Director Lawrence Kasdan (The Big Chill) clearly set out to make an old-fashioned Western, but he couldn't help bringing a hip, self-conscious attitude to the proceedings. Silverado thus finds its own funky tone--sometimes rousing, sometimes winking. Four cowpokes converge on a little Western burg called Silverado; they're played by Kevin Kline (a distinctly modern kind of Western hero), Scott Glenn, Danny Glover, and the rowdy young Kevin Costner. Kasdan peppers the somewhat generic action with smart dialogue and a parade of quirky supporting players, including John Cleese as a sheriff who seems to have stepped straight from a Monty Python sketch into an Old West saloon. Bruce Broughton supplies the music, a real throwback to the glory days of thundering Western themes. One thing's for sure: Silverado's a lot more fun than the later Kasdan-Costner Western, Wyatt Earp. --Robert Horton

A good western, and yet. For one it is slightly too slow at times. That makes the film a little bit lengthy and that is not good in a western that must have a constant rhythm and when it slows down it is to create suspense in a situation that requires it. Here we have slow scenes that are not in anyway suspenseful. The second reason is that this film has little originality. It is a clear assemblage or patchwork of many references and borrowings from all the previous westerns ever made. And it is very difficult to invent anything in 1985 after also the Morricone and Clint Eastwood films, not to speak of the black and white TV series mile Dead or Alive. It is entertaining because of the way things are assembled and that is nearly all. Two elements create some perspective. First the presence of black settlers that reveal the strong racist trend in the West. Then the character of Stella, a midget saloon manageress. But apart from these two elements the rest is pretty standard. But I must admit the setting, the scenery is particularly beautiful. Some of the mountain and desert scenes are in gorgeous natural surroundings. Then the theme of the rotten sheriff (two in the film mind you, one rotten by authority and the other rotten by the local rancher) and the theme of the rancher who decides to push away, and kill if necessary, the farmers are very ordinary and common place, and once again nothing new is really added to the theme. All these borrowing, even in 1985, make the film systematically anaphoric and that is a shortcoming. Even the street duel is banal: check in Back to the Future III, the "character" of Clint Eastwood makes that anaphoric reference a lot more creative. Not here.

5 out of 5 stars Worth many looks.......2007-05-14

Having grow up in the 40's & 50's, I love a good western. (even some bad ones)
But "Silverado" is right up there with the good ones.
Great cast, interesting storyline and the necessary good triumphs over evil ending.
Brian Dennehy is the perfect villain, while Kevin Kline the unexpected hero.
The rest of the cast including Scott Glenn, Kevin Costner and Jeff Goldblum keep this film moving. Never a dull moment!
Love watching it as I do many other horse operas.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Exciting Western, With A Great Cast.......2007-01-31

This was a great Western. Very creative and adventerous, and a wonderful cast. Where else would you see a Monty Python alum as a sheriff in a Western?

This movie featured three of my favorite actors: Scott Glenn, Brian Dennehy, and Jeff Goldblum. It also featured one of my favorite actresses, Rosanna Arquette, though she had such a small role even the worst actress couldn't mess that role up. Kevin Costner had a youthful exhuberance that I hadn't seen since from him. And I'm just mentioning my favorites.

I'll stop before I spoil any surprises. If you want a classic western, this is one.

4 out of 5 stars A film that hit me very hard.......2006-09-12

Now the movie starts out with Chen Sing challenging a man who beat him in a duel some years ago. The man ends up fighting him and gets fatally injured. His son being about 15 or 16 years old picks up a couple of sai's and fights with Chen Sing. Not able to beat him and with nowhere to go now that his dad is dead, Chen says that he can travel with him and he will train the boy also so that when he is strong enough, he can take revenge against Chen. Weird concept? Not to me, I thought it was beautiful. This movie has stuck with me forever and oh yeah, the kung fu is REALLY good. Hwang Jang Lee and Lo Lieh as the bad guys, Doris Lung, Corey Yuen, and Yuen Biao as Hwang's 3 grandchildren, and opf course the great Chen Sing as the hero of the movie. Then the kid who he trains(and is constantly trying to muder Chen) is a really good fighter too and he really gets to show off with Hwang Jang Lee. I won't give away anything about the story but it is only so so. The real reason to watch this movie is for the southern fist vs. northern leg fights, the kid fights, and of course the theme of honor which has stuck with me forever. The movie is directed by William Chang who in recent years has been involved with movies like Zu Warriors, Chungking Express, The Blade, Ashes of Time, 2046, In the Mood For Love, and Dragon Tiger Gate Inn.

This 'Black Dragon Collection' version does have a minor cut. It is a part where Chen Sing is trying to teach the boy to have no feelings. He ends up getting really mad and throws the dog up against the wall and killing it. I can understand why they didn't show this. So if youare watching and think you missed something, you did, and now you know. The 50 pack that 'Tree Line Films' released has the uncut version. I still get tears welling up in my eyes when I think about this movie.

"Kill me at any time".

4 out of 5 stars A Solid Kung Fu Gem.......2005-08-28

I bought this movie mainly because of its stars Lo Leih and Hwang Jang-Lee who are in my opinion the greatest villians in classic kungfu cinema. The story is ok as Tu Ta-Shin(Chen Sing) plays the lead role and Hwang Jang-Lee(Nan Pa-Ting) plays the main villian. Tu Ta-Shin is actually a anti-hero as he "kills" the young boy's father in the beginning and takes the boy with him, only to train him allowing him to challenge him at any time. He does however grant the fathers last wish to kill the traitor Nan Pa-Ting. It has nice choreographed action scenes and the story is fairly easy to follow. I gave this movie 4 out of 5 stars because though its is good, the lead villians have had better roles,(see Born Invincible for Lo Leih and Hells Windstaff for Hwang Jang-Lee) and I also thought the little kids role was almost not even necessary for the story. If you like old school kungfu it is a must see.

3 out of 5 stars A pretty good flick, but it's been EDITED!.......2005-06-12

This is a pretty good movie featuring the powerful Chen Sing and the great kicker Hwang Jang Lee. It also features the lovely Doris Lung, and the main kid is pretty acrobatic (he's also in DEATH DUEL OF MANTIS and CRANE FIGHTER). With a cameo appearance and action choreography by Yuen Biao it's hard to go wrong, but this dvd version cuts out a key sequence. The missing footage has the kid playing with a puppy in a cave while Chen Sing is sitting by the fire. Chen Sing all of a sudden takes the puppy from the kid and smashes it to the ground killing it and saying "In revenge, there's no room for kindness." This infuriates the kid who then lunges at Chen Sing and they start fighting. This dvd version simply shows the boy petting the dog, then putting it down (cutting out the fact that the dog's now dead) and then cuts to the boy lunging at Chen without the puppy's death as his main motivation. It's a minor cut in amount of time, but it was one of the most memorable moments in the film when I first saw it back in the 1980s and one that I clearly remember to this day. One other aspect I didn't remember, or at least didn't notice at the time, was how much undercranking (speeding up of the film, like when Benny Hill runs) there is in this film which is unfortunate. Still, the story is solid and most of the martial artistry survives intact. I recommend this movie, I only wish it hadn't been censored.

3 out of 5 stars very good!.......2005-03-15

Dvd plays how it's suppose to! There are no technical screw-ups,nothing! the picture is as good as it's gonna get! There are some graininess, some white crap you usually see in any low budget kung fu flick but it isn'y really that bad! The movie itself is pretty good! It's got really well choregraphed kung fu in which Yuen Biao and Cory Yuen are responsible for! And some weird characters! The story is the typical revenge, I must challenge you to become popular type! So product is a 7/10
the movie is 3 stars or if you perfer 6/10!

2 out of 5 stars Its Few Merits Are Owed To Unplanned Action........2005-06-06

This is the fifth in the set of East Side Kids films that form the middle grouping of the three series wherein Leo Gorcey, playing here as Muggs McGinnis, gives the members of the mini-mob that he leads little peace, with this wartime effort having a familiar subject: patriotic East Sider engagement versus enemy agents. While the others of the gang have found employment in support of the war effort as aircraft assemblers at a local plant, indolent Muggs prefers to remain unemployed while giving aid to his pals by driving them to and from work in his battered topless jalopy, and then merely hanging about while the rest are at work. As he is poking about near plane hangars, Muggs discovers a "Flying Ambulance" experimental craft, as well as a good-looking nurse who goes with it, Helen, played by Joan Barclay, and due to an overheard conversation, he is convinced that the physician/owner of the plane and his cohorts are spies responsible for a developing crisis involving domestic sabotage. Although Muggs is unsuccessful at an attempt to convince the factory owner that his plant is housing saboteurs, Muggs' fellow East Siders endorse his theory and the storyline arranges for a climactic conflict between them and a coterie of subversives, with test pilot Tom (Dave O'Brien), boyfriend of Helen, joining in to tangle with the Forces of Evil. A skimpy budget always worked nicely for producer Sam Katzman with his Monogram Pictures releases, but for this item, the original title of which was AIR DEVILS, dependence upon single takes gives it a threadbare look, although expressions of dismay upon the faces of Gorcey, Bobby Jordan and others in a well-known scene as the Muggs steered jalopy unexpectedly tips completely over are well beyond value. The comical ad libbing that enhances later productions in the series, especially after the addition of Huntz Hall, is scarce during the affair but it is noteworthy that Gorcey introduces his unique malapropisms with this work that also includes an appearance in the cast of veteran B film director Robert Hill, the same who was at the helm of the first East Side Kids undertaking.

1 out of 5 stars Labeled with warning about poor quality.......2005-02-25

Alpha/Gohtam has given fair notice with a warning label on the back stating that this DVD is below their general quality standards. The picture suffers from heavy compression, some objects move in the opposite direction of others in the same shot. It does not look as bad as the PLATINUM DISC "8 MOVIE" set, but it can be distracting. To date this rare movie has no other mastering material available.
