As with Star Wars, the George Lucas-produced Indiana Jones trilogy was not just a plaything for kids but an act of nostalgic affection toward a lost phenomenon: the cliffhanging movie serials of the past. Episodic in structure and with fate hanging in the balance about every 10 minutes, the Jones features tapped into Lucas's extremely profitable Star Wars formula of modernizing the look and feel of an old, but popular, story model. Steven Spielberg directed all three films, which are set in the late 1930s and early '40s: the comic book-like Raiders of the Lost Ark, the spooky, Gunga Din-inspired Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and the cautious but entertaining Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Fans and critics disagree over the order of preference, some even finding the middle movie nearly repugnant in its violence. (Pro-Temple of Doom people, on the other hand, believe that film to be the most disarmingly creative and emotionally effective of the trio.) One thing's for sure: Harrison Ford's swaggering, two-fisted, self-effacing performance worked like a charm, and the art of cracking bullwhips was probably never quite the iconic activity it soon became after Raiders. Supporting players and costars were very much a part of the series, too--Karen Allen, Sean Connery (as Indie's dad), Kate Capshaw, Ke Huy Quan, Amrish Puri, Denholm Elliot, River Phoenix, and John Rhys-Davies among them. Years have passed since the last film (another is supposedly in the works), but emerging film buffs can have the same fun their predecessors did picking out numerous references to Hollywood classics and B-movies of the past. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars A Set of Classic Movies, an Important Addition to Your Video Library.......2007-08-31

What could be better than a set of all three Indiana Jones movies? Each is exciting in its own way. Some people like the first movies the best; others like the second with the trip to China and the famous dinner scene; others like the third movie where Sean Connery plays the father of Indiana Jones.

I understand that a fourth Indiana Jones movies is in the works, and look forward to seeing it.

Book 1: Water, Vol. 1
Mysterious, visually beautiful at times, and surprisingly funny, Avatar: Book 1, Volume 1 is the exciting story of Aang, a 12-year-old reincarnation of the ancient Avatar, whose purpose (in an imagined world that seems both ancient and futuristic) is to restore peace and order between warring armies of the four elements: fire, earth, water, and air. At one time or another, over thousands of years, the Avatar has been embodied in masters of each of the elements. Aang (who is freed from a century-long sleep inside an iceberg) happens to be an "airbender," capable of using air and wind as powerful forces for moving objects and defeating hostile armies of firebenders. The feature-length Avatar follows Aang and a couple of friends as he becomes reacquainted with the world he knew before his 100-year hibernation--a world now lost to history. The story also concerns internal dramas within the unforgiving world of firebenders, who are intent on destruction and conquest. This engaging story, very pleasant to look at in its rich tones of blue and orange, is for all ages. --Tom Keogh

Book 1: Water, Vol. 2
Avatar The Last Airbender, Book 1: Water, Volume 2 continues the adventurous if half-comic journey of 12-year-old Airbender Aang, reincarnation of an ancient avatar, and his friends Katara and Sokka as they seek a teacher to help Aang fulfill his peacemaking destiny in a war-torn world. The four episodes on this disc, a follow-up to the elegant, magical series introduction, find the trio wandering through sundry Earth Nation cities, where they encounter signs of troubles between the once-harmonious, elemental tribes representing fire, earth, air, and water. They also bump into trouble with the occasional evil kingdom, as in "The King of Omashu," where Aang must go through various trials to save Katara and Sokka from a bizarre execution. (They're encased in growing, crystal structures.) "Imprisoned" finds Katara inadvertently responsible for the arrest of an Earthbending boy who dares to use his powers while his people are under Firebender occupation. The ambitious, two-part "Winter Solstice" is the best production in this collection, a pairing of storylines involving the capture of a Firebender war criminal and the hopes of a frightened village that turns to Aang to defeat a monster from the spirit world. The action is still original and fun on this sequel--most of it continues to be based on exciting uses of the elements--and the lead trio's characters (Aang the scamp, Katara the idealist, Sokka the skeptic) are still a pleasure to be with. --Tom Keogh

Book 1: Water, Vol. 3
The Avatar saga continues with four of the anime series' strongest stories yet on Book 1: Water, Volume 3, mixing goofy comedy with mythic drama in the spirit of Avatar's magical debut (Book 1 Water, Volume 1) and engaging follow-up (Book 1 Water, Volume 2). Volume 3 concerns the continuing (perilous) travels of Aang, the 12-year-old Airbender destined to heal the rift between the world's air, water, fire, and earth peoples, and his friends Katara and Sokka. "The Waterbending Scroll" finds Katara so jealous over Aang's quick mastery of complicated waterbending techniques that the trio ends up in trouble with a cluster of cutthroat pirates. "Jet" is an interesting story of an adolescent boy leading a Robin Hood-like rebellion against the firebending occupiers of his land. Charismatic and rakish, Jet makes Katara swoon and becomes a hero to Aang--until his true colors and agenda show up later. "The Great Divide" places Aang and company in the position of mediating a truce between refugees seeking assistance across a great canyon. Finally, "The Storm" is a superb piece which shows us, in parallel narratives, how Aang was fleeing his oppressed life as an avatar-in-training a century earlier when he became encased in ice, and how the driven, seemingly merciless Prince Zuko lost his own boyhood innocence before setting out to capture Aang. This excellent collection carries on the series' imaginative, graceful animation, making Avatar a real pleasure to watch. --Tom Keogh

Book 1: Water, Vol. 4

Book 1: Water, Vol. 5
Chapters 17 through 20 of Avatar the Last Airbender: Book 1 Water, Vol. 5 find Aang, the 12-year-old Avatar destined to bring peace to the world by mastering the four elements, once again in direct collision with the forces of the Fire nation. In "The Northern Air Temple," a sad Aang visits the ruins of a monastery well known to him in his past life. Aang is shocked to discover a tribe of faux Airbenders living there, presided over by an inventor with a dark and even treacherous secret. "The Waterbending Master" introduces Aang to a mentor he would just as soon avoid: an old Waterbender who can teach him to move, shape, and fight with liquid, prerequisites to Aang assuming his place as the world's savior. Meanwhile, Aang's traveling companion Katara is frustrated by that same master's refusal to sharpen her own natural, Waterbending talent; until, that is, an unexpected link between them becomes clear. (Aang's other friend, Sokka, stays busy--and crazy--chasing a princess who gives him mixed signals about her romantic interest.) "The Siege of the North, Parts 1 and 2" is yet another epic confrontation between Admiral Zhao's Fire Navy fleet and the Aang gang. The twist this time is that Zhao attempts the murder of Prince Zuko, an action that cannot go without consequences. As usual, Avatar is visually exciting and highly original, an otherworldly yet fully accessible fantasy full of dreams and good humor. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Nickelodeon's Masterpiece.......2007-08-29

For some reason I expected this to be good. And I wasn't really disappointed. I have to point out that this is one of the few animations that is actually for kids. It doesn't contain an overwhelming amount of violence. In fact the action scenes aren't very full contact but they're very entertaining.

The story has to be one of the best I have seen in a very long time. It also has a pretty good charasmatic cast as well. Intelligent dialogue and well written stories. I say the only con to me is the main character. I fully understand that he is very young. But sometimes his immaturity really annoyed me. And he didn't seem to learn too much from his mistakes and take his role as the savior very seriously. Overall I still like him though. The second main character Katara is by far my favorite followed by the exiled prince.

I have to note this for the diehard anime fans. If your looking for the Naruto type of action and comedy or the over bloody head shattering killings, or fan service. Then stay away from this. This show is not about that at all. It does not have graphic death or nudity scenes.

Overall this is a very good watch for both children and adults. And its the best thing I have ever seen on Nick. The set is 5 DVD's containing 20 episodes. I'm glad I learned about this and I'm going to get the second volume the day it comes out. I caught a few more later episodes and it only gets better.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST cartoon I've ever seen to date.......2007-08-23

Words simply cannot describe this series. Seriously, you have to watch it to believe how good it is. Once you do, you'll be hooked and you'll be back here writing the next review. I guarantee it. :)

I salute Nick for achieving the impossible and kudos to all the writers, artists, composers and talents that contributed to this series.

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD set.......2007-08-13

My family loves this series. Everything about Avatar, The Last Airbender is wonderful--great story, great characters, great humor, wonderful animation, kid-friendly, cute animals. If I could give it higher than 5 stars, I would. We intend to purchase all of the sets.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!.......2007-08-12

This is wonderful animation. It is beautifully drawn and the storyline is incredible. Great entertainment for all ages and you will never be bored of watching it over again. I have preordered the box set volume 2 which will not be available until September. My family and I can hardly wait to see if Aang the Avatar saves the world. Highly recommendable, you will not regret it.

Keeps you entertained even if you are an adult

Die Hard is the movie franchise that made a movie star out of TV star Bruce Willis, and created an entire action-movie genre of its own. In the original 1988 film, Willis plays wisecracking New York cop John McClane, who arrives at the Nakatomi Plaza in Los Angeles to meet up with his estranged wife, Holly (Bonny Bedelia), at her office Christmas party. As luck would have it, the company ends up in the middle of a terrorist plot led by Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) and his gang of expert killers, and with little help coming from outside, McClane has to pick off his enemies one by one. Thus was born the "Die Hard genre ", epitomized by such films as Under Siege ( " Die Hard on a ship "), Passenger 57 ("Die Hard on a plane" ), Speed ( "Die Hard on a bus" ), and Cliffhanger ( "Die Hard on a mountain "). But few measure up to the explosive brilliance of Die Hard. Director John McTiernan develops the action at a fast and furious pace, culminating in some fantastic set-pieces on the top of the building, in the elevator shaft, and in the building's outer plaza. Jeb Stuart and Steven E. de Souza's script, based on Roderick Thorp's novel Nothing Lasts Forever, is smart, funny, and full of memorable lines (among them "Welcome to the party, pal!" and of course "Yippee ki-ay, motherf*****"), and the cast is perfection, especially Rickman as the cunningly evil villain, and Willis, whose McClane character--bloodied, beaten, bruised, and barely breathing, as he battles both bad guys and bureaucrats--is someone audiences could genuinely cheer for.

Directed by Renny Harlin, the 1990 sequel, Die Hard 2 (unofficially referred to as Die Harder), doesn't match the level of the original, but it's still an exciting thrill ride with some terrific action sequences. One year after the Nakatomi incident, McClane (Willis) is awaiting his wife's (Bedelia) plane to arrive at Dulles Airport when he stumbles onto a plot to paralyze the entire airport, including all the planes trying to land. It's up to McClane to take on the cadre of bad guys despite all the bureaucrats standing in his way, and before the planes run out of fuel and crash to the ground. The cast includes William Sadler as rogue military man Col. Stuart, Dennis Franz as the latest bureaucratic cop to get in McClane's way, Richard Thornburg as the annoying reporter from the original movie, John Amos as a special-forces commander, early-in-their-career John Leguizamo and Robert Patrick as terrorists, and future politician and Law and Order actor Fred Thompson as the head of air traffic control.

The third film in the series, Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995), was again directed by John McTiernan and uses a different concept. The villain (played by Jeremy Irons) claims to have planted bombs all over New York City and gives John McClane (Willis), now alchoholic and separated, a series of clues to try to track them down. Along the way, he's aided by, and eventually teams up with, a Harlem shopkeeper named Zeus Carver (Samuel L. Jackson). The interplay between Willis and Jackson is engaging, but better suited to the Lethal Weapon franchise it was previously considered for, and not till the end does the movie return to the familiar McClane-vs.-villains-showdown format.

The 2007 Die Hard Collection is a four-disc set that comes up short when compared to the previous six-disc Ultimate Collection , which is now out of print. That 2001 set had two discs for each film (plus, Die Hard was a Five Star Collection release). This set does away with all of the second discs, though it retains the features that were on the movie-only discs, including director commentaries and the seamlessly branched version of the first film with a scene added back in. There's also a brand-new fourth disc, but it's pretty minor. "Wrong Guy, Wrong Place, Wrong Time" is a 40-minute retrospective of the original movie. Wide-ranging but rather dull, it collects interviews with director John McTiernan, cinematographer Jan De Bont, screenwriters Jeb Stuart and Steven E. De Souza, other crew, and actors Reginald Veljohnson, Hart Bochner, and William Atherton. Also from 2007, "The Continuing Adventures of John McClane" looks at the second and third movies in the series. It's a mere 13 minutes and only interviews the two directors, Renny Harlin and (in new and old footage) John McTiernan. Last, three trailers for the 2007 film, Live Free or Die Hard, make this set look like something that was released merely to have something on the shelves while the new film was in theaters. --David Horiuchi

3 out of 5 stars Rating for THIS VERSION.......2007-09-11

These are great movies... BUT, don't buy this set. The 2001 release can be found for cheap and actually has more features. There isn't anything new or great about this release. Stick with the 2001 six-disc set or wait for Blu-ray.

4 out of 5 stars Die Hard Trilogy.......2007-09-04

All of the Die Hard's are enjoyable entertainment. I wanted to watch these before seeing the latest 2007 Die Hard. This had been a great series.

The collection is great. It brings the wonderful work of Bruce Willis all together. I couldn't live without it.

Item was in great shape, came much faster than expected shipping. Movie set was in very safe packaging.

1 out of 5 stars Don't be a fool!.......2007-08-14

Don't be fooled into buying this boxset. It is a big waste of money. It doesn't have all the features of the old 2001 6 disc set. You might as well say it is a barebones edition of the movie instead of the old ultimate edition from 2001 that had two discs per movie. You want to get the real deal then get the ultimate edition on here and go to the used section. There should be some used ultimate edition boxsets on here. Possibly some that someone is selling unopened even. Those are the ones that have all the good stuff. This set is a huge slap in the face to fans like me and probly you that are reading this. Please don't waste your money on this set. Track down a copy of the old Die Hard Ultimate Edition set. You won't be sorry if you are like me and love bonus features.

The Disney touch is all over this grand, colorful version of the Johann Wyss adventure of a European family set off for the new world of New Guinea. The film opens on a ship jostled and torn by a raging storm while a family struggles to make it through alive. Tossed into a reef near a deserted tropical island, father John Mills takes charge and the family soon turns their island prison into a veritable paradise. Their multilevel tree house, built in record time, is complete with running water and a working pipe organ scavenged from the ship, while their grand yard is abloom in English roses. As a tale of hardship and pioneer pluck, the tale is pure fantasy, but as entertainment it's energetic and appealing. The island is impossibly populated by ostriches, zebras, lions, and elephants, a private zoo that delights the youngest boy and offers plenty of comic relief. The two older brothers discover even wilder life when they rescue the prisoner of oriental pirates (led by hard-bitten Sessue Hayakawa). There's little real danger anywhere in the film--even the climactic battle with the pirates is a cartoonish affair, with coconut bombs and nonlethal booby traps, until the final desperate, deadly moments. Hardly a faithful adaptation of the novel, but a lush, beautifully photographed film and an entertaining adventure safe for all ages. Dorothy McGuire costars as the proper, worry-prone mother. (Ages 5 and older) --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars Knew I could find.......2007-06-04

My son loved the movie Swiss Family Robinson when he was little. I have looked for it previously in stores but could not find. I knew we could find it on Amazon. I have told my grandchildren about the movie and the adventures the family has on an island. I got this movie for my son for Father's day so he can share it with his children. The movie is funny, adventurous, and shows so much ingenuity when the family needs shelter. It is a good family movie all will enjoy.

This is a great movie. I bought the DVD To ensure my Grandchildern had a chance to see this Movie.

5 out of 5 stars One Of Our Family's Favorite Classic Stories.......2007-05-11

This DVD contains Disney's adaptation of the original book, Der Schweizerische Robinson, written by author Johann David Wyss, in 1812. It is one of the finer works of Disney, in my opinion. The story of this family's struggles and determination, difficulties and joys is good watching (and good reading) for every member of the family. One of the most delightful aspects of this work is the emphasis placed upon good character, family values, and self-reliance. I recommend this movie to everyone...

5 out of 5 stars Talk about a CLASSIC!!!.......2007-05-10

You can't go wrong here! My siblings and I LOVED this movie as kids. I bought it for my son and daughter when they were younger and again, they LOVED it and watched it (and quoted it) repeatedly. I am now buying it for my young (7ish) nephews to enjoy. Probably my favorite no-cartoon Disney flick of all time!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Family Movie.......2007-04-03

This is an excellent movie. I am so glad I purchased it for my son. I got it for his birthday 7 and at first he didnt really have an interest in watching it, but he was home from school sick one day and we watched it and I couldnt tear him away. He loved it! Its adventure, imagination, and fun all rolled into one.

--Tom Keogh

This story of a winsome orphan and his guardian dragon features an Academy Award-nominated score and song, Helen Reddy's "Candle on the Water." The combination of a live-action story with an animated figure was innovative in 1977, and the green dragon with pink wings will still charm youngsters today. However, its plot has the boy running from a nasty family to whom he's been sold into slavery, as well as an evil magician who tries to steal the dragon for his parts. These dark story lines may scare or bore younger children, who only want to see Elliot the dragon belch fire and give Pete rides on his back. And older children who might appreciate the plot may scoff at the relatively crude animation. This leaves a rather narrow audience window of about ages 3 to 7. A cast of veterans includes Shelley Winters, Mickey Rooney, and Red Buttons, who all turn in the hammiest of performances. Acting newcomer Reddy demonstrates both why her acting career never took off and why her singing career did. (Lines like "You're a bunch of superstitious ding-dongs" don't give her much help.) However, her sometimes awkward performance as the lonely lighthouse keeper who gives the boy a home provides the film with its heart. Bottom line: it's a keeper for diehard Disney fans, dragon lovers, and those who remember this movie fondly from their childhood. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Description

Pete, a young orphan, runs away to a Maine fishing town with his best friend--a lovable, sometimes invisible dragon named Elliott! When they are taken in by a kind lighthouse keeper, Nora (Helen Reddy), and her father (Mickey Rooney), Elliott's prank playing lands them in big trouble. Then, when crooked salesmen try to capture Elliott for their own gain, Pete must attempt a daring rescue.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Whimsical Family Musical.......2007-08-25

"Pete's Dragon" is a solid family film that's full of music, fun, and adventure. It stars Sean Marshall as Pete, a lonely orphan who's managed to escape from the hands of the evil Gogan family who legally "bought" him from the orphanage. A friendly and sometimes invisible dragon named Elliott helps him escape, and they end up in the coastal town of Passamaquoddy, Maine. Unfortunately for Pete, Elliott gets them into a lot of trouble with the locals. They hide out in a cave until a friendly lighthouse keeper (Helen Reddy) finds them and takes Pete in to live with her and her father (Mickey Rooney). No one believes that Elliott really exists (except for Nora's dad) until Elliott trashes the town school. A travelling "doctor," Dr. Terminus (Jim Dale), and his partner in crime, Hoagie (Red Buttons), cook up a scheme to capture Elliott and use him for profit. Oh, and the Gogan family is still looking for Pete as well. To top it all off, Nora longs for a lost love whom Pete claims that Elliott will find. It's all played out lighthearted and sort of silly, scattered with music and horseplay throughout.

The cast is very strong. Including all of the above mentioned legends and newcomer Marshall, the cast also includes Shelley Winters as the Gogan matriarch, Jim Backus ("Gilligan's Island"), and Jeff Conaway ("Grease" and "Babylon 5"). The music is very good, although it isn't on the same level as songs featured in other Disney classics. For the 1970's, the blending of animation and live action is pretty good.

The DVD itself is okay. The digital transfer is good although a few shortcomings can be seen in the film. The audio is good except in a couple of the songs, where it gets louder and quieter at brief times. Special features include a fun featurette called "Man, Monsters, and Mysteries" which highlights a still-standing theory on the Loch Ness Monster. There's a modest "Where's Elliott?" game, a Disney Family Album excerpt, preview trailers, and a funny short featuring Donald Duck called "Lighthouse Keeping."

If you're a big fan or collector of Disney, this film is a nice purchase. If you only want films that the whole family can watch, you might want to preview this disc before buying it. The film may get a little boring for youngsters since the dragon isn't always on screen and their are long segments of nothing but live action and story development that might lose their interest. Also, the run time clocks in at just over two hours. That's not good if you have an impatient tot running around. My six year-old enjoyed it, but she loves musicals to begin with. Overall, "Pete's Dragon" is a decent family musical film for families with children five and up. Enjoy it.

After a 10-year break from the role that made him a TV superstar, Peter Falk returned as rumpled LAPD homicide detective Lt. Columbo in 1989, appearing in feature-length episodes of The ABC Mystery Movie. The first five of those TV movies are collected here as the Mystery Movie Collection 1989 comprising what is essentially the long-delayed "eighth season" (and part of the ninth) of Columbo, the popular series that made its debut on NBC in 1971. Now signed to ABC with a lucrative new contract, Falk returned to his iconic role as if he'd never left, still wearing the same worn-out overcoat, still driving the same old 1959 Peugeot rust-bucket (with his lazy Bassett Hound "Dog" in the passenger seat), still making frequent references to the never-seen "Mrs. Columbo," and still annoying nervous murder suspects with his politely cunning approach to solving homicides in Los Angeles. As created by TV mystery masters Richard Levinson and William Link, the Columbo series was nothing if not formulaic, but the fun of watching these 93-minute TV movies comes from seeing how that formula still works like a charm: The first half-hour shows how the killers commit and conceal their crimes (Columbo is a police procedural, not a whodunit), and the remaining hour shows Columbo grilling his suspects, slowly turning up the heat until the killer's goose is summarily cooked. With his trademark line "Just one more thing...," Falk fits his role like an old shoe, and the show's writers played on the character's beloved status by milking humor from Columbo's well-established mannerisms, such as leaving the room after gently probing suspects for telling clues, then returning (after a pregnant pause) to deliver "one more thing "--his crime-solving coup de grace (aptly referred to by Rockford Files creator Stephen J. Cannell as Columbo's trademark "dart to the heart.")

The Mystery Movie Collection emphasizes a colorfully Southern Californian element of crime and eccentricity, from the beheading of a magician in "Columbo Goes to the Guillotine" (with Anthony Andrews hamming it up as the killer) to the malicious misdeeds of "Murder, Smoke and Shadows," in which Spielbergian movie-mogul wunderkind (Fisher Stevens) stages an electrocution murder on the backlot of Universal Studios. "Sex and the Married Detective" is a lightly comedic film noir send-up, in which a sex therapy radio-host (Lindsay Crouse) invents a sexy alter ego to eliminate her cheating lover. In "Grand Deceptions," Robert Foxworth's misdeeds on a military training base aren't clever enough to fool Columbo, and in "Murder: A Self Portrait," Patrick Bachau plays a selfish lothario with three lovers (wife, ex-wife, and girlfriend) who decides that three's a crowd and his ex (Fionnula Flanagan) has got to go! Clever enough to hold anyone's attention, these murders are smartly conceived and entertainingly solved, and the performances and direction are uniformly strong. But the obvious appeal of Columbo is Columbo himself, and with Falk in the role he was born to play (even though it was originally offered to Bing Crosby!), the character remained so popular that he appeared in 19 more TV movies between 1990 and 2003. The Mystery Movie Collection includes one DVD bonus feature: a 30-minute tribute to "America's Top Sleuths," as chosen in a 2007 online survey by viewers of the newly-launched Sleuth TV network. Columbo ranks #2 (out of 10), a close runner-up to Tom Selleck's Magnum P.I. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I love columbo!!! .......2007-09-07

I became an instant fan of columbo from the very first tv movie on through the tv series and on through the later tv movies. I had recorded all of them on VHS (with a quick finger on the pause button for comercial edit) and managed to do a pretty good job of it.
The older ones of course had to be taken from syndication, as vedio recorders were away off from the time of the early episodes aired.
Needless to say, when I learned they would be comming out on DVD, I wasted no time at all ordering from amazon season one through the last offered (tv movies)!
Since then I have been waiting and hopeing they don't stop there, as some of my favorites have yet to be announced to be out on DVD.(does anyone know if more will be on the way???) I know I'm not the only one waiting and wondering.
It would be a shame to stop now.
I know a lot of columbo fans don't agree that the later columbo tv movies were as good as the early series, but I think there was more emphises toward hummor, like the continuing decline of his car. And I also think that the hummor really started in the earlier series when Patrick McGoohan would enter as the antagonist. He and Peter Falk played off each other so well! Who could argue the suttle and clever hummor in 'Ashes TO Ashes'?
While everyone knows, most of columbo's gathered evidence in the real world would hardly be enough to arrest, let alone convict. Hey... Its called entertainment, a break from reality, and sometimes we wish life would work that easy. The stories are well written, some very clever, and yes 'just one more thing'.....ammusing.
My wife and I have watched these over again and again, and will continue to do so.
Just hope they finish the job.

3 out of 5 stars Ham Sandwich.......2007-08-29

Perhaps it's becasue that majority of Columbo was produced in the early 70s, an era far more distant in the social conscious than the late 80s, that I can be forgiving of the awful affectations of those earlier actors than those captured here. But stilted and hammy is hardly adequate to describe the downright distracting badness of most of the acting in these episodes. I'm sorry, I love Columbo, I really do, but fans, it really is OK to miss these.

2 out of 5 stars bad series.......2007-08-13

I'm glad i didn't buy this. no matter how he tries, is far away from original seasons (wich is my favorite movie), is older, is moving slower, talk slower, modern music in movies, not talking about uninspired stories.
The movie with Guillotine, OMG what a shame at the end, Columbo takes a gun with a flag and sais that is very very happy to arrest him, the killer. Columbo is never happy about that.
Neither other actors are better.
Disapointed per total, i saw series 8 and 9, this dvd contains 8 and one movie from 9.

5 out of 5 stars JUST EXCELLENT!!!.......2007-08-11

I am a Columbo fan. I had'nt seen these mystery movies with such a detail, they are just excellent. I hope there'll come some other Movie Collections. Keeep up, they're terrific.

4 out of 5 stars Columbo fans should snatch these up while they can!.......2007-08-05

Columbo "purists" have a slight disdain for the 80's revival of the series for many reasons: lack of BIG guest stars, the two-hour running time, and a slight change in the Falk character. However, these five installments from the first season of the "resurrection" have their moments.

Fortunately, the lesser of the episodes kicks off first, "Columbo Goes to the Guillotine," a rather lackluster entry with a ho-hum performance from guest star Anthony Andrews. This one is saved only by the appearance of the always-dependable Anthony Zerbe as Andrews' antagonist and murder victim.

That leaves the remaining four episodes to save the set. "Murder, Smoke, and Shadows" makes great use of the Universal lot (where "Columbo" is filmed) and has a sly tongue-in-cheek flavor as it deftly has a murderer that bears a striking similarity to the studio's wunderkind, a guy by the name of Spielberg.

"Sex and the Married Detective" features Lindsay Crouse as a sex therapist that uses some of her own techniques to dispose of an unfaithful lover. Composer Patrick Williams offers up a brilliant and rather sexy score.

"Grand Deceptions," with its military setting, is somewhat reminiscent of the 70's episode "By Dawn's Early Light" starring Emmy-winner Patrick McGoohan. Robert Foxworth is no McGoohan but affords himself well as a murderous army colonel.

And the most artistic of the bunch, appropriately, is "Murder: A Self-Portrait" with Patick Bauchau as a painter that murders his ex-wife to protect himself from a secret that she holds. The installment features Shera Danese, the real-life wife of star Falk, as the present wife and also has Vito Scotti, a frequent guest performer on "Columbo." Patrick Williams provides another wonderful musical accompaniment and there is intriguing Dali-esque camerawork for three different dream sequences.

The episodes originally aired on ABC and the color is not as sharp as the earlier episodes, aired on NBC.

The bonus extra is a Sleuth TV documentary on television's greatest detectives. Unfortunately, the list of the top ten is rather biased, considering that most are from Universal productions, the company that backs the television network and "Columbo."

From the moment Jennifer Garner appeared on screen, tied to a chair in a fluorescent red wig, Alias burst onto the scene as an intriguing "spy-fi" series that sucked viewers into a weekly action movie. Like its successor, Lost, creator J.J. Abrams spun a cult favorite show that held interweaving conspiracies, mysteries, and even some of the same actors. Unlike the island drama, however, Lost was really only about one central character: Student-turned-agent Sydney Bristow (Jennifer Garner, who was catapulted from obscurity to the A-list) learns the government agency she was working for isn't CIA at all, but a rogue baddie outfit called SD-6. Sydney, along with her father (Victor Garber, robbed of an Emmy) work as double agents to bring down SD-6 and its top gun, the ever-shifty Arvin Sloane (Ron Rifkin). Once that happened, of course, there were more bad guys and villainous networks to be brought down, and the rest of the series followed Sydney's adventures--always in various disguises--as she roundhouse-kicked her way through each one.

While season one was about the threat of SD-6 discovering her identity, season two dealt with her personal relations: her romance with CIA handler Vaughn (Michael Vartan), her reunion with her duplicitous mother (Lena Olin, The Unbearable Lightness of Being) and hiding her agenda from outsider friends while revealing it to her former SD-6 comrades. Season three catapulted Sydney two years into the future (with amnesia!) facing a suspicious new agent (and Vaughn's new wife) and more prophecies of Rambaldi, a cross between Da Vinci and Nostradamus whose writings and artifacts became a deadly obsession for Sloane. Seasons four and five went all over the map, introducing a new black-ops unit, a half-sister for Sydney (Mia Maestro), two new agents (Balthazar Getty and Rachel Nichols), and more bad guys before its final showdown between Sydney and Sloane. Due to the show's cancellation and hurriedness to finish season five in a shortened amount of time, some plot points and questions were never answered.

On the DVD
The entire Alias series comes housed in a replica of the Rambaldi box, an intricately designed gold case with red velvet lining, embossed with "IRINA" on the lid just as it was on the show. Inside, each season's discs are housed in its own storybook case, and a small hardcover companion book features the show's cast and crew answering fans' burning questions, particularly the unanswered storylines such as "Who was Deep Throat?" (the anonymous tipster who kept calling Will in season one, whose identity was never revealed). Hidden in the Rambaldi case's false bottom(!) is a bonus disc of material not found in any previous DVD release. The featurette "Case Closed" interviews cast members at the close of the show, with footage of their very last set takes (It's touching to see veteran stars Garber and Kevin Weisman, who plays lovable techie geek Marshall, struggle not to cry while season five newbie Nichols weeps openly). The included fan tributes are amusing to watch; one inventive obsessor hangs a red Japanese lantern above his bed and calls it his own personal "Mueller sphere." Other featurettes explore interviews with the cast after the pilot was filmed; the significance of the number 47 throughout the series; the numerous networks of villains (The Covenant, K. Director, Prophet 5, etc.) But the best quote from the bonus disc comes from an interview with Rifkin, who assesses Sloane's complex motives with: "He's bad. Sloane is bad. Sloan is baaaaad. Sloane. Is. Bad." If you're a die-hard Alias fan and don't own any of the previous seasons on DVD, this one is for you. -- Ellen A. Kim

4 out of 5 stars So far so good..........2007-09-13

I am still watching Season one, but so far the story is intriguing and I enjoy the fight choreography.

5 out of 5 stars Alias - will there ever be another, not.......2007-09-11

I loved this entire series. I know some people though that a few seasons the ball was dropped but when you take this series against others, aside from 24 I can't think of any that keep you on the edge of your seat like this one. I was very sad to see it end.

1 out of 5 stars This is only about the packaging of the DVD set.......2007-08-31

Simply, if you are a collector, don't buy this set. It has an essential designing defect. for example there is not even one simple DVD in this box that you can find defectless. all of them are scratched because of wrong desiging of Disc holders, Some have been caused scratches during the packaging line, some in transportation and some at the first time you pull each of them out!. worse is, there are finger prints on many of discs. Box is very good looking inside out, maybe unique but when you want to pull out a disc and play it and when you see the scratches all over not most, ALL OF THEM, you feel you want to throw it out in trashcan! Yes it comes in shrink wrapp but in Amazon terms, it's status is "ACCEPTABLE" not "NEW". if they sell it at the price of 30 to 40 dollars it may worth it but in this price buying it just like you roll you money and light is as a cigar!

5 out of 5 stars Alias Box Collectin.......2007-08-23

I was impressed how quick the order came, and I am glued to the TV whenever I have the opportunity to watch this arrival. It is mind boggling and wonder why I didn't place this order before.

5 out of 5 stars JJ Abrams Delivers..........2007-08-22

Without a doubt the show that should have been so much bigger then it was. Non-Stop actions filled with insane, mind bending twists at the end of almost every episode makes you never want to turn your DVD off.

I bought the Artifact box after watching the first seven episodes of the series and knew that I was going to want to watch the entire story unfold. Many people smash the show for the lack of a "superstar" actor, but they coulnd't be more wrong.

Jennifer Garder (who is now a family name) makes her first major apperance as Sydney Bristow, a woman who is led to believe she is working for the CIA. Ron Rifkin and David Anders provide the main antagonists of the show and provide emmy award type performances in almost every episode.

24 style action with Lost style twists, Alias is everything an Action-Adventure / Drama lover could ever ask for. If you like the shows I list below, Alias is for you...

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Video and Audio Quality - Killer Movies!.......2007-06-12

This was the first thing I bought to play on my Blu-ray player. Over 20 movies later, and it still holds up. You haven't seen these movies until you see them on Blu-ray - it's as simple as that.

3 out of 5 stars Great Film, Great collection - Average blu ray picture.......2007-06-10

These films are great to watch but don't rush out to get them on blu ray as there is only minimal difference between the blu ray version in quality to the standard dvd.

5 out of 5 stars MI BluRay.......2007-05-17

If you have a Hi-Def TV and you don't have a Blu-Ray player
you have no idea what your TV can do! This Mission Impossible movie set shows you why the Panavision cameras and lenses used to film movies cost over a quarter million dollars each and the Kodak film used in them cost well over a thousand dollars a roll. The blu-ray Panasonic DMP-BD10 - Blu-Ray disc player - upscaling images from this player I bought from Amazon are simply stunning! And this is a top notch action movie set.

4 out of 5 stars Good package.......2007-02-20

For the fun of the series this is a must. Although MI III was not what I anticipated ( I reviewed this movie seperatelly) the other two movies make up for it. Great high definition picture and sound they actually make the films even better. The fifth star is lost due to MI III but even so the set is definatelly worth buying and enjoying.

4 out of 5 stars Best way to get a Blu-ray library started!.......2007-02-07

This is a great collection of action movies that every DVD collector needs to have on Blu-Ray. High definition only adds to the enjoyment of these films and with the price at only $69.95 it is one of the cheapest ways to get a bunch of blu-rays fast. Being that this is the first box set released to Blu-ray, it makes me very excited for other boxsets to appear in the future. This one packs plenty of bang for your buck. Great transfers, soundtracks and tons of extras make this one a four-star box set.
