You will love all the movies. It is worth the investment because there is such a nice vareity of different movies that you are nicely surprised . It is a good buy. After veiwing I read the books. Not many movies inspire this action.

Pirate Movies.......2006-07-05

This a pretty good collection of Pirate movies, although the quality and special effects left a little to be desired. Overall, this collection is worth it.

Plenty of swashbuckling action for cheap!.......2004-05-05

I love a good swashbuckler classic, & you get a pretty good collection here for a very low price. Captain Kidd stars Charles Laughton in another great villanous role, & Randolph Scott, who was 46 at the time(!), as the man determined to bring him to justice. Considering it was made in 1945, the picture quality is pretty good. This is a fun classic for swashbuckler fans. The Son of Monte Cristo is definitely one of the corniest movies I've ever seen! Most of the dialogue is unintentionally hilarious, but it was very entertaining & makes the perfect movie for a rainy night! It stars Louis Hayward, George Sanders, Joan Bennett (who was in several great film noirs), & Clayton Moore (the Lone Ranger!). Long John Silver's Return to Treasure Island is the fun sequal to Treasure Island, & Robert Newton once again plays a pirate to perfection! The picture quality is below adverage, but the film itself is great. This is probably the most entertaining of the three films thanks to Newton's over-the-top performance that kept me laughing the whole way through! These aren't masterpieces, but they're great fun for the whole family & well-priced.

FAMILY CLASSICS 4 MOVIE PACK is a nice little set of older films that will appeal to kids of all ages.

"Return to Treasure Island" is an Australian sequel to the British-made 1950 "Treasure Island." Robert Newton, who literally invented all the cliché pirate mannerisms (such as "Arrrrrrrrrrr!") reprises his role of one-legged Long John. After this movie, Newton starred in a TV show that was exported from Australia to America. "Long John Silver" was one of the first series to be shot in color. Newton died soon after its first and only season was completed.

Charles Laughton's portrayal of "Captain Kidd" is somewhat more restrained (if less courtly) than his "Mutiny on the Bounty" Captain Bligh. Co-star Randolph Scott is the handsome hero here. Look for Sheldon Leonard in Kidd's crew. Leonard was the racetrack tout on the "Jack Benny Program." He also created and produced such TV shows as "I Spy," "The Andy Griffith Show" and "My World and Welcome To It."

"Son of Monte Cristo" is a swashbuckler of the old school variety. A charming leading man, great scenery and costuming, suspense, plenty of action and a happy ending make for satisfying fare. TV's "Lone Ranger," Clayton Moore, appears here in a brief balcony scene.

"The Scarlet Letter" is a book worth reading. The 1934 movie is a close transcription of that book. Its only flaw occurs when the minister reveals his dark secret in front of his congregation. A rushed delivery and poor build-up weakens somewhat the overall impact of this climactic moment. Other than this, it's a decent film.

KIDS' FAVORITE ADVENTURE MOVIES is a somewhat larger collection of similar family fare. This nice box set has literary classics ("Heidi," "Alice in Wonderland" and "Jungle Book"), fun westerns (two "Over-the-Hill Gang" movies) and seven stranded castaways finally getting rescued from GILLIGAN'S ISLAND!

Lousy picture quality.......2004-05-10

I don't know what the last poster was thinking... This DVD goes to the top of my worst quality list. I wouldn't complain as much but they are advertized as "Digitally Remastered," which is obviously meaningless. "Long John Silver" is soft-focus, borderline blurry, throughout; marred with constant flecks and blobs; and has countless vertical scratches that score the full image. It's like watching some old home movie you found in a trunk. Haven't viewed "Captain Kidd," but a cursory scan indicated it too is in poor condition. If that's the best the films come, and there's no money for clean-up, so be it. But get that misleading "Digitally Remastered" off the box. That's a hoodwink if ever there was one.

Pirates! on DVD.......2001-03-06

This DVD Double feature cost me ... and was worth every penny. Long John Silver (1955) and Captain Kidd (1945) Two films I had never seen before but always wanted to. With Marengo Films putting 2 movies on every DVD they release it's a good bargin! The films look very clean and the sound is great. Can't wait to see what else these guys come up with...
