Winner of the Palme d'Or at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival, this gripping drama by Ken Loach (Raining Stones) is set during the early days of the Irish Republican Army, when British occupation of the Irish radicalized many a citizen and caused some to take up arms. Cillian Murphy plays Damien, a medical student on his way to London when he witnesses a couple of atrocities committed by British troops. Instead of becoming a doctor, he turns into a leading and respected figure in an IRA division led by his brother, Teddy (Padraic Delaney). The film provides some fascinating historical insight into the nascent resistance movement as it was in 1920, and Loach brilliantly conveys the profound emotional transition young men had to make to become saboteurs and killers. Loach's realistic style is absolutely mesmerizing, with many scenes built around the dynamics of large groups: contentious meetings, torture sessions, battles, celebrations, and the like. One has the sense of history as a pool of energy, and one also develops a kind of Renoiresque appreciation for the fact that different people on opposing sides of a life-or-death issue have their reasons for believing what they believe. As the story moves along, subtle shifts in the perspectives of men and women who had once agreed to be absolute in their fight for freedom results in a tragic yet understandable schism among Irish patriots. The final half-hour of The Wind That Shakes the Barley says a lot about how the Irish, including people who had known one another all their lives, turned their wrath on one another for so many decades. This is an outstanding film, featuring the best performance yet by Murphy (Red Eye). --Tom Keogh
Description
Driven by a deep sense of duty and a love for his country, Damien (Cillian Murphy) abandons his burgeoning career as a doctor and joins his brother, Teddy in a dangerous and violent fight for freedom. As the Irish freedom fighters bold tactics bring the British to a breaking point, both sides finally agree to a treaty to end the bloodshed. But, despite the apparent victory, civil war erupts and families who fought side by side, find themselves pitted against one another, putting their loyalties to the ultimate test.

A Powerful movie.......2007-09-08
A story description has been written about this movie. I just wanted to add my 2 cents. This movie was recommended to me by an Irish lady while touring Scotland and Ireland. I have waited almost 2 years for it to show up here in the USA. A powerful and strong story of the fight for freedom in Ireland not unlike our own fight for freedom. The landscapes are beautiful and the characters ring true.
Disappointing but Admirable Effort.......2007-09-08
I looked forward to this film as I do to any that attempts to shed light on the struggle of the Irish for freedom from England. The movie is beautiful cinematically and the acting very convincing, although I did think Cillian Murphy somewhat miscast as Damien, the young doctor who is reluctantly converted to the IRA cause by the British brutality he witnesses. However, overall I found the movie disappointing for somewhat the same reasons as reviewer Pouliot. If the viewer does not have a pretty good background in Irish history, especially of the 1910-1922 years, he is likely to have difficulty understanding what is going on and why. The film is narrowed so sharply to one small group of guerilla fighters in Cork County that I don't know how an average viewer could put the action in perspective with the 1916 Easter rebellion, the nationwide struggle going on, the direction and control being exercised by IRA leaders in Dublin and the overall scope of the fight against the British. The biggest plus of this film, to my mind, and it is a very big plus, is that it shows graphically the kind of savagery being engaged in by the British soldiers (the "black and tans" who were sent in to support the regular British forces in Ireland) and the galvanizing effect it had on the Irish populace. It also shows the tragedy that befell Ireland when the independence movement came apart after the Treaty was signed and the die-hard Republicans refused to support the new Irish Free State, feeling that it was a sell-out to accept anything but complete freedom for the whole island. The movie does a good job of showing how the two sides could differ so drastically and still each have legitimate reasons for taking the stance they did. It also drives home how devastating the Civil War was in the final wrenching scenes of what devotion to their beliefs cost the two brothers. This was certainly a singularly Irish story, as another reviewer said, and it leaves you feeling very melancholy to realize what their independence ultimately brought the Irish, i.e., families torn apart forever, scars much deeper than any the British left and a shadow that hangs over the land even today. A haunting if not fully satisfying film.
4.5 Stars. One of the best films of 2007 showing us the high price of freedom........2007-09-07
The Wind That Shakes the Barley is a beautiful looking film made in Ireland by director Ken Loach. It took home the Palme D'Or in 2006 at the Cannes Film Festival and deservedly so.
Loach tells a sympathetic and political tale of war and the birth of the I.R.A through two brothers Damien played by Cillian Murphy who is solid in pretty much every film I have seen him in and Teddy played by Padraic Delaney who equals Murphy's performance with a great one of his own. Damien a med school graduate headed to a London hospital to further his training decides against it after witnessing one to many atrocities on his people at the hands of the British Black and Tan soldiers and joins a guerrilla squad of the Irish Republican Army headed by his brother Teddy to fight and prevent such atrocities.
Above everything I found this to be a political film and doesn't go into the brothers relationship in any detail although there are some powerful and painful moments between them that could bring tears to your eyes. Also there facial expressions and looks in there eyes say a lot which can be attributed to powerful performances and great acting all around.
Even a love interest between Damien and a strong willed Sinead is still a backdrop for there political cause which they share an equally strong if not greater love for, there real passion in this film is the cause they fight for.
A truce is declared but with of course many unacceptable terms as seen by Damien. And seen as a victory and a stepping stone to greater things as seen by Teddy, which inevitably divides the Irish against there own people and brother against brother.
I rented this film from Netflix but will now be purchasing, It is a good add to any film collection at a fair price and highly recommended, this is one of the best of 2007 I have seen so far.
Thanks for reading.
Brutal but honest and necessary.......2007-08-17
anyone who ever said 'gee why do the irish hate the english people so much?' ought to see this film. to those who lived it - some of my relatives - the thuggish behavior by the black and tans and other british soldiers turned loose to "teach the irish a lesson" is a disgrace that's yet to be appreciated over here. it's a stain on british history that the english government treated a proud and free people like this - but then, they did the same to every colony didn't they? american patriots who are proud of OUR revolution against england would do well to watch this and appreciate the irish version of the same thing
Tragic Ireland.......2007-08-14
Set in Ireland in the early 1920's, this is the story of two brothers fighting for the cause of Irish independence. The IRA was a ragtag band of farm boys and local townsmen who, enraged by the appearance of the British Black and Tans in their country, decide that independence for Ireland is going to be a fight to the death. The British used cruel paramilitary tactics to try to suppress the rebellion, which did more to undermine their moral authority than anything else. The film depicts the futility of military tactics to subdue a people defending their own land. A political solution, though not a cure all, as we know from history, was the only answer.
Teddy O'Donnell unsuccessfully tries to draw his doctor brother Damien into the struggle. But Damien abandons his intention to take a job at a prestigious London hospital as he witnesses an act of violence on the platform of the train he's about to depart on. The brothers lead a band of guerillas harassing the British at every turn; exhausted by the fight, a Truce is finally declared by the British. But there's no redeeming end to this story for many years, as we all know. The Truce was the beginning of a fierce civil war, that has tragic consequences for the brothers and has had terrible consequences for Ireland for decades.
Shot on location, primarily in County Cork, the film doesn't romanticize the countryside or the people. The land is rainy and foggy and cloudy; the farms are poor. The interiors are cramped, smoky and dark. The film has a gritty, realistic quality, to match the grim story. The actors are all Irish, the dialogue often heavily accented and mumbled, occasionally mixed with Gaelic. This is a painful film to watch, but well-deserving of the awards it's received. The movie has excited comment in Britain for good reason--the British come off looking very bad. Nothing is spared in depicting British torture and murder; I covered my eyes a few times. There's no doubt that this is the Irish side of the story, but keeping that in mind, it's a great film and well worth your time.

This kinky love story features a standout performance by Maggie Gyllenhaal, an offbeat young actress in her first starring role. Gyllenhaal plays Lee, a nervous girl who compulsively cuts herself, who gets a job as a secretary for Edward, an imperious lawyer (James Spader, an old hand at tales of perverse affection). Edward's reprimands for typos and spelling errors begin with mild humiliation, but as Lee responds to his orders--which are driven as much by his own anxieties and fears as any sense of order--the punishments escalate to spankings, shackles, and more. Secretary walks a fine line. It finds sly humor in these sadomasochistic doings without turning them into a gag, and it takes Lee and Edward's mutual desires seriously without getting self-righteous or pompous. Certainly not a movie for everyone, but some people may be unexpectedly stirred up by this smart and steamy tale of repressed passion. --Bret Fetzer

Just something that caught my eye.
"The persons and events in this motion picture are ficticious. Any similarity to actual persons or events is unitentional."
That's either a delicious accident, or an equally delicious in-joke.
A sick dark comedy........2007-08-24
Secretary is a movie you will really like or really loathe. I am somewhere in the middle. The story of a girl who cuts herself and finds happiness in a sadomachism relationship with her pompous boss could turn most people off and I have to admit some of the scenes are pretty risque but Maggie Gyenhaal wins over the audience with her dark optimism and self-deprecting attitude. She falls in love with Edward played by James Spader, it's an unusual kind of love but it works for her, she is used to hurting herself and now she finds pleaure in Edward releasing that same pain on her. This movie is not for everyone but it is worth a viewing or two. Enjoy!
Reveals some truths about human nature..........2007-08-05
"Secretary" was my introduction to Maggie Gyllenhaal, and I have yet to see her in anything better. Who is this woman? I have a serious crush. I had no prior knowledge about the actress or the movie, so her transformation mid-movie into this striking, poised, turned-on woman -- wearing shackles as she conducts her secretarial business with a smile on her face -- was a completely unexpected pleasure. James Spader is right at home as the weird guy who turns out to be the perfect complement to this disturbed woman and the one person in her life who can bring out the best in her. Their interplay reveals some truths about human nature that maybe only the adventurous and honest among us would admit they recognize. S&M, per-se, certainly isn't everyone's cup of tea. Still, there's something insightful about the success of their particular relationship. I'd double-bill this with "The African Queen", or maybe a Tracy / Hepburn movie.
Must see movie for those with an odd sense of humor.......2007-07-28
I loved this movie from the start. The way a young woman feels at that age is portrayed brilliantly by Maggie. The sexual tension that builds throughout the movie is a turn on. This movie relives my fairytales at finding true love and lust as a young woman. Absolutley my favorite movie
Wonderful Cult Film.......2007-07-24
Wonderful movie. Some of our puritanical American viewers might get stuck on the sexual content and reject this film (probably out of a sense of their own sexual inadequacies). This movie goes much deeper than raw eroticism. It is a wonderful commentary on individuality and the psychology of individuality. This film celebrates the uniqueness of the individual human spirit. This film screams about acceptance and appreciation of oneself -- and to acknowledge and honor the normal and quirky traits we all possess. This movie is truly a great film. It will undoubtedly go down as an important cult classic -- I would argue on the same par as cult classics "The Graduate" and "Harold and Maude." The performances by Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Spader are first rate. These were likely too very difficult roles to pull off and they did it superbly.

Julia Ormond faced one of the great challenges of her career when she tried to re-create Audrey Hepburn's title role in the 1995 remake of 1954's Sabrina. Happily, Ormond performed admirably, and while she may not have the same gamine charm of Hepburn, she makes the role her own. In fact, her transformation from mousy girl to sophisticated young woman is actually more dramatic in this updated version. The basic plot is the same--chauffeur's daughter falls in love with the son of the rich household, only to be wooed away by the older brother for business purposes--but it has been entertainingly modernized: The head of the Larrabee household is the strong matriarch (Nancy Marchand); Sabrina goes to Paris to work with a photographer instead of going to cooking school (although that means the wonderful "new egg" scene of the original had to be ditched); David's (Greg Kinnear) character has been toned down and made more sympathetic; and Humphrey Bogart's revolutionary plastic has become the flattest TV screen ever made. Lauren Holly does a fine job playing Elizabeth Tyson, David's fiancée. If you watch this for its own worth--instead of comparing it to the original--this will prove to be a terrific lighthearted romantic comedy. --Jenny Brown
Customer Reviews:
Hate me, but this is better than the Hepburn version.......2007-08-22
Most crtics would disagree with me, but I liked this movie far better than the Bogart/Hepburn version. I love Harrison Ford--he's very sexy and I never thought Bogie was even attractive, much less sexy and I'm 58 years old. Julia Ormond is also far prettier than Audrey Hepburn. I liked Hepburn, she was just way too fragile looking. It was always hard for me to see her as an adult. In this remake, Linus'(Harrison Ford) transformation from total workaholic to a man who understood the need to LIVE was gradual and believable. I saw little, if any, difference in the character as played by Bogart. And Julia Ormond's Sabrina went convincingly from awkward teen with a major crush on the younger brother (SPOILER ALERT) to sophisticated adult who discovers real love with the older brother, Linus. I absolutely loved the ending. Highly recommended.
Disappointed.......2007-08-11
The DVD is faulty! It's not able to load or play - an error happens when loading it! I'd like to return it please.
The 1st movie's a classic, but the second speaks to me more.......2007-07-29
Now I admit, I am very biased with this movie because my mother named me after the 1st film, so for me to be a fan of this movie is something of a no-brainer. I own both versions, and I really think each movie should be judged by its own merits. However, if I have to choose which I favor, it would have to be the 1995 re-make because I feel that it speaks more to my generation that the earlier version.
Of course, Humphrey Bogart is the strong, silent type, and Audrey Hepburn is the epitome of elegance, and they played their roles in a way that was accurate and appropriate for 1954, but let's face it, Audrey's sort of elegance for many today is somewhat unattainable. I liked the way Julia Ormond interpreted Sabrina because while she is played as savvy, she is still somewhat vulnerable, and not afraid to be so. I also liked the way she brings out the vulnerability and tenderness in Linus "the world's only living heart donor" as played by Harrison Ford.
A few other reasons why I appreciate the remake?
The various characters were better developed in the 2d movie. In the original it was as though they were blending in with the furniture. Linus's admin just cracked me up with her dry humor. The mother was pretty funny at points, too. I also liked the fact that Elizabeth Tyson is played up more intelligently in the re-make than in the original...and that despite the temptation in the end, David honors his commitment to Elizabeth in the end. About the only "airhead" was the Angie Dickenson character, but even that role was humorous. I cracked up watching her be all flirty with Linus at the dinner.
Recently, I had a chance to read the entire script from the original 1953 Samuel Taylor play entitled Sabrina Fair: A Woman Of The World. I discovered that the 1995 movie is actually closer to the script of the play than the 1954 movie. In the original movie, there's no mention of the fact that Fairchild, the chauffer having become a millionaire over the years by listening into Larabee Sr.'s transactions, but the play and the remake do mention it. I feel that part is essential to the story as part of the issue in both movies was class distinction...albeit moreso in the former than in the latter.
My only complaint? I used to have this movie in VHS, and that version included a video of Sting singing the song "Moonlight." I was disappointed that the DVD did not include this beautiful song.
Sabrina - Harrison Ford.......2007-06-27
A solidly enjoyable mushy romance. Nice update in that the Sabrina charactor was a much more substantial human being.
Good...........2007-06-16
...but not as good as the original. I think everyone did a great job in it and you will enjoy it.

This box-office hit from 1969 is an important pioneer of the American independent cinema movement, and a generational touchstone to boot. Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper play hippie motorcyclists crossing the Southwest and encountering a crazy quilt of good and bad people. Jack Nicholson turns up in a significant role as an attorney who joins their quest for awhile and articulates society's problem with freedom as Fonda's and Hopper's characters embody it. Hopper directed, essentially bringing the no-frills filmmaking methods of legendary, drive-in movie producer Roger Corman (The Little Shop of Horrors) to a serious feature for the mainstream. The film can't help but look a bit dated now (a psychedelic sequence toward the end particularly doesn't hold up well), but it retains its original power, sense of daring, and epochal impact. --Tom Keogh

"We Need to Make More Movies Like Dr. Doolittle".......2007-08-19
If you haven't seen Easy Rider... you should. It is a great movie. It is a bit dated now but it is still a legendary flick. I am a motorcyclist and I grew up with this movie. Most people that have seen it already will love this DVD version. But what I wanted to talk about is the added documentary Easy Rider: Shaking The Cage. This alone is worth the price of the DVD. I would have bought it and paid full price just to see Dennis Hopper, Peter Fonda, Luke Askew and the rest of the people involved talk about the movie, how it was thought up and how it was done from beginning to end. I loved this documentary and have watched it about 10 times. Peter Fonda and Hopper alone are just great and it is cool watching these guys now in their 60's talking about making this movie.
Easy Rider: Shaking The Cage... make sure you watch this if you get this DVD. It is AWESOME.
I can't believe I just discovered it.......2007-07-07
Well I'm 38 years too late but I just discovered this movie. This is not one of my most favorite movies. There really aren't any hippy movies like it. I mean you have Cheech and Chong, Half baked, and a handful of other comedies. But nothing serious, hippies weren't just bumbling morons. This portrays hippies in a real dramatic light. Let's you in their world and wanting more. I liked it and highly recommend it.
Easy Rider.......2007-06-27
This film represents myself, and my generation from the early 60's. I understand and identify with it it completely. Sometimes those timess become a little fuzzy in my memory, but a film like this brings it all back. It was actually made during that time also, with actors in it who truly felt their parts. Whenever I feel like like revisiting my 60's adventures, I watch this movie.
You'll either love it, or hate it. .......2007-05-11
This film is wildly popular with a certain type of person, but it's just as easy to find "that" other type of person who can't stand Easy Rider and see nothing positive about it. After watching this film, you will no doubt have realized that there was two main kinds of characters in this story. One was the character that was open minded, tolerant, and accepting of the world. The other type of character was hateful, close-minded, violent, and very scared of character number one and all the things that those kind of characters represent.
First off, this is what today we would call an independent film. This movie was very renegade when it came out in the market. This particular DVD has a documentary called "Shaking the Cage" inside the extras sub menu. Great documentary, and the title says it all. Hopper and Fonda showed classic American balls by making this movie, and making it in the manner they did. Can you tell whose side I'm on yet?
The photography is amazing. All of the road shots in this movie are stunning to look at, and the locations throughout the film are real, gritty, and distinctive. I imagine that even if this film would have had a huge budget, it still would have appeared to be very raw. Hopper obviously wasn't making a fantasy movie here, he crafted a very real story and placed it in the real world. This is a film that is intended to get the audience thinking, get them asking questions, and yes, probably make you a little angry. The activism that was born and raised in the 60's is still there in Hopper and Fonda's creation. These two men have always been involved in what has been called the "counter-culture" movement, and I guess this film is what made them household names for doing so.
Awesome soundtrack as well, and how could there not be. I own the double CD of this film's soundtrack, and it's just beautiful music to listen to. Again, listening to it makes me think, and it makes me ask questions about my country and my world. In my opinion, anyone who considers themselves a truly free U.S. citizen should be a thinker, and should always have a little skeptic sitting on their shoulder asking questions about what is going on in the world around them.
I think this film will stand the test of time as not only an entertaining film, but a fairly accurate historical document that covers a very turbulent and important time in our nation's social history. If for no other reason than to take a glimpse into the late 60's to early 70's, this film is worth watching. You will no doubt find yourself clearly on one side of the fence or the other about Easy Rider, there is no fence sitting. If you like it, it's brilliant, but if you hate it, it's boring hippie garbage. It is what it is.

Maturation is a process fraught with insecurity and angst, and Sabrina (Melissa Joan Hart) is experiencing all the normal teenage emotions while simultaneously trying to hide her powers as a witch, and fit in at a normal high school. Imagine her surprise when, on her 17th birthday, Sabrina discovers that on top of her already packed schedule she must somehow find time to study for a test to earn her witch's license. What's worse, her Quizmaster (Alimi Ballard) from the other realm can be counted upon to throw a pop quiz whenever Sabrina least expects it. From mandatory enrollment in witch boot camp to working on the school parade float with her snooty nemesis Libby (Jenna Leigh Green) and joining her class on a field trip to Disneyworld, Sabrina's 17th year yields lots of important lessons about taking responsibility for her actions, nurturing a compassion for others, overcoming jealousy, and identifying the truly important things in her life. Luckily Sabrina's Aunts Hilda (Caroline Rhea) and Zelda (Beth Broderick), talking cat Salem (Nick Bakay), boyfriend Harvey (Nate Richert), and new friend Valerie (Lindsay Sloane) can be counted upon to lend their support and help Sabrina through even the most stressful days. A huge cast of guest stars throughout the 26-episode season include John Ratzenberger as Santa and Johnny Mathis as himself in "Sabrina Claus," Patrick Thomas O'Brien as Cupid in "The Equalizer," and a performance by 10,000 Maniacs in "A River of Candy Corn Runs Through It." i love this show!!!.......2007-08-31
I think that no one in this world could love this show as much as me. It was the best teenage sitcom that ever came on TV. I have both the first and the second season and i am eagerly anticipating the third season, does anyone know when it is coming out? I was very disappointed however that so much was cut out of the second season, I notice a couple places were the songs were changed and little scenes were cut out here and there, why do they do this? I see no point in taking out things when your are paying so much to have the whole season! The song change, though disappointing, does not upset me as much as missing part of the episodes, I really hope that the third season is better and they leave everything in it. And as a bonus some extra features would be nice! I only give this 4 stars because of the missing pieces, and I hope i can give season 3 5 stars!! I can't wait for the rest of the seasons!! I hope they come quickly!! I love this show!!
A Wholesome Family TV Show.......2007-08-23
Sabrina the Teenage Witch TV series is a time-less classic. It has all the ingredients of a classic family show. It is very entertaining. Non-offensive. It is a good-feel show. And it is a show with simple stories.
Watching the Sabrina dvds now is just as entertaining now as well as when it first aired. I can't wait for future dvd releases of the TV series other seasons.
It is unfortunate that the star, Melissa Joan Hart, grew up and could no longer continue this teenage series.
shame about the editing.......2007-08-20
I eagerly waited for this to come out on DVD and though the show is still great it's a shame that they have included cut version episodes for the DVD. A couple of the episodes don't make as much sense because there seem to be bits cut from them. They have also changed the music on one of the episodes. It's not a huge deal but it does take something away from the overall quality of the collection. The episodes improve more and more towards the end of the DVD where the show seems to get into its stride a bit more. I love the Disneyworld episode. I love Salem...I actually find myself believing he's a real cat! Overall, great. Only gets 4 stars because episodes have been cut and because there are no extras. A behind the scenes look would be nice
great show, a few drawbacks on dvd.......2007-08-11
The show is geared towards kids and young adults but some of the jokes are appealing to everyone. I think the 2nd and 3rd seasons were the show's peak, after that it went downhill. It's a great value if you liked the show - but like other people have mentioned it contains no special features and they removed a lot of the original music. If you haven't seen it in a while, you might not notice but if you're like me and you watch the reruns on ABC Family, you'll quickly pick up on that. I mean honestly, how much money would it have cost them to keep the song "Are you Jimmy Ray?" in the episode "When Teens Collide". I'm sure it wouldn't have amounted to much in royalties, jeez!
If you're trying to decide between the first and second seasons, I'd say go with the 2nd season. The show really got it's "stride" in it's second year, the writing/comedy is much better, as are the special effects, but both are great in their own rights.
And yeah, for such a great and memorable show they should have included bonus features. There's not even a commentary!
Are you kidding me?.......2007-08-09
I was soo happy to get Sabrina the Teenage witch, I was just super exitied! It was my favorite TV show for so many years...but i was so disapointed with the DVDs! They cut stuff out!!! I recorded them on VHS off the TV so i could watch them way back when it first aired, so i have been re-watching them on VHS for years, and I was mad when the TV station cut stuff out, But to put it onto DVD with the stuff cut out, that is WRONG! I am so MAD! I looked forward to haveing the entire episodes...but I have the TV cuts of it. This sucks. They cut out some of my favorite parts
For example, in Witchs Licance part 2, Hild, Zelda, and Salem go to the other realm to get a lab top. Remember that? And Hilda got into an argument with a kid to push a button that said, 'Don't Push'. So it was hard to get the joke that came next at the house.
You may think that it is so little, but since it was my favorite TV show, it hurts. It majorly sucks. I feel like i got a ripped off copy of it out of a guys jacket in an ally. I am actully about in tears over this. This rediculous!

Product Description
Sabrina is charming, humorous and aglow with some of Hollywood's greatest stars. Humphrey Bogart, William Holden and Audrey Hepburn star in a Cinderella stroy directed by renowned filmmaker Billy Wilder (Sunset Boulevard, Some Like It Hot). Bogie and Holden are the mega-rich Larrabee brothers of Long Island. Bogie's all work, Holden's all playboy. But when Sabrina, daughter of the family's chauffer, returns from Paris all grown up and glamourous, the stage is set for some family fireworks as the brothers fall under the spell of Hepburn's delightful charms.
Amazon.com essential video
Audrey Hepburn is the delightful young Sabrina, the daughter of a chauffeur who is hopelessly in love with David Larrabee (William Holden), the playboy younger son in the rich Long Island household her father works for. In order to help her forget her woes, Sabrina is shipped off to cooking school in Paris. While there, she befriends a baron who provides a bit of culture--and the encouragement to snip off her childlike ponytail. Upon her return to New York, Sabrina is transformed into a sophisticated woman, and David is entranced by her. However, his older brother Linus (Humphrey Bogart) has arranged David's marriage to Elizabeth Tyson in order to seal a business merger and thus must steer David away from Sabrina. To do this, Linus takes on the task of wooing her for himself. Full of great dialogue ("A woman happy in love, she burns the soufflé; a woman unhappy in love, she forgets to turn on the oven") and wonderful performances, this film is a romantic masterpiece. Also enjoyable is the 1995 remake, starring Julia Ormond and Harrison Ford. --Jenny Brown
Customer Reviews:
Romantic.......2007-08-12
I love this movie, it is cute, romantic, and wonderful. If you want to watch a great old fashion movie, this is the one to see. :)
Sabrina.......2007-06-26
Perfectly suited to high-brow romantic comedies, Hepburn blossoms before our eyes as the world's most cultivated chauffeur's daughter in Billy Wilder's delightful "Sabrina." The young star smoothly makes the transition from a skinny awkward girl who fantasizes about life among the privileged classes to the stunning and sophisticated object of desire for both handsome Holden and the more mature Bogart, who, like most any other man, just can't help himself. "Sabrina" is infectious, effervescent comedy, done the Wilder way.
Paris when it rains..........2007-06-21
I want to go to Paris with Linus. No seriouly this was a really sweet movie that I have seen at least fifteen times or more and never get bored. Love William Holden and Audrey Hepburn together. Read somewhere that Billy Wilder was wanting Cary Grant for the role of Linus, would of been interesting. Love Bogie too...I thought this was way better than the remake with Harrison Ford but I guess that is if you like old movies compared to the newer one I much rather see a classic..If you haven't seen this you really need to check this one out you won't be disappointed.
Sabrina.......2007-06-09
The clarity of image and sharpness of the black and white production take this beautiful classic to the excellent level it so deserves.
TIMELESS.......2007-06-02
I have enjoyed this film since I first saw it on network tv over 40 years ago. Over the ensuing years I've read and heard about the on-set tension between Bogie and Audrey but I've never seen anything suggesting it in the film. All of the cast are excellent, the set design and script and direction as well. As for Bogie being mis-cast as a Wall Street tycoon, a type he supposedly despised, being the pro that he was you'd never know it. I think the casting was inspired. If Cary Grant had played the part, the ending would have been far less inspired - more predictable. His looks and charm were that irresistable to women of all ages - ending up with Grace Kelly and Sophia Loren in contemporary films. Bogie's tough, hardened exterior serves the character well - you can easily believe he hasn't been involved with anyone in years. There's a funny uncertainty about the standing on the ledge story he tells her. Is it merely pretense to gain her sympathy for him as an older lonely guy, or is it in large part the truth? I don't think we'd believe any of it from Grant. Grant usually ran away from women in his films or at least discouraged them as best he could as in Charade. I'll never forget the ending where Holden forces him to confront his love for Audrey while her ship is sailing outside the board-room window and his commandeering a tug to make their rendezvous afterall. It shows that having great wealth and power can insure that love makes the world go around.

Looking back at season 1 of The Cosby Show, it's easy to forget that momentous history was being made. Not only did this immensely popular sitcom hold the #1 spot among all network TV shows for five consecutive seasons (a record that still stands), but it promoted an evolutionary progression that influenced the entire TV industry from that point forward. African Americans had enjoyed sitcom success in the past (on Julia, The Jeffersons, and Good Times), but the idealized family of Cliff and Clair Huxtable (Bill Cosby and Phylicia Rashad) represented a new and quietly revolutionary perspective; married for 21 years with five children (one in college, a detail unmentioned in the pilot episode), the Huxtables were happy and successful (he's a doctor, she's a lawyer), and issues of race were almost entirely irrelevant to the show's universal appeal. Making their Thursday-night debut on September 20, 1984, they were conceived by Cosby (as "executive consultant Dr. William H. Cosby Jr., Ed.D."), cocreators Ed. Weinberger and Michael Leeson, and executive producers Tom Werner and Marcy Carsey, with a matter-of-fact approach to upgrading the African American image, built upon Cosby's rubber-faced popularity as a stand-up comedian and rooted in the complete and unbiased integration of the black experience into the American mainstream. More to the point, The Cosby Show was eminently respectable family entertainment, perhaps too squeaky-clean for some tastes, but immediately popular at a time when Eddie Murphy (in Beverly Hills Cop) was honing a more profane image that Cosby disapproved of.
The show was also perfectly cast for mass appeal, from the irresistible precociousness of Keshia Knight Pulliam (as the youngest and most charming Huxtable daughter, Rudy) to the stylish adolescence of Lisa Bonet (years before her controversial role in Angel Heart) as 16-year-old Denise; Malcolm-Jamal Warner as outspoken teenager Theo; Tempestt Bledsoe as sensible younger daughter Vanessa; and Sabrina LaBeauf as college student and eventual mother of twins, Sondra. Combined with the effortless chemistry of Cosby and Rashad (credited in Season 1 as Phylicia Ayers Allen), the entire cast forged an easygoing, loosely-rehearsed dynamic that was genuinely familial.
Given The Cosby Show's immense popularity, it's deeply regrettable that the exorbitant cost of original music rights resulted in this DVD release of edited episodes that were shortened, with different music cues added, for perpetual syndication. Fans eager to see the original NBC broadcasts were understandably outraged, and this shortcoming should be addressed in DVD releases of subsequent seasons. In truth, the episodes (including "Goodbye, Mr. Fish," a perfect example of the show's universal appeal) are not significantly diminished by the careful editing; for casual fans, the difference is barely worth mentioning. And while the 90-minute bonus feature "The Cosby Show: A Look Back" (a clip show originally broadcast May 19, 2002) suffers from the conspicuous absence of Bonet (who by then had mostly retreated from show business), it duly conveys the long-term value (and moral values) of the series, which singlehandedly restored the fortunes of NBC while embracing familial togetherness that would inform many of the popular sitcoms that followed its noble example. --Jeff Shannon
Description
The Cosby Show depicted a close-knit and prosperous African-American family from New York City. Dr. Heathcliff (OB-GYN) and Clair (attorney) Huxtable were a happily married, dual-profession couple with aspirations of raising their 5 children in an uplifting, positive environment. The Cosby Show appeared on NBC from 1984 to 1992, becoming one of the most popular programs in TV history. It was an instant smash hit, holding TV's #1 slot for a record 5 consecutive years and stayed in the Top 20 shows for all eight seasons it was on NBC.
Customer Reviews:
A Trip Back Home.......2007-09-09
Before I started watching these DVDs, I forgot how much I enjoyed Cosby as a kid. The characters, the relationships, and the non-stop humor (not to mention Lisa Bonet's beautiful face) make this the perfect show for anyone fed up with the mindless dredge being shown on network television nowadays. There are real values and positive role models in every episode, and I plan on showing these to my kids as examples of good behavior in real life situations.
Great TV!.......2007-09-06
I had wanted The Cosby Show on DVD for a while and the sale price could not be beat so I bought it. Boy am I glad! While I catch reruns on occassion on Nick at Nite, the DVD set has allowed me to watch on my schedule AND share the Huxtables with my kids. They LOVE it. (As did I at their age!) The memories special on the last disc was also amazing. I knew the show was special when I saw it as a child, but I didn't realize how groundbreaking until I saw that special!
Move Out Of My Way! It's Thursday!.......2007-09-04
When I was a child, I didn't care what was going on elsewhere in the world when Thursday night came around. You'd see kids scurry away from new Barbie dolls, Heman, and Transformers. You'd see children suddenly act right when this show came on. There were positive African American shows around like 227, Amen, and others, but nothing even remotely compared to the rich culture and comedy of this show. When the eighth season ended, I felt so empty inside like "What am I going to do now?" But then I smiled because my mother taped every single episode, so I just went through the tapes and rewatched everything from scratch. Even now, I still stop to watch the show on syndication. When I found out that the DVDs were coming out, I was bumrushing the Internet to get all four copies available. Just as I knew I would, I loved watching this season. I laughed so hard my side hurt at the episode when Bill Cosby talked about how much his Father's Day gifts sucked. When he turned out the lights and things started lighting up, tears fell out of my eyes. Classic, wholesome entertainment. Even in a two-parent household with an older brother and a dog, I still wanted to be a part of the Cosby family too. Some young men looked at Cosby as a father figure because they didn't have one; I looked at him as a cool play dad for myself and all of his family as my own play family. There was not one episode of this entire show that I didn't enjoy. I appreciated how they introduced Black art, music, and culture without lecturing; how the family was positive without being corny; alert without being obnoxious; and how it lacked the melodrama that television has today. I can't wait to start on Season 2 of rewatching these shows. I think I've memorized at least half of the scripts.
Typical 80s sitcom- fluffy, sappy, saccharin, hammy and over the top. .......2007-08-20
C'mon "Cosby Police." You know who you are. The ones who are compelled to silent my reviews of "The Great Cosby Show," because I dare to call it as I see it. So...I find it amusing that my original review of this drek of a program was muted- I'm sure there's some PC monitors who found it offensive that anyone dared to diss the great Cosby Show. That was actually part of the point of my original review. It was praised for it's "wholesomeness, great role models for African Americans" during a decade of Eddie Murphy type comedy, etc. But none of that makes this a good, much less great show. This has all the appeal of "Full House,' minus the "You got it dudes." So it is worthy of sitting the kiddies in front of the TV to watch. How any adult could stomach it, especially in hindsight amazes me to this day. It's full of "Awwwww" type cutesiness, endless pounding of ad-nauseum scholastical preachiness, and feel good fashion statements, as it were. All of which perfectly fits the mold of "The Brady Bunch." In fact, this show is the Brady Bunch of the 1980s (compare the 2 series and prove me wrong). It's a meandering, pandering, suck up of a show that is funny only to those who are laughing before the show even begins. It typifies the other over rated, unfunny sitcoms of the 80s that were celebrated because TV had to hand out awards to someone. So why not hand it to the wholesome Huxtables, no matter how hammy, saccharine, predictable, redundant and horribly written and acted it is. This is the most over rated "comedy" in the history of TV. Don't waste your time or money. You want the best Cosby comedy ever with lessons and morals to boot, buy the "Fat Albert" cartoon series. It was actually funny. This one is just plain corny, predictable, sappy, and so sweet it hurts your teeth. And Phylicia Rashad brings to TV the most annoying character since Granny Clampet of "The Beverly Hillbillies." The fact that this show was number one for so long is an indictment of how much garbage TV is able to cram down viewers throats- a testament to P.T. Barnum's "there's a sucker born every minute." Remember, "Love Boat" and "Fantasy Island" too were huge ratings winners. So much for ratings.

Breakfast at Tiffany's
Winner of two Oscars, the romantic comedy that sparkles like diamonds! From the opening strains of Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer's haunting, Oscar-winning song "Moon River," you'll once again be under the alluring spell of that madcap, carefree New York playgirl known as Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) in this 24-carat romantic comedy based of Truman Capote's best-selling novella. George Peppard is the struggling and "sponsored" young writer who finds himself swept into Holly's dizzying, delightfully unstructured lifestyle as she determinedly scours Manhattan for a suitable millionaire to marry. The sparkling special features on this Anniversary Edition DVD only add to the luster of director Blake Edwards' timeless film classic. Patricia Neal, Buddy Ebsen, Martin Balsam and Mickey Rooney co-star; Mancini won an additional Academy Award® for his enthralling musical score.

Romantic Audrey.......2007-09-05
I have been a fan of Audrey Hepburn since I was a little girl I wish I could have even a little of her sophistication yet be a perky woman. Her eyes draw you to her beautiful face. She has great poise and huge following, I will order more of her films.
Awesome!.......2007-06-27
I watched these all in a row! Soooo awesome! They just don't make movies like these anymore!
Beautiful Hepburn.......2007-02-16
I totally love these 3 movies by Audrey Hepburn, there is an amazing aura about her...
Audrey Hepburn Collection.......2007-01-25
If you are an Audrey Hepburn fan (and who isn't) you will love this collection.
Wonderful Value for Masterpiece Collection.......2007-01-19
Audrey Hepburn never goes out of style. I got this for my 18 year old for Christmas and she absolutely loves it. There are quite a few teenaged girls who still love Audrey as evidenced on their myspace pages.

The hot girl rock group The Cheetah Girls is about to discover just how important dreams and true friendship are as they head to Barcelona for an exciting summer vacation. When Chanel's (Adrienne Bailon) mother announces a trip to Barcelona to meet her current boyfriend's family, Chanel is distraught at being separated from the Cheetah Girls for the summer and worries that her mother may decide to move to Barcelona permanently. Galleria (Raven-Symoné) soon cooks up a plan that lands all of the Cheetah girls in Barcelona for a music festival, but once there, the girls' individual interests in music, dance, fashion design and even romance sweep them in so many different directions that there's little time for rehearsing together. Add in some very real competition from Barcelona's favorite upcoming singer Marisol (Belinda Peregrin) and her conniving mother and a lack of familiarity with the music festival rules, and the Cheetah Girls chances of winning the contest begin to fade. Galleria soon realizes that she must let each of her friends go in the direction their dreams take them, even if it means the end of the Cheetah Girls. In the end, all the girls learn a vital lesson about the importance of tolerance, friendship, and dreams. This production is bursting with tight music and awesome dance segments choreographed by High School Musical's choreographer Kenny Ortega. Bonus features include a sing-along version of the movie, the music video "Dance With Me" performed by Drew Seeley featuring Belinda, and tips from the Cheetah Girls on how to be "Cheetah-licious" in everything from fashion and makeup to friendship and diversity. GREAT MOVIE.......2007-05-15
MY DAUGHTER IS 7 AND WATCHES THIS ALL THE TIME, SHE LOVES TO SING AND DANCE TO IT. GREAT GROUP FOR YOUNG GIRLS. POSITIVE ROLE MODELS.
An awsome movie.......2007-04-05
This movie is as the Cheetahs would say CHEETAH-LICIOUS. It has messages in it and well I better lay out the storyline.
Chanel finds out she is going to have to go to Barcolona Spain with her mother to vist Luc. She is not happy but the Cheetahs find an ad for a music festival and end up in Barcolona. They find new romances with Dorinda and Jacqin a Spainsh dancer. And New dreams Aqua finds a love for fashion designing. And of course new friends Chanel befriends a spainsh singer Marisol. They do get distracted but in the end can they sort it out.
This is an excelent movie and is good for the whole family
A great film with music, SPAIN, and more!.......2007-03-29
This movie The Cheetah Girls 2 is amazing. It features great acting, also the beautiful star of Disney's That's So Raven, Raven-Symone Pearman. The movie starts off in New York City's Performance hall, then a couple minutes later your in Barcelona, Spain. Where it features very many artifacts, and culture. Also some Spanish, and Spanish inspired music. Dont worry 1 of 13 songs in this movie is only Spanish, the rest is english. I love this movie, I watch it like every other day. I would have to say it is better than High School Musical, acting, music, and directed wise. You should definitely buy this amazing DVD/movie!
Better than expected!!!.......2007-01-27

The music was good and the storyline was made perfectly.

Being a teenager is always difficult, but imagine how complicated things must be for a teenage witch trying to fit in at a mortal high school. In this first (1996) season of CBS Television's live-action Sabrina The Teenage Witch series, Sabrina's aunts Zelda and Hilda have provided their niece with a happy, relatively normal life following the divorce of her parents, but her 16th birthday brings a big surprise--it turns out that her aunts are witches who have known all along that Sabrina is half mortal and half witch. Now that she's turning 16, Sabrina suddenly finds herself in the possession of special powers which she must develop and learn to control. Even Sabrina's cat Salem turns out to be a witch imprisoned in a cat's body. After the initial shock and denial wear off, Sabrina discovers that there are some definite benefits to being able to turn back time and cast the occasional spell on her classmates. Essentially your typical teenager, Sabrina struggles with popularity, labels, and love along a journey toward personal growth and an understanding of the value of rules, the importance of self-esteem, and the universality of guilt and making mistakes. Sometimes magic eases Sabrina's way, while other times it seems only to complicate things. Whether hanging out in the world of high school and American suburbia, the red planet Mars, or the surreal Pleasure dome where a witch can have absolutely anything she wants, Sabrina is really just an average teenage witch struggling through adolescence. (Ages 8 and older) --Tami Horiuchi
Description
When Sabrina Spellman is informed by her aunts, Hilda and Zelda, that she is a witch on her 16th birthday, she is hesitant to believe them. Having been sent to live with them in Massachusetts by her Warlock father and mortal mother, Sabrina learns the tricks of magic in order to receive her witch's license. Along the way, she gets into many scrapes while figuring out how certain spells work. She also has to keep the secret from her boyfriend, Harvey, friends Jenny and later Valerie, stuck-up nemesis Libby, and her ever-suspicious vice-principal, Mr. Kraft.
Customer Reviews:
sabrina, the teenage witch: the complete first season.......2007-09-02
This is a delightful series and one I am finally able to view completely. The trials, mishaps and successes that our budding witch go through are funny. The show is well-balanced by the comedic talents of the two aunts.
Absolute genius!.......2007-08-13
Oh the joy of being able to enter the magical world of Sabrina again after so many years. Once I'd started I couldn't stop. This really is a gem of a show. My only problem is that they're not releasing the DVDs as fast as I can watch them! I'm gagging to see the rest of the series' now! Absolutely brilliant! It must be ten years since I last saw this but it's lost none of its charm!
The mechanical cat should get an academy award,.......2007-07-12
because he had to put up with the talentless Sabrina, and her two dumb bunny aunts. This had to be one of the worst sit-coms in history of sit-coms, or at the very least in the top 10 worst. The best thing in the whole series is the cat, as I said in the beginning, should get an award. The canned laughter was necessary because the show was not funny, and a real audience would be booing and climbing over each other to get out of the theatre. P U this one is a real stinker! They should pay you.
Sabrina the "Feel-Good" Teenage Witch.......2007-06-12
There are very few "feel-good" TV shows like Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
It's episodes are timeless and will find enjoyment at any generation level.
It also helps that Melissa Joan Hart was made for the part. That is the reason that the show lasted for 7 seasons.
It could have gone on forever if it weren't for the fact that the TV series could not make the transition to Sabrina the Adult-age Witch to accomodate the grown-up Melissa. This series will always be remembered about a witch and her surrounding teenage environment.
Good ole' TGIF!!.......2007-05-19
This was my favorite TV show back in the Golden Age of Friday night television. A place where kids and adults alike could sit in front of the TV and laugh the evening away.
Hart plays a sixteen year old girl who finds out from her eccentric aunts that she's a witch. So, armed with the task of learning her magic and being a "normal" teenager at the same time, she has many adventures and blunders but it's a blast watching them!
Season 2... hurry!!
