After he pushed the envelope of computer-generated special effects in The Abyss, director James Cameron turned this hotly anticipated sequel to Terminator into a well-written, action-packed showcase for advanced special effects and for one of the most invincible villains ever imagined. Terminator 2: Judgment Day is a legitimate sequel: there's more story to tell about a hulking, leather-clad android (Arnold Schwarzenegger) who arrives from the future to protect a rebellious teenager and future leader (Edward Furlong) from being killed by the tenacious T-1000 robot (Robert Patrick), whose liquid-metal construction makes him seemingly unstoppable. The fate of the future lies in the balance, with Linda Hamilton (who would later marry her director) reprising her role as the rugged woman whose son will change the course of history. --Jeff Shannon

Co-written, produced and directed by James Cameron ("The Terminator," "Aliens," "Titanic), this visual tour de force is also a touching story of survival.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal Transfer.......2007-09-13

I own all DVD editions of T2, including the T2 Ultimate Edition. The transfer quality of the Extreme Edition is head and shoulders above the Ultimate Edition. I recommend purchasing this version even if you have the others.

Why did I buy it? I recently purchased an HD DVD player and it exposed the lower quality transfer of the Ultimate Edition. I immediately noticed a difference when I played this version (Extreme) on my HD DVD player. With the exception of the UK or French T2 HD DVDs, this is the best version of T2 available.

5 out of 5 stars The Movie: Must Have. The DVD: Must Have.......2007-09-05

This ranks among The Godfather, Part II (Two-Disc Widescreen Edition), Spider-Man 2 (Widescreen Special Edition) and Aliens (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) as one of the few sequels to surpass the original. Coincidentally, this is created by the same man who gave us Aliens.

I'm sure all of you know the story, Arnold Schwarzenegger is sent back in time by John Connot to protect his young self from the T-1000. This movie is action packed and amazing when it comes to technology. The T-1000 looks even better than most of the movie being produced today.

But the real treat here is the DVD. Two Discs jam packed full of features. It includes numerous features, three, count them, three versions of the movie, theatrical, special, and extended editons of the movie. It also includes a very busy audio commentary, the script anf 700+ storyboards. There's so much on this disc it'd take me hours just to list all of it.

This is a Must Have. Definite Must Have. The movie is wonderful and the DVD complements it perfectly.

5 out of 5 stars Best Sci Fi Movie Ever.......2007-08-23

Although it came out in the 1980's i haven't seen any film that is more sci fi than terminator 2 . the dvd it self was of the best i' ve ever seen. The special effects were outstanding and they even got an academy award for it, aside from the special effects it also had a good storyline. It is about John Connor who is going to be very important in the future against skynet, has to be saved because skynet has sent a time travellling cyborg to kill him from existing in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Classic, with some nice extras on the DVD.......2007-08-01

If you are seeking the turning point in Computer Generated Films, Terminator 2 marks the first true success of it, with the morphing Terminator cop, originally influenced by films like Willow and The Abyss, both with marked CGI effects.

The film is a must for Terminator fans, with much action and gunfire, with Arnold's trademark style. Some great explosions, though the film has slow times for story telling.

The extras are interesting, but the HD version is only good on a PC with a specific setup with Windows, being released before true HD players. Commentary and extras are good in general though. Recommend fans buy this version.

5 out of 5 stars They really don't make 'em like this anymore.......2007-07-24

It is interesting to watch this fifteen years later and see how it holds up. This was the movie that ushered in the era of digital sound, it also showed morphing, environment mapping and these things that were already present in much shorter form in The Abyss (Special Edition) during the water creature sequence.

From the plot standpoint, this is the only Terminator movie that could have worked without Arnie. And maybe this is not a coincidence, it probably was conceived that way. If Arnold would have demanded too big a paycheck, this probably would have become "Sara and John get chased by the T-1000". And it probably would have been almost as good. That being said, it is great to have Arnie back, because when the first part had him act like a (pretty scary) machine, here he is in a way more human than in most of his other roles where he plays actual humans.

One could almost be a bit nostalgic for the time when Hollywood could still produce carefully thought-out blockbusters that rocked and even had a bit of wit. Watching "Die Hard 4" a few weeks ago was a good reminder how deeply the American film industry has fallen since then.

As far as the extra features on the DVD are concerned, I am grateful that James Cameron did not include that horrible sugar-coated coda in the theater version. It would have single-handedly wiped out the whole movie, it is so cringe-inducing. (Yes, even more cringe-inducing than Arnold's acting and the occasional bad SFX.)

In "Terminator 2", Cameron gives us great action scenes, punctuated by slower, more dialogue-heavy scenes. The film is long because it takes its time to draw its characters, and it does not rush to its conclusion but lets us savor it.

A few things look a bit ridiculous of course, like the obvious puppet of Arnie when he walks towards the cops at Cyberdyne while being shot at and that determinedly downtempo synthesizer music in some of the action scenes sometimes is a little embarrassing. Most cell phones can probably synthesize better sound today. But that does not detract from the accomplishment of the movie, which is built on character, situation, and a solid understanding of pacing.

In addition to boasting one of the most astonishing opening sequences in the history of extreme-sports filmmaking, Billabong Odyssey offers a breathtaking survey of big-wave surfing at a pivotal stage in its evolution. With the advent of Jet-Ski Waverunners used for "tow-in" access to gigantic waves that paddle-surfers could never reach, this three-year, globe-trotting quest for the world's biggest waves is nothing less than spectacular. As documentaries go it's a bit cruder than 2003's other surfing movie, Step Into Liquid, and many of the same world-class surfers appear in both films (including 49-year-old Ken Bradshaw, still going strong). But Billabong is unrivaled in its abundance of jaw-dropping footage--most of it shot from helicopters hovering in close proximity--showing the sheer, terrifying scale of breaking "tubes"--some reaching 100 feet--at the most challenging big-wave locations on the planet, including Maverick's at Santa Cruz, California; Cortes Bank off the Pacific Coast; "Cyclops" in Australia; Mundaka, Spain; and the treacherous "Jaws" reef on the coast of Maui, Hawaii.

While touching on various hot topics such as safety training, serious wipe-outs, swell-tracking technology, female surfers (like the great Layne Beachley), and hydrofoil surfboards (billed as "the future of the sport"), director Philip Boston applies a casual, competitive structure that's too diffuse and lightweight to have much impact. But when the film focuses on the climactic "Jaws" showdown between Carlos Burle and Mike Parsons, Billabong Odyssey achieves a state of raw power and spiritual intensity, culminating in Parsons' best-ever 10-point ride on a massive tube that constantly threatens to consume him. As dozens of adrenaline-junkie surfers strive for new horizons of unprecedented skill, Billabong Odyssey chronicles their efforts with amazing bird's-eye cinematography. For surfers and non-surfers alike, this movie must be seen to be believed. --Jeff Shannon

I definitely enjoyed this movie for the shear terror you feel every time you see these madmen screaming across the waves with thousands of pounds of liquid ready to crush them at a moments notice. I also loved it for the fact that it showed all of these big named surfers getting together and going to most of the big name waves and just doing some awesome surfing.

Lords of Dogtown captures the sheer kinetic joy of skateboarding like no other movie (except, perhaps, Dogtown and Z Boys, a documentary about the very skateboarders this movie depicts). Set in the mid-1970s in Venice, CA--a.k.a. Dogtown--the movie starts with three young aspiring surfers turned skateboarders: Stacy (John Robinson, Elephant), Jay (Emile Hirsch, The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys), and Tony (Victor Rasuk, Raising Victor Vargas). When alpha-stoner Skip (Heath Ledger, A Knight's Tale) recognizes the potential of skateboarding as a new sport, his surf shop becomes the center of the boys' universe. They swiftly rise as skateboarding stars and find their brotherhood threatened by sex, money, fame, and ego--it's a common enough story, but director Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen) has a gift for capturing the raw messiness of life. Lords of Dogtown seems to unfold haphazardly, yet every scene moves the increasingly dizzy rise (or fall) of each skater forward with headlong momentum. The excellent cast includes Rebecca De Mornay (Risky Business), Johnny Knoxville (Jackass: The Movie), and Nikki Reed (Thirteen). Lords of Dogtown, written by skater Stacy Peralta (and based on his own life), both celebrates the excitement of testosterone-fueled recklessness and quietly reflects on the cost of getting what you want. --Bret Fetzer

Description

LORDS OF DOGTOWN tells the radical true story behind three teenage surfers from Venice Beach, California, who took skateboarding to the extreme and changed the world of sports forever. Stacy Peralta (John Robinson, Elephant), Tony Alva (Victor Rasuk, Raising Victor Vargas) and Jay Adams (Emile Hirsch, The Girl Next Door) are the Z-Boys, a bunch of nobodies until they create a new style of skateboarding that becomes a worldwide phenomenon. But when their hobby becomes a business, the success shreds their friendship. Directed by Catherine Hardwicke (thirteen) and written by Stacy Peralta, Lords of Dogtown is "...a dazzling daredevil ride." (Peter Travers, ROLLING STONE)

3 out of 5 stars Lords of something, but I am not so sure about Dogtown..........2007-08-16

That's right. I do things in pairs. After doubly watching the regular version of "Dogtown and Z-Boys" as well as listening to the audio commentary, I decided to watch the Catherine Hardwicke full-fledged Hollywood version of Peralta's voice. With two audio commentaries, plenty of behind the scenes information, as well as a cornucopia of in-your-face skateboarding, I believe I have seen every angle of this film - from Catherine's vision to the completely misrepresented time frame for these three young friends that changed history. This is the "unleashed/unrated" version, and you are in for a treat. Catherine and team left no stone unturned and brought us the Z-Boys with loud 70s music, tween issues, and a story that was connected with the feeblest of string. For those reading this review, I am going to compare the two films - why? Not only because I can, but because these two - both "Lords of Dogtown" and "Dogtown and Z-Boys" are companion films. All due in part to an issue in Rolling Stone magazine, these two films were allowed a green light - one was made with heart, passion, and a sense of nostalgia, while the other (still using the same scribe), was made with the green of the dollar deeply in mind. It isn't the fact that I disliked "Lords of Dogtown", I just finished watching it three times, it was the fact that I think it over amplifies the truth and dissolves the passion that Peralta created with his documentary.

Hardwicke, whom many of you remember as the brain child behind the fabulously gritty drama "thirteen", helms this project with the same gumption that she enlisted for her prior film. Using some of the same crew, same filming technique, and an overhyped budget this film demonstrates that even the dirtiest of teen struggles can be glossed over to Hollywood standards. Egos aside, we are handed a Hardwicke special which includes (but is not limited to) shirtless tween hunks, a sense of invincibility over adults, a rockin' good soundtrack, a time frame that breaks all borders, and finally two actual stars that would be used to introduce an older audience that may not be familiar with teen main characters to pack theaters and make sure someone's child gets a college tuition. I am harsh with this film - again, why? - because this was supposed to be a group that was anti-establishment, anti-normality, anti-boundaries, yet seemed to fit well within this Hollywood box. I witnessed the innovators of a generation, sans Jay Adams, sell their souls for corporate glory. Sure, they may have wanted their story to be told for a new generation of skaters, but there could have been a better way to portray this creativity, struggle, and eventual breakdown of friendships. This was supposed to be like the grittier "Stand by Me", when instead it felt like Disney was an independent benefactor.

I thought Hardwicke's choice of cinematography, camera angle, and story placement seemed dated. She did this already in "thirteen", I wanted her to explore more boundaries, stronger moments, and really define herself as a director. Instead, I watched three times (two audio commentaries plague this disc) a director mimic their already golden film - even the choice of casting some of the same actors from "thirteen". After watching "Dogtown and Z-Boys", I was prepared to see a better side to their story. I wanted Hardwicke to take me places that Peralta's minimal budget couldn't. With Peralta writing the story, I didn't think he would allow anything to slip by. I was wrong. His choice to create small, more insignificant characters to help build credibility in our central three characters was pathetic. I wanted Peralta to interact with everyone from the Zephyr skate team, not just Jay, Tony, and himself. This was a collaborative effort from everyone, and not giving everyone their moment in the spotlight just seemed to make me grumpy. I loved hearing everyone's voice during the "Dogtown and Z-Boys" film, and it hurt to just be focused on three while others were equally as successful. If this were the case, we should have had only one story - instead of trying to intermingle everything together. Stories were dropped, players were disrespected, and the true story became a muddled mess of semi-truth and Hollywood truth. Our actors did what they could, but were shaky as the main characters. John Robinson felt like he was back filming "Elephant 2", I just couldn't see him as any other character. Emile Hirsch was goofy, while I realized that Jay Adams was crazy (as we all know someone from our past like him), he just came off as arrogant and acting like he was a tormented teen. His scene on the burned pier with Heath was laughable at best. Victor, as Tony Alva, didn't carry the weight he was supposed to. He wasn't the best of the group, but he was the strongest, but Victor couldn't put any strength behind him. The three players did a decent job, but it was obvious from the opening scene that they weren't going to win awards for their portrayals.

I must compliment Hardwicke for her choice of Heath Ledger as Skip. From the documentary to the silver screen, Ledger did an amazing job of bringing this pivotal character to life. His voice, his mannerisms, his taut demeanor was exactly like watching the documentary. I loved it. It gave me faith that Heath could pull off The Joker in the upcoming "Batman" film. Alas, I cannot say the same for Rebecca De Mornay (who needs to do some independent work to get back into the business) and Johnny Knoxville. He is growing into an actor, but this was not the right character for him to tackle. Tony's financier needed to be meaner, pushier, and darker - none of which came from funnyman Knoxville. Everyone else involved seemed to hit their stride, as I enjoyed seeing some of my favorites playing cameo roles throughout the film. I must give credit to Hardwicke here as well for really bringing some (not all) of these guys into the project - I just wish she would have listened to them more when developing her style. She should have at least used all of them in the commentary, by just using Peralta and Alva, we knew who her favorites were. Where was Skip's side of the story?

Overall, I cannot say that this film compares in anyway, shape, or form to the documentary that Peralta created. I know that he wrote this film too, but it was obvious that one was written with the soul and the other was developed for the money. "Dogtown and Z-Boys" spoke for itself, giving us a raw taste of what life was like back in the 70s on Venice Beach and in innovation that the surfers had for bringing a new style of sport into the limelight. I loved the music again, "Maggie May" near the end really struck a chord for me and developed Skip into this true player. I cannot suggest this film to friends because I will be devoting my time to suggesting the more impassioned "Dogtown and Z-Boys" - especially the audio commentary - to them. I say watch the documentary, unless you like your stories with glossier endings.

Grade: ** ½ out of *****

2 out of 5 stars For Skating Fans Only.......2007-07-29

You have to be into skate boarding to enjoy this movie, and I have to confess, I'm not that into skate boarding. The only reason I even watched this movie is because the power was out at my house due to a thunder storm and I had available a battery powered DVD player and my sister-in-law has this on DVD. The story is decent, but it does have it's dull parts. If you are not into skateboards now, this film won't convince you to be. This is mainly for those who love the sport only.

The acting is good, but there isn't anything that really stands out, you see nothing more than what you woul don ESPN. But that's the point, the evolultion of how it became a mainstream sport is the entire role of the movie. The problem is that the characters are just one dimensional and it doesn't really matter what happens to the characters during the film. When it is was over, I thought, oh well. It didn't leave me breathless and I don't think I will ever see this movie again, nor do I want to. The highlight of the film was the short cameo of Tony Hawk, but even that was predictable, how can you have a movie about this topic and not have Tony Hawk somewhere in it?

Like I said, if you aren't into skateboards, you won't like the movie. But for skateboarding enthusiasts, you have probably found heaven in DVD form.

4 out of 5 stars Sidewalk Surfers Get A Walk in the Sun.......2007-06-05

Lords is a high energy film that drags the audience speeding along with it, tracing the early history of skateboarding in Venice, California.

We follow the fortunes of four roughly 15 to 17 year old boys and some of their girlfriends along with an alcoholic skateboard entrepreneur named Skip.

The Lords start their day by boarding off the roofs of the run-down rentals of their parents, in Venice. They hook a ride on a city transit bus until the driver spots them in the rear view and starts fish-tailing to shake them off.

Which turns out to be no problem. Our heroes drop off the bus jag, and segue into a line of stalled traffic, weaving in and out of the car line-up at high speed, by turns, dazzling and angering assorted drivers. Later, the most daring of the Four performs the crazy trick of boarding right thru a red light at a dangerous intersection without being hit.

Skip badgers and cajoles the kids constantly. He exploits them to promote the skateboards he is manufacturing at his Zephyr surfing gear and skateboard store. We are at the dawn of the Skateboard craze and Skip is bent on becoming a millionaire early. Only, he drinks quite a bit and shows signs of being a burnt-out 35 year old hippie.

That is the MO of one of the kid's Moms too, played by Rebecca De Mornay, who is so gone she uses expressions like "far out" and "man" and "can you dig it?" Even her kids treat her like a whacked out hippie. There is a heavy subtext of abused kids with parents who've failed to grow up.

At one point, De Mornay's current "old man" is moving out, and asks her reluctant son to help him, cautioning him to put a blanket over an enormous clear garbage bag of marijuana before carrying it to his car, and offering his surf board as a guilty pay-off for abandoning him, a scene both appalling and amusing to the audience.

Skip keeps running his hand-to-mouth manufacturing enterprise, employing other whacked hippies like himself, only working when they need enough jack to make a connection. Its hard to keep a production schedule when your 'groovy' friends refuse to show up for work. I've just realized, looking at the cast on IMDb, that the cool but whacked Skip is Australian Heartthrob Heath Ledger. This part is so good and Ledger so good in it, he deserves an Oscar. I didn't recognize him in his granny seventies blonde long hair. Its his best work on screen.

The Lords are perplexed and demoralized by the growing showbiz that is starting to overtake boarding. They gradually have given up on Skip, and begun to quarrel. But before falling completely apart, they define a new stunt that quickly makes them the crowned heads of sidewalk surfing.

Los Angeles Area pool-owners are ordered to drain their pools. The Lords decide to practice new stunts in empty pools, stealing into backyards the instant the owners go to work. The audience watches as the surfers perform outrageous tricks in the pools. An article appears in Skateboarding, another in People. Suddenly our boys are stars!

Only not all of them like it. An evil presence has intruded into their idyllic childhoods. One of the Lords steals a girl from a more waspish Lord, who looks like he is one of the Hansens singing group. There's a lot of long blond summer surfing hair on these guys. Only one of them has dark hair. One Lord refuses to accept any of the offers. He turns skinhead and starts hanging out with a gang. The Waspish one gets an endorsement deal and starts touring for a board company. Another of the Lords wants all the marbles, and signs with a Hollywood type who travels with an entourage of hangers-on and cheap bimbos in a longish limousine.

The hapless Skip has lost his guys and his business. We see him hand crafting a surfboard in the back of someone Else's surfing store. A clerk from the retail side comes in and asks if he'll have a customer's board ready by the next day. Skip says yeah, sure. When they leave, Skip relaxes, lights a cig, reaches for his hidden bottle, turns on the radio, acts out a lip-synched Maggie Mae that would put Rod Stewart out of business, then quietly returns to work. The whole 45 second turn is the best thing in the movie.

The wonderful ease of the Lords and the culture they created is spoiled by Success. The Lords stop seeing one another until the dark-haired kid develops a brain tumor and the others, finding success is not what its cracked up to be, gather at his father's dry pool for a rendezvous. An American Graffitti-style Epilogue tells us who the Lords become when they finally grow up.

When the lights go up I'm surprised to find two pairs of girls the only audience viewing the film with me. Voila!, why didn't I see it? This is a chick flick, even a skin movie for girls, since there is quite a bit of bared male surface in it. In the lobby, I notice two of the girls are dressed totally in black, wearing the wool knit hats cool black guys now affect year around, and sporting chains that run from the belt loops of black pants to enormous truckers wallets in their back pockets.

Lords reminds me a little of the stylish Fast and the Furious of a few years ago, but its ten times better. I'm still trying to figure out those two girls.

4 out of 5 stars Lords of Dogtown.......2007-06-02

I purchased this as a gift for my 15 year old son, who is an avid skateboarder. I found this PG-13 DVD only available at Amazon. There is an R rated version out however, I recommend the PG-13 for your teens.
I have not seen the movie myself.

4 out of 5 stars woodpushers go mainstream.......2007-01-25

This retrospective docu-drama ("inspired by a true story") was written by Stacy Peralta, one of the central characters in the film who also wrote the earlier genuine documentary called Dogtown and Z-Boys (2001). Set in Venice Beach in 1975, it follows the fortunes of three teenage surfers-turned-skateboarders who discovered the magic of attaching polyurethane wheels to the bottom of mini-surfboards: "They come from oil, and they grip. You can ride on walls." The film has very little plot or character development, a lot of drugs and alcohol, and the dialogue seldom moves beyond verbal towel-snapping, but there is enjoyable footage of these "wood-pushers" careening on car tops, weaving between traffic, carving empty swimming pools, hitching on the rear bumpers of buses, and competing in the first national skateboard competitions. This film hardly rises to the quality of what Riding Giants did for surfing, but it still provokes some interesting questions about how a small group of stoned beach bums who were greatly disenfranchised from mainstream society jump-started what is now a billion dollar industry complete with X-Games on ESPN.

Even if you've never witnessed the intensity of MotoGP motorcycle racing, Faster will take your breath away. It's a perfect primer for newcomers, offering a comprehensive survey of the fastest sport on two wheels, and it's guaranteed to satisfy hardcore fans with its detailed history, profiles of the top riders from the 2001-02 seasons, highlights of spectacular crashes and unforgettable races, and a veritable feast of the best MotoGP cinematography you're ever likely to see. From front-and-rearview cycle cameras to swooping overhead track coverage, filmmaker Mark Neale immerses the viewer in the MotoGP experience, enhancing the adrenaline-pumping visuals with expert interviews and commentary (and cool, low-key narration by globetrotting cycle-lover Ewan McGregor) that any sportswriter would consider authoritative.

Literally and figuratively, a lot of ground gets covered: From Kenny Roberts and the late Barry Sheene discussing their innovative knee-dragging styles and the origins of rear-wheel steering to the colorful rivalry of Max Biaggi and reigning champion Valentino Rossi (including Biaggi's infamous "Elbow Incident" at Suzuka in 2001), Faster never loses sight of the human element that makes this ultra-dangerous sport so fascinating. Track physician "Dr. Costa" is profiled (and offers some eloquently philosophical thoughts about MotoGP riders), along with innovative rider Garry McCoy (plagued by injuries); former champion Wayne Rainey (now paraplegic and active in kart-racing); young prodigy John Hopkins in his rookie season; and several other prominent figures in the world of MotoGP.

The bonus disc includes Faster & Faster, a sequel covering the 2003 and 2004 seasons, which saw the rise of the 500cc 4-stroke engine (and speeds in excess of 215 mph), Ducati's dominance and trend-setting removal of engine silencers (to boost power); Rossi's move to Yamaha; the fatal crash of Daijiro Kato; the victories of Sete Gibernau; and the rookie debuts of Neil Hodgson, Ruben Xaus, and Shane Byrne. Through it all, Faster and its sequel serve as the ultimate guide to MotoGP, certain to inspire future champions and armchair fans alike. --Jeff Shannon

This documentary is a classic, gives you in detail the change from the 500 two stroke to the 990 four stroke in 2002, very good, for people who is really into moto GP is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Even kept my girlfriend interested..........2007-03-27

My girlfriend hates my motorcycle and has absolutely no interest in motorsports. I started watching this one night at her place and before I knew it she and one of her roommates had gotten sucked into watching. It puts a very human perspective on the trials and tribulations of arguably one of the most challenging motorsports arenas. Watching Gary McCoy throttle slide a 200+ HP motorcycle out of a turn, some crazy spills and victory wheelies doesn't hurt...

With refreshing energy, Blue Crush is the kind of movie that girls and young women deserve to see more of. It's mostly for them (although nice tans and bikinis will attract the guys), and it rejuvenates the surf-movie tradition by showing real girls with real friendships, coping with absent parents, borderline poverty, rocky romance, and the challenge of raising a kid sister. For young Hawaiian Anne Marie (Kate Bosworth), those responsibilities are motivations to excel as a champion-class surfer... if she can overcome the fear of drowning, which she nearly did in a previous wipeout. Supportive friends (Girlfight's Michelle Rodriguez, and Sanoe Lake) help her reach the climactic competition on Oahu's infamous Bonzai Pipeline, and like Saturday Night Fever, this engaging film uplifts the working class without condescension, riding high toward the joy of achievement. Himself an amateur surfer, director John Stockwell (Crazy/Beautiful) captures the extreme thrill of the sport while respecting the forces of nature and human behavior. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fun, fresh and entertaining from the beginning to the very end..........2007-08-02

`Blue Crush' is a lot more than just a chick flick with half naked women. It's actually got a lot of heart and a halfway decent storyline. Of course the major draw to a film like this has to be the beautiful Hawaiian scenery, not to mention a few very nice tan lines, but like I mentioned, `Blue Crush' has a lot more to offer. Director John Stockwell has proved before with `Crazy/Beautiful' that he has a delicate and mature touch when approaching the all too often generic teen movie. He is able to infuse enough emotion and maturity into his films so that they come across new and fresh, inviting and, well, mature. He does the same here with `Blue Crush', giving us a film that is far from chick flick feeling and one that young and old, male and female can appreciate. It's funny when it needs to be funny, dramatic when it needs to be dramatic and soothing when it needs to be soothing.

The film tells the story of Anne, a young girl who dreams of becoming a professional surfer all the while taking care of her bratty kid sister Penny and working herself to the bone as a maid for one of the prestige hotels. She lives with her two best friends Eden and Lena who enjoy her love of surfing and are determined to help her train for the Pipe Masters tournament where she'll surf the Bonzai Pipeline. Anne has to face her own demons though, as a previous accident where she nearly drowned has crippled her in a way, mentally, making her incessant fear of drowning a major problem for her advancement. Another problem surfaces in the form of hunky football player Matt who shows up and takes root in Anne's heart.

All the actors do a great job with the material. Kate Bosworth is completely believable as Anne, and Mika Boorem is just as convincing as her sister Penny. Both Michelle Rodgriguez and Sanoe Lake are effective as Anne's friends, but Michelle has the larger of the two parts and is the more outspoken one. She plays Eden, the one who really wants to push Anne to succeed, and she does so with gusto. Besides, at the time she was really the only recognizable name and so she's instantly separated from the crowd. That's not to say she's the most entertaining of the bunch, just the most recognizable. Matthew Davis may have been a recognizable face but he hadn't really had a break out role yet (Michelle had `The Fast and the Furious'). Consider this his breakout. He does a great job as Matt, infusing enough charm to go with his rugged good looks to make you believe in Anne's apparent infatuation.

So from the beautiful ocean view to the compelling storyline and relatable, and likable, characters, `Blue Crush' succeeds on really all terms. It's definitely a film that can stand up to multiple viewings and one that will be enjoyed each and every time. So don't be turned off by the girly cover art or the fear of a simplistic and mind numbing prose, just pop in the DVD, sit back and enjoy the fact that not all chick flicks are avoidable, and some of them should be sought after.

Annemarie Chadwick (Kate Bosworth) and her two best friends, Eden (Michelle Rodriguez), Lena (Sanoe Lake), and Annemarie's little sister Penny (Mika Boorem) are extremely good at, and love to surf!! Actually Annemarie is so good at surfing that she gets invited to go and surf at the annual Pipe Masters Contest! But when it comes down to actually go and surf in the morning, everyone tends to have a tight schedule, because everyone wakes up at 6:30 just to go and surf! After surfing however, Annemarie rushes to get Penny to school, although she has to make sure Penny won't ditch. On top of all that, Annemarie, Eden and Lena all have to rush to their job, which are being hotel maids. However Annemarie gets fired from her job for publicly embarrassing a V.I.P guest, who happens to be a professional football player! Soon after being fired, Matt (Matthew Davis) the quarter back of the football team, comes to find Annemarie for surfing lessons. This starts a new romance between Annemarie and Matt. So now Annemarie struggles between a new romance, taking care of Penny (so hopefully Penny would stop smoking) and training for pipe masters. Annemarie struggles with training because she's too afraid that she will have another near drowning incident that happened three years before.

I thought that this movie was A-MAZING!! I loved the drama and the competition! If you ever watch this movie, I think that you might feel the same way! I think the director's use of music is really cool and good and has good taste, because some of the music is tropical, and some is sport-like. In my opinion, I think the movie setting was at one of the amazing places ever, HAWAII!!!!
So if you like the ocean, surfing and watching competitions, I think that you might want to watch this movie!!!

5 out of 5 stars Worth rebuying.......2007-04-11

I bought this movie about 4 years ago. I loved it so much. But with most movies they get damaged sooner or later. This is a movie worth rebuying over and over again, because you'll watch it over and over agian. It teaches you to never give up and hold close to your loved ones, no matter what.

3 out of 5 stars Not enough surfing, but I enjoyed the scenery........2006-11-10

Overall the movie was cool for me. The storyline was so-so and there wasn't enough surfing. I did enjoy the bit of good surfing they had though. The main reason I bought the movie was because it was filmed on Oahu (although there were parts that I think may have been filmed in Maui but passed off as Oahu). The special features had some good footage.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing.......2006-11-03

Now in a multi-year drought dominated by cheap horror flix, I recalled having seen Kate Bosworth and Michelle Rodriguez in a surfing movie. I went digging into the Amazon stacks and found it here. What I hadn't recalled was that this is a film centered around telling a more serious story about women in surfing and some of the more intricate aspects of beach culture in Hawaii. So, you are drawn inside the competitive mind where the challenge is to meet every expectation from making the rent, to having a life, to fighting the fears that would take away the chance to ride the next wave. It's fun and serious all at the same time. The film also contains some early work in face replacement and employs new approaches to filming the sport; so, it also makes an interesting study in visual effects and cinematography.

5 out of 5 stars Geat sound, Great Picture Quality, Great action........2006-12-26

Sometimes it's difficult to say who will be the winner in the war between HD-DVD and Blu-ray, but this title is one of those that makes you think "This is the standard to follow". Great sound (PCM), good transfer and the action expected from the "Vinny" movies. I love it.!!

2 out of 5 stars Sony lays a blue egg.......2006-06-28

I went to my local Best Buy who was featuring a demo of the High-def Blu-ray set-up, (a month ago I went for the HD-DVD demo but they were sold out on the players!). Anyway, I picked a time when I could mess-around with it, because they almost never have their monitors set well, and XXX was the DVD they had in the player. All I can say is after twenty minutes of farting around, this better not be the standard for Blu-ray qaulity, because it was pretty weak for a high-def image, it was far inferior to the THE LAST SAMURA HD-DVD they had running on HD-DVD. I'm kind of an "early adopter," but since there is a waiting list on the HD-DVD players, and I didn't like what I saw of Blu-ray, im going to sit on my hands a bit longer.

3 out of 5 stars Could Of Been A Little Less Grainy.......2006-06-27

good action movie.lots of color, and in some spots it shines.some of the backgrounds in some spots could of been a little more sharper and in some spots it had too much grain in it for it to be a 4 or 5 star movie.audio was top notch with great surround sound.

4 out of 5 stars All the fun and action no mush.......2006-06-24

This movie is like a study of Bond and Bourn "The Bourne Identity (TV Miniseries) (1988)", action movies. Toss in the innocent enthusiasm as in "If Looks Could Kill (1991)", There are gadgets women plots and sub plots. But this movie is mostly about action. This is not one of those thinking movies or really a talkie. It does hold your attention.
Xander Cage is an innocent dissident minding his own business. The business being stealing the governor's car and displaying reckless abandonment all in the cause of freedom. He is pressed into serves ala "Remo Williams - The Adventure Begins (1985)" in lieu of a prison sentence. It seems that the NSA needs someone of his reputation and abilities for short time. Will he comply and if so how short of a time? Will he quit when he is told to do so? And is there a love interest or just one of those "spy vs. spy" things?

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Aspen Extreme, better than average.......2007-04-06

Being that I am a Skier I guess I am more predisposed to liking this movie. But, that said, there is more here than just skiing. We get multiple stories woven into the thread of the Movie. It's one part buddy Movie, and one part guy gets girl, loses girl, gets girl again. Then add a Warren Miller element because the skiing in the Movie is good, really good. I would recommend this Movie as a very good Movie. I have heard some describe it as a great movie. I don't buy into that, but it is worth viewing and I have a hard time seeing how it will disappoint if you go into it just wanting to see a good movie.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best 80's ski films out there!.......2006-03-18

If you love to ski or snowboard (especially if you love the 80's) you must see this film. It pretty much (along with Hot Dog!) defines the 80's ski scene. Great stunts, good story line and awesome clothes and soundtrack make this the perfect film to enjoy watching after a long day on the slopes (drink in hand of course!).

4 out of 5 stars much better than you'd ever expect.......2006-01-04

I watched this movie thinking it would be some shallow t&a movie- but one with great ski sequences (which I why i thought it worth a look). How wrong I was!

Aspen Extreme is one of the rare films about male friendship that gets its right.

It portrays, as few films do, how a close male friend can simultaneously be your emotional anchor and greatest competitor. Dexter and TJ ( the main characters) have that complexity and paul gross and peter berg are great actors- you actually believe they are lifelong friends who need each other, even while they know they may be going in different directions as they get older.

The ski sequences are excellent and teri polo shows why she should have become a major star a decade ago (if there was any justice in the world)

the only negative- fiona hughes was too one dimensional and not on par with the three leads- you never once get the feeling this person is a successful businesswoman!

the plot twist towards the end is a little shocking- but moving and effective.

5 out of 5 stars Aspen Extreme....Life Unforgiving.......2005-06-05

"Dexter Rutecki lived a life that was short and funny and sad and hard and good. Most of the time it was good. It was good the day he died. The snow was deep and pure white. The sun high and cold. He was my best friend."

This film, while some will cry "Predictable", is entirely watchable and utterly enjoyable, almost to the point of sin. Granted, it's not "Chicago", "Phantom of the Opera" (2004 version), "Dances with Wolves", or "Titanic". However, it is certainly not cutting room floor crap either, and WAY better than "Hot Dog" because it doesn't rely on nudity to sell the story. Come to think of it, that's probably why the film wasn't a smash at the box office. YES! That's it! I'm sure of it! No nudity, that remains this film's fatal fault for the vast majority of America.

As for me, this film deals with far more human issues than simply throwing the odd breast on the screen to drawn in crowds. No, this film deals with two friends desire to attain success together (and not in that way).

This is an overall good film if one can manage to see the issues at hand. A man's climb to the top, the value of friendship, and the horror when your world comes crashing down. Then, yes, there is death, remorse, and dealing with all of those feelings in a way that leaves you among the living.

Predictable, yes, but if it wasn't it would either be "too real life" or "depressing". So what if it's predictable. That is why we see films. We watch to either be happy, or sad, or vindicated. Predictability is a good thing. If it wasn't, you'd take your date to what was supposed to be a "chick flick" and need a ride home at the end.

Bravo for predictability and Bravo for Aspen Extreme. It's a fine film and a guilty pleasure sure to be watched countless times over.

5 out of 5 stars Those are my clients....AZZZZHOLE.......2004-11-14

Lot's of skiing, women that were hot in the nineties, and a little bit of cheese combine to make this the best drama of all time for skiiers. This movie teaches essential survival skills like exactly how to handle a French jackass ski-instructor if he ever blames you for stealing his heli-ski clients. What you do is offer to split the tip with them, then when he says with his french accent, "I don wan to split de tip", just slam your ski locker in his face and come up with an extremly witty comment, then call him an azzhole as you walk away.....brilliant!!
Also, what do you do when you've been invited up to the mansion of a European lady with enormous teeth and you search the whole house for her, only to find her her in the indoor swimming pool wearing nothing but the fur under her arms? When she asks if you swim you answer, "like a fish" and whatever you do don't take your clothes off. This would take too much time. Just kick off your high-tops that aren't laced at the top and dive in. When you come to the surface of the water, the hair flip to get water out of your face must be perfect or she may not invite you to stay the night. PERFECT!!
I look at Aspen Extreme more as an instructional video for these situations. Thanks TJ & Dex, because of you I now live in my van and life is sweet.
I'm kidding about all of this but it still is my favorite ski flick for sure.

4 out of 5 stars Extreme Entertainment.......2007-07-29

Most would obviously compare "Extreme Prejudice" to the work of Sam Peckinpah. Anybody familiar with Walter Hill's output can detect his stamp on the finished product. It should also be noted that the original story idea came from the fertile libertarian mind of John Milius. Bottom line is the movie is a terrific stew of varied styles. The film may lack coherence at times but in the end it makes sense. It is eminently entertaining and engaging. Nick Nolte is the perfunctory star but this is really an ensemble effort. Hill has assembled a great rogues gallery of character actors and allows them to chew the scenery. Take note: Powers Booth(Hill's "Southern Comfort" and Milius' "Red Dawn"), Michael Ironside(TV's "V"), William Forsythe ("Raising Arizona", "Once Upon a Time in America"), Clancy Brown("Highlander" and "The Shawshank Redemption"), Rip Torn(too many films to mention) and not the least Tony "Tiny" Lister("The Fifth Element" and "Jackie Brown"). If you try to compare "Extreme Prejudice" to Peckinpah's work you're doing yourself a disservice. Just sit back and enjoy the fireworks.

3 out of 5 stars Full of great action scenes. Very poor picture quality........2007-06-22

Even on DVD, the movie looks as blurry as an old VHS tape. This movie was great in the 80's. Compared to today's standard, it's still above average. It's worth renting not buying.

5 out of 5 stars Extreme Prejudice.......2007-03-12

Nick Nolte and Power Boothe at their best, a powerful mindful and physical action movie leading to the core of emotions in 2 men's hearts, once friends, now bitter enemies, with the courage to face each other to define their destiny.

4 out of 5 stars MOVIE PURCHASE.......2007-01-09

I recently purchased a movie for my husband Extreme Predudice - This movie was made in the 80's. Sometimes it's difficult to find older movies and you have a very good selection. I would recommend your web site to
everyone I know. The shipping was extremely fast also.
Thank you for your help and stock of such a great movie - my husband has already watched it several times.

4 out of 5 stars Fun movie with cool premise.......2006-10-31

Cool premise! Military soldiers who are officially dead but assemble now and again for off-the-books secret operations.

Michael Ironside -- you can't take your eyes (or ears) off this guy when he's onscreen.

Nolte -- looking as trim as I've ever seen him. He's had a pretty up-and-down movie career, but this movie (along with "Lorenzo's Oil" and "The Thin Red Line") show he still has the chops.

Powers Boothe -- met him and director Walter Hill on the same night back in 1997. Got to talk to them both about this film for about 2 minutes. Cool for me! As for Powers' performance in this film -- it took me several viewings but now I see exactly how funny he is in this film! He is having fun with his Cash Bailey character, and it shows!!

Clancy Brown and William Forsythe -- two character actors who deserve better projects than they sometimes get.

Great score by Jerry Goldsmith. Opening score reminds me a bit of the tempo and urgency of his score for "Capricorn One" (1978), a film you MUST watch!!!

Vin Diesel is no James Bond, and he doesn't want to be. That's why XXX announced Diesel as the adrenalin-junkie Bond of the PlayStation generation, copying the Bond formula so shamelessly that this action-packed silliness would be a Bond movie if it starred Pierce Brosnan. Reuniting Diesel with his Fast and the Furious director Rob Cohen, XXX has an attitude (if not a brain) all its own, plucking Diesel's Xander Cage from his celebrity as an extreme sports renegade, recruited by a National Security Agency big shot (Samuel L. Jackson) to foil a nasty Czech villain (Marton Csokas) who's eager to depopulate Prague with remote-controlled biological weaponry. Toss in a sulky, sultry Russian agent (Asia Argento) and you've got extreme Bond-age for anyone who thinks tuxedos are passé. With a handful of eye-popping action sequences, XXX launched a movie franchise with a cool guy, another cool muscle car, and plenty of box-office sizzle. --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars MST3K Fans Rejoice -- Rifftrax is Here!.......2007-08-25

Vin Diesel, the Jean-Claude Van Damme of our time, stars as Xander Cage, an underground extreme sports star who apparently lost all his hair in a tragic skydiving accident. The NSA shanghais Xander to help them bust up a dangerous group of anarchists - and what an amazingly well-organized and thorough group of anarchists they are - by using his skills at pulling the most extremely off da heezy-fo-sheezy stunts ever, bi-atch. Samuel L. Jackson co-stars as Xander's cantankerous boss, made cantankerous, we can assume, by the fact that one side of his face is melted (the result, no doubt, of a mishap while he and his nutty friends were filming a Diet Coke and Mentos stunt for YouTube.)

The film is a perfect fit for Mike's RiffTrax style, what with his deep, deep roots in the underground sports community (once, when he was nine years old, he rode his bike right over a milk carton.)

4 out of 5 stars Decent movie, if you are into James Bond movies on hyperdrive...........2007-05-06

Like the title of my review suggests, this is your classic spy/action/thriller movie that is geared toward the young non-thinking audience.

Having said that, it is still a good movie overall. Now lett's dissect the movie and see how well it does on the essential components of a good spy/action flick.

1. ACTION SCENES: Very good, sometimes bordering into the surreal, like the one in the mountaines where XXX is snowboarding just 30 feet in front of an avalanche, and nothing happens to him but all the bad guys die because they are on slower snow mobiles.

2. CHICK: Yelena (the Russian FSB Agent that is undercover on the Anarchy99 mafia group) is very convencing as a russian agent, a little thin for my taste but quite decent in her "russian accent".

3. THE BAD GUYS: Credible group of ex-Russian Special Forces turned rogue after the Chechen War. The only part that did not fit is at the end, where the leader (who looks like a grunge russian singer from the 90s) turns psycho with his plan to destroy the world's major cities with the "Silent Night" poison gas.

4. THE GUY: XXX does a all right job as the adrenaline junkie that "does not fear death". I find him a little bit too "cliche" for my taste, but I did laugh sometimes with his one liners, like the one when Yelena confesses that she has been undercover with Anarchy99 for 2 years, and he retorts, "what were you waiting for......for them to die of old age".

5. THE BOSS: Standard Samuel Jackson acting of his government agent-supervisor character.

Go ahead, watch it... , decent but not great.
