4 out of 5 stars Hwang Jang Lee and Kwan Young Moon round out an all star cast in this odd but good movie (good for the fights that is).......2007-07-17

Kwan Young Moon fittingly runs the High Kick School, and he wants to get rid of Chu Tiet Wo (from Jade Claw (Dub)) because he is jealous of his successful business. Yen Shi Kwan plays Chu Tiet Wo's nephew, and gets tricked into guaranting that his uncle's escort service will successfully deliver a money shipment. When Tiet Wo is killed and the money is robbed by Kwan Young Moon and his goons, Yen Shi Kwan is in a lot of trouble. He gets forced out of his house, and things are pretty much finished for him. Luckily, Hwang Jang Lee shows up to save one of Tiet Wo's guards (played by Yuen Mo) during the robbery and lets him know that he is after Kwan Young Moon and he will take revenge for Chu Tiet Wo and his family. Hwang Jang Lee is the greatest kicker in kung fu cinema history, and his character can rip down trees with his legs in this movie! There is also a subplot with Chu Tiet Wo's daughter being made into Kwang Young Moon's child bearing concubine, and this is where the movie becomes a bit odd.

The story is not bad, but kind of boring. Luckily the fights are good. Lau Hok Nin is one of my favorite actors, and his kung fu skills aren't too bad either. It is great to see him in a rare villain role as one of Moon's henchman. Yen Shi Kwan is unrivaled when it comes to working the fists, and this is the most I have ever seen him fight in any of his old school movies. Yen Shi Kwan plays Jet Li's main opponent in Once Upon a Time in China #1, so you can just imagine how good he looked 10 years prior to that. Chu Tiet Wo gets limited action, but he does a jumping splits kick that I had never seen from him before. The main attraction is super kicker Kwan Young Moon. The final fight is a death duel between Moon and Hwang Jang Lee, and it is a dream match-up. This fight could have been better, and it should have been a minute or two longer, but all of the fights are good, so I wasn't too disappointed. Kwan Young Moon has to be crazy to take these full contact kicks from Hwang, but the guy did used to have cars run over him to show off his strength. He may not have been affected by it, but a full contact kick to the neck from real life grandmaster Hwang Jang Lee would cause damage to most people.

I am dead stuck between giving this a 3 and a 4 star rating, but seeing so many of my favorite stars with great performances bumps this up to 4 stars. Just watch it for the fights, cause even though the story is kind of dark, it's nothing special. And I didn't know where to fit this in my review, but I have to give my favorite line of the movie- "Monster! How come the baby's a monster!"

Picture quality on the Videoasia DVD is watchable.

4 out of 5 stars Old "Skool" kung fu for real.......2006-06-05

The DVD transfer is really poor,,,however, the choreograpy certainly made up for it immensely,,which is why I gave this flick a 4 stars,,and not 5 stars. I really enjoyed this flick, absolutely amazing. Kwan Young Moon meets Hwang Jang Lee ( silver fox),,,AMAZING performance from both fighters. I do believe this is one of the few flick where the fox played a good guy, I could be wrong. However, it was an amazing performace from the fox!! Kwan Young Moon took this opportunity to really do his thing,,and he sure did. It would be a dis-service to say too much about this amazing flick,,,but I do reccommend you get it,,rest-assured you will not be dissapointed

5 out of 5 stars Sleeper of the century!!!.......2005-07-26

I watch alot of gong fu (kung fu) movies and this is up there with the greats!! The beginning is strange and this classic pulls no punches (metaphorically and literally). The villians are seriously demented and there are a few lines that I will probably repeat ad naseum - or at least until my wife kicks me out of the house. The abrupt ending is in the tradition of great gong fu movies and leaves you happily wanting more. I only wish I could find a Chinese language version (only drawback). - PS- some ultra-cool 70's cop show music mixed in for that oh so strange feeling!
