"Give me what I want and I'll go away," demands the black-eyed, stocking-capped stranger Linoge (Colm Feore), who appears in a quiet island community on the verge of the worst storm in decades and brutally bludgeons an old lady to death. Tim Daly, the town sheriff and voice of reason and moral strength, locks up the quiet madman, but the deaths pile up as Linoge acts them out from his cell like a murderous mime pulling psychic strings. Stephen King, whose original teleplay is his best work for the screen since The Stand, transforms the sleepy burg into a Peyton Place of guilty secrets and criminal activity ripped from under a blanket of small town normality while the white-out of the snowstorm completely cuts them off from civilization. Director Craig R. Baxley nicely maintains an icy tension while the waiting game goes on, perhaps a little too long, before Linoge finally reveals "what he wants" and the drama turns into a struggle for man's soul in miniature. The more ambitious special effects and set pieces sometimes disappoint but are more than made up for in King's knack for turning the mundane into the macabre (the children's song "I'm a Little Teapot" has never sounded more sinister) and a few brilliantly realized sequences, the best of which occurs when townspeople are literally yanked out of existence while watching the storm. Storm of the Century is one of the most successful translations of King's brand of horror to the screen. --Sean Axmaker

The product I had ordered came to me in a very good packaged condition and it was within the estimated time of arrival. The product is of high quality and performace. It is really professional!! Keep the good show.. I will defenitely recommend to my friends.. Cheers to Amazon!!

2 out of 5 stars Like 99% of Stephen Kings movies-a waste of time!.......2007-07-18

The first half of this movie is fairly interesting, and does keep you wondering what is going on. But at the end as with most of Mr. King;s movies it all falls apart, and leaves you angry that you invested so much time in watching this garbage. Master of Horror? I think not. This movie just didn't make much sense to me.

5 out of 5 stars The Choice Is Ours.......2007-07-02

Only one word can describe this film, DEEP!! This is an extremely spiritual movie. I enjoyed every minute. This movie proves that we all ultimately choose our path in this life. Outcomes and all. It teaches us about free will and the power that we have inside to beat any and all demons. Too many of us run to church on Sunday, screamin' HALLELUJAH!! and are living the most trifling lives. The people on this island were full of herendous sins. They had verbal faith, but not spiritual faith on a soul level. When the time came for their faith to take action and pull together as a unit in God's name, they all cowered. All except one, but that one could not do it alone. Anything in this world, whether good or bad, we must first consent to the allowance of anything to happen to us and/or through us. Nothing happens without God's permission. If we are part of THE ONE TRUE SOURCE, that means that God lives within us and we in God. We give the okay for things to happen. This is why free will is always a daily challenge. The knowledge of Spirit is not enough. Our belief(s) is what will sustain and ultimately save us. The Demon in this movie knew this. He knew these folks were simple/take the Bible literally morons and that their "faith" was none. For those whom have not seen this movie, I will not spoil the ending, but remember this: A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. And even the strongest link cannot hold the entire chain together. Nothing is stronger than the power of the Almighty. Whatever that means to each of us. Ponder upon the many spiritual lessons in this movie. Thank you Stephen King.

1 out of 5 stars One of the most disappointing and dragging movies.......2007-06-26

The first 30 minutes aroused my curiosity. After that it moved at such a slow pace that I felt asleep at least twice. I also lost my interest. There's no suspense or horror in the remaining part.

Pet Sematary and Desperation are much more suspenseful and scarier.

3 out of 5 stars Just didn't draw me in, predictable even for Steven King, and way to long. .......2007-05-31

The biggest problem I had with this movie is that it was so long. I knew exactly how it was going to within the first hour, why did it go on for almost 3 more. And, its the same King theme, a Demon/devil guy comes to town, plays people off of eachother, and leaves, usually changing the town forever from a Good/wholesome place to something different, something evil (eg Needful things, the Stand, deperation,). In this case, It came for "what it wants". Come on, you can't tell me you didn't figure out it was the Sherrifs kid...lets mark this character with AN ANGEL'S SADDLE on his nose, and a Demon comes to town...Yeah, tell me who he's after. Sorry Mr. King, I know you wrote this one for TV specifically, then came out with the script as a story, but this is not a high point. But, I do like many of his books, and even some of his more recent short story collections. But this one just dind't work for me. Worth a viewing, but no huge loss if you don't.

Clever and original, this horror film directed by Steve Miner (Forever Young) stars Julian Sands as a 17th century warlock who escapes the gallows and is transported--along with the witch hunter who brought him to trial (Richard E. Grant)--300 years into the future. Running loose in contemporary Los Angeles, Sands's supernatural monster sets about reuniting the scattered portions of a Devil's Book that will reveal the true name of God and thus destroy mankind. In a great twist, the last bit of the book is in a very interesting place: the grave of Grant's character, who has enlisted the aid of a woman (Lori Singer) in a hurried effort to stop imminent disaster. Genuinely involving, Warlock is aided immeasurably by sharp performances from the equally eccentric Grant (Withnail and I) and Sands (Naked Lunch). Miner invents his way through a kind of simultaneously new and old horror tale, and the results are taut, fun, and surprising. The DVD release features Spanish and French subtitles, cast and crew information, and 2.0 Dolby surround sound. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars A classic is a classic! and this is CLASSic.......2007-02-19

when you have Ricahrd E. Grant as the Good Guy Hunting Julian Sands (as of course the Warlock) to which he plays the part as if it was Made For Him. I am Not Kidding i believed he belonged in all of the warlock movies but sadly someone in casting always has a "better idea" NOT! anyway this flic is about grant as the hunter after the warlock for a multitude of reasons including the loss of his sweet marion. well the hunter (grant) meets a modern day gal (think 80"s skate chick) and wham perfect mix for horror comedy and even some really interesting special effects such as the 3 parts of the Grand Grimoire that all Warlocks Covet for it is the book that can render the weilder almost unkillable and able to undo creation itself! so watch this (lil slow in the early parts- Not the beginning) action packed thriller and enjoy it like you would have in the times when you believed in magic and go for another magical ride mainly for adults. no nudity thankfully little gore and quite a bit of "evil" in the movie. id rate it tv- 13 by todays standings. its ok to say satan in church but not movies? cmon n lighten up hehe.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad for a low budget , not scary though.......2006-10-11

Julian Sands was good as the warlock who travels through time looking for his book of evil. The warlock hunter was sincere and true to his character. This movie could have been better with more CGI. But as it stands it was ok. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars AN ENTERTAINING AND VERY FUN WITCHCRAFT FILM.......2006-10-05

This film, released in 1991, is recommended for those who like fun and entertaining witchcraft films. The film stars a powerful warlock (Julian Sands) who is about to be executed by witchhunters. However, he escapes with the help of Satan, and is thrust into modern-day Los Angeles. What ensues is a fun and entertaining film, in which the witchhunter (Richard E. Grant) goes in pursuit of the warlock. He must prevent the warlock from seeking a special book that has been divided up, and scattered across the United States.

The warlock is seeking the holy bible of Satanic holy bibles. When the book is found, then speaking God's name will cause all of God's creation to be undone. The warlock encounters (Lori Singer) and puts a spell on her in which she ages rapidly. In turn, she helps the witchhunter (Grant) to locate the warlock. The film does have cheesy special effects, but damn good cheesy effects. I found the film fun and entertaining. With Ricahrd E. Grant as the witchhunter, and Julian Sands portraying the warlock, this makes for an entertaining film. Recommend. You will enjoy it.

1 out of 5 stars not worth the time!!!!.......2006-06-27

this movie is such a bore that i sold it 2 hours after i watched it. not even lori singer was able to help this sad and unscary movie. a waste of time and money.

4 out of 5 stars A Classic in its Genre .......2006-03-19

Julian Sands was a perfect choice for this role and he was even better in Warlock: the Armageddon. Surprising as I find him wooden and awful in all his other roles, but he seems to suit this character well. Richard E Grant's great acting ability shine in the movie compared to the mediocre performances around him. The story is entertaining and a classic for this genre. Some scenes especially some of the special effects have dated badly and the costume and hair choices for Lori Singer are appalling. Having said that, this is definetly a must have for any fans of 'supernatural horror' genre.

3 out of 5 stars Hell, you say?.......2007-08-11

I bought the DVD when I discovered that it had been filmed at Hell, Michigan. My parents used to own a cottage there and I thought it would be a hoot to see the area again in a movie. Upon seeing the movie I learned that very little exterior viewing was provided. In fact, about 99% is filmed in or around a house, which could have been located anywhere. Still, for it's era it isn't a bad film and comes close be being a candidate for cult classic. It contains some pretty amazing special affects for which they make you...wait....

4 out of 5 stars great instant classic.......2007-03-30

this is a movie from my childhood. not a great movie for little kids but i fell in love instantly. When i bought the dvd after not seeing it in years, the story line was still good but the make-up and effects weren't as good but hey it was a movie made in the '80s so for the time they did pretty good. my kids when they watched it these days thought it was funny but a little scary.
But they are used all the high tech movies.

5 out of 5 stars 80's was the best for movies.......2007-01-15

This is at least on the top 10 greatest horror movies in the 80's. I was lucky enouf to have bought it when it was $4.00 not too long ago on Amazon Brand New, now its out-a print. Steven Dorf is a young kid in this movie who with his neibor Terry battle the demons from hell who have opened a Gate in his backyard. Classic 80's music, hairdoos, cars, and horror. If your a collector of the 80's or even miss them its a must have.

3 out of 5 stars Good cheap thrills, especially for younger viewers.......2006-09-07

Like so many products of the 80's, The Gate succeeds more on nostalgia than actual entertainment value. But that's not to say it isn't worth watching. In fact, it's probably one of the best films of its kind: Low-budget, mid-to-late 80's PG-13 horror with a then-unknown cast, and a generous amount of special effects.

What also strikes me about it, years later, is that the story itself more resembles an old-fashioned monster movie than a teen horror flick. I still get a kick out of watching the basic plot (kids inadvertently unlock a gateway to another dimension, unleashing demonic critters) tick by like clockwork. And it's all fairly inoffensive, though there are still a handful of decent scares.

Even without the nostalgia factor, I think this is a fine kid's horror film. Great for a Saturday matinee or a Halloween marathon paired with TREMORS or Fred Dekker's THE MONSTER SQUAD (for which a DVD release is long overdue).

5 out of 5 stars classic schlocky horror.......2006-01-21

before i even get into my glowing review of this cult classic horror film,i want to call a long overdue moratorium on the long winded, synopsis-heavy reviews, people read these to glean opinions and REVIEWS of the film from like minded genre fans, the brief, succinct synopsis that amazon provides is enough to allow the reader to decide if he wants to check out the film, the poorly written synopses are useless, time consuming, and they take up space. you didn't write the film, so chill out with the play by play, please. anyway, that having been said, this is pure, cheesy, schlocky 80's horror, all the elements are there: bad special effects that elicit instant laughs, a dorky horror freak best friend(who bears a resemblance to paul from the wonder years), a saucy older sister with even saucier friends, and a young, baby faced stephen dorff looking scared and perplexed for most of the film, a far cry from his cocky, arrogant, james dean/vampire turn as deacon frost in 1998's Blade. the final sequence, with the giant demon rising from the hole, is actually pretty impressive, at least for a film made in that era. worth buying. the dark poet

Description

Horror goes to extremes with Wishmaster 3: Beyond the Gates of Hell, the goriest installment of the hit franchise yet. When Diana, a beautiful coed, discovers an ancient gem inside a mystical Persian case, she unwittingly releases the mercilessly evil "Djinn." The gut-slinging demon uses fiendish trickery to take the form of a professor in order to slice, dice and burn his way through the university staff and its students. If he can overpower Diana, his "waker," and grant her three sick and twisted wishes, the very gates of Hell will open up and engulf the world in eternal damnation. With help from the man she loves, she must impale the bloodthirsty demon with a sword from Heaven to save herself and the entire world.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Terrible. Even if you like the Wishmaster, this one is tough to watch..........2007-03-30

Easily the worst of the four Wishmaster films. Andrew Divoff doesn't play the Djinn in 3 and 4 (wisely, I'm afraid) and the film suffers for it. At least he is entertaining to watch even if nothing spectacular happens. It doesn't even seem like they tried at all to make this movie any good. They ignore most of the mythology of the first two movies, and the actors involved are downright awful. Do yourself a favor and pretend they never made this one...

2 out of 5 stars NOT AT ALL ENOUGH FOOTAGE OF THE DJINN DEVILISH MONSTER!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-03-30

What ruined this movie was the fact that the Djinn(who looks like a devilish monster)was only shown for about 8 minutes(or less)throughout this entire 90 minute movie.(I did add up the minutes). And for most of the time, the Djinn was transformed into a blonde guy with beard and mustache that looked SO BORING!!!!!! When I watch a horror movie,I want to see a hideous looking monster for a good amount of time not only for 8 MINUTES or less!!!! Especially of the fact that the Djinn in devilish monster form looks extremely realistic and frightening.Too bad they didnt show much more of him in this hideous form.Im very upset.

3 out of 5 stars The worst of the series.......2007-01-26

Other reviewers said it but I had to see it for myself. This is the worst of the series. The first two Wishmasters starred Andrew Divoff as the Djinn and had a different director. This installment features John Novak as the Djinn and there is a new director. Novak's performance is not bad at all. I actually liked him a lot. He is different than Divoff, but not necessarily better or worse. The trouble with this movie is that it deviates from the Djinn's usual duality of Djinn/Nathaniel and instead he becomes a totally different person for the whole movie. The character he takes over is dull and unemotional and totally not witty at all. Everything I love about his usual alter-ego is missing here. Aside from that, it is set on a college campus, which is always a recipe for disaster (or at least for cheesy plots). By far the worst part of this movie is when the heroine invokes St. Michael and he takes over her boyfriend. Geez! In some spiritual circles, St. Michael protects you by sending evil back from whence it came, so it made sense to me that she invoked him and I thought for a minute that this movie might improve, but when he took over the body of the boyfriend and turned out to be a total nothing, all hope sank for any plot improvements at all.

I give this movie 3 stars only for John Novak. He is the only redeeming quality in this movie.

3 out of 5 stars I just saw this:.......2006-10-12

Because I own the combo-pack of 1 and 2 together that I paid the same price for ($5.99) but I only bought them because I love the makeup on Andrew Divoff (yes the second one was kinda lame and they used a different actor in the 3rd) the first and 2nd had Divoff and I liked the voice inflections that they did with his voice even though in the extras he sounds very similar to this but I did not understand why they sub-titled it 'Beyond The Gates Of Hell' - (Sword Of Jistice) - because there were no gates of hell in the entire film so I did not really understand that premise. I thought the scene of the woman puking up her stomach could have been deleted as it was disgusting and pretty much unecessary. It seems that they wanted a few people to toss thier cookies.
But now I think I might sell mine on Amazon now that I've seen it.
The only reason as to why I liked the first one was because it was directed by Wes Craven. The dialouge and some of the acting in this series was wicked clever.
So they killed the Djinn at the end of Beyond Gates The Of Hell with 'The Sword of Justice' so if the Djinn is dead then why did they make a 4th movie? They've never showed the rest of the legions from hell or the world between worlds where these demons are supposed to dwell in that poem, but as of this writing (10/11/06) I have no yet seen the 4th installment.

2 out of 5 stars Very thin sequal.......2006-07-01

This is the weakest of the four in the Wishmaster series. I had forgotten how poor this was. If you have not seen the first two of this series, than this would movie would not bother you much. As a low budget sequal (such as the last few Prophocies and Hellraisers) I'm sure this was churned out in about 20 days of shooting and about 2 million dollars total to shoot. It meets all the expectations of a semi scary low budget horror/topless flashing girl thrill movie.

However, Since most people who see this have seen the other two, then you will find this Movie very poorly done. The finess of the Djinn character is lost due to the poor script. The way he gets people to to wish is not subtle, the rules set up by the other two are not really followed (1001 souls to collect, the "that which is eternal can not die" line, ect...). The acting affects at times are not congruent with the mood, again compounded by the poor script. And the story line of how they find the jewel in a fed-exed artifact, right out in the open is lame. 1000 years hidden in box out in the open, passing through many peoples hands, and in 5 minutes a curious college girl can find it. Not buying it. ALL in all, buy this movie for cheap, add it to the collection only for posterities sake if you are a collector, but spend no more than rental prices.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An exciting, grisly French thriller!.......2007-08-29

College girl Alex has brought her school friend Marie to her family's country home for a weekend of studying and fresh air. Their relaxing visit is not meant to be, however. A deranged, perverted killer arrives at the home on the same night and slaughters Alex's parents, baby brother, and dog. Marie barely manages to go undetected as the psycho leaves the farmhouse with Alex in the back of his truck. But Marie has come along for the ride too, and throughout the long night she attempts to save her friend while having to keep unnoticed. It's all an adrenaline pumping thrill ride building up to a surprise ending where we learn the killer's true identity and the fates of Marie and Alex.

From director Alexandre Aja, "High Tension" is a gorehound's fantasy with a touch of lesbian eroticism and plenty of what the title suggests. Though the plot is very simple and the twist perhaps something viewers have seen before in different ways, the nonstop flow of the story, excellent visual style, and outstanding performances make it a must watch for one viewing at least. Most notable are Maïwenn Le Besco and Cécile de France in the roles of Alex and Marie respectively, and Philippe Nahon as the killer (Le tueur). The film comes to us from France and is presented in this widescreen, unrated version with a mix of English dialogue and subtitles. The extras include a DVD introduction, commentaries, 3 behind the scenes featurettes, and audio and subtitle options. The DVD lists trailers as an extra, but these are for other films.

2 out of 5 stars BAD ENDING THAT CONTRADICTED THE WHOLE MOVIE!!.......2007-06-06

The first time I saw this movie, I had already seen, and liked The hills have eyes remake. I had high hopes for this movie because of the reviews and initially I was impressed. After I watched this movie and saw the "twist ending" I watched it again because I was confused about a number of things. Don't get me wrong I love movies that have an unexpected plot twist(Jacob's Ladder is easily the best thriller/suspence move ever made)but the plot twist in High Tension made no sence what so ever. example: if the girl is driving the mustang and wrecked it, them who is driving the truck?? And whats up with using a PLUG IN POWER SAW in the middle of the woods(completly pointless and stupid!!) Movies like this show how bad continuity can ruin a film.

5 out of 5 stars Wickedly Sick........2007-03-29

This movie is crazy, sick, and definately twisted. Loved it because of all the gore and it is a great movie for horror fans everywhere but geese it was so just pervertedly sick and grotesque. You have to watch it for yourself to see what I'm talking about. This movie is just amazing but so screwed up all at the same time. I love it. It's one of those movies that has an amazing twist ending that makes you want to go no freakin way and watch the movie over just to check that everything still flows right. I personally was just awed and speachless at the end.

3 out of 5 stars 3.5; I can complain about what I saw but I can't.......2007-02-26

Sometimes you just have to admit it's your own fault for renting a movie. You probably know it's going to be terrible because of word of mouth or reviews but you just try anyway, in hopes that it could pull a rabbit out and surprise you. After being uber-disappointed in the Saw sequels, the Hills Have Eyes remake and the too-awful-for-words tragedy that is Hostel, I know now how recent horror movies are so if it sucks, I've no one to blame but myself. Before he made the Hills Have Eyes remake, Alexandre Aja made this with more than a couple ideas from other films but it ultimately doesn't lead to a satisfying whole, just bit parts.

Marie and Alex are 2 friends driving to the countryside to stay at Alex's old house with her parents and brother. Things are fine until a truck driver pulls up to the house and brutally kills everyone, stalks the rooms looking for Marie and tying up Alex. Marie decides to save the day and help her friend but the killer isn't some run-of-the-mill moron either.

Now, unlike the film's I mentioned where they seemed like endurance tests and how long would it take before I switched the movie off, I had to admit this film did have me for awhile. The first section of it, taking place in the house is creepy with plenty of atmosphere, heightened sound effects and a foreboding feel in the air. Sure there's some gore but it was excusable since they didn't go full tilt with it. But then goes nuts and has some gore, including a big act involving a circular saw and it just feels too much. Whereas before it was more of a thriller/horror, here they overdo it and it becomes just another slasher movie.

Now it comes down to the "twist" which I won't reveal but it feels slightly gimmicky like they saw the Usual Suspects, Memento, the Sixth Sense and Fight Club in a row and thought twist endings were cool so they wrote one of their own. It would be fine if the twist fit but instead it brings just an out of the blue shift that it just doesn't feel right. Then there's the writing where you can notice clues along the way. Some twists work because it's only on second viewing you notice whereas here certain things just look too obvious. Example? A hand carrying bullets. I'll say no more.

If you like Hostel, Hills Have Eyes or Wolf Creek, you'll like this too. If you prefer the Shining or the Exorcist, you might want to look elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Great Horror movie Creepy as Hell.......2007-01-04

Ok I must be the only one who missed teh 1st 15 min of the movie which may have been an advantage.

I turned it on around the time marie was in her room hearing the truck pull up and the guy walk to the front door.

After that its one big gore rollercoaster. I had no idea why or what or who! But even still I couldn't stop watching it!

Its so dreary and gorey the acting and screaming was decent. Mostly noone talks they just scream. All the sneaking around hiding from the killer is very tense, esp the scene in the gas station bathroom.

Then comes the end. I was sorta confused, with the twist. At 1st I had a very small feeling what it was gonna be, then boom, I was right. I didn't know from the beginning. Hence miss the 1st 15 min.

So yes I fell for it. Was I happy? Eh, kinda, I mean I was like NO WAY! Then I got confused and was trying to figure out what I was seeing!

I think this movie is as good as SAW, SAW 2, Hostel, Wolf Creek, Hills Have Eyes and yes reminds me of Texas Chainsaw Massacre,

If you love Horror and have an open mind, you wont be dissapointed!!!!
Even though some said the ending sucked.. To me I couldn't figure how else it could end that would be better!

SO YES A MUST SEE!!!!

If you've never heard of South of Heaven, West of Hell, there's an excellent reason. If you have heard of it, it's probably because you stumbled upon the information that it marks the directorial debut of singer-actor Dwight Yoakam, who managed to sweet-talk a spectacularly quirky cast into abetting the enterprise: current girlfriend Bridget Fonda and her papa Peter; indie-world luminaries Vince Vaughn and Billy Bob Thornton (for whom Yoakam made a memorably loathsome villain in Sling Blade); character-acting stalwarts Bo Hopkins, Matt Clark, Luke Askew, and Scott Wilson; and such icons of the florid fringe as Bud Cort, Paul Reubens, and Michael Jeter. All should file for workman's comp and alienation of audience affection because they got themselves mired in one of the dumbest, most inept, most tediously self-indulgent messes in the history of showbiz hubris.

Yoakam stars (you guessed?) as a U.S. marshal whose tiny Arizona town is literally annihilated by a clan of outlaws from his past. He and they used to be family. Now he has to track them down, even as they go on making life hell on earth for anyone in their path. That includes a hapless government man (B. Cort) whom they're keeping alive for sport, and a traveling lady (B. Fonda) who ... well, who's blonde and is mostly photographed in slow motion because she's the director's girlfriend (see above). It is beyond the scope of mortal man to describe how primitive are Yoakam's notions of dramaturgy (mostly there is just shouting and hair), how any coherent grasp of time or geography eludes him, how little difference it makes whether these gargoyles start killing each other in any given scene. It's just awful. And while we're at it, offal. --Richard T. Jameson

5 out of 5 stars I loved this movie!.......2007-09-04

I'm not great at writing reviews for movies, but I must say, I absolutely loved this film.. Yes, it is very different from any hard-and-fast, cheesy movies (for idiots) you will see in the theators today, but that is what sets it completely apart from every other boring, routine film. It is a western, and serves It does have a bit of swearing and brief nudity, more than I care for.. several scenes were hilarious and many ironically entertaining! I highly recommend seeing this movie before you accept everyone else's unnecessary bashing of it. I know I'll be looking for more Dwight Yoakam movies, and hope they carry along this style of entertainment.

1 out of 5 stars This movie went South, straight to Hell right from the beginning........2007-06-27

The dialogue is artificial. The acting is ridiculous. The photography is beautiful. That's the only good thing about it.
Don't even rent this one.

1 out of 5 stars This one's pretty bad.......2007-01-06

This has to be one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Bad acting, bad, dialogue, nonsensical plot; one can't begin to describe all of the things that are wrong with this movie. Paradoxically, the cinematography is pretty good, so in a way you end up thinking that you're not watching a movie as bad as it really is. I guess that's why I endured about 45 minutes of it before finally giving up on it--something I very rarely do, even with the worst of them.

1 out of 5 stars This movie sucks beyond belief.......2006-05-18

This is by far the worst movie I have ever seen. I would rather push a nail through my finger then ever watch this movie again. Everyone please trust me when I say that you should not waste one penny on this film or take one second out of your lives to watch a moment of this film.

2 out of 5 stars Semi-intriguing but lame........2006-05-01

There are some very intriguing scenes here, mostly underdone, to include fresh takes on the western perspective, nice landscape shots and setting with potentially great characters, but the dialogue was diseased with an excess of modern day cussing/linguistics and as such was absurdly out of historical context - noted lack of enthusiastic acting/acting skills /enough to make this a lame sort of semi-intriguing unintentional spoof.

3 out of 5 stars Cut Version of March or Die???.......2006-01-26

It is strange that MoD has never been released in its full form. IMDB will tell you what is missing. Without seeing this version I can only surmise that since it is P&S-F/S (per the previous reviewer) then it is unrestored. What a shame that a full battle scene (during the desert journey) and the full ending (won't spoil it) has never been released. I do not believe that even the Euro releases have these edits.

I was so excited to see this on the rack of new releases at TOWER Records today...until I turned to the back cover to find...BOTH FILMS are presented PAN AND SCAN FULL SCREEN! I urge fans of these films to boycott...aborted versions...these aren't saturday morning cartoons..we want the full aspect ratio as presented in the theatres!

If you are a film buff..AVOID this edition.

4 out of 5 stars morality tale - told through ice cold computer early 80's atmosphere.......2005-07-13

I find Invitation To Hell to be a strange and wonderful little flick. I remember the first time I watched it. It really sucked me into that cold, detached, materialistic atmosphere very well. Not like that's a place you want to visit other than with escapism.
And even though it was just Tv movie from 1984, the acting was very good (IMO) Even TV flicks from 20 years ago, carry way better acting than anything you'd see of similar ilk these days. I credit Wes Craven for his excellent directing skills and love of true, effective creepiness. Also credit Joanna Cassidy for an excellent turn as the once decent, well mannered wife. Her morph into a superficial, devious and evil sexpot was really believable and effective. Robert Urich as well. To me he was great as the unintimidated, "simple needs" family man...the rock of good surrounded and tempted by sex, money power and superficial acceptance. These are all the selling points of "The Club", headed by Susan Lucci.

i know this all sounds a bit cheesey and in a lot of ways, it is. But with good acting, an ominous "feeling" and atmosphere running through the picture, some good directing, taut little script, the movie comes off most entertaining.
Even Susan Lucci, I think, did a fine job within her hard to believe role. She came off perfectly seductive, tempting and devoid of goodness. I suppose she's meant to represent the devil. In this case, the Devil in early 80's hair and make up and a really hot red dress (among other interesting outfits)

This flick plays as much a morality tale as it does a TV horror film. Again, it does own that somewhat cheesy TV horror flick dressing. But to me, underneath, lies a pretty cool, thought provoking, fun movie that sticks with you.

*I've always liked the first 70-80% of the film best. All the morality stuff....the family's decent into madness and deeper evil (loved ones losing their souls, etc.) The ending couldn't help but be a bit over-the-top and cheesy. It was 1984 and this was a TV budgeted movie.

**I really liked the whole scene with the dog too...(Urich's character would not fall to Lucci's temptations, but his family does) This "dog scene".....Urich's first dealings with his family after their initiation into The Club. their entrance into "the spring" All that with the dog knowing how they've changed. How we now hate Joanna Cassidy's character for not only taking the family dog the vet to be euthanized, but also for "wanting to watch"...I liked the vet character and his good decision to not let her get away with that. At that point of the movie, we really bond with Urich's goodness

The full frame transfer of this DVD is very good. Colors are strong and images sharp. the sound is clear, somewhat dynamic and dialogue is audible throughout

Nice relase of a memorable little Wes Craven nugget from '84

**One thing. I sure wish these TV movies on DVD would start to include TV SPOTS. i mean, who wouldn't want to see a TV Spot for the "upcoming" Friday Night At The Movies feature. Anyway, that's one thing this DVD is lacking...Special features. No trailer, TV Spots or commentary.

I sure wish the older films (whether A grade or B grade) would get some more respect in the way of special features. I mean, newer films are so loaded with fluff and BS. It's the older films we'd like to see good special features inclusive. Who needs to "look back on" (or see for that matter) Cyote Ugly. Just an example. Or say, any of the bloated but empty CGI flicks. Do we really need special features for those? i don't even need the film, let alone special features! Always containing some fluff piece featurette with a bunch of lame, supposed actors overusing the word "amazing" for a half an hour

the 70's was a true golden age of cinema, in so many ways. And the late 70's into the early 80's was a wonderful, inventive, fun time for horror flicks. We WANT special features for these!

So, "Invitation To Hell" has no special features but it's a worthwhile purchase for those seeking a cool little "morality tale horror film" they could've missed out on back then.

5 out of 5 stars Great Susan Lucci Film .......2005-05-26

Susan Lucci plays a great role as Steaming Springs Country Club's Director. Also in the dvd version in one of the scenes you can definitely see a size chart for offical club wear up to XXL did not see any members with that size mentioned. I highly recommend buying the dvd. The only thing that was missing is the tv trailers and behind the scenes, Surround Sound, Commentary from the cast and crew, and a Closed Captioned Subtitle. The only goof was in the viewscreens of the suite Benign it is supposed to say Being. I wish they made a sequel to the film.

4 out of 5 stars very 84'.......2003-12-22

Great movie, definitely has the Wes Craven vibe. Plenty of stuff to laugh at but still totally watchable. Star studded in a great 80's tv/ b-movie way. Soleil Moon Frye (Punky Brewster),Barret Oliver (D.A.R.Y.L.), Jason Presson (Explorers). Susan Lucci rules as the satanic country club chick. If cheesy 80's flicks are up your alley I totally recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Great if just to see Nicholas Worth.......2003-08-13

Not the best of Wes Cravens horrors but not the worst.

Simple but enjoyable horror yarn that is crude in budget but still interesting and compelling to watch.

Although one of the secondary characters, the film is most noticable for character actor/muscleman Nicholas Worth who plays the musclebound demonic sherrif guardian to the hell gate.

2 out of 5 stars AN OCCASIONAL INTERESTING PART.......2004-11-25

Another one of those movies with a title that has nothing to do whatever with the plot. A muddled and incohesive script traps Tom Berenger in the role of a police detective who was shot and resulting in the necessitation for him to use an ambulatory dialysis unit to flush out his kidneys. This unique concept does have a few pivotal points, and offeres Tom a chance to expand his otherwise confusing character. He is asked by the widow of a fellow professor to investigate who brutally murdered her husband while he was making out with a sexy waitress.
This is a thriller with very little thrills; there are no scenes of suspense, even with a half-baked car chase. The climax is anticlimactic, and the inclusion of the visions of the missing waitress come out of nowhere and offer little sense to an already jumbled story.
Berenger does well, as does Kari Wuhrer in the role of the missing waitress. Valeria Golino (Hot Shots, Knots Landing) phones in her performance; Robert Davi does his hard edged cop thing again; and Stephen Lang is wasted as the murdered infidel. Bland and slow paced, AN OCCASIONAL HELL fails to deliver.

3 out of 5 stars Tom Berenger does his best, even when the story doesn't........2002-06-24

I didn't find this movie as creepy as the Twin Peaks comparison. I actually hesitated to watch it because of that. I am glad I did watch it, if only for Mr. Berenger's portayal of an ex-detective. It does contain graphic violence and nudity yet not all stories are about pretty lives. I didn't understand why the blonde popped into his scenes until I realized that this man was desparately lonely. She was his saving grace, giving him that ego boost and intimacy he lacked in his life. This character that Tom Berenger chose to play is in keeping with his other sensitive portayals that help women realize that men are human too. Honoring men and the sacrifes they make in the line of duty is a worthy gesture. If you're a Berenger fan don't hesitate to watch this. The story is an interesting one and the acting is well done by all. I gave it three stars for Tom Berenger. The other two stars are withheld because I couldn't show this movie to my parents. They're from a different generation yet Casa Blanca still stands as the benchmark even now. It's not a classic but Mr. Berenger is. The "mighty haven't fallen." There are just more people writing bad reviews than there are people writing classics.

2 out of 5 stars Kari Wuhrer fans beware.......2001-10-13

This movie was a disappointment. Any fan wanting to see Kari Wuhrer will be let down as she is hardly in the movie. She appears in a few short scenes, and the rest of the movie was not worth the price of the DVD. I recommend renting this movie before deciding to buy it.

1 out of 5 stars OH MY GOSH.......2001-07-20

I was told how bad this movie was. So I just had to buy it and see for myself. And sure enough it was bad.It was so bad it was almost funny. Im a big fan of Stephen Lang, what a waste of talent when he did this movie.Who knows what these guys were thinking when they made this movie! The plot(if there is one) jumps around to much, and whats with the blond chick poping into Berengers head all the time, made no sence what so ever! A very strange movie

3 out of 5 stars An underrated thriller........2000-03-02

I can understand, that some people do not like An Occasional Hell, but the movie is not as bad as they say. Granted, the plot is weird and rather unclear. I had to watch it twice, just to sort everything out,and even then some things did not make sense. I mean, how the hell came a musket straight out of a museum to be loaded especially since it was a percussion piece, so it must have been lying about with the percussion cap in place. A nice way to get yourself shot! Even so this is at least partially made up for by good acting, particularly by Berenger and the characters are rather unique. While maybe not to everybody's liking this is a suspence thriller that deserves more interest than it has gotten.

Description

By the time she was 16, Molly had already lived to tell a bloodcurdling tale: she was the only survivor of a violent murderer who slaughtered all her friends. Disturbed by her horrific past, she focuses her energies on researching the minds of serial killers. Enrolled in a forensic science program led by famed author and man hunter Martin Kane, she joins a study group fixated on solving a local campus murder. When the students realize the killer's modus operandi mirrors that of London's legendary Jack the Ripper, Molly's friends, once again, begin to fall victim around her.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty, Ambitious, Clever, but just a mess........2006-10-23

This movie tries so very hard that you can't help but root for it! The plot is a very clever one, and the heroine is terrific idea for a character. That said, the film is constantly hampered by it's limits of budget, set and other factors that stumble it into contriving itself.

The detective's character is hampered by being only himself, and by listening to the profiler, who he believes is a suspect - and never shown to interact with other police makes him look not villianous, but incompetent. Molly's ablitity to hack in to police files and find answers about Kane and the current investigations are simply unbelievable and everyone's to quick to take them wholly at face value. Setting up everyone at the cabin for the final face off was so ham-handed that it becomes a stumbling block that the plot is hard pressed to over come. Let's face it, if that was the last turn in this steeplechase the horse would have broken it's leg.

However, Molly and Kane are wonderful characters and their chemistry together is part of the glue that keeps the film together. Their intimate scene alone is worth the price of admission. I only wish there had been more scenes with the two of them to build it up, because that payoff, and how it shapes how you see the rest of the film is sheer gold.

More about Molly's past before the island should have been revealed, and the other girls with the exception of Chantelle are seriously underdeveloped. Fewer characters and stronger development would have served better.

The Ripperology is absolutely excellent.

Though, I have one small correction. Ted Bundy didn't charm most of his victims beyond luring them in a trap and then cold cocking them. They went with him because he presented himself as being weakened and needing assistance, not for sex appeal.

5 out of 5 stars Good Movie.......2004-12-23

This movie is really good but I have to say that most of the killings in thsi movie isnt done by the killer its done by the people themselves , Some fall into blades and one gets hit by a car its a movie that is good but the killer only had one true kill in the hole movie.

1 out of 5 stars Failure every which way.......2004-07-19

If you are looking for a movie about the real life Jack the Ripper, this ain't it (one or more of the reviews below are obviously thinking that this movie was the From Hell movie starring Johnny Depp, which it definitely isn't).

If you are looking for a movie based upon some facts of the Jack the Ripper case but going off in a new direction, this isn't a good bet either. It's a typical low budget teen slasher with just enough loose mentions of the Ripper case so they could throw a name on it to catch all the people looking for the other movie. It basically steals the plot of Scream 2, replacing the nonsensical links to the first Scream movie with nonsensical links to the Jack the Ripper case.

If you are looking for a scary horror movie, this ain't it either. The characters are all idiots. For supposed top students in serial killer studies (that all look like teen models, right) none of them act in a way at all realistic for someone in their position. It's like basing a slasher movie at a music camp but with characters who can't play any musical instruments, except worse than that, because these people aren't just dumb for supposed serial killer experts, they make boneheaded mistakes that cheerleader characters in other movies are too smart to make. So right off the bat you couldn't care less if the characters die, which makes it hard to feel any horror. But then the movie manages to miss most every opportunity for suspense and instead makes fuzzy references to things that never appear onscreen but might have been interesting if they had.

If you are looking for a good cheesy teen slasher popcorn movie... nope, not here either. The ending is horribly muddled, the pace is bad, the dialogue is ridiculous, and the romantic or sexy parts they usually use to pad the storyline for those films are entirely absent.

And it doesn't even work as a movie so bad you watch to laugh at its unintentional jokes, because it's just not entertaining. It's not a "Hah hah hah. How stupid" kind of thing, more of a "What? They can't be serious, how lame."

There were a couple scenes and one or two actresses that might have been good in another movie, if only the people writing and producing it had picked what kind of film they wanted to create and then put a little effort into it.

4 out of 5 stars STELAR RIPPER.......2004-03-20

The rating for this totally off by a thousand! This made jump quite a few times. This movie is not as scary as some other movies I have seen in the past. The other reviewers must have been half asleep when they watched this movie. Do not let the rating and the reviewers ratings discourage you. If you are a Jack the Ripper fan you will love this movie. The can be a little bit twisted,so you will have to pay close attention to the movie.

2 out of 5 stars RIPPER OFF.......2004-01-22

John Eyres can't be totally blamed for directing this flick. The script must have seemed innovative and challenging at the time. However, I'm sure once he got into it, he must have been as disappointed as I was. The movie opens with a young girl (AJ Cook from Final Destination II) being pursued by a mysterious serial killer who has evidently wiped out all her friends. Five years later, Molly is taking a class in serial killers (do they really offer such stuff?). Her professor, the disturbingly sinister Kane (played with exquisite boredom by Bruce Payne), tells his class to think outside the box. Ho hum...but of course what happens is that this little group of serial killer students are being wiped out one by one. Enter Jurgon Prochnow in perhaps the most ridiculously funny performance ever given by someone who got rave reviews in DAS BOOT, and the plot sickens. Prochnow is so horribly bad, and whoever did his hair, well they certainly aren't touching mine!
This is also an incredibly sadistic movie, the murders being totally over the top; most of the film is shot so darkly you can't tell what's going on, and there's little redeeming qualities, except for a few tense scenes. The ending is so cryptic, you don't know what the heck really went on.
Could have, should have been better, but barely a decent time waster.
