Disc 1: WHAT'S NEW PUSSYCAT? Disc 2: THE PARTY Disc 3: The PINK PANTHER Disc 4: CASINO ROYALE (1967)
Customer Reviews:
The Peter Sellers Giftset.......2007-03-16
This is a great cross section of Peter Sellers' films. Peter Sellers is well known as Inspector Clouseau as he first appeared in THE PINK PANTHER. My favorite here is WHAT'S NEW PUSSYCAT even though Sellers is not the main character. Peter Sellers character is that of the longhaired psychoanalyst Dr. Fritz Fassbender who is crazier than his patients. The office visit scene with Sellers and patient Peter O'Toole is a classic. Sellers' character in that film just so off-the-wall. THE PARTY is very. It surrounds around Sellers as a Hollywood extra mistakenly invited to a who's who wild house party. Sellers really makes this film work. Sellers gets top billing in 1967's CASINO ROYALE filmed as a James Bond spoof rather than the genuine article. Essentially Sellers is chosen as a replacement (one of several) for the genuine James Bond (David Niven) who is now in retirement to play and defeat Le Chiffre (Orson Welles) at baccarat at the Casino Royale. Sellers' role is actually small but still memorable. The laughs in CASINO ROYALE are hit and miss in this mixed bag with several directors at the helm that really lacks cohesion but still manages to amuse.
This set of films contains excellent scores from two brilliant composers. The inimitable Henry Mancini scored both THE PINK PANTHER and THE PARTY. Burt Bacharach, near the top of his game for capturing that wild innovative 60's sound scored both WHAT'S NEW PUSSYCAT and CASINO ROYALE which featured great recorded tunes for Tom Jones, Dusty Springfield and Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass.

An appealing, free-floating lunacy fuels What's New Pussycat?, and there's enough of it bubbling around to carry the movie past its many defects. The cast is like a collection of terribly attractive people stumbling over each other at a disorganized cocktail party--they aren't always witty, and some of them are drunk, but there's enough going on to keep you distracted. Peter O'Toole plays a swinging London womanizer seeking help for his addiction, who makes the mistake of consulting one Dr. Fritz Fassbender (Peter Sellers), a demented psychoanalyst. Woody Allen made his movie debut here and wrote the script (much altered, to Allen's chagrin, in the filmmaking process). This movie and Casino Royale--which also features Sellers, Allen, Ursula Andress, and a Burt Bacharach song--are overstuffed '60s artifacts, brimming with mod chaos. Alas, neither film is as funny as it should be. --Robert Horton
Description
It's tough being the cat's meow! A "zany blend of slapstick gags and madcap comedy" (Cue), this "hilarious" (Motion Picture Herald) romp, starring Peter Sellers, Peter O'Toole and WoodyAllen in his acting and screenwriting debut, is the "wildest, wackiest" (Boxoffice) film to emerge from the swingin' '60s. Burt Bacharach's Oscar(r)-nominated* title song only adds tothe infectious appeal! Michael (O'toole) has a problem: he's a mademoiselle magnet! His demented psychiatrist (Sellers) and sex-starved friend (Allen) would kill for this problem, but his would-be fiancée (Romy Schneider) might just kill him. Undergoing therapy that would put Freud in a straitjacket, Michael tries to reform, but it won't be easy with sex kittens like Capucine, Paula Prentiss and Ursula Andress on his tail! *1965: Song (with Hal David)

Legandary.......2007-05-02
When this film was released in the summer of 1965 it was the funniest film I
had ever seen. I paid 7 times to see this in the theater. Bought it on laser disc
years ago and now so glad to have it on dvd. Just did a theatrical production
with Paula Prentiss and she is still on top of her game even now.
Michael James: "Pussycat from the sky, I can't resist you" .......2007-04-30
"What's New Pussycat? (1965) was directed by a British director, Clive Donner and it is the first feature film for which Woody Allen wrote the original screenplay. Allen also played a supporting role of Victor Skakapopulis, the friend of Michael James (Peter O'Toole). Michael is a fashion editor, surrounded by beauty and glamour of his models which he can't refuse. He truly loves his fiancée Carole (Romy Schneider) and wants to be faithful to her but what can a man do if the gorgeous women literally fell for him from the sky? He sees a psychoanalyst Dr. Fassbender (Peter Sellers) who is not much of help and faces his own demons. Meanwhile, Victor is desperately in love with his best friend's fiancée...
The movie reminds a lot "Casino Royale" - it was made in the 60s, has a great cast (Peter Sellers, Peter O'Toole, Romy Schneider, Capucine, Paula Prentiss, Woody Allen, Ursula Andress), strikingly beautiful women and the song by Burt Bacharach. It takes place in Paris - and it is almost as much mess as "Casino... " is - silly, naive, and often simply ridiculous but somehow it works after all these years. One of the reasons I believe is Allen's script, the dialogues and one-liners that are hilarious. This time, Allen received more screen time that in Casino.... and he made his scenes very funny. "What's New Pussycat?" is not a great movie but it is charming and I like it.

BEFORE WOODY ALLEN BECAME PRETENTIOUS.......2007-02-11
"What's New Pussycat"is a product of it's time,in the same way that the original"jazz Singer"was..One can hardly expect one of the first talking films to be technically the equal,if not the superior of all of the talking films that followed, although obviously there are those out there who don't understand this...The script Woody Allen wrote for "pussycat"reflects wit rather than pretense, which is what has bogged down most of Allen's later efforts.."What's new pussycat"does have certain problems, mainly the fact that it reflects the'60s in all of it's mod, wacky zest, but without having been there or having done that themselves,a lot of modern viewers, more used to Allen's later pretentious drivel, will have trouble connecting the dots...Sure,a lot of people like the "annie Hall",&"Hannah & Her Sisters" Allen, with all of that boring slop he tosses into such projects, but I prefer "Take The Money & Run","Bannanas" "Love & Death" and "Pussycat",all F-U-N-N-Y rather than pretentious...Those expecting more of the same "annie Hall"drivel will not like"Pussycat",and those children born in the"80s and afterward, who did not experience the "60s firsthand will neither appreciate nor even comprehend what a film like"Pussycat" is all about...too bad, because Woody Allen USED to be very funny, and movies used to entertain rather than preach...
Say it isn't so!.......2007-01-27
I'm disappointed to read that this DVD version of "What's New Pussycat" has had scenes removed in order to be politically correct.
I was 12 years old the year this movie came out in the theatre. I was at an all girls sleepover, and we were supposed to see a different film that evening when the parents dropped us off at the theatre.
We sat in front row seats giggling at how naughty we were as the film began. And then "he" (Peter O'Toole) came on the screen - larger than life with the bluest eyes I've ever seen. I felt my little girl heart flutter for the first time. My first crush. Gosh he was gorgeous.
Mr. O'Toole did not age well over the years. My daughter looked at me incredulously when I told her how handsome he had been. I was looking forward to proving it to her with this film.
After reading about the cuts, I hesitate to order it, Drats!
Why can't more comedies be this funny?.......2006-09-30
I love this movie! Silly, fun, politically incorrect and funny as all heck. Burt Bacharach's score is marvelous--sleek, sly and sexy. Everyone in the cast looks to be having a blast, particularly during the go-cart chase finale, and their enthusiasm is infectious.
I've no idea how the movie plays on a widescreen TV, but the image looks great on my 19-inch CRT TV. Many thanks to MGM for finally releasing this hilarious hit from the '60s!
