5 out of 5 stars Excellent Family/Freindship Story.......2007-01-12

I purchased this DVD for my husband who taught elementary school for 35 years. He has always loved Polar Bears and the different books about Lars were read to our sons all the time and now to our grandsons. Both "Papa" and grandsons (ages 5 & 3) watched this DVD three days in a row. It teaches about family and friendship which does not seem to be that important in today's society so much. I would recommend this as a great DVD for all ages.

3 out of 5 stars Cute.......2005-09-06

I gave it to my 3-1/2 yr. old Grandson.......I think it is a little "old for him".....he gets bored 1/2 way through.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Astonishing.......2004-03-30

When I first got this on D.V.D I thought it would be an average cutesy film but I was wrong THIS MOVIE ROCKED one of the best films about friendship I have ever seen in my life BREATHTAKING SCENERY ,MYSTIFYING MUSIC and SOME OF THE COOLEST CHARACTERS YOU COULD RELATE TOO this film has everything but the best thing about this movie was the lesson which was FRIENDS CAN COME IN ALL SHAPES AND SIZES NO MATTER WHAT THE DIFFERENCES ARE everytime I keep watching this film It always makes me cry and it is suitable for all of the family

5 out of 5 stars Magical moments for toddlers.......2004-03-24

My daughter, 2.5 years, absolutely adores this movie, just as much as she loves the books. The plot in itself is not very realistic, but then again childrens animated movies usually aren't; Animals talk, friendships grow between two spieces enemies in nature (an other example Disney's "Fox and Hound") and the locations have all the details wrong... Refreshingly this movie has no violence and lots of sweet moments which makes it suitable for the youngest viewers.

4 out of 5 stars Cute movie.......2004-01-29

Sweet animated film about a baby polar bear's friendship with a baby seal. Despite the "fish eating machine"(which kills No animals), my 4 year old loves the movie. Nice change of pace from Disney animations, which often seem to include violence and death.

As the disclaimer states, this movie may feature Grizzly Adams himself, Dan Haggerty, but it's not about Grizzly Adams. Instead, it's a charming story of a boy moved by the plight of an abused cub kept by an unscrupulous circus. From a Native American trainer troubled by his own collaboration with the enemy, the boy learns of a mystical cave where "the pure of heart" can travel back to a simpler past. He aims to free the bear into the 1841 wilderness, but the cub escapes his leash and the boy meets Haggerty's mountain man alone. Of course, Haggerty agrees to come to the future to set things right. Ninety minutes later, after many scraps with circus villains, the law, and a neighborhood bully, all is well with the good guys, both human and ursine. While the story is a bit cloying at times, it's also funny, good-intentioned family viewing for ages 5 and up. --Kimberly Heinrichs

5 out of 5 stars Grizzly Adams Forever!.......2006-03-19

Where is that magical cave? I'd sure like to find it. Lo, the Native Americans were breathtaking. A good and proper movie for the whole family to watch. Children of today need to watch Grizzly Adams movies.

2 out of 5 stars sappy movie.......2004-07-01

this movie was a bit far fetched. the actress who played the sister over acted. the cop and both indian guys were hot!
a+ for them.even the older american indian was a cutey!

5 out of 5 stars Return to Grizzly Mountain.......2002-08-22

It was a wonderful movie that went back in time to the days of the pioneers were a bear cub could run free and be safe. The scenery was spectacular and majestic and I would reccommeen it to anyone especially a family. The actors were all wonderful and they did a good job. The ending is left open for two sequels going either direction. I am looking forward to future movies from the prodcers.
PS thanks for the wonderful movie. Thank you amazon.com for your couteous services.

5 out of 5 stars Times have changed, the heart remains unchanged.......2002-02-26

A mountain man and modern boy are drawn together through a very special cave linking the present with 1841.

Dan Haggerty, who is best know for the 1970's series The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams, stars in this movie. Though the beginning credits clearly state that this is an original production, and is in no way related to the Grizzly Adams series, you will find many similarities. I rather enjoyed that however.

The Mountain Man lives in a secluded cabin in 1841 in peace with nature and the natives on the vast open land of the Pacific Northwest. The boy lives in harried modern times with his older sister after their parents were killed by drunk drivers-(this is only mentioned not shown).

As bullies pick on Jimmy (the boy) they invite him along to the traveling circus where Jimmy finds a very young bear being mistreated and a friendly caregiver amongst the other cruel circus folk.

Through trial and error, bravery and determination this bear cub will have a peaceful and free life. How does he free the bear? What happens at the cave? Who helps him? Well, I'm not going to give it all away! Watch and see....

The time travel through the cave is done in a pleasant fashion and this is a great movie for the whole family. This left a solid vision in the minds of my little ones about caring for God's creatures.

I was very pleased to see Dan Haggerty reprise his mountain man role and I look forward to other productions with him in it.

This would make a great gift and you can feel good about giving it.

4 out of 5 stars Escape to Grizzly Mountain.......2002-02-25

Great family entertainment! The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the "bad guys" were too exaggerated and silly. It is a warm story with justice and right values portrayed in a way that isn't pushy. A good time.

Grizzly Falls is a gorgeous, hopelessly old-fashioned film that's unlikely to attract the viewership it ought to--none of the characters is particularly witty or clever; special effects, save a few stunts with a bear, are nil; and the irony level is at an all-time low. In other words, prying the kids away from Pokémon to watch this movie may be a challenge, but it's worth the effort. Daniel Clark plays Harry, a lad of around 8 who accompanies Tyrone (Bryan Brown), his thrill-seeking dad, on a mission to the Colorado Rockies, where he intends to be the first to capture a live grizzly. It's the early 1900s, so the means by which Tyrone plans to snare the beast aren't especially humane--at a saloon stop, he hires five tough guys, one with a team of hounds. Then the hunt begins. The hounds' punishing master quickly emerges as a villain; when he and two dogs are mauled by the grizzly, he exacts revenge by caging the bear's cubs. She, in classic righteous-mother mode, retaliates by dragging Harry into the woods. What follows is a desperate chase through beautiful countryside by tireless Tyrone and the blossoming of an impossible boy-bear friendship. Mizzy, as Harry comes to call the bear, protects him from dangers of the wild while leading the boy to her caged cubs, who are traveling east with the ornery houndskeeper. There's a showdown when the animal family is reunited, but Harry and Tyrone extinguish a series of confrontations handily, then move on to cement their own iffy relationship. The surplus of action scenes in this PG-rated movie will wow kids 8 and up, and only jaded viewers will summon the callousness to crack wise about its unapologetic portrayal of blind loyalty and courage at all costs. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars A great movie for all ages!.......2002-04-17

It's a great tale about a young boy who becomes a friendly hostage of a grizzly bear while on a bear hunting expedition with his father in the northwest. Things go awry and the boy is taken by the bear only to be chased by his father and his team of men. The rugged adventure is only the beginning of this entertaining and relationship bonding movie between man and animal. It's perfect for all ages. Kids can watch it as the movie offers good moral values without hard language or adult situations.

5 out of 5 stars A wholesome family movie........2000-09-03

We rented this movie two nights ago, and our whole family thoroughly enjoyed it. It is the story of a boy and his father who go on an expedition in the Rocky Mountains, to catch a grizzly bear and bring it back alive. Along the way, the boy gets separated from his father and ends up with a momma grizzly bear who has taken a liking to him. She takes care of him as they journey together to find her cubs. During this time, the father is on a desperate hunt to find his son. The scenery is beautiful, the animals are wonderful, and the entire movie is excellently produced. The father and son learn a lot about what love and respect for nature really means. I was impressed with this movie. It is rated PG for what they called "nature violence", which is some animal attacks on other animals, and one time where the grizzly attacks one of the men in the hunting party. This may scare small children, but my son is 7 1/2 and he loved it. He was so interested in the story, that he didn't talk all the way through it, he just watched as amazed as I was. I also didn't hear a foul word in the whole movie. There may be a "damn" in there somewhere, but I didn't catch it. I never saw this movie come out in the theaters, but it sure is worth renting. I would recommend it to any family with school age and above. My husband and I liked it just as much as our son. We give it an A+.

Product Description

An amusing and touching film about reinterpreting the idea of "family," Bear Cub tells the engaging story of Pedro (Jose Luis Garcia-Perez), a charming and attractive gay dentist living an active single life in Madrid. He offers to take care of his adorable 9-year-old nephew Bernardo (the remarkable David Castillo) for two weeks while the child's mother travels abroad with her latest "hippie" boyfriend. When Mom suddenly becomes detained in India, however, Pedro must become the boy's caretaker. And to further complicate matters, the boy's grandmother begins a custody battle for the child. Never overly sentimental or sensational, director Miguel Albaladejo (Manolito Four-Eyes) has crafted a funny and charming audience pleaser that inspired the Chicago Tribune to proclaim the film "striking and refreshing."

1 out of 5 stars Drug Cub: Glorification of Drugs.......2007-08-10

    This show could have been so beautiful in the telling of a gay uncle/guardiam and child and I would have rated it 3 stars for the tale if not for the following;

The gay guardian is permissive about drugs, seeing nothing wrong with them personally and the show shows no ill effects of drugs, only positive. He speaks out against his gay friends doing drugs in front of the kid once, but after being chastised by them he forever after allows it, thus sending the message that drugs are cool are good to use. This actually is shown by the child eventually taking drugs himself and all his friends all starting to do it too, again with no ill effects shown, just their euphoria. Am I the only gay man that sees the problem with this highly distructive message?

In addition the gay guardian may be out when it comes to homosexuality but the show suggests you should be secretive and ashamed of everything else, including HIV/AIDS.. and furthermore that you shouldn't tell your partners and that you cannot have a committed partner with AIDS. The uncle /guardian dismisses the one he really loves due to his HIV BUT WITHOUT TELLING HIM WHY, but yet would continue to have casual sex with him. Also by then going and having casual sex in swarmy places before and after he gets worse, he doesn't learn any lessons but instead the film suggests that the HIV/AIDS suffers should simply keeping going and having casual sex, especially when after doing that he gets better. What is this film trying to say? C'mon my fellow gay men, wake up! Don't support something just because it's gay. Make sure it really is good, this film isn't and in fact sets a terrible standard.

3 out of 5 stars Decent transfer and so-so but very rare and serious bear-fetish flick.......2007-01-10

Sometimes it lacks of focus on storytelling but it's interesting and symphatetic enough. I didn't like that its showing gay cruise areas as potential blackmail garden. I can't complain about movie and DVD throughly except very fast-paced authorized subtitles. You can't read them for God's sake! Anyway, if you bought it, you could watch it twice or thrice and catch subtitles. My favorite scene is absolutely fantastic and sexy opening scene, even if it has a body-position error. :)

5 out of 5 stars Stunning, Innovative, Moving and Brilliant - Not for vapid US gays.......2006-07-01

I've read the 22 reviews that exist as of this writing (june 2006). I am so glad the the majority of reviewers have appreciated this amazing film from Spain. There are plenty of spoilers in the reviews and I wouldn't want to rob new viewers of the joy I had in the story unfolding. It was a beautiful, well-acted gem from a country that seems to have it more together than here in the United States (I guess nearly 30 years of Almodovar movies will do that).
This movie is not only worth watching but its worth purchasing.
And as for "robotsloveme" who hated this film -- I can understand why robots love you. Because anyone with a pulse would find you insane -- that's the only way I can understand your SO UTTERLY missing the point of this movie. Was it dubbed wrong for you or something? I'm fluent in Spanish so maybe I got the original voice. But your calling this an insulting film for gays and AIDS is ridiculous. Utterly stupidly ridiculous. It made me think you must have watched a completely different film then the one I own.

For everyone else, trust the absolute gushing love that the GRAND majority of reviewers have bestowed on this special special film.

    5 out of 5 stars Unrated/Rated Confusion.......2006-06-24

I've seen this movie, rented it from my local video store, and loved it very much. I'm assuming since it was a rented copy, what I watched was the rated version. My hats off to Michael Arentz and any other reviewers for telling everyone the difference between versions of movies like this. In a market where the difference between rated and unrated can be anything from a 10 second filler scene to major parts of a movie being cut out, it's often next to impossible to know what your getting. Unfortunately, the editorial section and/or reviews on Amazon rarely tell you the difference between various versions which I believe should practically have it's own section on each of the pages. Now that I know I've probably seen the distributors' presumptuously hacked "version" of this wonderful film, I will be buying the true version which the director intended.

3 out of 5 stars Uneven, unconventional, and really worthy movie about gay parenting.......2006-05-02

Bear Cub (Cachorro) tells the story of a gay Spanish dentist who agrees to take care of his nephew while his hippie sister travels to India. However, when she gets in jail for drug possession, the man is forced to assume responsibility of the child and to battle his nephew's estranged grandma for custody.

The film opens with a pretty explicit credit sequence featuring sex between three gay 'bears' (the hairy, overweight type), but after that the sex quotient dies down to focus on the growing relationship between the protagonist and his 10-year-old nephew. This is the film's strongest aspect: the scenes between the gay man and his nephew ring true and make you care for the characters. Unfortunately, the filmmakers seem so intent in going against stereotype that the main character is given too much baggage to pull of convincingly as a full-fledged character, in spite of the best efforts of the actor. And the filmmakers really screwed things up at the end. Apparently they didn't know how to solve the conflict they set up, so they came up with a really unsatisfying conclusion. However, the first 2/3 of the film are great, its only during the last twenty to thirty minutes that the movie falls apart.

Its good to see a movie where none of the gay characters are obsessed with fashion and going to the gym. But the most interesting aspect of the movie is the film's take on gay parenting. While most U.S. gay media tries to present gay couples as essentially straight clones to convince people that they make good parents, this movie refuses to do that. The main character doesn't really want to be a father (though the child grows on him), turns down the chance to settle down as a couple (with a nice, responsible man he loves), and (despite initial hesitation) refuses to give up his lifestyle (uncommited sex, visits to bathhouses, pickups in bars and under bridges). And yet, he remains an excellent (if realistically imperfect) father figure and a more caring and responsible alternative to the child's mom and grandma.

Be warned that although the sex is tame by foreign movie standards, there are a couple of strong scenes (especially the credit sequence).

    4 out of 5 stars Touching.......2005-10-01

Bear Cub is a touching movie about family with a gay twist. The acting is great and the story is sweet (and sad) The only bad part is the fast speaking Spanish, which makes it hard to read the subtitles.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful, warm, amusing story of alternative "family" .......2005-05-15

"Cachorro" ("Bear Cub") is a touching and original 2004 comedy-drama from Spain. The director/co-writer explains his goals for the film in notes included in the DVD extras, and his idea was quite ambitious: to deviate from the usual type of gay lead character, and give us someone who doesn't have a "queer eye" on fashion, isn't a straight woman's roommate or best friend, has HIV but doesn't have the "victim" mentality about it, doesn't live for the gym or circuit parties, doesn't have problems accepting himself or telling others he is gay, and isn't desperate to get into a monogamous relationship, being pretty happy with his life as it stands. Taking it a step further, the lead character, Pedro, a middle-class dentist, is a "bear" ... part of the gay male subculture of mostly hairy, affectionate, easygoing men that is almost ignored in films and TV shows.

Pedro's world changes when his widowed hippie sister, Violetta, arrives with her 9 year old son Bernando (played wonderfully by young actor David Castillo), whom she has arranged to leave with Pedro while on a two week holiday to India with her boyfriend. Pedro isn't too crazy about the idea, but resigns himself to pretty much put his life on hold for a couple of weeks and play babysitter, but he is soon impressed by his young nephew's energy and positive outlook on life, and a mutual respect and love grows between them. When Violetta gets imprisoned for an indefinite time in India on a drug charge ... to quote the films tagline ... "parenthood gets a bit hairier" when it becomes obvious that their arrangement may become permanent. Pedro's "bear buddies" come around and throw a surprise party to cheer up Bernando after the news about his mother, and one babysits afterward so Pedro can go out cruising and end his sexual fast. Unfortunately, his "night out" sets up a scenario that could take Bernando away from Pedro, and into the hands of his estranged paternal grandmother, whom the boy does not like.

The film is more of a drama than a comedy, but has its amusing moments and situations. It also has nudity and some simulated sex*, but nothing I would consider extraneous to the flow of the story (If you view the DVD extras, you'll see why two scenes were excised, which were a bit too "over the top"). It's in Spanish with English subtitles, which unfortunately are tough to follow because the story is dialogue-intensive and the characters talk very fast (I had to reverse the DVD a few times, then pause to read subtitles that went by too fast to read). Much recommended.

    * Note that the DVD comes in "R" and "Not rated" versions, with the latter being 8 minutes longer.

This mystical film from Danish director Jannik Hastrup tells the story of a polar bear couple who, after losing their stillborn cub, steal a baby boy to raise as their own. Mother bear names him "Little Bear" and, in time, teaches him to survive in the snow, catch fish from the river, and defend himself against wolves. The mother knows, however, that the happiness they share will not last forever--that eventually the boy's father will search for, and find, his son. When the father finally does "rescue" his son, returning him to the company of humans, the boy unwillingly lives with them as a wild misfit who struggles with his dual identity. Finally, he escapes to make a journey to the Spirit of the Mountain to determine who he really is. On one level, this is an enchanting story of a mother's sustaining love, yet the stronger message underscores the fragility of the relationship between man and beast. The stunning animation resembles watercolor paintings in motion, and the haunting musical melodies add a dialogue of their own. (Ages 10 and older) --Lynn Gibson

Beautiful film! My 4 and 5 year olds loved it. I loved the cultural aspect to it that is so hard to find. In reference to the violence, it's not any more violent than Disney's Lion King.

1 out of 5 stars This Storyline Makes No Sense.......2006-06-01

Okay, so Momma polar bear has a stillborn cub at the same time Momma Indigenous Woman has an Indigenous live baby. Momma polar bear is grief-stricken and Papa polar bear is beside himself, because she is in such a great valley of depression. So Papa bear makes a visit to the Indigenous Woman's house and takes Indigenous baby to give to Mama bear.

So the boy gets raised as a polar bear until Papa Indigenous Man hunts down all the polar bears, including Mama Bear (after he leaves Mama bear with the human kid, Papa bear leaves the plot. If he was so concerned about Mama bear, why did he leave?)

Anyway, the boy wants to be a bear, and in the end (SPOILER WARNING!!!!!!) he becomes a bear.

The film never focuses on the fact that the Indigenous mother and father lose their son, and their grief is downplayed. It's all focused on the silly female bear.

In my opinion, it was a poor way for Papa and Mama bear to deal with her grief. But maybe I'm just ignorant on the ways of polar bears.

The animation isn't too happening, either.

5 out of 5 stars Definately not a Disney Move.......2005-05-04

Very surreal and dreamy picture about a boy taken from his parents by grief stricken bears who want to raise him as their son. He grows up, his Father reclaims him, and his struggle to become part of the wild again begins. A fantastic film, probably a little better for older children.

5 out of 5 stars A Mythic Tale about Choices.......2005-02-27

"The Boy Who Wanted to be a Bear" is one of the most engrossing and magical animated feature-length films of recent memory. It's the story of a wild boy caught between two opposing worlds -- the village of men and the land of animals. In each, there are reasons to stay and reasons to leave, but the power of love helps to lead him toward his ultimate decision.

The soundtrack is marvelous (composed by the artist who scored Winged Migration and Himalaya), and helps to give the film some additional spirit. The animation is simple, yet powerful and rich -- the scenes have the youthful look of magic marker imposed over watercolor backdrops, and yet, because of this, the characters feel more real. The pace of the story is perhaps a bit too brisk at times, but overall this is a masterful film. I think that you and your children will enjoy this as much my the folks in our house did.

A word to the wise: purchase the Collector's Edition so that you'll have the option of the English audio track as well as the beautiful, original French audio track. It's a shame when studios consider original languages to be "extras."

4 out of 5 stars Informative with scenic shots, but not IMAX perfect.......2004-12-19

The Yellowstone IMAX DVD does a good job of capturing informative key moments of the Yellowstone history. Beginning with Native Americans to the birth of the first National Park to the scientific exploration, the DVD features a nice collection of scenic shots and historic information.

Having worked in the park, I can easily relate to the historic segments, but to a viewer with no previous knowledge about Yellowstone, the mix of reenacted scenes and contemporary scenic shots can seem a little disjointed at times.

I've read a lot of the negative reviews and wanted to give this movie a little more respect than it received before. The shots are very scenic, the historic information is accurate, and the movie takes me right back to this special place.

Despite my positive review, I only gave it four stars since the advantage of the IMAX format could have been used a lot more frequently. There are some awesome IMAX shots in this movie, such as the flight over a waterfall, but overall such great IMAX scenes are too short and not nearly enough.

    1 out of 5 stars Want a a DVD about Yellowstone? This isn't it.......2003-09-01

This DVD is terrible. There is barely any coverage of the Park. It's mostly a reinactment of Indians settlers around a camp fire or explorers hiking and discovering Yellowstone. The DVD is horribly short too.

    1 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY THIS.......2003-07-02

I buy lots of DVD titles, and this title is the MOST disappointing one. I wasted my money totally. It's seems like everyone agrees with me, so go figure.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of time and money.......2002-12-31

I am a fan of IMAX movies in general, own several and have seen dozens. This one is the worst. I want to see IMAX movies to see stunning images of places that I likely will not ever get to visit in person. For example: in IMAX theatres I have been able to visit, via film, the Russian space station, participate in a climb of Mount Everest, explore underwater caves, etc. THAT'S why I want to see IMAX movies.

The IMAX producers however, have put out several movies which are very short on those stunning images and long on filler material which consists mainly of new age propaganda and historical re-enactments. To some degree one has to put up with this stuff in most IMAX movies, but it can usually be overlooked if you're not interested. However, in Yellowstone, the producers made a short movie of only about 30 minutes and then packed in about 25 minutes of this garbage. The viewer only gets to see the stunning sights of Yellowstone for a few minutes. Those sights are indeed excellent, but its far too little, far too late. This DVD is a total waste of time and money and should be avoided. IMAX Producers: you should be ashamed of yourselves!

1 out of 5 stars One word, "Weak".......2001-11-26

I own and love many other IMAX DVDs, but this one was a huge disappointment. I never thought a director would need "reenactments" in a film about Yellowstone. I expected plenty of shots of geysers, animals, and scenery, they were very few. I was surprised when I watched it and found very little good to say about it, but one star is all I can give it.
