Product Description
Earth is under attack by the ultra-powerful Mysterons and one man holds the key to survival--Captain Scarlet!During a mission to Mars in 2068, agents of earth's Spectrum security force start an interplanetary war when they destroy the ancient city of the Mysterons, an invisible race with the ability to assume the form of any object or person they destroy. But their attempt to take over Spectrum's top agent--Captain Scarlet--fails, and he becomes their most powerful and implacable enemy. With stunning special effects, a new generation of realistic Supermarionation puppets, and a darker, more serious tone than its predecessors, CAPTAIN SCARLET AND THE MYSTERONS was producer Gerry Anderson's (Space: 1999, Stingray, UFO, Thunderbirds) most ambitious series. This exclusive DVD set includes all 32 episodes, available uncut and digitally remastered for the first time.

First broadcast in the United Kingdom in 1967, Captain Scarlet was the most grownup of all Gerry Anderson's SuperMarionation adventures. Of course there are gadgets and toy-friendly machines galore--like the Spectrum Pursuit Vehicle, the Angel Aircraft, and Cloudbase itself--but, unlike the colorful fantasies of Stingray and Thunderbirds, this series' concern with an implacable, vengeful enemy, conspiracies, and double agents drew its inspiration from James Bond and the cold war spy dramas of the 1960s. Special effects whiz Derek Meddings instills the action sequences with a truly Bondian grandeur and, like the sinister SPECTRE of the Bond films, the Martian Mysterons seem all the more hostile for their unseen presence, their agents infiltrating every organization dedicated to their destruction, just as it seemed the Soviets were doing at the time. The indestructible Captain Scarlet is killed then resurrected every week (though not like South Park's Kenny), and more often than not the Mysterons emerge triumphant, and always undefeated. The varied cast of Spectrum agents and their voice characterizations also aim at verisimilitude (Captain Scarlet, voiced by Francis Matthews, sounds like a grim Cary Grant), while the puppetry is more realistic than ever. Now with newly remastered picture and Dolby 5.1 surround sound for the DVD release, Captain Scarlet still looks and sounds like the epitome of '60s cool. For Americans, this is the first time the show--consisting of 32 episodes--has been available. --Mark Walker
Customer Reviews:
It's OK but the stunning new 21st century series is far better than this puppet original for todays kids.......2007-01-13
I never really completely enjoyed 'Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons' as a kid (I was 11 when it first aired in Sept 1967). I think it was a bit too dark and often the episodes never resolved with a happy ending, plus the break neck action often exposed the limitations of the model/puppet special effects of the time. I did sit down and watch most epsiodes, but it didn't attract the entire family in the way Thunderbirds had done earlier. However this series has just been remade by Gerry Anderson using computer animation and this new series is first rate, Angels really do look like they could fly, spectrum pursuit vehicles do just that, and the charactor's are naturally more fluid and far less wooden. This leads to an even darker storyline and fantastic action sequences, although perhaps for the very young the body count is a bit high - leading to a 12 rating in series two. Despite Destiny Angel putting in a strong show for the ladies, my daughter has shown no interest, prefering the likes of Worst Witch and My parents are aliens. If your kids (and probably their dads) like Thunderbirds, then I'd skip this old puppet version and look out for the 'New Captain Scarlet' DVD set (seasons 1 & 2 were released in region two last year). TVTome probably says it all when they write "Gerry Anderson's classic cult 1960s TV series, `Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons' is getting a 21st centry make over in the most impressive animated series to hit kids' TV this century". However for adults of a certain age this original puppet series will no doubt be the bees knees for childhood nostalgia - although being a bit older I invested in Fireball XL5 instead (I do miss the glorious colour of later 60s series Captain Scarlet & Thunderbirds though).
Gerry Andersons most ambitious series???.......2006-12-27
This series is very clearly the work of Gerry Anderson, but the writing and production values are way off the mark... seems almost like it was done BEFORE Thunderbirds rather than after, and to think he abandoned Thunderbirds second season to make this ???? The marionettes look better, more in human scale, but are far more stiff and nearly totally inarticulate. Infact they never walk but always use convienient airport style moving walkways and seats and desks etc... kinda like old fashioned Barbies in sci fi sets and backrounds. These sets are intially very cool, but upon closer examination look pretty cheesey.. but the worst thing about this series is the plot. Horrible!!! For instance, at the beginning of each episode you hear a voice over with the same stock footage again and again...
" This is the voice of the Mysterons. We know you can hear us Earth men.. Our retaliation against your unprovoked attack will be slow.. painfully slow... infact we will BORE you to death..."
I changed the last line or so.. but its true.... the show plods along with the enemy "Mysterons" from Mars ( dumb ) giving away their plans at the start of each episode.. still the models are fun and puppets die all the time, sometimes horribly... so it's an ok ride when there is nothing else to watch.
"SPECTRUM is green...." .......2006-07-07
What a delight it is to find this series available in DVD format! As a kid, I fondly recall watching this syndicated program after school along with a co-installment of that popular Japanese import, "Ultra Man" on KTVU Channel 2, right here in the SF Bay Area.
As a kid, I thought "Ultra Man" was downright silly with some guy in a scuba suit (you could clearly see the zipper running along the back!) spray painted silver and wearing a cheap plastic helmet stomping about a miniature set of Tokyo, but it was the technical brilliance of "Captain Scarlet" that I recall most of all. The extras to this DVD set are nice, but hardly generous-mostly still frame catches of the individual puppets and some behind-the-scenes shots. In my opinion, the commentary by Anderson was expected and is most welcome.
I marvelled at the genius of Gerry Anderson and the technicians who created these puppets so lifelike, it was downright creepy, but in a fascinating way. Each puppet or character was distinctive from the others and so detailed that the puppetters who made them spared no detail--even adding a five o'clock shadow to the face of our hero and substituting, for instance, a close up a human hand when specific objects needed to be grasped or held.
Unlike most progamming aimed at children, Captain Scarlet was decidedly mature and serious. It was not uncommon to see a puppet actually killed, burned or "bleeding"--not your typical programming aimed at children. Unusual, to say the least. Of course, CGI was unheard of then, but the use of miniatures of various scales and the special effects were impressive for the day and far more realistic-looking than those seen on "Stingray" or "The Thunderbirds." The two series that would follow, "Secret Service" and the popular "Joe 90," would later capitalize on these advancements in "Supermarionation" seen in Captain Scarlet.
The stories (approximately 25-30 mins in length), were as interesting as they were entertaining. I think I finshed viewing the entire set in about two or three evenings, and I am looking forward to viewing my set of "Secret Service" soon.
Captain Scarlet.......2006-02-25
I bought this as a gift and the first set had defective sound on all four DVDs. Amazon quickly replaced this with a new DVD set, which turned out to be even more defective than the first. I don't know anything about the cartoon or its production values, but I can tell you that the distributor made a very poor-quality product.
A Supermarionation Sci-Fi production.......2005-10-03
"Captain Scarlet" (1967 - 32 episodes), is a brilliant production of the English couple Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, of "Thunderbirds", responsible for the Supermarionation technique that used plastic marionettes operated by fine threads of nylon. The plot starts in 2068 when the Spectrum organization - responsible for the world-wide peace - was making research in the Mars planet and, without thinking, attacks the base of the Mysterons. The attitude causes a great misunderstanding since the aliens were pacific. Hurt, they swear to destroy the human civilization for judging us maleficent and dangerous.
After being dominated by the Mysterons, Captain Scarlet - the one direct responsible for Mars exploration - managed to revert the process and becomes immortal. The humanity had sufficient evolved to elect a world-wide president and Captain Scarlet was charged to protect him of the terrible attacks of the Mysterons. Main agent of the Spectrum, he will use his powers to fight against the powerful extraterrestrial race that has the power to invade and to take control of the body of the human beings.

Finally! Captain Scarlett Gets a Decent Transfer!.......2006-07-23
Captain Scarlett is a much under rated movie patterned after Robin Hood and often compared. Of course it's not as good as the best swashbuckler ever! It is fun, and since it was filmed back in 1953 (in technicolor) it has the feel of the greats like Robin Hood and Ivanhoe, and Scaramouche; an undefinable something that just isn't carried over to the 21st century modern remakes. A good portion of the film was shot out of doors, and the acting and costumes get an above average rating. All that being said, i had an old poor quality vhs copy i thought I'd upgrade. I tried the Family Value "digitally remastered" dvd first and the movie wasn't even on the dvd! I found another version; and again I was ripped off; the transfer was defective, and the movie was later actually recalled by the maker and substituted by another 2 in 1 movie WITHOUT Captain Scarlett! I'd just about given up hope of ever finding this movie on any format, when i stumbled on this unlikely pairing on a double sided dvd from 2002; The Fat Spy on one side, and the Captain on the other! Not only did it have a full size case, and actual bonus features including complete reviews on the case and as a dvd option, scene selection, biographies, and a trivia quiz. The transfer looks to be direct from film, from a well preserved copy! The wonderful technicolor is all there, and shows only minor fading. Detail while not up to today's digital age, is as good as it gets. The soundtrack was clear and understandable! All this goes for The Fat Spy too! Again it looks like a direct from film transfer from a well preserved copy! Apparently the makers of this dvd cared. This is believable, because if you are lucky enough to find one of these, it turns out that this is not a made in China dvd, and instead was made in Canada by an outfit that apparently cared about producing a watchable result!

Customers of Marengo Films.......2001-07-30
To all of you fantastic people who bought this version of Cyrano... please e-mail us via our website at marengofilms.com. We recalled this DVD months ago. Cyrano is a fantastic hero and we found a fantastic version which we paired with The Son of Monte Cristo... a far superior film to Captain Scarlett.
It would be our pleasure to furnish this new DVD to you free of charge... just send us your old Cyrano... we will include another DVD alongside Cyrano as our way of letting you know that we appreciate your business and would be humbled to keep you as a customer.
Cyrano would do no less and neither will we...

Truly worthless........2001-07-12
Thirty seconds into Cyrano (murkier than any presentation I ever saw on television), I started skipping around in it to see if the quality improved. When it didn't, I hit the Stop button, only to be stunned by the image of the, um, "busty" female mentioned in an earlier review. What on earth were the folks at "Marengo Films" thinking? Were they thinking at all? I cannot imagine.
This DVD has no redeeming feature. I've never been so disappointed with a product, and I hope that someone else releases a good copy of the Ferrer film, because it deserves far better than this.
Great Movie - Terrible DVD.......2001-06-14
My all-time favorite movie. Worst copy of any movie I've ever seen on any DVD or VHS. However, I e-mailed the manufacturer, and a representative said that he agreed, and that that copy should never have been released. He said that they are coming out with a much better one. ...
A disservice to a classic.......2001-05-22
I was initially excited to get Ferrer's Cyrano de Bergerac, a role for which he rightfully got an Oscar. Unfortunately, Marengo Films did an extremely POOR job of transferring to DVD, with the film jittering and the sound garbled in many places. No attempt was made to clean or restore the film, so the overall experience is disappointing.
Poor quality.......2001-05-04
This version of Cyrano is my favorite, but the quality of this DVD is very poor - the video is dark and grainy. I have a VHS published by Republic Pictures Home Video which is totally superior.
Also, on my Sony DVD player this DVD overwrites the internal image the player displays when you hit 'stop' - with a picture of a busty woman. Totally unprofessional.
AVOID, and hope someone else puts this wonderful film out on DVD.

Long John Silver, After the Treasure Island adventure, Long John Silver turns up on a British Caribbean island, where he hears that rival pirate Mendoza has taken the ship carrying the governor's daughter...and his young friend Jim Hawkins. Naturally, there's more to his rescue plan than meets the eye; he hopes to get a new ship and go back for more treasure...
Captain Scarlett, Richard Greene stars in the medium-budget swashbuckler Captain Scarlet. Greene plays the title character, a Gallic Robin Hood, who seeks to reclaim his birthright from the usurping Duke of Corlaine (Manolo Fabregas). Forming a group of sort-of-merry men, Captain Scarlet rallies the countryside to take up arms against the despotic duke. In addition, he saves Princess Maria (Leonora Amar) from various fates worse than death at the hands of lecherous Count Villiers (Eduardo Norriega). The preponderance of Latino names in the cast of Captain Scarlet is a tip-off that the film was lensed in Mexico rather than France.

Long John Silver's Return To Treasure Island/Captain Scarlett & Royal Wedding/Second Chorus
Long John Silver's Return To Treasure Island:Silver (Robert Newton) rescues a governor's daughter, & lines his own pockets in the process. Next, Long John quells a mutiny & prevents his young friend Jim Hawkins (Kit Taylor) from having to walk the plank. Finally, Long John & Jim arrive at Treasure Island, where they're forced to duke it out with the men of Silver's old enemy Mendoza (Lloyd Burrell). Connie Gilchrist costars as Purity, Long John's on-and-off pubkeeper sweetheart.
Captain Scarlet: A French Robin Hood type: Captain Scarlet (Richard Greene), who seeks to reclaim his birthright from the usurping Duke of Corlaine (Manolo Fabregas). Captain Scarlet & his men rally the countryside to take up arms against the despotic duke & saves Princess Maria (Leonora Amar) from lecherous Count Villiers (Eduardo Norriega).
Royal Wedding: Shipboard, Fred Astaire & Jane Powell head to England to perform at the palace. Powell breaks up the act when she falls in love with blueblooded Peter Lawford. Astaire himself finds romance in the form of Sarah Churchill , and the 4 happy lovers gleefully attend the Royal Wedding. Also stars: Albert Sharpe, & Keenan Wynn, hilarious as twin cousins. First-rate musical numbers. The Astaire/Powell duets are entertaining ; the real magic, in Astaire's two solos: the hat-rack duet & the now-legendary tap-dance on the ceiling!
Second Chorus: Fred Astaire and Burgess Meredith play Danny O'Neill & Hank Taylor, friendly-enemy musicians who after spending 7 years in a college band aspire to join the Artie Shaw Orchestra. Danny & Hank also spend a lot of time vying over their pretty manager Ellen Miller (Paulette Goddard). Guess who wins her hand in this picture? Charles Butterworth steals the show as Mr. Chisholm, a music-loving eccentric who finances Shaw's "swing concerto" concert at Carnegie Hall. Great Fred Astaire dances, too!

Piece of Junk .......2006-03-20
This company appears to make the worst "budget" DVDS (ie: sold in dollar stores) on the market. I've been burned before but I took a chance since I'm a fan of Richard Greene's and had never seen CAPTAIN SCARLETT. Well guess what - CAPTAIN SCARLETT is not on this DVD!!! In it's place we have the 1933 version of THE SCARLETT LETTER - with the opening and closing credits missing!!
I flipped it over to check out MUTINY and it is there at least but the print is pretty bad, washed out colors, scratchy, lines, etc. I will do my best to avoid this company's product in the future - although I don't see the actual company name anywhere on the covers!! Unless it is "Family Value Collections" which is written in a small box on the box. The DVD covers are similar though for their various titles so they are easy to spot. I realize you can't expect perfection for a buck but at least you do have a right to expect the movie that is supposed to be on the DVD!!
