Cool OVA.......2007-01-10
This is a good buy. Well worth the money. Although it's a little hard to follow the storyline if you haven't seen the tv series. The OVA's take place in different times from the tv series. But I would recommend this anime.
My two cents on KOR.......2005-10-20
I thought KOR was an entertaining series. Its been years since I have watched this title. The animation wasn't too bad. Watching Godzilla films helped enhance my viewing pleasure. Its a series worth checking. Kasuga is 15 who meets two women Hikaru and Madoka, Hikaru clams she's his girlfriend but Madoka seems to be his true love.
The OVA series that hooked me on anime.......2005-07-27
10 years ago I watched this OVA series on rented VHS tapes (back then, only this set was available in commercial release, the TV series was not released commercially in the US until the late 90's). I believe I could have turned my back on anime at any time... up until I watched these OVAs.
Yes, both the OVAs and the TV series revolves around the high school love triangle between Kyosuke, Madoka, and Hikaru. But for those of us past high school age, there is an element of sweet nostalgia in Orange Road. The memories of loves won, lost, and merely dreamed about come flooding back. "Dance in the memories" is more than just a song title from the series.
Yes, Kyosuke is a wimp, but with a heart of gold. Bear in mind the problem he faces is that he is not sure how Madoka feels about him. In traditional Japanese culture, if the girl refuses the boy's invitation to "go steady", he has no second chance. That's it. End of story. So Kyosuke is tormented... he sees signs that Madoka *might* care for him, then he sees signs that she doesn't. So until he is sure, he waits and dates Madoka's best friend Hikaru.
These episodes flesh out some issues. The OVA "I Was a Cat, I Was a Fish" is the one out of these 8 that I really don't care for. "White Lovers" is, at it's heart, a story of the true depth of Kyosuke's love for Madoka and what he is willing to risk to prove it.... and incidentally one of the all time favorites of a number of long time KOR fans. While the previous reviewer liked the movie "I Want to Return to That Day", many oldtime KOR fans detested it.
Can you do without this set? Sure. But if you enjoy romantic comedy, or if you are a KOR fan, you MUST get this set.
Final episodes, movie, for classic romatic triangle series........2004-01-31
I'm going to approach this differently than most of my reviews, because there's a lot to like about this box set. Saying that, I have to admit that there was not much of a compelling reason story wise to create it. The set consists of three DVDs; the first two each contain four OAV (direct to video) episodes, of Kimagure Orange Road made after the TV series. The third DVD is a series-ending movie. While my overall rating for the set is four stars, the movie rates five stars, therefore, episodes are only fair to good.
What's good about the episodes is the music and animation. Japanese OAV releases generally have a higher standard than the TV series episodes. The quality of the animation lives up to that, and they feature many good songs. Unfortunately, beyond that these are simply fan episodes. Someone determined there was still a market for KOR stuff, and cranked out a very derivative set of episodes. The OAV episodes place the KOR principal characters in mostly rehashed situations, created before in the TV series. They exceeded some of the limits of the Manga, as I would call it, going "too real" without just cause. What I mean is things like adding gunplay to a series that was essentially tame.
The gem of the box set is the movie. It exceeds the limited reality of the TV series as well, but "in a good way". Since it was to be the ending of the KOR series, it ended the key storyline abruptly. The entire KOR series was about the romantic triangle between Kyosuke, and two girls he was involved with, Madoka and Hikaru. The triangle, kept alive, because Kyosuke, was one of "those" anime characters, which cannot make a decision. The series became stale, because most people knew that Madoka was his true love, even though he went with Hikaru, as boyfriend and girlfriend. The movie has a very changed, more adult Kyosuke, making the decision, right or wrong, and then sticking with it. Rarely have more genuine emotions been on display in an anime of this type.
Reasons to buy the box set:
1. Excellent music, a cut above your usual anime music songs.
2. Fine animation quality, OAV releases are high quality in Japan.
3. Great series ending movie, if it has to end this was the way to do it.
Reasons not to buy the box set:
1. Derivative episodes, if you've seen the TV series there's not much new here.
2. Some OAV episodes overstep the "reality" limits the series was based on.
3. The movie (and OVA episodes) is going to be released separately.

Same of the shame, more of the pain.......2005-10-26
Kimagure Orange Road, or just Orange Road, is without doubt the pinnacle of romance anime from the 80s (Or just about ever). Creating a predictable romance triangle, the predictable characters of Kyousuke, Madoka and Hikaru go through predictable escapades and mishaps during their predictable love life in high school.
And still look awesome doing it. Despite some ''cringe-out-loud'' moments, this series continues to manage to captivate. Putting any and all predictability aside, this series has got the heart in the right place and shows it. The animation, while not the best, is enjoyable to watch, both in style and overall quality. The directing is calm, soothing and, when need be, hectic and exciting. The music supports this without fail, and the characters are simply a joy to watch. Add in some comedy that, while it will not always manage to make you laugh, isn't in the slighest unpleasant to look at, and you've got yourself a wonderful way to waste an evening.
At least I did.

KOR makes the path for future Anime Series.......2004-02-01
KOR is a classic Anime from the 80s, which makes the way for series like Tenchi and Ranma 1/2. Its about a boy and his family who have psychic powers, and the friends, love interests and other people they meet along the way. The OVA series steers away from the fantastical bit. Our main character recieves the affections of one girl while wanting them from another. Classic. I wouldn't write it off because it was old.

Revisit Orange Road........2007-06-09
Back In the early 90's when I Started my anime collection. This one of the series. I felled in love with. Now With this movie. I have the whole series on Dvd. I even have all the soundtrack. One thing I was most gratful for was they never Dub. Until New Kimagure Orange road; Summer's Beginning. Because of this, it was the only reason I couldn't give it 5 star's but I enjoyed the Movie. But you must watch the Ova and tv part first.
Over-all One of the Best Teenage romance series on the market.

One of my favs!.......2007-01-10
This movie is one of my all time favorite anime movies. The animation is great and so is the story line. I would definitely recommend this to someone who likes anime and even if you don't like anime, it still has a great storyline!
Different perspective as I grew up.......2005-11-21
I watched KOR when I was a teenager; in fact, my age is about the same as Kyosuke, Madoka, and Hikaru in the show. Surprisingly, I found myself appreciating the animation, especially this final OAV movie and the original movie, more so as a full grown adult right now with kids. The show is about love and commitments one made in life, whatever that might be. While there might be some silliness in the movie (and the original TV show), those silliness only enable the characters and the audience to ask the question "what if's".
The only question I have is why Amazon added "Vol. 1" after the title; this is a movie, not a OAV series.
A nice upbeat final OAV for the series........2005-06-29
First, I should let you know that the DVD I bought had a different cover. Same movie, however.
If you have watched all the TV episodes, the other OAVs, and the final movie for KOR (I want to return to that day--the inevitable and heartrendingly beautiful/painful resolution of the love triangle), you very likely have as much love for the series as I do, and can overlook (or embrace) the occasional bits of cheesy silliness that were present in all of KOR except the final movie, instead submersing yourself in the true beauty and sweetness of the series.
This OAV (which is NOT part of a new series. It's called "new" to show that it comes AFTER "I want to return to that day") has the cheese, and has the sweetness and fun, just like the other OAVs did.
Although I believe this OAV could stand alone, I think it is much better suited to be watched after someone's seen a good portion of the TV episodes, one or two OAVs, and absolutely the Final Movie (which is, IMO, stunningly good.)
This OAV makes a good postscript to the series by showing not only that life and joy and friendship go on, but also showing how they went on in the lives of the characters we've come to love. I'd give it five stars, but not for anyone watching it without having seen the series, so I'm leaving it at four.

The Kimagure Orange Road series centers on a teenage romantic triangle: Hikaru and Madoka were best friends until they fell for Kyosuke, an understated hero with psychic powers. In 1991, the 19-year-old Kyosuke is struck by car and propelled three years into the future, where he tries to understand the changes that have taken place in his world. Madoka and Hikaru have grown up to become a promising songwriter and a student of drama and dance, respectively; the older Kyosuke is a student-photographer on assignment in Bosnia. The problem of two Kyosukes coexisting is played for laughs, including a sequence where the 22-year-old Kyosuke counsels his younger self. The filmmakers expect the viewer to know the characters from the OAVs, although designs have been changed. The result is a Pax-style romantic fantasy, rather than a sci-fi adventure. Suggested rating is 15+: nudity, sexual situations, alcohol and tobacco use. --Charles Solomon

Wholly unnecessary, but reasonably fun for KOR fans........2003-12-06
Given that the original KOR movie ended the series pretty effectively, one would be forgiven for assuming that this followup would be nothing more than a wholly cynical exercise in dead-horse-beating. And it is, to an extent. The nominal premise of the film, in which Kyosuke gets displaced in time after being hit by a car, certainly feels forced. However, as it turns out, the film manages to aquit itself fairly well, and, most importantly, it doesn't compromise the source material.
It's an oddly paced piece of work, to be sure. The bulk of it works at the probably inevitable task of achieving some sort of reconciliation between Kyosuke and Madoka and Hikaru, and then, this accomplished, it suddenly veers jarringly off into 'Kyosuke really, really wants to get laid.' This first is done about as gracefully as one could expect; ie, fairly. It threatens to venture into well-trodden 'allegedly comic misunderstanding' territory at one point, but, surprisingly, it dodges this bullet, for once. Some may complain that the integrity of the events in the first movie is ruined by mitigating the quite violent breaking off of relations, but I don't really see that...it's only natural that, as time does its wound-healing thing, people should mellow out a bit, and, let's face it, Hikaru was treated pretty shabbily in the original; it seems only fair. Not that fairness is always warranted, of course, but in this case it's all good.
But then it just gets sort of weird; the material with Kyosuke wanting to have sex with Madoka feels very drawn-out and not a little pointless. Firstly, I find the idea that they didn't consummate their relationship in the two years between the first film and this one VERY hard to swallow, even if we ARE dealing with Anime Romantic Comedy Land, which is known to be inhabited by the most superhumanly restrained people in the universe. And secondly...well, so what? I suppose the creators wanted to finish off the whole enterprise with a bang (okay...poor choice of words), but it's such an inevitable formality that I had difficulty bringing myself to really care. And don't get me started on Kyosuke's impassioned, if not particularly coherent, little speech before the big moment. I found the kiss at the end of the TV series to be much more affecting, honestly.
What else to say...for unknown reasons, this film features new character designs. Less cartoony, perhaps. This doesn't bother me as much as I thought it would, but I still can't say I see the point, although the more mature-looking Hikaru is well-done, once you get over your double-take the first time you see her.
One thing that I found a bit disappointing was the lack of a number of characters from the show. Even if they weren't integral to the plot, it would've been nice to at least see them. I mean, come on, guys, it's not like we're talking great art here; a little pandering to the fans wouldn't kill you. Komatsu and Hatta make brief cameo appearances (which, let's face it, is really all one needs), but Yusaku--who I was quite curious about--is nowhere to be seen, nor are Kazuya or Akane (okay, so she was a minor character, but I still like her and wish she'd been in more than just a few OVAs), or, puzzlingly Kyoksuke's father. But the ultimate insult: no Umao and Uskiko! Come on, guys--get it together here.
I suppose you could watch and more or less understand this film without having seen the earlier material, although I have no idea why you'd want to. As for established KOR fans...well, what's the point in saying anything? Obviously, you're going to see it. And it is unlikely that you'll be particularly disappointed--it's not everything I could have hoped for, but it's not anything I would have dreaded, either. That's pretty good.
The pilot that made a nice end.......2003-09-24
This movie makes a beautiful end to the KOR saga, which is a bit ironic because I got the distinct impression that it was meant to relaunch the series.
It isn't really necessary to have seen the TV series or the OAV's to understand the movie, there is enough background given to give the new viewer an idea of the love triangle that existed in the past, but I do think that some familiarity with the franchise would be helpfull.
KOR, from the series to the movie, has quite a bit of subtle detail, which is why a single error regarding the family name bothered me a little. If you haven't seen the TV series, then you won't notice so I won't say exactly what it is. It's not that important and doesn't detract from the plot of the movie.
I highly recomend this movie to anyone, but be warned, if you're new to KOR it may spark an obsession.
Kimagure Orange Road, A DVD.......2003-03-24
Wonderful anime, this movie was brought to DVD. Kyosuke was hit by a car when he was 19 and supposedly was brought to the time 3 years after and he must go back if he is to survive. Great plot, but a little too much dialogue.

Kimagure Orange Road is the second best anime series ever. Fun and interesting stories, very likable characters, great character designs by the genius Akemi Takada, excellent songs for openings and endings... and the most beautiful girl in anime history: Madoka Ayukawa.
