Description

Take a Hard Ride.......2007-03-12

One of my favorite western movies. I have always liked Jim Brown's westerns. He was in great form in this one. Lee Van Clief was great as the bounty hunter. The surprise was Jim Kelly. Some of his best martial arts fight scenes are on this movie. This is the type on movie I can watch over and over again.

"Take a Hard Ride" barely transcends the routine. What distinguishes it from other films of it's ilk is the chemistry between Jim Brown's iconic trail boss and Fred Williamson's suave gambler. The two riff off each other like a smooth running machine. One could only imagine if their talent were better utilized by more skilled craftsmen like, say, Sergio Leone. A bonus is the presence of Leone veteran Lee Van Cleef who may be grayer but hasn't lost any of his steely eyed menace. The film disappoints, however, because it doesn't deliver on the promise of a satisfying showdown between Brown and Van Cleef's characters.

Fun & Exciting Western. A Tribute to the Genre........2005-12-17

This is the type of film they don't make anymore (sadly). A good, old-fashioned, western. Jim Brown's the stalwart, Fred Williamson's the charltan you don't know how he's going to turn, and Jim Kelly's the one who's tougher than both of them. To top it off, the old pro Lee Van Cleef is along for the ride, and he'd like to see all of them dead.

We also get to see seasoned vets Dana Andrews (albeit in a small, but pivotal, part), and Barry Sullivan. And Harry Carey, Jr., who's one of the most likable people in filmdom (I know. I've met him.) is memorable as a scuz.

To top it off, Jerry Goldsmith has one of his most memorable scores, and that's saying something. The music for TAKE A HARD RIDE is every bit as outstanding as Goldsmith's westerns such as 100 RIFLES, RIO CONCHOS, and BREAKHEART PASS.

A good actioneer, and a fun western.

Description

Uneasy Allies Track Down an Escaped Killer OSCAR(r) nominees Burt Reynolds (Boogie Nights) and Bruce Dern (Coming Home) star in a tense Western about the uneasy alliance between a convict and a Territorial Marshal. Billy Bucklin (David Figlioli) busts out en route to Yuma Prison, so Marshal Hutchinson (Dern) has his brother-in-law, John McKay (Reynolds), released to help bring him down. Hutch offers a possible pardon for the killing McKay claims was in self-defense, and also reveals that his deputy, John's son Joshua (Seth Peterson), is tracking the dangerous man. Elizabeth Kennedy (Amy Jo Johnson) is saved from Bucklin's henchmen after her family is massacred, and doggedly joins the three searchers as they try to get him-dead or alive.

Great actors in a made-for-TV mediocrity.......2005-08-13

First, I love Bruce Dern and Burt Reynolds. I could watch them just sit around and talk, and in fact those scenes are the best part of the movie. Hard Ground is a very predictable western with very predictable special effects (how many dynamite blow-ups in slow motion with people flying have you seen lately?)

The young female survivor of a stage coach massacre has got "sand" and alternates between being feisty and vulnerable on a very predictable basis. The estranged son of Burt is also heroic but oversleeps on the trail of the bad guys. The two veterans and the two young people pull together in the end to a very predictable climactic shoot-em-up with a very predictable outcome. Have I said this movie is totally formulaic and predictable?

Nevertheless, Burt and Bruce are always worth the price of admission, so I'd watch it, but not expect too many surprises. Hopefully next time the producers will actually hire writers who can develop characters and throw a few surprises in to spice up the movie.

hard to kill.......2005-08-06

Another good movie of Bruce Dern as Marshal Hutchinson still crafty as he was in the movie "Hang Them High" and that was 30 yr's ago and still he looks good and very impressive.Burt and Bruce has such a good understanding that it seems both injoyed making this movie.Burt Reynolds as John McKay who was being transfered to Yuma Prison along with David Figlioli as Billy Bucklin as the chief villian and rest of the hardend criminal's in a prison van and they breakout leaving Burt Reynolds to die in the desert without water or horse. Thats where the story starts.The Outdoor Photography is really beautiful.The sunset in the mountains is breath taking.Marshal's sister married john McKay and had a son named joshua (Seth Peterson)who was broughtup by the marshal and he becomes his deputy and a decent citizen.Joshua rescue's a Elizabeth Kennedy (Amy Jo Johnson) on the way following the tracks of escapies.Its a deadly game of Manhunt,Story is Written by a famous writer Frank Q Dobbs (Johnson County War, Streets of Laredo)It was also directed by him. I liked this movie as any other good old western.

This is so bad that you just have to see it. Terrible movie, but it is destined to become a cult classic because it is actually quite humorous in a subtle way. Almost melodramatic like an oldtime play. Great musical score too.

Nonsense.......2006-07-30

This movie is so bad it is hard to know where to start. First, if you like four beautiful women in tight pants showing lots of cleavage, who, after shooting some bottles off a fence, become accomplished gunslingers and hit everything they shot at, whether they aim at it or not, and you don't mind a thin plot and dumb dialog, then this is the movie for you.

If, however, you like something at least remotely close to the old west, has a plot and decent dialog, this movie is not for you. In one scene, the girls are taking target practice. The only problem is, they are standing in front of a road with automobile tire tracks visible. Sure not the old west I have spent some time researching.

Watch it on TV when it comes, but save your money.

Kelly Gets Her Gun.......2005-12-23

Kelly LeBrock is co-star of this movie and looks very pretty. Kelly LeBrock does not appear nude in Hard Bounty. A couple of the other female leads appear topless, but Kelly does not. The story involves Kelly vowing to take revenge upon the man who killed her sister. Along with two of her female companions and the male lead, Kelly becomes a gunslinger who sets out to find the killer. Yes, the movie is pretty dumb, but if you like bad cinema, then this one has its charms. This would fit in nicely with 'Bad Girls' and "Quick and the Dead' as part of a triple feature.

Don't Waste Your Money.......2004-03-17

Ridiculous story. The only good thing about this movie is the soundtrack. Such a waste of good music. Just pitiful.

Thought this was a well made movie with a lot of action in it. I thought it brought to life the women had back in those days to survive.
