Few American movies have dealt as graphically with nuclear holocaust as The Day After, which accounted for the controversy that surrounded the telefilm at the time of its initial network broadcast. In previous films, nuclear warfare was a matter for crusading politicians or military might, but here, both are kept in the background (the airman played by William Allen Young is more concerned with returning to his new wife than his duties) and the focus is fixed firmly on middle America--literally so, as the setting is Lawrence, Kansas, the near-center of the country. Audiences are briefly introduced to a representative cross-section of American life, including a doctor (Jason Robards), a young bride-to-be (Lori Lethin), a graduate student (Steve Guttenberg), and an academic (John Lithgow), before the Bomb hits nearby Kansas City. The ensuing destruction is utterly horrific, but a few manage to survive to struggle vainly with rising radiation levels and the slow, inevitable collapse of society. As a protest vehicle, The Day After is a triumph--its scenes of nuclear devastation remain the most powerful statements against nuclear armament ever depicted. It's buoyed by strong direction from Nicholas Meyer, who previously specialized in fantasy (Time After Time), and a capable cast who weather the material with grim determination. Edward Hume's script occasionally stumbles into sudsy territory, but the end result compares with equally moving British efforts like The War Game and Threads. The original network broadcast ran 120 minutes (edited from three hours); this is the 126-minute European theatrical cut. --Paul Gaita

4 out of 5 stars Relentlessly depressing, but should be seen anyhow.......2007-09-08

At the end of this movie, you'll look up and your first thought will be "Thank God, it's all still here." I was a teenager in the 80's when I saw this on TV and it has always stayed with me.

I love just about anything from the 1980's now and regularly pull out movies from that era- but this is one I just can't see again. However, I'd recommend it to everyone anyhow, to see once. It personalizes the results of nuclear conflict in a way no other movie did before or since.

Funny thing is, the world today feels like it was safer back then, when we were fairly sure that nuclear weapons were only in the hands of (relatively) rational human beings instead of lunatic terrorists.

4 out of 5 stars Cheesy but still pretty good.......2007-08-12

Yes, some cheesy acting here and there, some melodrama and so forth. But it was an 80s telemovie, so what more could one expect? Okay, to be fair, the portrayal of nuclear devastation and the resulting radiation poisoning is quite good. And to know that almost everyone is doomed is a sobering thought to ponder at the end, after viewing the final scene of two strangers trying to comfort each other in the aftermath of the holocaust.

3 out of 5 stars If the bombs don't kill you, the acting will.......2007-07-22

"The Day After" was one of a series of films made in the 1980's. Of these, only "Testament" could be called a success. The films were part of a massive campaign by the USSR and Western leftists to keep ground-based nukes from Western Europe. The CSPI (Center for Science in the Public Interest), a "disinterested" group that hilariously declared itself non-partisan, led the charge with graphic descriptions of nuclear winter or worse. After deployment and the subsequent collapse of the Soviet Union, the subject was never broached. The hype was huge - psychiatrists and child psychologists were ready to help grieving students who happened to watch the show, the papers played it big, the media gave it all the free publicity you could want...and it was still an artistic blunder.

Besidess blocking the weapons (not necessarily a bad thing), the movie had two purposes: (1) Visualzie the horrible affects of a nuclear war and just as important (2) make the Soviet Empire and the West morally equivalent - no good or bad guys - just "big guys" and "little guys" I'd expected a powerful, thought-provoking show but instead got a disaster on all fronts (artistic, political and military). The dialogue was possibly the most stilted and amateurish ever presented on screen. It sounded like a high school play at times - awkward & hesitant. Husbands and wives spoke like strangers, family talk was from Ozzie & Harriet, a 6th grader asks, "Daddy, whut's radiation?" Folks on the brink of starvation resist the only method for replanting crops. No one has heard of an EMP and (you have to smile) when it hits, EVERYONE stays in their car trying to start the engines, oblivious to the zillion others around them with the same problem. Politically it's a phony Kumbaya Moment. In crimson Kansas folks greet the Soviet closure of West Berlin with a shrug - no expressions of outrage. At the end, the President (read Reagan) gives a ridiculously upbeat speech - we have not surrendedred and he invokes God and patriotism. All the while, victims moan and the camera shows devastation. Apparently the purpose of the awful dialogue was to make folks sound like "simple folk" who loved mom, pop, God & corn. Although set in the 80's, the viewer for some reason kept getting glimpses of what looked like film from the 1950's.

It is the acting that really "bombed". Poor Jason Robards comes in for the most criticism. Unlike everyone else, his clothes stay clean and fresh. He appears drunk or doped during the entire film, stumbling and slurring his way through the most unlikely of circumstances. It's as if the writers tried to substitue incoherence and mangled steps for serious lines. Amy Madigan is present as a pregnant woman and whines as usual. Steve Gutenburg is a student with embarrasingly poor lines. John Lithgow plays an exasperated know-it-all. The extras hired to portray victims never spoke a word - did the bomb suddenly remove the gift of speech? Emotions were surface - you feel as if the actor could just as easily cry as laugh. The chemistry between the romantic couples was about as heated as a male model and a beauty queen.

This is too bad because the few good scenes were very affective - the harried soldiers, the moment the bomb hit, the panorama of utter destruction and that final tragedy when student met the daughter and both had lost their hair. For obvious reasons, the start of the war was obscure - after all, who cares about blame in such a catastrophe? Who attacked first, who initiated the first nuclear strike, why did the USSR block Berlin in the first place? I kept waiting to see the rest of the world but that would have entailed creativity and another story. In this case the writers were inadvertently correct to focus on this locality. The outside world is a mysterious unknown, like Medieval times when one only knew the village in which they were born and died. The film was promptly criticized by Sagan (CSPI) as too "optimistic". You can't please all the folks all the time, I guess. My grade - C-

5 out of 5 stars Frightening Thought.......2007-06-11

Hello. I remember all the "buzz" about this show when it first appeared on television in 1983. At the time, I was prolly at work and also didn't have a VCR then. Now that I have seen it in its entirety, it is an absolutely frightening experience. Now, the dangers of nuclear war are more relevant: India and Pakistan have it... North Korea has it...Iran it trying to get it... Israel has it... the list goes on... The acting in "The Day After" is awesome. Jason Robards is amazing. I was pleasantly surprised by Steven Guttenberg. He's known mainly for those "Police Academy" movies, but he gave an fantastic performance. That sequence where you first see several closeup shots of the Kansas City skyline is ominous, because you kind of have an idea of what will happen next. I can see "The Day After" being remade, to take advantage of our modern technological advances. All in all, the film serves as a reminder that there will never be any winners in a nuclear conflict.

5 out of 5 stars A wickedly entertaining 80's propaganda film.......2007-05-22

Just happening to catch this little gem from the 80's recently on cable, all the memories flood back from the original airing on ABC when I thought: "So, what's the big deal?!".

Having known someone who saw the film in a preview in Lawrence, KS and having been told about the people in the audience sobbing hysterically, I was expecting so much more that I got when I finally had the opportunity to see it for myself. It is only the context of history that now lays bare the hilariously tacky overacting and absurdly ridiculous plot that obliterates Kansas City, but spares the ICBM fields from any strikes, which in reality would have been the converse (in other words-Buh Bye, Lawrence). Not to mention the embrace of the idea of a local skirmish culminating in a 'bolt from the blue' nuclear attack on the US.

All the bunny huggin' liberals writing the glowing reviews of this film also bring me back to the 80's, when the very same no-nukes crowd went absolutely crazy during Reagan's brinksmanship with the (now FORMER) USSR.

This is a quite dramatic, and suspenseful film nonetheless, but to me represents the zenith of the 80's anti-nuclear movement with a masterfully executed attempt at affecting public opinion through production of a straight propaganda piece. Contextually, a great historical snapshot of the opposing side of the strident debate about deployment of the Pershing II in Europe, the MX missle, the 'leaked' planning studies for the aftermath of WWIII, and Reagan's hardline position against the Soviets, all of which scared the bejesus out of the aforementioned bunny huggers.

Of course, with twenty years now in the rearview mirror, the USSR fallen, Reagan vindicated, and after a massive nuclear build-down, it only serves as punctuation to this film, a nice little postscript of historical perspective to complete the circle begun in 1983.

Highly recommended.

There seemed to be a particular spike in nuclear-war paranoia in the early 1980s, probably having to do Reagan's finger being on the trigger. Whatever the cause, it resulted in two particularly powerful 1983 films on the subject: the made-for-TV The Day After and Lynne Littman's Testament, which had a theatrical release before playing on PBS's American Playhouse. Starring Jane Alexander (and Kevin Costner in a cameo), the film shows what happens to a suburban family in the Pacific Northwest after a nearby nuclear attack. As it turns out, those killed by the initial blast are the lucky ones; Alexander and her family must suffer through radiation poisoning and sickness, the daily diminution of life this causes, and, for Alexander, the eventual deaths of those around her. Quietly powerful and never overstated. --Marshall Fine

Description

In TESTAMENT, an unexpected nuclear strike has occurred and no one knows who did it or why it happened. With her husband away on business, and now unable to be reached, Carol Weatherly must remain strong for the sake of her children. Things take a turn for the worse once food and other supplies become scarce. . The film is directed by Lynn Littman.

5 out of 5 stars Still frightening, sad, and indelible.......2007-08-31

It may have been made in 1983, but this film is still just as frightening, sad, and indelible as it was back then. Jane Alexander gives a powerful performance as a mother who must slowly watch her kids die after nuclear bombs spread radiation everywhere and poison the population. Watching the schoolchildren perform a play, a kid take piano lessons, and a man looking for a tiny coffin for his dead baby daughter...Very hard to take, but makes you think long and hard about the nuclear proliferation and scenario.
The image of the mother bathing her youngest son, who is bleeding internally and dying, is unforgettable.

5 out of 5 stars "This is San Francisco, we have lost our New York signal...".......2007-07-17

So says the TV broadcaster, who suddenly and jarringly appears on the television screen, after a PBS Children's show that was being aired disappears into snow, one sunny afternoon that the Wetherly family is watching while doing various activities; the daughter practicing the piano, the two brothers squabbling over the TV reception and antenna, and Mom (played by Jane Alexander) listening to telephone messages, when they learn that their world is about to abruptly change. The TV broadcaster goes on to say that "radar sources confirm the explosion of nuclear devices in New York and up and down the East Coast. "Ladies and Gentleman", the TV broadcaster continues, "this is real this is not" when he is interrupted and cut out by the Emergency Broadcasting System.

I saw Testament when it aired on PBS in the early 1980's and it still is one of the most powerful and moving films I have ever seen. For days afterward, I had this melancholy feeling that would not go away.

Testament is a quiet and dignified film about a family living in a town near San Francisco in the aftermath of an unexplained nuclear attack on the United States (I'm assuming by the former Soviet Union). There are no depictions of the nuclear attack other than a flash of light in the film. Nor is any explanation given on the reason why there was a nuclear attack. You do find out in the film from the town's Ham radio operator, that the the entire San Francisco Bay area is out, up north (Portland, OR?, Seattle, WA? Canada?)are ok, and that there is no communication east of the Mississippi River.

Needless to say there isn't a happy ending, but the film does end on a somewhat hopeful note. I also found the film score to be haunting, especially so, as the movie ends with it playing while a Wetherly family home movie is being played of the husband/father's (played by William Devane) birthday party.

Be sure to look for Kevin Costner's and Rebecca De Mornay's cameo roles. Also, the town's elderly and WWII veteran ham radio operator was played by Leon Ames who was the father in the movies "Meet me in St. Louis" and "By the light of the Silvery Moon".

Please read the other reviews for a more detailed description.

Deserves to be seen by everyone.

2 out of 5 stars Way Over Rated by Amazon Reviewers.......2007-07-17

I bought this DVD based on all the positive reviews, and boy was I disappointed! The story goes nowhere, the kids are whiney brats, and believe me, you'll be GLAD the Dad is only in the first few minutes of the movie. Yes, the mother character is well acted by Jane Alexander, but the dialogue is lame, the plot is dead, the scenes are choppy, the events are predictable, the townspeople are annoying, and there's a lot of crying. A lot. I'd give it one star just to drop this over-inflated 4 1/2 star rating, but thought 2 stars was more honest.

5 out of 5 stars No hype and all truth ............2007-06-14

Unlike The Day After and On the Beach, Testament focuses mainly upon how one family (one mother of three, more precisely) lives day by day after a nuclear war. What I liked about this movie particularly is its complete lack of hype and its quietly downplayed mood.

If you've seen the other two, this one is also a must see. If you see this one, the other two are also must sees. :-)

5 out of 5 stars Very powerful, touching movie.......2007-05-09

I first saw this movie on cable in the late 80's and was very touched and moved by it. It has lost none of it's potency to date. Jane Alexander is outstanding as a mother trying to keep her family together and survive the worst horror that could ever happen. What is surprising is the subtle and excellent performances by the kids. I would highly recommend this movie.

3 out of 5 stars Ok DVD .......2007-04-30

Super Crazy vs Psychosis- It's a ok match. Both of them are great luchadors and always put on a good show. It wasn't one of there best matches but because they are both very talented it was ok. Yet at the end Super crazy goes to use a knife on Psychosis and its censored?! Its an XPW hardcore DVD why would it be censored? Grade C

Supreme vs Alterboy Luke- Wow great hardcore match. I was shocked, I assumed it would be a classic squash match, since Luke looked out of his league. Luke hit Supreme with everything he had but the monster took control. Light tubes, tables, and thumbtacks where used, and we saw an amazing finish. Grade B+

Danny Doring vs Kaos- One of the longer, solid wrestling match. It was amazing to see Danny Doring actually winning. Some solid impact moves, and great mat wrestling. GQ Money takes a wicked shot on the guardrail. Grade C +

Shane Douglas vs Chris Candido- Douglas started out with a great promo. Candido came in and cut an ok promo. Douglas had a cast on which I am sure affected him. Candido was just coming back from an injury and some drug related problems. Both looked very off for a lot of moves. The match went slowly and boring and the fans where not in it at all. Grade D

            Extras

Sandman vs Pogo the clown- Solid match, lots of brawling between the monster and the Sandman. It was going so well but they cut it a bit short. The ending was fantastic. Grade C+

Juventud Guerrera vs Julio Dinero- Juicy talks forever before the match. Juicy seems to be on drugs again before his match. Great match! Both of them put on a fantastic show. I dodnt like that Juicy didn't sell some huge moves Dinero hit. Grade B+

Mexico's Most Wanted vs Dead prez- Another solid but not spectacular match. Dead Prez made a good showing for there first match. MMW looked good as always, yet I have seen them do better. Its always great to see there finisher. Grade B

Overall Grade C+ Overall the DVD was about 1 hour and 30 minutes long. It was a shame it was so short, a few of the matches could have used a bit more time. Most matches where solid, but we missed an amazing A match. It only cost $5 so it was like it was a waste of money, yet I have seen them do better.

            3 out of 5 stars O.K. DVD.......2006-08-22

This event took place Oct. 5, 2002 in between Hostile Takeover and Exit Sandman. It has seven matches altogether.Four are regular matches, and three are bonus matches. The first match was a rematch between Super Crazy and Psichosis, from Hostile Takeover. The second regular match was a deathmatch title bout between Supreme and Alterboy Luke. Supreme had to take on both Alterboy Luke and Angel, after Angel ran in, and lost the title. This led to the three-way bout between those men in Exit Sandman. The third regular match was between Kaos and Danny Doring. Danny Doring won but it was a non-title match. The fourth regular match was a world title match between Shane Douglas and Chris Candido. The fifth match was a bonus match between Pogo and Sandman. The sixth match was between Juventude Guerrero and Julio Dinero. The last match was an open challenge match from Mexico's Most Wanted and was answered by a new mistery team called Dead Prez. This event happened in Viking Hall, Philadelphia Pa.
