Arguably the greatest black comedy ever made, Stanley Kubrick's cold-war classic is the ultimate satire of the nuclear age. Dr. Strangelove is a perfect spoof of political and military insanity, beginning when General Jack D. Ripper (Sterling Hayden), a maniacal warrior obsessed with "the purity of precious bodily fluids," mounts his singular campaign against Communism by ordering a squadron of B-52 bombers to attack the Soviet Union. The Soviets counter the threat with a so- called "Doomsday Device," and the world hangs in the balance while the U.S. president (Peter Sellers) engages in hilarious hot-line negotiations with his Soviet counterpart. Sellers also plays a British military attaché and the mad bomb-maker Dr. Strangelove; George C. Scott is outrageously frantic as General Buck Turgidson, whose presidential advice consists mainly of panic and statistics about "acceptable losses." With dialogue ("You can't fight here! This is the war room!") and images (Slim Pickens's character riding the bomb to oblivion) that have become a part of our cultural vocabulary, Kubrick's film regularly appears on critics' lists of the all-time best. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
I didn't Laugh Once........2007-09-09
I asked for a bunch of comedies from the 60s & somehow this war satire landed in the pile. At least it was't one of those lame 50's propoganda films & had a somewhat interesting twist; this time an introverted American biggot nutcase is the bad guy, with his own president against him at every step, & Russua is the innocent victim. I couldn't get through more than 1/2 of it.
Peter Sellers at his best!!.......2007-09-01
I have been used to Peter Sellers in the Pink Panther movies but this 1964 movie is WONDERFUL! One movie..three different roles. Dr. Strangelove has stood the test of time since its release. If memory serves me correct this movie was originally to be released in late 1963 but was delayed due to the assassination of President Kennedy. George C.Scott did a superb job in his role. The scene in which the President (Peter Sellers) calling his Russian counterpart was hilarious. Worth watching again!!
funny story but bad timing.......2007-08-28
The first time that I saw this film, I thought it was the funniest.
but now, in this current time frame, it was sad, knowing that a war was
going on and our men were being killed for no good reason.
Sellers at his best!.......2007-08-23
For years I have heard about this movie, and I finally bought it at a time when I had the opportunity to watch it. Wonderful!! Sellers is a comic genius, and the subtly of the laughs is the great thing in Dr. Strangelove.
Better Each Time I See It.......2007-08-22
I have to admit that when I first saw this, it didn't actually make me stop worrying and love the bomb. However, almost everything about it is just perfect- from the gun battle in front of the Air Force's "Peace is our profession" sign to the Russian ambassador taking secret photos in the warroom after the end of the world to Dr. Strangelove's miraculous cure (when my 15 year old daughter recovered from her stroke, I had her rise from her wheelchair and say, "Mein Fuhrer, I can valk!"). Highly recommended as one of the greatest, if grimmest, comedies ever.

Without a Clue

Undoubtedly the first movie in history to have played in theaters with three different endings (depending on which theater you attended), Clue is a silly whodunit based on the familiar board game featuring Colonel Mustard, Mrs. Peacock, and all the other usual suspects. A broadly comic cast play the sundry suspects gathered in a mansion to solve a murder, knowing that one of their numbers is the culprit. Michael McKean, Eileen Brennan, and Tim Curry are the best of the bunch, and the film is as lightweight an experience as a round of the game itself. Directed by Jonathan Lynn (My Cousin Vinny). The video release contains all three endings. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
A Tim Curry Showcase.......2007-09-04
The classic board game comes to life in this film. A bunch of characters have been summoned to a strange mansion where they are given aliases. Eventually they meet a strange character named Mr. Body. When he is mysteriously killed the fun really begins. Who killed Mr. Body? The characters don't know and they all suspect each other. The police are on the way and everyone could be guilty. The only hope is to solve the murder before the police arrive.
Despite the strong cast this movie really showcases Tim Curry the most. The film was originally released in three versions, each with a different ending. On this disk you can choose to watch the theatrical release with a random ending or you can watch the video release that includes all three endings back to back. Other than that, there are no real features other than the basics (chapter menu, subtitles, etc). The story works well and moves at a madcap pace obviously inspired by movies such as Murder By Death and The Cheap Detective while still managing to make the plot and action true to the board game. A good choice if you are looking for a zany comedy. Check it out.
Finally saw Clue for the first time last night.......2007-08-17
Even though I was only on this planet one year before Clue was released you would think I would have watched this little gem by now. I loved all the characters (especially Tim Currey) and the murder/mystery aspect made it even more enjoyable. I saw it for free, but now I just ordered my copy here. I suggest you do the same, if you weren't smart enough to already do so years ago. Prepare to sit back, relax and laugh of course!
256 5-Star Recommendations Should Mean Something.......2007-08-02
It means you should see this film, that is if you haven't already. There are few movies which I would give a 5-star rating to and this is one of them. The movie is only 90 minutes in length and very easy to sit through. It has a nice mix of both verbal and physical comedy. It takes multiple viewings to catch all that's going on. But, it isn't like you have to sit and concentrate or you will miss something, totally the opposite. This is a fun movie. Just put it on and relax.
The basic synopsis is: guests are invited to a isolated country mansion for dinner. They are confronted with the fact that they have something in common, they are all being blackmailed. Locked in the house with the blackmailer, murder (and comedy) ensues. There are 3 endings to the movie which you can program to either play one after the other or just one at random.
The only disappointing thing to the DVD is the lack of extras. I was hoping for a 20-year anniversary edition filled with extras, but alas.
Clue.......2007-07-03
Another great classic! You can't go wrong buying this movie. It's still good and funny no matter how many times you've seen it.
hilarious movie.......2007-06-02
This is one of my favorite movies and has been since I was a little kid. I'm not sure it would hold up to most people's tastes, but it makes me laugh every time. Some of the best movie quotes made into inside jokes. Playing the game when I was little only made some of the references more amusing.
One of the best parts is the end - there are three! You can watch one randomly or all three. Something I wish would happen more often with silly movies made nowadays.

Before Harrison Ford assumed the mantle of playing Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan hero in Patriot Games, Alec Baldwin took a swing at the character in this John McTiernan film and hit one to the fence. If less instantly sympathetic than Ford, Baldwin is in some respects more interesting and nuanced as Ryan, and drawing comparisons between both actors' performances can make for some interesting postmovie discussion. That aside, The Hunt for Red October stands alone as a uniquely exciting adventure with a fantastic costar: Sean Connery as a Russian nuclear submarine captain attempting to defect to the West on his ship. Ryan must figure out his true motives for approaching the U.S. McTiernan (Predator, Die Hard) made an exceptionally handsome movie here with action sequences that really do take one's breath away. --Tom Keogh
Description
Based on Tom Clancy's bestseller, directed by John McTiernan (Die Hard) and starring Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin, THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER sweats with high-tech anxiety and the tension of men who hold Doomsday in their hands. A new technologically-superior Soviet nuclear sub, the Red October, is heading for the U.S. coast under the command of Captain Marko Ramius (Connery). The American government thinks Ramius is planning to attack. A lone CIA analyst (Baldwin) has a different idea: he thinks Ramius is planning to defect, but he has only a few hours to find him and prove it - because the entire Russian naval and air commands are trying to find him, too. The hunt is on!

Hunt for Red October, Outstanding.......2007-09-09
This copy replaces a destroyed VHS copy. Giant of a movie. Watched it many times, but when played it is always the first time. A good nail biter.
The Hunt for Red October.......2007-09-01
Great movie, Sean Connery played his role outstandingly. The Hunt for Red October (Special Collector's Edition)
Like, so 80's.......2007-06-24
This is a really good yarn, but the film adaptation is marginal - Connery and Baldwin are real, compelling, and entertaining, but the other actors leave much to be desired. Some really good shots of underwater scenes, and a good suspense level, but the acting could add a lot to this film.
The hunt for Red October.......2007-05-27
Connery at his best. A fantastic film. Definitely an owner movie.
Excellent Movie.......2007-05-02
I can't stand Alec Baldwin, but he did well in his first major motion picture. Sean Connery was good as he always is. I liked everything about it. The music is good. The special effects don't match these days, but I can live with it. A very dramatic, well acted movie I think.

The Company
ASIN: B000UEE6TC
Release Date: 2007-10-23 |
Amazon.com
Handsomely mounted, epic in scope, and featuring an outstanding cast, TNT's The Company might restore some much-needed luster to the image of the Central Intelligence Agency (then again, perhaps not). Based on Robert Littell's popular historical novel of the same name, the show commingles real and invented characters as it traces the CIA's role in several major events, from the earliest days of the Cold War through the collapse of the Soviet Union, with particular attention given to the division of Berlin into East and West in the 1950s, the anti-Communist uprising in mid-'50s Hungary, and the disastrous Bay of Pigs operation in the early '60s.
The first of the miniseries' three parts introduces us to Yale graduates Jack McAuliffe (Chris O'Donnell), Leo Kritzky (Alessandro Nivola), and Yevgeny Tsipin (Rory Cochrane); the first two are recruited by the CIA, but the Russian-born Tsipin sides with the KGB. The initial focus is on the CIA's efforts to find a Soviet mole who's been interfering with the agency's work and putting many American lives at risk. Working with mentor Harvey "The Sorcerer" Torriti (Alfred Molina), who calls him "Sport" and delights in pointing out that such matters are nothing less than a life-and-death struggle between good and evil and right and wrong, McAuliffe skulks around Berlin, where his principal informant and soon-to-be love interest is a lovely young ballerina (Alexandra Maria Lara) with a few secrets of her own. Meanwhile, back in Washington, the colorfully-named CIA counter-intelligence expert James Jesus Angleton (a real guy portrayed with low-key intensity by Michael Keaton) slowly realizes that the mole in question is one of his old pals. And it doesn't stop there. Turns out there's another double agent (codename "Sasha") working for the Reds; this one's deeply embedded in the CIA, and Angleton, a chain-smoking obsessive whose behavior becomes increasingly cold and peculiar, devotes years (and most of the series' third installment) to outing him. The process by which he does just that, culminating in some fairly excruciating interrogation scenes, provides The Company's best moments--especially because we don't know until the very end whether Angleton has fingered the actual Sasha or not.
Viewers unfamiliar with the CIA's history and methods aren't likely to be very encouraged by what's depicted here--especially in the second part, in which the agency's misadventures in Hungary and Cuba reveal it (as well as the U.S. government overall) to be not merely ineffective but disastrously inept, as well as shockingly callous and hypocritical when it comes to lending material support to the causes it claims to espouse. Still, the series does a good job with many of the elements common to such fare (Robert De Niro's 2006 film The Good Shepherd covers some of the same ground). Codes are written and deciphered. Secrets are kept
and revealed. Shots are fired, and some of them connect. People die, good and bad alike. And even if some of the scenes are a bit overheated and melodramatic, all in all, The Company (which was written by Ken Nolan, directed by Mikael Salomon, and produced by John Calley and Ridley and Tony Scott) is smart and entertaining. And some of it's even true. --Sam Graham

Plot Synopsis: The Company tells the story of Jack McCauliffe (O'Donnell), an idealistic Yale graduate recruited into the CIA by his coach. He's sent to the legendary Berlin Base in Germany to work with a man who becomes his mentor: the eccentric and colorful Harvey Torriti (Molina), codename "The Sorcerer". Jack and The Sorcerer are imprisoned in double lives, fighting an elusive but formidable enemy in an unrelenting and deadly battle within the CIA itself. However, Jack is forever changed as he must witness the cost in human lives.
Customer Reviews:
Very disappointing........2007-08-29
Interesting that this series skips over such titbits as Vietnam, Iran and Guatemala. It is as if the cold war was about Soviet agression and complete good will from American spy actors although they just don't always agree on how to get to their humanitarian goals.
I thought it was particularily funny how Alfred Molina with such smugness tells the Russian spy master off on his "Stalin loving ***" and especially his sentence implying that the CIA actually wanted free elections while the KGB was so evil to oppose it. This after the first episode which I was pleasantly surprised with and thought was very well done. Then they have to sour it all in the second episode.
What is most disheartening of it all is that this series is so well done, the actors I think are all doing a good job and although I was very surprised to see Michael Keaton in his role I think he does a fine job. The action is all very well done and I was so surprised with its quality as to rival that of an expensive feature film.
This makes it so disheartening because you can not just count it off to the usual hack jobs who do not plan well, read up and do their jobs well, they just seem to leave out all the really unflattering historical facts while highlighting those that are usually unflattering in the historical light of having been mistakes. It is easy thus to criticise from the standpoint of people making mistakes while not really emphasizing those actions which an agency might make while not perhaps evil in planning from the standpoint of the actors involved but non the less evil in nature.
The CIA and the derivative agencies and groups with all their purposely bewildering names, have never really championed democracy, at least not that democracy which might produce a result unfavourable.
It is telling that this series would produce characters that speak in such a way as to completely disregard the history of the agency when they talk as if they are freeing Cuba from a tyrant but at the same time completely forgetting the fact that the person that was deposed by Castro was a U.S. backed tyrant and also forgetting the stipulations of the original constitution imposed on Cuba after the U.S. "freed" Cuba from Spanish rule. The stipulations (Platt Amendent) which resulted in at least 3 subsequent invasions but they were of course seldom called that.
In short I was very disappointed with this series after a very promising start. I have never read the book so I have no idea how faithful this series was to the story. Given my disappointment I can't give this series more than two stars.
Rock on.
Daníel.
The Best mini-series in a long time.......2007-08-23
Years ago I gave up the spy novel for the crime novel, so I was hesitant to spend six hours in front of the tube to watch this miniseries. I was pleasantly suprised. Addicted, actually! Hyped for more! Great acting, photography and directing. Michael Keaton was AMAZING in his depiction of James Angleton.
Sign me up for the DVD.
Good, but not as good as the book.......2007-08-21
Robert Littell's The Company is a massive novel that follows the history of the CIA from post WWII to the end of the cold war. As long as three books, this novel is rich and full of characterization. So it's obvious that any such book would be hard to bring to the screen, large or small. The TNT TV version, at around 4 1/2 hours, tried hard, but didn't do justice to the book. It sometimes seems like an outline of the book, and so much is left out, that the action moves too quickly, changing locations and characters, making it hard to follow. This is more so in the early part of the series; the last 1/3 focuses on a more limited situation, the attempt to find a CIA mole.
Suffering from overbearing music that is way too loud in the early parts (which makes you wonder why the music was toned down so much in the last third), and characters who are supposed to age about thirty years, but look only a few years older, The Company is, nevertheless, good TV. It will keep your attention, and the intrigue is interesting, but be prepared to give it a chance; it's hard to follow at the beginning. The acting is good, the sets and locations interesting, and the plot - good vs evil - works well, especially since we already know who won the cold war.
But if you like this mini-series, do read the book - it is probably the best spy novel I've ever read, and is so much more interesting than this over-short TV version. No film could do it justice, but I can't help but think that a couple more hours could have saved this from its weaknesses.

Directed with consummate skill by Terence Young, the second James Bond spy thriller is considered by many fans to be the best of them all. Certainly Sean Connery was never better as the dashing Agent 007, whose latest mission takes him to Istanbul to retrieve a top-secret Russian decoding machine. His efforts are thwarted when he gets romantically distracted by a sexy Russian double agent (Daniela Bianchi), and is tracked by a lovely assassin (Lotte Lenya) with switchblade shoes, and by a crazed killer (Robert Shaw), who clashes with Bond during the film's dazzling climax aboard the Orient Express. From Russia with Love is classic James Bond, before the gadgets, pyrotechnics, and Roger Moore steered the movies away from the more realistic tone of the books by Ian Fleming. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
From Russia With Love.......2007-09-13
Another great 007 flick, with Sean Connery. Great plot, great villians, great gadgets, and beautiul women. What more do you want? Another ageless film I could watch year after year.
One of the best 007 movies!.......2007-06-28
Along with Goldfinger, this is probably the best of the early James Bond films. Sean Connery was excellent in it. The story and the cast is great. The fight scene on the train between Connery and Shaw is worth the price alone! A face paced, well thought out and entertaining film.
From Russia With Love.......2007-06-27
This stylish second entry in the Bond franchise features a less cold-blooded, more dashing 007, played to the hilt with campy savoir faire by the ever-classy Connery. Young streamlines the action, too, and in the absence of fancy gadgets (those came later), gave audiences thrilling, well-orchestrated chases and clashes, culminating in a heart-racing death match between Connery and deadly, dyed-blond assassin Shaw aboard the Orient Express. The kittenishly seductive Romanova is fetching as Bond's dicey love interest, but German chanteuse Lenya has the most fun springing poisonous blades from her shoes. Racy, exhilarating, and loads of fun, "Love" breathes flashy new life into Ian Fleming's classic novel.
The Bond movie that started a craze.......2007-06-27
From Russia With Love set the stage for all the James Bond movies that followed. With an excellent startup from Dr. No, James Bond gets into full swing battling SPECTRE up and down Europe, and has one of the best Bond fights on the Orient Express. Beautiful women, tough bad guys and just the right amount of Bond toys make it one of the best James Bond movies of them all!
An excellent addition to the Bond franchise........2007-06-16
Brimming with tension, suspense, and understated cool, From Russia with Love is one of the very best movies in the entire James Bond series. The plot, which revolves around the criminal organization SPECTRE and its attempt to steal a Soviet codemaking machine by manipulating and ultimatley murdering a certain British secret agent (guess which one), is clever and engrossing. Part of the movie's charm comes from simply watching SPECTRE's plan unfold. The film is also incredibly atmospheric: Bond travels to a lush, decedant Istanbul before heading back west on a train trip that hangs heavy with mystery and paranoia.
Sean Connery is, of course, incredible. To put it plainly, the guy simply IS James Bond. He's in complete command of the character, playing his role with absolute confidence, brimming with wit, charm, and ruthless intelligence. Connery's Bond is mesmerizing, his performance a masterpiece. The rest of the cast is fantastic as well: Lotte Lenya is unforgettable as the brutal Colonel Rosa Kleb, playing her part with relentless authority and barely subdued insanity. Ditto for Robert Shaw, whose portrayal of ruthless assassain Donald "Red" Grant is fiery and intense. Shaw turns his charater into an omen, a source of constantly escalating tension and nervous energy. Pedro Armendariz is superb as the exuberant, friendly, and loveable Kerim Bey, who befriends and assists Bond in Istanbul. The film also contains the first appearance of Desmond Llewelyn as Q, one of the series' most beloved characters (he'd appear in every subsequent Bond film until 1999's The World is Not Enough).
Throw in John Berry's tension-filled soundtrack and some of the sharpest one-liners ever found in a Bond film and you've got an absolute classic, and one of the finest entries in an excellent series.

Freely adapted from Charles Frazier's beloved bestseller, Cold Mountain boasts an impeccable pedigree as a respectable Civil War love story, offering everything you'd want from a romantic epic except a resonant emotional core. Everything in this sweeping, Odyssean journey depends on believing in the instant love that ignites during a very brief encounter between genteel, city-bred preacher's daughter Ada (Nicole Kidman) and Confederate soldier Inman (Jude Law), who deserts the battlefield to return, weary and wounded, to Ada's inherited farm in the rural town of Cold Mountain, North Carolina. In an epic (but dramatically tenuous) case of absence making hearts grow fonder, Inman endures a treacherous hike fraught with danger (and populated by supporting players including Philip Seymour Hoffman, Natalie Portman, and others) while the struggling, inexperienced Ada is aided by the high-spirited Ruby (Renée Zellweger), forming a powerful farming partnership that transforms Ada into a strong, lovelorn survivor. The film's episodic structure slightly weakens its emotional impact, and it's fairly obvious that director Anthony Minghella is striving to repeat the prestigious romanticism of his Oscar®-winning hit The English Patient. For the most part it works, especially in the dynamic performances of Zellweger and Kidman, and the explosive 1864 battle of Petersburg, Virginia, is recreated with violent, percussive intensity. Those who admired Frazier's novel may regret some of the changes made in Minghella's adaptation (the ending is particularly altered), but Cold Mountain remains a high-class example of grand, old-fashioned filmmaking, boosted by star power of the highest order. --Jeff Shannon

LOVE CONQUERS ALL!.......2007-09-13
man this movie is a breathtaking love story. it's for sure to be a classic. greatly written, and portrayed. the acting was excellent. i'm sure everyone was touched at one point or another with the story behind this film. it has war, hard times, and a love so deep it surpasses everything and anything. this is greatness. jude law, not much of a big fan, but the man did it for me in this one. no complaints. he was very good. believable, a prince charming. he fought with one thing in mind, his beautiful ada. he must do all that he can to get back to her, it's his will to love, that helps him live. and nicole kidman, love her, great actress. she really brought it here. a women in love, writing, hoping, and dreaming for her inman to return to her. hope is never lost, and her love is never gone. she goes from a woman of high society, to a woman who must do all she can to survive the long winter months. extrodinary performance, and the capacity to keep hope alive through all is great. as for renee zellweger, she was so good in this movie. i loved it. she's a loud mouth, off her rocker tomboy. a thumbs up for her collaboration in this film. she brought the sass, and the "i don't take no bull from nobody" attitude. just right for this film. this has it all. action, drama, love, and survival. when finally they do reunite, there is so much love and passion, you can't help but be happy for them both, finally they become one. although it was sad what happened to inman, it was sadder to see all he and she went through to be together, for the outcome to be this way, but i'm sure they would have preferred that one night together, than a lifetime without each other. and with their daughter it's proof that love conquers all.
The Odyssey of the Civil War?.......2007-08-30
"Cold Mountain" (2003) tries to be The Odyssey told during the Civil War -the story of a man on his way home to his eternal love and all the obstacles and tribulations he faces. There a lot to admire in "Cold Mountain" - Anthony Minghella sure knows how to make a good-looking film with great views and impressive cinematography. This and his previous films, "The English Patient" and "The Talented Mr. Ripley" are the good examples of his craft. The war scene in the beginning of the film is very impressive - realistic, powerful and violent. I did not read the book, so I can not comment on what parts were left out but the love story between Inman (Law) and Ada (Kidman) did not touch me very much. I am not sure if it has to do with the story itself or with the performances of two main characters but they were overshadowed by the supporting characters played by Eileen Atkins, Brendan Gleeson, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Natalie Portman, Kathy Baker, and Giovanni Ribisi. Some of them had only few minutes of screen time but their characters are interesting and alive. Renee Zellweger received all possible awards that year for her turn as Ruby, funny looking but strong, energetic and independent woman who had helped the helpless and lonely Ada to manage her farm after her father died. I liked the character but I was not too impressed by Zellweger's performance. I think she had overplayed and made Ruby too grotesque. I've seen four Oscar nominated performances from 2003 and I liked two much better than Renee Zellweger.
There is a very frank love scene between Law and Kidman in the end. It is the well made scene but too beautiful considering that two lovers went through the nightmares of war, starvation, disease, and the lack of any decent conditions. I saw on the screen two very attractive people in great shape with sexy bodies but not two lovers of Cold Mountain during the devastating war.
Beautiful Scenery But Shallow Story.......2007-08-28
I'm not quite ready to join in dismissing this version of the best selling novel Cold Mountain as a "big-budget chick flick" but I will say that I'm one of the few women I know who wasn't captivated by this movie. (Not many men I've talked to about it liked it, and mostly said that was because it needed more Civil War battle scenes, which I agree it did.) What was good about Cold Mountain was its visuals, which were often very nice. What was wrong with Cold Mountain had to do with its slow moving plot, and the intolerable extent of its departure from realism. The morality here was cartoon-ish and straightforward good versus evil, no line of gray between, and its love story was the fluff of razor-thin romance novels. I also thought the characters were broadly-drawn stereotypes who somehow exuded shallowness (that mortal sin of the fiction world) despite the many over the top moments they were all given. Dyed in the wool fans of the actors who make up the cast of Cold Mountain will probably always enjoy this film, and it's great that they do, but for the rest of us, I'd advise that expectations be kept low. Cold Mountain is all right, but not much more.
Wow! What a Story!.......2007-08-17
Loved Jude Law! The story line was awesome and so was the cast. Great film with some sad and good moments. It's a love story that will make you cry and laugh at times. I was touched!

Cold Mountain....aptly named, is along side many great epics. A truly touching and heart wrenching tale, beautifully done in every fashion.

When released in December 2000, Thirteen Days was pummeled for taking liberties with the facts of the Cuban missile crisis and smothering its compelling drama with phony Boston accents by its primary stars. More tolerant critics hailed it as one of the year's best films, and that's the opinion to believe for anyone who enjoys taut, intelligent political thrillers. For those too young to relate directly to the timeless urgency of the crisis that played out over 13 days in October 1962, Thirteen Days joins the classic TV treatment The Missiles of October (1973) as an intense and thought-provoking study of leadership under pressure.
The film (and costar-coproducer Kevin Costner) drew criticism for fictionally enhancing the White House role of presidential aide Kenneth O'Donnell, but while Costner's Boston accent may be grating, his fine performance as O'Donnell offers expert witness to the crisis, its nerve-wracking escalation, and the efforts of John F. Kennedy (Bruce Greenwood) and Robert F. Kennedy (Steven Culp) to negotiate a peaceful settlement with Russia. While Soviet missiles approach operational status in Cuba, director Roger Donaldson (who directed Costner in No Way Out) cuts to exciting U.S. Navy flights over the missile site, ramping up the tension that history itself provided. Donaldson's occasional use of black and white is self-consciously distracting, and he's further guilty of allowing a shrillness (along with repetitive, ominous shots of nuclear explosions) to invade the urgency of David Self's screenplay. Still, as Hollywood history lessons go, Thirteen Days is riveting stuff. You may find yourself wondering what might happen if reality presented a repeat scenario under less intelligent leadership. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Kevin Costner stars in this inside look at how the Kennedy Administration responded to the discovery of offensive Soviet weapons in Cuba, and the pressurized tug-of-war that ensued between the US and the USSR during the thirteen days of the missile crisi
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Movie.......2007-08-28
This movie portrays the events in the white house during the cuban missile crisis. Excellent acting. Captivating even though we know how it plays out. If half the portrayal of JFK's actions and words is accurate I tip my hat to him for standing up to the military and saving a lot of lives.
Gripping Historical Drama !.......2007-08-18
A well researched, gripping tale of the Cuban Missile Crisis told from the American viewpoint.
Thirteen Days.......2007-07-19
Those who like stories about JFK will likely want this in their collection. It is not the greatest of movies, but it does relate a period of history that is important as most American citizens never knew just how close we were to nuclear war. Kevin Costner does a creditable acting job, but there are some lines that are humerous and scenes that are poignant. One scene that strikes me every time I view the movie is one where Robert and JFK are seen only as shadows. They are not the shadows of actors but actually the historical figures. This did not do well in the box office, but again it seems to be historical accurate. It is a good view.
Nuclear Missile Crisis.......2007-07-10
Forget the multitude of indiscretions that JFK may have committed in his sadly short life and watch this film.
It tells the story of the Cuban missile crisis in 1962.
It isn't 100% accurate. Kevin Costners character never existed, although it may be mixture of a number of actual real-life people. However what it shows, with some great performances, is how close to a Nuclear catastrophy we came in 1962. I was only one at the time, so have no personal recollection of the events, but if this film is 50% true then we should all be grateful that JFK was in power and not Bush.
JFK was a mostly lone voice in a government full of hawks who were advising him to go for an all out nuclear first strike. JFK went behind their backs and did a deal with the Russians.
Of course if you believe that all out nuclear war is a sensible option then you will hate this film. For the rest of us though, this very well made film shows how great a politician Kennedy really was.
Thirteen Days.......2007-06-27
A great movie that relives the times of slow communication and hard headed politicians and the result that such a combination can bring.

Philip Kaufman's intimate epic about the Mercury astronauts (based on Tom Wolfe's book) was one of the most ambitious and spectacularly exciting movies of the 1980s. It surprised almost everybody by not becoming a smash hit. By all rights, the film should have been every bit the success that Apollo 13 would later become; The Right Stuff is not only just as thrilling, but it is also a bigger and better movie. Combining history (both established and revisionist), grand mythmaking (and myth puncturing), adventure, melodrama, behind-the-scenes dish, spectacular visuals, and a down-to-earth sense of humor, The Right Stuff chronicles NASA's efforts to put a man in orbit. Such an achievement would be the first step toward President Kennedy's goal of reaching the moon, and, perhaps most important of all, would win a crucial public relations/morale victory over the Soviets, who had delivered a stunning blow to American pride by launching Sputnik, the first satellite. The movie contrasts the daring feats of the unsung test pilots--one of whom, Chuck Yeager, embodied more than anyone else the skill and spirit of Wolfe's title--against the heavily publicized (and sanitized) accomplishments of the Mercury astronauts. Through no fault of their own, the spacemen became prisoners of the heroic images the government created for them in order to capture the public's imagination. The casting is inspired; the film features Sam Shepard as the legendary Yeager, Ed Harris as John Glenn, Dennis Quaid as "Gordo" Cooper, Scott Glenn as Alan Shepard, Fred Ward as Gus Grissom, Scott Wilson as Scott Crossfield, and Pamela Reed and Veronica Cartwright are superb in their thankless roles as astronauts' wives. --Jim Emerson

Customer Reviews:
The Right Stuff (Two Disc Special Addition).......2007-09-05
I had seen the movie when it was in the theatres and enjoyed it. The product from Amazon arrived quickly and was in 100% excellent shape. The reason the rating is only 4 stars is not because of the service which was 5 stars, but the movie has many technical errors caused by 1 - Tom Wolf's book and 2 - scenes with equipment that was not around when the movie takes place. Minor stuff really.
GREAT MOVIE, The second disk was fun, but for the price the movie was what I wanted.
If your interested in the early days of the manned space program, BUY THIS MOVIE, then get a copy of the book, then read MOON SHOT and WE SEVEN.
Rick Bunn
The Right Stuff - is a classic!.......2007-07-23
I had this movie on VHS and finally bought the DVD. Worth every penny and could watch this over and over again!
Grown-up? You bet. (Inappropriate for kids? No.).......2007-04-29
Any reviewer who insists that this movie contains content inappropriate for "students of any age" is exaggerating. "The Right Stuff" is rated PG. Any bright pre-adolescent would understand this film; certainly any high-school student would. It contains no sexual language that a 21st-century kid would not have already heard on American broadcast TV. In fact, the astronauts in the film talk like the 1960s "squares" they were, all too unwilling to use ugly language. They speak in metaphors and euphemisms, just as ordinary men of that era did.
"The Right Stuff" is patriotic, serious, wry, funny, observant, and utterly grown-up. It accurately depicts men and women confronting adult issues of ambition, celebrity, marriage, and brotherhood. What it is NOT...is a live-action movie with a cartoon mentality, like so many films deemed appropriate for school-age children by holier-than-thou "reviewers."
They were just men....or were they?.......2007-04-17
Scott Glenn, Ed Harris and Dennis Quaid are three wonderful reasons to watch this movie. Based on the book by Chuck Yeager, this movie depicts 1950's and 1960's mentality and eagerness to beat the Russians at the space race.
Sputnik scared the crud out of America, but we soon had our champions. The Mercury Seven!
The movie doesn't ooze with as much jealousy as was written in the book, but the focus of Yeager on his own accomplishments during this time really comes off as a "look at me" attempt. He was given a chance to be part of the Mercury Astronaut core and apparently turned it down. One of America's best pilots, one of its uniformed sons, denying his country's call at their most pivotal hour??? There's nothing heroic in that act.
There's plenty of heroism, however, in the storied accomplishments of the Mercury Seven. And to be fair, Yeager went on to accomplish quite alot in the field of Aviation. Either way, the story is one that is important to our nation's history. I thoroughly enjoyed it, the truth and the fiction of it.
The Right Stuff is Real.......2007-04-02
Through great casting and near-perfect screenwriting, this movie presents the transformation of the U.S. following WWII to a space exploring nation. The movie is based on a stellar book by Tom Wolfe, and the depictions of his pilots-cum-astronauts as they struggle to retain their pilot identities within the confines of training for these first probes into space ring true. Poignantly, their experiences are contrasted with those of perhaps the greatest test pilot of that generation, Chuck Yeager, who never became an astronaut.

The miracle about Miracle is that it gets so many details right in telling its 24-year-old story about the historic victory of the U.S. hockey team at the 1980 Olympic Games. It's typical for Hollywood to compromise such period details as hairstyles and fashion when catering to a contemporary audience, but Miracle looks and feels right in every detail, capturing the downbeat mood of post-Watergate America while showing how obsessively determined Minnesota hockey coach Herb Brooks (Kurt Russell) managed to assemble a once-in-a-lifetime team and whip them into a victorious frenzy over their Soviet champion opponents. With sharp support from Patricia Clarkson (as Brooks's wife) and Noah Emmerich (as his long-suffering assistant), Russell grounds the film with a well-balanced combination of aloofness, intimidation, and closely guarded strategy. No doubt the real Brooks (who died in a car accident shortly after filming completed) would have approved. Thanks to director Gavin O'Connor (Tumbleweeds) and the producers of the similarly laudable sports films Remember the Titans and The Rookie, Miracle brings plenty of heart--and historical accuracy--to an old, familiar formula. --Jeff Shannon
Description
From the studio that brought you THE ROOKIE and REMEMBER THE TITANS comes the movie everybody loves -- MIRACLE. Filled with exhilarating nonstop hockey action and heart-racing suspense, it's the inspiring true story behind one of the greatest moments in sports history the 1980 United States ice hockey team's triumphant Olympic victory against the Soviet Union. Kurt Russell gives a brilliant performance as the dynamic and determined coach Herb Brooks, who had an impossible dream -- beat the seemingly unbeatable Soviets at their own game. Starting with a handpicked group of 26 undisciplined kids, Brooks coached them to play like they never played before, and turned 20 of them into a team that believed they could achieve the unachievable -- and in the process, united a nation with a new feeling of hope.

Great movie.......2007-09-07
My son has started to play ice hockey. In the past three years he has become obsessed with the sport. I remember wanting to see this movie when it came out because I was in high school when the US team won the gold medal. I never did see it
