A lot has changed since the original '70s-era gang of Scooby-Doo fans gave way to today's followers of the hipster mystery cartoon series. For one, nowadays kids don't have to wait around for the half-hour Saturday morning show- -they can pick up a copy of Scooby-Doo and the Alien Invaders. All the familiar elements are here; even the groovy green Mystery Machine makes a comeback, but it isn't as reliable as it used to be. At the outset of Alien Invaders, it breaks down, leaving the crime-solving crew stranded in a creepy desert town overrun by aliens. From there, the plot unwinds faster than Scooby can down a box of his namesake snacks. A band of swollen-headed purple and green space guys--Zoinks--send the terrified teens scrambling for cover, but it's not long before the quick-witted gang figures out that there's a team of bad guys behind the bug-eyed masks. That's not to say, though, that real-life aliens aren't also roaming the streets, as Shag and Scoob (who hook up in an unprecedented Scooby-Doo romance with a peace sign-wearing babe and her equally hip dog) discover in the course of clearing out of the phony aliens' hair-raising path. To longtime viewers, the love angle seems unsettling; it steals from the tightness of the mystery team. Still, with so much creepy fun to get caught up in, it's a minor complaint. Scott Innes, the modern-day voice of both Shaggy and Scooby, nails both parts, and Jennifer Love Hewitt fans also will want to tune in--she sings the Scooby theme song. --Tammy La Gorce

CUTE.......2007-04-10
My four year old granddaughter loves this. She's watched it several times and I expect before it grows old she'll have the dialogue memorized!
excellent.......2007-04-10
excellent. I am a scooby doo fanatic. I love all scooby doo movies, etc.
Scooby Doo.......2006-08-28
I actually bought this movie for my son, who is Scooby Doo crazy. He thought it was ok, but a fair warning for parents, in this movie the aliens are real.... So be ready for questions.
Mediocre At Best.......2006-07-11
If you're expecting the same power and intensity of "Scooby Doo On Zombie Island" or "Scooby Doo and the Witch's Ghost," then you are setting yourself up for a disappointment. It is possible that certain powers felt that the first 2 Scooby movies were too much for children, but with this 3rd movie come a loss of impact, suspense, character development, and even mystery. It may be true that even a medocre Scooby movie is better than no Scooby movie at all, but this movie is almost boring after "Zombie Island" or "Witch's Ghost." Well, Scooby and the gang have car trouble in a desert. Fred, Daphne, and Velmah go on foot for help while Scooby and Shaggy spot what may be an alien invasion. With their famous and hilarious cowardly ways, they run and eventually meet the rest of the gang at a restaurant. At the restaurant, the gang is surprised that the other patrons don't seem so surprised about the presence of aliens. We also meet Lester who appears eccentric but still aware of what has been going on in the area. Lester lets the gang stay the night, and Scooby and Shaggy have their first encounter with the possible 'aliens.' Moving on, Scooby and Shaggy meet Amber and Crystal, and are attracted to them. They later meet the mechanic Buck as well as a team of scientists (that we already have met). Unlike "Zombie Island" and "Witch's Ghost," the misleads are not really well drawn. Also, rather than being surprised by the discovery of the villains, we are likely to be somewhat disappointed that it was so obvious. Even when we are presented with the most unusual character in this story (in this case it seems pointless to try to hide anything) it's nothing most people couldn't have figured out. I won't deny that there are some good moments in this movie. (For undoubtedly the first time, Scooby and Shaggy go to a restaurant and want nothing!) But even the old episodes were usually better than this movie. Parents may not have to screen this movie, but it is likely that even children will fall asleep during this one. Thank goodness for the eventual "Legend of the Vampire" and "Aloha Scooby Doo."

Let's face it: a movie in which Louise Fletcher eats a bullfrog can't be all that bad. Indeed, Tobe Hooper's remake of the 1953 classic Invaders from Mars is a total hoot, remaining loyal to the original while serving up a kaleidoscopic orgy of fang-toothed beasties, dazzling pyrotechnics, and enough wretched dialogue to choke its enthusiastic cast. If anything, Hooper's too enamored of the original, and with amateur actor Hunter Carson (Paris, Texas) as the boy-who-cried-Martian, he can't sustain the original's eerily paranoid atmosphere. This big-budget Invaders compensates with campy humor (especially from evil schoolmarm Fletcher) and cool special effects by Star Wars innovator John Dykstra. Carson's real-life mom (Karen Black) plays the school nurse who believes the boy's warning of invasion, and Jimmy Hunt--who played the kid in the original--brings everything full circle as a Martian-possessed policeman. Watch the original, then enjoy this less effective but equally entertaining remake. --Jeff Shannon

One of those.......2007-03-21
This is one of those films that some people absolutely love, but I think most are ultimately disappointed with. A mostly tongue in cheek movie with very few scares, this one pales when compared to the original. Simply put, the story is of a boy who sees a Martian spaceship land not far from his home, yet no one will believe him and soon people start acting strangely, including his parents. A star for the great Karen Black appearing in the film, she does her best. This movie is for people who think "Explorers" was a great science fiction movie. It is mostly silly stuff and worth a rental at best, but no a purchase.
Classic!.......2007-02-07
I love this movie! It is a classic sci-fy. It is a re-make of the movie from the 50's and is really well done. The extra footage is interesting and they show how everything was created for the film. The only disappointment is that they changed some scenes from the VHS version when they digitally remastered it. They also left some really good scenes out. But the digital quality is amazing. I think it would be best to have this movie in both VHS and DVD.
Terrible!.......2006-08-15
Tobe Hooper had a number of screen successes and then directed this??? What was he thinking? The movie alternates between kitschy-camp and parody. If this film is supposed to be a send-up of the original, it failed miserably. Conversely, if this was supposed to be a hip, insider's sci-fi flick, it seems so very self-conscious and phony. At least "Mars Attacks!" never took itself seriously. A marvelous cast (Timothy Bottoms, Louise Fletcher, Larraine Newman, to name a few) is completely wasted in what undoubtedly will become a Worst Movie of All Time award recipient.
Invaders from Mars.......2005-09-20
Another must see B movie!!! You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll kiss six bucks goodbey.
Penny for Your Thoughts.......2004-10-26
Before I start my review I'd like to say that Timothy Bottoms sure looks like George W. Bush(ironically, his character in the film is named George). I don't know if this film is trying to be a homage or a parody of 1950's sci-fi films. Either way, it does not succeed. To the films detriment, the make-up and special effects aren't really that good considering that they were designed by Oscar winners John Dykstra and Stan Winston. The film doesn't move that well;it just kind of lumbers along. The adult actors are adequate but not outstanding. Louise Fletcher seems to be channeling Nurse Ratched in her role as the mean biology teacher. Bud Cort(of "Harold and Maude" fame) has a strange little role as a scientist. What keeps this film grounded is the performance of young Hunter Carson(real-life son of co-star Karen Black) as David Gardner, the kid who sees all the strange goings on but is having a hard time convincing the adults. He makes the film watchable. If not for him I would rate this film two stars instead of three.

Having scored a cult hit with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, horror director Tobe Hooper was recruited by Steven Spielberg to direct Poltergeist, and the success of that fright flick allowed Hooper to pursue some big-budgets projects of his own, including the expensive vampire flop Lifeforce and this 1986 remake of the 1953 horror/science fiction classic Invaders from Mars. Like the original, the remake is told almost entirely from the point of view of a young boy (Hunter Carson, from Paris, Texas) who witnesses an alien invasion in his hometown. Even his parents fall prey to the Martian invaders (affected humans have telltale probe wounds on their necks!), and the boy eventually comes face to ugly face with the not-so-friendly E.T.s. Critically panned at the time of its release, this remake has since gained a loyal following of its own. Part camp, part frightening fantasy, it's the kind of creepy sci-fi that's great for a rainy weekend with the kids. --Jeff Shannon

The cold-war paranoia of the McCarthy era had America in its grip when the original Invaders from Mars was released in 1953, and this atmospheric, highly influential science fiction film--the first of its kind to be filmed in color--was perfectly in tune with the mood of its time. Jimmy Hunt plays the quintessential American boy of the post-war years--a freckle-faced kid named David who's curious, alert, and possibly prone to elaborate flights of fancy. Then, during a midnight thunderstorm, he witnesses the landing of a flying saucer that buries itself underground in a nearby field. David's father (Leif Erickson) indulges his son's urging to investigate... and thus begins a bizarre and chilling story of alien invasion, with David's cries of "Martians!" falling on deaf ears as more and more adults are abducted, probed, and placed under alien control.
Designed and directed by William Cameron Menzies (one of the greatest production designers of Hollywood's golden age, whose credits include Gone with the Wind), this eerie little thriller benefits from Menzies's skill at combining physical settings with psychological undercurrents of paranoid terror and resistance against the alien threat. It's still most effective for younger viewers, with Jimmy Hunt providing the story's youthful point of view. And although the malevolent aliens look campy now, with a leader who resembles a bubble-brained squid in a fishbowl, Invaders from Mars remains one of the seminal science fiction films of its time, paving the way for The War of the Worlds and the rapidly developing trend of alien-invasion thrillers. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Glad I Waited.......2007-08-30
When this movie first came out on DVD it carried a premium price (around $27). Many times I picked it up and put it back on the shelf in order to buy something a little less pricey. I really wanted the movie, not only for my collection, but also because I had never seen the entire movie. When Amazon offered it on a double bill for $14 I had to order it. Boy am I glad I waited. At seven bucks it's not a bad deal, but if I had paid twenty-seven for it, I would have been sick.
Not that this is a bad movie. Its just not on the same tier as Forbidden Planet, War of the Worlds, When Worlds Collide, etc. To rate it 5 stars would be far too generous, so based on the movie alone it gets four stars.
But then there is the terrible video quality. The picture has vertical wear lines off and on throughout the movie and often the picture is so dark that the action is incomprehensible. Oops, there goes another star.
On the positive side the director did a good job of conveying the boy's paranoia in an adult world. I guess you can read whatever subtext or cold war message you like into the movie, but I prefer to take these fifties sci-fi movies at face value. The acting tends toward the hammy side while the effects are cheesy. So there you have it. A three star ham and cheese on wry.
Quit Griping.......2007-07-25
Oh, quit your griping, all of you who rated this flick only 1 or 2 stars. There are some lines running down the center of the first few scenes, and then they disappear. The print is not bad. This movie scared the hell out of me when I was eight or nine; I dreaded spending the night alone in a dark room after watching it. Loving parents suddenly turning cold and cruel. An innocent little girl is murdered by a brain hemorrhage. Once normal people are suddenly enslaved. And, in the end, a nightmare . . . becomes a reality? The terror in this movie is relentless. And the movie has pacing; it moves along, which is a lot more than I can say for a movie like the tedious "Fire in the Sky." And that cold, impassive, oily-eyed, evil face in the glass globe - Eeeek!
Invaders from Mars, still one of the better films........2007-05-25
I'm watching the British version as I write this, I just saw the American version.
First of all I take exception that some reviews keep mentioning the zippers in the back of the martian's. What did they expect, magnetic clasp, buttons, hooks and loops? Unless you were expecting to see naked martians I'd say the zippers are just fine--they are wearing cloths and shoes you know. Nor do I really believe it falls into campy--so old it is amusingly funny. I feel they did a fine job except for that "mutant" crack they kept using as an excuse to have martian slaves or servants. The obvious science involved in this film (inside the spaceship) looked fine to me--and who cares if they turned over a can of latex paint and blew bubbles through it to simulate the martians melting walls of dirt...it looked fine to me.
This movie, though a popcorn movie, is still somewhat serious and acted very well by the kid and all the cast.
So let's get to it.
PROS:
1. Neat idea carried out properly.
2. Fine acting, that's a star.
3. Written just fine, that's a star, lots of tense moments and no filler I could spot, no sub plots.
4. Neat special effects.
5. Look at how those cuties dressed. I remember them from when I was a kid. Look at the scene where the kid runs to his mother at night. She wakes up, hair is brushed, lips properly lipsticked, the correct amount of war paint around the eyes. Yes sir, maybe we shouldn't tell them that the realitly was they all went to bed in curls and cold cream. But I got to tell you, did they all look like that outside the house...well, they tried to.
six. Just got to the end of the British version, I think there's a couple extra scenes in it!
7. Movie starts out with the right type of science fiction music and background paintings and voice-over of the day. On the back of the case it says 1953--the year I was born. They did a fine job making this a character study as well as an action movie. Even when the General's sergeant got sucked into the hole and the General says to the man restraining him, "Renaudies' been with me twenty years...we may have no counter weapon but if it's a fight they want they're going to get it!" Even that one line character study is sufficent to understand the General's mind set. Yes...above average writing.
8. Lots of stock footage showing the Army packing up equipment and moving it to the site. So what, you can't have a military unit go on manuevers just so you can get some new stock footage for a movie...not even back then.
I don't see any reason to go futher. This is one of those old classical science fiction movies that cries for popcorn and a deeper study to get its' full impact. CONS: There really aren't any no matter what everybody else says. The only thing you could have done better is updating the special effects and we've seen what Hollywood does when it remakes a movie--so we don't want that!
Looking at it more...no, definitly well written, acted and directed.
So that's it, Buy, don't rent.
NEEDS A BETTER DVD TREATMENT.......2007-05-03
"This is a very good movie with a cheesy alien suit. The DVD transfer is horrible and this film deserves better! No cheese collection is complete without it!"
Invaders from Mars.......2007-02-21
Good campy Sci-Fi flick. The only drawback to the movie is that it should be in wide screen.

The price is Wrong !!!.......2007-06-16
How can this DVD be $99.99 in any format. i havew a PAL system but not for $99 dollars. Minus well buy the Ufo as well
Invaders.......2006-03-16
This film has very little to praise it. My advice is save your money and wait for the release of the orginal tv series.
NICE TRY, BUT..........2004-07-26
THE INVADERS was one of my favorite t.v. shows when I was growing up; Roy Thinnes was superb as David Vincent, the man trying to tell the world that aliens were taking over the earth by inhabiting the bodies of humans. Twenty years after the series went off the air, THE INVADERS became a made for TV movie, and obviously a pilot for another series that didn't come to fruition. Hence, you're given a three hour movie that is not given commercial breaks; therefore, you have some tedious dialogue and redundant chases that ultimately bog the movie down. The special effects, what little they are, are below average, and the direction needed some Geritol.
Scott Bakula as the new David Vincent tries hard but ultimately his actions seem foolish and he's never really convincing as the possessed human. Richard Thomas gets by in his role, but he never possesses the menace he should. Terrance Knox as Detective Coyle has a hard time showing the changes once he's been programmed. His cocking of the head left and right is supposed to show his implant; it's actually hilarious. Elizabeth Pena brings no life to her role as Bakula's reluctant assistant; needed an actress with more vitality and intensity. Pena always seems to underplay her roles to the point she looks bored. Thinnes himself makes a cameo appearance and seems as excited as a slug.
THE INVADERS is not awful; it entertains, even at its lengthy three hours; it's ending is also very disappointing.
Amazing!.......2003-02-08
One of the best scifi alien-related movies I've seen so far, and I've seen a lot of them.
No clue as to why this movie isn't popular here in the US, in Germany it was a hit. It also seems to be very hard to find for some reason.
Go to the Original TV Series.......2001-02-03
Original version is far better that this "pilot" version. Special effects in the Quinn Martin Production were so real... look at the way this version show the death of an alien. Did you see the UFO's here? And the main character has nothing to do compared to the famous David Vincent role. Forget it!

Bubbles in bottles, grapes, and gas, the first half of this video covers everyone's favorite party drink: champagne. This, the last video in the five-tape series, Jancis Robinson's Wine Course, is perhaps the most fun as Robinson demonstrates how winemakers get the bubbles in bubbly. You'll also learn how to open these bottle without putting an eye out! The last course in the series, "Grape Invaders" shows how Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are taking over the wine industry (as she says, the "chocolate and vanilla" of the wine world), and she introduces us to some of the indigenous wines of Spain. As always, Robinson focuses as much on the people of the wine industry as the wine itself, and this is a delightful end to an informative series. --Jenny Brown
