Some called it a snooze-fest, while others tearfully clutched their Kleenex. In any case, Clint Eastwood was an unusual and (as it turned out) perceptive choice to direct and costar in this lush adaptation of Robert James Waller's phenomenally bestselling novel. Meryl Streep costars as Francesca, the lonely Iowa farmer's wife who is instantly attracted to Robert (Eastwood), the photographer from National Geographic who is in the area to photograph the bridges along Iowa's rural roadways. The two fall in love while Francesca's husband and children are away at a county fair, but the story's passion and lasting appeal derive from their decision to part forever after just a few brief days of intimate connection. Superbly acted with an emphasis on quiet, graceful moments of tender revelation, the film builds to a crescendo of powerful and conflicting emotions. Like David Lean's Brief Encounter (to which it bears marked similarities), The Bridges of Madison County is destined to become one of the classic movie love stories. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful love story.......2007-09-09
When I went to see this movie in the theatre years ago, I was so sure that I wasn't going to like this film. There was a loud rumbling in the romance community about this story being written by a man. At the time there were a lot of them. This one, Message in a Bottle and a Walk to Remember shortly after. So there I was in all my huffy glory, glaring at the screen. But all that nonesense was forgotten as this wonderful story started to unfold. Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep had me smiling and melting in this forbidden love story in no time flat. By the time we reach the scene where Eastwood is standing in the middle of the street during a rain down pour, I was begging her to get out the car. Run, girl. Run to your true soul mate! Ah, amour. So despite my prejudices I fell helplessly in love with this story--and you will too. Highly recommended.
BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY.......2007-08-28
I own all of Eastwood movies.Including..Rawhide series. All his motion pictures are widescreen...all! What about'.....Madison County?Who in the world didn't stop to think..this too should be in widescreen..to get the whole pictureSCOPE of this great Romatic future classic.I do have it also on Laser Disc.& it's in widescreen.I just run a print to a blank dvd for now.
Come on you people who sell these movies..if nothing else...put both versions on dvd. They do that you know?
Loved This Movie ,Made Me Cry.......2007-08-25
I wasn't sure I would like this movie since I had already read the book and fell in love with this story.
I'll have to admit Clint Eastwood & Merle Streep did a beautiful job. There were parts that were left out of course but all in all a very good movie, still the book was much better and left me wanting more.
Too bad there cannot be a sequel since both characters are now deceased.
The only part I did not like was the beginning where her children found the story of her love story. I hated the actions of the son or maybe it was the actor.
Crud story, glorifying adultery - disgusting trash.......2007-08-15
This movie makes me sick. Basically it's a movie about a woman who betrays her marriage vows, betrays her husband, betrays her children. It's a movie about a man that commits sin by persuing a sexual relationship with a married woman. The first time I watched this movie (and the last) I found myself hoping the husband would come home and catch the two in the act. He would have been justified in kicking the snot out the filthy no good womanizer. There's no repentance for sin in this movie, no confession of guilt. Heck, for all we know the wicked man gave the married woman a mean case of the herps and then moved on to the next town where he did it all over again (that's the way these people are) How many marriages have been wrecked by this type of thing? And they throw it up on the big screen and package it as a love story? No, it's not a love story. It's a story of human depravity at its worst. If this movie had been advertised as such, I would give it 5 stars for it displays wickedness of unrepentant human hearts in grand fashion. But since this movie tries to pass itself off as a romantic interlude between two lonely adults.. uh uh. It's just horrible, new age agenda laden, anti-christian schlock. Avoid it unless you enjoy throwing up in disgust.
It only takes one love to complete the journey ..........2007-07-22
This review is dedicated to the boy who once slugged his subject line "To the girl who wisely wouldn't date me in the `60s." A road less traveled out of fear for the unknown can seem like your downfall. But, harbor no regrets. In fact there are paths we take to help fill the void. As trite as this may sound, one of those paths can be a great movie. "The Bridges of Madison County" has become both a life-saving tool (a bit dramatic) and an obsession for me. The DVD places its two main characters, brilliantly acted out by Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep, into a state of infinite thoughts that transcend all boundaries. In his novel, Robert James Waller poignantly describes the fuse used to shape a lifetime of bliss in just four days, scenes the DVD expertly portrays and brings to life. Directed by Clint Eastwood, this epic tale is a much-needed time warp to a better place through the eyes of Francesca Johnson and Robert Kincaid, who share a passion for common ground that only comes along once.

The writer of cheerleader classic Bring It On makes her directing debut with another movie built around a classic sport for girls: gymnastics. No one knows why Haley Graham (Missy Peregrym, Life As We Know It) walked away in the middle of a high-profile gymnastics competition--but after given a choice between returning to gymnastics or going to juvenile detention, Haley finds herself under the tutelage of Burt Vickerman (Jeff Bridges, The Big Lebowski, Fearless), a trainer with a tough-love approach and a dubious reputation for getting his students injured. As they learn to work together, they discover they share a hatred for the narrow, unbending rules by which gymnastic routines are judged. Almost all sports movies are fables of wild talent getting harnessed by discipline. In Stick It, wild talent bites back with a little political awakening--in fact, the movie's main weakness is that it doesn't get political enough; the rebellion at the end happens too quickly, too easily. But what you'll remember from the movie are sequences that revel in the sheer beauty of gymnastics, montages that fuse the visual styles of Busby Berkeley and Leni Riefenstahl into a dizzying adulation of grace and athleticism. --Bret Fetzer
Description
From the writer of BRING IT ON comes STICK IT, the fun, irreverent comedy that turns the competitive world of gymnastics on its head. After walking out on her teammates at the gymnastics championships two years before, the talented but rebellious Haley Graham is forced to return to the rigid world of rules, catfights, and spandex. Her in-your-face attitude quickly collides with her hard-nosed coach and teammates. But as her love of the sport resurfaces, Haley slowly earns their respect by doing what she does best -- tossing out the rules. And in the process, she learns there are more valuable things to win in life than medals and ribbons.
Customer Reviews:
Wow, I really love this.......2007-09-14
Just thinking about what a deliberate scratch can mean really gets me thinking. Much of the training in the early part of the movie looks excruciating, like sitting in a tub full of ice cubes at times, but the tension between the performers and the judges is what really builds during this movie, rightly called "Stick It." Listening to the cast comments on the deleted scenes helped me lighten up after the confrontations that the movie finally portrays. Like you won't believe the stuff that got cut.
Not So Nice World of Competitive Gymnastics.......2007-07-28
Stick It is one of those sports films that you come away from seeing feeling that it was better than you thought it would be but could have been so much better.
Haley Graham (Missy Peregrym) is a wild child. She was once a gymnast who showed great promise before unexpectedly walked away from the sport. After some troubles at home she is sent to the Vickerman Gymnastics Academy run by the surly Burt Vickerman (Jeff Bridges). It is here that she must once again prove herself and find a new start.
This is not Oscar material but it is a good way to spend a few hours in a darkened theatre. The acting is spotty but acceptable. Peregrym shines as Haley but she comes across as a little to cute to be the punky troublemaker that she is made out to be. Bridges is his usual self and his acting is good but this does not appear to be one of his more challenging roles. There is good support from the actual gymnasts who filled in as doubles for the main characters. The secondary characters are somewhat less well developed but are played decently by Vanessa Lengies (Joanne Charis), Nikki SooHoo (Wei Wei Yong) and Maddy Curley (Mina Hoyt).
The film has an MTV feel with lots of cuts and booming soundtrack. It's target audience tween and teenage girls and it will be quite effective with this age group. It even teaches a lesson in that things can be changed by working together to make a difference. First time director Jessica Bendinger has done a fine job with her debut film.
The true highlight of this disc resides in its bonus features. The film has two comentaries: one by Bendinger and her primary actresses Lengies and Peregrym, the second by Bendinger and DP, Daryn Okada and editor, Troy Takaki. Also featured are 8 deleted scenes with multiple commentaries, a intoductory featurette of the actual gymnasts who acted as stunt doubles, slowed down uneven bar routines (also with optional comentary); routines performed by the elite gymnasts( with commentary) and two music videos.
As mentioned this is not a bad film to see with your family and is definately worth a rental.
Gymnastics+Jeff Bridges=5 Stars-Posturing=2 Stars.......2007-06-29
It's about time a gymnastics movie was made to introduce the rest of America to this wonderful sport that gives girls superpowers. But it's a silent transformation and a silent joy that is not properly represented with the embarassing gesticulations accompanying "trash talking" in lieu of dialogue or character development through acting. This movie has moments of pure joy but its ruined by an uglification of the athletes' personalities and an exaggerated gung ho soundtrack. It tries really hard to have some kind of angsty conflict storyline. There is so much posturing in the dialogue of this movie that Jeff Bridges' coolness can't even save this from being an embarassing project for him.
This movie took forever to appear on cable tv so I almost bought the dvd just because it was about gymnastics and Jeff Bridges is in it. When I finally watched it on cable, I could barely sit through it. I felt embarassment watching it. I can't even rewatch it. I think I have to watch it with the sound off. Just when I find myself relaxing and enjoying the gymnastics, someone says something so vain and plastic and unintelligently rude that passes for Hollywood caliber dialogue that I am plunged into a sense of shame for almost enjoying this movie. OMG. This movie could have been such a nice movie for teens and included in that group of movies that go down easy for young people and get rewatched by them. I am not a fan of Kirsten Dunst and Missy Peregrym is definitely watchable but I have to say that Bring It On! even with Eliza Dushku bizarre delivery is more watchable than this movie.
This movie tries too hard but it lacks the integrity and talent to turn effort into something that rings true which is something that this sport deserves.
THE BEST SERVICE ALWAYS!!!.......2007-05-15
The eternal school band within the high school life is enriched with the Disney flavor of friendship and teamwork to rise the emotions. Wonderful music and a careful image to show the best of human virtues.
This is an excellent product and not available in stores such Sears and Mixup Mexico because Disney's House is not delivering this material.
The package and the just new out of the print material is great.
The service is FAST, really FAST and always excellente and very personal. They follow up your order.
Great Movies Don't Discriminate.......2007-03-18
I'm surprised by some of the negative reviews of this movie. I rented this last night to watch with my mom and we both really enjoyed it. Neither one of us are gymnasts (or under 13 for that matter) or even cared that much for bring it on, but Stick It was extremely likeable nonetheless.
Overall, my favorite thing about the movie is in the witty commentary and the humor that the movie sticks in very appropriately. I think Hayley was just hilarious, whether she was talking or thinking. She has a rather darkly sarcastic humor, but its very tasteful and witty. The not-so-smart Johann, complimenting the role of the bitchy teammate originally, gives a lot of comedic relief as well [Mina - "She got her GED when she was 15"
Johann - "What does drunk driving have to do with any of this?"]. Mina and Wei-Wei are somewhat minor characters but I can't help but find them a little bit entertaining even by their casual expressions, the actresses did an excellent job making them seem minor but still multi-dimensional enough to be amusing and loveable.
It was also a pleasant surprise that nearly all of the girls in this film are actually showed as being very strong and athletic. One reviewer said that the practice sessions were hard to watch, but I thought the opposite. If they skipped the practice sessions a huge part of the movie would have been taken away and detracted from its ultimate message. I enjoyed the practice sessions, it's not every day that you see teen girls embracing their strength and the girls were so much more attractive than the food deprived models that seem to run the media otherwise. I mentioned before, and I'll say it again that I do not do gymnastics and I don't think I ever will. However, I definitely found this movie inspiring, and I have a lot of respect for these athletes in the shape they must achieve to compete.
And as for what age group would enjoy this ... I definitely think it appeals to a wide spectrum. My mom and I were originally watching this but both my older brother and my younger brother were intrigued before the end and came to watch as well. I'm 16, my brothers are 13 and 18, and my mom is... well, yeah mommy age. But it doesn't take a certain gender or age to enjoy this movie.

Customer Reviews:
Horrible picture quality does not help out this below average movie. It also doesn't help that it is badly full screened. .......2007-01-26
The movie starts out good enough with Chang Yi playing his usual white haired villain role and makes it clear that he is the king of stick fighters and looks to take down all others. Don Wong Tao plays the young playboy who shows to be a wimp after years of negleting his kung fu practice. When his 3 uncles hear about Chang Yi going around taking down stick schools they send Wong Tao away so that he can learn kung fu and become a man. Wong Chi Sang is good as one of the 3 uncles but the movie is just overall horrible. The comedy doesn't work very well, the fighting is not great, and the story overall is just kind of there and doing nothing until people fight. This movie is actually very similiar to 'Shaolin Iron Claws', only a little bit better and they fight with sticks instead of fighting open handed. After sucking me in with Chang Yi's good polework in his first scene, I had a lot of trouble sitting through the rest of the movie until they finally fight again at the end. This fight I have to say was actually very exciting though very short. It is so good that it almost bumps the movie up to a 3 but the horri-awful picture quality and it's terrible full screen presentation almost makes me give this movie the lowest rating possible of 1 star. Of course the DVD is from Video Asia so I shouldn't have expected too much.
Old "skool' kung fu!!.......2006-06-11
After seeing the hype right here on amazon,,I rushed out to get this flick,,,,,it o.k,,,3 stars at best!! However, grossly over rated in my opinion. Of all the weapons you see in old school kung movies,,,there 's nothing special about stick fighting kung fu!! There 's no question the story is good,,the fight scenes good,,,however, you see one stick fights, and you see them all. Honestly,,after the first stick fight, there were no more suprizes in the flick, it got really boaring and predictable,,it only seemed and feel like the same scenes over and over repeating itself!!
Shaolin Invincible Sticks - .......2005-08-26
Hey, another movie with one of those white-haired villans that must be "ELIMINATED." How did I guess that? Loved this flick also. Fighting scenes "tough" - stick matches "rough" - I can't complain at all. Overdubs - not bad. I can live with some bad overdubs if the flick is "tight."
Watch closely as this white-haired villan goes from school to school challenging and destroying anyone who knows stick fighting. This guy is really good with his stick/pole and it's very difficult for others to beat him. What is kind of bizzare about this one is that anyone who knows stick fighting is his enemy. I like this flick so much that I transferred it to my PDA and watch it sometimes at work. Some of the stick fighting scenes will have you seriously cracking up. You will surely play a few of these scenes over and over again!
By all means please see my other reviews so you won't get stuck with worthless Kung Fu [...] that's not worth the disc it was copied to. The plot keeps you awake throughout! Definetly in my top 5%. You wont go wrong with this one at all.
awsome kung fu.......2004-07-27

Top notch!!.......2003-09-14
This is the film that sets standards for other films.
Wong Tao and Chang Yi are sesational!

Menus are also hosted by Gordon(some are quite funny).
A great package!

On the border of genius.......2007-06-27
Calexico is a great band, though not necessarily a great live band. Invite Mariachi de Luna de Luz to the party and that's taken care of. Excellent musicianship and the charisma of the fine musicians of De Luna de Luz makes this DVD a fine experience. All the tradition of mariachi music with the artistry of Joey Burns and Co. Discover the next new best thing.
pleasant journey.......2007-01-28
what a find! will watch and listen to this again and again and again.
5 stars for the music & extras, 3 for the film direction.......2005-11-28
I've been a huge Calexico fan for about three years now, and since I live in Austin, I've been lucky enough to see them at SXSW and ACLFest. So to say I was looking forward to the concert DVD is a serious understatement.
In this show, their sound is great, as always. But there's something about the conventional style of direction and the remoteness of the large stage (singer/guitarist Joey Burns normally is MUCH more animated and connects with the audience a lot better) that gives it a "PBS Pledge Week" feel. It seems more like a recital than a rock concert. The only thing that's consistently watchable is drummer John Convertino's amazingly expressive, dynamic technique (it's like he treats the sticks like paintbrushes).
The music is awesome and the extras are really nice, so I'll only take one star off. Buy or rent it, but do NOT think it's a good subsitute for seeing them live.
The best live music performance on video I've ever seen!.......2005-11-25
The dvd is so good you will watch it many times over, never getting tired of it. Great performances, very dynamic. Excellent sound and camera work. I throw it on for background music around the house a lot and have to stop and watch it for a few songs every tome I pass thru the room. Closest thing to their live shows available.
Wish I'd seen them live.......2005-08-10
I suppose I could have gone to this concert, but I didn't know about it at the time. The DVD certainly made me wish I had. The DVD goes from a relatively minimalist start to bringing in the mariachis of Luz de Luna. Lulu Olivera makes a powerful performance towards the end. There is plenty of bonus material, including tour footage, a "making of" feature on Feast of Wire and some videos. A worthwhile purchase for any Calexico fan, certainly.

Fleetwood Mac drummer and cofounder Mick Fleetwood comes across in this hour-long documentary as a doggedly persistent, admittedly flawed, but ultimately satisfied survivor of some 35 years in the rock & roll trenches. Fleetwood Mac's long and sometimes weird history is documented, from the days when they were led by the fiery blues guitarist Peter Green through the triumphant Buckingham-Nicks years. In the end, though, the program is more Mick than Mac, with a warts-and-all approach that doesn't shy away from his various addictions, two failed marriages, assorted affairs, and, finally, redemption in the arms of his current wife, Lynn. As for the doggedly persistent part, consider this: Fleetwood was so determined to keep the band together that he once took first wife Jenny on tour despite knowing that she was having an affair with another band member. That didn't work, needless to say, but for the most part, Mick Fleetwood's done all right. --Sam Graham
Description
Mick Fleetwood cast a long shadow as the co-founder of one of rock's most successful bands--Fleetwood Mac. He was the lanky, frenzied drummer whose unorthodox style drove the band's luscious harmonies and whose slightly crazed persona balanced out the group's ethereal qualities. In this definitive portrait of a life lived within one of rock 'n' roll's most turbulent groups, the story traces Mick Fleetwood's life from his childhood to his early career playing with the world's greatest blues musicians to his years with Fleetwood Mac. Formed in 1967, the group began with its roots firmly planted in the blues and evolved toward pop-rock as the line-up changed. Ironically, Fleetwood Mac's most successful album, "Rumours," with its carefree melodies and bouncy rhythms, was written about the internal tensions that eventually tore the band apart. Includes interviews with B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, Peter Green, John McVie, Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham, and John Mayall!
Customer Reviews:
It's a keeper.......2004-06-28
Ok, despite what other reviewers said, if you keep in mind that this DVD -- although released much later than Mick's autobiography -- is basically the video representation of that autobiography, then it's right on cue. It's about MICK, and it's about Mick up to the time the autobio was written (with the exception of Mick's admission to now being sober and the pic of his infant daughters). It's not going to have interviews with Dave Mason or Bekka Bramlett, or the Vito / Burnett years because that came AFTER the autobio, Folks.
If you're looking to see Stevie hit the high notes on "Stand Back" or seeing Lindsey finger pick a guitar like no other, this is NOT the dvd for you -- buy a performance recording instead. If you're a Mac fan interested in Mick as an individual and if you're interested in the band history, you'll find that here.
Never Thought I Could Not Like Something By Fleetwood Mac.......2004-05-18
There is so much potential for an incredibly great story here....Mick's life, his daughters, high friends, jeesh....even Christine is interviewed a lot here, not to mention Peter Green......wish Jeremy could have been part of this.....and why not talk to the later-day Macs like Dave Mason? Even the best licks and lyrics are thin.....ok so they got Stevie singing silver spoon at the right moment (duh!), but there were so many opportunities for really great segments from the old films and tracks......the band is always about the music and there simply wasn't enough of it to make this a great DVD. Is is worth it for the serious fan? Of course it is, which is why I can recommend it, but if you are looking for insight into the band I would suggest starting with the Dance DVD first.....it's somewhat biographical and definitely not the same as the CD.
One of the better Fleetwood Mac related documentaries.......2004-01-01
I really enjoyed this release. It's one of the few Fleetwood Mac documentaries that actually tells the story of the band BEFORE Buckingham and Nicks joined in 1974. Of course, there's the whole Rumours schtick that's been said over and over. It was nice to be able to see and hear Judy Wong since she's been connected with the band for years and years.
My BIG disappointment was the fact that basically everything from 1983 on is ignored from Mick's two solo albums, the four Fleetwood Mac albums and the addition of Rick Vito, Billy Burnette, Bekka Bramlett and Dave Mason and the departure of Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie.
That being said, I was still pleased with my purchase, if but for the humourous interviews with one Christine McVie.
Very entertaining!.......2003-10-18
This really is not a bad biography, contrary to what other reviewers may say. I mean, let's face it, you're not gonna buy this unless you really like Fleetwood Mac. So it doesn't need to be everything to everyone. It could honestly be more Mick-centric I suppose, but I love the interviews with the Fleetwood Mac bandmates. The rarely interviewed Christine McVie is just a joy to watch. There are some great video clips of the band in the 70s that are fantastic, especially since they match up with a lot of photos you may have seen over the years. This alludes to some of the footage that we may (hopefully!) see in the future.
Who cares? Just give me new FM music........2002-11-13
I didn't purchase this DVD and I don't plan on it. I may be out of line as I write the following since I didn't watch the DVD:
There have been so many FM biographies. How many times will each member going to tell the stories of the Rumours era, leaving the band, re-joining the band, the plethora of drugs, the luxuries, etc.
I've been a fan of their music for 15 years. It's time that they move on and stop talking about their indulgent past.

A Good Stick Fighting DVD for Beginners.......2006-08-15
"Filipino Stick Fighting" taught by Lester Griffins is a good beginners DVD. Lester Griffins demonstrates basic blocks, strikes and combinations, as well as simple footwork to be used with these techniques.
The DVD runs about 55 minutes; about 30 minutes of which is good instruction. There are several minutes of full-contact stick fighting shown at the end of the DVD (Dog Brothers stuff) which is worth seeing, but between these two segments is Griffins trying to demonstrate stick fighting drills in a swimming pool. Training in water is a useful technique, but I felt the swimming pool segment distracted from the quality of an otherwise decent instructional DVD.
I have mixed feelings about this DVD. Lester Griffins clearly has skill in stick fighting, and one can learn some basic techniques from studying this DVD, but there is nothing that makes this DVD stand out from other stick fighting DVD / Videos on the market.
Good DVD on stick fighting.......2005-07-27
Lester "Surf Dog" Griffin is still stick fighting, as he was at the most recent June 2005 Dog Brothers Gathering. This tape is quite educational, as it shows the progression of protective equipment and weapons over all of the years of Marc Denny's Gathering of the Pack event. Griffin demonstrates some of the Dog Brother material from basic drill to harder contact. Every now and then, the otherwise serious-faced instructor injects some humor in his training, such as splattering a watermelon or training in the pool. I was waiting for the pool to be drained to make way for the skateboards ! Perhaps we'll see some surf or skateboard fighting in his next tape.
The fellow is in great shape, and offers his training methods as well as some footage of Dog Brothers stickfighting. This tape fills a niche between the usual FMA video of tons of techniques and the excellent Dog Brother instructional tapes which use fight excerpts as illustrations.
Overall, a good buy. There is one production issue with crackling audio when Griffin places a mask over his wireless microphone, but otherwise, this video is well-vtaped and produced. The video and audio quality are pristine, though the the picture used to sell this product implies an older product.
Please update the picture to do your material justice !
