The two-disc edition of Sin City easily makes the earlier single-disc theatrical-cut release obsolete by including the regular theatrical cut on the first disc, recutting the movie into four extended segments on the second disc (separated by story line), then piling on an impressive load of bonus features. But there's a catch. Billed as "Recut, Extended, Unrated," with "over 20 minutes" of new footage, the new set's four separate stories are extended by only about 6.5 total minutes of movie action (see details below in "What's New"); the rest of the added running time is the splashy new title shots (named by the title of the story or book) and the four minutes of credits that run at the end of each segment. Each addition makes the movie even closer to the comic books, and these extended segments are generally preferable to the theatrical equivalents (unfortunately, there's no Play All option), but don't expect the same impact as Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings extended editions. And although this version is unrated, the only risqué addition is a bit of violence from Miho that's no worse than the rest of the crazy violence in the film.

How Are the Bonus Features?
Robert Rodriguez has always loved DVDs, so the bonus features are extensive. On the first disc, there is somehow room for the theatrical cut of the film with its DTS track (the extended versions have only Dolby 5.1), two commentary tracks, an alternate audio track with a live audience in Austin, Texas, an interactive map of characters and locations, and 47 minutes of featurettes covering Frank Miller, Quentin Tarantino, cars, costumes, props, and special effects. The first commentary is Rodriguez and Miller discussing the concepts and the cast. The second commentary is mostly by Rodriguez, but Tarantino drops in briefly for the scene he directed (with Clive Owen and Benicio Del Toro in the car), as does an enthusiastic Bruce Willis for his segment.

The Tarantino scene gets a lot of attention on the second disc as well, in a 14-minute take in which he can be heard coaching the actors. Also on the disc are Rodriguez's usual "flic school" (among the topics is how scenes were created by merging footage of actors who never actually met), footage of Bruce Willis's band performing in Austin at the time of the shooting, and another Rodriguez cooking school (this time it's breakfast tacos). But the most interesting feature is the "green screen version" of the film: the entire film as it was shot in front of the green screen, sped up to play in only 12 minutes. You can see the actors (in color!) interacting only with the props and each other. Last, there's a DVD-sized complete comic book of The Hard Goodbye.

What's New in the Extended Version?
"The Customer Is Always Right" (the opening sequence with Josh Hartnett and Marley Shelton) has no new footage, but now goes straight into the one-minute epilogue with Hartnett and Alexis Bledel that closed the theatrical cut. "The Hard Goodbye" (with Mickey Rourke as "Marv" ) has two new sequences totaling about two minutes: Marv encounters his mother and finds his gun, and talks to Weevil in the club. In "The Big Fat Kill" (with Clive Owen and Benicio Del Toro), some short dialogue is restored, along with another wicked slice by Miho (Devon Aoki)--about a minute total. "That Yellow Bastard" (with Bruce Willis and Jessica Alba) has about 3.5 new minutes: there are more visitors to Hartigan's hospital bed, including his wife and a nurse; Carla Gugino's Lucille character comes to assist Hartigan when he wants to get out of jail (probably the best addition); and Mr. Shlubb and Mr. Klump have some more lines. --David Horiuchi

1 out of 5 stars Disturbingly violent ... .......2007-08-17

The innovative approach to the look of this film is the primary seduction. Studying the visual effects in isolation is reasonable and informative. Regarding the story itself, I found the form and portrayal of violence in the film to be disturbing. While characters are rendered by living actors (certainly some of my favorite), the violence inflicted by characters on each other in many cases is lethal with the film representing it as survivable. The effect is to create a struggle between a sense of realism and its creative suspension that leaves us with a film that is extremely uncomfortable to watch. Unless you are a fan of the graphic novel series from which the story was adapted, I cannot recommend this film.

2 out of 5 stars For Frank Miller die-hard fans only.......2007-08-13

...the rest of us skip this movie. I'll admit the best thing about the movie is the way it looks. Rodriguez did an excellenct job in bring a comic book to life. However, some things need to stick to their original medium. I'm counting these illogical wrecks of mini-stories as those that fit in this catagory. After Micky Rourke's short (the best one, IMHO) I was ready for this movie to end. Clive Owens seemed miscasted, but Benico sort of saved the day on that story, but it was still riding on the so-so part. After that, I'm thinking surely that's the end...BUT NO. It keeps going and going, until I'm practically begging the DVD player, please no more. Then there's just one more bit, that I was so close to pulling my hair out, that I was relieved that it only lasted less than a minute. Oh, Thank God. If over the top violence is what gets you off, then this is the movie for you. If not, please, please avoid this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible!.......2007-08-06

This is what it looks like when you make a movie from a comic book/graphic novel. Period. Everything else is just crap compared to this, when it comes to making movies from comic books/graphic novels. Period.

5 out of 5 stars A true "Collector's Edition" DVD!!.......2007-07-29

This is one extended edition dvd worth purchasing. Unlike other "double dips" that are marketed as special/collector's/limited/extended edition, this is a release that truly delivers. Not only does this dvd contain the extended edition of each story presented in the film, it also contains the original theatrical edition. The Marv and Hartigan storylines have the most material added to them, you can hardly notice the additions to the Dwight storyline. One of the bonus features explains the chronology of the events in the film, for those who were/are confused. If you don't own the movie, buy this edition. If your a fan buy this edition and sell your single disk release.

5 out of 5 stars Relaxing........2007-07-22

I could write a lengthy review.
I will not because this film needs none.
It was dark, erotic, violent, deep, and basic.
It touched the primal parts of my humanity.
So much today is concerned with socialization, cooperation, networking, brownnosing, surrendering, grudging responsibility.
This film shows the true nature of mankind as it was supposed to be.
Strong, honorable, wise, and lustful.

2 out of 5 stars Do not equate this to CITY OF GOD.......2007-08-31

I don't typically put any energy into covering things I dislike. But if only to keep others from getting, like myself, mislead by the inexplicable 5 star reviews; here's a differing viewpoint.

This film, is well photographed, but that's all it has going for it. It has a protagonist I can't remotely relate to, unlike COG where I did relate to that protagonist. I didn't care remotely about Tsotsi. He was a repugnant character, I didn't give a darn about his redemption.

It takes a special actor to, in the part of a villain, still elicit interest in the audience. Perhaps with a different lead actor, I would have disliked this film less. Not everyone is lead actor material, can carry a film, and the actor playing Tsotsi, definitely cannot. He annoyed me every second he was on screen.(what's the old joke? some people have a face for radio :) )

Murder? Carjacking and shooting a lady? Steal a baby? Use the potential jeopardy of the baby as a plot device for some moron's redemption? That's crossing a few lines too many. And once crossed had no interest in the protagonist. Which translates into having no interest in the movie.

You want to see an affecting movie see CITY OF GOD, or THE THREE BURIALS OF MELQUIDES ESTRADA, but avoid TSOTSI at all costs.

5 out of 5 stars I loved this movie!.......2007-08-03

This is a heart-wrenching movie about, basically, human decenty (and the lack thereof). It seems like it might be a simple movie about a young South African man (subtitled in English) who experiences a profound spiritual awakening upon connecting with an infant who changes his life.

Not so simple. Tsotsi is an AIDS orphan, as they are called in South Africa, and of which they are many. He HAS no ability to connect to other human beings, and his life of crime is a testimony to that. He cares about no one - no family, no friends, not even himself.

With his connection to the infant that he kidnaps (after shooting the baby's mother while stealing her car to get out of the rain), Tsotsi begins to have flashbacks to his own childhood and his own pain that begin to enlighten the viewer to what we are dealing with here.

When Tsotsi meets a young mother and forces her, at gunpoint (!) to "feed" the baby he doesn't even know how to feed, we realize how vacant this young man is. But he is beginning to care - enough to get the baby fed - he just doesn't know how.

We learn, through this interaction, the powerful gifts that mothers provide for their children in nurture and connection that Tsotsi has never known. He is fascinated, moved, pained, awed - as should we all be.

In time, Tsotsi makes the decision to return the baby to its mother, who is still alive, although she will never walk again. Tsotsi realizes what he has taken from them all. He will experience the loss of everything he has never known as he lets this baby go, a baby he has given his own name, David, for as long as he kept him. David, a name he never shared with anybody else, ever. He is beginning to let the world in.

One poignant scene involves a visit to where David lived as a child, where other AIDS orphans, growing in number, tell him they can't take the baby because THEY have nothing to feed him. The scene with the children is where the heart-wrenching tale begins to pivot.

Highly recommended.

Rethinking Aids

5 out of 5 stars Tsotsi.......2007-07-30

Based on a novel by Athol Fugard, Gavin Hood's raw, searing film brings off a tricky premise with just the right balance of sensitivity and force, as the discovery of a baby rekindles in a supposedly hardened thug long-suppressed feelings of humanity and an instinctive desire for redemption. Chweneyagae's complex, astonishing performance provides the film's focal point, and this, combined with Hood's assured pacing and direction, helped net "Tsotsi" a richly deserved Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. A real stunner.

5 out of 5 stars Tsotsi -- A Worthy and Intense Film Experience .......2007-06-25

This is not for the faint-hearted. It is one of the most gritty, and intense and violent urban crime films I have ever seen -- yet at its core is a redemption story well worth seeing.

More than glad I stumbled across a trailer for it on late night TV.

A Satisfied Viewer

3 out of 5 stars You can escape a rut but it isn't easy..........2007-06-22

Tsotsi leads a gang of 3 thugs. No one knows Tsotsi's real name and Tsotsi means thug. He picks the victims and kills with no remorse or apparent emotion. The beginning sets us up for this cold-stone killer. Then after beating one of his gang nearly to death, he goes out and steals a car, shooting the woman who tries to tear the door open as he drives away. Then he learns, she was trying to get to her child who is in a babyseat in the back.

This is when the film takes a turn. The logical thing for this killer to do is just abandon baby and car and walk away. But, he takes the baby with him. Then he tries to care for it keeping it a secret from his gang members.

Now we have some flashbacks to show us Tsotsi's childhood -- and some of the reasons he's like he is. Even so he's still emotionally flat. The change to his personality as he tries to reclaim some of his humanity is a struggle and even at the end we don't know what is happening in his head and heart.

It's a difficult movie to watch because you can't read the main character's body language as he has almost none. The movie is subtitled in English. The DVD we watched was English subtitles over the mix of So. African dialects (I don't have the disk to read the languages).

2 out of 5 stars Movie stunk- HDDVD was good..........2007-09-10

The movie itself was not very good. It was like watching a Lifetime channel movie with bad neighborhood fosterhome brothers inserted. There wasn't as much action or "revenge action" as I was hoping for and the script was not that great. On the HD side, things were better. The video transfer is great and shows the cold side of Detroit very well including all the blue-ish hues of the winter. No signs of artifacts and mostly very sharp. The sounds is fine also w/ just DD+ or Dts to choose from.
An OK movie with a good, crisp looking HD transfer.

    5 out of 5 stars What's Beef?.......2006-06-17

Hot movie. Beefs I liked were "50 VS Bang 'Em Smurf & Domination" and "Game VS Yukmouth" 50 Loses on every beef he comes up in, with exception of Ja Fool and Bitch-Zino (see Beef 1)

Only beefs that I hated were "Chingy VS Nelly" and "Twista VS Bone Thugs" Don't get me wrong I LOVE Bone Thugs music 2 death and Twista is iight but their beef was just stupid and almost nothing so there wasn't a point in showing it. AS for Chingy and Nelly, that is probably the next "NSYNC VS Backstreet Boys" type beef hahaha.

Go pick this dvd up now if you didn't already!

2 out of 5 stars Almost hated it.......2006-03-29

I guess what they say about sequels is true. Beef went downhill since the first one. This vol. as far as I'm concerned has nothin' to offer. I watched it 3x and tried to like it. High and drunk 1 out of 3 and still wanted to frisbee this s***. The 50 and Smurf beef was a waste of space. I hate the way it is so damn one sided. If they couldn't get 50 side of the story for this beef or the one with Game, then it should'nt have been included. You only got one side of the story. And just to prove how stupid them n****s is. How you gon pay to see 50 show start a fight and then get your a** arrested. That's why them n****s will stay in the ghetto and never make it cause they so damn stupid. Chingy vs. Nelly. A wack rapper dissin another wack rapper. Why was this even added? TI and Luda. Damn son, I don't know but if that was me I would have put out a big a** diss anyway. Lil Scrappy and the muthaf***in' COPS?! What the hell does that got to do with beef in the industry? What does that got to do with this DVD? Nothin', just a waste of time. TI and Lil flip was a good story. That had somethin' to do with hip hop. Flip said some s***, Ti got on stage and did his damn thing. The Yukmouth and Game was the best one. Them n****s got at each other and stayed on record. Game and 50 could have gotten way the f*** outta hand but it didn't. But once again the best they could do with 50 side of the story was a recording and a live tape. So what was the point of that? I heard 50 side of the story more from the NY daily news, and that's not a rap magazine, journal, or a free dvd comes with a free t-shirt type s***. This whole dvd is damn near pointless to include the features. And once again QD3 has yet to provide the story of beef between establish artist who have been around for more than 3-5 years. Such as MC Eiht vs. DJ Quik, Kim and Foxy, NAS and Cormega. Yo I just hope this is the last one. A complete disappointment.

    5 out of 5 stars Oooh, juicy.......2006-03-09

I always wondered why I never heard T.I.'s response to Ludacris' rhyme on Young Buck's album. Ludacris' response was dope though...especially the "t.i.p. of..." part. I'm scratching my head over the beef with Game and dude from "Five on It." If "Five on it" and him agreed that everything was cool, why did Game come at him like that? It sounded like they were telling TWO completely different stories...and nothing matched. The story about Bang 'em Up, Smurf and 50 Cent...wow. That was wild. Now I understand the part in 50 Cent's movie that Terrance Howard played. Sounds like Smurf was a little over the top, but still had his boy's back...so I have mixed feelings on that one. But as for the guy who said "his bodyguard TRIED to throw a chair"...yeah right, that guard THREW that chair HARD. I don't understand their purpose of coming to the concert to meanmug dude. If you're mad at him, you coming to his concert is only putting money in his pocket...how dumb is that?

What really interested me though was the beef between Royce Da 5'9 and Eminem. I bought Royce's album and I thought it was pretty average but after I heard the beef and his album played in the background, I realized I slept on it and plan to rebuy it again. The part about making sure the shooter can aim now makes sense to me, because when I saw it in Eight Mile I was lost. I'm assuming Bugs was the slow dude in Eminem's movie...anyway, I'm glad they could get past their differences.

As for T.I. and the Lucky Charms guy, you know, I thought Lucky Charms couldn't find his brain if his hand was right on his head, but from watching this interview, the dude got a lot more sense than I thought he did. I was shocked.

This whole tape was entertaining. I originally saw it on BET, but after Beef II and Beef III aired, I had to get 'em all. The first one is still my favorite because of Common, but they were all really good.

And as for Nelly, he was DEAD WRONG for that situation with Chingy. That rhyme was straight-up disrespectful. #1 You can't invent a slang term like "dirty" which was used WAY before him. Just because he didn't use it in a rhyme doesn't mean he didn't know the word. #2 Chingy came to him like a man and Nelly acted like a child. #3 Why is the tall dude even on that tape? Chingy wasn't even referencing him...and then the dude pronounced Kum-ba-ya wrong and I was threw! I laughed at him through the rest of the interview. Nelly's reaction made me not want to buy his next album...and judging from how wack "Sweat" and "Suit" was, I probably won't.

The title says it all: Tupac Shakur was as much angel as outlaw. Unlike some of the other profiles made in the wake of his passing, Thug Angel doesn't focus only on the first few days of his career or the last few days before his death, but on his entire life. That makes it valuable as much for the fan as for the merely curious. The production was backed by friends and associates and includes never-before-seen material. It's surprisingly evenhanded, juxtaposing footage of Tupac at 17, for example--sounding mature beyond his years--with an interview conducted years later on a shooting range. Passion was still in full effect, but idealism had been replaced by paranoia. Peter Spirer's film is a documentary, not a music video, and contains only snippets of Tupac's work. At its best, Thug Angel makes a compelling case for his continued relevance as an artist and activist. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

    Description

In the $3 billion industry of hip-hop music, no one has touched as many lives with a microphone as Tupac Shakur. In this never-before-seen footage, see Tupac at seventeen, a young man at the edge of his destiny, speaking out about injustice on the streets of Oakland. See him at the brink of his stardom, kickin' freestyles with Treach, Biggie and Grand Puba. See him at the shooting range, at home, at the highs and lows of his career, as a man constantly plagued by and provoking the media. See Tupac as never seen before, as the people closest to him knew him. See him as Thug Angel. Directed by Academy Award nominee Peter Spirer (Rhyme and Reason), Thug Angel takes you beyond the drama of Tupac's notoriety in the press through all-new interviews with friends, collaborators and scholars as they look back on Tupac and define his legacy today. 92 minutes.

The documentary "Tupac Shakur: Thug Angel" takes a deconstructionist approach to analyzing the Rap superstar. Was Tupac a thug whose life ended in an uncanny replication of his lyrics, or was Tupac Shakur, a revolutionary with anarchistic beliefs? With these two diametrically opposed images, the filmmaker deconstructs Tupac's life while exploring both possibilities. As a result, this thought-provoking documentary offers a great deal of insight into a life that so often hit the front page.

Tupac, named after a Bolivian revolutionary, was born into a troubled family--his mother was a Black Panther, and other relatives served jail time. One relative even received political asylum from Cuba. By the time Tupac was a teenager, he was no stranger to poverty, and frequent moves across country finally left him living in Marin County. The film includes an interview with a 17-year old Tupac, and it's clear from the statements he makes that he's intelligent, idealistic, respectful towards women and very socially conscious. It is difficult to align these early statements of Tupac with some of the film's later interviews. Within a few years, now famous, Tupac's world view is much harder. There's one scene of him toting a weapon in a shooting range, and one senses he is preparing for the big showdown he is sure is in his future. It is at this point that Tupac makes several anarchistic statements: "The police ain't nothing but a gang. The National Guard ain't nothing but a gang. The army ain't nothing but a gang." But it's also quite clear from the documentary's investigation of Tupac's past why he felt this way. Tupac noted that even Dan Quayle took the time at the Republican Convention to lob a verbal attack against the rapper, and as his acquaintances realised, Tupac interpreted this attention to be devastatingly significant.

The documentary includes many interviews with those who knew Tupac best--relatives, former manager Leila Steinberg, Quincy Jones, and fellow rappers. The film touches on Tupac's Death Row Records contract, and the feud with Biggie. He is described by those who loved him as "the hardest working man in hip hop." "Tupac Shakur: Thug Angel" is a fascinating account of the rapper's brief and brilliant life, and as an attempt to unravel the mystery of Tupac's two sides, I think the film succeeds quite well. The DVD also contains a booklet that highlights key points in Tupac's personal life and his career--displacedhuman

As to say this, I can't get my eyes on Tupac. 'Cuz he had a lot going on in his life, you know what I'm mean. You see Tupac will be telling a lot of stories of his past when he begin writing poetry at a early age, learn to act, and how to be a superstar in the rap business. Yeah Tupac been gone for 7 or 8 years now, but in 10 years he'll be remember 'cuz he modered a generation for the hip-hop community. I also a lot of people from that culture to Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, JFK, RFK, and on and on.

Now a lot of people are still talking about him and how he became a part of our culture. That's why he lived his life the way he live b/c of the fight with Biggie, the East Coast/West Coast rap war, how he got arrested, been in jail all of his life, need I say more?

Nobody even care on how he lived or how he died. He help changed that by putting it into his lyrics. The reason why I love him the most is there's nobody like him like Jada Pinkett Smith "There's nobody, nobody like that man. I don't care how many records you sell. I don't care how popular you are..."
You know Tupac lives on and he'll always will be to the fullest.

For those of ya'll are missing out a lot of good information about this icon, I urge you to check him out. He's one of the greats that put it on since Martin Luther King and Malcolm X we learned back in the day.

A frenzied, screwball comedy with a lighter-than-light touch, Nurse Betty is a radical departure for director Neil LaBute, who helmed the vitriolic In the Company of Men and Your Friends and Neighbors. Betty (Renée Zellweger) is a perky Kansas waitress whose sole happiness comes from her obsession with the television soap A Reason to Love, starring dreamboat doctor David Ravell (Greg Kinnear). When her slimy car-dealer husband (Aaron Eckhart) enters into a drug transaction that goes horribly awry, Betty inadvertently witnesses the carnage and, in shock, becomes Nurse Betty, determined to reunite with her long-lost love, Dr. Ravell. Tailed by two hit men (Morgan Freeman and Chris Rock), Betty heads to L.A. a determined woman, unaware she has their huge drug stash in tow. Though it takes a good half-hour to get going, once LaBute and the movie hit top speed, it's a surreal, often brilliant ride, as Betty's fantasy and reality collide, with unexpected (really unexpected) developments. The screenplay (by John C. Richards and James Flamberg) is wickedly inventive, and like his previous films, LaBute has assembled a peerless cast. Zellweger is charming and daffy in her best performance since Jerry Maguire, and Freeman is by turns menacing and touchingly romantic in his obsession with Betty. Kinnear is the epitome of self-serving shallowness (and makes us love him all the more for it), and Rock finally shakes his standup persona and emerges as a great comic actor. Look also for a scene-stealing Allison Janney as the producer of Kinnear's soap. Most movies rarely get such talent operating at full capacity, and Nurse Betty soars because of it. --Mark Englehart

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Wacky.......2007-09-01

I must confess upfront that I really like Renee Zellweger. There is something vulnerable in almost all of her performances, something sad and yet hopeful in her eyes. Here she is a waitress with a straying, drug dealing, car salesman husband. But no matter: she's hopelessly in love with a doctor, rather, a character on an afternoon TV soap opera. When her husband is killed, she sets out to Los Angeles with the delusion that she is somehow part of the doctor's/actor's life. And she succeeds after a fashion. She even dresses like a nurse, all white and crisp, and tries to get a job in a fictional hospital. People think she is joking, but she is delusionally serious. Then she saves an accident patient's life with a procedure she saw used in the soap opera....

The movie is often funny, with pathos, jeopardy, and a completely satisfying outcome. My only criticism is with Chris Rock, who plays one of the men who is chasing Nurse Betty (Zellweger). Chris Rock plays Chris Rock, the vulgar comedian whose only schtick is words that most people do not say in polite society. I'm not amused by his comedy routine and I'm not entertained by his performance in this movie.

4 out of 5 stars A classy black comedy romance.......2007-08-22

Nurse Betty is a film that isn't sure what it wants to be, but is still hugely entertaining. Renee Zellweger plays the title role, who after witnessing a murder goes on the road to meet and fall in love with a Doctor in a soap opera. The twist is that the trauma has affected her mind so she believes the soap opera character is a real person.

Of course it isn't as simple as that! Morgan Freeman and Chris Rock play two dodgy characters who are trying to track Betty down. Chris Rock is not an actor I rate at all, but here with the always excellent Morgan Freeman he is watchable and the two actors work off each other very well. This is all done with some style and reminded me certain parts of the Coen Brothers movies, with perhaps just a hint of Tarantino.

The only downside for me was the music soundtrack, which was a little too gushing and romantic. However in all other respects this is a well constructed road movie that I throughly enjoyed and would happily recommend to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Crazy little film........2007-07-10

Nurse Betty starring the very talented Renee Zellweger is an interesting and quite strange film. This film really shows Zellweger's incredible range as an actress, she can play any kind role. Nurse Betty is the story of a woman who witnesses her husband getting murdered and then warps into a world of delusion, she falls for a soap opera actor played by Greg Kinnear. She truly believes his character is real and she will stop at nothing until she can be with her hunky crush. The plot seems far-fetched but this film works, it can be violent at times but I enjoyed Nurse Betty and hopefully so will you. This is a dark comedy and it is one of the best films of 2000.

1 out of 5 stars WANT TO SEE A MAN SCALPED ALIVE? WATCH NURSE BETTY.......2007-03-20

THANKS NURSE BETTY AND NEIL LABUTE, (DIRECTOR). I now know what it looks like to see a human being scalped alive with a sock stuck in his mouth, then shot in the back while scuttling across the floor like a beetle bug for his life. I can't tell you how much invaluable insight this has added to my life experience.

Thanks for the nauseating "punched in the stomach" feeling I had in my gut and the two days of reliving the gruesome, grisly scene. The story line could not possibly have survived without the vivid detail and it was so well done, down to the last spatter of blood.

Thanks for the R rating you gave it. If it had been given the X rating that it deserved for graphic violence, I might not have rented it. Thanks for calling it a comedy. Though it might have started out seeming like it was going to be one, if I had known what it really was, I might not have rented it and thus deprived myself of this wonderful piece of filmmaking and storytelling, so full of insight, so uplifting, so cleverly executed. Did I say executed? That you did very well.

JUST DO NOT BUY THIS!!! save your money and get george bushs' diary on love making instead.

    Description

In the tradition of Takeshi Kitano, Sergio Leone, and George Romero, Japanese action director Kinji Fukasaku (Battle Royale I and II, The Yakuza Papers) brings to life Street Mobster, the story of a violent killer who will stop at nothing to satisfy his lust for blood. Released from prison, gangster Isamu Okita plans to start his own gang and begins a reign of terror using beatings, prostitution, stabbings, and murders to fight his way to the top of the gangland world. Street Mobster is a look into the dark realm of Japan's criminal underworld, where anything can be had for a price.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars this 1972 street thugs story is not bad but not great either.......2007-05-17

a very simple and straightforward storyline with a hothead street thug toughed out his luck; with a two-bit bar whore he raped fell for him and died for him in the end. all the clan members in this film were not as cool as some other better yakuza films except the cold fish yato san. the turf war between him and his rival clan was not evenly balanced since he seemed to have only 2 members in total, while his opponent clan got lot of members. the actor who played the main character thug who toughed out his luck and died along with his raped victim was not a good enough actor. this violent yukuza movie should be and could be better, but failed on both counts.

    5 out of 5 stars Fukasaku's Street Mobster.......2004-10-03

This presentation of Street Mobster from Home Vision Entertainment is really spectacular. The picture looks great for a Japanese film from 1972, and the subtitles have been translated quite nicely. It stars Bunta Sagawara and Noboru Ando, who is a former real-life yakuza - when he disbanded his gang, he started acting in yakuza movies. This yakuza film is one of Fukasaku's earlier yakuza films - meaning it came before Battles without Honor, Graveyard of Honor, Yakuza Graveyard, and Cops vs. Thugs. However, this one is very similar in style and narrative, though much less confusing than the beautiful chaos of Battles without Honor. Overall, I liked it less than Battles without Honor and Graveyard of Honor, the other films released by HVE, but it really does compare. Definitely see this if you like yakuza films. Also, it includes a trailer gallery for the Fukasaku films released by HVE as well as the Zatoichi series, and has a very interesting interview feature with former yakuza. Highly Recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Yakuza Classic.......2004-09-21

Kinji Fukasaku's gritty 1972 Yakuza classic is finally on DVD and it was worth the wait. This HVE package is a delight, with a fine widescreen transfer and enthusiastic liner notes from Toyko film buff, Patrick Macias. But in the final analysis, it is the film which matters, and Street Mobster is a winner all the way. With Street Mobster on DVD, can Fukasaku's masterpiece, The Yakuza Papers, be far behind?
