A classic 1967 Disney animated film that's loosely based on Rudyard Kipling's book of the same name, Jungle Book tells the story of a young boy Mowgli who was raised by animals in the jungle. When tiger Shere Khan threatens to return to their part of the jungle, the other animals decide that Mowgli must return to the man village in order to ensure his safety. Panther Bagheera has difficulty convincing Mowgli to follow him to the man village and recruits the help of a big lovable bear Baloo. Mowgli's journey is one of wit, song, and many surprises. A timeless film populated by strong characters bursting with personality, great music like "Bare Necessities" and "I Wanna Be Like You," and inspiring animation by Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston, and other master animators, Jungle Book captivates audiences of all ages.

This Platinum Edition includes everything from the standard bonus features like interactive games, music videos, and deleted songs to exciting and sometimes rare commentaries by everyone from modern day animators to Walt Disney himself, multiple featurettes about specific aspects of the film and its production, and a lengthy deleted scene featuring lost character Rocky the Rhino. Especially interesting for adults and Disney fans are "The Bare Necessities: The making of The Jungle Book" featurette, which explores Walt Disney's commitment to developing strong characters and his insistence that writers, animators, and song writers create a light version of Jungle Book that followed his own personal interpretation of the story, and the "The Lure of The Jungle Book" featurette, which discusses Frank Thomas' and Ollie Johnston's amazing contribution to the film as prolific animators and the inspiration and influence that their work provided for future animators including Brad Bird (The Incredibles), Andreas Deja (Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King), Sergio Pablos (Tarzan), Will Finn (Home on the Range), and Eric Goldberg (Fantasia 2000). The full length commentary by Bruce Reitherman (voice of Mowgli), animator Andreas Deja, and composer Richard Sherman with its interspersed archival commentary of Disney greats from the original creative team (Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston, Woolie Reitherman, and others) is also very interesting and insightful. --Tami Horiuchi

Description

One of the most popular Disney films ever, THE JUNGLE BOOK is a song-filled celebration of friendship, fun, and adventure set in a lush and colorful world. Inspired by Rudyard Kipling's "Mowgli" stories, Disney's 19th animated masterpiece was the last animated feature that had Walt Disney's personal touch. The jubilant adventure begins when Mowgli, a little boy raised by wolves, is urged by his friend Bagheera, a wise old panther, to seek safety in the man village. Feeling very much at home in the jungle, Mowgli resists and runs off. Much to Bagheera's dismay, Mowgli meets a new friend with a happy-go-lucky philosophy of life -- Baloo the Bear, a lovable "jungle bum." Together, the three buddies find the journey back to civilization anything but civilized! They encounter a crazy orangutan, the hypnotic and sly snake Kaa, and the menacing Shere Khan! Fully restored for this 30th anniversary edition, this enduring classic swings with jazzy toe-tapping music, including the Academy Award(R)-nominated "The Bare Necessities," and the freewheeling "I Wan'na Be Like You"! A thrilling story for all ages, THE JUNGLE BOOK is an absolute necessity for your video collection.

5 out of 5 stars A review for parents.......2007-07-17

With so many Disney DVDs to choose from, is "The Jungle Book," even a new "Platinum" version, really a must buy?

Absolutely. Just 64 minutes long, this unpretentious adventure is full of imaginative characters, charming song and dance routines, interesting themes and innocent good humor. Unlike many Disney films, "The Jungle Book" doesn't strive to be high art and has no groundbreaking special effects, but it's still one of the company's best animated films. And now the film has now been "digitally enhanced," with a brighter contrast and cleaner colors. I've seen some clips from this new release, and they really look good.

Telling the tale of Mowgli, a human boy brought up in the jungles of India, the movie is a freewheeling adaptation of some Victorian-era short stories by British writer Rudyard Kipling. Rescued as an infant by a protective panther named Bagheera, the boy is raised by wolves and adopted by a carefree bachelor bear, Baloo. Disney punches up the stories with Western jokes and music (the pop soundtrack includes Baloo's and orangutan King Louie's infectious scat duet "I Wanna Be Like You" and Baloo's perky prickly pear primer, "The Bear Necessities"), but wisely eliminates Kipling's patronizing overtones.

"The Jungle Book" teaches children a number of good life lessons. It demonstrates that the world includes enemies as well as friends, and that enemies sometimes disguise themselves as friends. It argues that though its fun to pretend you're someone you're not, it's best to accept the person you are. Finally, the film teaches young viewers two lessons about love. First, as Baloo learns when he realizes he must finally return Mowgli to the "man village," that true love is unselfish. And second, as Mowgli learns in the final scene, that the ultimate male fulfillment is romantic love -- or, as some cynics view the segment, the pursuit of a cute, wide-eyed flirt.

Parents can take note of a classic Disney touch: the acceptance of both religion and science. The film begins with the infant Mowgli lying in a basket along a riverbank, a reference to Moses that's not in the Kipling stories. Later, however, there's a nod to Darwin, as the orangutan King Louie greets the human boy with an outstretched hand, saying "Shake hands, cousin."

If nothing else, adults can enjoy identifying the distinctive character voices (Kaa is voiced by Sterling Holloway, already known as the "Alice in Wonderland" Cheshire Cat and soon to be famous as Winnie the Pooh), laughing at the chorus of Beatle-like vultures (one looks just like Ringo), or wonder just what a large, furry bear is doing in a tropical jungle in the first place.

If you're a fan of the story you may also want to check out Disney's live-action (and non-musical) version, 1994's Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book. Though it's a little violent for younger kids (one soldier is sucked under a pond of quicksand and dies a slow death), this PG film is not really scary and quite the exotic adventure. Its stars include Sam Neill and, in a bit part, John Cleese.

It cant get any better than this. Disney beloved animated classic "The Jungle Book" finally gets the long overdue Platinum treatment. This new 40th Anniversary release will include an all-new digital restoration of the film and for the very first time ever, this release will feature the movie in 1.75:1 widescreen aspect ratio (Please be aware that "Jungle Book" was filmed in 1.37:1 aspect ratio and was cropped for its theatrical screenings. The movie loses a little from top and bottom here in this restored version so think twice before selling off your old copies which featured the movie in its original fullscreen ratio). Along with a 5.1 Disney Enhanced Home Theater Mix soundtrack, this edition includes a restored original theatrical soundtrack too. French and Spanish language tracks will also appear on the disc. According to dvdtimes, extras on this platinum edition will include:

Audio Commentary - Combines comments from current animators with audio from the original creative team who made the film

The Lost Character: Rocky The Rhino - For the first time ever, the near-sighted, short-tempered rhinoceros named Rocky is brought to the screen using original storyboards and original voice recordings by Frank Fontaine.

Disney's Kipling: Walt's Magic Touch on A Literary Classic - A discarded film treatment from 1963 includes scenes from Kipling's "Mowgli Stories" and more are used to illustrate Walt's interpretation of the literary masterpiece

The Lure of The Jungle Book - Many of today's biggest names in animation were inspired to pursue their careers after seeing The Jungle Book; this feature examines this phenomenon and features new interviews with Brad Bird, Andreas Deja, Sergio Pablo, Will Finn and Eric Goldberg.

Mowgli's Return to the Jungle - Learn about nature filmmaking and the experience of making The Jungle Book firsthand from Bruce Reitherman, the voice of Mowgli.

Disney's 1967 animated feature seems even more entertaining now than it did upon first release, with a hall-of-fame vocal performance by Phil Harris as Baloo, the genial bear friend of feral child Mowgli. Based on fiction by Rudyard Kipling, the film goes its own way as Disney animation will, but the strong characters and smart casting (George Sanders as the villainous tiger, Shere Khan) make it one of the studio's stronger feature-length cartoons. Songs include "The Bare Necessities" and "Trust in Me." --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Cute Characters, Great Songs and Sweet Story Make this a Disney Classic .......2007-02-04

Though it diverges wildly from the the original story by Rudyard Kipling Disney's THE JUNGLE BOOK is one of the mouse's best classic animated musical movies. The voice actors are excellent and the songs are clever, memorable and move the story forward. There is enough action and humor for adults to enjoy the movie and though there are villains they are not too scary for the little ones. All ends happily though bittersweetly.

5 out of 5 stars Still love this movie..........2007-01-12

My Daddy took me to see this movie when I was a small child. This movie has been a lasting and happy memory of my childhood, so I was thrilled when my grandson fell in love with it also. I had a VHS version of the movie and when it was destroyed I panicked because Disney had already stopped production of it. After checking EVERYWHERE I finally located the movie with Amazon.com as my middleman. I ordered the CD version, which was not cheap, but I got it at the best price through Amazon.
My grandson is singing with the movie again and happy. This movie is timeless and well worth the price paid.

Sophisticated to a point, this well-executed wolf-man tale works due to its clever setting and enormous star power. We all know Jack Nicholson can go nuts, but the script makes his character aware of his changes, sometimes for the better, early on. The setting, a publishing house in the middle of a takeover, gives the characters dramatic life before the horror elements kicks in. A senior editor about to get the boot, Nicholson's character becomes a new man after being bitten by a wolf. He takes on challenges at work, lives a more robust life, and attracts a new love. But will his newfound energy consume him? Director Mike Nichols keeps the action alive in the first half, but the film peters out at the end with cheap theatrics and the overuse of slow motion. Michelle Pfeiffer has little to do as simply the love interest with a grittier than average personality. Better is James Spader as a smarmy colleague. Nicholson is in fine form, relying on his keen gift to spark interest (a twitch of the head, a look in the eyes), instead of heavy doses of movie makeup. Giuseppe Rotunno's sweeping camerawork sets the mood quite well. Easy to recommend, with the added feature it's hardly gratuitous. --Doug Thomas

4 out of 5 stars 4 stars for movie, +4 stars for Michelle pretty, -4 stars for DVD packing.......2007-08-20

Movie is not bad, especially the last scenes of Michelle "transforming".

However, DVD quality is terrible unacceptable!! 2 sides DVD, widescreen and fullscreen. I wonder why cannot put together on one side. The most terrible is menu.....blue screen background, very small movie poster on side and other bottom as play....setup...scene selections etc...no english subtitle.

This is the worst DVD packing that i ever met.

3 out of 5 stars Lacks Bite........2007-06-11

This movie could have been a contender. From the pitch perfect casting of Jack Nicholson in the title role of the wolfman to the superb and moody cinematography of Giuseppe Rotunno, this glossy and well mounted old style Hollywood production should have delivered in spades. And, thats the problem - it should have.

The story is a canny one. Nicholson stars as Wil Randall, a worn down book publisher working in the cut-throat industry of corporate publishing. His smug boss Christopher Plummer is ready to ship him off to a middle european assignment that nobody wants and he is constantly hounded by a younger co-worker (hammed up to-the-hilt by James Spader) for his job. Oh yeah, his wife is also cheating on him behind his back. Its all downhill for Randall, who is the wrong side of 40, tired and pschologically ready for the scrap heap. His downtrodden persona is perfectly presented by Nicholson, as from the opening sequences, we are totally aware of the nauseating corporate politics that revolve around him on a daily basis, and its at this point where the movie soars. The backstabbing, the corporate shenanigans and the general day-to-day grind that every working stiff has to endure - its all here. Only for Nicholson, he's got another problem: He's been attacked by a wolf. I know. Bear with me.

The wolf attack is slight and only used to open up the picture - almost matter of fact. From this point on, Nicholson begins to display heightened senses, acute hearing, enhanced smell and incredible agility - all the hallmarks of a man 20 years younger than his advancing years. This new found lust for life gives Jack not only a boost, but the movie kicks up a gear too (and reminds me of Jeff Goldblum coming to terms with his transformation in "The Fly"), becoming smart, funny and fast moving. However, as the wolfman's curse begins to take hold on Jack, so does the scriptwriters' inabilty to keep this hokey concept afloat.

The problems arise when Michele Pfieffer turns up. Her character is an obviously redemptive foil for Jack, and after her initial "hard faced chick" routine, she spends the rest of the picture running from wolfmen or screaming at various attacks, etc. Its as if the screenwriter did have an initial idea of what he wanted to do with her character - making her strong, forceful, quick witted and three dimensional. However, during the course of the film, she is lost amidst a hodge-podge of juevenile wolf attacks and overt "skirt and high heels" moments. Most of these with occur with James Spader. Who seems to think he is in a children's pantomime and not a summer event movie - his over-the-top werewolf act makes Nicholson seem positively subdued in comparison, and he almost blows the good work that has been done before in the proceeding hour.

The fault could lie at many feet. Director Mike Nichols isn't exactly known for genre movies, and this movie does works best as a character builder (ie, the first half) and at this point, the film excels. However, he seems unsure as to how far to go with the horror aspect, and ultimately satisfies neither the genre savvy summer audience or the mature cinema goer (which this film so desperately wants to be in with) - the movie starts out as a steak, but ultimately leaves as a burger. Jim Harrison and Wesley Stricks' script starts out smart, sassy and funny but quickly descends into farce and mediocrity. Which is a shame as the production is well mounted, with an excellent autumn hued look. The score is great, too - obviously, created to give a grand, 1930s universal horror feel and Nicholson is superb in the lead role. Even though Pfeiffer and Spader aren't as effective in their respective roles, I fear that is more to do with a lacklustre script than their talents (as both are excellent in their own right. Spader is great in "Sex, Lies & Videotape", "Secretary" and "Crash"). All in all, a decent attempt that seems to have been held back by a large studio budget, unsure direction and an identity crisis as to who it wishes to speak to. Like most movies of today, it wants its have its cake and eat it by appealing to all demographics, but unlike something like "An American Werewolf in London" which mixes its blend of horror, comedy, romance and drama into a headier brew, "Wolf" only manages to produce a movie that is `nearly there'.

DVD presentation is sharp, with no extras. Only a trailer. The movie is recommended, but don't expect a wild ride. Just an easy-going and minor entry in the werewolf subgenre.

5 out of 5 stars Jack the big bad wolf has deffently marked his territory in Hollywood!.......2007-06-05

This movie is awesome, it's like a roller Coster ride from start to finish. I really liked how he looked as the new wolfman for a new up to date version. James Spader goes through some changes as well? That's the best part, I am not going to give away. This movie takes the whole werewolf legend to a new level. It also gives you a good reference to how we as individuals have to deal with in everyday life situations, dealing with work and relationships in our personal lives, and how some people can be very diseveing and somethings you thought you knew them but you were wrong, and when things were going right until an unexcpected change in your life changes everything. That's what Nicholson's character as a well mannered book editor named Will Randle. He has a good head on his shoulders untill after driving home one night from a business trip changes his whole life forever. That's all I am going to tell you for now. The rest is for you to watch for yourselves. This is a good thinking movie as well as a pychologic thriller. It's a good werewolf movie without so much blood but has a well deserved written story line. It's got it twist and turns. Trust me this movie is worth seeing over and over. Then you will be howling all night...

4 out of 5 stars JACK MAKES WOLF GREAT WHEN IT WOULD HAVE BEEN AN OTHERWISE ABYSMALLY AVERAGE MOVIE INTO.......2007-04-16

Wolf has a movie of the week quality to it. The characters are very one demensional and to say Jack's immense talents were woefully under used in WOLF is the kind of understatment to boggle the minds of sick and sane alike. That said Wolf is an enjoyable movie, with way too little werewolf action for my heart. The werewolf scenes were all too breif. The lighting was so bad in Wolf because, better lighting would have revealed the dime store special effects and prostetics used in the filming.

Jack makes this movie work because, he is convincing as a lycanthrope. There is something that creeps you out about Jack being a werewolf that he invests in the character just enough to make you buy in to the paper thin plot of WOLF! I won't lie. I enjoyed WOLF immensely which is why I gave it 4 stars. I know many of my Lycanthope loving purest's pan the movie for being so average and in some ways sub-par and I hear you brothers and sisters but. I have seen some far worse werewolf movies than this one. Wolves of Wall Streel leaps right to mind for one of the worst werewolf films.

WOLF is not bad. WOLF was so refreshing because it protrayed a werewolf as a force of good for once and that earned it four stars from my amazon.com den. Wolf keeps the Werewolf genre' alive and does so with more class than most these days. I added WOLF to my growing werewolf collection a long time ago and never regretted it for a moment.

After a delightful opening, in which jungle boy Mowgli (voiced by Haley Joel Osment) recaps much of the original Jungle Book in a sprightly shadow puppet show, The Jungle Book 2 swiftly turns into a carbon copy of the splendidly swinging previous movie. After his old pal Baloo the bear (voiced by John Goodman) draws Mowgli away from the man-village, with all its work and rules, and back into the glorious indolence of the jungle, the movie repeats--in a less energetic form--an encounter with Kaa the snake, the cockney vultures, a musical number at the monkey's palace, the menace of Shere Khan the tiger, and even the song "The Bare Necessities." The only difference is that there's a girl named Shanti along for the ride; sadly, her character is so bland that it doesn't do much to justify the movie's existence. --Bret Fetzer

Description

From Disney's wildly popular THE JUNGLE BOOK comes a thrilling, all-new animated feature film. The jungle is jumping again as Mowgli, Baloo, Bagheera, and the rest of your favorite characters return in the fun-filled musical adventure THE JUNGLE BOOK 2. "It's a work of such charm and imagination it should enchant children of all ages" (Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times). Mowgli (Haley Joel Osment) has been living in the village among the humans. His new life includes his little stepbrother, Ranjan, and his best friend, Shanti, but the man-cub still has that jungle rhythm in his heart, and he misses his old buddy Baloo (John Goodman). When Mowgli wanders back into the wild for some swingin' fun, he soon finds Baloo isn't the only one waiting for him -- the man-eating tiger Shere Khan is lurking in the shadows and planning his revenge. If he is to defeat his nemesis, Mowgli will need the help of both his old friends and his new family. With fresh new renditions of "Bare Necessities" and "I Wanna Be Like You," and a host of original toe-tappin' tunes paired with classic Disney animation, THE JUNGLE BOOK 2 is sure to delight the entire family.

5 out of 5 stars Jungle Book 2 DVD.......2007-04-03

Purchased for a 2 year old girl who loves Jungle Book. She loves 2 as much as the first one. One is on VHS, this one on DVD so she goes back & forth between the tv & portable dvd player frequently.

1 out of 5 stars Jungle Book 2 Did not Have To Be made Limited Issue Is 100 Times Better.......2006-09-18

Disney keeps goming out with sequels to the best DVD's ever made. The Jungle Book Limited Issue Is the best movie ever made.My Grandson watches it all the time. Its made for the child also the adult like me. I bought Jungle Book 2 totally dissapointed in the dvd. I did not like it at all I returned it.Its a horible movie for children: Disney stop ruining our excellent dvds.I give this dvd A -1

1 out of 5 stars Movies like this make you ask, WAS THIS SEQUEL REALLY NECCESSARY.......2006-04-01

The original Jungle Book was inventive, whitty, uplifting and charming. The characters had depth and a beauty that in its time was unique and wonderful. The original Disney Jungle Book story was told with great feeling that was a source of fun and inspiration to me growing up as an autistic child. I can honestly say the original Disney Jungle Book movie was the only movie I loved that also touched my heart.

Jungle Book 2 is is just a very badly executed attempt at recreating the awesomeness of the The original Disney Jungle Book. Jungle Book 2 fails in all attempts to recreate any of the magic of the original Disney Jungle Book. Jungle Book 2 is endlessly bland overall filled with nothing at all to justify wasting a moment of your life watching. You will be better and more deeply entertained for hours watching newly poured cement dry compared to watching a moment of Jungle Book 2. Don't Waste your time wacthing this garbage it is not worth anyones time or money. It gets one star only because the amazon system does not allow me to post zero stars or better still stars in negative numbers.

5 out of 5 stars Execellent Jungle Movie.......2006-01-26

I watched Jungle Book 2 movie at the behest of my two young daughters aged 5 and 9. What a thrill. I enjoyed the excellent sound tracks particularly "Jungle Rhythm". The special effects were excellent and the dancing by all creatures great and small was rhythmic and great to watch.

The kids love the movie and they watch it often. This is good entertainment for the kids (and the young at heart)that I recommend to any parent.

Directors Chris Hegedus (The War Room) and Jehane Noujaim couldn't have imagined the drama that awaited when they began documenting the creation of the pioneering e-commerce site govWorks.com. For over a year they followed the company, the brainchild of childhood-friends-turned-business-partners software geek and doting single dad Tom Herman, and ambitious young business-school-grad-turned-company-CEO Kaleil Isaza Tuzman. During the rise of the Internet investment frenzy and the subsequent crash of the dot-economy, the cameras remain keyed into the human dynamic: the lifestyle compromises, the personal sacrifices, and the clash of philosophies and personalities that ultimately tear boyhood buddies Tom and Kaleil apart...almost. Startup.com's portrait of the cutthroat nature of American business culture and the choices one makes (or doesn't) to succeed poses the one question most documentaries ignore: Is it worth it? --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars Startup.com.......2007-07-25

Anyone with the faintest un-suppressed memory of the Internet boom should watch the cautionary "Startup.com," an intense look at the treacherous waters of American business start-ups. Chris Hegedus ("The War Room") and Jehane Noujaim ("Control Room") were lucky enough to capture the full dramatic arc of Tuzman and Herman's venture, from the height of the Internet frenzy to the dot-com bubble's big burst. "Start-up" demonstrates how the rules of cut-throat modern entrepreneurship can transform positive human ambition into nerve-shredding obsession.

4 out of 5 stars What price are we willing to pay for .......2007-04-10

As I write this review,I am two days removed from hearing of the tragic and senseless suicide of an acquaintance who had it all, risked it all, lost his family, fell into depression and substance abuse and hung himself.Why?.....his life WAS his startup and it came crashing down around him and he couldn't bear it.
STARTUP.COM is a timeless look at the rise and fall of businesses and the people who rise and fall with them. Some people who will view this film will only want to know one thing:How do I succeed in building a business and make money? Others will view this film and learn about the trmendous sacrifices to self and interpersonal relationships that comes from examining the failures of others driven by an intense desire or need to "succeed".This documentary examines both aspects of business-the technical and the personal. The two aspects are always competing. The lives of the "twentysomething"founders of gov.WORKS.com are examined in intimate detail as Kaleil and Tom are followed from the infancy stage of their internet organization, through it's quick rise to fame,(they were on every major mag cover and even had audience with President Clinton!!!)and it's crashing in 20 months.Loyalties and passions are questioned. This is a very realistic look at the down -and -dirty business world as portrayed in the .com rush of a few years back. What this film has to teach us is about the price that one pays in blood for what one thinks is necessary for "success".This film is a sobering look for anyone, any age who needs to possibly reexamine their priorities in business and in life.

5 out of 5 stars Great, observational documentary.......2006-10-07

One of my favorite documentaries, "Startup.com" follows two high school friends as they create an internet business together.

Besides catching history on film, the filmmakers document what happens when friendship enters the business realm.

3 out of 5 stars Anthropological Record of the Decline and Fall of the West.......2006-02-01

This will be as valuable to future anthroplogists after this civilisation has gone the way of all self-indulgent greed-obsessed cultures, as the murals of Pompeii's preening elite. The two main characters are equally obnoxious and equaly revealing of all that's wrong with this culture of money and ignorant selfishness. All the 'extras' floating around in the background who get churned in the delusional business fantasies of these two idiots are far more interesting, but we dont get to hear much about them. Enron wasnt a fluke, judging by this film.

1 out of 5 stars don't even bother!.......2005-10-21

Okay, I was excited to see this movie. I read a few non fiction books on the dot.com bust and thought I knew a thing or two, but when I watched this movie focus on petty relationships and nothing more, I found myself wondering what planet these film makers were from. I mean, WHO cares about these people's relationships?? NOT ANYONE WHO IS WATCHING THIS MOVIE! We care about why and how businesses succeed and fail. This movie sucked!

Description

Professor Davidson and his lovely daughter Diana search Africa for the Lost City of Zoloz. Legend pegs it to be the source of a vast hidden treasure. Their search is hindered by a local crook, Singapore Smith, who wants the treasure for himself. It is further complicated by Dr. Bremmer, an international criminal, who plans to destroy the peace with the local native tribes and build a secret air base at Zoloz. Fortunately, the Phantom, who is also Diana's fiancé, is more than a match for the two villains. The Phantom, with his superhuman strength, manages to outwit each enemy move, escaping from one death trap after an other: avalanches, poison gas, flaming pyres, and explosions fail to shake his fearless spirit. With the help of his four-footed pal Devil, he finally overpowers all the enemy factions, and brings peace to the jungle once again. 5 out of 5 stars Top-notch serial.......2007-08-17

I'd read that the director of the Captain Marvel serial thought Tom Tyler was a terrible actor (which is why he said a total of about 12 words the whole time), but this proves him wrong. He's a very good phantom and this is a good ride.

There are offensive stereotypes, so get ready for the occasional cringe and this is not the Royal Academy in terms of acting or writing, but if you shut down your critical brain for a while, you'll probably find yourself drawn in--a little like quicksand.

5 out of 5 stars Five Star Phantom.......2007-02-18

I'm a big Phantom fan so I may be biased but I thought this was great stuff. This took me back to my childhood. I saw the serial when I was a kid in the fifties and it's still great over 50 years later. They could have made his costume a bit better but apart from that a great adventure. My teenage kids loved this too, which is saying something.

5 out of 5 stars Bringing back childhood memories.......2007-01-04

Really enjoyed this serial. I'm 56, and can still remember going to the Pitt theatre on saturday mornings to catch the serials. Watching the Phantom brings back a time before America lost it's commom sense and the phrase "politically correct" wasn't heard of.

4 out of 5 stars the phantom.......2006-11-07

MOVIE WAS MADE FROM A GOOD COPY.PICTURE WAS VERY CLEAR AND CLEAN.THE STORY FOLLOWS THE ORIGINAL PREMISE VERY CLOSELY.ALL IN ALL IT'S A FUN SERIAL TO WATCH.

3 out of 5 stars Fast-paced and watchable.......2006-08-08

I grew up reading Phantom cartoons. This video series shows a different Phantom. First, there is no horse named Hero. Phantom of this video is not as strong as in the cartoon. However, these are not major issues for me.

I had a huge problem with the Professor. He does not care about his fellow men, only interested in his pursuit of the Zoloz ruins. I was truly disgusted to hear him say that the wealth of the Zoloz tribes belongs to his sponsor University! What nonsense! Even Phantom was no better. He realized that the jewels in his skull cave are the treasures of the Zoloz, but did not consider returning them to the tribes! In my dictionary, this is thievery.

Judy Holliday shines as an idealistic stockholder who uncovers corruption at the top rung of a major corporation in this lighthearted romantic comedy. 1957 Academy Award® Winner for Best Costume Design!

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Lovely screwball comedy that's even more relevant today.......2007-09-08

I've read the play and always wanted to see the movie, finally broke down and bought the DVD. It's well worth owning. Judy Holliday is excellent and--for the period--there's surprisingly little patronizing of the career woman. I had a bit of trouble swallowing the romance aspect but it was sweet nonetheless. Definitely a nice addition to an old movie collection.

5 out of 5 stars Judy Holliday is the BEST!.......2007-07-13

This is the somewhat dark comedy predecessor to "How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" in that both deal with corporate greed and bureaucracy with a satirical approach. Holliday is masterful, as always, in her portrayal of a somewhat naive stockholder who is given a position with the company to shut her up--she ends up saving the day for the employees and stockholders by performing an end-run around the officers. Certainly as entertaining, if not moreso, as her "Bells Are Ringing" with Dean Martin. I loved it!

    5 out of 5 stars TIMELESS GOLD.......2007-06-01

What can you say about Judy Holliday? Her timing was always absolutely perfect. Her facial expressions frequently making speech unnecessary. In Solid Gold Cadillac she gives a magical portrayal of a supposedly, dumb blonde, part time actress with no appreciation of Shakespeare, ("You don't even get to sit down unless you're a king" - a typical Holliday line) but who is nonetheless shrewd enough to see through the corrupt shenanigans of the board of directors of a multi-national company in which she owns ten shares. The partnering of Judy Holliday with that fine actor, Paul Douglas, as Edward L. McKeever, the upright, down to earth and totally INCORRUPTIBLE founder of the company, who is "scared of girls", works like a dream. The film also has excellent support from Ray Collins, Arthur O'Connell, Neva Patterson, John Williams and of course Fred Clark, as Snell, the oily, slippery, nasty piece of work company treasurer. I defy anyone not to hiss whenever he appears. In addition to being a lovely romantic comedy, this is also a tale of good fighting to overcome evil, and the little people of this world getting together and refusing to be trampled by a big faceless conglomerate. If you've never seen this picture before, or maybe never seen a Judy Holliday movie, you're in for a treat.

    5 out of 5 stars efficient enjoyment.......2007-04-05

I saw this film this week with a theater audience, who were completely engaged as a group with the plot points because of the charming performances. The comedic range of Judy Holliday in this film is astonishing, and she is giftwrapped for viewers' full appreciation by period fashions of 1956. There is an immediate smile as Holliday and Paul Douglas head for the lunch counter at Schrafts, Douglas is warned that a bridge toll will cost him twenty-five cents, and the steno pool uses the latest in Smith Corona typewriters. The entire cast works well together with material that was naughty on Broadway half a century ago during the Eisenhower years, wringing the naughtiness out for us with subtly knowing leers.

Of particular interest to me was watching Ray Collins shortly before he immortalized Lt. Tragg on the b&w PERRY MASON and a dozen years after he played the political foil to Welles's Kane. A member of the chorus of corrupt corporate execs, he has the fewest lines and least to contribute. Observe his workmanlike energy as he fits himself to a thankless part and retains professional dignity by doing exactly what it requires.

    5 out of 5 stars Great movie.......2005-04-18

I cannot stand Judy's voice, but I love this movie. It is entertaining and I have never seen another movie even remotely like it. I love it for its originality and ingenuity.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Liar Liar (HD DVD) Review by Justin Sluss.......2007-06-21

The Movie Itself tells the story of how one smooth talking, habitual liar of an attorney "Fletcher Reede" (played by Jim Carey) is forced by his son's birthday wish to have to tell the truth for the next 24 hours. From the second his son "Max" (played by Justin Cooper) blows out his birthday candles until that exact time the next day "Fletcher" (a shady lawyer) is in for 24 hours of telling "the whole truth and nothing but the truth."

This movie for it's time was a huge hit and allowed star Jim Carey to portray a character that looked normal (meaning not have to wear a wig, make-up, etc.) but still allowed him to be able to do his crazy spontaneous comedy type of acting at the same time. This film is not only hilarious and one that is sure to make you laugh but it's also kind of touching the story between the father, son. Obviously not as much so as just downright how funny Jim Carey is in this film. Even with all the other ratings considered this is still a film worth checking out if you have never seen it.

Video Quality on this release is 1080p VC-1 on a 15 gigabyte HD DVD disc. To be a film from 1997 and only on a HD-15 (15gb HD DVD) the video quality here looks really good I think over the original DVD. I for one owned the original `97 DVD release which was actually a 4:3 Fullscreen version, so for me this is almost like night and day but still it's nothing worthy of a 5 star rating. Honestly at times I have to say this is almost just as good as the video transfer for "Bruce Almighty", the other Jim Carey film released the same day on HD DVD. There is some obvious film grain in a few scenes that just hasn't been cleaned up. This translates into some very noticeable film noise in the video presentation from time to time. This is I guess to be expected from a 1997 release like this but I'd have to say the video transfer is an improvement overall and very watchable.

Audio Quality on this release is in Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 @ 1.5Mbps which is an improvement over the original DVD releases' Dolby Digital tracks but still nothing that amazing. It gets 3 stars for being an improvement over the original DVD and really that is why it gets this audio quality rating. The film is primarily dialog driven anyway so it really doesn't matter too much about an improvement in audio quality here. This film is mostly about Jim Carey's character and his hilarious dialog he dishes out once his son has makes the birthday wish. You're most likely going to be laughing so hard at some points I doubt you'll hear too much of the movie's sound over yourself.

Bonus Materials appear to be nothing more than the latest DVD release's ("Collector's Edition") bonus materials ported over and presented in 4:3 standard definition. Really disappointing as you'd expect but let's begin with what all you'll find here. First off there's audio Commentary by Director Tom Shadyac. "Bridging the Comedy Chasm" (16 minutes) starts off to appear to be nothing more than Jim Carey goofing off but soon we get interviews not only from him but also the producer, Director Tom Shadyac and other cast members like the young Justin Cooper. This proves to really showcase Jim obviously more than anybody but it still is worth watching and has some laughs. "Deleted Scene" (4 minutes) is just what you'd expect. Only one deleted scene here obviously but it's a good one if I say so myself. It shows "Fletcher Reede" in a court case (which would have been shown probably near or at the beginning of the film if it had not been deleted) defending this big neanderthal of a criminal against this little old man in a neck brace. It's "Fletcher" at his finest when he could lie. This scene honestly shouldn't have been deleted if you ask me. It's worth 4 minutes of pure laughter, I think anyway. Last we get a very horrible quality (for both video and sound) version of the original Theatrical Trailer to the film. These bonus materials are nothing short of really disappointing as I started this off saying. The only reason this got as high of a rating as it did for bonus materials is the fact Universal not only includes bookmarks now but the ability to make In and Out's to your favorite scenes. If it were not for that, this would have been rated probably 1 or 1 1/2 stars.
