When you consider that old-fashioned tearjerkers are an endangered species in Hollywood, a movie like The Notebook can be embraced without apology. Yes, it's syrupy sweet and clogged with clichés, and one can only marvel at the irony of Nick Cassavetes directing a weeper that his late father John--whose own films were devoid of saccharine sentiment--would have sneered at. Still, this touchingly impassioned and great-looking adaptation of the popular Nicholas Sparks novel has much to recommend, including appealing young costars (Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams) and appealing old costars (James Garner and Gena Rowlands, the director's mother) playing the same loving couple in (respectively) early 1940s and present-day North Carolina. He was poor, she was rich, and you can guess the rest; decades later, he's unabashedly devoted, and she's drifting into the memory-loss of senile dementia. How their love endured is the story preserved in the titular notebook that he reads to her in their twilight years. The movie's open to ridicule, but as a delicate tearjerker it works just fine. Message in a Bottle and A Walk to Remember were also based on Sparks novels, suggesting a triple-feature that hopeless romantics will cherish. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars SAME OLD STORY NEVER TOLD SO WELL!.......2007-09-12

This sweet little love story rises above all it's cliches because of the likable stars and story that moves along briskly. The love story in sad enough, but the Alzheimer's angle really tears your heart out! I watched this because my wife wanted to watch it on our anniversary. I was surprised how much I liked it.....so guys don't squirm too much if your babe wants to watch this one, it's a good story and I admired Gosling's tenacity and devotion to his true love. One of the better romances I've seen in a while, so I rate it 4 stars, but it's definitely a 5 tissue movie! This was mostly because of the Alzheimer's part of the film, it's a tragic disease and having dealt with it in my family it was a little too close to home. The DVD transfer looks very good and the are some interesting extras.

5 out of 5 stars BEST.LOVESTORY.EVER. Ryan Gosling is AMAZING!.......2007-08-31

I fell in love with not only this beautiful story but Ryan Gosling!!!! This is just a fantastic movie and I really can't find better words to describe it. Watch it. Own it. Love it forever!! It is my all-time favorite!!

4 out of 5 stars I'm still a sucker.......2007-08-27

...for these tear jerkers. This movie will go down as a romance classic- a forbidden love about two people from the wrong side of the tracks-Romeo and Juliet for the 1940's, if you will. This film hits all my cheesy love spots and turn up aces with me. McAdams/Goslin were great as well as Garner and Rowland. This is a must see for all Chick movie lovers. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars ~Have a box of tissue handy~.......2007-08-08

Although I'm not going to give away any spoilers ... this is a love story like no others. I think that everyone can relate on some level to this movie. You will fall in love with this couple & become drawn in to their story. I recommended this to my mother who after the movie called up crying her eyes out. Even my husband enjoyed this movie. If your looking for a movie that will make you laugh, cry & touch your heart ... this is a must-see.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Tale Well Told.......2007-07-25

If you haven't read the book, the movie will not leave you feeling short changed.

A marvellous story about lovers, life and loss.

Highly recommended.

If you're interested, once you watch the movie, read the book The Wedding - it is the follow up from The Notebook.

Amazon.com essential video

It's difficult to create a film that's fast paced, exciting, and aesthetically appealing without diluting its dialogue. Run Lola Run, directed and written by Tom Tykwer, is an enchanting balance of pace and narrative, creating a universal parable that leaps over cultural barriers. This is the story of young Lola (Franka Potente) and her boyfriend Manni (Moritz Bleibtreu). In the space of 20 minutes, they must come up with 100,000 deutsche marks to pay back a seedy gangster, who will be less than forgiving when he finds out that Manni incompetently lost his cash to an opportunistic vagrant. Lola, confronted with one obstacle after another, rides an emotional roller coaster in her high-speed efforts to help the hapless Manni--attempting to extract the cash first from her double-dealing father (appropriately a bank manager), and then by any means necessary. From this point nothing goes right for either protagonist, but just when you think you've figured out the movie, the director introduces a series of brilliant existential twists that boggle the mind. Tykwer uses rapid camera movements and innovative pauses to explore the theme of cause and effect. Accompanied by a pulse-pounding soundtrack, we follow Lola through every turn and every heartbreak as she and Manni rush forward on a collision course with fate. There were a variety of original and intelligent films released in 1999, but perhaps none were as witty and clever as this little gem--one of the best foreign films of the year. --Jeremy Storey

1 out of 5 stars A stupid film, unimaginative, badly written... with barely one good idea........2007-08-10

This film has some cult following. And I decided to give it a try.

Basically, this is just a "one-idea-film" that would have made a GREAT short feature. Instead, they stretched it into a feature film.

And it is all offensively idiotic.

1 - Lola is at home. Her boyfriend calls her and explains his problem: he forgot some gangster's money on the subway... and some homeless guy found it.

This gives birth to one of the most uninspired explanation scenes in movie History. Who's the bad guy, what was the money for, what will happen if he does not get it back, etc... one stupid phone call that lasts forever with Lola and her dumb boyfriend talking... and talking... and talking...

Halfway through their ridiculous conversation, I'm already thinking: "this guy is sooo stupid and incompetent that I DO WANT him to get killed! I hope Lola gives him the boot!"

But she doesn't. Instead, when he says something idiot like "help me or I'll just rob the supermarket close to this phone booth" (to which I'd simply reply "do it, you stupid punk. Then drop dead!") she just says "I'll be there in twenty minutes and I'll think of something. Don't do anything stupid!" - like if that wasn't the rule so far... LOL

Then I started thinking: "Wow, I can't wait to find out what will she do in order to get the money. I hope she'll do something brilliant".

And what does she do? She runs aaaaallllll the way from home to the bank where her dad works. Exactly: the "running" you see on the title is to daddy!!!

Hello!! Can't we be brilliant and creative?
No.

Daddy (by far the most fascinating character in this film) gives her the boot (hurray!). And she does not get the money. When she meets her stupid boyfriend, the moron is already robbing the supermarket. She helps him and (guess what?!?!?) she gets killed by the police on the way out.

What follows next is (we go back in time) a long and boring bed scene (put there to make some time - so this can be a feature film) where the two lovers are talking... and talking... and talking... for almost 8 minutes things like "do you love me?" "Yes" "How much?" "A lot" "Are you sure?" "I guess so" "So you are not sure?" "I am" "what would you do if I'd die?" "I don't know"... -things like that.

...No wonder why teenagers love this. This is bad teenager screenwriting.

And then we see two variations of the same story:

B) Lola goes to dad and ends up robbing the bank. She gets the money, but this time it is her boyfriend who gets killed (hit by an ambulance).

C)Lola goes to the bank but takes a while longer to get there. Does not find dad and goes to a casino (A CASINO!!!!) that just happens to be there where she gambles some change money and wins all the money she needs... -talk about deus-ex-machina.

Is this supposed to be a masterpiece?
Would someone please explain to me, like if I were a four-year-old child, why is this film so praised.

I do not get it.

5 out of 5 stars intense, fast paced, a mind flip .......2007-07-02

What a great movie? I've loved it since the first time I saw it... eight years ago or so. The sound track gets repepetitive at times .. but it's still a wonderful film.

1 out of 5 stars How did this poorly acted and directed movie get 4.5 stars?.......2007-03-23

Since I'm not a customer here I'm using this kid's forum. I'm not a kid by the way.

Anyways, I don't get why this movie is so highly regarded. It was just the most annoying movie I've ever seen. Basically it's the same story about retrieving a lost bag of money repeated three times. It's not like we needed to see shots of Lola running all the time. There are too many crazy cuts between events that don't seem to make much sense. Also, what's with all those cuts when Lola runs past or bumps into any bystander on the streets? How can she have any insight into the pasts of these people and seriously why do we need to know about them? They're not essential to the story. One more thing is why does Lola scream like such a maniac and why does it shatter glass? These are all just failed attempts to make a good arthouse film. It's a poorly acted and directed film unworthy of the praise it gets.

5 out of 5 stars 6 Stars Out of 5! The Most Creative and Brilliant Movie Since Godard's Breathless in 1960.......2007-03-23

There are very few films that become instant cult classics such as Godard's 1960 Breathless and the less-than-brilliant Pulp Fiction by Tarantino. Run Lola Run in many aspects tops both these movies in its ability to take an incredibly simple plot and turn it into an exgtravaganza of motion, sound and film-making showmanship that redefines filmography and becomes a genre of its own.

Run Lola Run is a brilliant combination of a very talented cast, extremely creative writing and masterful video and sound editing, which results in one of the greatest masterpieces in modern moviemaking history. I am not getting carried away!

Although the movie is sparse with words, it does an incredible job at providing a unique perspective into the characters lives, sometimes with a single sentence or even just a sequence of camera snapshots:
Lola's mother's only sentence in the movie while holding a glass of wine at home: "clearly, I knew your ascendant was Sagittarius.... But you are married too".

Lola's relationship with her father:
Lola: "if I can't get the money, Manni will die".
Father: "Who is Manni?"
Lola: "My boyfriend for a year now".

We also get a glimpse into random characters' lives through a sequence of camera snapshots, sometimes in a humorous way, all interweaving into the main theme which is the stage and play that we're all part of and how sequences of events change the outcome of the end of the play.

Along the plot line there are several humorous winks and tributes to other movies and books which arguably provided some inspiration to parts of the movie. For instance, Lola's ability to shatter glass with her voice is a direct tribute to German author Gunter Grass's The Tin Drum. A silent scene at the casino provides a tribute to Apocalypse Now. The 3 tries plot may have been inspired by Fritz Lang's 1922 Der Mude Tod, etc.

Regardless if you recognize these tributes, Run Lola Run is a captivating movie where every frame and every note of sound seem to be perfectly orchestrated by a maestro who is conducting this fast paced, brilliant symphony.

Film making at its best! Savor it!

5 out of 5 stars Lola's Running .......2007-03-09

I thought this product was awsome, a classic, cheaply priced, and I recieved item way before the delivery date. Recommend buying movies from this seller. This movie was creative (although it was in subtitles), and equally unique from any of the other movies I found over the internet.

The irresistible casting of John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale highlights this predictable romantic comedy, which combines the romantic yearning of An Affair to Remember and the New York charm of You've Got Mail. It all begins "a few years ago," when New Yorker Jonathan (Cusack) meets Brit beauty Sara (Beckinsale). They share a few perfect hours together before parting ways, leaving future encounters to her quirky obsession with fate. "A few years later," they're about to marry their respective fiancés (reluctantly, of course), and urgently hoping for destiny to bring them back together. Under the casual direction of Peter Chelsom (barely recovering from Town & Country), this starry-eyed romance offers no surprises, but it has a comforting familiarity, made warmer by the easy chemistry of the leads, with obligatory best-friend support by Molly Shannon and long-time Cusack pal Jeremy Piven. It's hokey, but die-hard romantics are sure to be forgiving. --Jeff Shannon

A sleeper at the time of its release in 1984, Thom Eberhardt's Night of the Comet has built a small cadre of fans thanks to its breezy performances and blend of comedy and tongue-in-cheek science fiction. Catherine Mary Stewart and Kelli Maroney are thoroughly likable as a pair of San Fernando Valley sisters who find themselves completely alone after the arrival of Halley's Comet reduces their affluent community--and most of Los Angeles--to dust. Their subsequent nonstop shopping spree is soon interrupted by predatory zombies, as well as a sinister scientific cabal (led by cult favorites Mary Woronov and Geoffrey Lewis) with designs on the girls. Stewart and Maroney are terrifically game as the heroines (especially Maroney, whose flair for bubbly comedy was never given another chance on screen), and Robert (Star Trek: Voyager) Beltran is also on hand as a fellow survivor and romantic lead. Fun for '80s enthusiasts and sci-fi fiends who don't mind a little fizz in their end-of-the-world scenarios. -- Paul Gaita

If you want a scarry movie then forget it, for starters is a zombie movie where are less than 10 in all the film. The plot is really weak and you never be sacared.
The good thing...well, if you are fan of Catherine Mary Stewart or the 80`s you will enjoy.

2 out of 5 stars WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO POLISHING A TURD???..........2007-08-24

Don't get me wrong. I looooooooove 'Night of the Comet'. It's one of my favorite B movies of all time, but where are the EXTRAS and at least...at the very, very, ve-rrrry least, give me a decent DVD cover. This one sucks. This type of production is bullcr#p; especially after all of the time I have waited for this!!!

Take for instance `Aqua Teen Colon Movie', that movie bites so hard and yet, it has a massively cool cover and it's TWO discs!!! I don't even have the season sets of Aqua Teen and I'm tempted to buy this movie just so I can see the DVD in my grubby hands. I am so very TIRED of this junk. If you're going to invest the money to bring these cult gems to the marketplace, please, pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeee, pleaseeeeeeee think about adding some kind of "cool factor" to it so I can at least feel good about buying it. Otherwise, keep the freakin' movie in obscurity where it freakin' belongs!!! You idiots!

And one more thing...leave your stupid freakin' distributor logo on the spine of the DVD art where it f'n belongs. Nobody wants to see that crud on every one of the DVD's in their collection. You guys are so stupid and you would think that being in business as long as you have, you'd know something about marketing to a specific demographic by now. At least you didn't slap some idiotic `special unrated extra comety edition' on the cover and a review by some obscure website praising the films nostalgic flavor or the usual garbage. GOD! I hate huge companies that have no respect for marketing. I mean, you could sell a million really really bad movies with just the minimalist of efforts towards your products packaging. You losers!

Anyway, the two stars are for the movie actually being released on DVD after a gazillion years and the negative three stars is for your half baked attempt at packaging this so that it would sell. Which, is to say, there was no attempt at all on your part to entice me therefore, I will ignore this as if it doesn't exist until a company like Anchor Bay can buy the rights and produce something worthy of purchase.

A suggestion to whomever greenlighted the packaging for this gar-bage..."Go jump off a bridge or shoot yourself in the face to correct this heinous of errors". You dolt!

5 out of 5 stars 80's Vally girls kill Zombies.......2007-08-12

I loved this movie when it came out and i loved seeing it again. FUN FUN FUN what more could you want in a sifi movie. Beautiful girls, the Living dead, and the world as your playground.

3 out of 5 stars Shopping Mall of the Apocalypse.......2007-08-11

This movie defies easy description. It mixes a valley girl comedy with a touch of THE OMEGA MAN. Mass population depletion, zombies, mad scientists, and video games; it's all here.

I first saw the movie when it came out in the theater. While I acknowledge that it is cheesy camp, it is fun cheesy camp! As soon as I heard that it was coming out on DVD, I couldn't wait to find a copy. While I am only rating it with three stars, I was tempted to go for four just because of the good memories I had from the film.

Catherine Mary Stewart, who we have seen in other 80s films like THE LAST STARFIGHTER and WEEKEND AT BERNIE'S, is lovely as always. Kelli Maroney plays her sexy younger sister. A young Robert Beltran (STAR TREK VOYAGER'S Chakotay) makes a good early appearance as a trucker who links up with the gun-toting teens.

To be honest, it would probably be a good idea to rent this film first; it isn't going to be everybody's cup of tea. For those who like it though, this is a definite nostalgic buy!

4 out of 5 stars Good ol' 80's fun.......2007-08-04

I watched this movie the first time as a kid. Watching it now I realize how much i've missed it. It may not have been the best 80's movie, but it was fun and it really was what got me first interested in sci-fi. I am happy it is on dvd, and would highly recommend it to anyone.

Inspired by Chris Marker's acclaimed short film La Jetée (which is included on the DVD Short 2: Dreams), 12 Monkeys combines intricate, intelligent storytelling with the uniquely imaginative vision of director Terry Gilliam. The story opens in the wintry wasteland of the year 2035, where a virulent plague has forced humans to live in a squalid, oppressively regimented underground. Bruce Willis plays a societal outcast who is given the opportunity to erase his criminal record by "volunteering" to time-travel into the past to obtain a pure sample of the deadly virus that will help future scientists to develop a cure. But in bouncing from 1918 to the early and mid-1990s, he undergoes an ordeal that forces him to question his own perceptions of reality. Caught between the dangers of the past and the devastation of the future, he encounters a psychiatrist (Madeleine Stowe) who is initially convinced he's insane, and a wacky mental patient (Brad Pitt in a twitchy Oscar-nominated role) with links to a radical group that may have unleashed the deadly virus. Equal parts mystery, tragedy, psychological thriller, and apocalyptic drama, 12 Monkeys ranks as one of the best science fiction films of the '90s, boosted by Gilliam's visual ingenuity and one of the finest performances of Willis's career. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars A great film, and what a "reimagining" should be..........2007-09-03

This is one of Gilliam's best films, and one of his most commercially successful. It's one of the few films I really liked in the 1990's, as it is (as with most of Gilliam's work) a true work of art and something that is totally Gilliamish. It is a sad, haunting, strange work. One of the reasons this film works so well is that the studio left Gilliam alone and let him get on with it. The performances by Bruce Willis, Madeline Stowe, and Brad Pitt are all excellent. Willis is exceptionally good, showing that he can actually act if working with a great director like Gilliam. Stowe brings a tender, quiet quality to her role, and Pitt is great as a borderline insane guy. Some of his dialogue is a bit obvious, but overall it doesn't detract too much from the film. This is a pseudo-remake of Chris Marker's remarkable La Jetee, but Gilliams does it justice. La Jetee is a masterpiece, but then, so is this film. Gilliam really does "reimagine" it, bringing his own distinct voice to the material, and expounding on Marker's masterpiece. Marker recently said he felt this film was wonderful because Gilliam has such a rich imagination (which he does). The ending is quite sad, but it works very well, and kudos to the studio and Gilliam for keeping it in. I always admired Gilliam's film, even his misunderstood Tideland. I think he's one of the great directors. This is one of his best films....

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-06-04

I really liked the movie. One of the best sci-fi movies I have seen. But I have a question. When Madeleine Stowe calls up the number that Bruce Willis is supposed to call, and she reaches a carpet cleaning company she is overjoyed thinking that the virus plague is a hoax after all. She nevertheless leaves a message in the voice mail of that number and recounts it to Bruce Willis who of course has heard it before and repeats the message verbatim even before Stowe could finish telling him. The whole point of the film is that Bruce Willis is reliving the past exactly as it had happened, with him as one of the main protagonist. So what actually happened in 1996? Did Stowe call up the carpet cleaning company? Did she leave a message? If she did and repeated that to Willis did Willis know beforehand what her message was? If he knew, then how did he know? He was NOT time travelling THEN. He was just a little boy of 8 years. And if it was not Willis (Cole) in 1996 who Stowe (Railly) met, then who was it? Because Cole was 8 years old in 1996. Can anybody throw any light?

This 1987 thriller was a predictable hit with the teen audience it worked overtime to attract. Like most of director Joel Schumacher's films, it's conspicuously designed to push the right marketing and demographic buttons, and granted, there's some pretty cool stuff going on here and there. Take Kiefer Sutherland, for instance. In Stand by Me he played a memorable bully, but here he goes one step further as a memorable bully vampire who leads a tribe of teenage vampires on their nocturnal spree of bloodsucking havoc. Jason Patric plays the new guy in town, who quickly attracts a lovely girlfriend (Jami Gertz), only to find that she might be recruiting him into the vampire fold. The movie gets sillier as it goes along, and resorts to a routine action-movie showdown, but it's a visual knockout (featuring great cinematography by Michael Chapman) and boasts a cast that's eminently able (pardon the pun) to sink their teeth into the best parts of an uneven screenplay. --Jeff Shannon

The scare factor was still there but having grown up since my last veiwing I was able to enjoy it and not be completly freaked out.Kiefer Suhterland in my opinion is the jewel of this film as David the leader of the teen vampires he gives an exceptionally creepy preformance and works well opposite of Jason Patrrick who also gives one of his best screen preformances next to Rush of course. This is definaltey cheesy eighties stuff and thats where some of my enjoyment comes from. This edition is loaded with features and a must for any horror fans DVD collection. This movie rocks! It is the coolest of the teenage geek's nightmares. Watch it - if you like me live in a small town that just may have been infiltrated by vampires. It will give you top notch knowledge to defend yourselves. Miss it at your own peril!!! Enough said, it will help you rescue your misguided brothers from the hand of vampires. It will let you know that garlic is not enough; although it does help :-) On the other hand if you want to join the dark side, then by all means do drink the wine and have no fear of the funny so called fried rice. The choice is yours.

4 out of 5 stars "I Was a Teenage Vampire" for the 80s.......2007-07-28

This movie originally hit when I was 17 years old, and there are few times I can think of when I had more fun at the movies. THE LOST BOYS is far from a perfect movie, but it didn't have to be. Rich in atmosphere, kinetic and sexy, this is probably the most entertaining vampire flick to come around until INTERVIEW was released a decade and a half later.

Here's the setup: Santa Clara is crawling with vampires. Missing children posters decorate the streets like some unholy Christmas arrangement. Enter Corey Haim, a young teenager just moving into town with his older brother, dog, and single mom. And if this kid thinks his grandfather is a little weird, wait until he meets the neighbors ...

THE LOST BOYS is a study of both good and bad acting. Highlighting the film are Keifer Sutherland, Jason Patrick, Diane Wiest, the manager at the video store, and the elderly gent who plays the eccentric grandfather (who also gets the last, and best, line in the movie). Our two Coreys (that is, Haim and Feldman) are pretty bad, but at least Corey Feldman was sort of over-the-top-gloriously bad, instead of just plain bad ... that is to say, Corey Haim.

The first hour of the movie is the better half--or at least the more frightening. As Sutherland (the main vampire) exerts a growing influence over Jason Patrick (the older brother), the movie swims in dark colors, 80's vamp rock, and punk-leather costume design. Shortly after Patrick drinks Sutherlands blood, the two Coreys take over the movie completely, and Joel Schumacher's horror movie becomes a campy, action vampire flick (think squirt guns with holy water and lines like "First come, first staked!"). Funny? Usually. But I liked the movie when it was being scary.

Despite its flaws, I'll always be grateful for THE LOST BOYS and its influence on my own writing, but I'm still waiting for the perfect modern vampire movie. This, almost, was it.

It's only in retrospect that one can see that Joe Dante's Explorers is an awful lot like Robert Zemeckis's Contact. An alien race, determined to make contact with earthlings, feeds some unsuspecting individuals the blueprints for space travel. Instead of the big gyroscope that Jodie Foster was strapped into in Contact, the three kids in Explorers make their intergalactic trip in crystalline blue Flubber. River Phoenix looks shockingly prepubescent (which he was) as Wolfgang, the brains of the trio, while Ethan Hawke looks like a young lady-killer as Ben. Fitting into the "whatever happened to?" category is Jason Presson as Darren, an outcast who joins the two eggheads. Joe Dante's career, cruising after Gremlins was a smash, faced a serious "hitch in the giddyup" when this film sputtered through the 1985 summer season without much of an impact. The effects still hold up nicely, as does Dante's incessant need to pay homage to other, older sci-fi films. The whole thing seems like a lot of trouble for some smackingly bland and silly results, but it's a harmless, initially involving diversion. --Keith Simanton

5 out of 5 stars Three soulmates, two aliens and a spaceship in a pear tree........2007-08-15

I fell in love with this film when I first saw it some time ago in spite of the ending. The first two thirds of the film is really great, showing good potential for a real sci-fi kids film.

This is the type of movie you watch just to escape from life. River Phoenix, Ethan Hawkes and Jason Presson, play three soulmates, who meet in life, and go on an amazing journey into space. The boys share their dream states with each other, allowing them to receive alien technology from outer space, via their dreams. This results in them building a space craft using advanced transport ability to visit beings from another world who call to them. How they get there is allot of fun.

It starts first when they learn how to build a "static-antigravity warp bubble", for lack of a better expression, that they can house themselves in for space travel. The creatures they meet and the message those beings have to bring to all of us, the audience, is best seen, not talked about in this review or I'll give the story away. This part of the story proved to be a bit of a let down given the way the film was going two thirds into it all. It kept a very serious down to earth tone until the aliens showed up making the whole thing a comedy in the last third of the film. In spite of this I still give it 5 stars as the first 2/3rds of the film make it great sci-fi before it takes on a camp turn in the formula.

Otherwise, if you remember being this age, when you flew in your dreams and dared to achieve great things, you'll enjoy this movie. It's great fun for the entire family in my book. The boys do a great job with the acting as well. Very down to earth for a way out space adventure type of film.

5 out of 5 stars Explorers.......2007-07-20

My kids always liked this movie and I thought my grandson might like it also.

5 out of 5 stars 3 kids... acting like kids... 1 really smart one.......2007-07-19

One kid has a dream of a giant circuit board.
There is a blue glowing ball that is air tight that a genuis kid can control.
They want to go to outerspace; so, they attempt to.

Some of the music in this movie is fantastic.

This is a movie better-suited for younger kids... Like 14 and under... maybe somewhere around there.
The ending is quicker than you're going to want it to be.
Great movie for kids.

4 out of 5 stars Good.......2007-07-11

This movie was very well-done. It's the kind of thing that can't be out dated even though it's sci-fi. All the actors did a great job and it was creative as well as entertaining to watch.

5 out of 5 stars A must see!!!.......2007-07-08

The Amazon reviewer must have been on something when he reviewed "Explorers". It is nothing like "Contact", which is entirely humorless. I saw "Explorers" with my kids and all of us loved it; it's one of those films that both parents and kids can like (I had to watch SO MANY idiotic flicks with them, to watch this was heaven!). It is quite an intelligent film, and it makes some good, solid satirical points at the same time never losing its sense of fun. It is an absolutely delightful flick. If you have young ones, see it with them. I couldn't remember the title of this flick or who was in it, so I went to "e-opinions" looking at lists of best 10 kids films that others had sent in. The same old stuff. None mentioned this film.

I haven't seen this film in years, but still remember scenes from it. They just stay with you. It is one of those neglected films that are deserving of more of an audience. Toss Disney overboard! See "Explorers"!!!!

When Unbreakable was released, Bruce Willis confirmed that the film was the first in a proposed trilogy. Viewed in that context, this is a tantalizing and audaciously low-key thriller, with a plot that twists in several intriguing and unexpected directions. Standing alone, however, this somber, deliberately paced film requires patient leaps of faith--not altogether surprising, since this is writer-director M. Night Shyamalan's daring follow-up to The Sixth Sense. While just as assured as that earlier, phenomenal hit, Unbreakable is the work of a filmmaker whose skill exceeds his maturity, its confident style serving a story that borders on juvenile. However, Shyamalan's basic premise--that comic books are the primary conduit of modern mythology--is handled with substantial relevance.

Willis plays a Philadelphia security guard whose marriage is on the verge of failing when he becomes the sole, unscathed survivor of a devastating train wreck. When prompted by a mysterious, brittle-boned connoisseur of comic books (Samuel L. Jackson), he realizes that he's been free of illness and injury his entire life, lending credence to Jackson's theory that superheroes--and villains--exist in reality, and that Willis himself possesses extraordinary powers. Shyamalan presents these revelations with matter-of-fact gravity, and he draws performances (including those of Robin Wright Penn and Spencer Treat Clark, as Willis's wife and son) that are uniformly superb. The film's climactic revelation may strike some as ultimately silly and trivial, but if you're on Shyamalan's wavelength, the entire film will assume a greater degree of success and achievement. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Good Movie.......2007-09-12

I just love M Night Shyamalan's movies. They keep you spellbound and that is exactly what "Unbreakable" does. I would recommend this movie to everyone who likes to sit on the edge of their seat.

5 out of 5 stars In a class of its own!.......2007-07-15

How does one classify this movie? Some might call it a drama, as the slow pacing, muted emotions, lack of comedy, and modern, urban setting all fit the descriptions of many modern dramas. Some might call it a fantasy; a reluctant superhero discovered by his arch-enemy who knows no bounds. The former has strength beyond his knowledge, while the latter uses cunning to overcome his physical limitations. Others might call it a suspense movie, as it has all the hallmarks of a classic suspense; good guys and bad guys are only sorted out at the end, and the audience discovers things as the protagonist does. Maybe it is a combination of all three genres, another achievement from the M. Knight Shamalayan.

However one might classify this movie, it is an incredible piece of story-telling. Its as if Shamalayan wrote a traditional fairy tale, set it in a modern American city, and then reversed all the normal rules of fairy tales. First of, the premise of superhero ignorant of his own destiny is a common starting point; think of Harry Potter, X-Men, and Frodo Baggins in Lord of the Rings. But the heroes in these stories are all young, at the beginning of their lives. Bruce Willis's character here, David, is old, past middle age most likely, and looking back on his glory years. Second, heroes needs to be revealed unintentionally, through accident or fate. David is discovered by both accident and fate. Accident put him on a train, but fate assured him to survive. Third, each hero needs a weakness. Superman had kryptonite, Batman had his past and Spiderman has his loved ones. But water, who would ever imagine water to be the one weakness of David? Last, all heroes need an antagonist, that villian they must stop. But here, it is the villian who seeks out the hero, helps him find his power, and finally, guarantees the hero's victory by sealing his own doom.

Overall, this was a great movie. For the budget it was made one, with the cast it starred, it delivers a great story with heart and soul. Its setting is modern, yet the storyline is more mythical than anything else. The conceptual background of comicbooks contrasts nicely with the plot itself. I highly recommend this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Unbeatable!.......2007-06-12

Although Shyamalan's "Sixth Sense" perhaps had more chills and more of a classic twist-ending - I personally think "Unbreakable" is his best film. I'm not sure if you would call it's ending a "twist," but it made me gasp when it suddenly brought a whole landscape of emotion into focus with an amazing depth of field.

Furthermore, this movie has one of the most interesting characters I've ever seen on screen. Samuel L. Jackson plays a precise and learned art dealer with a special affinity for original classic comic book drawings. His genetic affliction limits the physical activity he can engage in, but his imagination has always been free to entertain strange possibilities. This truly is an original portrayal that could never typecast Jackson. His role is not as romantic lead, not as supporting character actor, not as doctor, lawyer, merchant... It's what he is that in the end creates the shock of brilliant resolution.

This is a movie whose intricacies will haunt you long after the fact. And even if you never had any interest in comic books, you will probably walk away from `Unbreakable" with a new respect for what Joseph Campbell might call their "power of myth."

One word about the availability of this film - I see a lot of the single-disc versions of it are available only in "Region 2" DVD format. You would need a "Multi-Region" or "Universal" DVD player to play these versions. As I understand it, all DVD players are manufactured with the capability of playing all DVDs. However, the players are then set by distributors to play in only one region, most often the US/Canada Region 1 - in order to block overseas bootlegging versions and other illicit overseas offerings.
There are on-line sites presumably listing decoding sequences that will allow you to "unlock" your specific DVD player so it will play all regions. However most people I've talked with have found these decoding sequences don't work. This can be frustrating because it seems an increasing number of English or foreign movies and comedy series are being offered only in non-Region 1 formats lately.
So if you want to buy one of the single-disc Region 2 versions of "Unbreakable" listed on this website, you might need to consider buying a "Multi-Region" DVD player on-line, or else you might want to go to an ethnic neighborhood (such as an East Indian community) in a large city to find a Multi-Region player.

4 out of 5 stars For Real Comic Book Fans.......2007-06-05

Unbreakable is about the mythology behind comic book superheroes and the purposes that each of us have in life. The film opens with the birth of a baby boy with all four of his limbs broken. He is Elijah Price, who is played by Samuel L. Jackson, and he has type I OI or brittle bone disease. As his life goes on, he gets the nickname of "Mr. Glass" as up the point of present time in Unbreakable, Elijah had broken bones in his body 57 times. Elijah is motivated early on to socialize in some capacity by his mother and his primary interest becomes comic books. As he gets older he soon begins to question what the reason is for his own existence and comes to the conclusion that if people like him exist with his weakness, then surely there must be someone on the other end of the spectrum with massive strengths. Elijah believes there is nothing scarier than to live life without knowing your purpose and he makes the assertion that there are in fact real-life superheroes.

Bruce Willis plays David Dunn, a security officer, who, unlike Elijah, is trying to find his own purpose in life. He gave up his football career for his wife but now his marriage is falling apart. David survives a train wreck that kills 131 people, and he is the only survivor. He was completely unharmed. Elijah believes David to be a real superhero and gradually confronts David with his theory. David's son Joseph believes Elijah and assists David in finding out more about his potential powers. Just to add, I'm of the opinion that it is an absolute pleasure to watch Willis and Jackson act in pretty much anything.

As with any M. Night Shyamalan film, giving too much away is hugely detrimental to the experience and please know that this film is entirely worth going into with no more information then I have already provided. What Shyamalan has done here in retrospect, while considering the recent onslaught of big-budget comic book movies, is create a completely unconventional yet convincing adaptation of comic book heroes' origins. At the same time Unbreakable celebrates the mythology behind these fictional characters. It takes a profound imagination to come up with a screen
