Executive-produced by Superman Returns director Bryan Singer and narrated by star Kevin Spacey, Look, Up in the Sky: The Amazing Story of Superman is an exhaustive, nearly two-hour documentary covering over 60 years of the Man of Steel. It begins with the early work of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster leading to the 1938 Action Comics debut of Superman, then continues through the Max Fleischer cartoons, the Columbia serials, to the 1950s Adventures of Superman series and the tragic suicide of its star, George Reeves. Then it's on to the 1966 Broadway musical, the 1970s feature films (including screen tests of Stockard Channing and Lesley Anne Warren), the paralysis and death of star Christopher Reeve, the subsequent TV series Lois & Clark and Smallville, and the 2006 feature Superman Returns. The documentary also discusses Superman's transformations during World War II, the atomic age, and the 1960s; events in the comic books such as John Byrne's reboot and The Death of Superman; and obscurities such as a pilot for The Adventures of Superpup and the TV-musical version of It's a Bird… It's a Plane… It's Superman. Interview subjects range from two-production stars such as Noel Neill and Jack Larson (who were in both Adventures of Superman and Superman Returns), and Annette O'Toole (Superman III and Smallville) to producer Ilya Salkind, director Richard Donner, Margot Kidder, Stan Lee, Dean Cain, and Brandon Routh. The animated series deserves more coverage, and some interviewees are conspicuously absent--no surprise Lois & Clark's Teri Hatcher couldn't find the time, but what about Smallville's Tom Welling?--but overall it's an impressive and engaging examination of the DC Comics icon. --David Horiuchi

The Amazing Story of Superman.......2007-08-23

This is one of the most extensive Superman documentaries in the market right now. The only repair I have is the superficial attention given to the comic book of the character. I wish they could have gotten John Byrne interviewed for this special. This documentary is an excellent addition to any Superman fan.

Image quality and sound on this DVD are excellent. This DVD has no extra features other than Chapter Search and Subtitles.

A great overview.......2007-08-21

This DVD is nearly perfect in its scope. Starting all the way back with creators Siegel & Schuster and covering virtually all aspects of the character through to the present "Superman Returns" movie. I especially loved seeing the key scenes from George Reeves "I Love Lucy" appearance, as well as Christopher Reeves' "Smallville" cameo.

If you're a Kal-El freak like the rest of us, you need this film in your collection.

I enjoyed every moment of it from the early years to the present. I have all six seasons of the Adventures Of Superman w/George Reeves on DVD. I highly recommend this for every fan of The Man of Steel.

Documenting the birth and evolution of Superman.......2007-07-08

The idea of a super hero, it has been said, is that it teaches us to think beyond our limitations. This particular hero has entered and been part of the American psyche as much as Hercules was part of ancient Greece. Very entertaining as well as informative. For many it will touch a good nostalgic cord.

There's something inherently cool about Superman, and there always has been. Maybe it's the way his alter ego, Clark Kent, seems like a geeky outsider which finds a lot in common with the general public.

Perhaps it's the kid in all of us which wishes they had the ability to fly, or super human strength, or x-ray vision.

Whatever the case, you're fall into one of two categories. Either you're an obsessive fan who works Superman into each and every one of your works (like comedian Jerry Seinfeld) or you're the casual fan who really enjoys the movies, but doesn't have a shrine dedicated to the hero from planet Krypton (like me.)

From the legends humble beginnings spawned from the imagination of two young guys from Cleveland, Ohio to the pop cultrual phenomenon known worldwide and every place between. This fascinating history of the famed DC comics figure is a visual stunner.

Throughout the years Superman has been a comic book, a cartoon, a movie franchise, a tv show, even a failed broadway musical. He's been taken seriously and ridiculed. He's been praised and balked at.

However, the constant remains, as the viewer witnesses; Superman is what all humans should be. He has morals, and he stands up for all that is right in the world.

I recommend this DVD simply because, like I said, it's fascinating. It's amazing how many actors once portrayed Superman or Lois Lane. Along with the changes and tranformations the comic book and many characters have endured. The tragedies involved with a few (namely George Reeves and Christopher Reeve.)

A Tight Little Story.......2006-11-06

It's Hitchcock like in it's presentation that admits you into a very short segment of our hero's life, but one momentous enough to change his life forever. I also like being fooled by the story teller into reaching for the wrong conclusions before all is finally made known to me. A good yarn, as Mark Twain might say. William Bendix does a great job of sustaining the suspense throughout the film.

My Kind of movie!!!.......2006-03-14

I really enjoyed this flick. Had me guessing all the way. This film is very enjoyable...with just enough suspense and twists to keep you enthralled, while giving you a wonderful picture of 1940 small town America...complete with old homes, good manners and old fashioned Christmas tress. If you love good old movies that you can really enjoy and that leave you with a good feeling when they're through...buy this movie and you won't be sorry?

Not Film Noir.......2006-01-18

You may be disappointed with this film if you are expecting classic American film noir. It's more of a 1940s version of Matlock or Murder, She Wrote. As others have pointed ot, the cover has nothing to do with this film. The cover scene leads one to believe it's film noir (the title certainly suggests the genre) and my guess is that it was done on purpose to mislead for sales purposes. Considering the cost, I felt that I had my money's worth. The picture is clear (though not a restored print) and the film itself is entertaining. William Bendix is never bad performance wise. To me, he's one of the most likeable character actors the American cinema ever produced. If you see this film, I'm sure you'll be entertained. If you don't see it, you'll not have missed anything in my view.

A Sweet-Natured, Friendly Murder Mystery In A Small Town.......2006-01-13

Can a murder mystery be sweet-natured? Yes, when it's Cover-Up, a well-crafted B movie programer put together by experienced pros.

Insurance investigator Sam Donovan (Dennis O'Keefe, who co-wrote the script) arrives in a small town a few days before Christmas to look into the apparent suicide of an intensely disliked resident. The man has left a $20,000 insurance policy with a double indemnity clause. Sam points out to Sheriff Larry Best (William Bendix) that if murder happened the policy will pay $40,000. The sheriff is friendly but unhelpful. "Look, Sam," he says, "take my advice. Don't be so all fired anxious to pay double indemnity on this case. Why don't you forget about it? Go on home."

The sheriff says it was suicide, but there was no gun by the corpse, no powder burns and, at first, he denies a bullet was even found. Sam starts poking around, but everyone says it had to be suicide even though any number of the townspeople had motive. The dead man, the sheriff says, "was a blight on the whole community." Sam meets Anita Weatherby (Barbara Britton), the daughter of the town's banker. They start to get serious, but she wants him to stop looking, especially when her father might be involved. Sam, however, doesn't like murder and keeps pushing the case. He finally sets a clever trap, figures out the identity of the murderer...and has to make a tough decision. Let's just say the movie takes place over Christmas and Sam makes the right decision.

This is a well-crafted look at a friendly small town. Main Street has two-story brick shops with the bus depot on the corner. The houses have wide porches and picket fences in front. People don't lock their front doors. The big event will soon be the lighting of the community Christmas tree in the town square, with everyone bundled up in scarves and coats and there'll be presents for all the kids. Don't fool yourself, though. There are plenty of suspects.

The actors, especially William Bendix and Dennis O'Keefe, do fine jobs. Bendix gives Sheriff Best just enough complexity that you're never sure what his game is, or whether he's just being friendly or something more sinister. O'Keefe plays the big city investigator with a nice mixture of toughness and puzzlement. He wants to catch the murderer, but he's come to like many of the people, including the banker's daughter, and he's increasingly reluctant to hurt anyone. Dora Merande, one of Hollywood's great character actresses, does a memorable job as the Weatherby's astringent but caring maid.

And as to that last decision Sam must make when he's discovered the murderer? He has to take a moment or two to think about things. "Like the sheriff is so fond of saying," he finally tells those with him in the murderer's living room, "I'm not much of a detective."

To avoid confusion, remember that the photo on the DVD cover has no connection to the movie. For some reason, someone pulled a scene from a completely different film to use. The DVD is bare bones. While there are chapter stops, there is no menu and no extras. The picture and audio are better than I would have expected. The movie is easy to watch if you're not a perfectionist.

If you liked "T-Men" or "Raw Deal" I think you'll like this movie. Granted, the insurance sub plot is odd and not explanined very well, but Dennis O'Keefe really shines. William Bendix is suprisingly good.

Too silly to work as a police series, but too violent to play as a comedy, this over-the-top series vacillates between extremes but never achieves a satisfactory resolution. The Warrior Strike Team represents the elite of the Tokyo police force in the not-too-distant future. Except for Yuji, the lone, ineffectual male, its members are women who seem to specialize in skimpy outfits: blond heroine Rio, sharpshooter Maya, computer expert Lelica--aided by techno-wizard Nanvel and shrewd commander Maki. They're pitted against a gang of ruthless criminals who have created a "virtual drug," a sort of electronic mind-control system. The screenplay by Katsuhiko Kochiba and Sumio Uetake tries to build suspense, then undercuts it with slapstick sexual humor and vice versa. Episode 3 begins with the perennially broke Rio trying to sell her used underwear to a sex-shop dealer but ends with a violent bloodbath in which her best friend is killed. When Rio sobs over her friend's murder, it's staged so that the camera is peeking up her skirt. Many anime series successfully juggle comedy and violent conflicts (Cowboy Bebop, Gunsmith Cats, for example) but Burn-Up W never gels. Good Anime.......2005-09-01

This is a Very nicely done Anime. One of the better ones I think but not for children. So if you are 18 and older you would enjoy it very much. The animation on it is wonderful and the story line is basic. Not hard to understand. I would not hold your breath for it to be on American TV. Go get the DVD ot tape.

Terrorists, virtual idols and financial woes........2004-09-19

Team Warrior is a team put together to deal with speical problems, like terroists and kidnapped virtual idols. But the team sometimes acts special themselves, being both greedy and violent, they end up causing as much damage as the criminals of Neo-Tokyo. Lets not forget the nude bungee jump and the giant anti-android mecha.
I really enjoyed the second episode, with the attack android, and these 4 episodes of Burn-Up W are the foundation for the 13 episodes in Burn-Up Excess.
Not much depth, but tons of fun.

Good Anime To Start.......2004-07-08

I would like to first say that this was the very first Anime I ever saw and since then I've loved it as well as a small group of other anime. The characters are funny and you've gota love that hair they have. The only boy in the show is a prick which is always nice. :) Wouldn't recommend it for small children, but for teens and adults, I STRONGLY recommend it.

Anime Fanservice ^^.......2004-04-27

Burn Up W, What can I say? Team Warrior has to uncover a conspiracy behind mind altering drugs. But the fanservice is great. Light nudity here and there but lots of jiggling cleavage and panty shots.Id recommend this and Burn Up Excess to anyone into comedy and police Anime. This DVD has great extras and plenty shots of Rio but not enough of Maya.... Anyway if you like the pervertive yet shy guy Yuji or the gun crazy Maya.Get this DVD

Very Nice.......2002-06-16

This one had me laughing alot, I will say that, sadly it was mostly at the terrible voice acting and dubbing skills, those were pretty terrible. I watched in in Japanese after and still laughed, but this time it was at the jokes. Needless to say, this one will make you laugh.

There aren't many features on this one, but it is set up nice and it includes all 4 episodes from the Warrior series, follow up to the original Burn Up, which was a little superior in places. As with DP Flash and the style of redoing older anime in a new spectrum, this is one of those that faired pretty well in the attempt to keep the trend moving and will probably fair pretty well in time, better than DP Flash in most cases in the superior storylines, animation and humor.

Interesting as a cultural history of the 1930's.......2003-11-02

A Great Depression morality tale, wherein the outlaws are really good boys who love their mother, and the capitalists and banker are really black-hearted crooks who prey on the innocent. I'd give it one star for its sheer tedium but a very youthful Roy and Trigger look terrific and who doesn't like Gabby Hayes? As usual in these old oaters, the horseriding is spectacular. Roy has one love song, while playing the pump organ. The movie inspired me to look up the history of the James gang to find out what they were actually like.

Light-hearted and silly.......2006-04-14

I did not have high expectations for this one, so I was rewarded on some levels and satisfactorily underwhelmed on others. The story centers around a Secret Special Team of cops that respond to particular missions for reward money. So basically they are mercenaries who moonlight as cops, or vice versa. Terrorist attacks, to kidnappings, to being body guards, to tracking down peeping toms who steal young girl's underwear - they handle all the "tough" questions. It does not hurt then, that the three main characters are very attractive, have perfect bodies, and are extremely busty. This DVD wastes no time getting you up close and personal with the star's assets and will even allow you to turn on a "boing counter" to help you keep track of bouncy cleavage shots each girl gets. Rio is the main character, and has the largest chest of course. She is somewhat of a clutz, very loud and whiny and is always broke. Yuji is the token guy, who lusts after Rio, but can't get the time of day, and apparently serves the group no other purpose but to bumble around and make lewd comments directed towards Rio. Maya is the "brawn" of the group. She is the weapons master, sniper, demolitions expert. She is always complaining that she hasn't gotten to blow stuff up or shoot somebody in every episode. Then there's the ultra cool, calm commander lady, cute computer tech girl, and other random prettiness sprinkled in to round out the cast. The episodes start out very light and trite, but by the last episode takes a very serious turn when people start actually dying. Has some nudity and language, and of course lots of bodacious boobs and cleavage, but nothing too bad.

Its one of those anime's that keeps its promises when you read the cover or the back cover and it does the way you depict it. Its a really likeable anime I don't really know if it should be classified with other anime but its funny and it gots its serious momments from time to time. I must add i watched it after i watched Burn up Excess so i came it being a skeptical at first but it turn out to be really good. Better than the series.
