Great but incomplete.......2005-12-19
Yay, another OAV without prerequesite manga!.......2004-01-08
I, like many others, bought this anime because the box art was pretty. And while I admit that I was disappointed with the short length, I still enjoyed it. Its not so much that the plot is incomplete, as its just not fully introduced. What is covered by these two episodes is essentially the first two chapters in a seven volume series.
After watching Gestalt, I did a little research on it. Sifting through massive amounts of Gestalt therapy pages (o_O talk about a pain in my bum), I was rewarded with information on the lovely manga that spawned this annoyingly short OAV. I found out it was based on a manga by the wonderful Kouga Yun, who, for some reason, has this problem which her long running series getting crammed into short OAV series (go watch Earthian and you'll know what I mean). I also discovered that there was no prayer (at least at that time- its not impossible now) of getting a translation of the manga over here- Gestalt, like Earthian, is a shonen-ai series.
Now, I'm not going to say why it is, because that would be a huge major spoiler. But it annoyed me none the less. But what with Gravitation and FAKE being released over here, its actually not completely unlikely that we'll be seeing something of Kouga Yun's translated soon, Earthian at the very least.
Eh, anyways, I don't think there's anything in here that would really offend anyone- the plot hasn't gone into shonen-ai territory yet, and I didn't notice anything else about it to be particularly "iffy".
Good but incomplete.......2003-02-27
On the bright side, the character designs are awesome and the story is fairly original. I like how Ohri, being a mute at the beginning, has to speak with those boxes that RPG game characters use. Cute!
If you have ever seen (or heard of) the video game series/OAV series "Angelique", then you will find that some of the characters (just Olivier, really) look like a cross between several "Angie" characters. My best friend pointed that out and I have never been able to watch it Gestalt without thinking that.
So, please watch this, but understand that it is NOT the whole series.

Sorry if I haven't helped you at all in your decision. Many people have found this to be a great series and wish for it to be longer. Personally I wouldn't care if there was more or not. I just didn't find it intrusting at all.
Beautiful animation, but that's all it Gestalt really has to offer.

Tensions between reality and the cyber-realm of the "the World" intensify as Wave Master Tsukasa remains trapped within the game, unlike the other characters who log on and off when they choose. Bear believes that Tsukasa is actually a girl in a coma whose consciousness has become divorced from her physical existence, but Tsukasa dismisses this notion. As they search for the mysterious Key of the Twilight, the characters converge on an upside-down dungeon that echoes Befuddle Hall in Winsor McCay's Little Nemo in Slumberland. Crim remembers how to reach it from earlier versions of the game; Tsukasa simply teleports there. Confronted by an aged man who "failed as a father," Tsukasa announces, "I may have found it"--only to be struck down by the Puss-in-Boots figure who has guided him. Every revelation introduces new mysteries as this intriguing adventure continues. (Rated 13 and older: violence) --Charles SolomonDescription

Argh..........2003-12-20
Now, at first I loved .Hack//Sign. I was captivated by the entire concept of character relationships inside an online game. But soon, the effect wore off. The episodes became so bland and monotonous, even major events in the series (like the last episode in Gestalt) failed to rekindle my interest in Tsukasa's plight. Most of the scenes just feel like filler... as if .Hack//Sign, up to this point in the series at least, could have been done with half the episodes.
As for the soundtrack, it's mediocre. A few good instrumental songs, but nothing to scream about.
But if you like the .Hack video games, I'm sure you will enjoy this series more than I. It just seems to me that there are better animes out there that focus on character development... even if they do lack .Hack//Sign's original concept.
If you've sincerely enjoyed .Hack//Sign up to Gestalt, then you will most likely enjoy this DVD. If you're having doubts about where this series is going, than you may want to save your money.

.hack//sign - Gestalt.......2003-10-28
If you are looking for a really fast paced series then I would not recommend this one, but if you are looking for a story with an intricate plot, developed characters, and a theme that asks some very key questions about the worlds (both online and off) then I would recommend this one.
