Poor Kiyone! She graduated second in her class at the Galactic Police Force Academy and finds herself assigned to the backwater planet Earth with her well-intentioned but ditzy partner Mihoshi. Rather than stay at the Masaki home in rural Japan with the rest of the interstellar freeloaders, Mihoshi and Kiyone get an apartment in Tokyo, taking part-time jobs to pay the rent. Mihoshi inadvertently wreaks havoc wherever she goes, from construction sites to fast food restaurants, but karaoke bars provide a welcome break from these fiascoes.

The funniest episode in this collection of the first "Tenchi" broadcast series is "No Need for a Carnival." The women from outer space pitch in at the Masaki Family Shrine harvest festival with predictably disastrous results. Space pirate Ryoko and Jurai Princess Ayeka set up rival shooting galleries, with little figures of each other as the targets. Super-genius Washu creates a haunted house that's a little too realistic for Tenchi, and when Mihoshi makes Sasami a cotton candy, she creates a tsunami of pink spun sugar that engulfs the entire carnival. It's all very silly in the special way that "Tenchi" fans on both sides of the Pacific expect.

Rated for ages 13 and up for brief nudity, minor profanity, and some scary imagery in the fun house. --Charles Solomon

Tenchi Universe always cracks me up. This is probably the funniest anime that I have ever seen, and mixed with a good plot and action, you have a great series.

My favorite episode on this DVD is "No Need For Carnivals". It's great!

The second DVD in the Tenchi Universe........2004-06-19

Mihoshi happened to be Kiyone's partner, a partner she happily thought was dead. But it seems that Mihoshi is very much alive and Kiyone has to go found her. Kiyone not only finds her partner, VERY much alive, but also the wanted space pirate Ryoko living in the same HOUSE! Kiyone tries to arrest Ryoko and, with Mihoshi's end, the fight ends up in the draw. Soon Kiyone is drunk and telling the others all about Mihoshi's incompetence. To her horror she and Mihoshi are assigned as Resident Officers for the solar system! At least she still has a working spaceship.
Because the cost of living is so high and Kiyone isn't one to be a freeloader, the two officers get an apartment in the city and try to pay the bills with part-time jobs. Between Mihoshi messing up their Earth jobs and the job of policing the solar system, the two become very, very exhausted. Tenchi and the gang do drop by once, with food, but they wreck the place. But not all is bad - the two like going to karaoke bars and Kiyone is starting to LIKE Mihoshi.

Then the Carnival is in town and everybody goes to either work in it, like Ryoko, Ayeka and Washu, or just enjoy it, like Sasami on a date with Tenchi. Even Mihoshi and Kiyone are there, selling cotton candy, before the machine goes out of control. Well, it's not Mihoshi's fault, Washu made the thing and in this series her inventions break down. A lot. Ryoko and Ayeka also get into a fight which only stops when the two are taken out by a flood of cotton candy. Tenchi feels bad about the whole thing, yet in the end, Sasami really enjoyed herself.
While I gave the DVD only four points I really enjoyed episode 6, "No Need fo Resident Officers!", which shows Mihoshi and Kiyone trying to live in Japan. It really does add to their characters and is somewhat touching.

INTRODUCTION:
Although the Tenchi Muyo anime series became a massive hit in its native Japan and other neighboring nations, it was never fortunate enough to gain that kind of success in the United States. That's a real shame, because this is one of the best anime series out there. It DID air briefly in America on the Cartoon Network, but it never really won the audiences over the way series like Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z did. But this series is every bit as good as the animes that DID achieve fame in America. Read on for my review of this set.

BASIC PLOT:
It's hard to describe this series because there are so many twists and turns in the plot, but I'll try my best. The story follows a young man named Tenchi Masaki, who has just returned to school from a long break. Soon enough, he meets up with a rather strange cast of characters, and discovers that he may be the last hope for saving the universe! To make things even more difficult for him, many of these strange characters he has met fall in love with him, and this creates some competition amongst them that results in some rather comical scenes.

SERIES OPINIONS:
Why is this series so underrated in America? This is one of the best animes out there. It combines the samurai-style action of Dragon Ball Z with the romance/slapstick humor stylings of Sailor Moon, and this creates a series that is universally appealing. And believe me, over time this series will grow on you.

THE DUB:
Surprisingly, the dub version of this series isn't that bad. A few scenes have been mistranslated or toned down for American audiences, but it's nothing major like with other animes. Here's a little tip, if you're curious about what has been changed - while you're watching the Japanese subtitled version of the DVD, hit the Audio button on your DVD remote and switch to the dub track. This way you can watch the English dub with the English subtitles for the Japanese version - there's no better way to see how different some of the translations are!

DVD:
Once again, DVDs featuring an uncut dub and an uncut sub have been released. This is great because you get both versions of the series. There are also some bonus features as well. There aren't a whole lot of bonuses, but at least there are some - a number of anime DVDs don't have any at all!

OVERALL:
Overall this is an excellent DVD set, and it's good to have all the episodes of this classic series on DVD at long last. Still, the DVDs could have been done a little better. If you're an anime fan, this is a strongly recommended release.

No Need for partners!.......2002-04-10

In the first espiode of this DVD, Kiyone arrives and suprised to see all the people within the Masaki Household. Kiyone is forced to stay on Earth as Resident Officer with Mioshi. Kiyone is one of my favorite characters.

Tenchi Universe!.......2000-12-09

First of all for all of you parents out there this DVD doesn't have any editing on it. So you may want to watch it with your kids... Well anyway I decided to buy this DVD because I wanted to see the 'orignal' Tenchi Universe. Not the stuff I was watching on Toonami. It has the opening part on it (unlike Toonami) and the parts where if you were watching it on t.v. it has a little picture with Ryo-ohki and Ryoko. There are three different endings you can choose and you can either have it in Japenese or English. In this movie when I was watching the subbed version the song is sort of different than the dubbed one! I may be wrong but I swear it is. This DVD is about Kiyone, Mihoshi's partnre finds her and is stationed on Earth. They end up living in an aparment with tons of part-time jobs. The third one was a special one I guess. A part of the OAV or something, I dunno but the last one was sort of boring to me. There was no action whatsoever. I give it four stars because it wasn't the best action packed video i have seen for this show (my opinion). It is a must buy for Tenchi fans because it explains about Mihoshi's partner, Kiyone.
