Before Harry Potter entered Hogwarts Academy, a few students at Kitanohashi High School began using magic to challenge an alien ship that landed on Earth. Takeo, the president of the Magic Club, is a bespectacled nerd who wants to impress girls; the androgynous/transvestite vice president, Aburatsubo, flirts with Takeo. The newest member of the club is enthusiastic but klutzy Sae, who keeps ignoring the efforts of her best friend, Nanaka to get her to quit the club. This slapstick teen comedy began as a six-part OVA in 1996, which was followed the next year by a 13-episode broadcast series. Magic User's Club offers an unremarkable array of characters and standard jokes about cleavage and girl's underwear. The one original touch is the way Takeo's face turns into a sign when he's thinking. It's silly and mildly funny, but hardly memorable. (Rated 13 and older: violence, risqué humor) --Charles Solomon

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as it sounded.......2004-05-09

This was on my wish list because other reviews made it sound so good. It was recommended because I liked Love Hina and Kiki's Delivery Service. Unfortunately, Magic User's Club just barely doesn't make the grade.

It looks like the creators wanted to make a space epic, then decided to turn it into a romantic comedy, and finally had to settle with a wacky fanservice comedy. The first episode suffers a few changes of tone before one of the main characters is defined enough to understand him.

I'm watching it with my two daughters, currently aged 6 and 9. They don't understand the more mature moments, but if that sort of thing offends you you'll definitely want to avoid this show, especially with its homosexual overtones.

There's just enough plot and character development to keep me watching until the end. It's generally cute, despite the whiny nature of its female lead. There are better things to watch with your kids.

Especially with only two episodes on each of the first three disks, these DVDs will go on my "trade" shelf.

5 out of 5 stars Not what you think........2003-04-22

This is one of the best anime series out there.
Totally underrated and under-appreciated.
Its likening to Sailor Moon is not unprecedented. (Ikuko Itoh and Junichi Sato were key creators in both.)
It is true you only get 2 Episodes on each of the first 3 discs (the OVA) but don't believe reviews that say it's too short. There are 14 episodes from Maho Tsukai TV (made after the OVA) on discs 4 to 7 which makes this a longer series than Serial Experiments Lain and/or Hellsing and at this price, a much better buy!

5 out of 5 stars Underrated Anime.......2003-01-13

Magic User's Club (Maho Tsukai Tai) is one of those anime titles that hasn't really made a big name for itself. Which is a shame as the animation is top notch on the OVA episodes. (1-6 on DVDs 1, 2 and 3) This is thanks to the input of Ikuko Ito (Sailor Moon , R, S and SuperS) This is the work she made instead of staying to work on Sailor Moon Stars. The colours are bold and cheerful and the animation is smooth and fun.
The series itself comes in two parts; The OVA episodes and the TV episodes. The OVA is far better visually and by means of storyline, but both are funny and follow the exploits of humourous and loveable characters.
This is a series that should be more popular but isn't. Something I attribute to the 'more mature' content and the sub-standard english language version. Luckily the japanese dialogue version with english subtitles is selectable.
Anyone who enjoys the likeable aspects of Sailor Moon and the adult humour of Uncut episodes of Tenchi Muyo! will love this series. (and the subbed version features the voice talent of Masaya Onosaka who has played Jadeite in Sailor Moon and Vash The Stampede from Trigun)

5 out of 5 stars Magic Users Club takes the cake!.......2002-08-05

Magic Users Club gives off the feeling that its going to be a cheap anime, with some good laughs. Actually, the animation is great, and it's insanely funny. It's always a bit weird, but they manage to pull everything together to make it great. This is the best new anime out there and a MUST SEE! Everyone I know that has watched it LOVES it, and it's growing in popularity!

5 out of 5 stars very funny, but watch more than once........2002-08-03

This series took me a while to get into. It's sort of confusing if you don't pay attention to every single episode.

One day, a giant bell comes out of the sky and takes over the world. But people quickly learned that if they did nothing, the bell would leave them along. so now a few years later, everyone is used to it. Takakura, president of the magic users club (a deerly under-rated club which has to borrow space from the manga club) likes to impress the female members, and accidentally promises to destroy the bell himself.

Usually eveyone just ignores Takakura's boasts, but this time Sae (a new female member) get's jazzed up and convinces them to go and tackle the bell, ewven though they can't even fly their brooms yet.

Alot has to happen in the first episode, so the characters start out rather flat and simple. But as the show progresses they become much more 3-dimensional. The english dub is also fairly decent. Something rare these days. Lisa Ortez gives a fine performance as always, and Jammie McGoginal does a bang up job as Takakura (the perverted club president).

As for the Dvd, it's very well put together and has some good features such as creditless openings and artwork. Also, from disk 2 through the end, each dvd has an outtake reel with the english dub actors. A rare and hilarious feature that more anime should have. They even have a "slates" reel which are the original japanese text scenes (they put text over some so you can understand what's going on, so they included the original scenes as a bonus).

if you're looking for mindless entertainment, this is it. If you like perverted jokes, this is it. If you like a fun story, this is it. If you like serious stories with blood and guts, look someplace else.

The broadcast series of Magic User's Club picks up where the OVA left off in 1997, with Takeo, Aburatsubo, Sae, and Nanaka causing new trouble. The space bell has been transformed into a giant cherry tree, so the club members cope with fairly mundane problems, rather than alien mecha attacks. In "Sae, the Bathroom, and the Door," a teleportation spell goes haywire, causing doors to lead to unexpected places--Takeo's refrigerator opens into Sae's bathroom, while Nanaka's closet connects to Aburatsubo's attic. But most of the humor quickly falls into formulae: people overhear lines that suggest Aburatsubo is seducing Takeo, but the reality is relatively innocent. Takeo goes into spasms of lust at the sight of the manga club president's redoubtable bustline (or the thought of a girl); Sae stumbles and bumbles along, but comes out on top. (Rated 13 and older: violence, nudity, risqué humor) --Charles Solomon

Description

The aliens have been defeated, and the Bell has been transformed into a gigantic cherry tree. Now, the brave Magic User's Club must reconvene to deal with a new problem. Sae, Nanaka, Takeo and Aburatsubo are all on the case. Akane would be with them, of course, but she has a date. And, what is the problem our intrepid Magic Club must solve? Well, apparently some inconsiderate persons left a skyscraper sized cherry tree in the middle of Tokyo, and it's become a major inconvenience to everyone in the city. Even though they have no idea who could have done such a thing, the Club feels strangely responsible and spring into action!

1 out of 5 stars Boring!!!.......2004-06-18

This is one of the worst anime I have ever seen. It was so boring and stupid and made no sense at all. I guess it would have helped if I had bought the previous three volumes.
The voice acting was ok, although I only listened to the English. The opening theme song was horrible and I didn't like the excessive fan service. It was kind of annoying.
I hope I don't run across another mindless anime like Magic User's Club EVER again.

1 out of 5 stars I HATED IT.......2002-12-21

I did not enjoy this DVD one bit. It did not make any sense, probably because I did not even watch any of the first 3 DVDS. I think all the imagining of undressing and big ... are a mockery to young girls and women, and I do not approve of people watching it. I hope it gets better, but until it does, this is the only installment I will buy of it.

4 out of 5 stars Magic Users Club Fun.......2002-03-12

This is the first part of the television series after the OAV. I think the Theme song for the show [stunk] and should have stayed with the one used previously. I also don't get how little "Jeffy" plays a part and why she suddenly has a penpal named Micky she can just tell everything too.

With that out of the way...Magic Users Club is great! The characters are still lovable and Takeo is still picturing indecent things. I enjoy how the show feels real, not everyday is there some huge magical delemia (not as big as aliens anyway) the magic is used kind of to help along a storyline of the characters relationships with eachother. The humor is still great and on the dvd you get flubs of the voice actors wich is both fun and revealing!

5 out of 5 stars Japanese Cultural Humor 101?.......2001-11-18

Now I'm just a Baka Gajinn, but I was able to catch many of the insider cultural references and jokes.

There's the battle for club membership and loyality. There are weird giant aliens. You have the female head of the Manga club being attacked by tentcles. And there was, well just get the disk. You will be really happy you did.

A friend who was over watching the episode turned to me after the last episode on the disk and demanded more. She was really unhappy that I didn't have the whole series on hand.

3 out of 5 stars Young adults must defeat a great "enemy".......2001-11-03

When the movie started, I kept stopping it and starting it, trying to figure out why the sound wasn't working. Then I let it play: the sound was fine, it's just that the directors were true to reality: the opening scene features the arrival of the great bell from space and since space is vacume sound doesn't travel (sound being the vibration of air...).

A great Bell arrives from outer space and promptly disables all military attacks on it. Strangely, it does so non-violently. That is, while it destroys military hardware it scans for life forms first and avoids killing people, disintegrating hardware around them. And it only seems to reacts when attacked.

The Magic User's Club is a small group of teenagers who devote themselves to eliminating this "enemy". Magic is "real"; they chant spells and can make objects fly or tranfsorm, for example. There's the nerd boy who's the center of action (he gets to panties and brassier fantasy stages), who is even leched on by an androgynous member of the club. The young girl who's the primary female is a less-than-skilled magic user learning to fly her broom. The setting is modern day: cars, airplanes, and the club wears retro witch outfits when in the club (with a more modern cut - like bee-bop Holloween), but otherwise dress normal outside the club - shorts, tank tops, etc.

The overall theme of this is like most other modern Japanese anime: bright colors, very good animation, risque humor, modern setting, young people, obsession with big boobs in some cases (the teacher especially), rivallry between Magic Users Clubs and a Comic Book Club. It could be termed good clean teenage fun. Not so mature as to label it adult fair, but sexy enough to make it a step above adolescent cartoons.

I rated it an honest 3 because some people rate everything 5 even if they think it's trash. For me, 3 means it's a fairly good, middle-of-the line movie, worth a buy for intense anime fans and worth a rent for normal people. I save 4 and 5s for movies that grabbed me and run off, and which I end up hankering for more of.

This was entertaining, but not super-fabulous.

it is very sad that this is the last disk of Magic Users Club. My friends and I have looked forward to each dvd as they came out, after my friend picked up the first disk at an anime convention. If you haven't seen this series, it is great! And the best part is the outtakes.. So, saddness abounds as we come to the last dvd of this great anime.

5 out of 5 stars The End of the Magic User's Club.......2002-04-27

Great anime! Heard from someone that this is the very last of season. It went really good. You find out a little bit that happens with Takeo and Sae. You even get to see who Mickey is. Which I was personnaly was thinking was like Jeffy (her teddy bear from hte OAV's). Overall it was really good and I dont want to ruin the story for anyone or the ending so i will leave it at this. Enjoy :O)

5 out of 5 stars Simply love this Series.......2002-06-24

This series is simply delightful. For Those not familiar with the Magic Users Club, it is about a group of student, 5 to be exact, whom are endowed with magic and in a club at the Kitanohashi Highschool in Tokyo. I got hooked on this series starting with the OAVs, in which a giant bell came from Outer Space spreading the message that it was here to take over.Throughout the OAV relationships began to form between Sae and Takeo, Aburatsubo and Nanaka, and Akana and Minawa (which you don't see in the TV series anymore. Well anyway at the end Sae used her magic to turn the giant bell into a cherry blossom tree, which then started the TV series. When I first got the TV series, I was reluctant cause I knew that sometimes the makers of the series spends all the time and effort in a OAV then skimps a little on a continuation. This TV series was different. It still has the hilarious humor and the great moments I loved in the OAV. Anyway in the 3rd DVD, A Magic Kiss, it is the time of the Culture Festival at the school, and Sae is doing everything she can to help the Magic Club participate but she ends up being left all alone to read fortunes for the festival in the Club Room. Takeo is busy fighting with Miyama, Abaratsubo is basically in every club, Nanaka is busy with the Film Club, and Akane gets dragged into some Costume and Singing thing.Sae begins to try the Fortune spell and fails, then the Mysterious Blond Hair boy/girl shows up and wants his fortune read, but Sae gets the spell right and the boy dissappears then a girl sees all the fortune cards floating and an hour later people are lining at the door, but not for fortunes, they just want the crackers she gives out. After a while, the rest of the Club members end up meeting and figure out that Sae is the only one doing fortunes and go to the club room to help out.The ending sort of made me sad cause Sae worked really hard on the banner thing for the festival and now its all torn down in a big pile by the school. In the next episode, Sae and Nanaka end up being dragged to a Drama Club audition by Akane. Sae goes to the bathroom and spots the mysterious blond haired person and the end up running down a dark corridor only to find the Sae ends up back in the Bathroom alone again. They also find out that the person is Jurachy Jinno (you find out who he really is in the next and last DVD). In the last episode, Sae is going back to her home because her cousin is getting married and she gets to see all the horses (they like to play with her hair) and she ends up using the flying spell without her magic wand. While flying Jinno shows up and tells her something like Magic is Fun and Do More, she then loses her focus and falls. That night she goes to her room and looks out the window and Jinno is floating there, she opens the window and Jinno kisses her. Sae immeadeatily calls Takeo and tells him that Jinno was at her window, but he says that is immpossible because Jinno was in Tokyo just a while ago, and Jinno joins the Magic Club and his magic skills are very advanced. Thats the end of this DVD. The next one gets even better and there is a guest apperance by Miki which made me really happy. She uses really neat magic but I won't spoil the ending, but I'm sort of sad that this is the end of the series. Well anyway I hope you enjoy this series as much as I do.

4 out of 5 stars Its funny...plain and simple.......2002-02-22

Maho Suki Tai (magic user's club TV)is a continuation of the OAV (episodes 1-6) and a new adventure all in its self. have fun and a barrel of laughs!

Quick all around information:

Ok you got your basic characters....well, not quite. Three girls (the new members) are all out of the wak...Akane is a supermodel and only in her freshman year. she also is always up in the clouds. Nanaka trys being normal but ends up finding she dosn't like it too much. And then theres Sae....ummm sae's a clutz she has little concentration her magic always messes up she is constently trying to be the best magition in the entire world...and doing it wiht out realizing it. Then the senoir members come into acount. Takeo is a pervert. plain and simple. he thinks wrong thoughts 24 seven, he also seems to genuinely like Sae...but is too shy. then Aburastubo is gay, he shows it non stop and hay its him! he is great at everything and hates it. and his mother is a little.....abnormal even for aburatsubo. he has this group of girls who hang around him calling him his Eyeiness. Then there Ms. Miyama. the hugest breasts you'll see EVER and the attitude to match,Along with a tormenting streck that honestly makes us feel sorry for takeo, except when we finnally realize she likes him alot, then we just get confused. She holds her own club (comic) and orders the enitre staff as if they were her own servents. she is also the reason the club is in such a small place. Odd? stragne? out of wak you might say? nope! compleatly normal. at least if you compare it to what the club members have to go though, deal with, and fix on a constant basis.

1 out of 5 stars My secret wish.......2002-02-16

I love this series. It's about a high school magic club that sometimes stumbles upon working magic. There is a love triangle that is very funny . This dvd was good on the story but in some places the animation looked choppy. I also don't like the opening and ending credits

5 out of 5 stars Good.......2003-02-11

There was some very interesting information about Takakura's past, and how he became a magician.
We also found out how these two reporters fit into the main story.

5 out of 5 stars Another two great episodes!.......2001-08-22

I know these DVD's only have two episodes per, but this is one of the few shows I buy despite that. (And don't worry, the TV episodes which begin after the 3rd DVD will have 100mins per).

In these episodes we see Akane-chan push her luck a little too far with the magic, narrowly missing being taken prisoner by the Bell, and we get a glimpse into Takeo-kun's past when the gang go to a training camp at the beach.

Some brilliant Aburatsubo and Takeo interaction, with Sae (the star) being her usual annoying self.

Can't wait for the last two eps of this quality OAV!

5 out of 5 stars The plot thickens.......2001-02-27

Now that all the main characters have been introdueced, it's time to really get into the story with these next two episodes. In these episodes, we get to see some very nice moments and more perversion than you can stand! The funniest episode of the entire OAV is on this disc: the flying underwear episode. So if you're prepared to laugh your head off (and cry your eyes out), this is the must-get volume.

5 out of 5 stars This is the first "ending" of Maho Tsukai Tai.......2003-02-21

Sai gets kidnapped here, and the group has to save her. They cast a replacement spell, but it goes horribly wrong and they all get stuck there except Takakura. There's this one scene that's really interesting, because they use people as brooms. Anyway, Sae learns to believe in herself in defeats the Bell with an elaborate magic swirl.

5 out of 5 stars The End.. Or Is It?.......2001-04-28

Containing episodes 5 and 6 of the great Maho Tsukaitai OAV series, this concludes the story and dilemma that Sae and the Magic Club had to face against the bell.

As you know, the bell is taking a lot of action against the magic club as they have a big interest in it. The Magic Club feels they need to stop it in some way. Basically, the fate of the world rests in these high school students' hands (in some funny sort of way ^^;). Don't take it too dramatically because this anime is just too funny. I don't know what else I can say without spoiling the ending.

The ending is really amazing and it just makes you want to get so much more. There were story elements that I wondered about. You can't say much in just 6 short 30-minute episodes. The major part is probably the story with the magician, Jeff, that Sae meets and has a little trouble remembering.

Anyway, a great opening to the series that makes me want more and that's what the TV series is for! I mean, who wouldn't want more Maho Tsukaitai?

4 out of 5 stars GREAT,GREAT,GREAT.......2001-04-17

This DVD is great. It is basically about a girl named Sae Sawanoguchi, who has magical powers, along with 4 other people who must save the world from aliens while going through the troubles of high school. The first DVD contains the 1st & 2nd episodes which begins on a lesson on flying.Sae isn't to good at it though, but she gets the hang of it,sort of.This is a must for any anime fan. It's really good.
