The gorgeously ingrown subgenre of Japanese manga and anime known as shojo, entertainment aimed specifically at young girls, is arguably the most interesting stuff coming out of that vast Japanese entertainment factory at the moment. The TV series Virgin Fleet, created by shojo veteran Ohji Hiroi (Sakura Wars), isn't quite as extravagantly expressionistic as Revolutionary Girl Utena or Escaflowne, but it comes close, and its sleek retro "alternate history" setting is a cut above. Unfolding in a warped version of Japan in the 1920s, the series follows a group of adolescent female warriors, mysteriously endowed with an occult lighting-bolt power known as "Virgin Energy," who are recruited as cadets in a top-secret military unit in the run-up to World War II. The story lines combine typical schoolgirl crushes and peer-group rivalries with exhilarating aerial-combat sequences. As is often the case in shojo anime the visual embellishments are gratuitously lush, the emotional entanglements surprisingly intense and complicated. The central character, Shokase, is an orphan who puts her marriage plans on hold in order to continue defending the motherland against its rapacious Western enemies. The tape has been self-rated as suitable for viewers aged 13 and up, and that seems about right; the virginity issue is discreetly presented. The installment includes the first three episodes of the original series, dubbed in English. --David ChuteCustomer Reviews:
Nothing spectacular.......2001-08-11
Unfortunately, the DVD comes with close to no extras: the English/Japanese dialogue with options for subtitles, and a few trailers of other series, but that's it.

Life isn't easy for the girls in the super-secret Virgin Fleet. Schoolwork is rough and the competition's brutal. Luckily, cadets are trained in the use of "Virgin Energy," serious blasting power useful for playing pranks, scuffling with the (ick!) boys, and blowing enemy war planes out of the sky!Customer Reviews:

Where to start..........2003-07-03
Second Review: Gall Force. Seems to be the first movie out of a whole series of 'Gall Force' movies. And it was a movie, not a series of episodes stringed together. Made around the mid-1980s, it is full of mecha and battles, very much like Robotech, but it is more polished. The artists took a lot more time on each cell, each scene, being that it is about 86 minutes long, they could spend a lot more on the flow of the plot, the surprise ending and even the cool alien race (who really remind me of the Invid). The music is used just like in a live-film, to help the mood in flashbacks and such. Also, there is a lot of nudity, slight nudity and, of course, violence. I give it a 5 out of 5 and it's really what saves the 2-pack. Lots of plot twists which keeps you hooked AND guessing. Also the writers were willing to kill off characters to keep the plot going.
Note: IF you can get Gall Force WITHOUT Virgin Fleet go for it.
