Kate Winslet operates at a galaxy-class level in Little Children, Todd Field's gratifyingly grown-up look at unhappy suburbia. Winslet is magnificent, in an Oscar-nominated performance, as a stroller-pushing mom who becomes attracted to a passive househusband (Patrick Wilson). Their slow-burning infidelity (Field wisely allows time to pass in this unhurried film) is contrasted with a more sensational subplot, about a convicted pedophile (Jackie Earle Haley, also Oscar nominated) returning to the neighborhood to live with his mother (Phyllis Somerville). Field, who brought his civilized approach to In the Bedroom, uses a deliberately literary style here, including a device with a narrator who sounds as though he's sitting at our side as he reads from Tom Perotta's novel. (The narrator is a superb touch--his cultivated voice distances us from the sloppy passions of the characters.) The film's biggest miscalculation is a self-appointed neighborhood vigilante (Noah Emmerich) determined to make life miserable for the pedophile. But Wilson is appropriately nebulous, Jennifer Connelly solid as his wife, and Haley (child star of the Bad News Bears movies), as the creepy, childlike molester, found himself rediscovered after a long career layoff. There's decent acting here, but Winslet is in a zone of her own, with so much emotional honesty and subtlety of expression that she transforms a good movie into a must-see. --Robert Horton

Description

4 out of 5 stars I Really Liked This Film, But..........2007-09-04

Can Hollywood stop with the obsessive morality messages already? My God, people go on about how liberal (and most actors are) Hollywood supposedly is, but constantly every film that comes out with a controversial premise ("The Good Girl", "Bridges of Madison County", and this one with adultery; "Knocked Up" with abortion and unplanned pregnancy) winds up with a finish that even Falwell could love. In the case of the adultery films, the woman who has been suffering in a boring, loveless marriage to a guy who is now in the role of her brother with no blood ties meets an exciting, passionate man who is everything of which she has dreamt. She falls madly in love with this man, very seriously (to the point of packing everything she values and leaving a "Dear John" letter to hubby) contemplates leaving her "picture perfect" but otherwise dead relationship, but in the end she stays with schmucko and the kids and remains (much like the Aniston film's title) the long suffering "Good Girl". I'm sorry, but my parents stayed together in such a marriage and everyday my father reminds her of her dalliance (even though it happened decades ago). These films do not show that side of the families "sticking it out". It doesn't show the emotional (and often physical) abuse that often follows when a man finds out that his wife has cheated on him. When a woman (or a man, for that matter) cheats, it usually (but not always) means that her/his emotional needs are not being met in the marriage. It also can mean that the marriage, as a passionate relationship between two adults, is dead and if the two remain together, it is simply to co-parent the children (which the children will know, by the way, and it scars them just as much, if not more, than if the parents went their separate ways and found happiness with others). I honestly enjoyed this film; I did. The acting was first rate, the dialogue was well written, and it was a very interesting peak into what "Desperate Housewives" should had been about. However, just as a note to Hollywood: could you please, please have a film in which the depressed, lonely, suffering wife actually runs off with her lover and actually finds happiness (instead of playing the martyr or killing herself a la Anna Karenina)? Is that really too much to ask, instead of these Sunday school lessons that you've been pushing on us since the invention of moving pictures? Loving relationships can (I know that the Moral Majority will devour me for saying this, but oh well) and do spring from affairs. Please present one film with that premise and I promise that the whole of Western civilization will not fall.

2 out of 5 stars "You are nervous, aren't you?".......2007-08-23

Some people have criticized me for liking long, slow moving movies, such as "Lost in Translation". In the past, I have also enjoyed movies that focus on social commentary. So this film, that shows the lives of a group of individuals living in suburbia, that counts with a great cast, and that was nominated for three academy awards, looked like a dream come true. Sadly, this production is so tedious that it almost put me to sleep.

Sarah (Kate Winslet) is a mother, a not very good one if I might add, and the wife of a boring pornography-loving executive. She has started going to the park with her daughter and a few other women with kids, and one day she meets Brad (Patrick Wilson). He is referred to by the other mothers as the prom king, and goes to the park with his harlequin-hat-loving son. Brad is married to a gorgeous filmmaker and is struggling with his career choice. He is supposed to be studying for the bar exam, for the third time, but he does not have the drive to do it. Instead of going to the library and study he goes to watch the skaters have fun and dreams of joining them.

When the dissatisfied Sarah and Brad meet, there is an instant connection, which slowly develops into an affair. The pace is slow and uninteresting, and the constant narration using voice-over gets old pretty quickly. There are some added elements that bring some complexity to the mix, like a pervert living in the neighborhood and having everyone on edge, and a cop that has issues dealing with his past and present. But that's it, there is not much more to this movie.

The main problem I have with this film is that the flow of the story was not able to catch my attention, and therefore, the few plusses, like the acting, were lost in a morass of boredom. I was extremely disappointed, since this was highly recommended by several of my friends. I may be in the minority for disliking this one, but in my opinion, there is not much to like.

5 out of 5 stars The best film of 2006! And one of my new favorites..........2007-08-22

This is one of the most amazing, powerful films that I have seen in a long time! I doubt that there will be anything quite like it in the years to come. Every performance is amazing. Phyllis Somerville was robbed of an Oscar nod for her awesome performance as Ronnie's mother. This is a film about adults who just don't want to grow up, hence the title. The book was equally amazing. I love this film! It's the best film about suburbia ever. I love it because it is honest, and at it's heart is a message of redemption, forgiveness, and hope. See it. NOW.

3 out of 5 stars Well-Acted but Painful to Watch.......2007-08-19

I thought the acting was pretty impressive, especially the actor who played the pedophile. But the constant narration/voice over in this movie ruined it for me. In my opinion, if you can't translate a book into a screenplay without constant narration to fill in the blanks, then maybe you shouldn't make the movie. When the deep voice of the narrator first came on, I seriously thought it was supposed to be a joke. But 20 minutes later I realized this was going to go on throughout the whole movie. I managed to block it out after a while and focus on the plot. All in all, a well-acted and filmed movie, but still not enjoyable to watch. And the semi-redemptive ending did not ring true to me. It seemed forced and out of touch with the tenor of the rest of the movie.

5 out of 5 stars What American Beauty wants to be when it grows up!.......2007-08-11

I found American Beauty a bit overwrought and inauthentic in terms of how it cast it's urbanely judgemental eye on suburbia. But this movie? Never for a moment does it feel condescending to it's characters. In fact, while watching it I couldn't believe I kept thinking "wow, she's just like Andrea from down the street-geesh, he's just like Martha's husband." This film got "it" right.

My favorite thing about this movie is just when you think it's either going to veer off into something overly self serious or self indulgent, you are quickly served with a "aha-fooled you!" And in the most insightful ways too-just when y ou think your characters have totally lost it or something horrible is going to happen, something ELSE mundane actually weighs everything down and the characters are grounded back in reality whether they like it or not! Isn't that how life is though?

Patrick Wilson is freaking pitch perfect as Brad and deserved an Oscar nom for this, and Kate is a revelation as usual.

After I Spy and before The Cosby Show, Bill Cosby left his own inimitable mark on the arena of stand-up comedy in this live concert showcasing his down-to-earth observations on the rigors and joys of family life. Cosby, using only a microphone and a chair, discusses his take on raising kids and the illogical nature of children and the futility of trying to argue with a child that in the end may be smarter than you. Notable highlights include Cosby's ruminations on the meaning of the all-purpose phrase "I don't know" to kids, and Cosby describing the effect raising children has on his wife Camille's mental state and the pitch of her voice. Containing the basis for the humor of his long-running situation comedy, Bill Cosby: Himself is a polished, occasionally insightful, and frequently hilarious night of comedy from one of the longtime masters of the form. --Robert Lane

Description

One of America's most popular comedians, Bill Cosby treats his fans to a funny, satirical and heart-warming concert at Toronto's Hamilton Place Performing Arts Center. His material ranges from marriage and the unending trials of parenthood, to the side-splitting antics of the very young, and a hilarious encounter with a dentist's drill and needle. Insightful and witty, this highly entertaining film is a rare cinematic treat, filled with all the spontaneity and electricity that only a live performance can provide.

5 out of 5 stars Still Funny.......2007-08-31

The topics of parenthood, going to the dentist and over-imbibing are timeless subjects and Bill Cosby's performance is just as funny now as it was when this was first produced. I remembered this show as I heard my daughter repeating "come here," to her 2-year-old. I ordered it and hoped that my memory was correct and that she would find it as funny as I did. We both cried we laughed so hard.

If you need a good belly laugh (or a little perspective on parenting), this is the ticket.

5 out of 5 stars A True Comedian.......2007-07-12

Today comics like to use alot of foul langauge you know F this and F that. But there is one true comedian who I've never heard swear and that's Bill Cosby. This DVD is great for the whole family. The first time I saw it was with my parents. It's a instant classic. And what's great is everything he talks about is true. Two skits I highly recommende are the drinking and dentist skits you'll find yourself on the floor in seconds because you can't breathe from laughing so much!

5 out of 5 stars The best medicine to anything.......2007-06-30

It's really very simple. I bought this on laser disc about 18 years ago. It's a rosseta stone in my family. We all know it by heart, can qoute almost any line, and still we watch it. Everytime we watch it it's the same routine where we have to stop a few times because someone's belly is aching already from laughing, or someone's bladder is close to bursting. Get this and you will have the perfect medicine to anything. No need for prozac anymore.

Everybody important from the first film, including the writing-directing team of Charles Shyer and Nancy Meyers, regroups for this sequel involving a pair of pregnancies. Steve Martin's patriarch has a crisis when his married daughter (Kimberly Williams) is with child, and an even bigger one when his middle-aged wife (Diane Keaton) announces that another bambino is on the way. Martin Short is more effectively used this time around (he played the wedding coordinator in the first film), and while this movie's inevitable climax has both women giving birth on the same chaotic night, the overall effect of the film is less contrived than its predecessor. --Tom Keogh

Description

Expect crowd-pleasing entertainment when Steve Martin (PARENTHOOD), Diane Keaton (LOOK WHO'S TALKING NOW), and Martin Short (CAPTAIN RON) return in this hilarious sequel to the comedy smash FATHER OF THE BRIDE. So when his daughter and his wife Nina (Keaton) both announce they are pregnant, George finds himself in one outrageous situation after another, desperately trying to recapture the wild and crazy days of his youth! You'll love every star-filled minute of FATHER OF THE BRIDE, PART II -- the riotous comedy hit that delivers double the fun and twice the laughs!

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-06-10

This is one of the best sequels I have ever seen. It is funny and at the same time very sweet and touching. Steve Martin is great as the unwilling soon-to-be-father/grandfather. The rest of the cast is as good as they were in the first part. Definitely worth a watch by all daughters who have a very loving and protective father!

3 out of 5 stars Is Great!.......2007-04-10

I really like the 2 won better but the other one you need to see first!

1 out of 5 stars The first one is much better..........2006-10-12

I was very disappointed in this movie. As much as I love Steve Martin, this movie just didn't do anything for me. I had to make myself watch it in its entirety. It was too unrealistic; a mother and daughter being pregnant at the same time, giving birth on the same exact day, in the same hospital across the hall from one another. Give me a break. And what are the chances of you buying your house back one day after you sell it by just one stoke of a pen by simply reaching into your pocket and whipping out a $100,000 check? Yeah, I see that happen all the time. And gee whiz, Annie's husband walks into the hospital after a business trip in Tokyo just in the nick of time, how convenient. And is it too much to ask to have just one movie where the pregnant woman gets a normal ride to the hospital? The wild ride to the hospital scene is played (Look Who's Talking?, Nine Months). And just what kind of job did the father of the bride have? A baby suite? How fortunate we all would be if we could toss thousands of dollars on a single room in a house that's only going to be used for a couple of months. Now that's what I call living! And Franck, not only does he coordinate weddings but he throws in baby showers here and there as well. Oh, and he also designs baby suites. Maybe he does barmitzvahs too. This movie would have been a lot better if it only focused on Annie being pregnant. The Banks having 3 children spread out across 3 different generations was a bit much. "Is that your grandbaby?" "No, that's my daughter." "Hey, is that your sister?" "No, that's my aunt." "Hey, it was nice meeting your brother." "Are you kidding me, that's my nephew!" There were no funny moments in this movie and seeing Steve Martin as a brunette, even if it was only briefly, was just painful. His hair has been gray ever since I can remember and he should keep it that way at all times. Do yourself a favor and pass on this movie. The first one is much better. If I could have given it a zero star I would have. Sorry Steve, I still love you but the next time I want to see you in a good movie, I'll just pull out "The Jerk","Parenthood" or "Housesitter". As a matter of fact, I'm planning to take this movie to the Thrift store the next time I donate.

1 out of 5 stars Narrow View of Normal.......2006-09-18

What's wrong with raising a baby in a beach house? Am I the only person who doesn't live in a mansion? Do you have to be rich to be happy?

This movie, and the original remake (since that's what these films are) tell a lot of lies about what people should expect life to be. Therefore, they are not fun. All the humor evaporates when you realize it is attempting to tell you "your life should be this way" or you're wrong if it is not. Unfortunately, not everyone has a picture perfect life.

5 out of 5 stars Didn't Think It Could Get Any Better!.......2006-09-13

I remember watching "Father of the Bride" over and over again growing up...dreaming of my own wedding! It was just one of those movies that you can never really get tired of. I was excited when they made "Father of the Bride 2" , but I really didn't have high hopes for it because I thought there was no way it could compete with the first...boy was I wrong. This movie is just as great as the first. With mother and daughter having a baby at the same time and all the same great characters back from the first movie...there was never a dull moment! If you liked the first you should love this movie!

When Elvis-like rock & roll star Conrad Birdie is drafted into the military, the teen nation is united by a contest in which the winner bestows a farewell kiss upon their idol while on the Ed Sullivan Show. Ann-Margret (in her film debut) is the lucky little lady from Sweet Apple, Ohio, who wins the contest, much to the chagrin of her steady beau (Bobby Rydell) and miserable parents (Paul Lynde and Mary LaRoche). Dick Van Dyke and Janet Leigh are an older couple kept from marrying by his meddlesome mother, played to the hilt by Maureen Stapleton. Lightweight but fun, this features an exuberant soundtrack with such memorable ditties as "Put on a Happy Face" and "Kids" and the title track. This is a much better choice than the lackluster, 1995 made-for-TV version. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Musical that holds up well.......2007-09-05

Ann-Margret runs away with this hit 60's musical. Perfect casting at its best; it's easy to believe her as Kim, a teenager in love with Hugo (Bobby Rydell) who also swoons over Conrad Birdie (Jesse Pearson), a thinly veiled version of Elvis. Although it's hard to imagine the hysteria that Elvis generated when he was drafted, it is not important to be aware of that to enjoy the take-off this musical provides. Paul Lynde and Dick Van Dyke turn in solid performances; Maureen Stapleton provides the hilarious comic relief as the mother from hell. Janet Leigh does a great job as Van Dyke's love interest, however, her singing is somewhat of a weak link (but her dancing more than makes up for it!). Many reviews bash the movie for being too different from the stage production; although it is different in some ways, it more than stands on its own. The camera work, staging, choreography, and performances are all top-notch. A nice piece of nostalgia that still provides great entertainment today.

3 out of 5 stars Hello Again, Birdie.......2007-05-08

More than 40 years after first viewing in theatres, this is still a delightful escape with a trip down memory lane. Music and lyrics are classics. Ann-Margret and Janet Leigh display dancing and singing talent that is often forgotten, with excellent support work from Dick Van Dyke, Paul Lynde, Bobby Rydell and Maureen Stapleton. The times certainly changed after this period of adolescence, but Bye Bye Birdie took us back to an age of naivety where nothing bad was ever going to happen to us. Good social comment of the time.

4 out of 5 stars Great family movie.......2007-01-11

My 11 year old son is trying out for a part in a local production of "Bye Bye Birdie" so I purchased this DVD so we could both get an idea of what the movie/play is all about and get a flavor for the musical productions. Even though this movie was made in the 1960's, it was very entertaining for both of us. The movie is good clean family entertainment and is well worth purchasing to have as a part of our family movie library.

5 out of 5 stars BYE BYE BIRDIE.......2006-11-10

EVEN IN THE BEGINNING ANN MARGARET WAS WONDERFUL.. BOBBY WAS JUST SO GREAT LOOKING (STILL IS. THIS MOVIE WAS REALLY FUNNY AND WILL BE AROUND FOR A LONG TIME TO COME!!

4 out of 5 stars Just a good old fashioned goofy musical.......2006-09-01

I watched this recently and realized I had forgotten about a lot of it. I still really think Ann Margret was dazzling. and absolutely perfect for the role of Kim. I didn't care much for Janet Leigh in this one, it must have been the black hair -- and I don't think when I saw this as a teen that I even realized she was supposed to be LATINO. O-kay . . . .

I think the biggest surprise in this film was Bobby Rydell, the early 60s teen idol (who could actually sing) -- he was amazing as Hugo. Wow! He just flowed thru that thing like he'd been doing it all his life .. . but then, I don't remember him ever doing it again . ..? I know he still tours, with Frankie Avalon and Fabian I think, and he looks really DIFFERENT -- I mean, he looks an awful lot like George W. Bush nowadays. Weird. Anyhow, I thought he was perfect for his part as well, as for the rest, some of it got to be a bit much -- esp. Paul Lynde and his whiny sarcasm (how much of that can you take?) and that Ed Sullivan skit was just silly. But, I love the Kim/Hugo/Birdie dance in the soda shoppe, that makes the film, I think. Watch it with your teenagers, if you can corral them for a while.

When a movie sits on the shelf for a year, the consensus is that it must be a dud. Formerly known as Fast Track, Jesse Peretz's third and most commercial feature may not be a dud, but it comes perilously close. With the success of Garden State, it was inevitable that The Ex would be marketed as a romantic comedy, except it isn't. Sure, there's romance between Tom (Zach Braff) and his pregnant wife, Sofia (Amanda Peet, Igby Goes Down), but this is mostly a black comedy about the ad game, like How To Get Ahead in Advertising. After their baby is born, Sofia puts her legal career on hold to care for little Oliver, but then Tom loses his job as chef (Paul Rudd cameos as his boss), so they move from New York to Ohio where her father, Bob (Charles Grodin in fine fettle), secures Tom a gig as assistant associate creative at his New Age-style ad agency. Their money woes are a thing of the past, but new problems await. The biggest is creative director Chip (Jason Bateman), who briefly dated Sofia in high school. A longtime wheelchair user, Chip resents Tom for stealing his limelight--and for his relationship with Sofia. So, he sets out to turn everyone against his competition (their co-workers include SNL's Fred Armisen and Amy Poehler). Because Chip has such a genial manner, Tom's complaints strike others as unjustified paranoia. By the time he figures out a way to pay Chip back, it's hard to care after all the pratfalls and bits of funny business that fall flat more often than not. There are worse ways to spend 89 minutes, but any random episode of Scrubs or Arrested Development offers more laughs. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description

Tom (Braff) and Sofia (Peet) have just had their first baby and that means it is time for Tom to grow up. But, when Tom goes to work for his father-in-law, his new boss Chip (Bateman) seems to have it out for him. Tom soon discovers that Chip is still carrying a flame for Sophia from their high school days. Now, Chip will stop at nothing to see Tom out of the company and out of Sophia's life. As the two go head to head, Tom must expose Chip's dirty tricks and push him out of the picture forever.

4 out of 5 stars Wasn't That Bad.......2007-09-10

I don't know why there are so many negatives for this movie. Sure it wasn't the most original story idea and some gags do fall flat, it is populated by a ton of very funny people who really know how to make you laugh. I think Jason Bateman steals the movie as the wheelchair jerk. I never saw this in the movies, so I don't know the difference between the unrated and pg-13 versions of the movie. I know I had a good time, laughed out loud a couple of times and enjoyed the movie.

3 out of 5 stars THIS ISN'T THE VERSION OF THE MOVIE YOU ARE WANTING!!!.......2007-09-08

THIS IS THE "UNRATED" CUT OF THE MOVIE WHICH HAS MOST OF THE FUNNY PARTS CUT OUT. YOU WANT TO BUY THE ONE THAT IS THE "FULL SCREEN EDITION" WHICH IS THE ONE IN THE THEATER.

The unrated version has MOST of the funny parts cut out and the ending isn't the same or as good. i wish i read the reviews for this version before i bought it but i didnt. so hopefully i have saved yall from buying the less funny version of the movie like i did.

BUT the full screen edition IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!!! DEFINITELY BUY THE FULL SCREEN EDITION!!!

2 out of 5 stars Pathetic!.......2007-09-08

As much as I love Zach Braff and Amanda Peet, I really thought this movie was a bust. I would have given it 1 star except for the two of them. This is a very dark "comedy," and most of the movie is rather depressing as Braff goes from one predicament to another. You feel sorry for him rather than wanting to laugh. Jason Bateman's character is really too diabolical for a comedy, and the constant pratfalls are just not funny. The movie seems to miss its beat somehow. The concept is sort of cute, a guy whose boss just happens to be his wife's ex, but the movie is more like a foray into an evil and disturbed alternate universe than the side-splitting hilarity I was expecting. I would not recommend this movie.

1 out of 5 stars Awful DVD release!.......2007-08-28

My 1 star rating is for the unrated version of this DVD release, and not for the theatrical version of the movie itself. This is BY FAR NOT the funny movie that was in the theatre. This version has a lot of stuff cut out, including funny stuff and material that helped with character development. Because of this, the unrated version is a chore to watch. It is actually 5 minutes shorter than the PG-13 version available. IF YOU SAW THE EX IN THE THEATRE AND LOVED IT, YOU WANT TO PURCHASE THE PG-13 RATED VERSION, WHICH IS EXACTLEY THE MOVIE THAT WAS SHOWN IN THE THEATRES, (which I give 4 stars).

1 out of 5 stars Nothing like the theater version.......2007-08-27

I was excited to buy the DVD, because the version I seen in the theater was funny. The DVD cuts all the funny parts, I don't know if it is because it is an unrated evrsion, but I am not going to waste my money to buy the rated version to see if that is the one I seen in the theaters. Do yourself a favor and don't bother getting this, hopefully a theater version will be released.

Click is a high-concept, low-brow variation on It's a Wonderful Life that will have Adam Sandler fans laughing even as it leaves Frank Capra spinning in his grave. In their third collaboration (after The Wedding Singer and The Waterboy, Sandler and director Frank Coraci aim at the lowest common denominator and consistently hit their target, from scary casting (David Hasselhoff as Sandler's shallow, sexist boss; Sean Astin in a tight red Speedo) to a rancid menu of fart jokes, fat jokes, oversexed dogs, and other attempts at humor that rarely rise above the level of grade-school pranks. Sandler's "family comes first" sentiment somehow manages to survive the onslaught of rude, crude attitude that Sandler brings to his role as Michael Newman, a workaholic architect who learns the hard way that, well, family comes first. This happens after Newman gets a magical remote control from Morty (Christopher Walken, the film's one and only highlight), an eccentric oddball in the "Beyond" section of a Bed, Bath & Beyond store who's a devilish version of Wonderful Life's benevolent guardian angel. But Sandler's no James Stewart as he uses his techno-marvel (complete with a DVD-like "life menu") to fast-forward through his life's most unpleasant moments, only to realize that he's been missing lots of good stuff, too. With Kate Beckinsale as Newman's neglected wife, impressive older-age make-ups by Rick Baker and a lot of digital wizardry to beef up the humor, Click won't disappoint Sandler's established fan base, and its $40 million opening weekend offered ample proof that Sandler's box-office clout remains remarkably consistent.--Jeff Shannon

Product Description

A harried workaholic, Michael Newman (Adam Sandler) doesn't have time for his wife (Kate Beckinsale) and children, not if he's to impress his ungrateful boss and earn a well-deserved promotion. So when he meets Morty (Christopher Walken), a loopy sales clerk, he gets the answer to his prayers: a magical remote that allows him to bypass life's little distractions with increasingly hysterical results. But as Michael gleefully mutes, skips and scans past his family and his friends, the remote gradually takes over his life and begins to program him, in this fast, funny and out-of-control comedy adventure.

4 out of 5 stars Funny & Touching - A Good Combination.......2007-09-12

This was a funny and - near the end - a touching movie. That's a nice combination to have. My only complaint is that it certainly isn't "family fare" for a nice story and should have been rated "R," not PG-13. There's simply too much sexual material (and and f-word) for PG-13. With some editing, this could have been a great story for everyone.

However, for us adults who like to laugh, there is plenty in here to do that. The jokes come pretty fast, right from the get-go. The premise would good: with a (television-like) remote control, you could control your life. You could fast-forward through all the unpleasant scenes in your life, or freeze frame something that is happening now, or you could go back into time with your life. It all sounds good, but as our main character "Michael Newman" (Adam Sandler) found out, it's not so cool. That's a key message here, too, that avoiding the bad things is not necessarily what's best for us. The major message, however, was that spending time with your family is more important than putting your job ahead of them, as far as priorities go.

That theme leads to some touching scenes in the final 30 minutes of this comedy. As funny as this film is, you would be hard-pressed not to have some tears in your eyes at some point near the end of this film.

3 out of 5 stars Kind Of Sad, When You Cut Through It.......2007-09-11

When I watch something with Adam Sandler in it, I want it to be kinda stupid and kinda crude with just a smidgen of goodness sewn into the script somewhere along the line. I thought I was getting that in Click and maybe I did a little, but not as much as you would expect. This is not Happy Gilmore. This is not The Wedding Singer. This is Click, Adam Sandler on Prozac. Very formulaic. Almost seemed written to where anyone could have played Sandler's part.

Michael Newman is a ditzy workaholic (God this has been done so many times before!) who thinks that he must put his job before his gorgeous wife and his two children to get ahead and make everything perfect. Juggling work and swim meets and the day to day rigors of life, Michael heads to Bed, Bath & Beyond to pick up a universal remote for the television. When he enters the Beyond section of the store he runs into the wonky-haired Morty (Christopher Walken) who gives him a prototype remote control to manage everything. Literally. Everything. The remote works on Michael's life. He can pause, mute, rewind and fastforward everything. Wow. Only a few million problems. Morty (Mortis) is the Angel Of Death. And having the ability to alter your life has some serious repercussions. At one point, and this actually makes the film utterly ridiculous, Sandler's character fastforwards through sex with Kate Beckinsale. Yeah. Right! IDIOT! Well, one thing leads to another and the remote starts to automatically fastforward though everything that should be improtant. Newman winds up a fat, lonely, divorced old man who has achieved success that he can hardly remember attaining. Sad. Yeah. Jeez.

There are a few fatal flaws in Click that make it subpar. One, the writing, hell, even the casting is off. Sure, Christopher Walken plays a great weird character, but he looks like Robin Williams in Flubber. Secondly, Kate Beckinsale and Adam Sandler, as a married couple? What universe is this? Kate Beckinsale is absolutely stunning. Adam Sandler is Forrest Gump. And why are their children pretty much the same age? Adam is mean-spirited in this just one too many times and the whole "I hate my job but I've gotta succeed for the family" scenario is downright cliche. Most people hate their jobs! Duh! Life sucks, get a helmet! You don't sacrifice your family for money, everyone knows that, but it takes Sandler the entire movie and his entire life to realize that. All in all the ending before the actual ending is way too depressing for an Adam Sandler movie and then they wipe it out as a dream. Anyone see the flaws here? My creative writing teacher back in high school told us that if we ever ended a story like that she would beat us about the head and neck. Duh! This is simple Hollywood tripe with a lot of special effects thrown in and a very mundane storyline. Not unwatchable, but pretty f*cking stupid, if you want to know. I guess I'll stick with Happy Gilmore and The Wedding Singer for my Adam Sandler.

Deal with it!

2 out of 5 stars Rent it instead.......2007-06-23

This movie started out well enough but turned to multiple crude jokes that got tiresome really quickly. Having dogs humping a stuffed duck and even Sandler once (in shadow)during sex with his wife, definitely does not make this family movie material. As everyone has mentioned, Click does in the end, mirror the message from It's A Wonderful Life -- and for that reason, it is worth a rental. Watch it with your favorite workaholic who is missing out on family.

The casting was great. Julie Kavner and Henry Winkler were perfect as the parents and the make up department did a great job of making them appear younger and older. David Hasselhoff and Sandler's crew of regulars were totally funny in their parts but as much as I love Adam Sandler, Click was disappointing. If it had a stronger script, it would have worked.

5 out of 5 stars Humor and a lot of heart.......2007-06-10

Sandler continues to select comendies that almost always leaves the audience with something to think about. This movie is probably best described as a modern version of it's a wonderful life and it's message is just a poignant as Jimmy Stewart pleading that he "wants to live". Many can relate to living on auto-pilot, wanting to fast-forward through struggles and fights, but it often those things which build character. A good movie with a great message. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A Thinker.......2007-06-03

Michael is an architect, married to a great gal and they have 2 adorable children. There is one problem however, Michael never has time for his wife, children or parents. He is desperately trying to move ahead in his job, for their good, or is it? One day he goes to the store to buy a univeral remote and meets Morty who gives him one that will change his life. This remote Michael soon learns is to be used on his life. Don't like something that is hapening, fast forward. don't want to hear someone? Put it on mute! Wow....this should be great, or is it? Soon Michael is at the end of his life and perhaps from the use of the remote Michael realizes what is important and what is not.
I really liked this movie because it brought out so many things we all share in life. The responsibility to give our family all that we feel they need and yet showing perhaps it isn't what they need after all. It's very funny at times, yet sobering and the ending had me in tears, but that was a good thing. I really believe you will enjoy this movie and it will leave you perhaps a little wiser.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining!.......2007-09-14

I thought the movie was cute, and with like all of Tyler's movies there is always an underlining message. I will continue to support his movies at the theatre as long as show my folks in a real and positive light.

I thought the movie ended too abruptly, and implied that they lived happily ever after. I always enjoy gazing upon the fine manhood Idris Alba.

Another problem I had with the story is that two people so very different actually getting together. I thought that that part of the story line was a little unrealistic.

It is me or was there an underlying message that encourge accomplished black women should take on men like Monty?

4 out of 5 stars CUTE AS EXPECTED.......2007-09-02

I mean come on this is Tyler Perry... we all know he is not a award winning writer. Yes his actors over act at times but it's the message that is in the movie. He reaches so many people so that's what is important.

Unfortumately there are all types of people in this world & mothers like the girls mom do exhist, the heartless Drug dealers do exhist, Women who can't find a good man definately do exhist & fathers who want the best for their kids do exhist...

I am a little bored with the thug/drug dealer dude. Must be a cousin lol.

I think that this movie was pretty good. atleast the men were not beating on women. I hope he continues to make movies. Practice makes perfect.

2 out of 5 stars Two stars -Shallow work that looks and sounds Authentic .......2007-09-01

The actors try hard but the themes of Tyler Perry's writing are sooo simplistic, heavily handed and full of cliches that I emphathize with their efforts. I know he's been financially successful with his formulaic work but Perhaps he underestimates the sophistication of his potential audience. Too bad, that as a black woman, I find much of his message insulting. I understand that the so called positive here is in informing us ( who ?) about the existence of responsible, working class black fathers. But it's countered by the same, old tired cliche that well educated, professional black women are bitter, lonely, singles who are so desperate for a man ( sex) that they will SETTLE for ANY NICE ( meaning poor, blue collar, working class) guy. Thus, although he maybe inarticulate, and unsophisticated and as a couple they have nothing in common, she will fall madly in love. Why? because she's uptight, and he's loose, available and not a lowlife. Honestly, how WILL they make a life together after they get out of bed. Oh, I forgot, this highly accomplished woman will also be thrilled to support his efforts to establish his own business ( so he doesn't have to endure the humliation of doing menial work.) And she will welcome his kids and gain pleasure from simple leisure activities in the 'hood. Give me a break !

3 out of 5 stars It Was Just Okay. . .(2.5 Stars).......2007-08-27

. . .But it could've been much better if more thought was put into it. I think Tyler Perry was reading a few back issues of Essence magazine and was inspired to write the film. The plot was predictable and almost every character was a walking stereotype. I could've wrote a better screen play. And having Tracee Ellis Ross in the movie made it seem like I was watching "Girlfriends: The Movie." Shoot, Tyler Perry might've been insired by the show "Girlfriends" as well. Other than that this movie was watchable, but lacked *serious* depth.

2 out of 5 stars Noble intentions, weak execution.......2007-08-17

**1/2

No one could ever accuse Tyler Perry of being the soul of subtlety - either as a filmmaker or as a storyteller. His set-ups are often painfully contrived, with characters who are two-dimensional and stereotypical, and messages that are pat and overly simplistic, to put it mildly. Yet, in this era when too many black characters are either rappers, street thugs, prostitutes or drug dealers, Perry speaks to audiences yearning to see a more positive vision of the African-American experience portrayed on screen. That's certainly an admirable goal, but the problem is that Perry himself is not above indulging in many of those very same stereotypes if, in so doing, it helps him to get his message across.

In "Daddy's Little Girls," the first ethnic stereotype Perry admirably endeavors to shatter is that of the absent or indifferent urban black father. His protagonist, Monty, is a divorced dad of three who works as an auto mechanic in a garage run by none other than Louis Gossett Jr. Monty's ex has pretty much flown the coop, leaving the kids to be raised by her mother who is currently dying of lung cancer. After the woman's death, Jennifer decides she now wants to raise the children, even though she's living with a gangsta' boyfriend who's so low he even sells drugs to the kids in the neighborhood schoolyard. This sets up a fierce custody battle between Monty and Jennifer with the three girls caught in the middle.

As stated previously, it is commendable that Perry wishes to make Monty a model for young male viewers to emulate, but in order to establish Monty's bona fides as a caring father, the filmmaker for some reason has found it necessary to ratchet up the mother's vileness past the point of believability. In fact, Jennifer makes Cinderella's evil stepmother look like June Cleaver and Carol Brady in comparison. Indeed, she is so over-the-top in her villainy that one wonders how such a seemingly level-headed and sweet-tempered soul as Marty could ever have been fooled into marrying her in the first place.

Perry doesn't do much better with the main female character, a snooty, high-priced African-American lawyer named Julia, who looks down her nose on poor working-class stiffs like Monty who takes a position as her much-abused chauffeur in order to make a little money on the side. Monty soon discovers that all the over-stressed Julia needs is a good man to bring meaning to her sterile, empty life. Thus, with the character of Julia, Perry manages to insult blacks, career women and specifically black career women in one fell swoop.

The movie makes some interesting points about the role class consciousness plays in the black community, with wealthy blacks sometimes more dismissive of their less well-off counterparts than are wealthy whites. Unfortunately, this theme is played out in the context of a fairly formulaic romance between Monty and Julia, with the "little girls" of the title reduced to not much more than walk-on roles in the story. Idris Elba is appealing and solid as the sincere, hardworking Monty, while Gabrielle Union does what she can with the poorly written part of Julia.

The narrative also suffers from what first-year screenwriting students (or "Crash" deriders) like to refer to as "coincidence overload," with characters bumping into one another at all-too-convenient moments or just happening to learn crucial bits of information from news stories on TV.

"Daddy's Little Girls" starts off with the best of intentions, and there are certainly some poignant, touching moments to be found in the film, but the movie is so fixated on pandering to the emotions of its audience, especially in the melodramatic final reel, that most of the goodwill one brings to the project has pretty much evaporated by the time the closing credits come rolling by.

Based on a real-life couple, the film details the nuances of everyday life in a house overrun with children. From getting all the kids ready for school to sending off an older son to war, this well-written film is wholesome entertainment that doesn't condescend. The Original Kings of Comedy achieves the seemingly impossible task of capturing the rollicking and sly comedy routines of stand-up and sitcom vets Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley, Cedric the Entertainer, and Bernie Mac and the magic of experiencing a live concert show. Director Spike Lee and his crew plant a multitude of cameras in a packed stadium and onstage (as well as backstage, as they follow the comedians) to catch the vivid immediacy of the show, which is as much about the audience as it is about the jokes. And the jokes are funny.

All four riff fast and furiously (and with much swearing) on the world in terms of race, family, sex, and in one routine, outer space. Hughley takes comedic aim at extreme sports and eating disorders, while Cedric harks back to the day when gang fights meant calling opponents out onto the dance floor. Bernie Mac, the self-confessed id comedian of the group, presents a routine that is simultaneously offensive and hilarious--an apt reminder that comedy can and should be vicious if we are ever to learn to laugh at ourselves and hopefully be the better for it. Harvey, who acts as the MC for the show, has some transcendent moments with the crowd (a '70s slow jam sing-along, anyone?) that have to be seen to be believed. There's no doubt as to why Kings was a hit with concert and movie audiences; the laughs keep coming, in the tradition of Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy, with a sharp eye on the nuances of today's racially affected culture. --Shannon Gee

5 out of 5 stars THESE GUYS ARE LEGENDS.......2007-08-23

Although this show dates way back when, it is a priceless piece of comedy. This is a dvd that can be dusted off time and time again and still hold it's weight against the rest.Having originally bought the dvd on a trip to the US and subsequently had it borrowed and never returned, I just had to get myself another. A lot of today's up and coming comedians can learn a lot from these guys.

The host Steve Harvey holds the crowd whilst the main acts strut their stuff, each with their own individual style. If it's laughter you want............ nuff said........GET YOUR COPY!

James Stewart reunites with his Harvey director, Henry Koster, in this 1962 comedy, which is charming enough even though it doesn't seem quite up to the level of talent involved. (The screenwriter is the legendary Nunnally Johnson--writer and director of The Three Faces of Eve, among many other titles--and the music is by Henry Mancini.) But it is pleasant, summery entertainment with Stewart and his screen wife, Maureen O'Hara, taking their urban family to a crumbling, seaside house for a vacation. The film was calculated to pull in older fans with Stewart as well as draw in a younger crowd that would enjoy the fairly extensive beach scenes with pop-star Fabian. Stewart is deft with the easy jokes about bad plumbing and such, and golden in several nice moments where he gets to play an attentive dad to his kids. --Tom Keogh

Description

When James Stewart decides to take his family on vacation in California, he needs another vacation to recover. Co-stars Fabian.

5 out of 5 stars Great Actor, Great Movie.......2007-08-12

Ok, I am a little young to remember Fabian or Jimmy Stewart as anyone other than that guy from that Christmas movie. But, I got this movie on the advice of my dad, who watched it as a kid. I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. It is a timeless tale of family and the good times that can result when one takes vacations within the parents. It also is a tale of a father's effort to understand their children, and the difficulties that can involve. So the movie is good couple of hours. Even though it's an oldie, it is not too far out of reach from the modern age to make it inaccessible. I got to say that after watching this movie, I did get the urge to see more of Jimmy in other roles. Anyway, it's a good flick.

5 out of 5 stars I love Stewart and this movie.......2007-08-09

This movie is a classic gem.

It's about a vacation lead by a father (Stewart) who is very much against taking the whole family which includes two adult daughters and their families, a young self-conscious daughter with braces, and a son who's a TV junkie. The mother (O'Hara) convinces him to go.

At first, Stewart is very disconnected from all the family members (except his wife) but as the movie goes on he gets closer to each child. The things he goes through to get to that point are great humor.

My favorite part of the movie is when the Turners show up to stay for a few days. This couple is into nothing since neither person wants to do anything the other doesn't want to do. It looks like they're going to be a couple of duds but they both end up being some of the comedic highlights of the movie.

If you like Stewart and O'Hara I'm sure you'll like this movies.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie - Definitly a great buy and a steal @ the price........2007-07-03

I love this movie. If you enjoy classic movies and like comedies you'll love this movie. The whole family will find something to enjoy and the movie bears well with repeat viewings. It's a nice slice of a time that's long gone and the issues are the same no matter the decade when you get a family on vacation together.

You'll love the cast and the script moves briskly.

Happy viewing!

5 out of 5 stars It doesn't get better than this!.......2007-06-16

I love, love, love this movie! So funny and so real as far as family relationships go. Even though the lingo and clothing are out-dated, it doesn't matter. Time does not change how we interact with our spouses, bosses, and especially children/parents. Everyone can relate to this film. Great fun and highly recommended to all!

5 out of 5 stars Must See.......2007-06-01

A wonderful Hollywood classic. Light and funny with some down to earth situations every family faces. They just don't make them like this any more.
