Critically hailed as an instant classic, Clint Eastwood's Letters from Iwo Jima is a masterwork of uncommon humanity and a harrowing, unforgettable indictment of the horrors of war. In an unprecedented demonstration of worldly citizenship, Eastwood (from a spare, tightly focused screenplay by first-time screenwriter Iris Yamashita) has crafted a truly Japanese film, with Japanese dialogue (with subtitles) and filmed in a contemplative Japanese style, serving as both complement and counterpoint to Eastwood's previously released companion film Flags of Our Fathers. Where the earlier film employed a complex non-linear structure and epic-scale production values to dramatize one of the bloodiest battles of World War II and its traumatic impact on American soldiers, Letters reveals the battle of Iwo Jima from the tunnel- and cave-dwelling perspective of the Japanese, hopelessly outnumbered, deprived of reinforcements, and doomed to die in inevitable defeat. While maintaining many of the traditions of the conventional war drama, Eastwood extends his sympathetic touch to humanize "the enemy," revealing the internal and external conflicts of soldiers and officers alike, forced by circumstance to sacrifice themselves or defend their honor against insurmountable odds. From the weary reluctance of a young recruit named Saigo (Kazunari Ninomiya) to the dignified yet desperately anguished strategy of Japanese commander Tadamichi Kuribayashi (played by Oscar-nominated The Last Samurai costar Ken Watanabe), whose letters home inspired the film's title and present-day framing device, Letters from Iwo Jima (which conveys the bleakness of battle through a near-total absence of color) steadfastly avoids the glorification of war while paying honorable tribute to ill-fated men who can only dream of the comforts of home. --Jeff Shannon

On the DVDs
Like the film itself, the two-disc special edition of Letters from Iwo Jima is predominantly Japanese in content, and that's as it should be. Disc 1 presents the film in a flawless widescreen transfer, with a Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround soundtrack that perfectly captures the film's wide dynamic range. The optional subtitles can be turned off for those wishing to immerse themselves in a completely Japanese viewing experience. Disc 2 opens with "Red Sun, Black Sand: The Making of Letters from Iwo Jima," a 20-minute behind-the-scenes documentary that concisely covers all aspects of production, from director Clint Eastwood's initial decision to create a companion piece to Flags of Our Fathers, to interview comments from principal cast and crew, the latter including Flags screenwriters Paul Haggis and Letters screenwriter Iris Yamashita, costume designer Deborah Hopper, editor Joel Cox, cinematographer Tom Stern, production designer James Murakami (taking over for the ailing Henry Bumstead), and coproducer Rob Lorenz. "The Faces of Combat" is an 18-minute featurette about selecting the Japanese (and Japanese-American) cast of Letters, and how they were chosen through the international collaboration of Eastwood's long-time casting director Phyllis Huffman (who turned over some of her duties to her son while struggling with terminal illness) and Japanese casting associate Yumi Takada, who filled important roles with Japanese celebrities (like pop star Kazunari Ninomiya, who plays "Saigo") and unknown actors alike.

"Images from the Frontlines" is a 3.5-minute montage of images from the film and behind-the-scenes, set to the sparse piano theme of Eastwood's original score. The remaining bonus features chronicle the world premiere of Letters in Tokyo on November 15, 2006. The premiere itself is covered in a 16-minute featurette taped at the famous Budokan arena, where we see the red-carpet procession, a full-capacity audience despite cold November weather, and introductory comments from the film's primary cast and crew, many of them quite moving with regard to the satisfaction of working on a film that helps Japanese viewers come to terms with a painful chapter of their history. The following day's press conference (at the Grand Hyatt Tokyo hotel) is a 24-minute Q&A session covering much of the same territory, with additional testimony from principal cast & crew. Throughout this two-day event, it's clear that Eastwood (referring to himself as "a Japanese director who doesn't speak the Japanese language") was warmly embraced by the Japanese, and that Letters from Iwo Jima had served its intended purpose, reminding us of the horrors of war while uniting both Japanese and Americans in somber reflection, 61 years after the battle of Iwo Jima. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Nominated for 4 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Clint Eastwood's Letters from Iwo Jima tells the untold story of the Japanese soldiers who defended their homeland against invading American forces during World War II. With little defense other than sheer will and the volcanic rock of Iwo Jima itself, the unprecedented tactics of General Tadamichi Kuribayashi (Ken Watanabe, The Last Samurai) and his men transform what was predicted to be a swift defeat into nearly 40 days of heroic and resourceful combat. Their sacrifices, struggles, courage and compassion live on in the taut, gripping film Rolling Stone calls "unique and unforgettable." It is the powerful companion piece to Flags of Our Fathers.

5 out of 5 stars The bad guys aren't really that bad.......2007-09-11

Its not often that Hollywood makes a movie about soldiers experiencing a defeat. Even more rare is a movie about enemy soldiers being defeated by the home forces; American soldiers. Amazingly, it took Clint Eastwood to make such a movie. Released late in 2006 as a companion of the other Eastwood movie, Flags of our Fathers, this is one of the best war movies this decade. Set entirely on the island of Iwo Jima, it examines the defense and conquest of this island by the US military in 1944 as seen from the eyes of the Japanese defenders. The Japanese soldiers are played by Japanese actors; which is exemplary, and their on-screen dialogue is Japanese, another plus of authenticity.

4 out of 5 stars Not "anti-war" but anti-cliche. .......2007-09-04

Okay, so don't expect the intensity of the battle scenes of Saving Private Ryan or the surrealism of Full Metal Jacket Here. Once I got over my pre-conceptions about what a "war movie" was supposed to be like, I was fine. Also, if you like happy/neat endings...this is not the movie for you. What you will find is a war movie in which you care about the characters and feel torn about many of the issues/dillemas presented. You will vacilate greatly over the course of the movie: one moment disgust/shock, the next admiration/reverence. So, if you are up for a non-traditional war movie, and a roller coaster of emotions, give it a spin.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Struggle.......2007-09-03

What I liked about this movie is that you walk away with an understanding of how life would be if you where put in that situation. I personally have never been in war but the concept of giving your life for war is disturbing. The consideration that factors of pride or that another man can control your life by ordering your death for the sake of cultural pride..... is mind boggling when analyzed objecively.
Anyways... this movie makes you wonder..... and that to me is a good movie.

5 out of 5 stars Letters From Iwo Jima.......2007-08-31

While there were some "slow" areas in the film, it was nevertheless an OUTSTANDING film due to the unparalleled realism of the the actors in their respective wartime roles, providing great insights into the "Bushido" code thinking of the officers versus the thinking of the common soldier. It also showed both positive and negative actions of each side (Japanese soldier versus American soldier), and shows how real leadership inspires the soldiers. The second bonus disk is a great addition to this movie. I highly recommend this 5+ star movie. This was much better than "Flags of Our Fathers".

4 out of 5 stars Another fine Clint Eastwood direction.......2007-08-27

It is a treat to have Clint Eastwood deliver his latest piece of work. "Letters of Iwo Jima" is shot in black and white and it is one of the finest war movies since "Schindler's List" that was made in the same style. It is also a foreign movie, shot entirely in Japanese language. This is a story of WWII in Pacific, made entirely from the Japanese soldier's point of view. These soldiers are just like any other. They are dedicated to their country, their duty to their emperor and honor towards their fellow countrymen. They are lonely, concerned about their families and the the future. Human nature and character trancends any morality tales. Eastwood is not lecturing us here. He is just showing us that no matter where people come from some are noble, some are not; some are decent and some are not. However, Eastwood maanges to make them feel human, strong and vulnerable at the same time. An absolute gem - must see movie.

My Neighbor Totoro is that rare delight, a family film that appeals to children and adults alike. While their mother is in the hospital, 10-year-old Satsuki and 4-year-old Mei move into an old-fashioned house in the country with their professor father. At the foot of an enormous camphor tree, Mei discovers the nest of King Totoro, a giant forest spirit who resembles an enormous bunny rabbit. Mei and Satsuki learn that Totoro makes the trees grow, and when he flies over the countryside or roars in his thunderous voice, the winds blow. Totoro becomes the protector of the two sisters, watching over them when they wait for their father, and carrying them over the forests on an enchanted journey. When the children worry about their mother, Totoro sends them to visit her via a Catbus, a magical, multilegged creature with a grin the Cheshire Cat might envy.

Unlike many cartoon children, Satsuki and Mei are neither smart-alecky nor cloyingly saccharine. They are credible kids: bright, energetic, silly, helpful, and occasionally impatient. Filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki makes the viewer believe the two sisters love each other in a way no American feature has ever achieved. My Neighbor Totoro is enormously popular in Japan, and some of the character merchandise has begun to appear in America. The film has also inspired a Japanese environmental group to buy a Totoro Forest preserve in the Saitama Prefecture, where Miyazaki's film is set. --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars This version is better than Disney's........2007-09-14

I like this version a lot better than the one that Disney recently released. I own them both and this is the one that I watch. The Disney one has its benefits; you can view the film in the original Japanese language and you can watch it in Widescreen. However, the voice over done on the new Disney one is terrible; it sounds really "acty". I am not fond of Disney's decision to try to sell Miyazaki's movies based on WHO does the voice over as opposed to HOW WELL they do the voice over.
This movie was my introduction to Miyazaki many years ago and is one of my most favorite animated films. Every child I have ever know that sees this movie loves it.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect for the youngsters.......2007-09-08

The Japanese origin of this film gives it a refreshing look compared to American animation. The story is delightful, and for a change a girl has the lead role. Kids will love the landscapes and the characters. Good, clean fun.

5 out of 5 stars Would Give it More Stars if More Than Five Were Possible.......2007-09-06

Have probably watched this movie at least fifty times with and without my daughter either all the way through or just for 10 or so minutes here and there. It's safe to say that nobody in my home has shown the slightest capacity to lose any interest in this totally brilliant-but-understatedly-so movie. If I could only recommend one thing of all the things I've ever purchased on Amazon it might just be this movie. Can't recommend it highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars This is the one you want.......2007-07-30

This is the definitive English-dubbed version. You've got to have it.

Steer clear of the Disney product. They butchered Totoro.

I concur that a full-blown multi-disc DVD would be nice, but then you might be settling for Disney dubbing. And all the good Fox version DVD's will be bought up and no longer available. Or they will be $200 collector's items.

I truly hate what Disney does to Japanese film. All the film's messages are reduced to a slow 1st grade reading level. Americanisms are substituted for Japanisms. Famous AMerican actors are used for the voices. Very distracting.

Get a clue, Disney. I'm trying to watch a Japanese film so I can see a Japanese film. I don't need it dumbed down and Americanized.

Note that the above criticism is directed agaist the Disney product.

This Fox product is great. Whatever anime you can get your hands on that Disney hasn't touched, congratulations.

I hate what Disney does to anime ever more than I hate Ted Turner for colorizing everything, but it's the same kind of hate.

5 out of 5 stars terrific, original story.......2007-07-26

very nice to have little girls as the primary characters. Well written dynamic between the sisters, showing how a big sister tends to look out for her younger siblings, and how very young children feel about being told what to do. The magical world and characters that the girls discover at their summer home is a great connection to the imaginary play that I see in the younger children. Its a little long for the little ones(3- 4.5 yrs) but my 5 year old enjoys the whole movie on an indoor day or long trip. We watched Sprirted Away first, another great movie, but its not really for little ones (some "scary" characters and a separation from parents).
In this movie, the girls' are concerned about their mother who is recuperating, but that is not the focus of the story, and I think its good to present the idea that little kids could sometimes have an ill or recuperating parent. (Instead of just dead, like so many of the princess movies)

Hayao Miyazaki gained widespread attention in Japan for his complex ecological manga series, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1982), which he adapted for the screen two years later. One thousand years after a war devastated much of the Earth, humanity clings to existence at the fringes of a vast, polluted forest inhabited by monstrous insects. Only Nausicaä, the princess of the tiny realm of the Valley of the Wind, grasps the environmental significance of the forest. She sees beyond petty wars and national rivalries to the only viable future for the planet. In Nausicaä, Miyazaki began to explore elements he would develop more fully in his later films: daring, compassionate heroines; exciting flying sequences; colorful side characters; strong interpersonal relationships; and a call for an ecologically sustainable way of life. Nausicaä prefigures Sheeta in Castle in the Sky and Chihiro in Spirited Away, just as the rough and ready Asbel anticipates Pazu in Castle in the Sky and Ashitaka in Princess Mononoke. For years, Nausicaä was available in the United States only as the badly re-edited Warriors of the Wind. The new English dub from Disney presents the film in its entirety, with strong vocal performances by Uma Thurman, Patrick Stewart, Alison Lohman, and Edward James Olmos. (Rated PG: violence, frightening imagery) --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars masterpiece!.......2007-09-06

when i first saw this film i thought to my self "it's ok, it could be better", but then i watched it again and was mystified! this is a beautiful story of a young girl fighting to save the humans that are left and the earth. the story takes place after a nuclear war that destroys the planet and most of the people and animals on it, the only forest left is a poison forest full of giant insects that protect it. its a cautionary tale of how if we let our selves go to far their will be nothing left, this is one of the reasons i love Mr. miyazaki's films so much most of the say that we half to protect our world, because if we don't, who will?

5 out of 5 stars Exilerating........2007-08-10

I love this movie. The animation is amazing. The story line is fun. And it has a great message. I recomend it completley. I never tire of watching it.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Miyazaki Films.......2007-08-10

I have seen all of Miyazaki's films and this is easily my favorite. Beautiful music and scenery mixed with a futuristic message for protecting the environment.

5 out of 5 stars nausicaa valley of the wind.......2007-07-17

Wonderful animation. Good story about respecting others and our planet. My 4 year old daughter absolutely loves this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Nausicaa.......2007-07-09

The exhilarating feature by "Spirited Away" director-animator Miyazaki, "Nausicaa" is an epic masterpiece about an issue very much on the minds of young people today: sustainable living and the future of our planet. Borrowing its apocalyptic scenario from Miyazaki's own manga originals, this dark fantasia pits a band of warrior activists against the encroachment of a poisonous environment. As always with Miyazaki, this is a world where good and evil coexist, sometimes in the same character. Splendid visuals, great voice acting by Thurman, Stewart, and Lohman, and an absorbing finale make this a science-fiction film with a heart, mind, and message.

The film boasts the best of the Bond title songs (this one sung on a dreamy track by Nancy Sinatra), but the movie itself is one of the weaker ones of the Sean Connery phase of the 007 franchise. The story concerns an effort by the evil organization SPECTRE to start a world war, but the not-so-super villain behind the plot is the awfully civilized Donald Pleasence. The thin script is by Roald Dahl (shouldn't we have expected a better Bond nemesis from the creator of mad genius Willy Wonka?), and direction is by British veteran Lewis Gilbert (Alfie). But the movie can't hold a candle to Dr. No, From Russia with Love, or Goldfinger. --Tom Keogh

Another 007 winner. Been watchig these since they first cameout in the 60's and I love them just as much now as I did the first time.

3 out of 5 stars Connery's Bond Translates Poorly to Japanese.......2007-07-04

This is the first Bond movie that's actually a bit of a bummer and the fault can be laid directly at the feet of the man who was the first and best of the cinematic Bonds. This was Connery's fifth outing in six years as the ultimate gentleman spy. He was sick of the hoopla and deeply concerned about being typecast. He looks bored and irritable and the white to Japanese transformation sequence is still a low point in the Bond canon. Sort of a jump-the-shark moment as the Bond series has only been occassionally excellent since the mid-sixties. He really should have passed the walther ppk to a new Bond actor. The script was written by Roald Dahl and he probably should have stuck to children's books. Surprisingly tone deaf, extremely wordy but with very few memorable lines. Small characters get surprisingly long speeches. What enjoyement I end up taking away from YOLT is bits and pieces. The volcano lair, Blofeld, the cute Bond girls, little nelly, the beautiful cinematography, the ninja island and the well handled action sequences. Not a bad Bond. After all, they are all fun, one way or the other, but definately middle of the pack for me.

4 out of 5 stars Megabudget Japanese Ken Adam extravaganza........2007-06-15

Of all the classic James Bond films, this is the one I had not seen in the longest time. I remembered this was where the series really lost its spark and went into absurd Austin Powers territory.

Although some of the criticism is still valid, YOLT is actually one hell of a mid-60s Albert Cubby Broccoli affair. For one thing, virtually the entire film takes place in Japan and makes impressive use of many locations, e.g. the ninja training academy is on the lawn of Himeji castle. Ken Adam was given about ten sets to design, one of them simply gargantuan. My opinion is that they are are a far stretch from his finest work but still spectacular. John Barry's music is gorgeous as always, with just the perfect asian influence.

Yet like so many Bonds the film is a pretty jumbled affair, with an on-again off-again plot that never rises much above a simmer. Donald Pleasance is a big letdown as Blofeld, as is his henchman. The romance is non-existent. So, not really a good film by any stretch. But for sheer eye candy it's outstanding. And the DTS sound is incredible.

5 out of 5 stars The one with the hollowed out volcano lair - a fun ride.......2007-04-08

Yes, it's the one with the hollowed out volcano and what a fun ride it is too. It should come as no surprise to anyone that for me (who ranks the earily similar plot-wise TSWLM at #2 of Bond movies and is a fan of Roger Moore's portrayal) that "You Only Live Twice" is high on my list of favorite Connery movies.
It's fun and zany and like a Godzilla movie on steroids Bond is plunged into a kinetic, energized Japan. A country that is reeling from an identity crisis following a humiliating defeat in WWII for the traditional nation and the onslaught of 1960s pop culture of which the Bond phenomenon was a major part.
Connery for his part looks bored and tired with the role and so the film makers understandably have loaded this movie with special effects, martial arts fighting, gimmicks and yes, a hollowed out volcano. All in the hopes that Connery will get lost in the mix and his lack of enthusiasm for the part less evident as the viewers senses are assaulted by a vibrant concoction composed of all the spectacle and wonder that screenwriter Dahl and director Lewis Gilbert could conceive.
The mission seems ripped from the headlines to use an old cliché. The time is the late 1960s and with the US and USSR locked in a race for the dominance of space, the two nations are both having capsules hijacked by some unknown power. Of course in the hyperactive paranoia of the Cold War - each blames the other. But Britain, in its infinite wisdom, stands by their claim that their tracking placed the object (that seized an American rocket) land somewhere in the sea of Japan.
The movie begins with one of my all-time favorite pre-credits sequences. Bond is in bed with an attractive Chinese girl. In what appears to be a double-cross however she pushes a button that sends the bed into the wall before letting a couple of assassins in who pepper the bed with bullet holes. Having the hero "killed off" at the beginning of the movie is a gimmick that has been copied often (and in fact first echos the opening of "From Russia With Love." But Gilbert crafts it expertly.
A solid entry in the Bond series - too light for some, but certainly a lot of fun throughout.

5 out of 5 stars JAMES BONDs Dichotomy of Styles East meets West.......2007-04-04

YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE contained elements of espionage, action, thrills, adventure and science fiction. Looking back it somehow worked loosely when put together yet till this day I can not determine what the cohesive element was. Looking at it closely the film is a real dichotomy of styles. The first hour is excellently filmed and works very well. We get to see James Bond the spy, working with recognition codes, breaking into safes, going under cover and the like. There is an excellently choreographed fight scene between Bond and a sumo wrestler. This is also the first time he developed a good working relationship with a fellow intelligence head, Tiger Tanaka, similar to that of Kerim Bey in FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE. We also see that "M" has absolute confidence in his man. "This is the big one," he tells Bond knowing that 007 is the only one capable of pulling off this assignment. There is also quite a bit of very witty dialog in the first hour of this film. In the first hour the pace is deliberate, but never boring or unentertaining. It ends with Bond flying "Little Nellie," delivered by "Q," into an aerial dogfight with four helicopters. As it moves into the second hour more of the science fiction and fantasy elements start to take center stage. The film starts to look untidy and meanders along till it gets to the excellently filmed battle between Tanaka's ninjas and Blofeld's private army in his Volcano lair. It's not a bad Bond film, but it should have been a lot better. I think the culprit was the editing. Russian and American manned space capsules were being snatched out of orbit by an "intruder missile." Bond had to find the location and the identity of those responsible before World War III breaks out. The filmmakers decided not to surprise us at the end of the film, but instead show us, not Bond, that this "intruder missile" is in fact owned by SPECTRE and is being launched from Blofeld's Volcano lair in Japan. That comes a little past the hour mark. That being the case there was a good opportunity to develop suspense, as Bond has to locate the launch site. When Bond finally does find the volcano he has very little reaction to his discovery. He in fact seems to have come prepared with suction cup kneepads, which he uses to climb upside down and into the volcano. Tanaka shows up with his men, the battle ensues and Bond saves the day. It just could have been done much better considering how well the first half of the film was handled. The massive sets designed by Ken Adam were highly innovative and stylized and are probably the best of the entire series. M's office aboard the submarine, M-1, was also pretty innovative incorporating furniture and decorations from his office from the Ministry of Defense back in London. John Barry wrote a brilliant score. His music for the "Capsule in Space" was eerily ominous. He also incorporated sections of the "James Bond Theme" very effectively subsequent to Henderson's death and the fight in Osato's office. Barry's "Mountains and Sunset" went beautifully with Freddie Young's Cinematography. This and his score for ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE were the last to contain his best action pieces for the series. These were little snippets here and there written to give the action a little more punch. I thought Sean Connery gave some his best performances as James Bond in this film. Bond's scene with Henderson was very good. His repartee with Moneypenney was one of his best. Sean Connery did return as James Bond in DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER but one era had already ended with ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE and a new one would begin with his return.

Product Description

Bob Harris (Bill Murray) and Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) are two Americans in Tokyo. Bob is a movie star in town to shoot a whiskey commercial, while Charlotte is a young woman tagging along with her workaholic photographer husband (Giovanni Ribisi). Unable to sleep, Bob and Charlotte cross paths one night in the luxury hotel bar. This chance meeting soon becomes a surprising friendship. Charlotte and Bob venture through Tokyo, having often hilarious encounters with its citizens, and ultimately discover a new belief in life's possibilities. Shot entirely on location in Japan, Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation is a valentine to the nature of close friendships and to the city of Tokyo. Ms. Coppola's film, for her original screenplay, contemplates the unexpected connections we make that might not last - yet stay with us forever.

Like a good dream, Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation envelops you with an aura of fantastic light, moody sound, head-turning love, and a feeling of déjà vu, even though you've probably never been to this neon-fused version of Tokyo. Certainly Bob Harris has not. The 50-ish actor has signed on for big money shooting whiskey ads instead of doing something good for his career or his long-distance family. Jetlagged, helplessly lost with his Japanese-speaking director, and out of sync with the metropolis, Harris (Bill Murray, never better) befriends the married but lovelorn 25-year-old Charlotte (played with heaps of poise by 18-year-old Scarlett Johansson). Even before her photographer husband all but abandons her, she is adrift like Harris but in a total entrapment of youth. How Charlotte and Bill discover they are soul mates will be cherished for years to come. Written and directed by Coppola (The Virgin Suicides), the film is far more atmospheric than plot-driven: we whiz through Tokyo parties, karaoke bars, and odd nightlife, always ending up in the impossibly posh hotel where the two are staying. The wisps of bittersweet loneliness of Bill and Charlotte are handled smartly and romantically, but unlike modern studio films, this isn't a May-November fling film. Surely and steadily, the film ends on a much-talked-about grace note, which may burn some, yet awards film lovers who "always had Paris" with another cinematic destination of the heart. --Doug Thomas

5 out of 5 stars Not for the dim-witted.......2007-09-05

This is one of Bill Murray's finest performances on film.

Whoever made the decision to shoot in Tokyo (the Director's, one can only assume), it was a brilliant choice. No city in the world can compete with Tokyo in terms of nighttime lights and the fresh sparkly cleanliness of its streets. Add in the language barrier, the Japanese, their cuisine, great photography, great direction, great acting, and finally, a terrific script, and you have a masterpiece.

Lost In Translation truly makes you feel lost---lost in time really. Sofia Coppola's use of the clock while filming native scenes accompanied only with ambient noise is a mighty tool of provoking deep thought in the viewer. Truly it must take guts to consume precious film with such shots; else more directors would utilize the method.

No two better suited individuals than Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson could have been lobbied to fulfill the lead roles. Murray has like, somehow, escalated multiple levels here in connecting with an audience. Maybe he had it inside of him all along, I don't know. Regardless, I am nearly brought to tears watching him. Here's a fellow who is nearly 60 years old, and yet, the most amazing inner talent is just now being revealed to us. What a treasure.

Ms. Johansson plays the perfect newlywed here---being left alone in a strange city by a self-absorbed husband who, apparently, doesn't appreciate what he has. Charlotte and the middle-aged Bob Harris (Johannsson and Murray) happen to fall into each other's path at one of those cosmic moments of doubt when both are unhappy with their home life.

The gold brick of this entire encounter is cast when they appear together lying on a bed. It must be seen and heard to believe; it is one of the finest performances of its kind ever filmed IMO---Hence the subject line of this review. If you do not connect with this scene, then you are either unable or have yet to experience such a moment in time.

    This is a Fabulous Movie.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent......what a beauty of a movie...feel good flick.........2007-08-18

This movie I watched, when no one was at home. It is a piece of art. The purity and open-honestness of Bob's & Charlottes (characters) relationship in the movie is striking, it is deep, without the complications of sex, its even more, they are there for one another when they need someone most. If you've ever just wanted a soul to listen to you and be there and hold you without sex, this movie is it. It makes you appreciate deepest friendships, and like any great movie, the ending makes the movie all worth it.

1 out of 5 stars Tongue Swallowingly Boring.......2007-08-14

From start to finish NOTHING HAPPENS! I can't believe some of the reviews i have read praising this movie. I love movies of all genres and when i read so many favorable reviews i was really looking forward to it. Then i watched it again and then once more, but i still thought it was boring and seriously overrated.
All we see for the duration of the film are two very dull, uninteresting characters moping around Tokyo, feeling sorry for themselves because they both have one thing in common, they are both depressed. A recipe for hilarity.
I have been accused of being unable to appreciate the subtle beauty of this film. The wonderful chemistry between Scarlet Johanssen and Bill Murray. The comedy, the romance, the artistic genius of Sofia Coppola.
No matter how hard i look, i still cant see the Emperors new clothes.

4 out of 5 stars An emotionally interactive movie........2007-08-14

In most movies we see today, a director shows the movie's characters (whether proactively or reactively) moving the plot forward in such a way that the audience knows at least as much, (usually more,) about what's going on then the characters do. The thing that makes this movie so fascinating (and to many people, frustrating) is that the characters start off knowing WAYY more about what's going on than you do, and you have to spend most of the movie trying to "catch up" by learning about who they are.

Moreover, the director has no plans to make it any easier for you to get to know these people than you would be able to if you met them in real life. It becomes clear as you move through the movie that they are no more likely to expose the deep, dark secrets of their lives to you, the audience, than they would to strangers in a foreign country (even though this absurdity is what we, as the audience, have been conditioned by Hollywood to expect!) As such, you cannot understand the story of this movie as merely a passive observer, waiting for an explanation to present itself.

So what's a movie watcher to do? Well, this is the hard part: in order to get to know them, you have to pay close attention to what's NOT happening between the characters; what seems to be missing, or left unsaid? Unless you invest in this exercise, you won't recognize the exquisite tension between the two protagonists as it builds to the movie's climax, and you will likely watch the credits feeling bored and maybe frustrated. However, those who can engage with the impromptu couple emotionally will feel the intensity and depth of the director's vision.

I only give this movie four stars because the best movies seem to involve the audience in the plot effortlessly, without requiring so much mental energy. However, director Sofia Coppola shows great skill in both crafting an environment through music and cinematography and populating it with characters that feel genuine and true to life.

5 out of 5 stars Need to watch it more than once.......2007-07-28

I must say, the first time I watched this movie, I hated it. My husband and I had rented it for the night and were expecting a film that moved along a little more quickly. After all, don't most films do that these days? It's unusual to have a film that unfolds slowly and deliberately, and if you're not in the right mood for that kind of movie at that moment, you're going to hate it. I hated this movie (with a passion) the first time I saw it. My husband and I rolled our eyes at each other when it was done, as if saying, "Can we get those 2 hours back?!"

The next time this movie was on the movie channel, I watched it again. I began to appreciate the actors' performances, as well as the glimpses into the culture of Tokyo.

The unspoken romantic feelings between Bob and Charlotte are wonderful, and it was refreshing to have a movie that convincingly portrayed a bond between two characters without having them rip their clothes off. We can see that they're attracted to each other, but they also know that they have other obligations. Heartbreaking, but beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Best Hellsing on DVD.......2007-08-30

If you are looking for the best Hellsing anime, this is the one. Though some may complain how it doesn't follow the manga all the way through its run when it does seperate it does it well. The animation isn't as flashy as its newer Ultimates counterpart, but it is done well, fits the theme and is consistant, something the newer one would benefit from.

The characters are fleshed out fairly well in this version of the series and the mood, atmosphere, soundtrack, storytelling, are all very well done. You have a tendency to get into the characters of this version than in the newer one which relies more on action to drive it, this is especailly true of Integra and Seras, though Sera could do to be less timid. The english Dub is also very good, and as a whole elevates the series, given its location and subject matter.

I have never read the manga, my first exposure to Hellsing was this series, I have seen the first three volumes of the new one and without a doubt this version is the superior overall series so far, even if it does not follow the manga religiously.

    I highly recommend this series.

5 out of 5 stars Short but Awesome.......2007-08-25

First off, it's worth noting that this anime series is not really about plot subtleties or detailed storytelling. The plot is basic in the extreme (seek and destroy) so if that is what you're looking for, look elsewhere.

Also, this is not a series for children as violence, language, sexuality, and sadism are all to be found in abundance.

This is a series which basically has two major appeals:

    1. While the plot is simplistic, the triad of main characters display a wide range of subtle behavioral undertones. The odd moments of caring displayed by Alucard, the background of Integra, and the progression of Seras are all intriguing to watch.

    2. The real reason to watch Hellsing is simple. Alucard is 9 kinds of kickass, and his battle scenes are a blast to watch. I seldom enjoy "overpowered" characters, but the way Alucard always holds back and toys with his opponents makes the moments when he truly unleashes his powers really fun.

On the whole, great show, very compelling to watch. I started, and was unable to stop until I watched the whole show in one sitting.

Finally, if you find that you like this show, I'd highly recommend checking out the OVAs, as they feature some really great, higher production value versions of content in the series. (The Luke Valentine battle in particular looks MUCH better in the OVA)

    3 out of 5 stars Mediocre .......2007-08-17

The show was pretty good until it stopped following the manga wich is about half way through. Its also pretty over priced for 13 episodes, if your a big fan of the hellsing manga like me this may dissappoint you.

    1 out of 5 stars A pointless Action flick.......2007-08-03

The problem with this series is that it costs to much for a short series and that the series doesnt really have much of an ending. If you like action packed vampire flicks get Vampire Hunter D and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust

    5 out of 5 stars Entertaining.......2007-06-12

For an anime it was a great watch. Some bits seemed to drag along and not get directly to the point. I like to see action so that has a huge influence on my review.

It doesn't get any better than giant monsters fighting each other and tearing up the town. TOHO had the best suit actors on their payroll as well as the best special effects crew of the time. And if you pay attention, you will learn that it's wrong to pollute the Earth and that we caused the mess we're in. You have to love a movie that has wanton destruction and yet delivers a "green" message. Enjoy!

The original Japanese theatrical release is in pristine condition however Classic Media/Toho studios should have also cleaned up and remastered the American English dubbed version. That was annoying as one who would prefer to watch the American version and not have to concentrate on reading subtitles is distracted by the the uncleaned film print presented.

The dvd also offers a couple of extra features which consist of stills of the monsters that star in the film and a biography(forgotten who).
Stills include text and other film appearances of the monsters-with title and year given.

Back in 1998, we got a VHS release of the movie for the first time in YEARS. The film was pan and scan and was discolored and grainy. Not the perfect print for such a classic but we really didn't complain much because we finally got a chance to own the film.

Classic Media did a great job in bringing us a widescreen version of the U.S. release and the Toho Scope Japanese version! The coloring is great, the sound is wonderful, and there is considerably much less grain than on the VHS release a handful of years earlier!

There are some nice extras on this DVD including a trailer, a poster slide-show, and film commentary! This film has just enough goodies on it to keep die-hard G-Fans entertained and satisfied! Highly recommended!

3 out of 5 stars not much action.......2007-07-30

Doesn't anyone realize that this movie doesn't have a whole lot of action?
The battle between king ghidorah, rodan, mothra, and godzilla was short but good. The only problem was that in the middle of it it was interupted by the people. I thought that it could have been better but it was good.

2 out of 5 stars monster round table.......2007-07-29

If you are anxious to see a Japanese monster movie about Rodan, Godzilla and Mothra having a round table discussion about whether to unite and save the world from Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster, this is your film. Director Ishiro Honda delivers just that.

If, though, you want to see Honda's GREATEST film and one of the most horrifying and unsettling films of the sixties you should skip the above and check out Mantango. There are no monsters here over six feet tall, Tokyo is not threatened, no buildings are crushed, no tin tanks are destroyed, no thousands of people flee in terror, there is no radioactive breath anywhere and the Japanese army is nowhere in sight.

I guess this world is big enough for both.

The Ultimate OVA series (2006) continues the popular vampire hunter broadcast series Hellsing (2001), both of which were based on the manga by Kouta Hirano. Vampires are stalking England, which means Sir Integra Hellsing must take them out. Most of this 50-minute segment is devoted to a duel between Hellsing's super-vampire Arucard and Father Alexander Anderson, a bio-engineered vampire in the service of the Vatican's murderous Iscariot Organization. It's a veritable gorefest, but not a particularly original one: the shooting effects are copied from T2, while the ghouls recall The Night of the Living Dead. The dialogue is often unintentionally hilarious: "It's been a while since I had my head cut off." Viewers may be repulsed by the endless sprays of blood, the leering sadism, and misappropriation of religious symbols. (Rated 16 and older, but more appropriate for 18 and older: graphic violence, violence against women, sadism, sexual situations, grotesque imagery, offensive religious imagery, tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars Hellsing: Ultimate Vol 1.......2007-09-04

This will be short and sweet. This anime is awesome! It closely follows the mange and is gory enough for the most bloodthirsty horror freak. They used most of the voice actors from the original OVA. The music isn't as good but the animation is better. Buy this and enjoy!!

5 out of 5 stars Damn fine stuff.......2007-09-01

The tv series is decent but the OVA's are by far more supeior. If you like Hellsing and still haven't checked out this then do so now.

    3 out of 5 stars Expecting more.......2007-08-29

I have never read the original manga. So I am coming at this review directly comparing it to the original anime. And when you do that folks this new series seems to fall quite short.

I have seen the entire original series, while only seeing this vol of the newer series so I will reserve judgement on the rest.

Like other posters have already said this vol mostly rehashes what many have already seen, however does it much faster and with out near the atmosphere and character development of the original anime.

The art while good at times, also drops into silly comedic spots that are not appropriate to the overall theme of the series, I found myself missing the consistant quality of the art of the original.

I have not heard the dubbed track on this vol, so I can't directly compare those, but in the original anime its one of the few times in my opinion the dubbing aids the series far more than leaving it in its original language. As far as the music is concerned, original anime wins out on this again with moody tracks suitable to the theme of the show, while the newer one seems to use a faster pace dance style music at times.

Seras Victoria while far too timid in the original, one of my few complaints for that series, was the character that helped lead you through this world of Hellsing, the newer series she is the victim of a weakening of character, from her change to the vampire, far better represented in the original anime, to those ridiculous changes in art style, adding unneeded comedy to her. She is a shell of a quality character and missed as a point of view character in this new series.

Other key characters while closely resembling there original anime counterparts, are done a disservice by a larger focus, losing some of the mystery and complexity of characters found in the original anime. No character with the possible exception of Anderson is improved in this vol.

To be honest if this series truely represents the manga source material it would honestly put me off the book.

If you are looking for a really good anime of Hellsing, it would do you better to look up the original.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic start to the new series.......2007-08-24

Excellent music and voice cast, superb animation, and a much more accurate portrayal of the source material. Slightly loud sound effects make it a bit of a strain to hear the lines sometimes, but otherwise a great purchase.

    1 out of 5 stars What?!?!.......2007-08-17

Am I the only one that has not been bought off by the company??? Okay, I realize this is just the same story repeated in a new rendition and I have to say some of the art in this is fantastic, BUT there are many flaws I can not see beyond. First, what is going on with the audio track??? The voices are barley audible over the soundtrack that I might as well just turn on the sub-titles, it really drove me nuts! Plus I say the animation is great, but how the hell does someone attract that much glare in the glasses they are wearing? It was ridiculous! I don't know how many reviewers have watched the complete original animation, but the story flow in this one was a complete bore. There is no depth in the characters, the feeling for the Police Girl is completely gone and it seems far too comical. I took this DVD back immediately not even caring that I lost money from it. If you want to waste your time with nothing more than a vampire action disaster, go right ahead.
