Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids - The Original Animated Series, Vol. 1 .......2007-06-08

This series is great for teaching Character Education. You have the concept/Character Trait, then the story centered around the topic/concept, followed by music.
This a a great teaching tool!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT RELEASE WITH CD SOUNDTRACK INCLUDED WHERE IS VOL. 3?.......2007-04-18

This is a great release of a classic cartoon series. I love that they added the cd with all the songs from these episodes. What happened to vol. 3 It was to be released and it disappeared? Bummer!

5 out of 5 stars Fat Albert & The Cosby Kids - Vol. 1.......2007-03-19

The tape came in perfect brand new condition. My grandson loved it -
good, funny family entertainment. Excellent!!
We will eventually get the other volumes.

5 out of 5 stars Fat Albert, Vol. 1.......2007-01-05

I like the animation, I like the characters, the stories usually have a moral and are very entertaining. It makes me wish I knew who the kids were that inspired these stories, assuming they are kids who grew up with Bill Cosby in Philadelphia.............

4 out of 5 stars Weeba likeba the Fat Albert showba.......2006-03-15

The storylines are great and the shows are very entertaining. Unlike most of cartoons on television today, these episodes are very wholesome and you don't need to worry about your kids hearing inappropriate language. My 11 and 8 year old kids like the shows but they don't crave them like some of the other DVDs we have. In the words of my children, "They're pretty good." We all like the uniqueness of each character. The only down side of each show is the music with the moral message at the end. No one in my house is crazy about them. That being said, I think there is a strong possibility we will buy the second season.

Explosive performances by Ike & Tina Turner, Wilson Pickett, Santana, the Staple Singers, and others power Soul to Soul, the filmed documentary of a 1971 concert by American artists in Accra, Ghana. There's some great music here, with versions of "Land of 1000 Dances" (Pickett), "When Will We Be Paid" (the Staples), and "The Price You Gotta Pay to Be Free" (jazzmen Les McCann and Eddie Harris, who also feature the amazing African musician Amoah Azangeo) that are as good or better than anything found on other concert films from the period, including Wattstax and Woodstock. But witnessing this predominantly black group of Americans as they respond to being in Africa for the first time is fascinating and moving as well (check out the uncontained emotion of Ike Turner, just one of the nine folks who supplied voice-over commentary for the DVD, to see just how profound an experience it was), to say nothing of the sometimes bemused, often ecstatic response of the African audience. 5.1 surround notwithstanding, the sound can be a little dodgy, but the remastered, restored film, which includes plenty of non-concert documentary footage (including a trip to a seaside "castle" from which slaves were shipped across the Atlantic) looks good, and what's on the film looks first rate. --Sam Graham

On March 6, 1971, some of the greatest artists in popular music history traveled from the United States to Ghana, West Africa, to take part in a 14-hour musical celebration, Soul To Soul. Over 100,000 enthusiastic locals gathered for this unique cultural exchange between two continents. This award-winning film combines classic concert performances with scenes documenting the artists getting in touch with their roots as they return to the cultural motherland. SOUL TO SOUL chronicles this historic event and is considered by many to be one of the greatest music films of all time. Now available for the first time on DVD, this 2-disc set features the 95-minute, full-length feature film, newly remastered and restored from the original 35mm negative by the Grammy Foundation. The second disc features a remastered and expanded original soundtrack (also making its debut on CD), including performances not featured in the film.

5 out of 5 stars It was great -but no Roberta Flack.......2007-05-16

I didnt see Roberta Flack on this video. It is a misleading item. The headliner is Tina Turner or Wilson Pickett. Nevertheless is is a great video of an old music festival in africa.

5 out of 5 stars No hype, truly a legendary concert film.......2004-12-29

I still have the soundtrack LP I purchased more than 30 years ago. I did not see the original film. The DVD release is an absolute joy. It is as much an educational documentary as it is a profound musical experience. Yes, I am disappointed the Roberta Flack performances were deleted, but the balance of what is provided is thoroughly satisfying.

5 out of 5 stars For IKE & TINA TURNER fans.......2004-11-11

I have to say this was a great show to watch; The intro was a great attention getter. I mean, if you're an Ike & Tina fan, like I am, then you got to get this video/DVD. Watching Tina & the Ikettes dancing from this 1971 film makes it clear to me where a lot of today's artisit get the desire to dance in front audiences, at least got it indirectly. Hip shaken and everything--did TV even show those kind of moves back then? Well with the exception of James Brown of course. And as most Ike & Tina fans know, there isn't that much legit footage of their performances. So this is worth getting for Ike & Tina viewing only. I was kind of disappointed that Santana wasn't shown much; although their performance of Black Magic Women was great. THe guiter sounds and intensity, it was great. I liked watching the energy of the Voices of East Harlem. I never even heard of them before watching the DVD. The young singer on that DVD was like another MIchael Jackson of that day. This kid was even doing the moon walk way before Michael. For the DVD, the commetary was good. You get to hear Ike Turner speaking w/ Les McCann about where his ideas fit in for his reveue, interesting. One thing to note, is that the Guanians (?) new who Wilson Pickett was; it's like they only came to see him, and no one else. The last performance of the film shows Picket singing land Of 1000 dances--wow! I mean the audiance went crazy. Watching them dance gets you energized. They start flying over the stage--mosh pit, I think. It's like everything done today by muscians really isn't something just invented, it's been around for years. You can also tell by the African dancers. Man, they really had it--I mean it's just soul, and they show it.

5 out of 5 stars Roberta Flack denied her permission to be included!.......2004-10-26

Sadly, Roberta Flack denied permission to the filmmakers to include her or her wonderful music in this dvd release. A real loss for all of us. However, the film is still a classic and worthy of inclusion in all serious film and music libraries.

2 out of 5 stars Incomplete!.......2004-10-19

Roberta Flack is conspicuously missing from both the DVD
and CD releases. I have the original LP soundtrack, and
saw the original film, both of which included her great
performances. I don't know if this was her decision or the
filmmakers, but you cannot call this the ORIGINAL film.

Larry Cohen scratched out some of the most memorably offbeat exploitation films of the 1970s, including two of the most energetic blaxploitation action classics: Black Caesar and its sequel, Hell Up in Harlem, which made a star of Fred Williamson. In 1996 they reunited for this tribute to the good old days and producer-star Williamson brought along a few of his fellow 1970s blaxplo icons: Jim Brown (Slaughter), Pam Grier (Foxy Brown), Richard Roundtree (Shaft), and Ron O'Neal (Superfly). They play old friends and former members of a neighborhood gang in economically depressed Gary, Indiana, who reunite when a new generation of gangbangers using their old street name, the Rebels, turns the city into a war zone. It's great fun to see the old faces back on the screen--Williamson is still buff and tough, and Brown and Grier have become more charismatic with age--but they're let down by a slack script and lazy direction despite an almost nonstop barrage of gunfights and back-alley brawls. Even with revved-up 1990s firepower, the film never really captures the explosive energy of the films that made their reputations. You're better off seeing the originals. Paul Winfield and Isabel Sanford also star, and Cohen casts cult faves Charles Napier, Wings Hauser, and Robert Forster in supporting roles. --Sean Axmaker

Description

The biggest and baddest stars of Soul Cinema, Fred Williamson (Black Caesar), Jim Brown (Slaughter), Pam Grier (Foxy Brown), Ron O'Neal (Superfly) and Richard Roundtree (Shaft) return to the genre that made them famous in this "big, brassy, overblown, pyrotechnic valentine" (Entertainment Today)! Also featuring Isabel Sanford ("The Jeffersons") as Bookman's mother, this all-new, all-action tale of slick, ten-fisted retribution "delivers as generous a measure of sensational entertainment as any of the Shaft or Superfly pictures of a generation ago" (Long Beach Press-Telegram). Williamson is Bookman, a former hood who made it to the big time with his smooth football moves. But when the gang he founded back in his hometown starts shooting up the wrong peopleincluding his fatherhe returns to the old turf, rounds up some of his own posse and begins an all-out street war to return the neighborhood to its rightful state of justice!

4 out of 5 stars This was one helluva reunion!.......2007-07-12

You couldn't ask for too much more of a black all star cast than this. You've got Jim Brown, Fred Williamson, Pam Grier, Ron O'neal and Richard Roundtree battling modern day gangs. They're kicking butt and taking names later. Paul Winfield and Isabel Sanford did pretty good as well in one of their last performances in movies. May their souls rest in peace. This is a good one to have in your collection.

3 out of 5 stars A Good Idea but a Weak Storyline.......2007-03-31

I really wanted this movie to be great. I really felt that it had the potential. And you know, it started out pretty good. But the longer the movie goes the weaker it got. It was almost like they started with half a script and when theu got to the end of that they just winged the rest.

The premise of the film is that a gang called the rebels had pretty much taken over the streets of this urban Indiania neighborhood. They are extremely bad and horrifically violent and refuse to let anyone get in their way. One citizen see's one of the gang kill a high school basketball star and calls the cops. The gang retailiates by trashing his store, beating him up, shooting him, and leaving him for dead. Enter John Bookman.

Bookman (Fred Williamson) is the son of the shop owner, an ex-NFL football star, and, it turns out, the original leader of the rebels some 30 years ago. He returns home to find a war zone. After failing to start a dialog with the gang with the help of the local preacher (Paul Winfield) he turns to his old comrads-in-arms to try and take back the streets.

Joined by his best friend from the gang days (Jim Brown), who has his own demons to over come (the son he never knew had just been killed by the gang) they begin to orchestrate a neighborhood revolt. Joining them is Brown's old girlfriend and the mother of his son (Pam Grier), and a couple of ex-gang members (Richard Roundtree, Ron O'Neal).

Here is where the problems begin for this movie. After this great set-up it starts to deteriorate into just pure violence. A previous reviewer says this movie has a "deep message." What's the message, that you have to become as vicious and brutal as the gang you're trying to stop? We see people being executed with a bullet to the brain, burned, having their necks snapped, knifed, beaten with baseball bats, and just gunned down in a all-out hail of gunfire. As the heroes continue their onslaught we see that in the end, they really are no less violent and brutal as the gang. In the final scenes we find Williamson & Brown in a fight with the two current gang leaders while a rival gang looks on. Once they dispose of the hoodlums finally the police, missing completely during the firefight, show up. What started out good ended silly. What a shame.

I would recommend this only to those who are either into Blaxploitation movies or if you have about 100 minutes to kill. Not bad but just could have been SO much better

5 out of 5 stars Origanal Gangstas.......2006-02-02

This movie took me back to my younger days. It was packed with action, with a deep message. I really injoyed the movie and I watch it all the time.

5 out of 5 stars mark twain sam australia WA Perth.......2006-01-13

I personally think that this is one of or if not the best film that Fred Williamson has done. I liked the fight scenes that were very well put together and each fight scene had a bit of realism to it.

Williamson is John Bookman, a former hood who made it to the big time with his smooth football skills. But when the gang that he had created/founded back in his hometown starts shooting at members of his family - including his father - he returns to his old turf, meets with his old partners in crime and walks into an all-out street war to clean up his neighborhood to its rightful state of justice! Now it is old school versus new school in this action packed kick-ass flick.

4 out of 5 stars The veteran cast from Blaxploitation makes this worth watching.......2005-10-21

A veteran cast make this update of the blaxploitation genre worth watching. Fred Williamson (Black Caeser), Jim Brown (Slaughter), Pam Grier (Coffy/Foxy Brown), Richard Roundtree (Shaft) and Ron O' Neal (Superfly) join forces to combat the newer, younger version of the same gang they formed twenty years prior.

Description

The Beauty Shop is UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT and the new owner's name is "BIG MAMA LUCILLE." `Big Mama' is actually not so big because she's a sassy, sexy and flirtatious midget with all the elements that a beauty shop owner could ever ask for. Her shop is loaded with gossip, craziness and cat-fights…not to mention the outrageous characters that work for her. The daily issues that arise in the shop range from adultery and bad hygiene to dirty talk and bachelorette parties. As usual, in this Beauty Shop there's hysterical laughter, dynamic singing and surprises galore. This is not a gospel stage play, but rather a side-splitting, comedic production; an evening of non-stop laughter and just like the original, "BEAUTY SHOP" is total entertainment.

4 out of 5 stars Long Time Coming.......2007-08-21

This show has been around a long time. Because of it many other Black artists found an outlet to do their thing. So, for its root of all things status I believe it deserves 4 stars. It's not the great work of the stage that we are all waiting for. But, it's not a bad way to spend a couple of hours. Pleasant watching.

Full of fun and laughter from start to finish.
Good sentiment, music and mirth. Great characters with actors that sparkle and shine. Excellent performances that bring the story to life.
I bought many copies to send to friends and family who may have missed this gem

1 out of 5 stars Even as a play alone it's pretty bad.......2006-03-14

What's the point?

I have a particular fondness of theatre, but the best part of theatre is being there. This movie tries hard to give that experience by showing reaction shots of the audience, but it's not the same.

Some stage shows are open enough and large enough to translate well into a filmed narration without changing sets or adapting. This isn't one of them. In fact, even as a play alone it's pretty bad. The characters are one-dimensional caricatures, the script is lousy, most of the acting is pretty bad, and it doesn't really have a storyline... really...

The only part that's even remotely interesting is the scene where Big Mama wears the zebra suit and the cast just loses control and completely breaks the fourth wall. Yet even still that moment would be a lot more special and a lot more endearing had I actually been there than have to rely on shoddily shot video editing to tell me where to look.

All in all, it was a pretty ridiculous experience, not worth even the price of a rental.

3 out of 5 stars Ok but not her best stuff.......2007-07-19

I bought this for my wife who loves Queens of comedy (I didn't think it was that funny), but anyway Adele has a few moments where her material is funny, but overall it's lacking.

4 out of 5 stars NOT AS GOOD AS I THOUGHT BUT STILL FUNNY.......2004-11-25

She's such a f****** lady! Adele Givens is one of the most funniest women in comedy today. This DVD is funny but not what I expected. I thought I was going to be laughing till my stomach hurts but it's still funny.

2 out of 5 stars Sound Quality not good, and not all that funny, but ok.......2004-10-09

I got so sick and tired of hearing her say "I'm such a F'ng lady." Hearing that the first couple of times was okay, but she would keep saying it and it got old real fast. The sound on the DVD was not good. The sound seemed like this was recorded using a tape recorder. I had to really turn the volume up on my TV to hear her routine. I did not really start to laugh a lot until the end of her set. The last 20 min, was when she started getting really comical. She talks about being upset the sniper was a Blackman. She calls herself a COP = Citizen on Patrol (I found that worth a few chuckles). She discusses current events such as terrorism, not being afraid to fly after 9/11, her relationship with her grandmother, and motherhood. She has Rules for her money (again I kind of chuckled).

The topic I did enjoy hearing her talk about was Out of Control Kids. That part of her routine was entertaining. I also enjoyed her Celebrities as criminals routine. She talked about Randy Mos, Dionne Warrick, and Jason Williams, and how they are people with so much money, but doing stupid things to have them end up in the jail. Of course no female comic routine would be complete without discussions about the opposite sex. The extras were pretty nice. She read two of her poems that she wrote, and they were really nice. One was titled "This is how I talk."

I revised my rating from a 2 to a 3. I revised my rating after one of my friends rented the DVD and I had not choice but to watch it while at a party. I still don't see myself wanting to buy or renting this myself again. It was okay, but still not as funny as it could have been.

So my rating is now a 3.

5 out of 5 stars She's such a F?>'in Lady!!!!!!!!.......2004-05-28

Get your laugh on. Adele Givens is halarious. She is "The Original Queen", Of comedy of course.

5 out of 5 stars This is Great........2004-03-17

Adele Givens is one of my favorite female comics today. Not only does she talk about real issues going on in america but she also makes it funny.. She talks about Sept. 11, 2001, paying too much money for clothes, watches, etc. (Brands like Gucci, Rolex, etc.) I love how she talks about music and states that Khia's "My neck, my back" is something you don't want your kids to sing. Anyways, this dvd is full of laughs, reality checks, etc. This is a must own

5 out of 5 stars Patterns - PROVES GREED WAS GOOD BEFORE WALL STREET - AN AWESOME TRANSFER TOO!.......2006-11-05

This DVD proves that Greed Was Good in Big Business long before the Movie Wall Street's now infamous phrase "Greed Is Good!". Mr Ramsey of Ramsey Companies is a brutally driven man small in stature but gigantic in his business domain he rules like a tyrant! Flanked by his pocket shark an equally heartless cold fish head office manager named Ms Lannier whose job it is see things get done to Mr Ramseys liking. Ms Lannier is totally business like in ways ruthless and effcient also patrols the corporate executive halls of Ramsey Company making sure everyone is fully engaged in towing their part of the corporate load.

There's the rub, one member of Ramsey's executive staff one Mr. Briggs is definately NOT pulling what Ramsey feels is his part of the corporate load. Ramsey made sure something was done quietly to address the situation involving a faltering doddering unsatisfactory efforts of Mr Briggs. That nice Mr. Staples a from a factory out in the corn midwest somewheres a man who is an Industrial Engineer by profession and people person by instinct was hired to help failing Mr. Briggs supposedly as an assistant! But are things ever what they seem in business NOPE!

It is later revealed that Mr Staples is Mr. Briggs replacement and then the dye is cast. Mr Ramsey rides Briggs without mercy never letting up on beating down poor old Mr Briggs for even one moment. This is class corporate warfare where the object is to destroy your enemies with pen, ink and properly used words. Ramsey was ably helped by his hench-woman Ms lannier who spread thick the bloody chum of rumours that suggested that Briggs days at the Ramsey Company firm were numbered best in smaller single digits.

Ramsey the consumate corporate shark swim circles around old skool trusting kind Mr Briggs a throwback to the humane gentility of a bygone day. Ramsey an middle aged man himself embraced the new cut throat bigger is better and do anything to get bigger business mantality. To Ramsey Briggs was a fossil touting old world corporate virtues of loyal to workers when Ramsey wanted a hard cold bootom line oriented plan to grow the company andif workers had to suffer along the way so be it if their suffering makes the company bigger, stronger and hence more competitive.

Staples was the man with the plans Ramsey wanted to hear and Ramsey said so to Briggs at every turn. Ramsey really lays into Briggs with a gusto only a saddist could love, I mean this was mean so bad I think it would turn stomachs in todays borad rooms. Briggs body falling apart driven to hard drinking first thing in the morning and in secret at work and home is a broken man. Briggs however has a pair and as such will not let Ramswy just force him out like a used shoe. What happens next. Will Briggs finally get the message and leave. Will Mr Staples a genuinely nice man stay with Ramsey and company after seeing the perfectly evil things Ramsey will do to force Briggs out.

Man this is an awesome DVD and to find out all those things you mustbuy the DVD it is worth it and then some.

I will address the quality of the transfer before ending. the quality of this transfer is the best I have seen. I have seen the Kenetiscope version that was done for TV which is horrible, scratchy, too white uneven grainy beyond beleif and sound quality I would not wish on anyone. I saw a VHS version that was only barely passable. This DVD version is by FAR superior when compared to both the VHS and the Keniscope versions I have seen. This version of patterns is not perfect but it is so much better than everything else I have seen under this title that if I were you I'd grab this DVD of Patterns while it is available at Amazon.com like I did. I would not be a Happy Wolf Dude without a good qaulity DVD copy of patterns in my collection.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent movie - a must see.......2006-09-25

I first heard of the story "Patterns" during a PBS documentary on the life and work of Rod Serling. The premise sounded quite interesting, so when I heard there was a film version of "Patterns" available on DVD, I just had to have it.

The Roan Group did an excellent job in putting together this DVD version of "Patterns." While the picture quality isn't perfect, it in no way distracts from the high quality of the acting, especially the roles played by Van Heflin, Ed Begley Sr. and Everett Sloane.

Unlike some films set in the corporate world, the characters in "Patterns" are not one-dimensional suits looking only to climb the corporate world. They're real people who are interesting to watch as they each live their lives and conduct their business. Even the secretaries are interesting.

Everett Sloane as Mr. Ramsey is by far, the best ruthless boss character I have ever seen in a movie, even more so than Lionel Barrymore as Mr. Potter in "It's A Wonderful Life." What makes Everett Sloane so convincing is that many people have likley had a work boss almost exactly like him. Someone who can't simply be described as greedy, but rather as hard-nosed and strict as a task master.

The ending of "Patterns" is fascinating, because it begs the question, if you were in the shoes of the Van Heflin character, what would you do?

The only reason I'm giving this DVD four stars instead of five, is that the Roan Group has added a few things in their extras which have practically nothing to do with the actual movie. Other than that, this DVD is excellent. Lou Lumenick and Lloyd Kaufman's commentaries about "Patterns" are first rate.

SEE THIS FILM IF YOU HAVEN'T!!! I promise, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Patterns- the movie version.......2005-12-21

This film is a superb piece of work. The direction is solid and riveting, and the casting is excellent. Every actor contributes in a major way and adds to the tension and saddness as the story unfolds. Everett Sloane and Ed Begley are the foundation for this film, and I would say that this movie is probably Van Heflin's finest (as Fred Staples). I only wish the "live" television version (Kraft Television Theatre) was available, for Richard Kiley was the definitive Fred Staples. Since the television performance was "live," it added to the tension and intimacy of the actors, and the build-up from the beginning was electric.

5 out of 5 stars Made Rod Serling A Name In Television.......2005-11-22

PATTERNS was Rod Serling's breakthrough in television, earning him a much deserved Emmy and industry recognition. This 1956 teleplay, directed by Fielder Cook, was so popular it was the first ever television show to be broadcast a second time.

PATTERNS is an uncompromising morality tale about the Machiavellian world of Big Business. Fred Staples (played by Van Heflin) is the new guy suddenly transferred from somewhere in Ohio to the company's New York headquarters. Staples soon discovers that the company head, Walter Ramsey (Everett Sloane), is intending to use him as a replacement for the kind-hearted-but-aging vice-president, William Briggs (Ed Begley). Ramsey places no value on the virtues of friendship or loyalty. The only things mattering to him is the company's production and profit. Staples sees things differently. Briggs had befriended him and he refuses to surrender his values to his ambition and go along with the cutthroat tactics of his boss. Unknown to Staples is that his wife, Nancy (Beatrice Straight), is not above compromising. Nancy Staples enjoys the prosperity and status of being the wife of a rising executive and is willing to work with the ruthless Ramsey to keep them.

The power to PATTERNS is Ramsey's fierce determination to edge out Briggs with Staples. It doesn't matter how obvious Staples makes it known he despises Ramsey and his worldview, even to the point of Staples giving him a warning and a threat that if he ever was to give in and take over from Briggs that his sole determination would be to thereafter edge him out, taking it all. Ramsey commends Staples hatred, for him such threats and desires confirm why he needs Staples for the company. Ramsey is a disciple for competitiveness unbound and will foster its spread and development even if he is to be one of its victims. Here we see what he truly depises in Briggs is the love he has for friends and family. Briggs' loyalty and duty to the memory of Ramsey's father and founder of this company stands for everything Ramsey finds maudlin and weak. For Ramsey, corrupting Staples is the same as corrupting his late father's cherished business ethics and firing Briggs is a symbol of replacing his father's world with his own.

This Roan Group edition features an interesting and informative introduction from New York Post film critic Lou Lumenick.

4 out of 5 stars 5 star film, 3 star reproduction, so I give it 4 star status.......2005-09-24

First saw 'Patterns' on one of the movie channels. I didn't know that Searling was involved at the time, though it came as no surprise. Others have given the storyline, so I'll not go there. But the Roan dvd needs to be discussed. All the extras are a waste of time. The 1960'd psychidelic presentation has little in common with the seriousness and social statement of 'Patterns." The quality of the film is a little better than fair (I'm spoiled by the stunning transfers of other films, so I'm being a bit hard on this transfer)but with that being said, if this is all that is available, buy it if you're a Searling fan or want this film on dvd format. I would compare this to '12 Angry Men' in its intensity and insight into human nature the the human condition. It goes over the edge (actingwise) at times, but that's a minor mention. 'Patterns' is one of the great classics of America's film heritage. If you like 'Twilight Zone' you will be happy with this purchase.

Cooley High has frequently been compared to American Graffiti, and for good reason. Like that classic, Cooley High has a loose, multicharacter structure, autobiographical origins, and the rich texture of its time. Set in Chicago in 1964, the movie follows aspiring writer Preach (Glynn Turman) and local basketball star Cochise (Lawrence-Hilton Jacobs, who went on to star in Welcome Back, Kotter) as they wander their neighborhood, drifting in and out of their classes at Cooley Vocational High School. The two friends pull pranks, crash parties, commit petty crimes, and generally try to enjoy their lives in an impoverished urban environment. Preach falls in love with a smart girl named Brenda (Cynthia Davis), whom he wins over by reciting poetry--leading to one of the silliest and sweetest love scenes you'll ever see. When Preach and Cochise go on a joy ride with a pair of young hoods, they end up arrested. Their history teacher, Mr. Mason (a superb Garrett Morris), gets them off, but the hoods think the boys sold them out and come seeking revenge. Cooley High depicts the rough life of African Americans in the 1960s with honesty and humor, offering no easy solutions or pat lessons. It's a roughly made movie, but Turman and Jacobs are both excellent, and there's an attention to reality that makes it engaging, refreshing, and ultimately moving. The soundtrack is a great compilation of 1960s soul, including the Supremes, Martha and the Vandellas, Stevie Wonder, the Four Tops, and Smokey Robinson. An unjustly neglected film that deserves rediscovery. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars African American cinema at it's finest.......2007-07-13

This film is by far one of the best African Americaan films of all time. This film is funny, and it also has it's sad moments. Lawrence Hilton Jacobs is so fine, and I love Glynn Turman's character. I recommend this film to all film lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Chicago's Finest.......2007-06-20

This is truly one of the great ones. Cooley High is about teens (classmates)coming of age on the north side of Chicago, and how easily things can go wrong in a young person's life. Cooley High School is still standing today, but it was renamed "Lincoln Park High School" (For you Chicago people). The characters in the movie are very colorful and the story is true to life for growing up in Chicago during the 60's. The music is without a doubt one of the best soundtracks of the 60's era. The television series "What's Happening" was based on this movie.

5 out of 5 stars A great high school film full of soul!!!.......2006-11-25

Cooley High is one of the greatest high school films in movie history. People who have seen this movie would consider it a "black American Graffitti". That may be true, but this film's running time is shorter than American Graffitti. The cast members are excellent, especially Cynthia Davis, who played Brenda. I first saw this movie on TV years ago when I was a child. Little did I know how much I would enjoy it and love it. I recorded it on VHS back when I was in high school on the TBS channel in 1995 (in edited form; a scene was left out, and the swearing was replaced by silence gaps), but recorded it two years later on its own tape from the Encore channel in 1997 (the theatrical release). Great to see. On the DVD, the picture quality and audio quality are great, even though the sound is in mono and not in stereo (I don't mind mono sound; it's not bad). However, it's in fullscreen instead of widescreen (which is a bummer). There are no extras on this DVD, which is also kind of a letdown for fans of this movie. There's no theatrical trailer, no audio commentary, no "behind-the-scenes" documentary, or interviews with the cast and crew from the film. All you get in the DVD is the movie in fullscreen, a 4 page trivia booklet (which is 2 pages--how odd), and scene selection. But, that does not mean that this movie is not worth buying and watching. In my opinion, this DVD will do just fine, until, hopefully, the manufacturers re-release the movie in widescreen, and add the extras that are lacking from this current issue. You should also get the soundtrack album on CD as well. That is one of the best things about this movie--it has a lot of popular Motown songs in it. Get this movie and the soundtrack CD; you won't be disappointed.

It's been branded with the "blaxploitation" label, but there is little that's exploitive in J.D.'s Revenge, a film of well-drawn, articulate characters dragged into a supernatural showdown. Glynn Turman (Cooley High) is especially fine as the sensitive and quiet Ike, a determined student moonlighting as a cab driver, so wound up he's on the verge of cracking. Enter (literally) the ghost of J.D., a violent, vengeful gangster murdered in the opening moments. He could be Ike's own Mr. Hyde, a dapper, flamboyant ladykiller with a fiery temper and a straight razor who slowly smothers Ike's easygoing personality. Driven by flashes of memory, he sets his vengeful sights on fire-and-brimstone preacher Reverend Bliss (Louis Gossett Jr.), whose dark past is intricately tied up with J.D.'s murder. Director Arthur Marks (Detroit 9000) sidesteps the usual spooky clichés to stir up a modern New Orleans gumbo of ghost story, gangster tale, and character drama. J.D. is both devilish sadist and avenging angel, while the tortured Ike awakens from J.D.'s violent rampages with a hole in his memory but a sick feeling from his imagined complicity in the crimes. The story gets wrapped up a little too neatly in the end, but the dark character shadings and the evocative mystery at the center of Ike's possession makes J.D.'s Revenge an unexpectedly compelling supernatural thriller. --Sean Axmaker

4 out of 5 stars Endless Repetition..........2003-11-29

I first saw this in the late 70's while on a USN ship in the Med. It was a good distraction - and absolutely hilarious! In those days, the crews would exchange movies while underway via a large canvas bag. We'd send our "viewed" movies to another ship in exchange for the movies they'd seen.
EVERY EXCHANGE we'd end up with a copy of J.D.'s Revenge and Revenge of the B Girls. J.D.'s Revenge was so funny that the crew and wardroom watched it nearly every night for nearly 6 months. In a few months, nearly everyone had memorized the entire movie. It was like J.D. was taking over the crew...
Yup. Life was much harsher in the "Old Navy". How could anyone NOT want such an enjoyable (and quotable) movie?

4 out of 5 stars Interesting..........2002-08-12

This movie came out when I was about nine years old. Just out of the blue, the title popped into my head and I decided to purchase it....

The movie literaly had me on the edge of my seat once JD's spirit took over Ike's body. I disliked how this possession affected those close to Ike. He couldn't remember hurting his girlfriend or one of his customers. JD was CRAZY!!! It really did not take me long to figure out who killed JD and his sister, but I don't want to give it away. If your into "blaxplotation" movies, check this one out...

4 out of 5 stars Odd ending to a great film.......2007-03-23

One of the most odd type of endings to a vampire. However, this film, like "Blacula", is right up there as well. If you get "Blacula", get this movie along with it. Marshall plays a great vampire and Pam Grier plays a very good part in it as well..highly recommended !

5 out of 5 stars Blacula II.......2007-01-04

The sequel to "Blacula" was as good as I expected and then some. If you liked the orginal film I'm sure you'll like this one as well. William Marshall's portrayal of the ultra sophisticated, articulate, cultured "Playa/Pimp/Vampire" was without peer. Pam Grier was a vision of loveliness as were most of the actors in the technicolor blaxplotation gem. A visual delight. A young Lynn Moody was stunning in her role as the tough sixties "Soul-Sistah" with an attitude. Don Mitchell got a chance to show that he could be far more animated than he was on Ironsides and was almost believable in his portrayal of the leading man type. Far more funny than in any way scary so you ladies should enjoy it as well. Get with your man by the fireside and enjoy this jaunt into Black-Horror- Comedy. ****Cult-Classic****

5 out of 5 stars An impressive sequel to the classic blaxploitation original.......2005-07-13

In my opinion, Scream, Blacula, Scream is every bit as good as Blacula. Rather than offering a pedestrian rehash of the whole vampirism story of the original, the sequel throws another powerful force, that of voodoo, into the mix and gives the film a whole new direction. William Marshall is just as good as before in the title role, and he meets up with a worthy possible antagonist in Pam Grier, who plays the gifted voodoo priestess he seeks out for help. Blacula, resurrected in his undead state with no further possibility of reclaiming the modern incarnation of his beloved bride, now seeks to break the curse that has made him a bloodthirsty, yet exceedingly cool, pariah on society. That doesn't mean he's not going to keep killing people and turning them into vampires in the meantime, however, so expect more jugular action as this film winds its way to a conclusion.

If you've seen the first film, you know Blacula just didn't wake up and return to his vampire ways. It had to take something extraordinary to put that bag of bones back together - something like, say, a voodoo ritual. The local voodoo cult just so happens to be divided after the leader dies without naming a successor. The dead high priestess' son Willis (Richard Lawson) claims the top position, but everyone else defers to Lisa (Pam Grier). Willis wants revenge, and he finds what he thinks is the perfect instrument in the form of the resurrected Blacula. Of course, nobody tells Blacula what to do, and Willis is immediately made the first of the vampire's new minions (and he is far from happy when he learns he can no longer admire his good looks and unique fashion sense in the mirror). A number of vampiric murders ensue, drawing the critical eye of the local police, but Blacula sets his sights on Lisa once he realizes that her voodoo gifts may hold the power to free him of his horrible curse. Her boyfriend Justin (Don Mitchell), a former cop, is the first to put all the clues together, and all parties collide in the film's concluding scenes. Will Blacula be freed of his dreadful curse?

Scream, Blacula, Scream lacks some of the humor of the first film, and it doesn't really try as hard to scare the audience, either. Even still, I enjoyed this film as much as I did the original. It's really an impressive sequel, coming only a year after Blacula singlehandedly brought the blaxploitation horror subgenre to life. Pam Grier fans will be disappointed if they expect to see the bad action star of Foxy Brown and other films, but the character of Blacula should satisfy most of your butt-kicking needs. Personally, I think the filmmakers should have gone with the alternate title Blacula is Beautiful, but this is still a must-have blaxploitation horror film that looks and sounds better than ever thanks to modern technology.
