Description

This production is filled with historical facts and personal biographies of the Okinawan Island of Karate Masters. Miyagi Funakoshi , Kyan Motobu, Matsumura, Chatan Yara are but a few of the names that Professor George Alexander has compiled in this work. He deals includes comprehensive information that only a scholar of the Okinawan martail arts could devulge.

Professor Alexander is also the author of The Bubishi, The Japanese Martial Arts Dictionary, and over fifty DVD/ video titles.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars You're kidding. Right!.......2005-11-07

So full of errors that one must assume that the producer is not the scholar of Okinawan karate he claims to be, or any other subject for that matter.
As far as being a "Professor" is concerned, repeated requests to the "scholar of the Okinawan martail (sic) arts" have failed to reveal what university awarded him a Ph.D, and in what subject.

I had high hopes for this video after reading the contents on this site, but let me tell you that it did not live up to my expectations.
The video started off with a relatively nice 10 minute video section with some very, very short video clips of the masters mentioned in the description and if you really need to see several masters doing 3 or 4 moves of a few different katas then you will be happy with this part of the film.
This is where the video goes to heck in a hand basket though. From here on out the video is basically the guy who produced it (George Alexander) giving an impromptu 50 minute speech on random topics about anything he felt like talking about. This including migration theories of how neandrathal man traveled to the Ryukyu islands and different theories about weapons that he personally did not believe in. Imagine what most karatekas laarned in their first six months of karate packed in with a bunch of useless information that really makes you scratch your head. Also it would seem that the video was shot with an old VHS-C camera with no microphone so there is a ton of hiss and it sounds like Mr. Alexander is speaking to us from the bottom of an oil drum.
But believe it or not, this is not the low point of the video. At this point he gets some guy to pick up the old video camera and take a walk through the okinawan karate museum. By the end of the video I was feeling sea sick as I do believe that the camera man must have been suffering from Parkinsons disease. Anyway, during our tour through the museum the narrator was able to repeat pretty much all of the same information he covered in the last section. He also took this opportunity to hawk his book for sale for only the 23rd time in this 60 minute film.
This film was poorly shot, poorly rehearsed and a real waste of thirty bucks. If you are truly interested in purchasing this video I will shoot an equal quality movie of me in my living room talking about a bunch of stuff you already know in the least interesting way possible. I will even undercut this guy and do it for half the price.
If I could give this video less than one star I would.
