Paul Newman and his Butch Cassidy director, George Roy Hill, made a very original comedy in this 1977 story of an over-the-hill player/coach (Newman) for a lousy hockey team who gets results when he teaches his players to get dirty. One of the most hilariously profane movies ever to come out of Hollywood, this is the kind of film that makes its own rules as it goes along. Newman is very good, and while Hill goes for the gusto in terms of capturing the violence of this world, his instinct for comedy has never been sharper. Great support from Strother Martin, Paul Dooley, and the rest. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Slap shot.......2007-08-13
It is still as funny now as it was the first time I watched it. It's a sport classic. One liners you use every day.
Slapshot.......2007-07-15
One of the best hockey movies ever made. Even those who are not huge hockey fans will find entertaining.
Slap Shot.......2007-07-04
This wildly profane film is consistently funny, and often side-splitting. And Newman's Reggie adds an element of poignancy; he's a perennial rogue with plenty of charm, but hardly a responsible adult, evidenced by his failed marriage to Francine (Jennifer Warren), for whom he still carries a torch. Veteran character actor Strother Martin makes the perfect weasel as smarmy team manager Joe McGrath, and Andrew Duncan is memorable as a radio announcer with the worst toupee on the planet.
Hockey Hilarity.......2007-05-07
Crude in parts, but hilarious bush league hockey! Many "laugh out loud" sceens sure to amuse fans of "ole time hockey." The Hanson brothers add great Canadian humor.
Classic..........2007-04-06
I don't even like hockey, and I love this movie. It's the perfect sports movie - vulgar, funny, with great, quotable dialogue.

Shocking.......2006-12-30
It gets one star because you can't give it any less. Truly, woefully poor. What were they thinking of? Leave this alone and watch the original at least 20 times.
the puzzle pieces aren't as smooth fitting as they need to be.......2006-04-30
This movie has a lot of funny moments. There was a nut joke in there which was funny, but it was so random it did not belong in the movie. It was supposed to make you laugh, but it makes you laugh because it's a dumb joke.
Otherwise, most of the humor that is in it works really well, such as the Ice Breakers getting Viagra or how the Chiefs or "Super Chiefs" ended up with their new jobs.
What really takes the subtstance out of this movie though is that they do not cover the breaching of contracts as if that's not important. Rather than making something come of it, they just suddenly end the movie. Granted, they did not want to extend the movie because there was so much humor to fill up almost two hours, and the majority of the audience for this movie won't be looking for serious matters. But the part they leave out just makes the story incohesive. They make is seem as if the president of Claremont is the only one who could get sued, but what about the president's assistant, the Chiefs/"Super Chiefs", and even the "Ice Breakers?" They all could sue for various other things that happened.
They are trying to mix childish humor in a more adult matter, and because of that I was hoping that instead of an expected happy ending, a certain team would not win in one of the games. Actually, they would've probably been funnier because a team would be so bad that you even wonder how they made it to the NHL in the first place.
Second time around.......2006-03-17
Not quite as good as the original however, even with somewhat of a thin plot, it was entertaining. If you liked the first Slap Shot, I do not think you would be wasting your time veiwing the sequel.

No Too Bad.......2007-01-11
Products came in excellent condition, they just took a little longer than expected to arrive!
My coupon is missing.......2006-10-08
There must a mistake. After seeing #2 (ironically a perfect description), I think the original intention must have been to charge $4 less for the twin pack to offset the extra shipping charges and storage space that #2 incurs. Sadly it's a personal failing of mine to not throw away CD's or DVD's upon which I will never again shine a laser. And I am therefore doomed to have this ...#2 sitting in the back of the drawer of my entertainment center till the day that I die....or at least until I really need the space.
It's not even like it's a separate movie. It's almost as if a basic premise for a movie and some gags we given to two writers, one talented and one not, and #2 is the result of the person who is now running a meth lab. Actually, I know how #1 was written and that's a great part of the whole story. #2 really just seems like it was written by committee.
Still not as horrifying as Caddyshack 2, but I'll never watch it again.
#2 on it's own gets 1 star, but you can only get so harsh when you get the original included with it.
Dissapointment.......2006-06-01
I bought these movies because I once saw a trailer featuring the hansons and it seemed like a fun movie to watch. The original movie is really boring, there are only a couple of scenes worth watching. Slap Shot 2 is probably the worst movie I've ever seen... I'll never see a movie with Stephen Baldwin again.
Thanks Coach!.......2005-03-16
Slapshot is a classic! I didn't think they could even come close with Slapshot 2, but it's not bad at all. We were surprised how good the sequel was.
Can't Beat The Original.......2004-10-02
I love the original Slap Shot to death. Behind all the violence and swearing and sex jokes the movie is truly a classic. (For more details about the original read my review.)
But this review is more about this two movie pack. Therefore I need to focus on the sequal. It has Stephen Baldwin and Gary Busey as the stars. That should tell you something immediately. The plot follows the Charelstown Chiefs (Who still have the notorious Hanson Brothers) as they are sold to Gary Busey's media conglomerate. The plan is turn the Chiefs into the losers of traveling hockey show, like the Harlem Globetrotters. Eventually they get fed up with having to play the patsies and mutiny in a glorious hockey game where they change jerseys. Its like Mighty Ducks 2, but with a whole lot more swearing.
Characters are still pretty generic compared to the cast of the 1977 classic. The Hansons are there, and still very funny. There's a very neurotic goalie, a womanizing player, and the young kid looking to make it to the NHL. In addition, there's the new woman coach, which is a bit of a reference to the fact that the original was written by a woman. There are also several referances to classic lines from the original, like the Pinwheel and several of the Hanson's lines are repeats. (But still funny)
Main difference between the movies: Slap Shot was more about the psychos who played the sport back in the day. Not so much about what went on in a game, but what is making these guys act like this off the ice. That's the reason for introducing the opposing players from the original. Ogie Oglethorpe, "Dr. Hook" McCracken, "Poodle" Lucie, and all their backstories were what the movie was about. The players not the play. Slap Shot 2 takes a different approach. There's lots of real looking hockey in the movie. That's where the main action happens. Their opponents are "snot-nosed punks" who don't believe in the old style hockey that the Chiefs believe in. That's the real reason why this movie can't hold a candle to the original. The heart is not there.
So this DVD det gets three stars. The only reason I won't score lower is because it comes with the first movie. It just gets dragged down by Stephen Baldwin and Slap Shot 2. Save some money and buy the original on its own.
