This remastered, pan-and-scan 30th-anniversary edition of that kiddie-car caper is flawed but solid family fare. It retains a quaint charm while some of the songs--including the title tune--are quite hummable. A huge plus is Dick Van Dyke, who is extremely appealing as an eccentric inventor around the turn of the century. With nimble fingers and a unique way of looking at the world, he invents for his children a magic car that floats and flies. Or does he? The special effects are tame by today's standards, and the film is about 20 minutes too long--but its enthusiasm charms. The script was cowritten by Roald Dahl and based on the novel by Ian Fleming, best known for his James Bond adventures. --Rochelle O'Gorman

A wonderful movie with a delightful cast, great movie for kids to watch, and written by Ian Fleming, creator of James Bond.

5 out of 5 stars video.......2007-08-05

I gave this video to my two grandchildren ages 6 and 4 who travel with a video player in their vehicle. The report from my daughter is that they LOVE it!! As did I, and as did my daughter. This is a great item to entertain young children.

5 out of 5 stars UNABLE TO SEE DVD.......2007-06-27

THE ITEM ARRIVED IN GREAT CONDITION ALTHOUGH SLOW IN DELIVERY. CANNOT SEE THE FILM I ORDERED BECAUSE IT IS FOR REGION 1 AND I NEED FILMS FOR REGION 2. REALISED WHEN I PUT THE DVD ON. MY MISTAKE. RATED 5 STARS BECAUSE OF THE WAY IT WAS PACKED.

4 out of 5 stars Lotsa Fun.......2007-06-27

The music is great -- I enjoyed singing along. There are a lot of laughs and some clever surprises. Maybe a bit overdone in spots (emphasis on the fact that the kids weren't in school because they didn't want to be, and the "goblin" character with the silly nose), but all in all it kept my attention from beginning to end. I look forward to watching it again.

5 out of 5 stars Charming Musical with Humor and Fun........2007-06-25

Like "Mary Poppins". A charming story of adventure, imagination, and warmth. England, a 1920's race-car, charming children, their inventor father, a pretty woman, romance, an evil baron ruler of Vulgaria, a castle, a peasant village, songs and dancing, humor, and fun.

Good songs by the same Sherman brothers who wrote the songs of "Mary Poppins". Same dance choreographer from "Mary Poppins". Based on the novel by Ian Fleming, a real life secret agent in World War II. Movie script by Ronald Dahl, who wrote "Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory". Dick Van Dyke, and an all-star cast, though many unknowns. A very creative real-life inventor created the interesting inventions. A lot of bright, talented, people came together for this film. Too bad they can't make them like this anymore.

I bought this Special Edition for the second disc with the behind-the-scenes. An interesting look at the real life inventor behind the interesting inventions. I also enjoyed the interview with Dick Van Dyke.

I also bought the other full-screen edition, for the better, natural picture quality. It is not a big difference. Full-screen edition does not have the behind-the-scenes.

The producer of James Bond films gave the Disney team a free hand, but could not restrain himself from interjecting one risque' singing scene with a scantily clad baroness. However, the focus of the scene is humor and a good song. It is a great duet, with some great melodramatic acting. Though the scene would have been better with a modestly dressed baroness.
The rest of the film is a Disney style.

5 out of 5 stars The Pretender 2001 and Island of the Haunted.......2007-09-10

For any Pretender fan this is a must. I had no idea that these parts even exsited. Wow, it pulls all the info together and reveals so much about the center. The only bad side to watching Island of the Haunted is that you will likly never look at the seasons the same way when you rewatch them. Although it was worth it!!!!!! We loved it and enjoyed it 100%

4 out of 5 stars Pretender Fan.......2007-09-02

The casting was superb. The acting great. The Pretender 2001 didn't answer any questions, only asked more. Island of the Haunted was stupid.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-08-13

I have been a huge "Pretender" fan since the show first came out. (I have all the episodes on DVD) I couldn't wait to see / own the above. Unfortunately, I was sorely disappointed. If you're even considering buying this...even as a completion for your collection...save your money. It's not worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Pretender TV Movies.......2007-08-11

My husband and I enjoyed these movies, they did answer a lot of questions for us, but left a few hanging. We think possibly for future TV movies, hopefully. Anyway, I would highly recommend these movies, especially if you are a Pretender fan.

5 out of 5 stars Happy Fan!.......2007-08-09

I loved that they tied up some loose ends from the season finale. These are 2 great must see movies if you are a loyal Pretender fan!

4 out of 5 stars "Noirish Coolness" collides with Martial Arts brutality...SUCCESS!!.......2007-07-31

CITY OF VIOLENCE (aka: Jjakpae) is the 4th film by acclaimed action director Seung-Wan Ryoo (Arahan, Crying Fist). His films usually have that commercial appeal which is why they have enjoyed more success in most other countries in Asia than in South Korea itself. "City of Violence" is no exception, as with most martial arts films, it may have more "Style over substance" but no one can deny that it is very entertaining and quite intense that this film is worth a watch.

A Seoul cop named Taesu (Du-hong Jung, Fighter in the Wind, Arahan) is summoned back to his hometown to attend a funeral for an old high school buddy named Wang Jae. Once there, he runs into two more of his old group, Pilho(Beum-Su Lee) and Seok Hwan( Ryoo Seung-Wan). The four apparently forged their own lives; Taesu is a cop, Wang Jae gave up being a gang boss for his family and gave the reins to Pil-ho(who outgrew his goofy kid image), but Seok Hwan, still likes to start fisticuffs. Pil-ho assures Taesu that he owns the town and he will get to the bottom of Jae's murder. But Taesu, being the cop that he is, decides to do a little investigating along with Seok and they find Jae's killers have been brutally beaten to death, except for one. They find that Pil-ho was having an issue with Wang-Jae over a real state deal and it seemed that Pil-ho could have a hand in the murder.
Taesu and Seok must go through a gauntlet of Pil-ho's goons and a very tough QUARTET to bring Pil-ho to justice. The inevitable climactic showdown is a sight to behold.

The plot is unoriginal, and is quite simple. The screenplay gets a tad blurry with too many characters and with the flashbacks. It is also hampered with the fact that Pil-ho is revealed to be the culprit early on in the movie. It reminds me of the films; "Stand By Me" and the Korean Hit "Friend".

However, "City of Violence" succeeds in the action/fight scenes as well as its visual style that I forgave its shortcomings. The fight scenes (choreographed by Du-Hong, actor who played Taesu) are very well done and limits the use of wires/CGI. Bloody and hard-hitting, the fights are well-executed that the style has a touch of realism and doesn't lose its humanity. Camera work gives you an observational perspective, so you can see all the action. The atmosphere has that "noirish coolness" and coupled with very nifty scenes with the different "themed" gangs (looks like it was modeled after "The Warriors";ex. Cheerleaders, bikeriders, etc.) And the music at the climax is reminiscent of the Eastwood's "spaghetti westerns". All the formulas blend well to give us a very cool action movie.

I have the 2-disc region-3 edition from CJ entertainment. The presentation is exceptional which is why Korean dvds are expensive. I heard the Dragon Dynasty release will utilize the same transfer and may carry an English dubbed track. (I prefer to watch it in original Korean language)
PICTURE/AUDIO: 1.78 anamorphic widescreen. Near-flawless picture transfer. Vibrant colors, clean and sharp with strong solid blacks in the scenes where needed. 5.1 Dolby/DTS-ES in Korean, English subtitles are very good. If you're equipped, DTS track is the way to go because it is very powerful and crisp. You hear the impact of the punches more clearly.

IN CLOSING:
"City of Violence" may not be wholly original, but it is proof that a film doesn't need to be one to deliver an intense and entertaining experience. It is fast-paced and definitely delivers in the action/fight scenes. It is exactly what action-buffs have clamored for in a long time!
RECOMMENDED! For action fans. (4 stars)

As a screenwriter, Shane Black made millions of dollars from screenplays for the big-budget action movies Lethal Weapon and The Last Boy Scout, among others. With his directing debut Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, Black mocks and undercuts every cliche he once helped to invent. While fleeing from the cops, small time hood Harry Lockhart (Robert Downey Jr., Wonder Boys) stumbles into an acting audition--and does so well he gets taken to Hollywood, where--pursuing a girl he loved in high school (foxy Michelle Monaghan, North Country)--he gets caught up in twisty murder mystery. His only chance of getting out alive is a private detective named Gay Perry (Val Kilmer, Wonderland, The Doors), who sidelights as a consultant for movies. No plot turn goes untweaked by Black's clever, witty script, and Downey, Kilmer, and Monaghan clearly have a ball playing their screwball variations on action movie stereotypes. There's nothing profound about Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, but it brings back wicked mischief to a genre that all often takes itself too seriously. --Bret Fetzer

2 out of 5 stars Over the Hill Gang.......2007-08-16

It would be nice if every actor could age gracefully, like Sean Connery. But time is not always that kind and in this movie we have a collection of actors who just look awful compared to our memories of 30 years ago. If we had never seen them when they were young, it probably wouldn't bother us that this or that character looks burnt-out or bloated or bald. But since we do remember what they used to look like, it is hard to not be distracted from the story by thinking how awful they look now.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining.......2007-08-10

This is the kind of movie that would have been really hip about 15 years ago. You know what I'm talking about: the kind of modern post-Tarantino movie that first started appearing when we were in high school. Stuff shown slightly out of order, esoteric Seinfeild-like conversations at key dramatic points, and a main character who is aware that he is part of a movie and often addresses the camera or takes over the narration. Part "Pulp Fiction", part "Get Shorty", part "Fight Club."

Despite the fact that all the cool kids quit watching these kind of movies years ago, I still think they're great popcorn flicks. When I want to come home and relax, this is exactly the kind of move I look for. Simple enough that I can turn off most of my brain, and yet with enough twists, sharp editing, and funny voice over narration to cater to my ruined attention span. Perfect for just shoving in the popcorn

I wouldn't really recommend this movie, and yet the two hours I spent watching it were pleasant enough. It's not the best movie in its genre, and often it seems like it is trying too hard to be funny. Robert Downy Jr. as the main character/ narrator sometimes seems like he's doing his Woody Allen impression as an incredibly verbose narrator who runs every joke into the ground. Whether that's his fault, or just the script they gave him, I'm not sure, but often through the course of this movie I felt myself feeling embarrassed on behalf of Robert Downy Jr. But that's part of the fun of this movie as well; the perverse pleasure of seeing another human being make a fool of himself.

And some parts of the movie were actually kind of funny. I've definitely seen a lot worse in my time.

5 out of 5 stars Holy M'f^%^ing God.......2007-07-18

Funniest movie EVER!! Ok, crude at times. Little dark, little violent, but goofy as heck. Yeah. I'm not being coherent.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely loved this movie! Witty dialogue, wild action and a fun ride for movie-lovers!.......2007-06-18

Writer Shane Black has always crafted stories that may be a little too quirky and over-the-top for the mass audience, but I love his love for film and talent for dialogue which are on display in his directorial debut.

After a botched robbery, the RDJ character stumbles into a film audition, which leads to an LA oddessey. In the course of it, bullets, dead bodies and a severed finger start to pile up, as the case turns into a cheap detective novel - not unlike the kind the characters riff about in the movie.

I found "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" to be a real treat for cinema-philes who like smart characters and a bit of the "breaking the fourth wall" feel. Admittedly, the plot is a little loose, and really only exists to facilitate the action (Noires sometimes have plot issues - see The Big Sleep & Night Moves for examples - so many twists). The movie takes itself just seriously enough to be wild but coherent. The "LA flare" and the fact that the actors seem to be having so much fun made this a fun view for me. RDJ & Val Kilmer (who steals a few scenes of his own) are great together, and Michelle Monaghan was witty, fun and nice to look at. This is the kind of fun film experience I enjoy & miss in the garbage they churn out in Hollywood now - really dug it.

1 out of 5 stars We Didn't Like It!.......2007-06-05

Wow! If they had left the "F" word out of this movie, there wouldn't have been much dialog!!!! Could have been great, but our poor ears were cringing! Not even funny. What a disappointment. There are a lot better comedies out there.

Only those with ice water in their veins won't get misty-eyed watching this moving film about the friendship of two professional baseball players, one of whom--in every sense--is playing his last season. A pre-stardom Robert De Niro portrays a rather simple-minded rookie catcher who comes under the wing of a veteran pitcher (Michael Moriarty). When De Niro's character is diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease, Moriarty tries to help him get through one more season. Directed by John Hancock and based on the novel by Mark Harris (who also wrote the screenplay), the film builds on baseball's ability to foster its own lore of courage, nobility, loyalty, and--sadly--tragedy. Watching the youthful De Niro and Moriarty, with all that promise in their bones, adds to the overall romance of the film today. Also appearing are Vincent Gardenia and Danny Aiello. A perennial favorite for many. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Di Niro comes to bat.......2007-06-28

Bang the drum slowly is a great movie. Robert Di niro was unknown at the time, dominates the movie, the rest of the cast do a great job. Barbara Babcock is beautiful. This film is a sad film, except the Baseball part wich includes highlights from real games fans will remember the players. There are people who hate Baseball that love Bang the drum slowly.i agree with the comparison to Brians Song. i like Bang the Drum slowly better, because of Di Niro.

4 out of 5 stars More About Real Friendship Than Baseball.......2006-04-17

There was nothing hokey overly melodramatic about this story, and usually you get that with a sports story or about a good person dying. In this case, we have a combination of the two.
This is simply a mellow, sweet-natured human interest story well-acted by the two main stars: Michael Moriarity and Robert De Niro. Both are nice to watch, playing very easy-going non-offensive characters.
Moriarty plays a pitcher on a pennant-contending team who lovingly looks after his not-so-smart-but-dying teammate and friend (De Niro). By today's standards, it's slow-moving but I never got bored with it in several viewings. As nice a film as it is, there is one warning: a lot profanity by the manager (Vincent Gardenia) but it's not a kids' movie anyway.
I watched it years ago and then again recently when it came out on DVD. It's hard to get excited about it, yet it's a memorable story that I could never get out of my head. We all wish we had friends like the one Moriarty portrays here.

5 out of 5 stars One of my husband's all time favorites.......2006-03-09

Though I haven't seen it yet, my husband considers it a must-have classic.

5 out of 5 stars Bang The Drum Slowly.......2005-08-10

This sad, moving film showcases emerging brilliance of young DeNiro, with the underrated Moriarty also turning in a superb performance. Both baseball fans and devotees of great film alike should readily agree on this title.

5 out of 5 stars Unforgettable Movie!.......2004-06-19

This is the film that you will not forget. This is a story of two roommates attempting to get through one final season. Michael plays the role of a pitcher who is the roommate of Robert DeNiro who plays the role of the catcher.DeNiro is
diagnosed with Hodgkins disease. Michael as his roommate and
intimate friend helps DeNiro cope with Hodgkins as well as
make the season to the end. This is one of the more touching
films that I have watched. It would compare to "Brian's Song"
as far as being emotional.DeNiro,in this movie definitely showed
signs of great things to come for him. And,who could ever forget
the haunting song that accompanied the movie.A definite must see.

Written for the stage and coherently opened up for the screen by veteran director Herbert Ross, Play It Again, Sam is closer to a conventional comedy than Woody Allen's more self-contained films, but his smart script and archetypal hero-nebbish achieve a special charm aimed squarely at movie buffs. Allen is Allan Felix, a film critic on the rebound after his wife's desertion trying to brave the choppy waters of born-again bachelorhood and struggling to reconcile his celluloid obsessions with the hazards of real-world dating. His apartment is a shrine to Humphrey Bogart, and it's none other than Bogey himself who materializes at strategic moments to counsel Allan on romantic strategy. He gets more corporeal aid from his married friends, Linda (Diane Keaton) and Dick (Tony Roberts), who try to orchestrate prospective matches and reassure him when those chemistry experiments explode. When Allan finds himself falling in love with Linda, the dissonance between fantasy and reality proves both funny and poignant--a precursor to the deeper emotionalism missing from the star's earlier directorial efforts that was soon to inform Allen's most affecting '70s comedies. It's also the start of his onscreen relationship with Keaton, further underscoring Allen's evolution toward a more satisfying contemplation of the friction between head and heart. --Sam Sutherland

If you are not sure if you will like a "Woody Allen" movie, I suggest you start with this one. It is one of his more straight forward films and it is funny! I am a fan,but I must admit that I like his earlier films (Play it again Sam,Banana's,Take the Money and Run,Sleeper,Manhattan,Annie Hall). There are some really funny scenes in this one. The scene where he is introduced to a blind date at his apartment is hilarious! The DVD transfer looks good, but the treatment could be better.

5 out of 5 stars A Cowardly Nebbish Would Never Fall For His Best Friend's Wife. Or Woody?.......2007-07-30

Woody Allen plays film magazine writer Allan Felix, a man who, since his wife left him, has been an amalgam of devastation and cowardice. Allan is a disheveled mess. An uber-schlemiel.

Helping him get back into the dating world is his apparition of Humphrey Bogart (Jerry Lacy). He's Allan's hidden, tough-guy interior longing to come out, but Allan's too scared to let him take the leap. Allan's no Bogart, but will he be by the end of the movie?

Besides Bob Hope, who Woody admittedly lifted his "faux nervous guy" from, PLAY IT AGAIN, SAM marks one of the first appearances of Hero Neuroticus. There doesn't seem to be a wasted sweat bead, grunt, or record toss (more on this later). It's also the first pairing of Woody and the magnificent Diane Keaton.

SAM is also a great movie to watch if you've never seen a Woody Allen movie, or if you have and aren't impressed. This is because it was made before Woody wanted to make serious movies. This was one of his "early funny ones." It's a nice mixture of smart jokes and sight gags, one such being when he is at a loss for words after his date asked him about his ex-wife. He is holding a record, and when he casually tosses his arms up to nervously shrug off the question, the record goes sailing out of its jacket and crashes off screen. Perhaps one of the funniest sight gags I've ever seen. I've heard secondhand that Woody didn't tell the crew he was going to do that, so when they broke up laughing, they ruined the shot.

PLAY IT AGAIN, SAM, adapted by Woody Allen from his Broadway play, was directed by Herbert Ross and photographed by Owen Roizman, both of whom have laundry lists of commercial successes. It's an adeptly structured romantic comedy, for love eventually does find Allan Felix in the end. And like Bogey, he handles it with class. Here's looking at you, Woody.

4 out of 5 stars PLAY IT AGAIN, INDEED! .......2007-07-29

Here is another early Woody Allen social commentary heavily dependent on his long time love affair with film noir and its characters, in this case the legendary tough guy/yromantic figure Humphrey Bogart. Now this may be a film that seems dated compared to today's new sensibilities around the `woman' question. It is not clear that it would be politically correct to ask advice of the legendary Bogart on the woman question today. Bogie, except in the case of Lauren Bacall, was rough on his lady friends (or for the politically incorrect `dames'). But not to worry Woody is the same old bungling ball of nerves and anxieties as he is in most of his films. The real surprise here is that such a cerebral actor/ comedian/ director uses so many sight gags in his repertoire. Does the woman question get resolved here for poor Woody? Well watch the film and find out. You will be glad you did.

4 out of 5 stars Laugh Out Loud Funny.......2007-07-02

Play It Again, Sam, written by and starring Woody Allen is just plain hilarious. Full of sight gags and tremendous one-liners, this is Woody at his "slapstick" funniest. Diane Keaton is great as Woody's friend and advisor. They have an excellent chemistry. The movie takes place in San Francisco, and is full of excellent imagery. Fun and fast-paced, this is a 4 star Woody Allen film well-worth the minor time investment (85 minutes).

5 out of 5 stars Top 5 Woody Allen.......2007-04-16

It has almost been forgotten that this film was not directed by Woody Allen - but this makes no difference it is still one of his greatest films.
We start the film with Allan Felix (Allen) watching Casablanca in the Cinema and feebly impersonating Bogart as he leaves the Cinema. The film proceeds with an imaginary Bogart advising Allan on how to deal with Women. Allan as you would expect is pretty hopeless!
This film is consistently funny with the blind date scene being one of the greatest comedy scenes ever filmed.
The script (based on Woody Allens own stage play) is full of great dialog, as you would expect.
Diane Keaton is wonderful in her role, and Tony Roberts is very funny in his supporting role as the business man who leaves a telephone number so he can be contacted everywhere he goes.
"I'll be at 362-9296 for a while; then I'll be at 648-0024 for about fifteen minutes; then I'll be at 752-0420; and then I'll be home, at 621-4598"
Remember this film was made more than a decade before mobile phones even existed in brick form.
The film finishes with a great recreation of the end of Casablanca.
If you don't like Woody Allen then you probably won't like this. However, if you have any appreciation of Woody and haven't seen this, you should buy this DVD now.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A mixed bag..........2007-08-19

First, the positives: the performances across these four discs are generally strong, the concerts well-filmed, and the breadth of (musical) material presented is admirable. While age seems to have finally begun to catch up with Keith Richards, whose once-impeccable rhythm sense is not quite as razor-sharp as it once was, compensation is at hand in the form of Ronnie Wood, whose new-found sobriety has lent a degree of focus and precision to his playing which raises his performances here several notches above anything to be found on live recordings from the Stones' previous few decades of touring. Aided and abetted by an array of professional but rarely overly-slick backing musicians, the band themselves, as presented here, still excel at what they do best - entertain on a huge scale. They're not breaking any new ground here, and the lack of emphasis on material from their latest, surprisingly-strong studio album A BIGGER BANG is disappointing (for the first time in years, they're touring off the back of a genuinely decent record, but the setlists are still overwhelmingly filled with tried-and-tested old hits, with a bare handful of numbers from A BIGGER BANG scattered across the four discs. A missed opportunity), but they still do what they do about as well as anyone could reasonably expect.

Specific musical highlights will differ from viewer to viewer - I was particularly taken with a rocking take on 'Bitch' taken from the band's first-ever show in mainland China, and the deep blues of 'Back of My Hand' hidden in the otherwise largely-skippable 'making-of' documentary on the fourth disc is compelling. The BIGGER BANG songs shine across the board, in fact - 'Streets Of Love', is performed in Austin, Texas, with a power and intensity which easily surpasses the album version, and 'Rough Justice', while melodically-unremarkable, joins VOODOO LOUNGE's 'You Got Me Rocking' as a deservedly-popular late-period addition to the Stones' live repertoire. A short featurette on the fourth disc also includes snippets of a fascinating, unforgivably-incomplete swing arrangement of 'Miss You', as performed by Charlie Watts' jazz big-band side-project, which I'd love to hear in its entirety.

Presentation-wise, these discs are good but not perfect - the sound mix is strong throughout, and while the presentation is laughably self-important (the lengthy introduction clip which precedes each disc, with the camera spiralling through space to the strains of various Stones hits, goes on a good deal longer than most viewers will be willing to tolerate without reaching for the `skip' button), and the menu screens are less user-friendly than I would have liked, these are relatively minor criticisms for all but the most technologically-minded consumer. The most important thing is the music, and the performances are generally better-filmed than was the case on the similar FOUR FLICKS set, released only a few short years ago.

This brings me, however, to the main criticism I'd make of this set, however: redundancy. Coming so close on the heels of FOUR FLICKS, and packaged in such a similar fashion, comparisons are inevitable, and in almost all regards, THE BIGGEST BANG comes off second-best. In terms of song selection there are, of course, a good number of welcome rarities scattered among the predictable roll-call of over-played classics, with a solid, if slightly stilted, runthrough of the never-before-performed STICKY FINGERS track 'Sway' in place of FOUR FLICKS' similarly-hyped take on 'Can't You Hear Me Knocking', but a non-dedicated fan could be forgiven for overlooking these relatively minor distinctions in favour of the rather more obvious reliance on familiar old warhorses like `Satisfaction', `Jumpin' Jack Flash', `Honky Tonk Women' and so on, all of which are featured multiple times across both this and FOUR FLICKS. As a celebration of the band's fortieth anniversary, FOUR FLICKS arguably had a stronger justification for this apparent excess - by contrast, the sheer volume of material presented on THE BIGGEST BANG seems over-the-top, a triumph of quantity over quality. It may seem churlish to complain that we're being given too much material for our money, but in all honesty, this set achieves very little which couldn't have been communicated rather more effectively via a more stripped-down two-disc set, centred on the Rio de Janeiro show which is the better of the two full concerts presented here. Where the three concerts which formed the bulk of FOUR FLICKS showcased the Stones in a variety of different-sized venues, with a varied tone to their respective atmospheres and setlists, the two concerts found on THE BIGGEST BANG are both from large-scale outdoor shows, with the result that they look and sound rather too similar to justify the substantial overlap in material - there's also far too little representation among the extras of the intimate, sweaty small-stage performances which were the real highlight of FOUR FLICKS, in the form of the Paris club show which filled the third disc of that set. I suspect that fans who want to witness the band at their musical best, trading riffs and licks face-to-face on a tiny stage, would be best-advised to wait for Martin Scorsese's upcoming concert film SHINE A LIGHT, recorded during the same tour at a far smaller venue than those primarily-featured on THE BIGGEST BANG.

Sure, this set is a bargain for die-hard Stones fans, and serves as a fine souvenir for anyone who caught the band on their latest mega-tour, but the non-converted will probably find little to interest them here once they've played the two main concert discs a few times.

5 out of 5 stars Biggest Bang for your buck !.......2007-08-14

Biggest Bang is essential viewing as a document of the Rolling Stones 2005/2006 world tour. It is a 4 x DVD set, filmed in Texas, South America (Brazil & Argentina) & Far East (Japan & China), I think BEFORE the coconut tree! Speaking of which, Keith Richards is such a character & raconteur, that in one segue in the Far East section of the DVD, Keith says of Shanghai "I hear they have a Chinatown there!" Boom. Boom.

There are plenty of extras/bonus features on each DVD. For instance, DVD 1 has sound-check or rehearsal footage of the Stones playing Muddy Waters' I Can't be Satisfied with Mick Jagger playing along on slide guitar! DVD 4 in the set is given over to a documentary of the whole tour including the Superbowl.

I think the centrepiece of this DVD set is probably the free Brazil concert on Rio's Copacabana beach. It's an amazing scene & atmosphere. The Stones seemed genuinely excited about this concert and it was reflected in their performance. It was captured well on film and you can almost feel the heat of that Rio night.

Biggest Bang has songs featured from their most recent CD release Bigger Bang, as would be expected. But Biggest Bang is overwhelmingly more versions of the same old songs. Take that as a given, that's what the Stones do; and I'm glad they still do. But there are still some interesting song variations to their set. The highlight for me, was the inclusion of Sway from (from Sticky Fingers). I have never heard or seen that song performed live before. It was from their greatest era and whilst I have never thought Ronnie Wood (God love him!) was at the level of the great Mick Taylor on guitar, Ronnie does a very good job on Sway. In fact I think Ronnie generally plays the best I've seen of him in recent years. I believe he was on the wagon for this tour, much to Keef's chagrin. Other highlights for me were the included versions of Bitch and Gimme Shelter from Shanghai, complete with Mick's intro in mandarin, and the humorous segue about censorship in China preventing the Stones from performing certain songs. I also liked their performance of the country music song Bob Wills Is Still The King from Texas (of course!).

DVD packaging & included booklet with Biggest Bang seems cheaper than the Four Flicks DVD set from the 2002/2003 tour, as if the whole project was outsourced & cut down to a price. But this is a minor criticism, and I suppose fair enough, because the more deluxe feeling Four Flicks was very expensive when it first came out, and Biggest Bang isn't bad value for 4 x DVDs. Sound & vision are excellent.

I didn't catch the Stones shows on the 2005/2006 tour and didn't know, until I watched this DVD, what that tour looked like, or sounded like. I think I'd have to say the 2005/2006 tour, notwithstanding some great highlights on Biggest Bang, wasn't as good, for some intangible reason, as the 2002/2003 world tour. But I am not necessarily saying Four Flicks is better than Biggest Bang. They are both different and good in their own ways and Biggest Bang is nevertheless an excellent Rolling Stones DVD set in its own right.

Hey, it's The Stones. I can't give less than 5 stars.

Postscript: If you REALLY wanted to see the Stones at their peak, find a bootleg DVD of Ladies & Gentlemen, The Rolling Stones, from their 1972 American tour. It was a theatrical release in 1974, but I have never seen it officially released on DVD. I used to have the official release VHS, but now I've got to settle for a bootleg DVD. Hey guys, let's have the official release of it. Please!

5 out of 5 stars Kaboom!.......2007-07-23

This 4 DVD set packs a wallop. Each DVD could easily stand on its own, but together you get some of the best live Stones ever. The extras and production value are great. The song selection vary from DVD to DVD so as not to be redundant. The Rio concert with over a million in attendance is something to be seen and is captured in here in all its glory, but still hard to believe.

I hope the Stones keep Rolling for years to come!

In reducing the rules of romance to a 10-day plan for repairing a breakup, Two Can Play That Game tickles a few funny bones while "keepin' it real" about heartbreak and human behavior. Our hostess through this marathon of head games is 28-year-old Shanté (Vivica A. Fox--emphasis on the fox), who speaks to the camera so much that critic Roger Ebert nicknamed this movie "Waiting to Inhale." In a film packed with positive stereotypes (no crack-smoking gangstas here, thank you), she's a successful marketing executive, and her straying boyfriend is a high-profile attorney (Morris Chestnut). Their turbulent romance survives Shanté's 10-day power play, but not all viewers will be so lucky, since this movie is alternately charming and aggravating, and there's precious little romance while the lovers are plotting their moves. Still, it's a safe bet that many people will appreciate this movie's endearing lesson--namely, that sincere groveling can save you lots of time and heartache. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2007-06-27

Yes, it's campy and Vivica Fox's weaves are distracting. But overall, whenever I catch this film, I still laugh. Anthony Anderson was truely halarious and honestly I haven't seen him anything quite as funny since. Overall, this is a fun movie about the games men and women place. Highly recommended.

Great Movie! I am glad to have it as part of my collection.

4 out of 5 stars Morris needs lessons from Anthony?... As If!!.......2007-04-29

I loved this movie. It reminded me alot of relationships I'd had in high school, lol. The only thing that really aggravated me about the film is sexy fine man Morris Chestnut seeking and needing advice from dumpy funny jokeman Anthony Anderson. I mean, come on now! If that's the case the roles should have been reversed with Morris giving advice to Anthony, that would have been more believable. The other thing that irritated me is watching Monique in yet another role where she is desperately seeking laughs as the fat woman hanging with skinny B?%ches as she likes to call them on stage and I'm sure off. Other than that this movie was great. Vivica never fails to please, Morris is as fine as ever, Tamala Jones is especially funny and gorgeous. Thumbs up!

4 out of 5 stars Two Can Play That Game.......2007-03-18

This seller was very pleasent to work with. The products came in the shape that was listed, but they did show up a bit later than expected.

5 out of 5 stars Funny, Sexy - Great Movie.......2007-01-29

I always pull out this movie knowing I am going to laugh and have a good time. It's about an attractive successful black woman who thinks she can control her man with "Rules". It's a really fun movie, that you probably shouldn't watch with your man because he will learn all of your tricks. Vivica and Morris do an excellent job showcasing their talent and Anthony is just as funny as ever. They just let Anthony be himself in this film and he let it all out. Great movie! Definitely worth buying and watching.

This 1968 kiddie-car caper is flawed but solid family fare.

The Work of Director Michel Gondry invites the lucky viewer into a wonderland of childlike imagination. Before the Versailles-born Gondry turned his creative ingenuity to feature films (beginning with the underrated Human Nature and the 2004 Jim Carrey comedy Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), these 27 music videos and assorted "stories and things" formed a legacy of supreme cleverness, suggesting a creative lineage from the pioneering film magic of Georges Méliès to the groundbreaking experimental films of Norman McLaren. It's perfectly fitting that the accompanying 75-minute documentary is titled "I've Been 12 Forever," because Gondry (b. 1964) never lost the sense of wonder and inventiveness that children display when their minds are allowed to flourish in a creative environment. No wonder he's best known for his dazzling collaborations with Icelandic pop star Björk, resulting in music videos (seven included here) that redefined the magical potential of the medium. Each, in its own way, is a masterpiece of the fantastic.

What's also remarkable about Gondry's work is its technical progression, from the homemade crudeness of his earliest videos for the French band Oui Oui, to the technical wizardry of Kylie Minogue's "Come Into My World," in which the Australian pop star is seamlessly multiplied as she strolls around a busy Parisian intersection; like many of Gondry's videos, it's a stunning "how-did-they-do-that?" work of art, reminiscent of Zbigniew Rybcynski's prize-winning 1982 short "Tango." From the hilarious dreamworld of the Foo Fighters' most popular video "Everlong" to the painstaking pixilation of Gondry's videos for the White Stripes (one made entirely of animated Lego blocks), this DVD is packed with Gondry's tireless pursuit of perfection; he'll do whatever's necessary, no matter how simple or complex, to achieve perfect harmony between song, artist, and visual concept. All the while, he's drawing from a seemingly endless well of inspiration, as evident in the delightful 52-page booklet of stories, drawings, photos, and interviews that chronicle the eternal sunshine of a brilliant mind. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2007-06-27

This is probably my 2nd favorite dvd like this, really liked all the videos, except for some of the bjorn ones which were obviously pretty weird. Forgot the name of the singer/song, but the one where it's just beats and the landscape shows stuff following the beat pattern is really cool. Mark Romanek's dvd is the only one I like better, if you're into these types of dvds I'd strongly suggest getting that one.

5 out of 5 stars come into his world........2007-02-12

I have a pretty extensive dvd collection and this one is at the top of my list. Michel Gondry is my favorite director and the videos and short films on this disc are worth seeing. Highlights: "Around the World" by Daft Punk is funky and futuristic, "Star Guitar" by the Chemical Brothers is mesmorizing and in sync, "Everlong" by the Foo Fighters and "Let Forever Be" by the Chemical Brothers are classics that you'll never forget. "La Lettre" is my favorite of the short films featured on this dvd about a young boy who is in love with one of his childhood friends and must deliver her a letter before she leaves on vacation. "One Day" features David Cross, dressed as a piece of crap, and Gondry on a hilarious adventure through NYC. I would recommend this dvd to anybody who enjoys great music, great cinematography, and most of all a great imagination.

3 out of 5 stars Gondry.......2006-11-05

This DVD is pretty sweet. There is a good amount of interesting, entertaining material and I enjoy watching it.

4 out of 5 stars awesome videos.......2006-08-08

this is one amazing director! one of the most visually original around today. the videos in this collection are amazing on the first disk but the second shows the EARLY work of the director that looks and sounds like a junior high stopmotion project. no offense to the director, everyone has to start somewhere, right!?
this is an excellent collection of great videos whether you are a fan of the artists or not.

5 out of 5 stars Gondry never fails to amaze.......2006-03-23

This collection of Director Michel Gondry's work is nothing short of amazing. It encompasses all of his career, and has just about everything he ever directed, short of including his movie "Eternal Sunshine". You'll find some of the best 90s pop songs accompanied by bizarrely upbeat videos. Well worth the money, it will be watched again and again. Something I'll never loan out...
