "Film noir: An encyclopedic reference to the American style" (1992, 3rd ed.) lists 32 noir titles by Fox. Hence we can probably expect from Fox another 20 or so titles in the "Fox film noir" series. If these 32ish titles all materialize in this excellent series, it will be a big chunk both out of one's purse and DVD shelf space.

Description

"LovecraCked! The Movie", the debut feature film from BiFF JUGGERNAUT Productions, is a horror/comedy anthology, inspired in part by influential author H.P. Lovecraft ("Re-Animator"). Following in the tradition of George A. Romero's "Creepshow" and "Tales From The Crypt", the film is an international collaboration of directors from the USA, UK and Sweden, combining over-the-top comedy à la "Monty Python" with bone-chilling horror, to have you clutching your gut one moment and cringing the next.

Plot Synopsis: With tongue planted firmly in cheek, our story follows the exploits of a bumbling investigative journalist as he struggles to discover the truth behind the enigmatic Lovecraft and his mysterious past. Along the way strange and macabre tales play out, pulling the reporter ever deeper into the mystical world of the author. Will the journalist finally prevail or will he end up without a clue as usual? One thing's for sure: the truth is out there... he's just not entirely sure where.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Different Venue for Horror Spoof.......2007-07-30

Presented as an anthology of stories loosely tied together through vignettes featuring an investigative reporter researching the life and writings of horror/fantasy author H. P. Lovecraft, LOVECRACKED! THE MOVIEis sometimes amusing, but often is too hard to follow or falls flat. There are some truly brilliant, wacky pieces throughout the movie, but not enough of them.

I'd tried to watch the movie twice before I finally got through it on the third attempt. Earlier, I figured the problem was me. I was distracted, too tired from work to concentrate, or really in the mood for something that was easy to get into. But I had the same problems the third time through. The movie is so disjointed in places that it's almost like channel-surfing captured on DVD, although the stories all have to do with some aspect of Lovecraft, his work, or his Cthulhu Mythos so as not to be completely disjointed.

The stories featured on the DVD only pay passing homage to Lovecraft's work. Key pieces and conceits were borrowed or cannibalized but the new stories didn't really push into the deep thinking that lay behind those tales. Even though the movie is about Lovecraft, we don't really get to know the author. There's just not enough factual material in the presentation for someone unfamiliar with Lovecraft's fiction to get the paradigm behind the pieces. There was no discussion as to why the writers, actors, and directors show the path they took to create their films.

The parts of the movie that really work are the ones that are over-the-top. I loved the investigative reporter shtick and would often laugh out loud at the actor's antics. He had some really good stuff, and he was great with his expressions and dialogue delivery. He has a good sense of timing.

But there were several stories within the movie that just never connected, not with the rest of the movie and not with the audience. I often found myself scratching my head and wondering what it was I had just seen. Or why I was supposed to care.

Case in point was a story about the guy whose ex-lover sent him a marriage announcement. He grew angry with her and obsessed over what she was doing with her fiancé. So, somehow, he mutated into a Bugboy. He entered a cocoon and managed to metamorphose at the same time she happened to come by to check on him because she was worried about him. This section is shot in black and white, which is effective, but the prosthetic makeup is a complete joke. Plus you don't really care about any of the characters.

Many of Lovecraft's own stories were hard to understand, contained characters the reader could not identify with, and didn't have real endings. Maybe this was a pastiche representing those kinds of stories. Unfortunately, I can't confidently reach that decision based on my viewing.

A lot of people really liked Shaun of the Dead. I didn't. I felt that movie had some highlights that were worth watching, but that it missed the boat on delivering a solid film experience. So maybe it's just me. Maybe the audience that enjoyed that film will enjoy LovecraCked! The Movie. It's watchable but just so very uneven that I believe it will depend on the individual as to whether or not it's enjoyable. But it's worth looking at to find out for yourself.

A great video for watching what "the life" was like in the 50's era. A nicely done movie.

James Spader looks like the hardest-working man in show business as the busy, comic-romantic lead in this enjoyable "film blanc" (a tongue-in-cheek phrase coined by film critic Andrew Sarris to describe that genre of movies featuring ghosts in love). Spader plays Stevenson Lowe, heir to a highly respected publishing firm that has recently been purchased by a giant media corporation. Though Stevenson has deluded himself into believing the new owners will allow him to maintain creative control over his family's book line, he soon discovers the unpleasant truth. A ludicrous executive (funny work by Buck Henry) is pushing no-brainer tomes about cats and the female fat cell into the spring list, pushing poor Stevenson into the margins of his own company.

His helplessness has a way of resonating with other mushy areas of his life. Having purchased an expensive townhouse for himself alone, Stevenson severely disappoints his long-suffering girlfriend (Polly Walker in a rare comic outing), who thought they were going to get married. The hero's dithering on this sore subject gets more complicated when he discovers a pair of Jazz Age ghosts (Michael Caine and Maggie Smith) occupying his new home and dispensing unwanted advice about love. Directed by Peter Yates (Breaking Away), Curtain Call has a low-key charm kept alive by the considerable skills of its admirable cast (including Sam Shepard, Marcia Gay Harden, and Frank Whaley), while a handful of memorable, screwball scenes deliver solid sight gags. Not a masterpiece, but a real treat. --Tom Keogh

Description

Get into the spirit with real romance. Stevenson Lowe's girlfriend, Julia, wants to get married. But all thoughts of proposing are quickly scared out of him by a couple of grouchy ghosts who have the marriage from hell. They are Max and Lily Gale, theatrical legends, and the original residents of his newly purchased brownstone. They have no intention of leaving to make room for this new couple. When Julia decides she's waited long enough for a proposal, she leaves Stevenson and his crazy ghost stories behind. Will his afterlife houseguests be able to reunite our young lovers? True love gets a spirited test in this charming, offbeat romantic comedy starring James Spader (Stargate) and Academy Award-winners Michael Caine (Hannah and Her Sisters) and Maggie Smith (The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie).

5 out of 5 stars Classic Comedy.......2006-12-07

This film is absolutely delightful - in a nice, old-fashioned way. Which means there's a real plot with real characters. Not the norm nowadays.
The cast is a dream. Caine and Smith are simply wonderful together and Spader gives a brilliant performance as a comedian - one has to think of his later work in "Boston Legal". The supporting cast is also very good. Polly Walker seems a little pale and uninteresting, but that can be easily overlooked.
And this film is more than just a love-story (or even a ghost-story): it's a film about books. The sub-plot features the hero's struggle to run a publishing house that refuses to publish low-quality books. His reactions on some of the "best-selling" titles alone are worth watching the film.
All in all a funny, witty and romantic film - recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Curtain Calls.......2005-09-17

James Spader in a refreshing light-hearted comedy??
Without nudity and lots of sex?? Is it any good?? YES!!
I was overly pleased with Spader's antics. I had no idea he was good with anything physical above the eyebrows (graymatter). And these supporting actors are without equal. It's a sweet, fun script that flies by which you'll have to watch again - and show it to friends.

4 out of 5 stars Whimsical but well done fable !.......2004-12-22

Peter Yates `s career has had too much peaks and some lows . From his famous thriller Bullit in the far sixties to the Dresser ( his masterpiece to my mind) . His concerns have always turned around the inner dragons hidden in the intimacy of the most of the human beings .
In this time he recreates a funny situation in which New York ` s dressy guy will be haunted for two old specters in the New Year `s 1927 . Obviously he will be the one who watches them . Since the plot has many intersections with previous films , the masterful hand of Yates and this splendid cast gets to lead this film to a happy land .
Michael Caine , Maggie Smith , Marcia Gay Harden and James Spader and my dear reader as you well know I have not seen any film accepted by Mr. Caine fairly mediocre . So considering all the cards in your hand , how can you lose with this clever and easy going picture ?

3 out of 5 stars Great Cast, Mediocre Film.......2004-04-15

I wanted so much to love this film. Maggie Smith & Michael Caine together again (first time: "California Suite")was a big reason I sought this one out. The story idea is pleasasnt enough, but too often the scenes seem to just ramble on. There are bright spots, usually when Smith and Caine are around. The dialogue needed much more sparkle to make this film more memorable. A bit of better editing might have also improved the whole piece. An enjoyable, but rather disappointing experience.

4 out of 5 stars Beetlejuice it isn't but still funny in a sophisticated way.......2001-08-18

I have watched this movie many times. Michael Caine and Maggie Smith are wonderful, I wish they would do another one like the Topper series. James Spader is great also, sort of Cary Grant similar. I don't remeber Polly Walker very well, the weak link? You also get Buck Henry and Sam Shepard! The music is wonderful also, very beautiful movie. I am delighted with many small production company movies, Kill the Man was a strained comedy but at least it was a true comedy instead of some of the movies big production companies try to pass off as comedies.
