Gundamis one of the oldest and most popular franchises in anime history; Gundam Wing, a 49-part series that was broadcast in Japan in 1995-1996, is currently airing on the Cartoon Network.Several story lines unfold against the background of a rebellion by the Space Colonies against the United Earth Sphere Alliance; at the same time, the OZ Special Forces mount a coup d'état against the Alliance. The Colonies send Heero, Duo, Trowa, Quatra, and Chang, the pilots of the Gundam Mobile Suits, to Earth to wreak havoc on military installations. The wiry teenagers find themselves caught up in these interconnected conflicts, fighting OZ leader Treize, his glacial, sadistic, assistant Lady Une, and the masked pilot Zechs, who pursues his own agenda. Although they're heroes of the series, the Gundam pilots often come across as cold, arrogant, and needlessly brash. In the middle of one battle, Chan leaves his indestructible Gundam to fight a duel with Treize using swords. But fans of the series aren't interested in character arcs or plot development: every episode offers lots of elaborate battles between the splendidly designed transforming Gundams and the lesser robot-suits of the villains.
Rating: 8 and older: no nudity or sex; occasional profanity; violence largely restricted to machines attacking each other. --Charles Solomon

Great series.......2004-03-27
BASIC PLOT:
The Gundam Wing series follows the exploits of five young men who pilot mobile suits against the forces of an organization seeking world domination. There's Heero (the main man), Duo (the cool guy), Trowa (the quiet guy), Quatre (the peace-lover), and Wufei (the overconfident hothead.) The battle rages on for forty-nine episodes, and as the series progresses, a number of plot twists keep things interesting. This is a rare example of a series where the characters aren't paper thin - they continue to evolve as the series progresses. This is one of the best anime series out there, as one of the best mecha series.
SERIES OPINIONS:
To put it simply, this is an excellent series. Many fans of the Gundam series call this the best sub-series of all, and honestly, who can blame them? The storyline is great, the animation is great, the characters are great - everything about this series is great. It's good to see the series get a long overdue DVD release in America.
DVD:
These DVDs are good, because they contain several uncut episodes, but they're bad in that they don't contain any special features (that is, other than the very basic DVD stuff.) The series is one of the greatest anime series out there, but don't expect any bonus material.
OVERALL:
Overall this is an excellent anime series, and I recommend it to any anime or mecha fan. If you like either one, this series will not disappoint.
The Plot Thickens..........2003-05-20
The first episode is good, but the second episode has in my opinion the first HUGE plot twist in the series. The Gundam pilots are manipulated by OZ into destroying the same kind of people they're supposed to protect, and this allows OZ to start a world-wide revolution. The Earthsphere Alliance were creampuffs compared to OZ, and now we know why. The Treize Assassination deals with the aftermath of the previous episode, but the real high point is Wu Fei's confrontation with Treize. But is Treize really as bad as he seems?
One of my favorite episodes in the entire Gundam Wing series is episode 9, Portrait of a Ruined Country. This episode focuses primarily on Zechs and his simultaneous attempt to free his home country and master the awesome Mobile Suit Tallgeese. We already know that Zechs is the greatest non-Gundam pilot on earth, but when he first tries to pilot Tallgeese...he nearly dies. The speech he makes about just what exactly the Tallgeese is should NOT be missed, to say nothing of the AWESOME battle scene where he first tries it out. And to top it all off, at the end of the episode Zechs takes off his mask.
And of course it would be cruel of me not to mention the last episode to be found on the dvd, where Heero and Zechs duel for the first time.
This is a great series for people who love Mecha, and Gundam fans in particular. And if you love the first few discs, keep getting more! The series just better and better as it goes along (in character development, action scenes, animation quality, and just plain overall greatness).
OZ has taken Center Stage.......2002-05-12
An Excellent GW DVD if just for Episode 10 Alone!.......2001-11-29
