Before Harry Potter entered Hogwarts Academy, a few students at Kitanohashi High School began using magic to challenge an alien ship that landed on Earth. Takeo, the president of the Magic Club, is a bespectacled nerd who wants to impress girls; the androgynous/transvestite vice president, Aburatsubo, flirts with Takeo. The newest member of the club is enthusiastic but klutzy Sae, who keeps ignoring the efforts of her best friend, Nanaka to get her to quit the club. This slapstick teen comedy began as a six-part OVA in 1996, which was followed the next year by a 13-episode broadcast series. Magic User's Club offers an unremarkable array of characters and standard jokes about cleavage and girl's underwear. The one original touch is the way Takeo's face turns into a sign when he's thinking. It's silly and mildly funny, but hardly memorable. (Rated 13 and older: violence, risqué humor) --Charles SolomonCustomer Reviews:
Not as good as it sounded.......2004-05-09
It looks like the creators wanted to make a space epic, then decided to turn it into a romantic comedy, and finally had to settle with a wacky fanservice comedy. The first episode suffers a few changes of tone before one of the main characters is defined enough to understand him.
I'm watching it with my two daughters, currently aged 6 and 9. They don't understand the more mature moments, but if that sort of thing offends you you'll definitely want to avoid this show, especially with its homosexual overtones.
There's just enough plot and character development to keep me watching until the end. It's generally cute, despite the whiny nature of its female lead. There are better things to watch with your kids.
Especially with only two episodes on each of the first three disks, these DVDs will go on my "trade" shelf.

Magic Users Club takes the cake!.......2002-08-05
very funny, but watch more than once........2002-08-03
One day, a giant bell comes out of the sky and takes over the world. But people quickly learned that if they did nothing, the bell would leave them along. so now a few years later, everyone is used to it. Takakura, president of the magic users club (a deerly under-rated club which has to borrow space from the manga club) likes to impress the female members, and accidentally promises to destroy the bell himself.
Usually eveyone just ignores Takakura's boasts, but this time Sae (a new female member) get's jazzed up and convinces them to go and tackle the bell, ewven though they can't even fly their brooms yet.
Alot has to happen in the first episode, so the characters start out rather flat and simple. But as the show progresses they become much more 3-dimensional. The english dub is also fairly decent. Something rare these days. Lisa Ortez gives a fine performance as always, and Jammie McGoginal does a bang up job as Takakura (the perverted club president).
As for the Dvd, it's very well put together and has some good features such as creditless openings and artwork. Also, from disk 2 through the end, each dvd has an outtake reel with the english dub actors. A rare and hilarious feature that more anime should have. They even have a "slates" reel which are the original japanese text scenes (they put text over some so you can understand what's going on, so they included the original scenes as a bonus).
if you're looking for mindless entertainment, this is it. If you like perverted jokes, this is it. If you like a fun story, this is it. If you like serious stories with blood and guts, look someplace else.

The broadcast series of Magic User's Club picks up where the OVA left off in 1997, with Takeo, Aburatsubo, Sae, and Nanaka causing new trouble. The space bell has been transformed into a giant cherry tree, so the club members cope with fairly mundane problems, rather than alien mecha attacks. In "Sae, the Bathroom, and the Door," a teleportation spell goes haywire, causing doors to lead to unexpected places--Takeo's refrigerator opens into Sae's bathroom, while Nanaka's closet connects to Aburatsubo's attic. But most of the humor quickly falls into formulae: people overhear lines that suggest Aburatsubo is seducing Takeo, but the reality is relatively innocent. Takeo goes into spasms of lust at the sight of the manga club president's redoubtable bustline (or the thought of a girl); Sae stumbles and bumbles along, but comes out on top. (Rated 13 and older: violence, nudity, risqué humor) --Charles SolomonDescription
The aliens have been defeated, and the Bell has been transformed into a gigantic cherry tree. Now, the brave Magic User's Club must reconvene to deal with a new problem. Sae, Nanaka, Takeo and Aburatsubo are all on the case. Akane would be with them, of course, but she has a date. And, what is the problem our intrepid Magic Club must solve? Well, apparently some inconsiderate persons left a skyscraper sized cherry tree in the middle of Tokyo, and it's become a major inconvenience to everyone in the city. Even though they have no idea who could have done such a thing, the Club feels strangely responsible and spring into action!Customer Reviews:

Magic Users Club Fun.......2002-03-12
With that out of the way...Magic Users Club is great! The characters are still lovable and Takeo is still picturing indecent things. I enjoy how the show feels real, not everyday is there some huge magical delemia (not as big as aliens anyway) the magic is used kind of to help along a storyline of the characters relationships with eachother. The humor is still great and on the dvd you get flubs of the voice actors wich is both fun and revealing!
Japanese Cultural Humor 101?.......2001-11-18
There's the battle for club membership and loyality. There are weird giant aliens. You have the female head of the Manga club being attacked by tentcles. And there was, well just get the disk. You will be really happy you did.
A friend who was over watching the episode turned to me after the last episode on the disk and demanded more. She was really unhappy that I didn't have the whole series on hand.
Young adults must defeat a great "enemy".......2001-11-03
A great Bell arrives from outer space and promptly disables all military attacks on it. Strangely, it does so non-violently. That is, while it destroys military hardware it scans for life forms first and avoids killing people, disintegrating hardware around them. And it only seems to reacts when attacked.
The Magic User's Club is a small group of teenagers who devote themselves to eliminating this "enemy". Magic is "real"; they chant spells and can make objects fly or tranfsorm, for example. There's the nerd boy who's the center of action (he gets to panties and brassier fantasy stages), who is even leched on by an androgynous member of the club. The young girl who's the primary female is a less-than-skilled magic user learning to fly her broom. The setting is modern day: cars, airplanes, and the club wears retro witch outfits when in the club (with a more modern cut - like bee-bop Holloween), but otherwise dress normal outside the club - shorts, tank tops, etc.
The overall theme of this is like most other modern Japanese anime: bright colors, very good animation, risque humor, modern setting, young people, obsession with big boobs in some cases (the teacher especially), rivallry between Magic Users Clubs and a Comic Book Club. It could be termed good clean teenage fun. Not so mature as to label it adult fair, but sexy enough to make it a step above adolescent cartoons.
I rated it an honest 3 because some people rate everything 5 even if they think it's trash. For me, 3 means it's a fairly good, middle-of-the line movie, worth a buy for intense anime fans and worth a rent for normal people. I save 4 and 5s for movies that grabbed me and run off, and which I end up hankering for more of.
This was entertaining, but not super-fabulous.

This situation calls for drastic action, and the entire Magic Club is prepared to get as far away as possible and retreat to the beach. Quick all around information:
Ok you got your basic characters....well, not quite. Three girls (the new members) are all out of the wak...Akane is a supermodel and only in her freshman year. she also is always up in the clouds. Nanaka trys being normal but ends up finding she dosn't like it too much. And then theres Sae....ummm sae's a clutz she has little concentration her magic always messes up she is constently trying to be the best magition in the entire world...and doing it wiht out realizing it. Then the senoir members come into acount. Takeo is a pervert. plain and simple. he thinks wrong thoughts 24 seven, he also seems to genuinely like Sae...but is too shy. then Aburastubo is gay, he shows it non stop and hay its him! he is great at everything and hates it. and his mother is a little.....abnormal even for aburatsubo. he has this group of girls who hang around him calling him his Eyeiness. Then there Ms. Miyama. the hugest breasts you'll see EVER and the attitude to match,Along with a tormenting streck that honestly makes us feel sorry for takeo, except when we finnally realize she likes him alot, then we just get confused. She holds her own club (comic) and orders the enitre staff as if they were her own servents. she is also the reason the club is in such a small place. Odd? stragne? out of wak you might say? nope! compleatly normal. at least if you compare it to what the club members have to go though, deal with, and fix on a constant basis.

Another two great episodes!.......2001-08-22
In these episodes we see Akane-chan push her luck a little too far with the magic, narrowly missing being taken prisoner by the Bell, and we get a glimpse into Takeo-kun's past when the gang go to a training camp at the beach.
Some brilliant Aburatsubo and Takeo interaction, with Sae (the star) being her usual annoying self.
Can't wait for the last two eps of this quality OAV!

The End.. Or Is It?.......2001-04-28
As you know, the bell is taking a lot of action against the magic club as they have a big interest in it. The Magic Club feels they need to stop it in some way. Basically, the fate of the world rests in these high school students' hands (in some funny sort of way ^^;). Don't take it too dramatically because this anime is just too funny. I don't know what else I can say without spoiling the ending.
The ending is really amazing and it just makes you want to get so much more. There were story elements that I wondered about. You can't say much in just 6 short 30-minute episodes. The major part is probably the story with the magician, Jeff, that Sae meets and has a little trouble remembering.
Anyway, a great opening to the series that makes me want more and that's what the TV series is for! I mean, who wouldn't want more Maho Tsukaitai?
