4 out of 5 stars This movie was actually pretty good.......2007-08-09

Throughout Elementary school, I've seen various BSC books strewn about in my school Library and classroom bookshelf. As a boy, I've always viewed the books as nothing but just little girls' novels, and so I tended to avoid the books as much as possible lol. I was about 7 years old when this movie came out, and at that time, the commercials were all over the air waves non-stop. Eventually, after seeing the commercials a billion times a week, I for some reason developed a small interest in wanting to watch the film. Some of my friends who saw the movie said they loved it, so I decided to wait until they started showing it on TV, which it has been on many times but I just never got a chance to catch it. So I gave up trying to watch it for about 12 years, and I totally forgot all about the movie. Now I finally got the chance to watch the film on HBO Family yesterday, and I actually liked it! Although I was never a BSC reader, I thought the movie was good. Though I think the movie would've appealed to me more if I was a kid, so I'll always remember the Baby Sitter's Club as "the movie I should have watched when I was a kid."

3 out of 5 stars Childhood Memories.......2007-07-24

I never saw the film in theaters but I got it as soon as it came out on VHS. My little sister has it now because I guess I outgrew it. Anyway I saw it when it was playing on Dish Network. I watched it everyday when I was 9 but now that Im older it is kind of cheesy but I still enjoy it because it takes me back to those childhood memories. It has some adorable characters but I wish they would have focused more on Jessie and Mallory. I liked the books better but if you enjoyed it as a kid you would enjoy it now. Otherwise I would suggest buying it for your daughter because it is a great kid's film.

3 out of 5 stars Hey, it's just as great now as it was then..........2007-05-14

I bought this movie for a blast from my past...and I wasn't let down! Although the acting, at times, is horrible, the girls are all adorable, and it took me right back to sixth grade again. I don't really like the girl that plays Kristy, but I do love the Stacey character, along with Larissa Olyneck's (sp?) character.

Unless you loved this movie as a child, or your daughter is a fan of the book series, I wouldn't recommend this movie. But if you do have a daughter, and you're looking for a good movie that is still appropriate for her, I would definitely recommend it! The plot deals with lots of issues of teen girls, and no matter who you are, you can relate to one of the girls.

I still enjoy watching the movie after all these years, and hopefully one day I can pass on the books and this movie to my daughter!

4 out of 5 stars Far from the book series, but still a treat........2007-01-21

The Storyline

The Baby-Sitters Club is a delightful film based on the best-selling book series by Ann M. Martin. The movie features the 7 members of the Baby-Sitters Club: Kristy, Claudia, Mary-Anne, Stacey, Dawn, Mallory, and Jessi. They decide to start a summer camp for the kids in their town with hopes that it will be a success. However, things get in the way when Kristy's (played by Schulyer Fisk, who is Sissy Spacek's daughter) father comes back into her life. Everyone around her, including her fellow members, become suspicious.

The Highs

Schuyler Fisk is wonderful as the BSC tomboyish leader Kristy and the rest of the cast is splendid too! Rachel Leigh Cook (She's All That) is a perfect Mary-Anne as well as Larisa Oleynik's (The Secret World of Alex Mack) performance as the environment and vegetarian obsessed Dawn.

The Lows

Fans may not enjoy the storyline, since most of the book series revolves around the school life of the girls other than summer. I personally would rather see them in a school setting, trying to survive the world of babysitting and 8th grade.

Did You Know?

Actress Marla Sokoloff (Full House fans remember her as Stephanie's friend Gia) plays the bad girl Cokie.
Director Melanie Mayron makes a cameo appearance.

5 out of 5 stars ahhhhhhhh..... the 90's.......2006-11-04

okay so I grew up in the late 80's and early 90's, alright I'm still growing up, but seriously I have almost the whole collection of this Baby Sitter Club books and used to have the game somewhere. I can't tell you how excited I was when the movie came out. It was the perfect time and the perfect people to play the characters. If you loved the books or didn't even read them you'll still enjoy the movie, because it shows how to have friendships that last a lifetime!

Five of Mario Bava's best films are included in this box set, minus his forays into eroticism, like Blood and Black Lace. Still, the lines between sexual pathos and violence blur in these selections that influenced not only other famed directors of Giallo, such as Dario Argento and Lucio Fulci, but also spawned the American golden age in horror, led by directors such as John Carpenter. Three black and white films here exemplify Bava's trademark use of chiaroscuro mixed with suspense-building cinematography first developed in early horror classics like Nosferatu and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. In the Hitchcock-inspired Evil Eye (1963), tourist Nora Davis (Leticia Roman) witnesses a murder but can't convince police of the crime. Kill Baby Kill! (1966) is the prototype for all little girl-ghost films. Dr. Paul Eswai (Giacomo Rossi-Stuart) is recruited to solve the mystery of Villa Graps, where Baroness Graps (Giana Vivaldi) reanimates her dead daughter, Melissa, by killing innocent villagers. In Black Sunday (1960), the witch Princess Asa Vajda comes back from the dead to inhabit her look-alike, Katia, both played by Barbara Steele, the original femme fatale to which all brunette vamps, like Soledad Miranda (Vampyros Lesbos) and Elvira, are indebted.

In Technicolor, Bava's fantastically rainbow-lit films underpin the director's fascination with connections between our world and those imagined. Black Sabbath (1963) is a trilogy hosted by Boris Karloff, who also stars as a Russian vampire in its segment, "The Wurdalak." "The Telephone," and "The Drop of Water," in which a nurse, Helen Correy (Jacqueline Pierreux), steals a ring then fears that her dead medium patient seeks revenge, are acute studies of guilt and paranoia. The Viking saga, Knives of the Avenger (1966), like Bava's Hercules in the Haunted World, spawned several sword and sorcery films, while protagonist Rurik's (Cameron Mitchell's) knife-throwing is indeed entertaining. Screened back to back, these films provide evidence of Bava's influence in the horror genre. Moreover, they reveal Bava's deep understanding of horror's many facets, whether sexually, psychologically, or physically based. —Trinie Dalton

Description

More than a quarter of a century after his death, director Mario Bava remains one of international cinema's most controversial icons. Today his influence — marked by stunning visuals, daring sexuality and shocking violence — can still be seen in the works of Martin Scorsese, David Lynch, Tim Burton, Dario Argento and countless others in a legacy that extends far beyond the horror genre. This collection brings together 5 landmark movies from the first half of Bava's career — encompassing the original giallo, a bold Viking epic, and his three gothic horror masterpieces — featuring new transfers, original European versions, and exclusive featurettes to create the definitive celebration of one of the most important filmmakers of all time.

4 out of 5 stars Almost perfect but for one fatal flaw.......2007-08-11

I would have bought this set, being a fan of Bava and particularly of these films, but without Karloff's voice in Black Sabbath I personally consider it not worth having. I already have the version with the Italian actor's voice and it DOESN'T WORK. Sorry, Bava and Euro/Iti film fans, but the edited American Version is superior to the original for this reason alone (the other drawbacks are relatively negligable). Why else use Karloff if you don't get the full actor? The Italians never shot synch sound, anyway, so even the original Italian version is dubbed! Dubbing is NOT the issue - in fact, it's a non issue. In fact, due to the Italians use of non-synch, I think most Iti films shot this way often work better dubbed into the native language of the viewer, except where a fairly recognizable actor/voice is concerned, so learn that damn lesson and do things my way now!

5 out of 5 stars Finally..........2007-06-23

Kill Baby Kill is a flic choc full of foreboding atmosphere that can only be appreciated in the original wide-screen aspect. Contrary to Amazon's misleading information, this version IS widescreen with the option to view in Italian w/subtitles. The dubbed version is there for those who dislike subtitles. I paid 19.99 for an earlier crappy edition so needless to say I find this collection offered at 19.99 to be a gift from Amazon. Clear colors and sound make this DVD a joy to watch; great nostalgic fun. I can't wait to view the other titles, also in original theatric aspect, a bonus for me. Am I in Horror Heaven? (I bought an extra set as a present for a relative; no borrowing, please.)

5 out of 5 stars great collection.......2007-04-10

Sorry, but giving this set a bad rating just because the AIP-versions aren't included is stupid in my opinion.
This box includes 5 fantastic movies by Bava (yes, even "Knives Of The Avenger" is a great one) in overall amazing quality with very good bonus features. I believe there is a good reason that AB didn't include the different cuts of "The Girl Who Knew Too Much" and "3 Faces Of Fear": legal issues. If these are solved, hopefully we see these versions someday on DVD (though the only one that really interests me is "The Evil Eye". "Black Sabbath" would just be nice because of Karloff's own dubbing,
but everything else is clearly inferior to the italian version.)
Until then - enjoy what's IN this box, it is an amazing value for the cheap price. Of course many people who want to buy this, already may have different DVDs of some of the movies in there - so everyone must decide for themselves if it is worth getting.

3 out of 5 stars Bittersweet Box Set.......2007-04-09

It's great to have all of these Mario Bava titles in one set. The transfers are really beautiful, and a revelation to those of us with memories of grainy 16mm TV prints. "Black Sunday's" monochrome atmosphere looks particularly lush in this set. "Kill Baby Kill" is a major upgrade to the crummy, desaturated DVD I have from Image.
But they really SHOULD have included BOTH US and Italian versions of the star attraction, "Black Sabbbath". Or at least cut in Karloff's actual voice to the Italian version! Why not re-edit the way it should be? I still rushed out to buy this set, but cannot give it five stars due to the pre-release publicity which stated BOTH Black Sabbath versions would be in the box set. Anchor Bay owes all of us an apology or a free DVD of the English version.

5 out of 5 stars Trips to My Loo, My Darling.......2007-08-06

Could it be? Has our little son decided, all by himself, to use the potty? All signs say yes!

During our trip to the library last week, on a whim I rented "I Can Go Potty." My son studied it with intensity. He loved the song about being a "big kid," and would softly repeat the lyrics under his breath: "a big kid eats by himself, a big kid is polite, a big kid uses a potty" as though in a trance. He watched it over and over, and then stood up, took off his clothes and sat down on his potty. Folding laundry, I smiled and thought nothing of it. Months of looking into the depths of a bone-dry potty had left me cynical and jaded. I walked out of the room to put away the clean clothes, only to hear, "Done! Doooooooooone!"

When I returned, sure enough, there it was. I let out a cheer, we hugged, we clapped and when I called him my "big kid" and his eyes lit up with pride.

1 out of 5 stars Don't bother with this one........2007-07-16

I purchased this DVD after I started potty training and that was a big mistake. It may be ok for the very first introduction, but after that it is no good. For one thing, the child in the video is given the potty chair to play with and has it on his head and is using it like a toy which may be well and good when the child has not attempted to use it yet. I stopped showing the video immediately because I don't want my children to immitate the video. I don't allow my boys (twins) to play with the potty chair or toilet, they are for doing your business and that is it. I liked all of the other videos we used (Elmo's Potty Time, Potty Power, I Gotta Go) which were silly and had catchy songs the kids liked.

5 out of 5 stars This video is great!.......2007-07-05

We have potty trained two little guys very easily with the help of this video. My nephew watched it once and was well on his way. Within 2 weeks of his one viewing, he was potty trained with no accidents and very few demands from his parents. My two and 1/2 year old has had similar results. He was glued to this CD for a few days. Would watch it over and over. 2 weeks later his is well on his way to no accidents at all. And more importantly, no pressuring required from Mom and Dad.

1 out of 5 stars Please do not buy this DVD.......2007-05-06

I bought "Potty Power" and it keeps a 22 month old interested but I wasn't totally happy with everything about that DVD. As such, I bought "I Can Go Potty!...". It does not keep this child interested at all. A child does the talking/explaining which is great. It shows a boy playing with the potty chair with a plush toy and just playing with it in a non-potty way. This may be what happens in real life but no child needs to be shown to do that.
Much of the story is of the boy sitting on the chair while day dreaming about going to outter space, under the sea and in the jungle. Do children who are potty training age know about these places even? The alligator is scary, that is so helpful. I sent this back, and I hate to do things like that.

5 out of 5 stars Worked like a charm! And Fast!.......2007-02-02

I am so excited I can barely type this review! My 3 year old son was anti-potty training and said "NO" every time I brought it up. I read somewhere not to push the issue, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to buy a DVD about it and maybe he would become more interested. I ordered this DVD and just played it this evening. He just stared at the TV for 5 minutes straight without turning away then he literally brought the potty into the living room, sat down and went for the first time! Then he kept asking to play the song part of it again & again while he was playing with his cars. About an hour later he jumps up, runs over to the potty, sat down and went again! I didn't even have to bring it up! I am just stunned at the moment and had to recommend this video immediately. Just amazing and worth every penny!

HIS GIRL FRIDAY-PENNY SERENADE (DVD MOVIE)

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars MY TWO CENTS WORTH SAYS WOW!!.......2007-02-28

For the first cent, MARENGO FILMS' remastered version (forget the earlier reviews) of PENNY SERENADE is now the best copy of this title to be found on the DVD market. And trust me, I've been through them all. The muddy picture and hissing sound of all other competing versions have been eliminated by the careful remastering of MARENGO. Finally, you can now see this wonderful movie with a beautiful picture and clear, crisp sound.

As for the second cent, the remastering of HIS GIRL FRIDAY is also meticulously accomplished. The picture is clean and sharp and the sound is loud and clear. And how can you argue with the price? You get two bonafide classics in wonderful transfers for the same price that you generally pay for just one DVD title.

Bravo to MARENGO for two jobs well done!!

5 out of 5 stars Irene Dunne Is Great!.......2006-03-15

Irene Dunne is so underrated, she is a great comic and dramatic actress. I have watched every movie I can get my hands on.
Just the last few years it seems more and more people are discovering Irene Dunne. Love Affair (original Dunne) great! Penny serenade, fantastic!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Copy Around.......2006-02-11

I puchased the Marengo release of Penny Serenade, and boy was I thrilled. This has to be the cleanest copy of this movie I have ever seen. Granted it is not perfect but it is far superior to any other releases I have viewed. For me "His Girl Friday" was just a welcome extra......Thanks, Anita

3 out of 5 stars Good Movies But Especially My Girl Friday........2005-10-07

I really like Cary Grant and this DVD has two of his movies, His Girl Friday and Penny Serenade. They are both good movies but personally I think His Girl Friday is the better of the two and in this one Cary Grant stars as a newspaper editor who does eveything he can to keep his star reporter (Rosalind Russell) who also happens to be his ex-wife from retirement and getting married to an insurance agent played by Ralph Bellamy. The whole cast is wonderful but especially Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell. Penny Seranade is good and about a couple with marital problems who want to adopt a child and his costar is Irene Dunne who starred in two screwball comedies with him, My Favorite Wife and The Awful Truth but truth to be told I preferred their screwball comedies to their dramatic movie. Penny Serenade is good but it's a little too melodramatic for my taste!

Tess of the Storm Country might be seen as the archetypal Mary Pickford film. Pickford plays Tessibel Skinner, a dirt-poor fisherman's daughter living with a community of squatters in ramshackle huts by the water's edge. Tess was reportedly one of Pickford's favorite roles (both in this 1922 version and in an earlier one, shot in 1914), and it shows. She brings a sparkling energy to her performance. Dressed in rags, her hair a frazzled mop, she creates an indelible character. ("The more ragged and dirty I look, the better I can play," declared Pickford in a 1914 Photoplay Magazine interview.)

Every man in squatter town has eyes for the beautiful, fearless Tess, from brutish Ben Letts (Jean Hersholt) to pathetic Ezra Longman (Danny Hoy). But Tess's heart belongs to her sweet daddy (Forrest Robinson). High on a hill above these indigent folk dwells the wealthy Graves family. Father Elias (David Torrence) considers the squatters a stench in his nostrils and tries to evict them; son Frederick (Lloyd Hughes) sympathizes with them and falls in love with Tess; daughter Teola (Gloria Hope) finds her life becoming inextricably bound with Tess's, in ways neither girl could have imagined.

Like so many films in which Mary Pickford appears, Tess of the Storm Country pits rich against poor. In the microcosm of this movie, the rich are steeped in moral turpitude; it takes poor, pure-hearted Tess to, in the words of a chastened Elias Graves, teach them the true "meaning of Christianity." This densely plotted picture also takes on such weighty themes as murder, perjury, out-of-wedlock pregnancy, suicide, and attempted rape. A rousing melodrama, the film draws the viewer right in and doesn't let go until its riveting climax. --Laura Mirsky

Description

America's sweetheart, Mary Pickford, in a powerful story of survival. In this all-fired melodrama, wealthy Elias Graves builds a house on a hill and tries unsuccessfully to evict the squatters who live in the valley below. Tess (Pickford) leads the squatters' struggle for survival and wins the sympathy and love of Graves's son, Frederick. This 1922 remake of Pickford's 1914 version of the same story demonstrates the remarkable growth of Pickford as an actress, producer and filmmaker--and of cinema itself.

5 out of 5 stars A compelling story.......2006-02-02

This is a really compelling drama, and a film that easily would have been in the running for at least one Academy had the awards existed in 1922. The basic outline of the story is that Elias Graves, an unfeeling capitalist, is trying to drive away the poor squatters living at the bottom of his hill. He lives in a lovely mansion with his two children (his wife is deceased) while they live in poverty and in shacks. This part of the plot is a compelling portrayal of the eternal class struggle and the exploitation of the poor and working-classes by the rich. Mary Pickford's character, Tess, has caught the eye of a number of the young men living in her neighborhood at the bottom of the hill, although she doesn't care for any of them. By far the most aggressive suitor is Ben Letts, who isn't a very nice guy, to say the very least. Ben eventually frames Tess's father for the murder of Teola Graves's fiancé Daniel. This not only devastates Tess, who maintains her father's innocence all during his incarceration and trial, but also Teola. Not only has Teola lost the man she loves, but she had also recently told Daniel that he had gotten her into trouble and they would have to be married sooner than planned. (Many modern audiences today, particularly the younger generation, wouldn't realise that that meant Teola was pregnant.) Mr. Graves himself has been out of town while these things have been going on, so this buys Teola some time. Meanwhile Tess and Frederick, Teola's brother, have developed feelings for one another, but a romance seems out of the question since they come from different classes. Trouble develops when Fred comes home from college and sees his sister and Tess together, with the baby who has since been born. He believes it is Tess's illegitimate child, and feels lied to and betrayed. He now believes she is an immoral woman. Things get even more complicated when Mr. Graves comes back to town. All in all, this is the stuff of compelling drama. (It would have been a nice treat if the original 1914 version of this story Mary did had been included as an extra, particularly since her leading man in that version was Harold Lockwood, and that is one of the few surviving films of this extremely popular but today all but forgotten actor.)

To many people in the modern audience, however, pivotal parts of the story may now seem dated. People today are so used to people having children without being married that it seems like a completely different world where it was actually a disgrace and a scandal to get caught in the family way, and then worse yet to have the child's father die before a wedding could occur. This movie never even uses the word "pregnant," and it does sort of suspend the modern person's sense of disbelief that Teola is never shown to actually be pregnant. She looks exactly the same at the beginning of the story as she does when Tess finds her about to about to take her own life and saves her, taking her back to her house so she can give birth. It's hard to believe that people once thought it was disgusting and improper to show a pregnant woman on the screen. I also found the story to be a little preachy in spots, with some rather heavy-handed Christocentric messages.

There's also the issue of the quality of the print. Obviously some of the frames are not in a very good state, but it seems clear that that is the result of disintegration of the film stock, not a blurry print that wasn't given a better digital remastering. People who complain too much about the quality of the print often miss the bigger picture, and it's not as though we should expect every single silent film to be as crystal-clear and beautifully preserved as 'Cobra' or 'The Garden of Eden.' Isn't it better this film still exists and is in pretty good overall condition than to have it lost or so far along in its disintegration that nothing can be done to save it?

4 out of 5 stars If You Don't Like This You Don't Like Pickford.......2005-09-16

This movie might subtly endorse bad hygiene, but I have to get over that. This is a must if you have seen other Pickford movies and liked them. If you haven't, it is still recommended as a beginning point.

Tess is the quintessential Pickford spitfire - a beautiful but dirty, intelligent but uneducated hellion. None of her emotions seem genuine; even in the serious parts of the movie she is emotionally detached from the story. That isn't a bad thing; how can one take such an implausible story seriously? Mary Pickford wasted her talent and most of her career on dated melodramas that are barely watchable today, but movies like these are gems.

Just consider one scene where she is seen peering through the bars of the rich antagonist's front gate, making monkey faces at him. And when she is asked how she got a hold of the bible that she moralizes from, she replies "I cribbed it from the church." [SPOILER] There is a fight scene where she is the damsel, but not a distressed one - she eggs the fight on, and when the hero begins to lose to the villain she gets impatient and smashes a chair over the villain's head. End of that.

The movie is far from perfect -- the characters are archetypal and the plot is too dramatic to happen in real life -- but the real reason to watch this is to see Pickford herself. Her personality, energetic disposition, and remarkably photogenic face carry this and nearly every other movie she's in. The plot and other characters are just a means to provide her with a showcase. If you don't like this movie -- and it's fair if you don't -- you won't like any Mary Pickford movies and I can't recommend them to you, either.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2003-07-07

I was apprehensive when I first started watching this movie. I am usually not a big fan of 'heartwarming stories' with poor girls who prove their worth, but I wanted to see the movie Mary thought important enough to re-make.

This is an amazing film!

Although some of it has been damaged over time, like a blurry scene in the beginning that seems clouded over with water damage where Tess dances around, it is easy to understand and engaging. Mary Pickford handles the inspirational cliché plot with seriousness that allows many audiences to relate.

I definitely recommend this movie. Even if you aren't a fan of silent movies, Mary will grab your attention and you'll find it hard to look away.

4 out of 5 stars Marvelous Mary Pickford, A MUST.......2001-10-16

There is little doubt as to Mary Pickford's brilliance. As a silent screen star she was not the most beautiful nor the MOST dramatic, but she was by far one of the most marvelous stars on the silent screen. With expressions and mannerisms so refined and masterful and ability that far exceeded many of those around her she made any role a GREAT one.

"Tess of the Storm Country" is a masterful film. It really does show Mary Pickford at "top form" her acting is superb and her performance clearly does her justice. The film quality is not as good as some of her other roles that have been transposed to DVD but if you love Mary you MUST watch this movie.

Mary Pickford plays "Tess" a fisherman's daughter who lives in a shanty town just below the "hill toppers" a rich family whose patriarch despises his low brow "neighbors". With manipulation and cruelty he will do anything, even use his daughters would be fiancee to get rid of the shanty people to give him an "unrestricted" view of the water. Mary Pickford plays Tess with vitality, warmpth, and a certain rough neck edge that will have you laughing and crying at the same time. Tess eventually catches the eye and the heart of a rich young man, who... oh no happens to be the "hill toppers" college bound son. With classic twists and many developments "Tess of the Storm Country" will captivate you. Be aware that this movie has a heavy Christian theme and is quite "heavy handed" when doling out its doses of morality. There is little doubt as to the good vs. evil in this film and the ideal of sinners and repenters. However, "Tess of the Storm Country" is a certain MUST for all Pickford fans.

5 out of 5 stars A film for Pickford fans.......2001-01-09

Tess of the Storm Country is one of Mary Pickford's best films. This was the first of her films which I saw and rather got me hooked, for I have gone on to buy four other Pickford DVDs. It may be that her style is somewhat out of favour now, but she is often funny and in this film shows great personality. It is true that the print quality of this edition is not always perfect. There are signs of decay of the film stock, but one has to accept this when one watches silent films. I would rather watch a slightly damaged 'complete' print than one that has been edited. The DVD box is not misleading if the print it describes is the best available, the best available undoubtedly is this print. Anyway why not focuss on what we have, which is a highly enjoyable film with a delightful story and star performance? There is no point grieving over what we have lost forever, i.e. a perfect print. Perfect prints of silent movies will rarely be available to us now, but that is no reason to ignore a style of filmaking which at its best is unforgettable.

Lina Romay stars as a nymphomaniac starlet who enlists the help of her chauffeur (Erik Falk) in picking up men and women for intimate encounters. And when there is no one to pick up??? Well, then she has her way with her chauffeur or herself for that matter...

4 out of 5 stars Worthy of your collection-Adults only.......2007-06-30

Lina Romay is an actress who for the love of her art, isnt afraid to do what's right for the part. Normally, in a movie like this, she'd use another name like Candy Coster.
Basic premise is this. I'm rich. I'm bored. I'm sexually starved. What do women in this role do? Well, when self love doesn't do the trick, they go looking for adventure. Having racey photos of yourself is fine after a little barber work, but let's go get some men.
There is a LOT of self love, plenty of male & female full nudity, simulated sex (like what you'd see on late night cable, only not as pretty production wise), some oral sex-male & female, lesbianism, straight sex (again simualted even tho she does hardcore in other flicks), cruising for hook-ups & cheap sets (apart from the car & the house which you really only see from the outside). If you're a Lina fan, then of course you need to get this. If you've seen mentions of her before & are curious, again get this. It's available in 3 languages (all on the same disc) with some trailers as a bonus. I'd been looking for this for awhile & finally able to get it. Glad I did.

From the title, you might expect a modern slasher picture or a serial killer drama, but Mario Bava's Kill, Baby... Kill is actually an eerie gothic ghost-story-with-a-body-count set in a quaint Italian turn-of-the-century village. When a city coroner arrives to examine the latest victim in a long string of "suicides," he discovers a town of deserted streets, suspicious and terrified townspeople, and a conspiracy of silence. The town is haunted by the specter of a homicidal adolescent girl, a creepy vision in white whose little-girl giggles become chilling as she randomly chooses her victims and sends them to their gory deaths. Bava sets a moody stage of empty streets blanketed nightly in a swirling mist and flooded with lights of red, blue, and green--an expressionist night-cum-nightmare as unreal as it beautiful. This fanciful nocturnal world becomes the stage for virtual pageants of death in which the victims become tortured puppets of the malevolent spirit and are forced to murder themselves. The often arch and operatic performances are deadened by flat dubbing and an often prosaic translation, which creates an odd dissonance between the story and style. Though hardly to the tastes of modern slasher movie mavens, Bava's imaginative horror-thriller is full of grotesque and sometimes grueling murders, but trades the gore for an unsettling mood of doom. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars The new edition that everyone's waiting for!.......2007-05-29

After announcing a March release, and selling some pre-orders (which is where most of these price gougers got their copies), Dark Sky delayed the initial release to a yet to be determined date.

Now, all of us Bava fans have to wait for this version to be released at a reasonable price (original listing price: $24.95) and now end up having to pay over a hundred dollars for an edition no one's rated or seen. I don't know anything about this Dark Sky Films and I will be suspicious until I see the transfer for myself.

I'll hang on to my older VCI version and suffer with a bad transfer until hopefully this version is released by this company or another.

But I do know something: I will not give in to these price gougers for an edition I don't know anything about.

      5 out of 5 stars Kill, kill!.......2007-01-04

Okay, it's a stupid title for a movie, and it sounds like it belongs to a cheap slasher flick.

But fortunately Mario Bava's "Kill Baby Kill" is much better than its hokey title suggests, as one would expect from a giallo master. Instead of a slasher movie, it's a gothic horror movie with impalements, ghosts and magic. It has all the beauty -- and terror -- of a decayed fairy tale.

When a young woman leaps onto an iron fence, young Dr. Eswai (Giacomo Rossi-Stuart) is called in to do an autopsy, with the help of beautiful Monica (Erica Blanc). He finds a coin in the girl's heart, and none of the townspeople will tell him -- because if they do, they will suffer a similar fate. Eswai doesn't buy all this superstition.

He's even more annoyed when local sorceress Ruth (Fabienne Dali) begins using her powers to protect a young girl from a childlike specter -- little dead aristocrat Melissa Graps. But as the bodies pile up, and Monica is plagued by bizarre nightmares, Eswai must accept Ruth's help to save Monica from the ghost, and an evil baroness.

"Kill Baby Kill" is more gothic horror rather than straightforward "giallo." But it has the cinematic touches that Bava was known for. Bava fills the run-down village sets with broken doors, wrought-iron fences, coffins, and long fluttering canopies. It's gothically delicious.

Bava also adds dreamlike touches to his typical style-- the village is full of mist, tombstones, and green, blue and red lighting that flicks on and off. He packs this movie so full of visual opulance, it's like being locked inside a beautiful nightmare -- and it adds to the feeling of a fairy tale gone horribly wrong.

And he has a knack for the really spooky stuff too. A bouncing ball, childish giggling, and a little girl on a swing become really horrifying, not to mention all those impalements on everything from fences to, uh, candlesticks. Two particularly eerie scenes have Eswai chasing himself through endless rooms, and Monica running down an endless spiral stair.

The ghost story itself is quite simple, and the secret identities of two characters are quite obvious. But fortunately, this doesn't detract from the atmosphere. How could it? "Kill Baby Kill" is steeped in atmosphere from the first creepy scene, and rather than building in suspense, it runs steadily all the way to the end.

And the cast helps. Despite the emotionless dubbing, Rossi-Stuart and Blanc both do outstanding jobs, but the best performance of the movie belongs to Fabienne Dali, as a tragic sorceress who is trying to save the village from Melissa's revenge. The scene where she mourns her dead lover is exquisite.

"Kill Baby Kill" is a gorgeous, creepy ghost story, with good acting and stellar direction. Definitely a must-see for fans of atmospheric cult horror.

3 out of 5 stars Bright and sinister.......2006-08-14

The worst thing about this film is the title..."Kill Baby Kill" is far more suitable for a schlocky blood 'n' breasts romp than this stately gothic. Everything else about the film is pretty good. The story tells of a doctor who arrives in a remote village to investigate some mysterious murders. The coach driver who delivers him will come no nearer than the village outer walls, and the villagers inside either give him the silent stare treatment or tell him to leave if he knows what's good for him. The only person to befriend him is an attractive young female scientist, who assists him in his investigation despite fearing for her own safety...because the village is being haunted by the apparition of a young blonde girl, who's appearance is said to mark the person who sees her for a violent death.

Now, after being faced with that many horror movie cliches in the opening 20 minutes, you might be forgiven for losing interest with this pretty quickly. And it's true to say that few movies starting with this premise ever approach the realms of the "classics". But stick with this one and you might see some scenes that surprise you.

Firstly, the thing that every reviewer seems to mention is the colour. Scenes are bathed in all sorts of unnatural shades of blues, reds and yellows, and the effect makes the film take on a very luxurious appearance. The photography is mostly very beautiful. Shots of the ghostly girl peering through windows, along with the general eye for compostion in most shots is very accomplished. The location the film is set in is also pretty striking, seemingly filmed in an almost totally derelict village. I don't know how the viewer is supposed to believe that people actually carry on their lives dwelling in what appear to be roofless ruins!

The atmosphere is postitively dripping with gothic trappings. Every scene takes place in either a ruin of some sort, a heavily decorated room or a cobwebbed passage or tomb. The characters all wear richly detailed period clothes. The best scenes of the movie take place in a grand, isolated villa - the source of the villager's terror and the home of the murderous phantom child who seems to be terrorizing the place. The only living inhabitant is the child's mother, a reclusive and half-mad Baroness, played up to the hilt by the actress in a full-on "Miss Haversham" style. She hates the villagers and holds them responsible for the death of her young daughter many years ago. Will she help or hinder our heroes as they try to end the ghostly reign of terror?

There's no denying the fact that although it's strikingly filmed, the movie still looks a bit cheap and formulaic. But Bava was always adept at making a lot out of a little, and he succeeds here. There's a great dream sequence that the heroine experiences at one point, plus another scene in which the hero runs through a maze of identical rooms in the Baroness's villa, running so fast he actually catches up with HIMSELF at one point - a very bizarre sequence! The ending is also quietly satisfying, if maybe a little muted.

You won't find any gore or nudity in this horror tale, but you will find plenty of flair for period gothic. The sombre ghostly girl and her bouncing ball (it often appears, plopping down a staircase or corridor, even though she is nowhere in sight) are great horror movie motifs. Sadly, the English dubbing is rather lame as usual, and the DVD's available of this film in English are reportedly not the greatest image quality. it would be nice to see this in widescreen and re-mastered, and apparently there is an Australian DVD release that has managed this...let's hope some copies of that make their way around the world.
