3 out of 5 stars Jigsaw is an interesting film.......2006-02-04

This movie is a film noir classic It concerns a quest to find out who is behind a hate group which is run by murderers and power mongers. Franchot Tone is the Assistant District Attorney and Special Prosecutor who must do battle with these forces of evil.

The tone is dead serious about the dangers of prejudice and hate. There are some comments about the need for tolerance and understanding. Similar in a way to movies of the time, like "Crossfire" and "Home of the Brave", Jigsaw is an interesting movie. There are many twists and turns in the plot and the acting is good.

Winifred Lenihan (in her only movie performance) shines, as does Jean Wallace as the femme fatale. The print is murky, but the photography is good, with some unusual close-ups.

Jigsaw has a special treat for movie fans. There are cameos from Burgess Meredith, Henry Fonda, John Garfield, Marsha Hunt and Marlene Dietrich. They are lending themselves to the cause of anti-fascism, but they do it in a humorous way. Some of them mug towards the camera and it is fun to try to identify them. Jigsaw is a film noir with a different slant.

3 out of 5 stars Pieces missing.......2004-11-22

JIGSAW has just enough going for it to merit recommendation, with emphasis on the word `just.' It's a ramshackle story of an assistant New York City district attorney (Franchot Tone) who's hot on the trail of the shadowy racist hate group, the Crusaders.
With low-key photography and acting, JIGSAW has a naturalistic look and feel to it. It's one of those late 40's gray city movies that included scenes taking place in real locations - real dirty city streets with real cats rummaging through overflowing trash cans.
There's a mystery behind the confused mystery the movie presents. While Tone's character is investigating what was then a stereotypical Communist group, JIGSAW includes a number of cameos by prominent stars, many of who were targeted by the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) as belonging to subversive organizations prior to World War II. It was a time of loyalty oaths and black-listings, so perhaps the cameo stars appeared to indicate their opposition to such organizations as the Crusaders. Two of the cameo stars belonged to the Committee for the First Amendment, which publicly called for the abolishment of HUAC, so perhaps the "harmless lunatics" who support mob-run rackets like the Crusaders aren't Trotskyites after all. Considering the political manipulations this movie exposes, you might even interpret the Crusaders as a front for a HUAC-like politician.
Such is the sea this movie swims in. There's the Good Girl brunette and the Bad Girl Blonde, the political fixer and the exasperated boss. Standard stuff ably handled and nicely photographed. I won't spoil the surprise by naming any of the cameo stars, but the first one appears about 15 minutes into the movie.

    2 out of 5 stars A Bit Disappointed.......2006-02-24

As a lover of horror movies, I purchased this movie expecting more and expecting gore. Although some scenes were cool, overall this movie was boring at times and there was poor acting. College students are asked to put together a mannequin which they called Jigsaw. After burning Jigsaw, he comes to life and starts killing them off one by one. A few good killing scenes but overall, a disappointing movie. Rent it, don't buy it!

4 out of 5 stars DON'T PUT ON THAT FINISHING TOUCH!.......2005-12-18

GOODIES FROM FULL-MOON JUST KEEP 'A' COMIN! THIS ONE IS ABOUT A COUPLE OF TEENS WHO ARE ASKED TO PUT TOGETHER A FIGURINE FOR AN EXPEIRIMENT SEVERAL OF THEM DECIDE...WELL I'M JUST GOING TO BE STUPID & PUT TOGETHER A KILL-BOT AND NOT EVEN THROW IN A REMOTE CONTOL,CAUSE I'M A HEATHEN! SO THEY CRAFT & DESIGHN A DROID NAMED JIG-SAW THEN HE GETS HAYWIRED(GET-IT)& KILLS PEOPLE! THE ENTIRE REASON I'VE GIVEN IT 4 STARS IS CAUSE YOU DON'T USUALLY PUT TOGETHER JUNK PEICES AND SEE THEM ACTUALLY COME TO LIFE!

4 out of 5 stars Bizarre, but fairly good.......2005-09-10

As a class assignment, some college students are each given a piece of a mannequin which they are to decorate with something personal, or that at least says something about them. Then it is reassembled and they tell the stories behind what they did. This is done at a bar as everyone is getting very drunk. The stories turn out to be rather interesting. It could have easily slipped into melodrama, but it manages to instead be quite dramatic. Anyhow, the mannequin comes to life and begins stalking and killing them.

The characters really make this movie, they are very realistic and, with the exception of the uber-obnoxious ingrate, they manage to be rather sympathetic. The action (killings) are rather uninteresting, as there is little suspense and no gore. However, the Tawny character is absolutely fabulous to look at, she does an extremely sleazy dance at the bar, and then strips to her undies for a few minutes. Her character is also really screwed up, real Jerry Springer show material, but still she's interesting and realistic. There's also another girl in a tube top that leaves absolutely nothing to the imagination. And the main heroine gets stripped to her undies at the end. I call that good film making.

As a bonus, you get the movie Totem on this disk as well (at least it was on my copy). It's a slow moving, zero budget horror movie about 6 teenagers who are mysteriously drawn to a cabin out in the woods. There are some demon dolls involved that want 3 of the kids to kill the other 3 so that they may bring the dead back to life and perhaps take over the world or something. It manages to be vaguely entertaining. There's also a commentary track for Jigsaw. I only listened to the first few minutes of it, and rather bizarrely they seem to have every gaffer, best boy and perhaps even the caterer on the track. I'm looking forward to giving it a listen at some later date.

5 out of 5 stars Art class hell at Stinky Pete's.......2004-12-27

Well here's an indie horror film that's better than most. A creepy art teacher comes up with a strange project for his students. They are each to take a mannequin part, decorate it, and bring it in the following week. But class is going at night in the Stinky Pete's bar. A drinking game is involved putting 'Jigsaw' back together.

After the grotesque thing is put together (complete with saw blades, sawed off shotguns, Roman candles, and newspaper clippings) it is to be burned. Well of course it comes to life. It now kills off it's creators taking a body part from each.

Aimee Bravo as Tawny is the highliught of this film. No nude scenes, but she is so hot I swore she was Daizee Kellogg from BustyAmateurs.com. I had to read the credits to find out who she was. She dances in the bar, tells her classmates a heartbreaking story, and spends a good amount of time in a blue bra and [...]. Well the shotgun shell with her name on it does her in and she doesn't leave her sister behind after-all.

Another dude gets strangled with barbed-wire. A girl gets killed in her husbands tractor-trailer. The rig driver gets sawed up along with another kid who tries to escape in a car. Thatleaves the professor and one female student (Stinky Pete had a heart attack).

So he knocks her unconscious, strips her to her underwear, and ties her down with Christmas lights (that'll teach her to resist his advances). The professor thinks that Jigsaw just needs one more part, a head. So he's willing to sacrifice his student's life to save his own. Jigsaw comes in and sees her.

I'll let you see the ending yourself.

Unfortunately the film ends suddenly with the last killing. We never see what Jigsaw does with the parts. The film is short at an hour and fifteen minutes. Too bad we didn't get 15 additional minutes to see the result of Jigsaw's handiwork. But hey, at least the bad guy finally wins one.

1 out of 5 stars This was the complete suck.......2004-10-12

I watch a lot of horror B movies, this was probably the worst one. The only good part in the movie was when they were showing shots from that other movie when the bartender was chilling out and eating a sandwich. "Die, evil sorceror." yeah that was the only cool part. No boobies= not a good movie. This was a poor piece of garbage, don't ever buy it. The 10 bucks that was spent on it was only good for the other trailers on it. That's it. It sucks. Period ----> .

5 out of 5 stars Low budget, but high entertainment!.......2003-05-08

I really enjoyed this movie. The girls were hot. The story was interesting. The students of a college class puts together "Jigsaw," a mannequin that comes to life, and hacks them up to pieces. This isn't Shakespear. It's better!

    1 out of 5 stars horrendous.......2003-04-20

who cares if the actors are "fun"! the movie was absolutely horrible. and of course what do you come to expect from full moon pictures though? really not much! almost the whole movie takes place around a bar, eww how exciting, no its really not exciting. even though the concept seemed like it was going to be interesting the dialogue and story was poorly written so not much here except disappointment. very boring flick. wouldn't recommend this movie to my worst enemy.

    5 out of 5 stars I love this movie. it's so cool.......2003-02-04

Jigsaw is one of the coolest psychological thrillers ever. Most people will call it a horror movie, but it's more than that. It's not just a monster hacking away at horny teenagers. You get to know the characters very well and you actually care for most of them. I was at the world premeier and met all the actors. it was fun. I highly recomend you guys buy this movie. it rocks! Even though the horror and scary stuff dosn't happen until the last 35 minutes, it's still really good. The first half is also interesting. It explains the characters backrounds and such before they are set to slaughter, it's actually kind of intersting. My favorite character was Tawny, she was the cutest and the best. I hope she becomes famous one day.

          5 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise.......2006-07-03

very few plan As work out

Plan B is hardly the end and can be richly satisfying on its own.
A wonderful hopeful film- truly enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars One of my favorite movies..........2005-11-25

I'm not a real Jon Cryer fan, though i usually like the characters he plays. Too bad this one panned in theaters...it's a gem.
Writing was fantastic...lots of zingers and one-liners i still use in everyday life.

          LOVE the Thanksgiving scene where after everyone has gathered at Clare & Jacks - only to find them (by looking thru the window), in the back bedroom...and 'boyfriend' Flash says;
"Is this Thanksgiving tradition in your country?"
"Not at MY house, it isn't."

Maybe it's just my odd sense of humour, but i love this movie! Only wish it would be pressed onto DVD sometime soon...my VHS is gonna scrape off all the oxide from my tape before long!!!

          5 out of 5 stars A message with humor & optimism if life's Plan A would fail........1999-10-13

Great casting, nice characters, and clever writing. You'll love every minutes of it. The music will put smile on your face.(is there a CD out there?)

          5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......1999-08-05

It reminded me of pictures made 4 decades ago. Sincere, meaningful and a pleasure to watch. Exited the theater with a glow.

2 out of 5 stars Silly, Shallow, and Weak Plot.......2006-01-15

I idly watched this atrocious peice of trash one day for lack of things to do. I thought I'd just watch a sweet unicorn film. Unfortunately, I had to watch this bizzare interpretation of "the mystical bond between unicorn and girl". The unicorn foal resembled a cross between a neopet and a Barbie horse; why did they make it a cartoon? I must admit, the adult unicorn was rather impressive, but the rest was ridiculous. The little girl, Polly, was a flat, one-sided character with absolutely no character, and the so-called "villains" were a bunch of pathetic no-hopers; I think the main point of those characters was to provide crude humor to younger children. It didn't really work, though. Then there was a big debate over why the little girl should go to boarding school. I think this was the script writer's way of mixing in another hurdle for Polly to overcome. It was pointless, though. Overall this was a corny attempt to make a classic that really did not work. Only reccomended to children five and under, who only understand how pretty the unicorn is.

2 out of 5 stars All Show, No Depth.......2006-01-13

Ever since I was little, I have absolutely loved unicorns. When I saw this DVD advertised here on Amazon, I looked into it and found what looked like a good movie with an interesting plot. The story revolves around a little girl, Polly, whose old mare gives birth to a unicorn foal before dying. Polly soon comes to love the foal, of course, and pretty soon her love and loyalty are tested when a bunch of greedy circus people attempt to steal the unicorn for publicity purposes. I decided to give the movie the benefit of the doubt and bought it sight unseen. Sadly, this was a mistake.

I guess I should have paid more attention to the negative reviews, because corniness was only one of this movie's faults. For starters, the depth of the story I had hoped for simply isn't there; the movie's tone is so completely juvenile, I expect only really small children would appreciate it. You may very well think,"Well, of COURSE it's juvenile; it's a kid's movie!" It's been my experience, however, that a really good children's movie will move adults as well. Such classics as, "Narnia", "The Secret Garden", "A Little Princess", and the wonderful "Harry Potter" series are all stories that, while often marketed as being for kids, have proven to affect adults as much as children (if not more so).

The characters in this movie are not in the least memorable and not very believable as people. The "heroine" annoyed me instead of rousing my sympathy, and the so-called villains seemed to be nothing more than morons who were placed in the story to be made fools of. The leader of the circus was a greedy jerk, but there's not much more to be said for his character as far as affectiveness goes. The rest of the "bad guys" were embarassingly stupid. Trust me, Joe Pesci was more terrifying in the "Home Alone" series than these guys. The only faintly good point of the film was the unicorn, although he certainly couldn't save the film all by himself. Even he, however, had a few downfalls. As an adult, the unicorn is realistically played by a real horse, with a gorgeous glowing effect that magnifies his magical appearance. When he first appears as a foal, however, he is not played by a real horse but created with the most pathetic animation I've ever seen. The flying scenes were awkward as well and somewhat took away from the magical effect of the unicorn. The ending of the movie was abrupt and rather awkward, trying to patch a bunch of different resolutions together in one scene (more than one character had some sort of dilemma going on).

All together, this film tried to be moving but came off as a bad caricature of a moving film rather than the real thing. You may think I'm being too harsh since it is, after all, just a kid's film. However, if this is what's considered the ideal children's film, then I strongly believe that children are not being given enough credit. Children are multi-dimensional in many ways and a movie should not be dumbed down in order to impress them. I certainly don't think this film is harmful to kids-it probably won't affect them much at all if they're over four-but I would say it's totally unnecessary for their intellectual development. I guess it depends on what you're looking for; if you want a film that effectively teaches morals, I recommend you look elsewhere (check out the movies I listed earlier). On the other hand, if you'd like a film that resembles a circus-pretty good entertainment, nice special effects, and no depth whatsoever-you might very well prefer this one.

4 out of 5 stars Not corny but an allegory.......2005-01-25

If your child is learning about allegories, this is a good illustration. Polly learns that her mare is dying in birth and prays for help to the unicorn that guards horses in horse heaven. A male unicorn is born; when Polly hugs it, her scraped knee is healed. The unicorn is the focus of three groups of criminals who want to steal it. A particularly cruel circus master wants the unicorn to do tricks in his circus. He puts the unicorn on display in his circus, whips it and tortures it to do what he wants. Polly and her friend rescue the unicorn. In the end she sets it free, where it flies into the sky and disappears, releasing its magic over the earth. The animation of the just-born unicorn foal soon after the story starts is awkward, and my eight-year old was disappointed. But when the movie switched to a real horse "actor", graphically enhanced as a unicorn, she was entranced. There's slapstick with the devious horse-nappers that is out-of-sync with the rest of the story, but kids don't seem to notice this jarring switch.

2 out of 5 stars Not bad for little kids, but it's very derivative .......2005-01-01

E.T. and Elliott ride across the moon... Oh, wait. This corny unicorn flick is just a rip-off of that children's classic. The "E.T." is a mythical one-horned horse named Spike, and "Elliott" is a little girl named Polly (Brittney Bomann). When Polly's mare foals Spike, she is desperate to shield him from covetous eyes but before long a nosy reporter finds out about the magical beast and it's a chase that goes into the very sky.

3 out of 5 stars Took a Risk, wasnt dissapointed.......2002-11-16

I took a risk on this one, I love unicorns, and i should not have gotten this but i did...And it was a GOOD CHOICE. Although a little too young for me, it was great for my little cousing (11 years old) she liked it. It is a story of a girl that wishes for a unicorn when her favorite mare is pregnant and the mare gives birth to one. They try to keep it a secret, but that proves more difficult than they expected. Great for children and unicorn lovers. The unicorn is cute although a little odd looking...great glowing effect on its entire body!
