Description

In this stylish, riveting French thriller, film icons Charles Bronson and Alain Delon team up to create a one-of-a-kind buddy film with a fascinating premise. After serving together in the French Foreign Legion, Franz Propp (Bronson) and Dr. Dino Barran (Delon) go their separate ways only to be reunited by an extraordinary coincidence. Barran is persuaded by a friend to sneak into an underground bank vault and help return stolen bonds. While he is hiding, he comes upon Propp who is actually there to rob the safe. After getting locked inside the vault, the two very different men strike up a powerful friendship that binds them together through a series of shocking developments - from a miraculous escape to being framed for murder.

4 out of 5 stars Full screen DVD. Someone tell Lionsgate this is 2007 not 1997. .......2007-07-01

A classic 4 star old style 1960's thriller with good performances from Alain Delon and Charles Bronson. However, do not be fooled by Lionsgate's marketing department DVD cover art, this is in no way a Bronson action film such as The Mechanic, Mr Majestyk, Stone Killer, Death Wish or any number of other 1970's/1980's action rolls Bronson took on. This movie is for one third of its running time, a two man show with Alain Delon and Charles Bronson trapped inside a bank vault with little dialogue at times. Honor Among Thieves is one of four 1968 movies Bronson made in Europe after his big break in The Dirty Dozen the previous year. This one was made in France and as such is very typical of the type of movies being made in that time period. Honor Among Thieves is a small scale thriller reliant on characters with little to no action but does show that Bronson as an actor had more to offer than the simple action man roles that he ended up being type cast in. If you enjoyed other non action Bronson outings such as Twinky, Someone Behind The Door or Cabo Blanco then you will probably enjoy Honor Among Thieves also.

This movie has been out on Region 2 DVD for 3 years now under its European title "Farewell Friend". The Region 2 DVD is from a Studio Canal master with an excellent transfer to DVD with an Aspect Ratio: 1.78:1 Widescreen. This Lionsgate DVD has been presented in full screen.

It's good to see semi-respectable studio releases of some of these lesser know Bronson outings on DVD and perhaps Lionsgate may also get the distribution rights with decent DVD transfers for Rider On The Rain, Guns For San Sabastian, You Can't Win'Em All, Telefon or the two Bronson movies Paramount Pictures hold the rights to, When Hell Broke Loose and Villa Rides. This is 2007, 10 years since DVD first hit the market and still we have not seen DVD releases of Run Of The Arrow, Target Zero or A Thunder Of Drums.

1 out of 5 stars Something that we've read and seen 1000's of times on TV.......2007-01-25

FACE, written by Ronan Bennett, and Directed by Antonia
Bird, received a lot of acclaim back in 1997. While the
movie overall, isn't poor entertainment, it doesn't bring
anything that the public hasn't seen tens of thousands of
times before, on TV, and for free, at that.

Any movie having a made-for-television feel to it, doesn't
bode well for a paid DVD and entry charge theatrical
release. Also, the story seems something that we've read
hundreds of times before in the average book out there,
such that, when we're at the last page we ask ourselves,
why did we waste so much time reading it? There's no
redeeming ending, and the story doesn't really carry
people's imaginations anywhere over 90 minutes. This movie
is a lot like the Airbus A380, except it barely gets off
the ground.

For sure, the actors put in a full day's honest work, and
for that, it's to be respected, however, the overall
movie, same may end up feeling is intended for convicted
felons, considering that the first half, is relatively
boring, TV-like, and the climax, is reminscent of DOOM,
Quake or violent video games, whereby an actual police
station is stormed by the gang, to get their loot back,
which it not exactly realistic, but, as said, may please
a certain element in the public.

In regards to the music, almost all of it is tasteful, if
not overdone, probably wounding the overall movie from
that aspect , by over-commercializing it. e.g. the Clash
is played when the gang drives around the streets of
London, yet who needs to hear the tune, for the 1,000th
time?

The shooting locations, stereotypically dark streets, the
overcrowded and dense neighborhoods, coupled with an
incomprensible mixture of Kurdish political protests in
the streets that is frequently intermixed with other
segments of this police story, is almost laughable, at
worst, and is a distraction, at best, considering most
viewers don't have the political science baggage or even,
the ethnic background to care about it, or grasp it.

Overall, FACE gets a passing grade as a TV movie, but
fares poorly as a DVD and theatrical release for anyone
over 18.

5 out of 5 stars Best of British.......2006-09-18

Robert Carlyle has yet another opportunity to showcase his considerable talent in a great crime thriller. The movie opens with an excellent robbery scene that soon devolves into a clash of greed, personalities, and intrigue. The depth of characterization portrayed is far beyond the typical Hollywood production, and Carlyle is aided considerably by great performances by Ray Winstone, Leana Headley, Steve Waddington, and Damon Albarn. Britain is not a gun culture like the U.S., and toughness is more a case of mana, or "face." The interplay of unemployment, row homes, subsistence-level criminality, and the occasional big score play out to the film's closing moments that include a knuckle-biting burglary attempt inside a police station. "Face" is one of the best Brit offerings in a decade.

5 out of 5 stars There is nothing muddier than mud.......2005-12-15

This film is a thriller of that new type that looks into the gang of criminals and reveals, little by little, that it is a very difficult job to be a criminal and to earn a good living out of it. You have your accomplices you cannot trust. You have those that are finks. You have those who are too greedy. You have those who are too weak to look after themselves. You have those who do not respect instruction. You also have the cops, your parents, your girl friends, you wives and children. What a hard life it is to be a criminal. It looks like some may have reached the right time to withdraw from all that business and retire into some kind of cocoon, far away and alone or nearly alone. The great point in this film is that there is womething new happening absolutely till the end of the film itself. In other words there is absolutely no end to the human ugliness of criminals with other criminals, and all criminals are of course not necessarily those we may think. But they sure must be strong people somewhere to survive such a mess, at least one has to be to survive the mess that crime is. A sad film somewhere but optimistic about the resilience of the human species.

5 out of 5 stars Alyssa Milano is Hot!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-01-28

This movie was one of the best Alyssa Milano movies ever! It was brilliant. The acting was brilliant which I would expect from Alyssa but I was glad to see that the other actors didnt let her down. If you havnt bought this movie yet I strongly advise you do. And as the other reviews have said the twists that occur the whole way through will suprise you even the second or third time you watch it!

5 out of 5 stars Justin Theroux is amazing.......2004-10-30

In Body Count, Alyssa Milano and Ice-T act well and blah blah blah, but Justin Theroux steals the show. When you watch the movie, you will be entranced and amazed by the twist ending. BUY THIS MOVIE!

3 out of 5 stars NICE LITTLE ACTION FILM WITH A CLEVER ENDING.......2003-09-08

DANIEL [JUSTIN THEROUX], WITH HIS GIRLFRIEND [ALYSSA MILANO] VISITS HIS FAMILY FOR THANKSGIVING. BUT DURING DINNER, A VICIOUS GANG OF THIEVES [LED BY ICE-T] BREAK INTO THE HOUSE, KILL OFF DANIEL'S FAMILY, AND STEALS HIS FAMILY'S ART. BEING THAT DANIEL AND HIS GIRLFRIEND ARE TRAPPED IN THE BASEMENT, THEY MUST FIND A WAY TO ELIMINATE THE KILLERS. NOTHING SPECIAL, BUT IT'S AN OK LITTLE ACTIONER. WHAT HAPPENS IN THE END IS TRULY SHOCKING.

5 out of 5 stars Body Count Is A Great Suspence and Action Film........2002-02-10

I rented this movie and I thought it was one of the best movies that I had ever seen. It's a great action film with an all-star cast that keeps wondering what's going to happen next. It is definitely one that I have to add to my movie collection.

4 out of 5 stars Great story, real people and very moving tale.......2006-10-18

"A Bronx Tale" is typical of the great things that are available for viewers that go beyond heavily promoted films to find the little gems available somewhere under the surface. This movie, made on a budget consisting of two shoestrings and a piece of jerkey, has everything a good film should have -- an interesting story, real flesh and blood characters, a superb script, and a wonderful ending.

It's the story of a 19-year-old Puerto Rican in Jersey that needs extra money to fulfill his dream of buying a turntable-broadcast set so he can start his own deejay business. A shoe salesman by day, he takes a part time job with the local Puerto Rican mob boss, a loan shark/drug dealer/pimp to make extra money.

Our hero soon rakes in a few bucks helping steal cars and in similar endeavors. The boss is so pleased with his progress he puts our hero to work watching payroll at a pawn shop owned by an Armenian 70-year-old that just happens to have a $25,000 debt with Mr. Big.

There, our hero begins to see more of life, the pitfalls in his job, and the harm being done in his way of life. These come to a head when the Armenian can't pay his debt and things look bleak.

A few twists later, our hero saves the day and makes good in the end, where a big laugh awaits even the least attentive viewer.

This little film got virtually no notice when it came out in 2004; it is making rounds on digital cable. This movie is a gem in the dungheap of DVD releases. It should be far more well known than it is and the filmmakers should get their due respect for they know what it takes to make a movie where you identify with the characters and want them to make it.

Rent or buy this movie today for a memorable and enduring film experience that is very realistic while also being highly entertaining, emotionally moving, and funny. "A Jersey Tale" is one of the most satisfying films I've seen in months.

5 out of 5 stars Super sleeper!!! What a feel good flick!.......2006-07-06

After missing the first 15 minutes of this film last night on satellite, my wife and I were both drawn into it and loved it. So much so that I just ordered the DVD from Amazon.

Sardina is just perfect as a young, latino salesman who has ambition but also a conscience. The other actors are perfectly cast as well, with Margulies offering a superb performance.

The final few scenes really tie it all together (so I won't devuldge the outcome). Needless to say, you'll feel really good after seeing this flick!

2 out of 5 stars Slow and weak dialogue.......2004-12-13

I found this movie to be slow and plodding. The acting, with the exception of the main character was weak and tired. I expected much better, as I enjoy these types of real life movies.

5 out of 5 stars Jersey Tale is excellent.......2004-10-04

I loved this movie. It has a real authetic feel and the dialogue is riveting. The characters come across as sincere and genuine. I was on the edge of my seat for the You never know where the movie is going to go next. I highly recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars Honor Among Thieves.......2001-05-06

I, personally like this movie, the story is sample but interesting.Specially, the scene that the chief inspector bet with one of the thief for the true story.Unforturnally, the quality of the movie is horible. it's smear, out of focus, and the voice is broken from time to time.I wonder my dvd is original one or a copy? my family really disappoint a lot. my last thing to said is: the story is good, interesting but the quality of movie is awful

1 out of 5 stars Poor quality of a great Movie.......2001-04-20

For me one of the best gangster films ever made this film shows great action with terrific playing stars Charles Bronson and Alain Delon. The quality of this Essex Entertainment/D-vision Edition of the film is horrible. Its somewhere between black and white and coulor picture in the quality of a bad video pirate copy. The voices of the actors seem to sound out of a deep cellar. There are no additional features even no chapter choice or sound setup. Its not worth buying this edition but to hope, that some company is going to remaster the picture and will publish a better edition of this great gangster classic.

            5 out of 5 stars A PSYCOHLOGICAL THRILLER FOR IT'S TIME........2000-02-25

BRONSON & DELON ARE TWO MERCINARIES WHO LEAVE THE ALGERIAN WAR TO LIVE CILVIAN LIFE. WHEN FATE BRINGS THEM TOGETHER AGAIN WHEN THEY ARE TRAPPED IN A PATROL SECURED OFFICE BUILDING. DELON IS TRYING TO MAKE A PROMISE TO A DECESED FRIEND WHILE BRONSON JUST WANTS THE MONEY FROM SAFE LOCATED IN THE BASEMENT. THE CHEMISISTY BETWEEN THE TWO LEADS IS THERE IN THIS TOP NOTCH SUSPENSE THRILLER.

3 out of 5 stars Good film, terrible DVD.......1999-11-23

Bronson and Delon fair much better here than in their second collaboration, Red Sun. But then again, much of Honor Among Thieves has the pair trapped in an office building, which allows for actual chemistry to develop between their respective characters. The interaction between Bronson and Delon add immeasurably to the charms of this cool, low-key thriller. But the Essex/D-Vision DVD is terrible. It looks to be mastered from an old videotape, and maybe not a complete one. Towards the end, there's what seems to be a jump cut. Nothing significant, but annoying if you've seen the film before, giving an odd sense that something is missing.
