2 out of 5 stars It was a little weak...........2007-08-26

When a spoiled rich woman's husband dumps her for a younger woman, Helen (Kimberly Elise) is kicked out of her house and goes to live with her grandma Madea (Tyler Perry). At first I was very sympathetic for Helen- her husband treated her awfully, she had no money, and the way he asked for a divorce was heartbreaking... But over time I felt less and less sympathy for her. First of all, she allowed her husband to bully her into abandoning her own family. She only goes back to them because she is forced to, not because she feels remorse for what she had done. Second, the rebound romance with the moving guy just didn't do it for me. I think it was the bandanna but he just was not very attractive... I also thought Helen became the abuser towards the end when she was torturing her abusive husband. This was supposed to be inspiring? I was disappointed and sickened. Whatever happened to turning the other cheek? I would've respected her much more.

Overall a movie with promise, but characters I just cared nothing about. 2 stars.

i had been resisting this movie but i finally watched it and was pleasantly surprised. There is great comedy here - reminscent of old Sandford and Aunt Esther. Tyler does a great job. Kimberly Elise is the spitting image of Cicely Tyson - it's great to see the two as mother and daughter. The comedy is not vulgar and the antics, while predictable are still funny. It would be good to see MedeA Played by a Real woman - an aunt Esther type. I loved her rages. The Last part of the movie was better - the middle had me losing interest. The Gospel singing was great and the message of hope was brililant. Kimberly played a jilted lady day type - but her few moments of RAGE were extraordinary!!

I love this movie, this is the 7th copy I have given to friends. The power of forgiveness is shown in great detail. Only in this, can one be truely set free.

Few movies are made with the personal fervor of Diary of a Mad Black Woman. When Helen (Kimberly Elise, Beloved) is literally thrown out of her house by her callous lawyer husband (Steve Harris), her sense of self unravels. She finds herself on the doorstep of her gun-toting grandmother Madea (cross-dressed Tyler Perry), who sets Helen on the road to dignity and forgiveness--with a few detours along the way. The plot of Diary of a Mad Black Woman unfolds in a dizzying melange of styles, from soap opera to campy comedy to chick-flick romance to gothic revenge to inspirational tale of redemption. Perry, like Eddie Murphy in The Nutty Professor, plays multiple roles in a family, two of which are over-the-top scenery-chewers while the other is a sincere, generous family man with a drug-addicted wife. This everything-including-the-kitchen-sink approach reflects the play's origins; Perry adapted the screenplay from his enormously popular gospel play, a genre of melodrama featuring extreme emotional drama and whiplash inducing plot turns. Some viewers will clutch this movie to their breast as a cinematic feast; others will see it as so schizophrenic it borders on the surreal. But either way, Elise's charismatic performance will keep you engaged throughout. Also featuring Cicely Tyson (Sounder), Shemar Moore (The Brothers), and Judge Mablean Ephriam (Divorce Court). --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Diary of a Mad Black Woman: The Play.......2007-08-28

This is a good production. Marva King is great in her role as Helen and Tyler Perry does it again as Madea and his new role, Daddy Charles (Charles Sr.). Helen and Charles Jr. were high school sweet hearts who married young. Charles has become a very successful Atlanta defense attorney, with a mansion the size of the Pentagon and Helen was his beautiful, stay-at-home wife, Over the years, Charles becomes a vain and mean spirited man whom has mistreatment Helen on numerous occasions within their marriage. Helen fears they've grown apart, which seems an understatement, given his secretiveness and verbal abuse. Asked about his mysterious late-night disappearances he snaps, "When you get a job and pay one of these bills, then you can ask me a question!" Her fears are confirmed when, without warning, and on the evening of their 18th wedding anniversary, He announces that he's leaving her for her best friend Brenda. Unfortunate for him and his mistress, Helen is the Granddaughter of Madea; Once Madea gets wind of how Charles has been mistreating Helen, all hell breaks loose. Nobody messes with Madea and family members!

    3 out of 5 stars God Lord..........2007-01-04

this play is nothing like Madea's class renunion or like Madea goes to jail.. except for Tyler Perry's performance.. all the others sucked big time..

5 out of 5 stars Yes it did Show in 73501.......2005-04-28

This is a definite buy. I couldn't get enough of it. I loved the play and the movie. I have the play, must get the movie. I have all of Tyler Perry's video's except the Brown's and I'll remedy that next month at movie buying time. I would like this in my wish list. I'll probably get it though, before it's offered.

1 out of 5 stars Another Installment In the Dying Art of Modern Black Cinema.......2005-04-27

Well maybe not as serious as the title of my review,
but this movie is certainly nothing to get a Hallelujah
    out of me.

To be fair, I was watching this movie while napping. Somehow,
when closing credits rolled around, I still didn't feel like
I missed anything worthwhile to make me feel any differently.

This movie can best be described with one word: "stock."
Stock characters, stock scripting, stock actors, stock
    stereotypical black emotions.

Kimberly Elise delivers a good performance in spite of what
she had to work with. Shemar Moore looks smelly, unbathed,
and horribly out of place (maybe that's good acting, in
comparison with his usual, pretty boy exhibitions). It is
refreshing to see screen veteran Cicely Tyson, but I don't
know why she chose this project to make a recent appearance.

Kimberly Elise is not my favorite actress, but she saves this
shipwreck. My greatest complaint with her acting is that she
isn't well rounded as an actor. The only times she "comes
alive" in any of her movies is when she's somehow driven over
the edge or for some reason she has to appear deranged or
disturbed; even then, she gives that head lowered,
wide eyed, Scared Bambi expression that is destined to
    become her trademark.

I'm trying to support Black movie makers, but please,
    somebody,
    anybody,
    give us cinema to savor,
    besides the prolific antics
    of Medea (no further comments).

    4 out of 5 stars Get a Grip it's called "Entertainment".......2005-04-26

I was appalled at the number of negative reviews on this movie coming from black folk. And yea I followed up on the rest of your reviews too and found that most bashed everything that they reviewed. Makes you wonder if they are not "Mad and Black". It is not that I expected everyone to love this movie, but nor did I expect the blatant disrespect of another man's craft as displayed in some of these reviews. When "Diary" opened in our city, it was sold out for days on end. The only way you were able to get a ticket was to buy one in advance and then show up an hour early on showing day. And our city is not a metro but it is not a one-stoplight town either. We have an abundant amount of theaters and Diary was showing on four screens at two of the larger complexes. People stood in line for hours in the pouring rain just to get a ticket for any showing possible. And for Mr. Perry it paid off, debuting at #1 on its opening weekend. Diary did its thing. And it is making Mr. Perry a wealthy man. $Ching Ching$. I was not moved when the "other critics" slammed the movie, saying it was one of the worst of the year. That I could stand. But now I read reviews from uppity black so called critics who now follow their lead. For what purpose do I ask? Once again I am not saying that everyone has to write a positive review.
This is called ENTERTAINMENT folk. Mr. Webster defines entertainment as "amusement". And that is exactly what Darren Grant, Mr. Perry, Kimberly Elise, Shemar Moore and the rest of the cast did. This movie is very entertaining. No it is not an Epic, a Biography, or a True story. And it was never meant to be. It was just for pure fun and enjoyment with a subtle message. Well maybe it could be a true story since many of the situations and characters depicted live in our very own homes, towns and streets. Some probably even wrote a review. ; ) And naw, I am not saying it was the best picture either. I have seen some movies, both black and white, that were far better or worst. And adding to that, when have we as "Black Folk" won an Oscar for best film for any of our movies either produced or directed. So to say that it is not award winning is not saying much at all. I give Mr. Perry and cast an "A" for entertaining us. And that is exactly what Diary will do if you take off your rose-colored glasses, sit back, and attempt to enjoy this movie. By the way Kimberly Elise is so so fine. So stop the soapbox reviews and try to be encouraging.

5 out of 5 stars seeing the movie first didn't ruin it.......2005-12-17

i saw the movie version first & so was pleasantly surprised to discover that the two versions were handled SO differently -- so much so that they are BOTH worth seeing & (in my opinion) owning. there are some different characters in each & some of the situations are handled differently, but the overall story remains the same &, of course, madea is HYSTERICAL no matter where she goes! :D i also enjoyed the father character in the play version a lot better than the movie version's joe (joe was a little too real-life disgusting for me -- i was having flashbacks to someone i know in real life! =:O) & i LOVED the strong-in-the-Lord singing mom, ESPECIALLY when she sings that song about rebuking the devil -- you GO girl! i also enjoyed the fact that there seemed to be a little more Jesus in the play version -- the movie version seemed to have more of that "sanitized" hollywood feel? i.e. cleansed of explicit references to God, Jesus & the Bible -- which i don't blame mr. perry for & i praise God that he's getting his plays made into movies & reaching a wider audience with the Message \o/ -- you GO dude!

5 out of 5 stars Buy the Play.......2005-07-28

I was so impressed with the stage play that I would recommend it to anyone. The movie is ok. But I will not purchase it. I really enjoy the interaction between the characters in the play. As in most remakes the orginal is usually better. If you have the opportunity to go to one of Mr. Perry's plays I will be a good experience. My friend called me in Germany and told me she brought tickets and I was able to fly there to see the play It was wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Whether you saw the movie or not, you need to see this play........2005-05-02

I saw the movie before I got this play. If you have seen the movie you need to see this as well. Other than the songs being too long, it was great. Please don't go in with the mind set of it being like the movie because it is not. Some of the characters are different. So of course the outcome is different. Daddy Charles was a good character choice addition to the play. You will laugh. This play if definitely funny. And it gives you something to think about.
