Ten years after his popular feature Ninja Scroll (1993), Yoshiaki Kawajiri returned to the adventures of super-ninja Jubei Kibagami in a broadcast series. A wanderer who can cleave enemies in two with a single sword-stroke, Jubei gets drawn into a ghoulish war while trying to get a peaceful night's sleep. The Hiruko and Kimon ninja clans are fighting over the mysterious Dragon Stone, which confers extraordinary wealth and power. It's somehow linked to Shigure, a woman whom the ninjas call the Light Maiden. With some faltering help from thief Tsubute and Dakuan, an aged but powerful monk, Jubei sets out to deliver the magical Stone to Shigure. What follows is a repetitious gore-fest: Jubei splits, beheads, and skewers an endless array of bizarre-looking demons. At one point, a ship literally floats away on a sea of blood. Despite some simple computer animated effects, Ninja Scroll looks more like a series from the mid-'80s than 2003. The designs of the characters, endless duels, and meandering storyline recall Fist of the North Star and other early, blood-soaked epics.
The four-disc Ultimate Collection comes loaded with special features and extras, including interviews with the composers, directors, English language director, and principal English voice actors. There are storyboard/animation comparisons, still art galleries, a trivia game, and Weblinks--everything but character arcs and a coherent plot. (Unrated, suitable for ages 17 and older: graphic violence, violence against women, grotesque imagery, nudity, sexual situations, including suggested rape and lesbianism) --Charles Solomon

good series, but not the movie.......2007-07-23
im a big fan of the ninja scroll movie. and so i thought i could buy the series and see wat its like. its a good series overall but dosent live up to the movie. the soundtrack and the animation are pretty good, and of course you have intresting and original cast of bad guys. but the ending leaves you hanging and Sucks really bad. it turned me off to the whole thing. i recommend renting this series instead, but if you really like ninja scroll then go for it.
Weird but good series........2007-07-08
Long story short, this is a weird series. Both in terms of plot and in terms of character design. But, in the end, it works. I did end up enjoying the series despite its obvious quirks...
The final ending seemed like a little bit of a cop-out, but in general, the series was pretty good. Animation was "current" and fluid, story was relatively interesting even if it did seem to start slowly...
So, I'd give it a thumbs up for anyone who likes anime. DVD features are decent. Video was good, sound was good. If you like this title, you'll probably also like Legend of Himiko Complete Collection, Ys Legacy, among others.
AWESOME!!!.......2006-09-25
When I bought this series I though it would continue from where the movie took off. I was wrong, but delightfully so. The story in the series is awesome!!! Its nothing like the movies, but the introduction to so many villans (deamons) and good guys presents a whole new out look at Jubei. He is still one bad dude in the series. I wouls Highly recommend this series to any Ninja Scroll lover!!! The action is just as awesome as the movie, and the blood is to die for!!! Five stars hands down.
Awesome!!!.......2005-11-24
I saw this anime in school with acouple of friends of mine. I thought it was really cool. The story, blood and guts was awesome. This movie's not your typical saturday morning cartoon. It's mainly focussed for more of a mature audience'es. I don't suggest a 10yr old to watch the film.
This is also one of the animes that also got me into the whole anime trend. I had to buy it the next day because I liked it that much. The Story line is abit slow but not that solw. Also it's a bit of old schoolish, it has your 80's style animation. But this dosn't take away from the movie at all. I suggest buying the whole collection, you get your moneys worth. It has tons of extras. It's an awesome DVD set to add to your collection. You will not be disappointed.
Not So Good.......2005-10-12
I hate to admit it, but the Ninja Scroll TV series compares little to what has become a solid member of the anime royalty, Ninja Scroll. The animation is sloppy and only barely compares to that of its movie companion, and characters, both the reaccurring and the new, are very generic (ninja, magical princess, thief, old monk). Not only that, but the story is jumbled and difficult to follow in succession. Truth is you can watch the first two and the last two episodes and get the entire worth of this series. It's one bonus is the inexpensive price-tag for a boxed set.

Adult movie turned into western kiddie cartoon (The thoughts of an Anime Purist).......2006-06-07
Thats right! When I watch this I see heavy influences of western animation which for one make question wether this is an anime or a western cartoon that was created just to be played on cartoon network.
Putting the style aside this would still seem like a kid's cartoon with a simple plot, little character development and the basic formula for an episode being;
Bad guy encounter, Fight (+ Metal guitars), Bad guy defeated, Jubei Moves along... till another bad guy wants a fight and the process is repeated. This can be entertaining if you dont demand much from the show. But predictable fights equal no suspense... and ultimatley no care for what happens next.
The Music "oh god the music!" since when did they have electric guitars in feudal japan. The music isn't authentic to match the times of Jubei's adventures, its an awful clash of repetetive grunge guitar riffs, and it usually kicks in when there's a fight... I guess the director wanted to pump the action scenes up using this approach with their choice of music. It sounds very average, with synth sounds emulating pan pipes etc.
For over 4 episodes I kept hoping for something to hook me in, something to help me forget about the monotomy of encounters. But I could'nt use any more of my time on this series it fell greatly below my expectations and couldn't help feeling the main target audience for the show were early teens. So I felt like I was treated like a kid (in a condesending manner) by series. But I really can't understand why they would choose to make such a series with such a target audience. I mean, the film was an 18 so this series just made no sense to me at all.
I ask alot from my anime so I am quite demanding. If you dont have the same concerns for anime as I do, there's a chance you can find something entertaining here. Though anime's such as Blue Gender makes this 'cartoon' seem like childs play.
Yes, I bought the whole series but I dont have to watch it all. In the 5 months past since I bought it I still haven't.
ninja scroll - the series - ultimate.......2006-02-25
This box set is for the ninja scroll fans it has every thing you could ever want on the series. i brought it and have watched it 4 times over... the trivial game on the bonus disc is great, its so well set up you will love it. Has clan profiles aswell some good stuff i never new. as the title say's this is the ultimate box set (a must get)
Movie was Better.......2006-01-25
..... I'm disapointed in how the series turned out. In the movie, The 8 devil's had supernatural type power's. In the Series, the demons, have a more Futureistic type power. They seem to have a more Alien and Robotic power than the historic type abilities. I won't go into very many detail's, simplely because any true Anime fan will purchase this anyway. I will admit the Artistic value of the series is excellent, Although some charecters seem younger while others seem older. I suggest a try it before you buy it. Local Blockbuster's are ignorant so try a service like Netflix.com to preview. I wish i'd listen to my own advice sometimes LOL.
Super series..........2005-08-18
This series, i think, follows on after the movie. Jubei, after desroying the eight devil's but losing Kagero, finds himself in yet another adventure as his swordsmanship has become famous. He promises a ninja to keep the sacred Dragon stone safe and to give it to the light maiden. But two waring ninja clans also want the stone. Now Jubei must keep the saftey of his new friends (including a return for Dakoan)and the Dragon stone until they find the light maiden. With superb animation, breathtaking battles, and a whole host of characters that really fit, this series has it all for the action anime/manga lover. A must have for all anime fans everywhere and i would definitley recomend it to anyone.
Buy it and enjoy.

G.O.A.T........2007-03-09
CLASSIC.
If you didn't know about it you are probably dissapointed with all of the anime you've seen, with the exception of the Basilisk series.
From a teen to an older person and everyone in between won't be able to deny the genius of this movie.
A must have for any type of DVD collection. College students, or anyone with roommates... lock this one away.
awsome for psp!.......2006-10-07
i have no clue what the above writer is talking about. The umd is near perfect picture quality but yes there is no trailers for anything else and its only in english but umd capasity is not as big as dvd so that is to be expected. No that dosent make up for subtitles or the japanese laguge as i have 2 with both of them so i do agree that this umd is low quality as far as extras go but hey, its for psp.
Great anime - bad presentation.......2005-10-17
Manga has spent very little effort to bring this classic anime to your PSP. The only audio track is the English dub, so therefore there are no subtitles. Worse yet, the movie is presented in a widescreen format -- the original movie was not widescreen, so presentation in this format just cuts off the top and bottom of the scene.
Image quality is soft, and looks to be a straight conversion from the poorly done DVD Manga brought out a few years ago.

I was wrong.......2004-07-14
(THIS REVIEW IS FOR ALL 3 VOLUMES OF THIS SERIES) --- Ninja Scroll TV Series was actually pretty good, regardless of some bad initial reviews I've read online. It's still not as good as the OVA, probably the best anime ever for those into violent swordplay dramas, because that was more serious, had better animation and a great overall "style". Granted TV series do not have the same animation budget as the OVAs and movies. I thoroughly liked the subtle humor in this series, it's not overdone or overexaggerated with funny faces, magical teardrops or the running in place B.S., especially the one-liners from Jubei when he laid the smackdown. The other thing I liked was how creative each ninja bad guy was designed. They seemed to have used the Dragonball Z'd template as every episode introduces 1-3 new ninja enemies that each have a certain look and power that talk a lot of garbage and then get their @sses handed to them. The 2nd Volume is kind of lame as they stretch out too little plot (with a couple of stand alone "one off" episodes), it all could have been wrapped up in 2 episodes instead of 4. Plus they changed the world a bit where there's technology present, at least in regards to some of the ninjas and their powers (i.e. guns, tires, electrical currents, butane flame, etc.)
I read somewhere that the creators wanted to distance themselves from the OVA even though they keep the characters of Jubei and the tiny old man with the hat and staff (can't remember his name). Some of the musical score was created by Kitaro, his first for an anime series. They replayed the same 5 themes over and over again, they are all pretty cool except for one of them which is like aggro 80's rock guitar, I don't know if he wrote that piece as it doesn't sound like his usual new age/traditional "Japanese" style work. Overall this series is definitely worth watching at least once, it's different when compared to the OVA, but still good on it's own merits. Maybe rent it first before buying if you are still on the fence. Good stuff !!!
disappointing graphics, boring plot/dialog.......2004-06-29
The graphics are a big disappointment after watching the movie.
The plot/dialog has dropped to the hero searching for a quiet place to sleep. On his quest to find a good night of sleep, he has to defeat lots of villains/monsters who have magical powers.
I would skip Ninja Scroll the Series. Samurai Deeper Kyo is a better alternative. Rune Soldier is also a better alternative.
not amazing, but good, not the movie, but thats a plus!.......2004-05-14
I remember seeing the Ninja Scroll movie back in 1999 when i was just getting into anime. i thought it was bending backwards to accomodate testosterone-addled teen boys. i still do, but i've learned to appreciate the style and tone of the film.
the series takes a couple of the characters, and the general idea of the movie and completely changes the animation style and tone. its definitely less mindlessly violent, though still violent. i like the fact that its sort of liesurely paced, mainly because Jubei never loses his cool.
its not the greatest series i've ever seen, but its well produced, the music is actually pretty good, and its just fun and playful enough to almost act as a foil to the original film.
i recommend it, but know what you're getting. dont expect just more of what was served up with the original film and you'll enjoy it just fine.

A peak achievement of Japanese anime, Ninja Scroll is a propulsive mix of samurai action adventure and supernatural fantasy from writer-director Yoshiaki Kawajiri (Supernatural Best City). This is defiantly animation for grown-ups, complete with fountains of blood, plenty of naked flesh, and (in both the subtitled and dubbed versions) some decidedly strong language.
