It seemed like a pretty good career move, and for the most part it was. Demi Moore will never top any rational list of great actresses, but as her career stalled in the mid-1990s she had enough internal fire and external physicality to be just right for her title role in G.I. Jane. Her character's name isn't Jane--it's Jordan O'Neil--but the fact that she lacks a penis makes her an immediate standout in her elite training squad of Navy SEALs. She's been recruited as the first female SEAL trainee through a series of backroom political maneuvers, and must prove her military staying power against formidable odds--not the least of which is the abuse of a tyrannical master chief (Viggo Mortensen) who puts her through hell to improve her chances of success. Within the limitations of a glossy star vehicle, director Ridley Scott manages to incorporate the women-in-military issue with considerable impact, and Moore--along with her conspicuous breast enhancements and that memorable head-shaving scene--jumps into the role with everything she's got. Not a great movie by any means, but definitely a rousing crowd pleaser, and it's worth watching just to hear Demi shout the words "Suck my ----!!" (rhymes with "chick"). --Jeff Shannon

Moore stars as gutsy Lieutenant O'Neil, the first woman ever given the opportunity to earn a place in the armed forces most highly skilled combat unit -- the elite Navy SEALS! But the already brutal rigors of training camp turn into an unimaginable test of courage and determination once it becomes clear that no one -- powerful politicians, top military brass, or her male Navy SEAL teammates -- wants her to succeed! A critically acclaimed triumph directed by action hitmaker Ridley Scott (ALIEN, THELMA & LOUISE) -- you'll cheer for G.I. JANE as this brave soldier proves she belongs among the best of the best!

1 out of 5 stars Unrealistic and inaccurate.......2007-05-24

This movie was a real disappointment. Laced with inaccurate facts and utterly unrealistic scenarios. Not worth the watch.

3 out of 5 stars Silly Film Premised Upon a Politically Correct Fantasy.......2007-03-17

The scene where Demi Moore defeats a large man in hand to hand combat is utterly ridiculous. The odds against this happening in the real world are next to zilch. Woman are genetically inferior to men when it comes to physical competition and fighting. At the very best, a well trained female might be able to overpower an athletically inferior male. Other than that, when everything else is equal---the woman is going to lose badly.

Political correctness and wishful thinking dominate so many of the films released by the leftist Hollywood crowd. GI Jane is simply another attempt to deny reality and adhere to the dictates of the feminist movement. It should be listed as a comedy, and not a serious adventure movie.

3 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Movie about Girl Power.......2007-03-10

G.I. Jane is a movie that follows Jordan O'Neil, the first woman to be trained as a Navy Seal. She is a test case, brought in by a female senator who wants to get women in the military. Most men expect her to fail within one week... But they don't know Jordan.

G.I. Jane, directed by Ridley Scott, is the best movie about girl power I have ever seen. The movie shows that women can be equal to men. The strongest element in the movie is therefor loud and clear: Demi Moore. She does a fantastic job portraying O'Neil and gives a powerful and strong performance. The way her character fights her way up in the training course of the Navy SEALS is very interesting and great to watch. She faces it all: from sexual issues to teammates who refuse to work with her. But whatever happends, the character keeps going, and thats what I found a very strong element in the film.
Viggo Mortensen plays the Master Chief, one of the men who makes her stay a lot tougher. It's interesting to see Mortensen in a totally different role than the friendly Aragorn from the Lord of The Rings. He plays a real mean guy, and acts the part perfectly.

Ridley Scott filmed the film in a certain style. This style gives a nice atmosphere but also makes it messy at some points. Some of the action scenes (there aren't that many) are filmed with a shakey zoom in and out camera. Of course it gives the scene a certain feeling, but it leaves some kind of messy impression. So as a whole the film looks a bit messy, but that fact doesn't destroy the enjoyment at all. I was entertained by the film. From the training process to the tense endbattle, it is a great ride. The music is very good and also helps the film considering atmosphere and power. Seeying Demi Moore doing one arm push ups while a great theme is playing gives a great powerboost.
So Demi Moore steals the show, she shows that women can be strong and still be beautiful at the same time, I love that about this film.

4 out of 5 stars Demi Moore Rocks.......2007-02-18

this film was great because Demi Moore plays such a great feminist for military fair treatment. i feel this movie shows a lot of angles of the military that we don't see and other political visions of matters that continue to be of importance today.

    5 out of 5 stars Inspiration.......2007-02-03

I think that every woman should watch this movie. It was a great inspiring movie for my wife. She went on to enlist in the Army.It shows what women can overcome with determination and self confidence.HOORAH!!!!

In the cactus-studded Mexican backcountry of the 1860s, a surly drifter who could easily be mistaken for the Man with No Name becomes protector and lethal helpmate to a red-haired nun wanted by the French for aiding the Juarista revolutionaries. Essentially a two-character showcase for the newly stellar Clint Eastwood and what was beginning to seem the poststellar Shirley MacLaine (subbing for Elizabeth Taylor), this sardonic study in testy collaboration, mutual deception and distrust, and slightly creepy sexual attraction is highly rated by a fairly small number of critics--chiefly, one suspects, for the dual-auteur cachet of having been directed by Don Siegel and based on a story by Budd Boetticher. Others deem it an undersauced spaghetti Western and find that the stars grate on the viewer as well as each other. Cinematography by the great Gabriel Figueroa is some consolation, but... if only Boetticher had been allowed to direct. --Richard T. Jameson

2 out of 5 stars Two stars for two stars.......2007-07-09

Clint and Shirley are stars, for sure. Other than that, this rather ridiculous story doesn't have a great deal to recommend it. After the first sight of the heavy mascara on Shirley's outsize eyelashes you figure there's something not quite kosher about this nun. This makes the relationship between C & S, as they meander their way about the scenery, shooting bad guys and blowing up bridges, somewhat less than credible: either that, or Clint's being extremely dense. His gasp of surprise as one of the sisters grabs Shirley's mule, I mean donkey, shortly before the climax, pegs him as strangely inexperienced with the other sex. Besides which, ignoring the mascara, who could accept Shirley as a nun for starters? Miscast. Siegel seems to have been a competent director, with at least one outstanding movie to his name, but his direction here is not inspired. Unusually excellent review by the Amazon reviewer.

That last comment must have been the kiss of death. The intelligent Amazon review has now, it appears, been removed.

    1 out of 5 stars lame western.......2007-05-22

tough to knock anything the late/capable don siegel helmed... can't say it's his fault, either. film doesn't hold up.
male lead is dull to the point it's painful to watch. the always credible shirley maclaine (particularly in this type of role) does what she can to keep the tale interesting... alas, it is not enough.

even the competant score by gifted Ennio Morricone does not really help matters much.

    5 out of 5 stars Favorite Western.......2007-05-15

I love this movie with Clint Eastwood. I can watch this over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Days of Heaven - Most beautiful music ever composed.......2007-04-06

This review refers to the "Days of Heaven" tracks on the CD. Track 12 on wards. Even though as some reviewers had noted, only 25 minutes. But it's 25 minutes of heavenly music. 25 minutes of soothing lyrical tranquility that breezes past your eardrums so fleetingly, but yet so memorable that it remains with you for the rest of your life.

I have been searching for this soundtrack since 1998. Now, my long wait is over ever since I have received this long-begotten CD in my mail yesterday. With excitement I have not felt since I was kid, I quickly inserted the CD into the DVD-ROM drive. Almost by instinct, I chose the title track "Days of Heaven", the last track on the CD; soft strings that starts slowly and it revolves around a familiar tune that repeats itself again and again for 3 minutes, but it doesn't irritate me one bit, unlike 80's wall-to-wall music.

I am aware that this is not the complete soundtrack to the film. It's sad that the tracks are bundled up like a double feature with Two Mules for Sister Sara. I really hope that whoever is holding onto the rights to the soundtrack, would release an official album. This is the least they can do to "The Maestro", considering that he was given a lifetime Oscar. He's the film composer equivalent of Stanley Kubrick. Geniuses in their respective mediums, but never recognised by the Academy. Not that they need it anyway.

4 out of 5 stars Two mules for sister Sara.......2007-03-24

I collect all of Clint's Western movies. This one is a classic, very funny,
and great irony in it. Well worth the money.

Where Angels Fear to Tread is a Merchant/Ivory production in all but name. Lilia (Helen Mirren, in fine form) is a wealthy widow on holiday in rural Italy with her companion Caroline (a dressed-down Helena Bonham Carter) when she falls for penniless local Gino (Giovanni Guidelli). Her horrified relatives promptly dispatch brother-in-law Philip (Rupert Graves) to break things up, but he's too late--she's already married and, in short order, gives birth to a child. Unfortunately, a happy ending is not to be (not for Lilia, at any rate). As with Maurice (Graves) and Howard's End (Bonham Carter), the author is E.M. Forster, but the director is Charles Sturridge (Brideshead Revisited) and, unlike Room with a View (which featured both actors), the tone is tragic rather than romantic. Another Forster vet, Judy Davis (A Passage to India), plays Lilia's sister-in-law, Harriet, while Oscar winner Rachel Portman composed the enchanting score. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

    Description

While traveling through Italy on an extended vacation, Lilia Heriton (Prime Suspect's Helen Mirren falls for handsome Gino Carella (Fiorile's Giovanni Guidelli) and, against the wishes of her family, decides to stay in Monteriano. Dispatched by self-centered relatives to retrieve her, brother-in-law Philip (Maurice's Rupert Graves) and chaperone Caroline Abbott (Corpse Bride's Helena Bonham Carter) discover startling news that will alter the course of two families forever. Based on the novel by E. M. Forster (Howards End, A Room with a View), this insightful, funny, and sometimes tragic look at the collision of two different cultures features astonishingly beautiful scenery, a haunting score by Academy Award-winning composer Rachel Portman (Emma), and a memorable supporting turn by Emmy-winner Judy Davis (Barton Fink).

While sad, this is a lovely movie. Well acted and beautiful to look at.

3 out of 5 stars Terrible transfer to DVD........2007-06-18

This is one of my favorite movies, and I was thrilled that it was finally available on DVD. But what a disappointment! The disk plays like a worn-out VHS tape. 5 stars for the movie, but no stars for this DVD transfer.

3 out of 5 stars Faithful adaptation of Forster's first novel.......2007-06-12

This filmed version of WHERE ANGELS FEAR TO TREAD is quite faithful to the novel. It is well acted especially by the three female leads - Helen Mirren as the doomed Lilia, Helena Bonham-Carter, looking less attractive than usual, playing the sensible parson's daughter, Caroline, and Judy Davis as the truly horrid spinster Harriet. As in the short novel the contrast between the restrained, judgmental Brits and the passionate warm hearted Italians is a main focus of the story. Perhaps the film deserves more than three stars but like in the book I find the tragic climax caused by the inept meddling of Harriet so maddening that is greatly lessens my enjoyment of the story. To make matters worse Gino's ability to forgive these awful Brits sickens rather than uplifts me. I actually feel guilty for laughing at the genuinely funny moments at the beginning of the story after the awfulness occurrs. And I take another star off because the film really needs to be subtitled due to the soft tones of the speakers as well as the British and Italian accents difficult for American ears to fully understand.

1 out of 5 stars How can you turn a tragic movie into a commedy?.......2006-03-14

The actors are wonderful, but the story it is very sad!!! I wish an old Italian RICH lady would have gone to England and married a poor man!! Than, her Italian family at the end would have killed the baby.......!!! But, this is not important for the writer, as long as there is a happy ending for the english world!!!!

    I hate it !!! hypocrit!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Overlooked fine adaptation of Forster's first novel.......2006-02-19

WHERE ANGELS FEAR TO TREAD got a bit lost in the shuffle of the film adaptations of E. M. Forster's novels that came out in the 1990s. Neither as much of a crowd-pleaser as A ROOM WITH A VIEW, as appealling to a gay audience at MAURICE, or as dignified and prestigious as A PASSAGE TO INDIA, this film instead featured the stars of each of the previous three Forster adaptations--Helena Bonham-Carter, Rupert Graves, and Judy Davis--and cast them very atypically in roles that seemed like poor fits for them each at the time but now in hindsight show off each of their considerable ranges. The widowed Lilia Herriton (the wonderful Helen Mirren, in a terrific performance) travels to Italy while chaperoning her younger neighbor Caroline Aboott (Bonham-Carter) on her first trip there, and marries a handsome young Italian man mostly to escape her interfering in-laws back in suburban London; they dispatch her brother-in-law Philip (Graves) to rescue her, but he is rebuffed by Lilia and her virile lover. But Lilia is miserable in her new mismatched marriage and dies soon after in childbirth; Philip and his puritanical sister Harriet (Davis) then return to Italy with Miss Abbott to get Lilia's baby at any cost. The story has often been classified as a comedy, despite the tragic deaths that occur in it, and the director, Charles Sturridge, plays up the comic elements of it considerably. Judy Davis dominates this film (as she does every film she's ever been in) with a raucous performance as a hysterical prude that is actually nicely shaded; while Bonham-Carter does much with the tough role of the unsteady Miss Abbott. Sturridge probably does not take as much advantage of the beautiful medieval towers of San Gimignano, where the work was filmed, as he should have, and relies too much on conversation (as might be expected from a director who has worked largely in television). But the film has nonetheless aged beautifully over the years (particularly since Davis's wild turn here is now less unexpected, and can be seen as more of a piece with her other later comic performances instead of as an aberration from her more subtle earlier dramatic work), and it deserves rediscovery in an American DVD version.

Impeccably crafted and smarter than your average thriller, Changing Lanes proves that revenge is a dish best served cold. A high-powered attorney (Ben Affleck) learns that lesson the hard way after he flees the scene of an accident involving an insurance salesman (Samuel L. Jackson) who holds a powerful advantage in his retaliatory strike against the lawyer's arrogant behavior. Affleck has everything to gain if he can retrieve a lost document from Jackson, who has everything to lose (wife, family, savings) when threatened with financial sabotage. To his versatile credit, Notting Hill director Roger Michell never plays the race card in this escalating battle of wills, focusing instead on the percolating resentments of men at opposite ends of the economic scale. As he did in Eyes Wide Shut, actor-director Sydney Pollack chillingly embodies the venal elite in a pivotal supporting role, and Changing Lanes potently illustrates the wisdom of heeding a guilty conscience. --Jeff Shannon

2 out of 5 stars Starts Great But Doesn't Follow Through.......2007-08-09

I was really impressed with the first thirty minutes or so of this film. The movie is set in a very specific time and place - a rainy Good Friday in contemporary Manhattan (sometime before 9-11 as we see the World Trade Center and the release date was early 2002). In a morning auto accident hotshot Wall Street lawyer "Gavin" played by a barely adequate Ben Affleck hits a car driven by recovering alcoholic insurance salesman "Doyle" excellently portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson. Both men are made late for court appearances and Affleck's character has inadvertently left an important legal file with Jackson causing repercussions that lead to escalating and improbable acts of revenge during the course of this spring Friday.

One of the problems with the film is Affleck is unbelievable as Gavin as he does not impart the intelligence or drive one would expect to see in a rising Wall Street attorney. One can never imagine him possessing the power and gravitas his father-in law (played by Sydney Pollock) commands as a senior partner. Both his soft spoken pretty wife (Amanda Peet) and his career girl mistress (Toni Collette) are much stronger and decisive. Furthermore Gavin's "ethics crisis" seems phony as we are supposed to believe an insider in a high power firm is suddenly opposed to white collar flimflam when he is not above some evil mischief against Doyle or cheating on his wife. Samuel L. Jackson is excellent as Doyle a man who has anger and alcohol problems but desperately wants to get back in the good graces of his divorcing wife and two sons. However he is so out of control (in one day we see him throw a computer through a bank window, beat up some characters he meets in a bar, attempt to kill Gavin by loosening his wheel and yell and scream at various other people) even when sober that it is difficult to believe he is functioning at all in life let alone on a job with some responsibility. The premise of the film is good but the script needs more believability to rise above the typical Hollywood offering.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Most Underrated Movies in Years.......2007-07-05

South African director Roger Michell directs this hit suspense thriller starring Ben Affleck and Samuel L. Jackson. Michell is actually very skilled and has a tremendous amount of mainstream appeal. He also directed last years Venus, which was another solid film albeit very different from Changing Lanes. Ben Affleck plays Gavin, a successful Wall Street attorney who must file a power of appointment for his company, which is run by his father-in-law played by Sydney Pollack. The document will sign a company over to his law firm and that company is owned by a dying man. Ethical questions certainly surround the document and as things unfold we find out even more. Doyle is played by Samuel L. Jackson, he is an insurance salesman and a recovering alcoholic who wants badly to restore his family before his wife takes his children away to the west coast. We get the feeling that Doyle is a wounded man and his actions are unacceptable at times. Actually both characters are deeply flawed and that is what makes their collision so engaging.

On his way to court to file this crucial document, Gavin gets into a car accident with Doyle. He doesn't prioritize the accident and instead must leave the scene to make it to court on time. Doyle's car will not drive and he is in the middle of a highway median when Gavin takes off in a rush. It of course begins to rain. Doyle himself was on his way to court and when he eventually gets there he finds out that he is too late. His goal was to surprise his wife with a mortgage loan he just received so his family would stay. He was attempting to get some resolution to whatever chaos he may have caused his family before this movie begins. Unfortunately for Gavin the power of appointment was left at the scene of the accident and is in Doyle's possession. Doyle, sour for being left in the rain on the highway and missing his chance in court, refuses to give Gavin the document. Needless to say they both have reasonable vendettas against one another and the battle they have escalates throughout as the film goes forward. These two men are basically dehumanized to one another and it doesn't help matters that they both come from entirely different worlds. They are opposites in life, so they are fundamentally opposed to one another when the first sign of conflict surfaces. It turns out that Changing Lanes evolves into a unique commentary on the darkest sides of human nature. It is unique because we visit these dark decisions by way of likeable and real character portrayals. To avoid spoilers, I won't reveal anymore than I have already.

Samuel L. Jackson is obviously an outstanding actor and he is great here but the most surprising thing is Ben Affleck matches him and then some. It's a shame Ben's reputation as an actor was so horrible at the time Changing Lanes came out because his performance definitely deserved some praise. Sydney Pollack is also outstanding as an exceptionally believable and accessible villain. A lot of the credit goes to the screenplay here for exposing pragmatic reactions to specific circumstances instead of superficial morality. There are no purely ethical and moral figures in Changing Lanes, but then again I can't think of too many in real life either. If they did exist in Changing Lanes then its commentary would be disrupted completely, but I still held out hoping reason would creek into the picture. Chaos reigns here and humanity is called upon to prevail. It puts suspense on a much larger societal scale for me. I know that the ending bothered those hoping for something more retributive but try to see Changing Lanes as a story about healing, not revenge.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible movie ever made.........2007-06-21

"Changing Lanes" is one of my most favorite drama movies. Its plot mainly focuses on the relationship of two normal guys, Doyle Gipson and Gavin Banek , who have totally different social backgrounds, and how they ended up to realize what is right and wrong. Doy Gipson, played by Samuel L. Jackson, was a car insurrance salesman, and Gavin Banek, played by Ben Affleck, was a lawyer, who worked for his father-in-law, a dishonest man who tried to steal the one-million foundation from other members in the board for himself. The car accident caused by Gavin in one morning day had almost changed the two men's life forever. As a result,Gipson was late for the divorcise court to inform his wife and kids that he has just bought the new house, and to express his endless desireness to be a great husband and father. On the other hand, Gavin, who accidentally dropped the important document while writting a check to Gipson, couldn't win his case, and his life was threatened, which he had to find the document or he would be going to jail. Frustration between two men grew intensely as they tried all attempts to revenge each others. Gavin cut off Gipson's credit lines and did some tricks that sunk Gipson deeply into family issues and financial troubles. While Gipson almost killed Gavin by taking apart Gavin car's wheel. However, at the end, they came to understand each others more, and their reconcillation helped them to realize that the hatred had drawn them into the world of sin, evilness and guilt of the modern society. This movie has acutally made me concentrate so hard and held my interest 'til the end. The other reason I gave this movie 5 stars is the uniqueness of this movie. The movie goes beyond the "drama" means, it sent the good messages. It taught me a valuble and moral lessons that revenging doesnt' help solving or winning anything, and you can never get enough revenge without paying for it each time.

4 out of 5 stars Better than I expected .......2007-06-08

Some reviewers have complained that they didn't know who they were supposed to cheer for in this movie. This is exactly why I like this movie. Somehow, I feel sympathy for both characters. The acute sense of urgency for both characters was well played out and created a great deal of suspense. Also, I loved the twist of Amanda Peet's character.

3 out of 5 stars BETTER THAN AVERAGE THRILLER!.......2007-04-12

This film is much better than the average thriller and it will hold your interest to the end. Good acting, good story and it's not overly long. The DVD transfer is very good.

    3 out of 5 stars Leone's roots.......2007-07-31

COLOSSUS OF RHODES provides a good look at Sergio Leone's roots--and the roots of the Italian Western--in the peplum (or "sword and sandal") genre that dominated popular Italian film in the late 50s and early 60s, just before the western boom. There is little in this film to suggest the master stylist that Leone would become just a few years later. But it's one of the better peplum films, with high production values that look especially good on this transfer. And there is one delightful shot that seems to prefigure, in a comic way, Leone's later attraction to extreme closeups of eyeballs.

4 out of 5 stars Visually Beautiful Italian "Sword And Sandal", Epic With An Oddly Cast Rory Calhoun.......2007-07-25

Director Sergio Leone is of course much better known for his famous westerns of the 1960's and '70's however what we have here is his first official directing effort in one of the bigger budgeted films in the early 1960's cycle of "Epic", productions. Usually set in ancient Greece or Rome, here the setting is the beautiful island of Rhodes with the plot revolving around the famous statue or "Colossus" that stood astride the harbour in ancient times and after its premature demise courtesy of an earthquake became one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. "The Colossus of Rhodes", has been the Italian epic I have long wanted to see and Warner Bros. have done a wonderful job on presenting it now in all its original glory on DVD for the first time. While certainly not on the level of "Ben-Hur", "Cleopatra", or "The Fall of the Roman Empire", in terms of overall scope and majesty, it does still have much to offer the viewer. The film is rich in beautiful cinematography highlighting attractive locations photographed in Spain, stunning sets and costumes, excellent swordplay and plenty of the necessary intrigue, and best of all the eye catching recreation of the legendary giant statue known through history as the "Colossus of Rhodes". Misplaced or I should say also miscast, leading man Rory Calhoun continued the early 1960's tradition of Italian and Spanish film makers importing second string American leading men to star in their epic productions in the hope of widening their film's distribution potential. However Calhoun, best remembered as a cowboy star in the 1950's looks badly out of place in the setting of ancient Rhodes and he defiantely doesn't look comfortable in the Toga-like costumes he wears in the story. I still feel original choice for the role, John Derek who excelled as Joshua in Cecil De Mille's classic "The Ten Commandments", would have been better suited for the part of Greek Military hero Darios who gets caught up in the intrigue of ancient Rhodes just prior to the devastating earthquake that toppled the world famous statue at the film's fiery climax.

4 out of 5 stars The War Between Heaven and Hell Rages On..........2006-03-25

During the mid-nineties, Dimension Films produced a small, yet entertaining franchise of films based on a supposed 23rd chapter in the book of Revelation, this series was known as `The Prophecy'. Focusing on a second war in Heaven, this one being waged by those angels that had once been loyal to God during Satan's revolt, but after seeing the evil humanity is capable of exacting on itself, and wondering why the Creator would bother to shower His love and grace on a creation that is completely ungrateful, some of the loyal angels have questioned their allegiances. With the battle lines clearly drawn the angels take sides against each other waging a war that closed off access to Heaven by all of humanity. In 2000, Dimension released "The Prophecy 3: The Ascent", which at the time of its release was to be the 3rd and final chapter in `The Prophecy' saga. With humanity being allowed access into Heaven after a final battle between the hero of the good angels and the leader of the evil angels, the good side won and the gates were once again opened. In 2005, Dimension chose to return to this franchise and see if they could expand upon the story that was started in the initial trilogy. This seemed a daunting task, especially since the original trilogy starring Christopher Walken was for starters, just so interesting and entertaining, and secondly the storyline was completed. However, the powers-that-be within Dimension Films felt strongly enough in their franchise and released "The Prophecy 4: Uprising".

Set some time after the opening of Heaven to humanity that occurred at the end of "The Prophecy 3: The Ascent", this latest installment in `The Prophecy' franchise, aptly titled "The Prophecy 4: Uprising", focuses not on humanity's plight of non-entrance into Heaven, but rather the angels that are no longer loyal to God are now trying to find a way to once again seal the `Pearly Gates'. To achieve their nefarious goal, the evil angels are in search of The Lexicon, an ancient religious manuscript that continues to write itself and reveals the mysteries to the future. With this book, the evil angels believe that by knowing what will happen next they will be able to thwart any resistance the good angels can muster. Caught in the middle of this search is a young woman (Kari Wuhrer) who happens to be in possession of The Lexicon, and has been commissioned by a good angel to protect the book at all costs from a body-jumping evil angel who is close on her heels. Now with evil angels nipping at her heels and Satan himself offering protection, this young woman is in a fight for her life, and humanity's fate hangs in the balance.

I have to admit when I heard about Dimension Films continuing this franchise I was very skeptical, especially since the new films would not have Christopher Walken's character Gabriel in them. To me any installment into this franchise without Christopher Walken would be an absolute waste of time. Well, I am pleased to announce that not only was this film not a waste of time, it continued the franchise in a very strong way. The cast is talented, though one does miss Christopher Walken, these actors do an excellent job of carrying on the torch in this series. The storyline is interesting by having the evil angels becoming more desperate and therefore more menacing because they have already lost the war over barring humanity from Heaven, also one of the characters assisting Kari's character is a very jaded cop who has made some terrible decisions in his life, and makes him difficult to root for which is different for this franchise, since all of the other lead characters have been basically good people that have lost their faith and must get it back in order to defeat the evil angels. This twist in the series' formula allows this newest film to stand up alongside the other entries, and easily hold it's own in the franchise.

If you are a fan of this franchise, but are somewhat skeptical regarding this latest entry without Christopher Walken, let me tell you, go rent this film, you won't be sorry.

"The Prophecy 4: Uprising" is rated R for violence and language.

    4 out of 5 stars DEVIL OF A TIME.......2006-03-13

This is the fourth entry in THE PROPHECY saga, and although we miss Christopher Walken, it's a fairly decent spiritual thriller on its own. Belial has had a falling out with Satan and he wants to start a new hell. He also wants the Lexicon, the mystical book that is writing itself into the future of mankind. The book ends up in the hands of a young girl who worked for a priest and the angel Simon (voiced by Jason London) is guiding her step by step. Meanwhile, a burned out, guilt-ridden detective, Dani, is investigating the brutal ritualistic murders of several people who are having their hearts ripped out. He is aided by a shadowy Interpol agent, John Riegert, who has his own mysterious agenda.
Sean Pertwee is superb as the cop, a chain smoking cynic who has a shady past; John Light is remarkably effective as the handsome, rather acerbic John Riegert; and Kari Wuhrer has a strong sense of vulnerability as Allison.
It's all fairly entertaining and has some good suspenseful moments. Pinhead himself (Doug Bradley from HELLRAISER) is also in the talented cast.

    4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good!.......2006-02-23

First of all, I didn't really have any high expectations when I started watching this movie. For one thing, it went straight to video, and that's the first sign that it's going to suck. We all know they try to make it sound so glamorous on the box, and when you take it home it's trash. I'm glad I was wrong about this one. Let me just say that the first 2 films were not only original, but great, however the 3rd installment of the franchise.."The Ascent" blew big time. With that being said, I wouldn't bother to compare it to the first 3 prophecies because this is an entirely different war this time around. This film is about The Lexicon, which is basicly a book that finishes the story of Revelation. This book is suppose to tell you about the real forthcoming of the anti-christ and the apocalypse. It's suppose to give you the real facts on how the world is suppose to end, but the book isn't finished because it's still awaiting dictation from God himself. I love movies with storylines or plots that have depth. I don't wanna waste an hour and a half of my life on something predictable. Anyway, Kari Wuhrer is a good actress, and she does a good job playing the "chosen one" handpicked by the angel Simon himself as the personal guardian of the Lexicon. Meanwhile, she's being pursued by the demon Belial who wants the book. Belial jumps from body to body in the quest for the book. Not only that, Satan himself is actually on Earth trying to track her down, but in this case, he wants to protect her and the book (for his own selfish reasons of course). Either way, I suggest that you watch the Prophecy:Forsaken immediately after this one in order to get the whole story. It's explained in that film why she was chosen, and why Satan aided in the protection of the guardian.

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing!!.......2005-11-06

Being a big fan of the Prophecy series, I was extremely disappointed with this movie and the one after (Prophecy:Forsaken). All the elements of the first two and even the third film were missing. Where was the creepiness or angelic awe in this film? Christopher Walken was great in the first three but I don't even think his presence in this film would have made much difference.

    4 out of 5 stars surprisingly good!.......2005-10-26

I had mixed feelings about these further Prophecy sequels when I first heard about them. I was a big fan of the first three movies and of Walken's Gabriel. The original trilogy seemed like it would be a hard act to follow, but I'm very happy to say that Prophecy 4 & 5 are surprisingly good sequels. Prophecy fans should give 'em a shot.

This film contains graphic violence and brief nudity.

Known as Gunnm in Japan and then Battle Angel Alita to Western manga readers, Battle Angel (in all of its incarnations) is now part of the canon of Blade Runner-inspired anime cyberpunk.

The film version follows a "Hunter Warrior" and cyborg healer named Ido. Ido formerly lived in the floating land of Zalem (Tiphares in the book), the paradise that hovers over the refuse heap of Scrap Iron City in which he now resides with his former lover, Chiren. In his travels as a bounty hunter (killing spine thieves in a world in which human nerve tissue has become the most precious commodity), Ido one day discovers and repairs the remnants of a cyborg whom he names Gally (Alita in the manga). Though possessing the body of a young woman, Gally embodies Ido's most sophisticated and lethal cybernetic skill. In the first episode on the DVD, "Rusty Angel," Gally challenges Chiren's own creation, Greweicia--a brain-eating gladiator--to a death match. In "Tears Sign" Gally discovers that her first love, Yugo, has put himself in the employ of the spine trader Vector so that he can earn his way, he thinks, to Zalem. Gally confronts her fellow bounty hunters to protect Yugo, only to watch him horribly wounded in a plot to capture her for Vector.

Yukito Kishiro's finely detailed line drawings in the original manga (like a cleaner version of Miyazaki's style in the Nausicaa books) are impossible to translate into film. What the film loses in detail, however, it makes up for in its intense action sequences and shadowy mixtures of color and a darkly cinematic soundtrack. Anime fans should be prepared for some pretty graphic violence--including some horrific scenes of decapitation. Also, the action keeps the plot moving at breakneck speed, so character development often seems to happen in leaps; you'll want to read the books to learn more about Gally/Alita and her world.

For English speakers, the DVD is best watched in the original Japanese with subtitles. The dubbing seems to raise the pitch of everyone's voice, changing the mood of the film from tragic-cool to slightly comical. Gally's English is especially annoying. With her original Japanese voice (sometimes childlike and sometimes a seductive whisper), she is a perfectly deadly heroine with a leather-clad style that anticipates The Matrix. --Patrick O'Kelley

3 out of 5 stars Wheres that grain o salt?.......2007-06-03

Fans of the manga will no doubt need it. It was hard to watch and enjoy this without noticing the obvious differences from the manga. Still when I approach something that is derived from a video game or comic. I completely forget everything I know about it and watch the movie as a movie. Therefore, I pretty much enjoyed Battle Angel. The story really didn't appeal to me but the action made up in some ways. I didn't care too much at all for Gally's high pitch voice. Anyway, if you never read the manga than you could enjoy this short anime. But those who cant erase the manga experiance from their minds will most likely hate this anime. Its 2 short, yet entertaining episodes. Due to some strong language and gore, I wont say its recommended for kids. I dont think its worth 20 bucks but if you cant find it cheaper than check it out. If your looking for some cyber punk anime I think you should give Armitage a try.

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointing .......2007-03-25

Bone Fox's review is pretty close to how I feel about this anime. I am also a die-hard Battle Angel Alita fan and this attempt to convert the novels to an anime is a joke.

Too much of the story is left out. For example, the first face off between Alita and Makaku where Alita suffered a defeat, which in turn leads Ido giving her the berserker's body (which plays a massive role in book 5). Makaku's past and how he came to be was left out and replaced with him receiving help from a made up character that was never in the novels. Another massive mistake was leaving out the "small fights" between Alita and Zapan which later leaves to what is know as "the point of no return" in the series. There are other big mistakes and holes in the story. To type them all would lead to about 3-4 pages long...

I agree with Bone, if you have never read the novels, you may like this anime. If you have read them, this anime will make you sick and wish that it never came to be. I truly hope James Cameron can do the movies that he is planning to do and do them right and stay true to the novels. I know Cameron is a big fan of the series, but I am worried he may already be making the mistake of wanting to cast Arnold Schwarzenegger as Ido. Arnold as Ido...it doesn't fit...

    2 out of 5 stars Depends.......2005-08-16

To begin, I am a die-hard fan of the Battle Angel Alita manga. When I first saw this 'episode' of the Battle Angel anime and the anime version of 'Tears of an Angel' I was very disapointed. I agree with the offcial reveiw that it is impossible to translate Yukito Kishiro's extensive manga into an animated format without losing the incredible artwork. However, the loss of the story is what disapointed me the most.
I feel that the depth of the original plot is simply cheapened in the anime. The main villian (Makaku in the manga) has been replaced by a simple "brain eating gladiator". The intense scenes where Alita attempts to save Koyomi from Makaku are completly left out. The anti-hero Desty Nova, who plays a significant role in the later books, is also missing.
If you have never read the manga, you may enjoy this.
If you have read and enjoy the manga, you may want to save your money.

5 out of 5 stars A horrific sci-fi story about violence and love!! .......2005-03-25

    Good:
    * Intense blood and gore.
    * Deep storyline (easy to understand).
    * Cool character desing (so look alike to the anime in Kill Bill).
    * Great action scenes with good animation (there were like 3 or 4 action scenes).

    Bad:
    * The graphics were kind of smudgy.
    * Sad story.

The story is simple because is about this robot girl called Gally who want to become an assasin for hire so she can get a better life but later the problems become more complicated.
This anime is not those who seeks for action-packed, this is more like a violent movie but is still a classic and very recomended for anime fans.

P.S: The english dub was GREAT but way to overacted at times, I think the voices were better than the acting but is worth to hear, so don't pay to much attention to the other people because is not THAT bad. In fact! this is one of the best dubs I ever heard since Princess Mononoke and Twilight of the Darkmaster.

    Adios!

5 out of 5 stars The universe manifests.......2004-04-06

    Unique, beautiful, and well story-lined.
This is number one in my anime collection. Just about every bad review gotten for this movie was because of people who read the manga and therefor had major bias since a movie will just about never be the way you pictured it would be from reading it.

    Joy, love and peace.

The hardworking Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball star in the urbane and witty Forever Darling, a 1956 romantic comedy, made at the height of the couple's popularity as co-stars of I Love Lucy, about the difficulty of forging marital harmony. Arnaz plays unpretentious, visionary chemist Lorenzo "Larry" Vega, whose passion for working on a powerful chemical insecticide for the benefit of humankind means little to his wife, Susan (Ball). A creature of high society, Susan is conflicted about her destiny. Should she be concerned with acquiring a bigger house and socializing with the right people, or should she follow Larry as he takes his insecticide on a two-year field study in tropical jungles? Attempting to guide her toward the right decision is a dapper, guardian angel, who happens to take the form of James Mason because Mason is Susan's fantasy man. The script by Helen Deutsch (I'll Cry Tomorrow) indulges I Love Lucy fans with plenty of slapstick set pieces plugged into an extended camping scene. But there's also some flashy banter--Arnaz is very convincing putting well-heeled snobs in their place--and a very clever sequence in which Susan imagines herself as the heroine in a movie she happens to be watching. (A movie starring, yes, James Mason.) There's a fun, special feature in which Arnaz and Ball take time out from production on their television show to plug Forever Darling and reveal the secret of a truly happy marriage--and then get into a beef. --Tom Keogh

    Description

A lot of things can test a marriage, but Lorenzo and Susan Vega have unwittingly put their five-year union to the ultimate test: they go camping. And Susan's guardian angel, seen only by Susan, joins them. TV's I Love Lucy was in its fifth season when this romp gave fans more reasons to love its stars. Desi Arnaz plays Lorenzo, who heads for wide-open spaces to test his chemical company's new product. Wife Susan (Lucille Ball) goes, too. And soon we're all headed for comedy chaos built on tent-raising, forest critters, inflatable rafts and other typical elements of roughing it. There's one atypical element: the angel (James Mason) who wants to rescue their troubled union. Marriages may be made in heaven. But the details are worked out here below

4 out of 5 stars Not bad for Lucille Ball............2007-05-07

Pretty good movie, and funny, but not as funny as some movies (like, the Long, Long Trailer). I thought Lucy acted confused, and not at all like the comedienne we all know and love. However, this is good clean fun, and seeing Desi as a scientist was great fun. Very funny at the end too!

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie.......2006-10-29

I'm not trying to be biased or anything, as I'm a truly die-hard Lucille and Desi fan, but I thought the show was really great. It was, at the same time, romantic and innocent. I loved it. I thought it also very interesting, as the movie actually reflected Lucille and Desi's relationship in real life. For those who gave the show only one or two stars, were you actually paying attention to what they were saying? Because you have to do that in order to enjoy the movie.

    4 out of 5 stars Wonderful,innocent movie.......2006-03-28

This movie always makes me smile.Such nostalgia with the technicolor, shiny cars, women in dresses and men in suits.Lucy is one of my favorite comedians and she does a great job.I've never been a fan of Desi(sorry)but James Mason is absolutely dreamy.Forever Darling is bottom line just a fun movie to watch.

    1 out of 5 stars ONLY FOR LUCY/DESI DIEHARDS!.......2006-02-23

This is a terrible movie. When it came out in 1956 it was a box office bomb even though both stars were at the height of their powers. Time had only added to it's mediocrity.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF A WONDERFUL PAIR OF MOVIES.......2005-06-27

I have seen both Forever, Darling and The Long, Long Trailer (in that order) and would be hard-pressed to say which one I liked most. I love the title song sung by the Ames Brothers, but to hear Desi sing it in Spanish was a delight. Other reviewers have mentioned James Mason (I loved him as Dr. Watson in Murder By Decree) but don't forget the actress who played Thurston Powell III's wife on Gilligan's Island, Natalie Schafer, playing Susan's high-society mother!! All the comedy scenes will leave you breathless (I loved it her slave-and-master routine when she and her husband's first jaunt in the rowboat ended (with her rowing) but don't lose sight of the reason for the trip. It was because their marriage was on the rocks that Susan went with her husband in hopes of fixing things between them, and it was in the end, when she told her husband it was time she started going in his direction rather than her own, that my tears came. It would have been glorious if more movies by this superb team had followed.
