These 13 episodes recount Goku's first adventures and introduce some of the main characters from the phenomenally popular comedy-adventure. A small boy from another planet, Goku commands superhuman strength, but he was raised by an old man who taught him to use his powers only to fight evildoers. Goku stumbles onto Bulma, who is trying to assemble the seven enchanted Dragon Balls so she can wish for a boyfriend. The naive boy and the hot-tempered girl join forces to collect the magic spheres. They enter into a quarrelsome alliance with Oolong, the shape-shifting pig; Yamcha, the dashing bandit (who wants the Dragon Balls to wish away his shyness around girls); and Yamcha's metamorphic familiar Pwar. The heroes don't realize they're competing for the Dragon Balls with the pint-sized Blue Meanie, Emperor Pilaf (who plans to use the Dragon Balls to rule the world), and his two ninja flunkies, Mia and Chao. The wild card in the conflict is Roshi, a lecherous old man who is a master of extraordinary martial arts techniques. This version of the comic action series has been heavily edited, which infuriates some fans, but it still offers plenty of elaborate fights and slapstick comedy. "Curse of the Blood Rubies" is a "feature" that consists of recut chunks of the first four episodes on the discs, combined with sections of the "Legend of Shenlon" adventure. The evil King Gurumes is oppressing his people and digging up his once-fertile realm to obtain the fabulous Rubies. He wants the Dragon Balls to wish himself free of the insatiable gluttony that has transformed him into a bloated monster, and will do anything to obtain them, which brings him into conflict with Goku, Bulma, and company. Although the film contains nothing but reused footage, the story doesn't fit into the overall Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z continuity. Rated 5 and older, but more appropriate for ages 8 and up: minor nudity, toilet humor, and cartoon violence. --Charles Solomon

2 out of 5 stars Not the best.......2007-06-27

Thia saga contains the original 13 episodes of the great Dragon Ball Tv show. But sadly its only available in the edited and dubbed version because FUNimation (the company that released all the other un-cut sagas) still cannot get the rights to these episodes from the company that originally released them

2 out of 5 stars Dragon Ball at its Worst.......2007-06-22

This set contains the first 13 episodes of the phenomenon that is Dragon Ball. The Dragon Ball franchise has been my favorite anime since I can remember. This story is about a young boy named Goku. He meets a girl named Bulma and their epic journey to find seven magical orbs known as Dragon Balls begins. Once found, the seven orbs can grant any person a wish.

Specifically, this set contains the first 13 episodes of the show, however, the dubbed voices used are ridiculously bad and out of date. Also, the episodes are edited to the point where it will make you want to scream. The original Japanese version isn't even available. This set also comes with the Dragon Ball movie, Curse of the Blood Rubies, but that is also horribly dubbed. This is a very poorly done set that doesn't do this series justice. It's sad that the first episodes of this legendary show were so very poorly dubbed. Get these only if you are a true fan. Otherwise, try to see these episodes somewhere, but start with the Tournament Saga if you are considering buying any Dragon Ball DVDs, it is done much better.

1 out of 5 stars Get the Region Four version.......2007-05-21

This version of the first 13 episodes of Dragon Ball is the edited, 1995 Seagull dub. It is dub only, and does not have a Japanese language track.

But there's an alternative.

In Australia there is a Region Four DVD that has these episodes uncut. It too has the Blood Rubies movie (though that's dub only, even on the Region Four DVD.)

If you don't have a multi-region player, I'd recommend getting one just to be able to watch these episodes in their uncut glory - multi-region players can be had on Amazon from their independent sellers for pretty good prices - I got one for about $50.

Final verdict? Get the Region Four DVD, and if you don't have a multi-region player to play it on, get one.

It's beginning to seem less and less likely these episodes are going to get a legit, uncut release in America, so take my advice on this one.

3 out of 5 stars censored and only english and spanish.......2007-04-05

I love dragon ball, and was excited when I saw the original episodes being sold. I was disappointed that the DVD didn't have the original Japanese language, and that some things had been censored (for example, when Goku swims to catch the fish in the begining he is wearing swim trunks, however in the original he is au natural. other example, to get the dragon ball from the turtle elder, bloomer shows him her panties in the original, but this version completely deletes the whole scene.)
