The folks at Pixar can do no wrong with Monsters, Inc., the studio's fourth feature film, which stretches the computer animation format in terms of both technical complexity and emotional impact. The giant, blue-furred James P. "Sulley" Sullivan (wonderfully voiced by John Goodman) is a scare-monster extraordinaire in the hidden world of Monstropolis, where the scaring of kids is an imperative in order to keep the entire city running. Beyond the competition to be the best at the business, Sullivan and his assistant, the one-eyed Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal), discover what happens when the real world interacts with theirs in the form of a 2-year-old baby girl dubbed "Boo," who accidentally sneaks into the monster world with Sulley one night. Director Pete Doctor and codirectors David Silverman and Lee Unkrich follow the Pixar (Toy Story) blueprint with an imaginative scenario, fun characters, and ace comic timing. By the last heart-tugging shot, kids may never look at monsters the same, nor artists at what computer animation can do in the hands of magicians. --Doug Thomas

5 out of 5 stars Wish there were a sequel!.......2007-06-28

It was that good! Unfortunately they didn't leave a door open for a sequel. Great story about the Monsters all little kids fear in their bed at night, and their interaction with those kids. It gives you the persepective from the other side of your closet door where the Monsters live. The characters are very lovable. Great, great comedy sequences, you will be laughing out loud! Unique story line. "Loving" out-come. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars WOW!! What a great movie.. This movie should live on FOREVER!!!.......2007-06-22

This movie was great and it was really enjoyable and funny. I have had this movie since it came out as I went to see it in the movie theater. This would be my favorite movie of all time. Sulley(James P. Sullivan) and Mike Wazowski (the main characters of this movie) are my favorite characters in this movie and are my two favorite characters in any movie. Randall Boggs would be my third favorite character in the movie because he makes me LAUGH!! But he gets destroyed into a trailor during my favorite part of the movie which is when Mike and Sulley are hanging or flying on doors to try to get Boo home. Boo is my least favorite character in this movie because she CRIES a lot during the movie and just not my favorite. Celia, who Mike is in love with isn't all that great too. But I think Roz is great. She makes me laugh when she tells Mike that he didn't turn in his paperwork. and Mr. Waternoose would be my 5th and last most favorite character in this movie till he gets arrested by the CDA. Also, the part where Mike and Sulley go to Himalayas is great because they're in a BLIZZARD!! The worst part of the movie is when Sulley and Mike take Boo home that's when I feel to cry. But overall, this is a really great movie which I wish I could give this 10 stars. Please get this movie but Shrek s$cked!!!
Best film of the year.

5 out of 5 stars Power-ful Kiddie Entertainment.......2007-06-21

Some of the best stories for children have presented their worst fears only to have the menace brought down to size. "Jack and the Beanstalk" works that way perfectly. 'Monsters, Inc.' helps to tuck the kiddies in and give them the giggles, too. Taking near day-glow colors, the Monsters in this fluid Pixar picture are hideously cute. They live in a "green" world where the renewable resource of children's fright powers the Monster community. Looking like the sorts in (Lucas Films, Ltd. is credited here) a 'Star Wars' bar scene, the film's focus is on the power company where the employees go through magic doors, their portals to children's bedrooms where the fright factor generates their power plant.

Heading the troops is big blue "Sully" (John Goodman) a good natured monster, proud of his ability to be the equivalent of "Employee of the Month". Keeping track of his generating power, he is out to set a plant record. His green, one-eyed sidekick, Mike Wazowski, (Billy Crystal) has a Martian appearance, but his voice couldn't scare a mouse. He is smitten by one-eyed purple princess, Shroopsy with hydra hair (snake braids). They all face their competition with rascally Randall, (perfectly villainous, Steve Buscemi) the salamander-like monster with invisible capabilities. Pivotal to the plot is Mr. Waternoose, (James Coburn) a tycoon who resembles a tarantula in a three-piece suit. In the causality is 'Silkwood'-like contamination if any child or remnant remains in the Monster world. (In other words: Just like parents often say about insects or some animals: "They're more afraid of [children], than [they] are of them.") Sully and James come across "Boo" whom they find in their best interests to return to the dark realm of her own bedroom.

Formidable to the fore, 'Monsters,..." takes a premise that could have been a dumb non-starter, and provides supporting plot structures with enough heft to turn the adventure on. With Pixar animation, the movement is flowing enough to take the technological edge off the look, and Andrew Stanton and Daniel Gerson's screenplay keep the dialogue fresh and funny. Director Pete Docter gives the movie proper assembly. 'Monsters, Inc.' is therapeutically good for children's dreamscapes as well as their funny bones. (Highly recommended to rent and to own.)

Hey it's Mike,
Wow!! What a great movie this is. This is by far my favorite movie due to the presence of Mike and Sulley. There is not a lot of great movies out there, but this one is one of the very best!! Sulley, Mike, Randall, Roz, and Waternoose are all great characters and 3 of them are really funny! Boo and Celia are my two least favorite characters in the film. The best part of this movie is the Flying on Doors part where Randall gets destroyed.
The end is the saddest part of the movie when Sulley and Mike take Boo home.

Part of growing up is discovering something that inspires a true passion within and allowing that passion to guide one's actions and choices. The process of self-discovery isn't easy, and when 15-year-old Patrick McCardle (High School Musical's Zac Efron) realizes that playing baseball is more his father's dream than his own, it's an unlikely friendship with old man Houston Jones (Bill Cobbs), a recluse and horse trainer, that inspires Patrick's newfound passion for the exciting world of horse jumping. Patrick and his father (William R. Moses) clash over Patrick's decision to give up baseball and spend time training for the Derby Cup race with Houston, but eventually Patrick and his father come to a mutual understanding and gain a whole new sense of respect for one another as they begin to really talk about and listen to each other's dreams and desires. The road to becoming a derby rider is difficult, but as Houston and Patrick work together, the two share dreams and disappointments and become incredibly close. In the end, Houston, a most unlikely role model, winds up having a profoundly positive impact on Patrick's life both on and off the racetrack. (Ages 5 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars Pleasant family film.......2007-08-10

15-year old Patrick (Zac Efron) is new in town and has problems: He can't seem to please his jock father (William R. Moses) and he runs afoul of Randy, the town bully, when both boys are attracted to the same pretty girl. Patrick's only friend is one-time horse trainer and long-time alcoholic, Houston Jones (Bill Cobbs), who sees something special in the boy. Houston gives him a horse and trains him to ride in the State Steeplechase Cup race, but Randy, the reigning champ, decides to make Patrick's life miserable.

This low-budget but pleasant 2005 film was never shown in theatres, but has been released on DVD following Zac Efron's mega-successes in High School Musical (Encore Edition) and Hairspray. There's no denying Efron's Tiger Beat-cuteness, and he does a fine job in an undemanding role, but if you want to see a real actor, take a look at Bill Cobbs. He's been playing small character parts in TV and movies for years, but this time he's the star and absolutely owns the screen. His craggy face and gravelly voice masterfully express the only real emotion in the film and he's a pleasure to watch.

The story plays like an After School Special; all obstacles are easily overcome - the kid goes from non-rider to race winner, bonds with his father, and gets the girl - all in a matter of weeks. Adults may find it predictable and a bit bland, but the wholesome message about finding your passion and working hard for it makes "The Derby Stallion" just right for family viewing.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Movie.......2007-07-12

Our granddaughter is 6 years old, and loves anything to do with horses. She has watched this movie many, many times. Its a great story for the family also.

4 out of 5 stars Great Family Film!.......2007-06-29

I was encouraged to purchase this DVD by my fifteen-year-old sister, she's been a big fan of Zac Efron's from "High School Musical". She was not disappointed - we both loved it (plus Zac is really cute)! It's a sweet story and has a lot of positive messages. What a pleasure to sit down and see a nice family film again... it's a rarity. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Wins Our Derby.......2007-06-25

With all the junk out there, it's nice to watch a movie with such positive values and one which can be shared with the whole family. Zac Efron is endearing -- it's not surprising he has soared to stardom in "High School Musical." And Bill Cobbs as the wise old horseman is great. I loved the mentor chemistry between them. There is a lot to like in this movie and I recommend it heartily.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I was hoping for..........2007-06-24

The Derby Stallion could have been done alot better. It appeared to be a very low budget film. Its about this boy who decides he wants to ride steeplechase and convinces his parents to allow him to. The riding was very sloppy and some of the sences of him first riding were un realistic and alot of it was put into slow motion, like when he was first learning to jump. The two horses that played in the movie were also two completley different colors. The movie idea was good, but they could have spent more time on teaching the actor to ride and handle horses instead of what appeared to be a very rushed movie. Not a good choice for people who know a thing or two about horses.

Nora Ephron wrote the brisk screenplay for this 1989 romantic comedy, director Rob Reiner made a nicely glossy New York story (very much in a Woody Allen vein) out of it, and Billy Crystal's unstoppable charm made it something really special. Crystal and Meg Ryan play longtime platonic friends who keep dancing around their deeper feelings for one another, and Bruno Kirby and Carrie Fisher are their respective pals who fall in love and get married. Ryan doesn't get a lot of funny material, but her performance is typically alive and intuitive, and she more than holds her own with Crystal's comic motor mouth and sweet sentimentality. Reiner is on comfortable ground, liberated from the burden of making serious statements in the lead-footed manner of subsequent features. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars The best.......2007-08-08

Eighteen years after its release, When Harry Met Sally remains the standard--the romantic comedy against which all others are measured (and often fail). Like so many other people, I loved it instantly when I saw it in a theater, and after so many romances, stories, break-ups, and life, it still feels to me as true as it did then. The chemistry between Ryan and Crystal is great. She is gorgeous and charming; he makes pessimism and neurosis funny. Witty, delightful, romantic -- thank you, Ms. Ephron and Mr. Reiner for giving us this wonderful movie.

4 out of 5 stars My Favorite Movie!.......2007-05-22

I've seen this movie a dozen times and love it everytime. It's a perfect romantic movie. I also love "You've Got Mail" . Both have great endings!

4 out of 5 stars Thoughts on You've Got Mail.......2007-05-18

I totally enjoyed this movie, Billy Crystal Is as always a great watch, plus Meg Ryan is unbeatable. When I see a movie like this I get to believing the actors are really like this in real life. I watch movies to be entertained, this movie entertained me. I liked this more than Sleepless in Seattle, mostly because Meg Ryan was in it more.

5 out of 5 stars classic Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan flick.......2007-04-04

Lots of comical, dry and witty humor.

5 out of 5 stars MY VERY MOST FAVORITIST ROMANCE MOVIE.......2007-04-03

Great movie...well acted, well cast....a real sociological commentary on romance and dating in the 1980s. Who doesn't love Meg Ryan before she screwed up her life and lips? And life is never funnier than when seen through the eyes of Billy Crystal! If you haven't seen "When Harry Met Sally", you better!

3 out of 5 stars it's okay........2006-03-08

i liked the movie because lauren hays is in it. that the reason why i bought it. however you are better off just renting it if you can or borrowing it from a friend. i like the fact that it was basically an all girl adventure.(that's just me.) and inspite of the fact that it's soft porn i apprieciate the fact the makers of the film tried to make it look like a bigger picture than it actually was, they had good imagination. they worked very hard on it - i could tell. and even though it is not a really good movie i think they did a really good effort. i'll say this about it. it was trying to be a takeoff of the tomb raider flicks, and at that i think they were much more better than the real thing, at least they tried to tell a story. so i guess i recommend it. but i got it because of lauren hays and i could really give a rats ass about the rest. i leave it up to the personal taste of others to decide.

1 out of 5 stars Not good enough for Cheesy Movie Night........2006-01-29

About two or three times a year I host an event I call "Cheesy Movie Night", wherein a half-dozen people get invited to taste carefully selected cheeses, followed by an evening of one or two odd or "so-bad-they're-good" movies from my collection.

I bought Womb Raider to add to that collection, mostly on the strength of the soundtrack and a couple of reviews.

Big mistake.

I wasn't expecting much, of course, but what I got was so bad I wouldn't show it to my friends for risk of them avoiding my next party. It tries for silly, sexy and exotic, but instead hits stupid, skilless and painfully boring. It sports a "shot on video" look as flat as a daytime soap opera, some of the simplest edits are obviously (and frequently) out of sequence, and it even makes the laughable mistake of cutting to exactly the same shot, something I haven't seen since "Manos, Hands of Fate"!

The female lead is obviously trying to do decent work, but she's the only one. No one else is competent, cool or remotely sexy. It's like an on-location XXX film without the dubious benefit of the hardcore sex. I don't mind goofy, silly or unintentionally hilarious, but simply put Womb Raider is plain stupid.

Halfway decent soundtrack, however...

4 out of 5 stars Va Va Womb!!.......2005-10-05

Lots of fun. Girls are sexy. If you like Seduction Cinema stuff this is even better -- better looking and better shot. Not bad for a T&A. My only knock -- the bad guys are too hokey!!

--Tom Keogh

Description

"Brimming over with style, intelligence and flashing wit" (Rolling Stone), this "splendid and irresistible" (Los Angeles Times) film from director Rob Reiner(American President is one of the best-loved romantic comedies of all time. Featuring dazzling performances from Meg Ryan, Billy Crystal, Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby, exceptional music from Harry Connick Jr., and an Oscar(r)-nominated* screenplay by Nora Ephron, When Harry Met Sally is an "explosively funny" commentary on friendship, courtships - and other hardships - of the modern age (Newsweek)! Will sex ruin a perfect relationship between a man and a woman? that's what Harry (Crystal) and Sally (Ryan) debate during their travels from Chicago to New York. And eleven years and later, they're still no closer to finding the answer. Will these two best friends ever accept that they're meant for each other...or will they continue to deny the attraction that's existed since the first moment When Harry Met Sally? *1989

2 out of 5 stars Quantity VS Quality Action.......2003-06-05

Lots of fighting and explosions here but everything moves a little too fast (undercranking) and the story is nothing special. The DVD is also pretty weak. Donnie Yen fans will probably dig it.

3 out of 5 stars Donnie Yen makes this a watchable film.......2002-03-05

Crystal Hunt was a fairly poor film, perhaps due to lack of budget, but it was none the less an average film that you wouldn't mind renting, which is what I did.

Donnie Yen makes this film and his fights against regulars such as Micheal Woods( whom was the muscular fighter that fought against Donnie Yen on the top of the building at the end of 'In Line of Duty 4') makes this film fairly watchable and merely a collection filler rather than a centre piece of a film collection.

2 out of 5 stars not so good.......2000-07-22

I didn't like this movie much...it has a predictable story to it and bad portrayed fightscenes.....a shame the talented Donnie Yen is in this one......Because his talent is not being showed.....and this movie makes him look bad

2 out of 5 stars not so good.......2000-07-22

I didn't like this movie much...the story isn't very good and the fightscenes aren't portrayed very well....very dissapointing from an actor so talented as Donnie....

2 out of 5 stars 3 stars for action, 1 star for everything else........2000-01-30

3 stars for action, 1 star for everything else. I had a hard time getting into this movie at any point. From the start you can tell that it is a substandard prodution. From the poorest excuse for a plot to the bad voice overs the entire movie just has a very low budget air about it. Normaly I don't pay much attention to plot. I've enjoyed many martial arts movies with less plot, but there something about the way this one is delivered that makes it less forgiveble here. Maby its the bad background music. Now if you can get past all that(not to difficult for big martial arts fans) you can get the important part, the fighting. In this Crystal Hunt does alright. There are a lot of people fighting in this movie. This kinda' gives the fighing a bit of uneveness, ranging from WOW to Eh, depending on who is involved. Donnie Yen is realy an amazing talent and does get a couple of good fights, but is better seen in the "Iron Monkey". In the end my advice is ,unless you seen everything else out there or have some special interest in it, you can find something better.
