Musketeers disease .......2007-09-01
MASCOT PICTURES made serials under its own name from 1926 to 1935. After that, MASCOT and four other lesser "Poverty Row" studios were combined under the REPUBLIC PICTURES banner.
THE STORY of THREE MUSKETEERS (1933):
An American pilot rescues two soldiers from certain death at the hands of Berber tribesmen. They later battle El Shaitan-- a man with a mission: the annihilation of all Legionnaires. Not to be confused with the Dumas book of the same name.
CAST:
Jack Mulhall - Clancy
Raymond Hatton - Renard
Francis X. Bushman Jr. - Schmidt
John Wayne - Lt. Tom Wayne
Ruth Hall - Elaine Corday
Lon Chaney Jr. - Lt. Armand Corday [Chs. 1, 10]
Noah Beery Jr. - Noah Stubbs [Chs. 1-2, 10]
Yakima Canutt - El Shaitan, when masked/Legion Officer [Ch. 8] (uncredited)

6. Death's Marathon

MUSKETEERS trivia:
John Wayne appeared in two other MASCOT serials ("Hurricane Express" and "Shadow of the Eagle").
Lon Chaney Jr. received screen credit here as Creighton Chaney.
Top-billed Jack Mulhall was the first to appear in a dual-role in a "talkie," in 1929's DARK STREETS.
Ruth Hall, the only credited woman in MUSKETEERS, was the niece of Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, author of The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
John Wayne and Yakima Canutt (the masked El Shaitan) made screen history in STAGECOACH (1939)-- Wayne on the coach, Canutt below it, as a trampled-upon Indian. Wayne credited Canutt with teaching him how to behave like a cowboy.
JOHN WAYNE - THE EARLY YEARS contains all three serials Duke was in.
NEWLY REMASTERED.......2006-12-13

As the apocalyptic battle approaches, the Dragons of Heaven and the Dragons of Earth assemble in Tokyo. Although the sullen Kamui supposedly holds the key to the outcome, the viewer learns that Fuma, Kotori's athletic older brother, is Kamui's "twin star." (The exact nature of the intimate bond between Kamui and Fuma is hotly debated among X fans.) Satsuki, who communicates directly with computers and prefers the cyber world to reality, helps to locate the mysterious clone Nataku. Subaru, the descendant of a long line of shrine keepers, arrives from Kyoto. With the exception of the ebullient Sorata, these characters are so alienated and self-involved, they make Shinji in Evangelion sound like a party animal. Director Yoshiaki Kawajiri continues to snarl the already tangled narrative in flashbacks, dreams, visions, and the never-ending rain of flowers and feathers. (Rated 16 and older: violence, nudity, minor profanity, grotesque imagery, tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

Incredible and Powerful!!!.......2006-08-22
The outline that follows is an outline that refers to the entire series and spoilers will be included.
To begin with, if you are looking for an anime that is more in the style of Love Hina, than you should skip this one. If on the other hand, you are looking for an anime that is powerful, emotional, has love/romance, great character development and strong story, than you are definitely right here.
Outline of the story:
The story resolves around the Seven guardians of Heaven and the Seven guardians of Earth. The one group wants to preserve earth as it, believes in humanity no matter what they have done to earth, and hope for a better future. The other group wants to erase humanity from the face of earth so that the planet and its other creatures can life in peace etc.
The `problem' is that when watching the show you will - like it or not - agree with both groups (not to mention the fact that there is no `black - white answer' but a grey version (You will have to watch it in order to understand or otherwise I will give the entire show away, sorry guys)). Apart from it, the age of the group members does not matter much; meaning that you will see in both groups' teenagers and adults fighting side-by-side or against each other till death. Others will fight against the other group for their own personal reasons.
The biggest problem however is that there can be only one Kamui (chosen one) and the side he decides to follow will win; but, it proofs that the real Kamui has a twin star, meaning that there is another Kamui out there as well. This will lead to an explosive mixture of emotions. Lovers, who will belong to the opposing group, will be forced to fight till death against each other, brother against brother, best friend against best friend and so forth. To be honest, the story will get very emotional indeed. No matter the age, the group members will fight and die.
As for the action, you will get more than enough. To begin with, the fights occur in both astral plane and our materialistic world. In order to prevent damages in our world, the group members are able to form a kind of a shield, in which most fights happen, and no matter the destruction our reality remains unaltered. That is, if the fights remain inside the shield, something that will not always be the case. In addition, all group members have their own supernatural `super powers' etc. For instance, some can use the five elements, some others are psychics, some others use magic, some take advantage of technology, some bend reality etc.
Who will win in the end and what will be the cost of this destructive victory?
The genre of this anime could be categorized under: fantasy, supernatural, action, and love / romance.
The music that accompanies the show is very well orchestrated and good. Starts with a rock/pop song and ends up with a melancholic ballad. In-between the music changes in accordance with the shows (very good done).
As for the dub, in my humble opinion, it is very good and professional done, in the same level as CB is done.
The animation is excellent.
As for extras, it has more or less the typical stuff: Textless opening and ending, previews, trailers etc.
As for the box-set: The first DVD comes with the box and every DVD you buy it fits in there; imagine it something like a shelf.
As for the story: It is very emotional, has great character development, solid storyline (that moves forth and back, with flashbacks etc.), many twists and is very mature and character driven.
Tip: The first episode, called X-0, of the first DVD is like a prelude and `summation' of the story. If you don't want anything to be given to you in front but want to be glued to your sits from episode one, that skip this one.
Last but not least, is it worth buying or not? In two words: Definitely yes! However, by collecting all 8 volumes the cost may raise around $200. To be honest, it is worth having in your collection but if the cost might seem to you as an obstacle than try to rent it and to watch it. The show is highly recommended!
I hope that I could help you, if so than please click on the yes button below ^_^
SUBARU-KUN!!!.......2004-11-09
X is a beautiful series, which seriously attempts to be an epic in a heartfelt manner (and I only say "attempt" because I'm an english major and have read the real epics). X doesn't just show, it reads. The viewer leaves every episode feeling fulfilled and craving more. This DVD made me especially excited, however, because of the first serious appearence of Subaru-kun, the star of one of my favorite animes, Tokyo Babylon. If you've gotten this far in the series, seriously consider purchasing Tokyo Babylon, to fully understand the tragedy of the encounters of Subaru-kun and Seshiro. If you haven't seen X at all, what are you waiting for, silly? Get Vol. One NOW!!! :)
X Volume 3 Review.......2003-07-15
This volume is great. I would give it 6 stars if possible. I think it is the best of all the volumes at this point. It talks about Satsuki's past and how she found out she was a Dragon of Earth. Fuma's father tells him that he is Kamui's twin star. Fuma then has a vision of the two of them fighting, and then Kamui killing Kotori. Kamui has a cool, exciting fight with a Dragon of Earth, Seishiro Sakurazuka. Fuma steps in and saves them both and Seishiro vanishes. Sorata and Arashi go searching for Subaru Sumeragi, one of the Dragons of Heaven, but Seishiro finds him first and the two have an intense battle. Seishiro leaves during the middle of the fight and Subaru then meets up with Sorata and Arashi. Subaru and Seishiro are my favorite X Characters, and their battle made this volume the greatest. Buy it, it's amazing.
Excellent, but it's no X [One].......2003-06-04
This DVD is just another DVD of a great series. The DVD X [One] blew me away and I immediately bought this DVD as well. This was almost a let-down. It's not a shot at the series, but to the people who are organizing these DVDs for American release. I am seriously sick and tired of 3-episode DVDs. We all know they can put at least 5 episodes on one DVD and when they put 3, they're trying to scam more money from me. For our [item price] we at least deserve 4 episodes!
Great series, but these DVD's aren't really worth the money unless you're really into it. I can't justify [that much] to an episode.
Kamui help us!.......2003-04-19
Well, this is gonna be breif....I am kinda dissapointed in the choppy animation ... and weird coloration... BUT I JUST LOVE THIS SHOW!!! I love X/1999 I kinda love the X movie and now I can have a moving version of the the book (of sorts). Too bad they sliced and diced the actual script of the book....and they twisted the characters around a bit....which I am deeply sadden by....But this installation of the DVDs kinda got me happy again. These are not filler epsidoes (I don't think any of them will be..thank the Dragons of Earth-ahem-Heaven) these are character insights from another point of view. I don't really like the director for twisting around the characters (Kotori) and plots....at all....BUT LO AND BEHOLD...SUBARU!!! This is a great insight (and eye candy) from Tokyo Babylon's Subaru Sumeragi. This is a really cool DVD cuz of him!! It really shows off Subaru's improvement from the Tokyo Babylon Subaru. That's all that I liked from X tv series so far though... I hope to see some keeping with the actual Clamp script soon....and the Dragon's of Earth are not evil!!! They just have a diffrent view on things!!!

The three films in this entry in the Columbia series of Three Stooges shorts are all concerned with World War II anti-Axis plotlines. In "The Yoke's on Me" (1944, short number 79), the boys are less than honorably discharged from the army and want to do their bit by becoming farmers. Cheated into purchasing a tumbledown farm on which the only livestock are a stray duckling and an ostrich, they find themselves chasing three stereotyped Japanese soldiers separated from their submarine with predictable results. It is difficult to overlook the cartoonish treatment of the Japanese, but one must consider the circumstances at the time of filming.
"No Dough Boys" (1944, #82) begins with the Stooges themselves in Japanese military costume posing for a propaganda picture and being chased by a patriotic waiter, whose store just happens to abut that of a Nazi spy (Vernon Dent). The two key gags in this short include Curly's ability to smoke his fist (an idea lifted from the Laurel & Hardy "Blockheads") and the boys attempting an acrobat routine to prove their identities as Japanese. Here the real Japanese are simply menacing rather than clownish.
"Higher Than a Kite" (1943, number 72) is one of the most plotless in the series. Half the film is taken up with the Stooges somewhere in Great Britain trying to find a squeak in a car. ("What does a squeak look like?" asks Curly in a more reasonable moment.) The close-ups of Moe's head caught in a pipe as the other two try to extricate him are painful rather than funny. Hiding from their boss, they find themselves in a bomb that is dropped into a house (in France?) filled with German soldiers. Moe and Curly pose as German officers while Larry does a Carmen Miranda (or Moronica, in this case) drag routine. It is very uneven and stretches too far for laughs, even for this series. --Frank Behrens
Customer Reviews:
Just may be the worst tape........2002-01-17
THE YOKE'S ON ME is a terrible short. This is being too mean to the Japanese. Yes, they were mean at the time, but no reason to rub it in. This short is not shown on TV because of that. I don't see why it shouldn't be on TV. I don't like the short, but no reason to not show it on TV.
NO DOUGH, BOYS is another bad short. This shouldn't be on TV for the same reason as THE YOKE'S ON ME. Once again, a put-down for the Japanese.
I actually like HIGHER THAN A KITE because it's not about the Japanese and not all about World War II. The scene where Moe and Curly play checkers on the world globe is priceless.
This just might be the worst Three Stooges tape.
THE YOKE'S HIGHER THAN US DOUGH BOYS.......2001-07-04
THE YOKE'S ON ME (1944) - A very controversial short. This short is very rarely shown on TV because of the racial overtones of the Japanese soldiers. However, that is a part of history. You just can't hide that! I think this short should be shown on TV, just as often as the other shorts are, and if the TV producers want to be careful, they should just air a disclaimer before the short, explaining the racial stereotypes, and how we were at war with the Japanese at the time.
As for the quality of the short itself, it's not that great. It's pretty slow-paced for a Curly short, and aside from Curly's fandance, there's nothing special or that funny. But I think the banning of this short is ridiculous.
NO DOUGH BOYS (1944) - A funny and interesting short, since the boys are dressed as Japanese soldiers for the entire short. The boys do great jobs and I love the wild acrobatic scenes. Surprised the PC police didn't pull this short along with THE YOKE'S ON ME, due to the Japanese stereotypes.
HIGHER THAN A KITE (1943) - Great short. The first half basically deals with Moe getting his head stuck in a pipe, and Larry and Curly trying many ways to get him out, but the scene is a masterpiece. Hilarious. The second half is great, too, like when Larry dresses up as "Moronica" and swoons Marshal Borring.
Like the THEY STOOGE TO CONGA video, this is an all WWII tape.
Three of their funniest shorts........2000-07-07
This stooge video has the shorts "The Yoke's on Me","No Dough Boys" and "Higher Than A Kite."
All 3 are very funny but my favorite in this video is "Higher Than A Kite."
After messing up in the motorpool, the stooges go into a sewerpipe to escape. Actually, it's not a sewerpipe at all.(That's what the stooges think). It's really a blockbuster bomb that is headed towards Germany!
Great Stooge Classics.......2000-06-26
This is the ultimate package for Stooge fans. It contains all the classic stooge films in their uncut versions. It is a must collection for everyone that even remotely likes the Stooges and the number one gift for a true Stooge maniac. I received this as a gift, and I have spent many hours watching and rewatching the videos. You will not be disappointed with the selection of videos. Most of them are with Curly and a few with Shemp. Must buy, five star selection.
THREE OF THEIR FUNNIEST!!!.......1999-04-12
These three shorts were my very first glimpse into the world of the Stooges. I laughed myself silly on all three of these, and I watched it almost every day I had it out of the video rental place. If you want to laugh, get these three!
