Dead Zone AKA Return My Gohan. The first Dragon Ball Z movie.

INTRODUCTION:
The Dragon Ball Z series is one of the finest animes out there, as any fan of Japanese animation will tell you. The series has a "love it or hate it" reputation, but those fans who get into the series are totally immersed by it for a number of reasons. Young people love the series for the fast-paced action and adventure, while older fans enjoy it for the sheer number of characters, and the way they are developed and evolve over the course of time. It's no wonder the series is considered Akira Toriyama's magnum opus, and by far the best of the three Dragon Ball series. When Toei animation made Dragon Ball into an anime, they didn't copy Toriyama's mangas verbatim. They added in many sagas and plot elements not in the manga, often as a result so that the manga and anime were released at the same pace. Toei even created movies based on the series! There were thirteen movies, two television specials, and one OVA/OAV. While not usually canon to the storyline, they are an undeniable part of the Dragon Ball Z franchise that can't be ignored.

OVERVIEW:
This is the first of the thirteen Dragon Ball Z movies.

THE STORY:
It's a year before Dragon Ball Z begins, and four years since Goku defeated Piccolo Jr. at the World Martial Arts Tournament. Goku has settled down in a peaceful life with new new wife Chi Chi and son, Gohan. Everything is going great until monsters attack Chi Chi and the Ox King, and kidnap Gohan. Garlic Jr., a demon who is the son of a being who wanted to ascend to the role of Kami but didn't succeed (due to his evil motives), is out for revenge. He wants to wipe out the world's inhabitants and create a new dark age. Goku sets off to rescue his son, and save the world once again.

REVIEW OF STORY:
A lot of people tend to bash this movie, and I don't really see why. It's a great story (a nice "prequel to DBZ itself.) The action here is considerably more hand-to-hand (as opposed to energy attacks) than in later DBZ sagas/stories/movies/etc., which is a nice change from what you may be used to. Piccolo's scenes (particularly the one where he launches an all-out assault on one of Garlic's henches) are excellent. Gohan gets two hilarious scenes, but I won't spoil them (of course plenty of other reviews do, so if you're curious, just read them.) Overall it's a good story. A bit boring at times and not the best, but it works.

OFFICIAL?
Not likely. Not only did this story (like all the movies) not occur in the original manga, but there are too many plot holes. Goku's friends all know Gohan here, but didn't know him one year later when Z begins. Same with Gohan's hidden power, which surprised Goku and Piccolo in the series despite them seeing it in this movie. Garlic Jr. wants immortality, but tries to kill Kami/Piccolo - which would have rendered the Dragon Balls useless had his assault succeeded. Weird. Ultimately, the movie doesn't fit in the storyline (rendering the anime-only Garlic Jr. saga false as well), but it possibly could have happened in the alternate Future Trunks timeline.

REVIEW OF DVD:
There are two releases of this film on DVD - Pioneer and FUNimation.

The Pioneer DVD is poorly designed in that the movie starts automatically and the menus are difficult to navigate. However, it has better bonus features than the newer FUNimation DVD, not to mention a better dub (see the next section of my review for more information.) Get this DVD if you plan to watch the dub more often than the sub.

The FUNimation DVD has easy-to-navigate menus, and a better Japanese subtitled version, thanks to the always-great translating skills of Steven J. Simmons. While the Pioneer sub version uses English-ized versions of Japanese titles/terms, Simmons' subtitles retain Japanese titles (Kun. Sama, etc.) However it has weak bonus material. Get this DVD is you plan to watch the sub more often than the dub.

THE DUBBED VERSION:
There are two dubs of this movie - Pioneer and FUNimation.

Pioneer's dub of Dead Zone is PHENOMENAL. It has the original Japanese score as background music, and the dialogue is almost identical to the Japanese version. My only issues with the dub are the choices of some of the voice actors - this is when Peter Kelamis took over as Goku, and he couldn't hold a candle to the earlier Ian James Corlett. Likewise, Roshi has this horrendous squeaky voice, but he's only in the movie for less than a minute, so no biggie there. By far the better of the two dubs. Get this DVD if you prefer watching the dub.

FUNimation's dub? Not so good. The original Japanese score is replaced by the music you'd expect in a dubbed DBZ movie, the "Gohan is drunk" scene is ruined, and a ton of dialogue was changed around. Why couldn't they just copy Pioneer's script verbatim with the newer FUNimation voice actors? But this DVD does feature a better and more accurate subbed version, so you should get this DVD if you're gonna be watching the original Japanese version more often.

OVERALL:
Good movie. Get the Pioneer DVD if you like dubbed DBZ, and get the FUNimation DVD (available in a box with the other first two movies) if you prefer the Japanese versions.

The First and the Best.......2006-01-26

Of all the numerous DBZ American movie releases (discounting The History of Trunks and Bardock the Father of Goku) Dead Zone was the first and the best, and the only one to actually have some life in the series. In many ways, it's an introduction to the DBZ series, as it introduces Goku as he is currently, shows us what he's been up to, and brings in his son, Gohan. Along with that, Piccolo and Krillin join the action.

And in this one, the bad guy wins. Garlic Jr., who later has a saga between Freeza and Trunks, starts the movie by collecting the Dragon Balls and making his wish for immortality with the Eternal Dragon. But, while obtaining the balls, Garlic Jr. kidnaps Gohan, who wears the 4-star ball on a hat, and thus Goku gets involved. In an attempt to save his son, Goku, with Krillin's help, and eventually Piccolo's help as well, battles Garlic Jr.'s numerous, spice-related henchmen until the final, inevitable showdown with the immortal Garlic Jr., who has not only a powerful fighting form, but the Dead Zone sucking in the Earth into its Limbo as well. And then, Gohan stirs...

This movie carries itself with some great action, and in this one it has yet to become pointless. Enemies aren't suddenly introduced to make the movie longer. We know who Goku will face from the start. Along with that, it has some pretty funny moments, like Gohan's tripping scene--he accidentally eats a drug-laced fruit--which ends with Gohan peeing on Krillin's head.

Unfortunately, this movie started the never-ending trend of keeping the "movie" length less than an hour. Everything in this movie, and the ones to come, seem jammed in. Something you rarely see in the DBZ series is a fight that lasts less than five minutes. Most go into episode after episode. Maybe this was a good thing about the movie, but you kind of get used to something and to have it suddenly stop is kind of a jarring feeling.

Still, Dead Zone is the best of the movies, with some good action and laughs. And the good thing about this movie is that anyone could pick it up and enjoy it, whether you're a new fan or a long-standing one. And if you haven't yet seen this and you are a fan, then pick this up.

A Very Good Remake.......2005-08-04

I bought the movie last saturday and i watched when i got home. I thoguht it was better than the original movie because it's the way it was supposed to be made. I always say, "The original is the best, unless it's uncut." After I watched the movie, I watched the commentary. I'm a hard person to make laugh, but the commentary people got me to laugh. I would recommend getting this movie if you've seen the first one. I would also recommend this to any person who hasn't seen this movie before so they can see it the way it was meant to be seen. It is definitely worth the money buying this movie.

Dead Zone.......2005-07-03

I bought the Pioneer version of this a few months before this one came out. The movie was very good, but I didn't like the voices at all and the picture quality was simply awful. But, with this version of it, they use the FUNimation voices, with new music and a new script, which I like better than the Pioneer script. (Which was actually the Japanese script.)

Many people like the Pioneer version over this one becquse they used the Japenese music and dialouge. However, if you want that, just watch the Japenese version of it, on this DVD. (Pioneer always had poor subtitles on their DVD's, but FUnimation always gets the subtitles right.) Also, this is the digitally remastered version, and it looks very, very good.

I'm so glad they're finally releasing the Ultimate Uncut editions. Pioneer took and butchered a great series, cutting the climactic Goku Vegeta battle into utter crap, and ruined the great Namek saga. Finally, we'll see these episodes, (and movies-World's Strongest and Tree of Might are also being re-released) the way they were meant to be seen.

Dragonball Z, the way it was meant to be dubbed!

These movies mark the first time Dragonball Z was made uncut, and used the original Japanese BGM alongside the English dub. It was also the first time any Dragonball Z DVDs contained the original Japanese audio, with English subtitles.

The one thing any new fan of Dragonball Z will notice, however, is that the English dub on here DOES NOT use today's voice actors of Dragonball Z, but rather a select cast from the Canadian dubbing group, Ocean Studios. Now this doesn't take away from the enjoyment by any means, because these guys know how to REALLY act! The English dub on these movies is so ahead of it's time, and there's nothing amiss here. The English dub keeps a dead-on script to the Japanese script, and the actor's deliver it in full. The only real downside to this set, is it's video quality; being an early DVD, it didn't have the encoding or transfer technology that there is today, and it shows. But don't let that stop you from making your decision for these DVDs, as it doesn't take anything away from the enjoyment of these movies. But if your not going for the English dub, and just want the Japanese version with subtitles, DON'T GET THIS SET. Instead get the new "First Strike" boxset, as it contains EXCELLENT subtitles by Steve Simmons, the very famous translator of the series, which he did not translate the subtitles on these DVDs.

The only setback, would be the rarity, and price... Right now, it's alittle overpriced at amazon, I would suggest hunting around on ebay.

I did not buy the boxed set of this, but I have found and bought all three, which took a while because they are so rare. They are rare because they were made by Pioneer, and all the DBZ pioneer tapes are very hard to find.

Movie One:
Dead Zone
I suppose this movie would happen before the show starts, but that's not possible because all the cast knows Gohan already.

In the beginning, Gohan is kidnapped by garlic Jr.'s henchman, and is taken to Garlic jr.'s fortress. Goku and piccolo arrive, shortly followed by Kurririn (Krillin.) They kill the henchman and then Goku and Piccolo fight Garlic Jr. In desperation, Garlic Jr. summons a Dead zone (black hole) but gets sucked in himself.

Movie Two
The World's Strongest
This film could never had happened, because it goes in between the saiyan and Freeza saga, so Piccolo couldn't be alive.

Dr. Kochin summons the Eternal Dragon to free Dr. Wheelo from a block of ice. Then Bulma and Muten Roshi are kidnapped because Dr. wheelo wants the body of the wrold's strongest fighter. Goku arrives, and so does Piccolo and Kurririn. They battle their way through the bio-henchman and then Dr. Wheelo attacks in a giant machine. Goku goes Kaio-Ken X10, but must use a Genki-Dama to finish off Wheelo.

Movie Three:
The Tree of Might
This film could never had happened, because it goes in between the saiyan and Freeza saga, so Piccolo couldn't be alive.

In the beginning, Gohan and Kurririn meet Hyra Dragon in a forest, and the dragon comes to live with Gohan. Then the tree of Might is planted and some saiyan's who survived the destruction of their planet arrive. their leader is Terles, who is very mad at Goku, like all saiyans are. After feire battles and some well chosen swear words, Goku kills Turles and the Tree of might is destroyed.

Running Time: 62 minutes (uncut)

I think these three are the best DBZ movies. They have strong storylines and good diolouge. These movies were done by Pioneer, so the voices are different, some for the better. (Gohan, for one.) Also, these DVD's have better special features than the others, although not by much. I highly reccomend all of these, even if it takes you a whle to track them down.

Dragonballz 1-3.......2004-03-11

Not a bad flick........2007-07-24

This movie is pretty good overall. It is very heavy on action, which leaves the story line a little on the thin side. Not to say that it doesn't make sense. This movie actually could fit in to the story line better than some of the other movies. The basic story line involves a character named Garlic Jr. He wants to gather the Dragonballs to wish for immortality. While searching for the Dragonballs, the last one he needs winds up being the four-star ball, which is in the possesion of Gohan, the son of Goku. Garlic Jr. kidnaps Gohan and is surprised by the high level of power Gohan has at his age, and wants to take him in as his pupil. Goku finds out that Gohan has been kidnapped and quickly retreives the Dragon Radar to locate him. Galic Jr. gets to make his wish before he gets there. Goku teams up with Piccolo, Krillin, and Kami to combat this immortal foe. Garlic Jr. creates a "Dead Zone" to suck Goku and and company in to. Seeing his friends suffering unleashes Gohan's hidden power and he throws Garlic Jr. in to the Dead Zone. Overall, this is a fairly decent DBZ movie.

Barely remember this movie at all..........2005-05-14

I remember seeing this movie on Toonami twice a long time ago. It was pretty good of what I remember. It was edited for TV. I'd only go out and hunt for this DVD if want every DVD cause you're a collector or something. FUNimation is coming out with a new DVD for this movie with the GOOD voice actors and the ORGINIAL japanese version. It comes out May 31, 2005. Get that one instead if you want to see it. I just wanted to say that.

Pretty good......Bad english dub though.......2005-03-13

This is a pretty good movie, with good action and story. However, the english dub brings down he quality. Goku's voice is AWFUL! I'm glad FUNimation changed the voices when they took it over, becuase almost all the voices are bad. Gohan's is really the only voice I liked. When the voices in this movie say lines, they sound really corny. i bet if FUNimation had done the voices for this, it wouldn't have sounded corny. I haven't watched the japenese version of this yet, but I already know the voices on it are better because I've seen other japenese DBZ, and it all has pretty good voices.

My other problem with this DVD is that the menu is too slow. The dragon on the menu says something everytime who choose something. Also, this movie was TOO DARN SHORT! It was only 40 minutes, and it says it was in theaters, which I find hard to believe.

Can't find anywhere to buy since im too poor I barely can afford internet Its a rare vhs I really need it and want it, I look on the road for pennies and things to get, I cant find a place to buy it, I really need this and worlds strongest, I really need them so I'm waiting for amazon.com to get one since my mom doesn't have credit card... my birthday is in 3 days and im not going to get any presents, im too poor, like any of you care, all I know is the movie is between last eps of db and firsts of dbz and Gohan blows Garlic into some like dead zone..... well I wish I had this if they get it in stock I would appreciate it to buy.

Lots of action, not much story..........2004-12-02

There's only so much story you can tell in a 45-minute movie and "Dragon Ball Z: The Movie- Dead Zone" proves this point. The plot is paper-thin and this movie is very heavy on action. To top it off, the animation really isn't all that great. I suppose there's some market for "DBZ," and perhaps I'm not one of them, but I feel like a story would've helped this mini-film a lot. What little story there is involves Goku going to rescue his son Gohan from a weird little guy named Garlic Jr., who has collected all the dragon balls together and wished for immortality. Violence ensues. There are much better anime movies out there. Do you really want to spend your money on this one?
