When the Children's Theater Workshop's Sesame Street first aired on television in 1969, it was a revolutionary new show aimed specifically at preschool children--an audience previously untargeted by television programming. Exhaustively-researched and tested on real audiences of preschoolers, this "experiment in kid programming" aimed to teach preschoolers the alphabet, numbers, body parts, rhyming, and basic reasoning skills while thoroughly entertaining them. Through the use of humor, the amazing puppetry of Frank Oz and Jim Henson, animation, the incredibly catchy music of Joe Raposo and Jeffrey Moss, and a fast-action pace borrowed from the television commercial format, Sesame Street was, and still is, more successful at educating and entertaining children than anyone initially imagined. What's more, the lessons learned by generations of preschoolers went far beyond simple school-readiness skills to include values like acceptance, cooperation, and inclusiveness because the urban Sesame Street was a place populated by people and monsters young viewers could identify with, where anything could happen, and where every ethnicity, generation, and species co-existed and interacted harmoniously.
Sesame Street: Old School Volume 1 1969-1974 offers a sampling of the first five seasons of Sesame Street and includes the first episode of each season in its entirety as well as a large selection of classic segments from each season highlighting some of the most memorable sketches ("Bein' Green," "Rubber Duckie," "Whistle a Happy Tune," and Super-Grover in "Telephone Booth"), favorite human characters like Bob and Mr. Hooper, and guest appearances by celebrities like Bill Cosby, Lena Horne, Jackie Robinson, Carol Burnett, and Jesse Jackson. Adult viewers will be transported back in time as they witness Bert's frustration with his ever-noisy roommate Ernie, chuckle at the antics of Grover and his demanding customer in Grover's Restaurant, and wonder if Snuffleupagus will ever show himself to someone besides Big Bird. Other well-remembered moments include pinball number count, the baker who inevitably tumbles down the stairway with a handful of cream pies, the ever-munching Cookie Monster, "Here is Your Life" segments, Bert "Doin' the Pigeon," and the inevitably grumpy Oscar the Grouch. Post-Elmo preschoolers and their parents will laugh, learn, grow, and connect with one another as they share this classic compilation of Sesame Street moments. Bonus features include the original sales pitch reel (introduced by Joan Ganz Cooney and hosted by Kermit the Frog and Rowlf the Dog) and a thick booklet rich with history, trivia, and a pullout activity section for children. (Ages 2 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

First DVD.......2007-09-08
The DVD is a good DVD, but I was disappointed for several reasons. For one, they left a lot of good stuff out of the first DVD. Second, they repeated several skits (if we want to see them over, we can play them as many times as we want...so I feel that it was a waste of DVD space.) I also wish that they would continue to release classic Sesame Street DVDs in a timely matter.
it's too old.......2007-09-04
My 3 yr old dau rec'd this as a xmas present last year and she didnt much care for it - i guess the graphics and special effects were dated for her - she's a huge fan of the new ones we catch on tv.
I definitely wouldn't recommend this for children of the 21st century - it's too dated. She does on the other hand LOVE all the old muppet shows my hubby and i grew up watching.
Does it get any better than this?.......2007-09-02

My kids get to enjoy what I did 30 years ago and they love it! I agree with a previous comment, box sets of seasons should be produced starting with season 1. The old Sesame Street is much better than the new!
Great memories.......2007-09-01
What a great collection of memories. There are five episodes in all, plus lots of bonus skits and material. My kids (4 and 7), who have never seen the current version of Sesame Street, love this. And it's interesting to me to have a grown-up's perspective on the material and methods.
I can definitely see that they've changed some things over the years, and the early shows seem to be more loosely scripted. There's less emotional sensitivity than I remember, but maybe that's just a matter of perspective.
I love seeing The King of Eight, Guy Smiley, Grover's Restaurant, Twiddlebugs Go to the Zoo, Martians Telephone, Ladybug Picnic, Bread, Milk, and Butter, etc, but I do miss the pinball counting- wish that was in there. Overall, great stuff, and I'd love to see more! Best of all... no Elmo.
Love, love, LOVE this!!!.......2007-08-28
I'll admit it- I'm a kid at heart, I really am. I grew up with Sesame Street, Mister Rogers, Captain Kangaroo, The Electric Company, and Big Blue Marble. I learned to read by watching Sesame Street. I love SuperGrover. I love Ladybug Picnic. I love Bill Cosby. I love it all (except maybe Elmo, but my daughter loves him, so I have to grin and bear it)!
This DVD set is INCREDIBLE! I am SO HAPPY with my purchase! My 2 year old loves to watch it, too. I will DEFINITELY by the next set, and the one after that, and the one after that... until Elmo appears on them. Then I'm done.
Get this set- you won't regret it!

When three thirtysomething friends with woman troubles (Luke Wilson, Will Ferrell, and Vince Vaughn) decide to form a fraternity, it's supposedly to save Wilson from losing his house, which the nearby college is trying to claim for academic purposes. But really, Ferrell and Vaughn are desperate to return to the reckless, feckless days of beer bongs and hot chicks, and they drag Wilson along with them as they throw themselves into gathering frat pledges of all ages. Old School could have been just another string of bad jokes hanging on a flimsy plot, but the script and the cast have a jovial energy and just enough grounding in reality--at least, up until the obligatory beat-the-system ending, but by that point you'll forgive the excesses of this silly, cheerful, and frequently funny movie. Featuring Jeremy Piven and Juliette Lewis, with cameos by Snoop Dog, Andy Dick, and others. --Bret Fetzer

The funniest movie I've seen in years. I don't usually like "frat boy" humor, but this is the one exception.

Ever watch a movie the first time and laugh so hard your stomach hurts, then watch it again and think...now what was funny about that? Enter, Old School. and there ya go...
C'mon bring your green hat........2007-07-14
Getting to watch Will Farrell and Vince Vaugh start their own fraernity is enough to catch my interest. This is one of my favorite comedy movies and I highly recommend it. What could be funnier then watching Will Farrell stumble around a kids party after being shot in the neck with an animal tranquilizer? And thats only one of the many hilarous parts. It's definately a great one to pop in when you're hanging out with the guys.
All-time classic.......2007-06-27
Old School will go down as an all-time classic comedy! Love Luke Wilson, Vince Vaughn, and Will Ferrell. There wasn't enough Will Ferrell, but that's what made his parts so great. Great movie! A must have for anyones collection.

Fans of comedian Jamie Kennedy will probably best appreciate this lightweight comedy about a breakdancing fool who gets a second chance at stardom. Kennedy is top-billed as a hip-hop fanatic whose breakdancing moves put him in a coma circa 1987; 20 years later, he's revived and wants to reunite his crew, but finds they've moved on in less than spectacular ways. The affections of his school crush (TV reporter Maria Menounos) prove to be enough inspiration for him, but there's a former rival (Smallville's Michael Rosenbaum) to overcome. Kennedy is a funny performer, and he's well supported by Rosenbaum and Miguel Nunez Jr., as one of his crew, but an overreliance on bathroom humor and '80s kitsch is a clear signal that the screenwriters were floundering once they got past the initial concept. The Old Skool DVD includes full-screen and widescreen versions of the film, as well as a selection of deleted scenes. --Paul Gaita
Description
A young break dancer (Jamie Kennedy) hits his head during a talent show and slips into a coma for 20 years. Waking up in 2006, he looks to revive his break dancing career with the help of his girlfriend and his parents, while dealing with all of the changes the world has gone through over the past 20 years.

Loved it.......2007-09-11
Ok first of all, I was born in '81 so of course, I am biased via the nostalgic 80's toy references in this movie. I liked the cast, everyone seemed to know their role pretty well and either made you laugh till you cried or made you hate them. Rosenbaum's villain is easily one of the most hateable people you'll ever see as he plays a sassy, rich boy, conceited bully that seems to have no soul. And the "homeless guy" is one of the characters that make you laugh out loud when you're quoting his lines months down the road. SO MANY memorable lines in this one! One of my favorite comedies in my collection.
Mildly Nastolgic Snore-Fest.......2007-09-08
As a child of the 80's, I was quite excited to check this out and maybe relive some 80's memories and maybe have a few laughs since this did star Jamie Kennedy who's unscripted antics can often have me doubled over in laughter.
What a disappointment.
First of all, the 80's portion of the movie was not only brief, but inaccurate. And then worst, the movie was hardly funny. I chucked a couple of times but I expected so much more from Kennedy. In the end, it turned into a slapstick comedy aimed at eleven year olds. There is just one problem with that.... eleven year olds will not understand this movie because they don't understand the world pre-Internet, pre-politically correct, pre-New Star Wars, pre-iPod, and pre-White Michael Jackson. The jokes of Different Strokes, Beta Max, Night Rider, Smurfs, Garbage Pail Kids, and others will go right over their heads.
In the end, I rate this a waste of my time and can't really fathom who the target market of this film was. I often end my reviews saying who would like and who wouldn't like a certain movie/book/video game/etc but I can't think of anybody who this movie would be intended for unless you are really hard up on catching a new flick. Do your self a favor and don't bother yourself with this movie.
Brings back great memories.......2007-09-05
Anyone who had the privilege of growing up a child of the 80's will find this film moderately funny. It has all the classic nuances that made the 80's! Garbage Pail Kids, Smurfs, Break dancing and Star Wars! How could you go wrong...? In short, if you want a short break from reality and want some great laughs, check it out!
You call this a movie?.......2007-08-30
What a waste of time, and a pathetic excuse of a movie. I went to college in the 80's, dancing and people had a heck of alot more class than that!! Don't waste your time or money on this piece of junk. If they had a zero rating I would have used that instead.
What a piece of du du.......2007-08-30
This movie could not have been worse. An entire movie and maybe 3 or 4 laughs the whole time. The romance story was absurd, the acting was awful, the story itself was ridiculous. The dancing... dancing? Well, I guess that is what they were doing, why couldn't they get some real break dancer to sit in for these no talent actors.
Don't rent or ever buy this movie. It has got to be one of the worst movies I've ever seen in my life and I grew up in the 80's. The references to everything 80's was amusing, but the movie was so obnoxious and stupid, that it detracted from it. A movie that could have been funny and good turned out to be such garbage.
Better to be in a coma during the movie than actually watching this trash.

Customer Reviews:
"I like it!".......2007-09-03
Everyone is over analyzing this movie. It's just plain fun and light-not too serious or deep. I first saw this on public tv in the late 80's and prior to that didn't even know it existed as in the past I had seen "The Trouble With Angels" several times and even recorded it off of a public tv station here in Chicago on a beta machine back in 1982.
Stella Stevens always seems to be stereo typed into these roles in which her character is loud, boisterous and hyper; ie. "Linda Rogo" in the original movie "The Poseidon Adventure." Here, "Sister George" is no exception-there are moments when I fully support what her character's beliefs and ideas are and then there are times when she gets too loud and irritating.
My favorite scene is when the girls shortened their hems of their skirts and were go-go dancing to that 60's style at the all boys school and the band singing the theme song of the movie. I couldn't get that song off of my mind when I first saw this film and caught myself singing it to myself numerous times!
This is not as good as the original film........2007-07-29
My granddaughter really enjoyed Hayley Mills in the original film and wanted to see the sequel. She was disappointed that Mills was not in it and it didn't keep her attention. My husband and I watched it and there are so many scenes of the bus and the title song that it is pretty ridiculous. There are a few fun moments though. I remember it being much more enjoyable when I saw it on the big screen. I'd have to say it is a wholesome movie though so more worthwhile that most other stuff out there for kids today.
Wish there were more.......2007-06-27
I have always loved these movies and I would love to see more like them.
Fun, nostalgic film.......2007-06-24
A great sequel to "The Trouble With Angels" that reflects the Catholic church at a time when it was actively trying to look forward, rather than regress.
A strait-laced but good-hearted older Mother Superior is convinced by a younger, progressive nun to take a load of high school girls to a peace rally (yes, a peace rally! Try that with a Catholic school these days) in California. They have various mis-adventures, and everyone learns a thing or two: Including both the older and younger nun.
Even if you're not a Catholic, you're sure to find some fun and nostalgia in this film.
Where Angels Go Trouble Follows.......2006-12-29
Yuck! I agree with the reviewers who say this shouldn't be called a sequel. This movie shows what must have gone wrong in the Church to have had such an exodus from the convents during the 70's. Thankfully, the trend is reversing. The first movie was cute. I wanted to share it (The Trouble With Angels), with my daughter and got this one by mistake. I had seen it (Where Angels Go, Trouble Follows), when I was growing up and remember being disappointed that is wasn't more like the first movie. I had to shut this "sequal" off after about 20 mins. We're going to double ck. our titles next time!

A Real House Party.......2007-05-27
I saw this program on PBS late one night. Knowing I had to get up early, I couldn't turn it off. Turn on the surround sound and you've got a real house party. Loved every song, just wished it was longer.
Soul Fun!!.......2007-05-12
If you love great, old school soul, you'll love this DVD. Sure, the performers are a little older, but they still are smooth!
The quality of this DVD is top drawer.

A Classic!.......2007-08-15
The funniest movie I've seen in years. I don't usually like "frat boy" humor, but this is the one exception.
Meh..........2007-08-10
Animal House? Get outta here.......2007-05-23
Must be 40 yr olds that think animal house is some devine movie, The younger generation such as I(28)know that Old School is waaaaaaayyyyy better! no contest. i've seen both and I personally Think your a dumbass to think animal house even compares to old school, and someone should take your keyboard away and ban you from amazon! Later Losers.

Caveat Emptor.......2007-09-09
"The Best of Soul Train"? Well, a product description would have been nice. Since there isn't one, hopefully this review will serve as a heads up for the next buyer.
This DVD is, as advertised, clips from the TV show "Soul Train" from the '70's. The DVD is mostly comprised of highlights from the "Soul Train" portion of the show, featuring dancers being spotlighted in the Soul Train line. There are also clips of musical acts.
It's enjoyable to watch... if, and that's a big IF... you don't mind the fact that you're merely watching someone's home videos. Yes... this is not put out by Don Cornelius productions, it is simply a compilation of videos recorded at home and thrown together on a DVD. You can tell by the disc itself that it was burned, not professionally stamped. Another tell tale sign is the broadcast station trademark displayed in the lower right hand corner of nearly every chapter.
Presumably, to compensate for this fact, you are also offered a music CD featuring a mix of mediocre house music.
It is what it is. Buy it, don't buy it, but be warned, it is not a real clear, crisp production one would expect from a TV compilation DVD. Definitely not worth the $20 price tag.
