Everything's normal at Furinkan High School--which means everything's chaotic by any reasonable standard. The principal of Furinkan, who sounds like a pidgin English version of a surfer dude, tries to play traditional father to his long-lost progeny, Kuno and Kodochi, in "Dear Daddy." The results are predictably disastrous. Gosunkugi's a new student, so he doesn't understand why Ranma won't let him accept the lunch Akane offers. The indignant Gosunkugi tries to work voodoo on Ranma but only wreaks havoc on Kuno--and himself. Ranma's outraged when a martial artist won't accept his challenge: the newcomer practices Martial Arts Calligraphy--and Ranma's handwriting is atrocious. American viewers may not recognize the ink stones and sticks used in traditional Japanese calligraphy, but they know what happens when Ranma and Happosai get mixed up in anything. Despite the general chaos, these three episodes rank among the tamest in the series, with no gender transformations. Still, Sasuke sums up the whole series when he comments at the end of "Dear Daddy," "After all that, nothing's changed. The family's just as strange as before." Not rated; suitable for ages 12 and up. --Charles Solomon

Not The Best Of Ranma.......2002-02-28
I've seen Ramna at it's best and this just isn't it. But I'm Glad to say for all the ranma fans out there the "Ranma Rhapsody" series does get a whole lot better as it progresses. I suggest RR vol.3. It's pretty good.
Average. Nothing more, nothing less........2001-12-13
I picked up the Digital Dojo box set--which is the first season of Ranma 1/2--and thought it was excellent. I then ordered several discs from this season and was eagerly awaiting them. Unfortunately, this disc can't hold a candle to season one. The story line is just not as interesting as season one--it seems to be more childish. The theme songs aren't as catchy and there are no extras to speak of. Pioneer hasn't even put volume or episode numbers on them, so it's hard to tell which disc is which. The dub voice actors aren't as good as they were for the Digital Dojo; however, the Japanese voice actors are still good.
I'm not saying you shouldn't buy this, but if you haven't seen Digital Dojo yet, pick up that.
OK, I guess.......2001-09-03
I'm a big fan of Ranma 1/2 and thought this volume was dissapointing. The 3 episodes were mediocre at best, while I think the OAVs and 1st couple seasons are WAY better. For die-hard fans only, otherwise, save your money.
Blasé for most, heaven for fans.......2001-08-30
Although extremely happy that Viz has decided to release Ranma on DVD, as a big fan of Ranma, this title was quite disappointing in many ways.
The DVD authoring on this title, was downright, awful. There are no extras, the subtitling was horrible -- much worse than fan subtitles. Hard to read. I really despise subtitles that are expressive to a point, where you have to struggle to read it in order to determine what on earth the person is saying. Put in your head the idea of translating Principal Kuno's Haiwaiian accent... Also the English-voice actor for guy-Ranma is shocking. It must have changed from the OAVs, cos this guy is, in one word, hopeless.
Viz's decision to start releasing from this point in the series (Season 6 out of 7 Seasons) is silly. Most of the people buying this would assume this is Volume 1. It's like Episode 113 (or 95 starting from Nettouhen). How would people know who all the characters are? Viz should release Season 1 and 2 first.
Finally, i agree with other reviews... Where's girl-Ranma?? These were pretty mediocre episodes. The only good episode was the 2nd one on this disc. I'd rent this one and buy it only if you are collecting the series.
good stuff good times.......2001-06-27
very nice and almost worth the money. I just wish that there was more than 3 episodes on it. I like the interchangable language and subtitles.
