5 out of 5 stars Be a thinker!!.......2007-01-18

I have over a hundred and twenty books on martial arts. I have around forty to fifty dvds and tapes on the subjects of Wing Chun, Tai Chi, BJJ, Baguazhang, Xing-I, and much more. Amongst the Wing Chun dvds that I have are the series hosted by Benny Meng. Which I consider to be an excellent work. Yet there were some blanks that needed to be filled in.
In Mr. Michael Wong's dvd, some of these blanks were filled in. I purchased the fighting arts and self defense dvds, since the price was so good. Once I viewed them, I went and purchased the whole Wing Chun series.
One thing that is important in Martial Arts is that it be "ALIVE". You learn the form, system, kata, movements or whatever you would like to call it and then you practice on someone. In Mr. Wong's dvds, he emphasizes this. He states that you must train with an opponent that is not just doing what you wish him to do. That is why in time past they invented push hands and sticky hands. They had no way to safely test their skills with one another. So they had to devise a way to work with an opponent in a safe fashion but still get the feel of an uncooperative adversary. This is why Judo, Aikido and BJJ does what they do. Almost all their moves are made so that they can be performed on a partner without killing the other person. Hence they get the feel of an opponent that is fighting them.
When it comes to striking though, we have not been able to test our skills safely up until the past fifty or so years. With the advent of plastics and other essential materials, the striking arts can now practice with almost the same amount of intensity as a grappling art.
(Sorry to go off on a tangent, but on with what I thought of about Mr. Wong's Dvds. )

I believe that he sticks mainly within the parameters of Wing Chun. I don't believe that he chases hands (at least not too much), as one of the other writers said, yet I would say that one should investigate the art through several sources. In Benny Meng's DVDs (Who is the curator of the Wing Chun museum, by the way) he lists a side kick as part of the Wing Chun arsenal, so I do not see why anyone would think that a side kick is inappropriate for Wing Chun. Another issue that was brought up is simultaneous blocks and punches. This is not par for the course in any Wing Chun system that I have seen. With the exception of Bui Ji. True simultaneous blocking and striking must be preformed with one arm. If you are saying that Mr. Wong doesn't use Tan Sau while punching, or if you are saying that he doesn't perform Bui Ji in the right way. I must say that you are mistaken. If you wish an art with simultaneous blocking and striking, you would be much better off with Xing-I or Hsing Yi if you prefer.

We have the internet, dvds, cds and other learning devises. The old masters of the past martial arts did not have these options. They had a teacher and maybe a book or two. The teacher said this and they did it. What option did they have???
So I would purchase Mr. Wong's dvds if you are interested in Wing Chun. But I would also purchase from other recognized teachers ( such as the above mentioned, plus William Cheung, Garrett Gee and Randy Williams, etc.) on the art then compare and find the truth of the matter. Then see what works for you.
On last thought (sorry for blathering on). A greyhound cannot be a good sled dog and a Siberian Husky will never be the fastest dog a the track. So go out and find what martial art is right for you and pursue it.

4 out of 5 stars Wing Chun made easy.......2006-07-02

Everything I read in the review prior to buying the DVD was absolutely true...that in itself speaks volumes, after there are many such DVD's to choose from.

Having done a few months of Wing Chun the DVD helped further my training, specially completing my training in Siu Lam Tao.

2 out of 5 stars Are you kidding me?.......2006-03-25

I didn't find this video helpful in any way. In fact, the video was more funny than useful. I can't decide what was the most comical, between the stream of conscious dialog, the interview with a "law enforcement" official, or the scenes of the "master" filmed with a camcorder on the front lawn. As I watched this DVD, I could not help feel that I was being punked.

5 out of 5 stars Top notch.......2005-07-28

This is an awesome training DvD for Wing Chun! Sometimes the Dvd menu/format can be a little confusing at first but otherwise it's top notch. I can hardly wait to get thru this one and order another one of this guys DvDs. I was able to get this at a real bargain on Amazon for about 14$ usually this guys stuff is way higher. I will probably wait though for another one to go on sale and grab it! This is a real bargain!

1 out of 5 stars SUCKS.......2007-03-24

Who ever put this product together doesn't care about repeat coustmers. Do not buy this product or any other product promoted by these people. It is to bad they don't have a negative rating.

3 out of 5 stars There are better choice for easy self defense........2007-02-19

Unfortunately, this is based on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu which has become very popular with young males over the last few years and is similiar to wrestling.

While there is nothing wrong with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, its not a system that small females or older individuals tend to do well in. I also have reservations about Korean Tae Kwon Do because it requires so much flexibility and takes a long time to learn.

Personally, I would recommend something from the Israeli fighting systems because they are 1. Easy to learn. 2. Easy to Remember and 3. Don't require knowledge of submission holds and ground grappling.

For easy self-defense, check out Krav Maga or anything by Paul Vunak or Jim Wagner.

5 out of 5 stars A very well organized and well thought out approach to self defense.......2006-12-12

The first time I have seen a minimalist approach to defense in a high stress environment, using a few simple techniques for multiple attacks and focusing on applications for different types of athletic abilities. A realistic attitude was presented in admitting the unpractical-ness of elaborate techniques presented elsewhere, and due seriousness given when dealing with armed attacks. Overall, Mr Simco is friendly and patient with his instruction, with good video editing, use of effects and camera work. My compliments to Mr. Simco's assistant Nick, who patiently endures being the 'punching bag' in the demonstrations! Beware of the choppy start of the video and be aware of the law enforcement focus of the 2nd half of the video,'restraining techniques' if a private citizen. A refreshingly honest and useful presentation!

5 out of 5 stars "Excellent flow patterns. Functional, reliable techniques.".......2006-11-10

This is exactly what I was looking for. Simco shows some awesome wrist locks with great explanations. The DVD was a success because I watched it with a partner and followed along. I converted many of them into one-step sparring techniques that look pretty sharp. I am very pleased with this self-defense DVD, the instructor is extremely knowledgeable about the subject material and it is a no nonsense DVD that gets right to the heart of strategy. Great tool!

Description

Wing Chun is widely recognized as one of the fastest styles in the world. It has a speed and directness of action that is difficult to match. Ideal for self defense as a starting point for further study of Martial Arts or simply as a hobby. Wing Chun is both challenging and rewarding and can be practiced anywhere. This DVD is based solely on Wing Chun as a self defense art. It draws on all three of the original forms but there is little or no training in specific movements or the forms themselves. Instead, the training is centered on real life application and situations that may arise. In its original form Wing Chun is already an outstanding self defense art but by drawing on his own extensive knowledge, Sifu Wong has created this Wing Chun hybrid to speed learning and make the techniques practical for all. Making use of a partner for much of the training, you will learn how to apply the techniques to people rather than dummies or in thin air. This form of teaching helps you to understand the energies and forces involved and also demonstrates how the techniques do not require great strength or flexibility to be able to use. Aimed to be an introduction into self defense, this DVD will give you an insight into the world of self preservation and martial arts that is available to everyone but exploited by few.

I thought the DVD was ok, but short. moves that where deminstarted where advanced. I was looking for a DVD with less skill needed. thank you. Kathy

4 out of 5 stars Good training!.......2007-05-20

Bit fast and hard to follow at first, but master wong gives it to you in fast and slow motion...and you can pick and choose the various levels of training (close in.....amber zone..green zone..etc).

I am glad it is in my martial arts library

1 out of 5 stars Particular Wong.......2007-01-19

This DVD might work for someone who has never trained any martial arts.
I had high expectations on this DVD and was dissapointed on Master Wongs performance (or Particular Wong as we came to know him, since every 3rd work is "particular"... which is not a point however).
He does manage to explain the basics of Wing Chun but fails to execute them in action. The main problem is that all his moves are so carefully planned that its like a dance. A Bad dance. Since Master Wong antisipates the incoming attacks he pays 100% attencion on his techniques making him self open to ANY other attack. Which is kind of scary look at. Even though he explains the same things over and over again this DVD is hard to follow. And this is not due the language barrier (I speak 7 languages).
I try not to only complain about the DVD. I pay respect to any one who has devoted them selfs to martialarts. It does have few nice techniques and ideas. But I would not recommend this to advanced practiseners.
I have trained activly for few decades. Several years in China and in Japan.

This DVD does show some good techniques for basic self defense, including being attacked armed and unarmed. People that give this DVD a low rating are most likely disappointed because it is for SELF DEFENSE, not a guide to"whooping a**."

The reason I gave this a 4 rather than a 5 is the lack of detailed explaination. Most of this can be understood visually, but you are more than likely going to need to watch each lesson many times to fully learn the techniques.

I would definatly recommend practicing these moves with a friend, so if you need to use this in real life, you will be familiar and comfortable with it.

1 out of 5 stars Bad disk, Poor information.......2007-07-02

First, this disk would not play on my DVD player. It would only work on my computer.

Second, this disc briefly mentions that it illustrates the Tomiki branch of Aikido, which uses very different terminology and basic techniques than the more prevalent styles of Aikido.

Third, there is very little information of how most of the demonstrated techniques actually work. (Note carefully: these techniques are DEMONSTRATED, not taught.) The concept of "breaking balance," is briefly mentioned at the end of the DVD, but is never related back to the basic techniques demonstrated.

Last; the websites mentioned on the disc no longer seem to have any information about Aikido.

If you want to learn something about Aikido, go to a local Dojo, watch a training session, and talk to the sensei. Then use the money you'd pay for this DVD for an introductory lesson.

1 out of 5 stars Yet another DVD doesn't work.......2005-11-01

I ordered my first copy and found that the DVD did not work. I contacted Amazon and they were great taking care of the return. I requested a replacement copy and it arrived with more scratches then I've seen on most rental DVD's. Surprise surprise the second copy did not work either. It appears quality control has not been high on the producers list. Do you think the third time could be a charm?

1 out of 5 stars would not play.......2005-10-02

This DVD was tremendously disappointing. The DVD could not be read by any of our DVD players. We have three different brands/styles of DVD players, including one that specifically advertises that it can read home-burned DVD discs and one on our computer that has been able to read even DVDs made on hand-held video/DVD recorders. I have to say MR. Webb's Dvd was a great teaching dvd on knife fighting . He really goes into great details on many great styles of fighting. He also mentions that you will most likely get cut during a knife fight. All the other dvd never say that and never prepare you on what to do about it.
Mr. Webb covers almost all aspects of knife fighting in a real and easy way for anyone to learn. I highly suggest everyone who wants to learn about knife fighting get this DVD.

    1 out of 5 stars Good instructor but . . !!.......2007-06-26

The instructor has great experience and well skilled, unfortunately, the making of this DVD is very weak. In summary:
1- Camera position is always at the wrong place
2- Lighting is very weak, so dark
3- Not enough explained the techniques
4- The style is more of a class training, which makes it less interesting for someone who want details of skills

    In conclusion:
I would not recommend this particular DVD for existing jujitsu guys, its nice for someone who just would like to have an idea about the game or more interested in self-defense

5 out of 5 stars An Impressive DVD Set A+++.......2005-03-06

This is good real good. Both Masters are very skilled and definetly know street fighting and what to do when your life is on the line. The combination of having Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Sambo is a real powerful mix and the groundfighting techniques gave me what I was looking for, how to fight on the ground and survive. I spent a lot of time in Tae Kwon Do and Boxing and always felt concerned as to what to do if I didn't take the guy out and the fight went to the pavement. Not anymore this 2 DVD set has all the answers. Anyone looking for ground fighting techniques will find all they need on these 2 DVDs.

5 out of 5 stars Great Mixed Martial Arts Self-Defense.......2004-02-17

I was pleasantly surprised with the valuable content Adam "Pitt Bull" Hutchins offers in his Mixed Martial Arts "Dirty Street Fighting" DVD instructionals. Having bought his complete 5 DVD set it has proven to be well worth the money. Each tape covers in good detail all aspects of street fighting from striking to takedowns and groundfighting submissions. This Volume 5 is my favorite because it shows how to hit your attacker with really penetrating kick-punch combinations that give you the opportunity to move in with a takedown so you can finish off your opponrnrt with a submission hold. This is really a great series not only for people wanting to defend themselves but also for skilled fighters looking to improve their no-holds-barred fighting techniques. Definetly good material to have.
